  • 3 Months at the Gym, Bench Maxed at 25kg — 5ch: ‘Even a Grade-Schooler Could Lift That’

When the thread starter posted that after three months at the gym, their bench press limit was still just 25kg, 5ch users reacted with a flood of astonished comments like “that’s a weight even a grade-schooler could lift” and “there must be some kind of medical issue.” The poster, who is 171cm and 65kg, said they go to the gym three times a week and also walk four times a week, but other participants pointed out that beginners typically see much bigger gains in three months, and some questioned the efficiency of the 10-reps-times-3-sets approach itself. Meanwhile, longtime lifters offered concrete advice, noting that sticking with the same load lets the body adapt and progress stall — turning the thread into more than just mockery.

    Re: #162
Once your muscles adapt to the stimulus you'll plateau fast
Better to vary the load instead of sticking with the same weight

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In bench press terminology, the weight usually refers to the max you can barely lift for a single rep — which is different from a weight you can handle for multiple reps, like 10 reps x 3 sets (this distinction underlies the calculation in comment #59). It’s said that even beginners commonly reach around 1 to 1.5 times their bodyweight within a few months, which is the benchmark behind why commenters saw 25kg as low. Also, as touched on in comments #166 and #168, “plateauing” — where muscles adapt to the same weight and routine, causing progress to stall — is a common phenomenon in strength training, and is said to require changing up form or programming. The comments about “illness” or “being sick” in the thread are less factual claims and more part of the exaggeration-heavy teasing culture of the board; it’s worth noting no actual medical diagnosis was involved.

  • Manga Artist Says ‘Side-Quests Just to Avoid Being Called Linear Are Annoying’ — Sparks Debate; 5ch: ‘They’re Not Mutually Exclusive’

A manga artist’s remarks along the lines of “Games that pile on side-quests just so they won’t be called ‘linear’ are annoying — please stop” were picked up on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board. The artist reportedly caused a stir once before by calling a Nintendo game’s gimmick “not fun,” and on this thread too, rebuttals piled up: “Being linear and having side-quests are two separate issues” and “You’re confusing this with post-clear completion content.” On the other hand, some defended the artist, saying “These days people care about time efficiency (‘tai-pa’), so linear games are easier to enjoy” and “If side-quests add depth to the story, please keep them.” Opinion split along the lines of game-design philosophy.

You fundamentally don't get what 'linear' means — whether a game is linear and whether it has side-quests are not the same thing.

    22AnonymousAug 31, 2026 00:14
    That's not it though
We're in the era of time-efficiency ('tai-pa') now, so if you just want to clear the game, you don't have to spend much time on it
But side-quests flesh out the story, so it's more like 'do them if you've got the time'
If anything, more users these days find linear games easier to enjoy precisely because they're linear.
    23AnonymousAug 31, 2026 00:18
No way devs are adding side-quests JUST so they don't get called linear…

There are different degrees of 'linear,' but is this guy basically saying only the main story should exist?
At that point don't you have to go all the way back to Famicom-era games, where there wasn't even enough capacity for extra events?
    30AnonymousAug 31, 2026 00:32
Speaking of linear games, FF10 really moved me

I don't think any developer's gonna be happy seeing a manga that's just indirect griping
If it's such a hassle, I think he should just quit playing the game — and quit drawing negative manga about it too.

It's optional content → 'I don't want to do it, but skipping it makes me feel like I'm missing out, so stop it!' That's just…
    35AnonymousAug 31, 2026 00:43

Honestly I think FF13's real problem wasn't being linear, it was the shallow ensemble storytelling
FF10 was just as linear, after all
This whole 'linear, linear' thing was just idiots on Geha and news-aggregator sites making noise.

