A thread looking back on the atmosphere in Morning Musume during Uemura Aarie’s time as leader has appeared on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Some say it was a much-needed period of recovery from the tense mood of the original-member era, while others argue she wasn’t really suited to being leader — opinions are split on what the group’s vibe was really like back then.
Eba (nickname for a member) got treated pretty carelessly at times
It was exactly the breathing room the group needed to get away from all that tension.
I guess Tomoko really was scary after all, huh?

Not really — it's just that the group barely had any activities because it overlapped with the COVID pandemic.

A lot of credit for creating that good atmosphere goes to Aarie's efforts.
The vibe was great — but there wasn't really a mindset of trying to improve their skills.

That's not true. Back then they were given tons of freedom to improvise, and sure, some of it fell flat, but that experience is exactly what led to where they are now. Has Hello! Project ever let members run that free before?

I get they want people to buy her photobook, but lately Uemura and her fans seem way too eager to cozy up to Juice=Juice, and it's kind of off-putting.

Uemura fans are always in 'Ookami' (the Morning Musume fan board on 5ch), no matter what.

I never disliked Aarie, but I don't think she was cut out to be leader. Credit to her for trying hard, though.

Can't really blame her — she didn't even want to be leader in the first place.

I remember Tako being super attached to her.

Every current member is basically a 'Uemura child,' devout followers of the Church of Uemura — though she never actually tries to recruit anyone, lol.

By 'recruit,' you mean she chimes in on other groups like 'well, Uemura would've done it this way'?

Apparently Aarie had already decided to graduate by the time she became leader, and she'd told everyone, including the OGs, from the start.

Makes you wonder if she wanted to quit even sooner if it weren't for the Takagi thing. Still, props to her for seeing it through as leader even though she hated every second of it.

Karin: 'Aarie's a gal who's kind even to introverts'

Coming from an introvert herself, that carries some weight.

Kanazawa never blames people for messing up, and Uemura's carried that on. There's zero of that 'pile-on' culture you saw in Morning Musume or Berryz Koubou during the original-member era.

Though on the flip side, nobody calls out Manakan even when she keeps blanking on the unison lyrics.

Antis just can't help running their mouths even when they don't know a thing, lol.
