Next Nintendo Direct’s ‘Win Conditions’ Spark Heated Debate on 5ch: ‘Ocarina of Time Alone Already Wins It’

From our other sites

The story

Ahead of Nintendo’s next Nintendo Direct, a thread on 5ch’s hardware and industry (Gehan) board tried to pin down exactly what Nintendo would need to announce to “win.” Some posters felt the last Direct paled next to Sony’s recent State of Play, and many argued the “win line” should be the appearance of a major third-party title like GTA6, Genshin Impact, or a new Monster Hunter. Others countered that Nintendo had “already won” simply because the Ocarina of Time remake had been announced previously. The thread also veered into listing what would count as a “loss” instead.

Let's rule out stuff like GTA6 that's basically never gonna happen.
If it's not announced, that's a win for Sony's side.

Re: #1
Wouldn't it actually be better if it's 'a game nobody predicted'?
Threads go up to 1,000 replies, so the list of titles is basically going to grow without limit.

Re: #8
Even for an unpredictable title, you could just write something vague like 'a brand-new FromSoftware game.'
9AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:24
GTA showing up is basically a lock.
A buddy of mine from the hardware board said Rockstar got furious and pulled out over the disc format being dropped, so that's pretty credible.

Re: #9
Your 'buddy from the hardware board' lol

Right now it's a crushing loss compared to the last State of Play…
Could use some kind of surprise.

Re: #13
Your ID looked like it spelled 'SEX'” (5ch randomly assigns each poster an ID string per thread)
16AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:29
Isn't Ocarina of Time alone already enough to win?
19AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:30
Re: #16
This is about new content in the upcoming Direct —
Ocarina of Time was already announced as a title last time.
38AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:36
Re: #16
Exactly this
The outcome was already decided before it even started.
18AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:30
GTA6
Earth Defense Force
Astro Bot
Concord
Saros
Genshin Impact
Wuthering Waves

Re: #1
ANANTA ('Infinite')

Re: #18
(lol)
29AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:33
So what would even count as a loss then…

Re: #29
– A 21-minute segment about some old lady
– "It's just like a movie, right? Except it's not a game, and we didn't make a movie either."
– A talk show featuring some completely unknown newcomer voice actor
– Splitting a once-popular old title into four separate remakes

Re: #29
Hard to imagine, but if there wasn't a single world premiere, that really would be a loss.
35AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:35
If narrator Yuichi Nakamura gets an interview segment running over 10 minutes, I'll concede defeat.
41AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:37
Re: #35
Problem is, that'd probably be more entertaining than a chat between Kaji and Fairouz Ai lol
48AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:41
Re: #35
A talk with Sakurai, or watching Sugita play a game and react — I'd actually kind of want to see that.
160AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:15
Re: #35
I'd take the loss, just give us 30 minutes of that lol. Even a pre-show countdown chat would do.
42AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:37
Re: #1
GTA6, Genshin Impact, Spider-Man, Gran Turismo —

if even one of those gets announced, I think that's a Nintendo win.
43AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:38
ANANTA ('Infinite')

Re: #42
Oh damn lol
44AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:38
Re: #42
Putting Sony-first-party stuff on that list seems like a stretch
Maybe just Genshin Impact makes sense.
47AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:40
Instead of figuring out what counts as a win for the Direct,
it's faster to figure out what counts as a loss.
Like, if there's zero new info and it's all stuff we already knew, that's a loss for the Direct, right?
51AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:42
Re: #47
If there's no surprise big third-party title announcement, that's a loss —
like if it's all just indie games.
60AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:43
If the FF7 Remake Part 3 segment runs over 9 seconds, let's just call it a win for Sony.

Favorite: new 3D Mario
Dark horse: Genshin Impact
Long shot: new Smash Bros.
Wild card: GTA6

That about cover it?

Re: #115
Favorite: Mario
Dark horse: ANANTA ('Infinite')

I'd say.
128AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:01
What's with everyone spamming Chinese games as Nintendo's 'win condition' (??) lol
133AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:02
Re: #128
More like a list of stuff that would 'kill us' (the posters) if it actually showed up
136AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:03
Re: #133
Just name titles that will absolutely never appear — or aren't even worth airing in a Direct —
and you'll win every time lol
144AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:06
Re: #133
Well, I don't think it'll actually show up either, but if it did, it'd genuinely be an unwelcome surprise.
146AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:07
By the way, Genshin Impact showing up is basically guaranteed already
because they haven't announced it's been cancelled

157AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:12
GTA, Persona, Monster Hunter, Resident Evil —
if any one of these shows up, let's just call it a win.
159AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:14
Re: #157
Oh, if a new Monster Hunter comes as a console exclusive, that's a total victory.
162AnonymousSep 9, 2026 13:17
Re: #157
Resident Evil already has an RE Code: Veronica remake confirmed, and they've already said Monster Hunter Wilds is getting a port, so…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This kind of “Nintendo Direct vs. State of Play” rivalry framing is a recurring topic on the hardware and industry (Gehan) board, and it’s less about actual release schedules or official announcements than about which event “generated more hype.” The GTA6, new Monster Hunter, and Genshin Impact rumors raised in the thread are all unconfirmed speculation at best, and some posts cite unverifiable “a friend told me” sources, making them hard to substantiate. The Ocarina of Time remake, meanwhile, was announced on a separate prior occasion and should arguably be judged independently from this particular Direct — yet posters were quick to declare the outcome “already decided,” which shows how much these debates are shaped by pre-existing hype levels.