Props for actually reading post #1.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“Linear” (ippon-michi, literally “single road”) was a term frequently used in 2000s RPG criticism of titles like FF10 and FF13, originally referring to a progression structure with little branching or open-field exploration freedom. The presence or absence of side-quests and detour content, however, is a separate design choice from that kind of progression freedom, and the thread saw repeated pushback along the lines of “these are fundamentally two different issues.” FF13 in particular is known as a game where debate centered less on its linearity and more on its ensemble storytelling. The view that frames this post as claiming developers “pad games with side-quests just to avoid being called linear” is a subjective interpretation that speculates about developers’ intentions — no material has actually been presented showing this reflects real development circumstances. It’s also worth noting as background that this manga artist has previously sparked reactions with posts criticizing gimmicks in Nintendo games, and that their remarks as game commentary have repeatedly become a topic of discussion.

  • Government to Buy Back 210,000 Tons of Reserve Rice — 5ch: ‘They’re Just Repurchasing It With the Money From Selling It’

It emerged on the 31st that Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has decided to buy back 210,000 tons of the government rice reserves it released in 2025. The ministry had initially set aside funds in the FY2026 budget to repurchase 150,000 tons, but expanded the amount in light of private-sector rice stockpiles hitting a record high; a negotiated (non-competitive) contract is expected to be finalized on September 18. On 5ch’s news board, users debated the sequence of events involving Agriculture Ministers Eto, Koizumi, and Suzuki in handling prices at the time of the release, as well as where responsibility for the price surge really lies.

    Kyodo News

A policy proposal from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries concerning the government’s rice reserves came to light on the 31st. Its centerpiece is buying back 210,000 tons of the reserve rice released in 2025 to restore stockpile levels, with a negotiated contract to be carried out on September 18. The FY2026 budget had set aside funds to repurchase 150,000 tons, but that has been expanded to 210,000 tons in light of private-sector rice inventories reaching a record high. A final decision will be made based on the nationwide harvest outlook due to be released on the evening of the 31st, with an official announcement expected soon.

That actually helped a lot. Average rice prices dropped too once the reserve rice went out. And yet Suzuki claimed rice vouchers would be faster than reserve releases, halted the releases, promised to hand out vouchers to the public — and then never actually did. That's what triggered the price spike and people giving up on rice.

It's just that the plan to buy back the 800,000 tons released, spread over five years, got bumped up a bit. Also, sure, raising the price at release time would've shrunk the buyback gap — but selling it high back then would've defeated the whole purpose, so this outcome was baked in from the start.

Masuo Fujio, president of major rice wholesaler Shinmei Holdings

Caught flashing a glimpse of his luxury watch

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The government released reserve rice in 2025 in response to soaring prices. It was initially distributed through wholesalers under then-Agriculture Minister Eto but failed to reach the market in sufficient volume; prices only came down after his successor, Minister Koizumi, switched to selling directly to retailers. This buyback is part of an already-planned process to gradually restore that released stock, and the funding comes from the proceeds of the original sale rather than new tax spending — a point that’s easily misread. Thread participants were split over who bears responsibility for the price surge — farmers, JA, wholesalers, or the Ministry of Agriculture — and over whether public spending on agriculture is justified on food-security grounds. Notably, the debate centered less on whether reserves themselves are worthwhile and more on who should bear the resulting gains and losses.

  • Some Japanese Want to Be Buried, Not Cremated: Rethinking Burial Options in a Country Where 99% Choose Cremation

A Yahoo! News article about Japanese people who, despite cremation rates topping 99%, wish to be buried in the ground when they die sparked discussion on 5channel’s News Speed+ board. Thread participants shared firsthand accounts from regions that still practiced burial as late as the Showa era, traced the historical shift from “one grave per person” to family graves during the Meiji era, and traded interpretations of the actual wording of the Grave and Burial Law. The conversation also turned to the thorny issue of accommodating foreign residents in Japan who want burial plots, a topic that split opinion.

    Groundwater soil contamination

As a body decomposes, bodily fluids, nitrogen compounds (nitrate and nitrite nitrogen), and pathogens can seep into the soil and contaminate groundwater. The risk is especially high in places like Japan, with its humid climate and high water table.
    14AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:55
Wait, doesn't burial these days leave the body intact?
    43AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:59
    Re: #14
Not in Japan's acidic soil — the body doesn't survive. It decomposes, contaminates the surrounding soil, and eventually even the bones dissolve away. That's exactly why ancient regional lords were buried in stone coffins or coated in resin.

