The story

In the August 22 Giants-Carp game, the Giants cruised to a 5-0 win, extending their winning streak. Starting pitcher Yamato Daiki picked up his first professional win as a starter, backed by a two-run homer from Matsumoto Go and a timely hit from Nakayama. The thread lit up with a mix of questions about the manager’s lineup choices and praise for Daiki’s big day.

Giants win again today, and Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki sure tastes great (o^∀^o) (a cheeky dig — savoring the loser's local specialty)

Giants win again today, and ajari-mochi (a Kyoto rice cake, unrelated to Hiroshima — just riffing on the previous post) tastes great too (o^∀^o)

After Arai-san [the Carp manager],
who'd even want that job?
10AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:21
Does the Giants even have a real starting rotation?
Why bench Otsuka when he's red hot
and run out Sakamoto batting 5th with Kai catching?
They're overtinkering with everything.

Re: #10
They optioned Takemaru off the roster, so that's the replacement.

Re: #10
If they'd lost, sure, but they won comfortably without allowing a run — that complaint doesn't hold up.

Re: #10
Otsuka's been playing nonstop, so it's probably just a rest day. And they won anyway, so who cares.
Tomorrow's starter is Ogasawara, so Otsuka's back in.

Feels like pitcher Martinez picked up an easy save there.
12AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:22
Congrats to Daiki on his first career win in his first start!
13AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:22
Shut out two games in a row? That's just weak.
Fans should be furious.
41AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:42
Re: #13
There are bigger things to be angry about than that.
14AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:23
Martinez, picking up a save with a 5-run lead, is the real winner here.
15AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:24
SoftBank's cleanup hitters are on a whole different level, though.

Re: #15
It's silly to even compare the two.

Re: #1

Decision
Winning pitcher: Giants — Daiki (1-0, 0 SV)
Losing pitcher: Hiroshima — Tamamura (1-4, 0 SV)
Save: Giants — Martinez (3-3, 34 SV)

Someone said it earlier, but Daiki's got that classic Showa-era handsome-guy look (a retro, old-school leading-man vibe).

Yamato Daiki:
"Giants fans, please remember the name 'Yamato Daiki' before you head home."

Re: #17
Ah, that makes sense —
Takemaru had been off form, so that checks out.

Re: #1
Sounds like the Carp got chewed out by Fujikawa over a hit-by-pitch, so now they're showing their support by losing to the Giants every single time.
26AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:30
The Giants don't hit guys and put them on the injury list, though, right?
37AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:38
Re: #26
Abe properly respected his elder, Arai,
but Fujikawa didn't, and that's why he earned Arai's disapproval.
43AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:44
Re: #26
Actually, today Urata already took a pretty scary hit-by-pitch,
though he just barely avoided a serious injury.
28AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:33
Outside of Tigers games played in a dome, they can actually win properly, so they're still hanging in there.
31AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:35
Guess the announcement of the 4th one is getting close
they've sent him down and gotten him properly ready.
33AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:36
Didn't know the Zombies [a mocking nickname for the lifeless-looking team] were still playing baseball
nothing but half-hearted games from them.
34AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:37
Say what you want, but Kai's actually calling a good game behind the plate.
35AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:37
Daiki's surgery set him back time-wise, but he's the same age as a first-year college draftee, so he's still got plenty of runway ahead.
57AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:24
They're strong at Tokyo Dome, huh.
59AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:26
Re: #57
Actually it's the opposite —
this year they're weak at Tokyo Dome.
They win more at other parks.
The pitching staff is clearly getting hit hard there.
60AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:28
Guess they don't even do night games on summer-vacation weekends anymore.
87AnonymousAug 22, 2026 19:35
Re: #60
Outdoor day games in summer got scrapped starting this year —
reason being it's just too hot.
95AnonymousAug 22, 2026 19:53
Re: #60.
They stopped night games at outdoor stadiums in summer because of heatstroke risk. Day games now only happen at domed stadiums (except Seibu's).
Also, for Giants home games, Saturdays still occasionally get a night game, but Sundays are now almost always day games.

Good for Matsumoto Go — he's managed to succeed as a Giants player in a way even Matsuda couldn't.
69AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:51
Re: #66
Seriously, the guys who were against picking up Matsumoto owe him an apology.
74AnonymousAug 22, 2026 19:04
Re: #66
The only ones who've openly said they've been Giants fans since childhood are pretty much Matsu-Go, Nakayama, and Ishizuka.
Plenty of Tigers fans on this roster though lol
86AnonymousAug 22, 2026 19:35
Even after loading the bases, if it's still just a 1-run game, does that still count as a save?
88AnonymousAug 22, 2026 19:37
Re: #86
Used to be that 2-outs-bases-loaded counted as a 4-run save situation, but under the current rules it's 5 runs.

Background and Key Points

For readers unfamiliar with Japanese pro baseball: the Yomiuri Giants and Hiroshima Toyo Carp are two of the Central League’s most storied franchises, and this was a lopsided in-season match rather than a marquee rivalry night. Carp manager Ryoji Arai is a former Carp great now in a rebuilding job with a thin, inconsistent staff — hence one poster’s crack that nobody would want to inherit the position after him. Yamato Daiki is a young right-hander whose path to the rotation was delayed by surgery; because Japanese draft classes are tracked by age cohort rather than pro-service years, he’s still considered on the same developmental clock as a fresh college draftee despite the setback. Erasmo Martinez is the Giants’ closer, and NPB’s save rule (unlike MLB’s) can credit a “save situation” even with a big lead if the tying run is on base, which is why his outing drew mixed reactions rather than blanket praise.

Where the thread actually diverged was over manager Hara’s lineup choices — several posters called benching the hot-hitting Otsuka and batting Sakamoto fifth with Kai catching “overtinkering,” while others pointed out a comfortable shutout win makes second-guessing pointless and that Otsuka’s absence was simply a rest day before the next start.

One thing casual readers might miss: the throwaway note about NPB scrapping outdoor day games in summer isn’t stadium trivia, it’s a league-wide 2026 policy shift driven by heatstroke concerns for players — a genuinely unusual accommodation compared to MLB’s unchanged day-game scheduling.
