The story

A notice that the anonymous message board “Edge” will shut down in 10 hours has been circulating, sparking discussion on 5ch’s NanG board (“Nanidemo Jikkyō G,” a sports/live-discussion board). Reactions ranged from jabs at users who defected to Edge during a past board-split controversy, to questions about the board’s management and its ID-display system.

Ohh man…
Edge helped me out with a lot of stuff, gonna miss it.
11AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:29
Thanks for everything, admin 😢
12AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:29
It was a good containment board (a place to dump the problem posters) — feels like NanG's about to get messy again.
15AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:29
Thought it was a troll post, but it's real.
Startled me for a second, but well, can't be helped.
17AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:29
Kenmo (another 5ch board) works fine for me
never went to Edge once the whole time.
21AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:30
Wonder what face those guys are gonna make crawling back to NanG.
23AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:30
They kept posting those shady stealth-marketing replies steering people over there, the whole time.
25AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:30
Shutting down right as China cracks down harder on VPNs for overseas access and Edge becomes totally unreachable from the mainland…? Suspicious timing.
30AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:31
They'd occasionally come shill it over here — guess they were desperate.
35AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:32
Isn't this thread just some guy who got banned on Edge starting it out of spite?
39AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:32
Edge people, get out of NanG.
41AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:32
Please don't come crawling back.
Go to Open2ch instead, pretty please.
42AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:33
Hang in there a little longer
please don't unleash the baseball-thread "named" regulars and the affiliate-blog scum
back onto the world.
44AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:33
Can't we divert the refugees somewhere else so they don't end up here?
46AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:33
They're not really coming back here anyway.
It's fine, it's fine.
47AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:33
I'm stuck — can't get verified on Edge over a mobile connection.
51AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:34
Re: #1
Isn't this just a troll post…?
I'm holding my head in my hands.
52AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:34
What face are the ones who fled gonna make when they come crawling back? 🤪
55AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:35
To begin with, Edge's thread-creation ID feature didn't change for an entire week — which basically meant everyone's Wachoi (partial-IP ID tag) was exposed the whole time.
That's not an anonymous board.
Of course a place like that was bound to collapse.
56AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:35
They were acting so full of themselves just a little while ago, why did it come to this 😢
58AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:35
What even are Edge and Talk in the first place?
I heard bits about someone called Tarako getting pushed out or something.
59AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:35
If it means NanG gets livelier, that's fine by me.
We're generous, so we welcome them.
60AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:35
It was creepy how the Edge admin just quietly let stuff get reposted to Kinisoku and other affiliate-aggregator blogs.
Wonder how much they were getting paid.
61AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:36
Why don't they just go to whichever NanJ board isn't being used these days.
64AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:36
LMAOOOO wwwwwwwwwwww
66AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:37
When did the split even happen? Can't remember.
67AnonymousAug 21, 2026 19:37
Edge people should just go recycle NanJ instead.

Background and Key Points

5ch is the successor to the pioneering forum 2channel and remains Japan’s largest anonymous message-board network, organized into hundreds of topic boards. NanG (“Nanidemo Jikkyō G,” roughly “Anything Live-Discussion G”) is one of its most active and culturally distinctive boards, built around sports commentary but functioning as a general hangout with its own slang and humor. Like many long-running 5ch communities, NanG has periodically split when disputes among regulars or moderators pushed a faction to found a splinter board elsewhere — Edge appears to be one such offshoot, alongside another called Talk. This pattern of schism, exile, and eventual limping return is common in 5ch culture, distinct from anything like a corporate platform shutdown; boards are informally run and can appear or disappear with little institutional weight behind them.

The thread doesn’t split over whether Edge’s closure is good or bad — nearly everyone treats it as deserved. The actual disagreement is over what happens next: whether returning Edge users should be welcomed back into NanG to reinvigorate it, or should be turned away and redirected to Open2ch (a separate free alternative board community) or an idle NanJ offshoot instead.

What outside readers are likely to miss is that this “shutdown” is unverified even within the thread — several posters explicitly wonder if the whole notice is a troll post or a grudge post from a banned user, and the article never confirms otherwise. Readers may also assume Edge was a major platform; in context it reads as a small, contested splinter community whose founding grievance (something involving a user called Tarako) is never actually explained by anyone in the thread.
