The ¥1,000 Whisky Everyone Called a Steal — 5ch: ‘Wait, Were You Drinking the Hype, Not the Whisky?’

Written by

A thread popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (general live-discussion) board where whisky lovers gathered to swap recommendations. As names ranged from beginner-friendly blends to pricey single malts, one comment stood out: a great-value whisky in the ¥1,000 range had suddenly stopped getting mentioned right after its ingredient label changed — a jab that got a big laugh out of the thread.

Anyone here actually drinking whisky?
2Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:20:31.94ID:ZRP69c1v0
Drinking Chivas Regal Mizunara 12 Year today.

🥸 Highballs are great with this one.

I can't really pick up the mizunara (Japanese oak) character… what am I doing wrong?

Tell me the best value-for-money pick…

Blended's fine, right?
For smoky, go with Teacher's.
For fruity, grab a Chivas 12 at Don Quijote.

Glen Grant Arboralis.

I'm a beginner —
Cutty Sark, Jameson, The Busker, and Chivas Regal —
which one's best?
9Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:22:08.82ID:ZRP69c1v0

Drink them all and find your own preference.
Your tastebuds aren't anyone else's, so don't just take their word for it.
10Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:22:22.46ID:/UCPVKNb0

🥸 My pick is Chivas 12.
61Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:40:16.50ID:FfrAPD380
>>4
Cutty Sark's easy to drink, I like it.
For this price range, that's probably the one.
13Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:24:30.70ID:axEz1dBp0
Lately I've just been drinking canned Kavalan highballs.
When I make my own highball at home, I hate wasting what's left in the 500ml soda bottle, so I end up overdoing it.
15Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:24:56.65ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>13
The yellow can's a better deal than buying the bottle.
26Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:28:36.07ID:ZRP69c1v0
>>13
I feel that.
One bottle of soda gets you about 4 glasses,
so I only crack it open when I'm really in the mood to drink.
17Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:26:03.57ID:N07l1jcld
I don't know much about whisky, but I splurged on an Oban 14 to look cool.
Apparently it's great, but honestly I couldn't tell the difference from any other scotch.
18Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:26:42.50ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>17
🥸 Oban 14 is fruity and delicious.
20Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:27:36.83ID:axEz1dBp0
>>15
The red-label one's pricey too, but it's good.
22Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:28:02.71ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>20
The sherry one just didn't work for me.
38Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:32:52.65ID:axEz1dBp0
>>22
What about the purple one?
The dry one.
I actually like that better than the yellow.
24Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:28:20.20ID:Y3BWXwvn0
At the end of the day, I'm a Glenfarclas 105 guy.
31Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:29:41.44ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>24
🥸 The price went up, but it's still good value.
Insanely heavy sherry-cask character.
28Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:29:06.35ID:0ZuHuR0Yd
>>18
I don't really get what 'fruity' is even supposed to mean here.
33Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:30:05.42ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>28
🥸 Kind of like green apple, I guess.
29Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:29:06.44ID:fpnd4ZMb0
I love Teacher's.
Torys (Suntory's budget blend) is good too.
34Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:30:38.19ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>29
🥸 If I'm buying Torys, I'd rather just spend a few hundred yen more and get a scotch.
51Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:37:43.46ID:vw3zY6cc0
The expensive stuff gets absurdly expensive, but you're all basically drinking ¥2,000-3,000 bottles most of the time, right?
53Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:38:09.96ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>51
🥸 I do own pricier bottles, but I only crack them open now and then.
55Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:38:55.27ID:axEz1dBp0
>>51
Start the night with the expensive one, then switch to something affordable.
73Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:46:04.47ID:efztCb+90
I also grabbed Nikka Frontier — cheap and pretty tasty. Is there anything similar but a step up?
74Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:46:32.63ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>73
🥸 Get From the Barrel.
78Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:47:56.24ID:ZRP69c1v0
>>73
Nikka Coffey Malt.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DmyqiTnVAAEU7rY.jpg
If you're in the ¥1,000 range, this is the one.
90Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:56:27.32ID:ZRP69c1v0
>>86
This one's genuinely good.
It used to get recommended everywhere, but the second the ingredient label changed, everyone who'd been pushing it just went totally silent — I had to laugh.
Makes you wonder if you guys were actually drinking the whisky, or just drinking the hype.
93Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:59:55.13ID:FfrAPD380
>>86
As long as it's not cut with added spirits, it's worth it.
99Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 22:05:14.05ID:ZRP69c1v0
>>95
A bluish label in the ¥1,000 range — I can't think of anything except >>86.
88Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:55:37.32ID:efztCb+90
I'm curious about Kavalan too, but I'm hesitant in case the sweetness turns out to be the artificial-sweetener kind.
91Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 21:56:43.84ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>88
🥸 For Kavalan, the yellow canned highball is great value — that's my recommendation.
110Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 22:32:29.46ID:XqdbBrlq0
>>88
I keep a bottle of Kavalan around — it's got a refined sweetness, kind of like Macallan.
It's not an artificial-sweetener kind of sweet.
Mix it 1:1 with water over ice (a 'half rock') and it's seriously good.
95Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 22:01:14.14ID:zj3XS/4a0
I bought a whisky for about ¥1,000 at Yamaya or Big (Japanese liquor store chains) and it was amazing, but I can't remember the name. Anyone know? I think the label was kind of blue.
97Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 22:02:53.60ID:/UCPVKNb0
>>95
🥸 That's way too little info to work with.
98Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 22:03:01.16ID:YEiiVeLo0
I post this in whisky threads every so often — anyone want to buy it off me for like ¥100,000?
(Not actually selling, though.)
107Anonymous2026/08/20(木) 22:29:43.41ID:zj3XS/4a0

That was it.