    Re: #38
Originally, up until the Meiji era, every person had their own individual grave. Then the Meiji government said there wasn't enough land, so families should share one grave each — and even that wasn't enough space, so it became one shared ancestral family grave. Honestly though, given today's land prices, one grave per person would be an insane luxury, so it was probably the right call…

Burial did happen in the past. But the population back then was completely different. The Edo period had about 26 million people. The Meiji era had 34 million. Now it's 122 million. There's no land for burial plots, and there are sanitation and cost risks too.
    64AnonymousAug 31, 2026 18:04
If you want to return to nature, just get cremated and have your ashes scattered outdoors. Japan switched from burial to cremation because there's so little land — try to understand that much.

    Re: #193
We did it as a matter of course right up until the year of the Great Hanshin earthquake (1995). We stopped since then because the foundation stones got in the way during burials. So now you see a lot of graves where the headstone is old but the base stone is new.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan’s cremation rate exceeds 99%, one of the highest in the world, yet the Act on Cemeteries, Burial, etc. (1948) itself does not explicitly ban burial. In practice, however, local governments designate almost no cemeteries for burial and rarely grant permits, leaving burial in a commonly misunderstood state of being “not illegal on paper, but practically impossible.” The shift from burial to cremation was driven mainly by the Meiji government’s move toward family graves, the surge in population from roughly 26 million in the Edo period to over 122 million today (which strained available burial land), and hygiene concerns — not by any uniform religious policy shift. The thread also turned into a debate over accommodating Muslim foreign residents in Japan who want burial, a real and practical issue given how few dedicated burial cemeteries exist domestically, rather than a purely emotional argument.

  • 35% of Unmarried Japanese Say ‘I Have No Intention of Marrying,’ Children and Families Agency Survey Finds

In a survey on marriage attitudes conducted by Japan’s Children and Families Agency among roughly 44,000 unmarried people aged 15 to 39, 35.1% said they “have no intention of marrying” — closing in on the 37.5% who said they “want to marry eventually.” The figures, released as interim results from a nationwide web survey of 100,000 people, were picked up on 5ch’s Nanchara Jikkyou G (Live News) board, sparking a wide-ranging debate over the agency’s reason for existing, how its budget is spent, and the root causes of Japan’s declining birthrate. Posters offered a string of theories — the pension system, changing family structures, women entering the workforce — while opinions split sharply between criticism of the agency and its defense.

35% of Unmarried Young People Say They “Have No Intention of Marrying” — Children and Families Agency’s Large-Scale Youth Survey

The Children and Families Agency conducted a web survey of 100,000 people nationwide aged 15 to 39 and has released interim tabulation results.

There were roughly 68,000 valid responses. Among the roughly 44,000 unmarried respondents who were asked about their attitude toward marriage, 37.5% said they “want to marry eventually,” followed by 35.1% who said they “have no intention of marrying.”

Right now, young people's pension taxes and social insurance premiums get spread out evenly and go toward the elderly's pensions and medical costs.

Instead, why not cut the basic pension and medical subsidies, and have part of a person's actual children's pension taxes and insurance premiums go directly to their own parents?

    Re: #34
That's not it. The root cause of the declining birthrate is the pension system itself.
This system is the root of the problem.
Once you know you'll get a pension and won't struggle in old age, you can pursue your own life without worry.
That's why marriage gets delayed, and why people pile on more and more conditions when choosing a partner.
That's why, throughout history, regardless of race, civilization, religion, or marriage customs, birthrates decline everywhere in the world once economic growth kicks in.

This marks the 10th straight year the number has hit a new record low since record-keeping began in 1899. The total fertility rate (the average number of children a woman has in her lifetime) fell 0.01 points from the previous year to 1.14, also a record low.
From here on, the men and women born in the 1990s — back when the birthrate was still stable — are going to age out of their childbearing years, so what exactly is there to be hopeful about?

I agree that the collapse of the extended-family system and the shift to nuclear families raised child-rearing costs and led to the falling birthrate.
But it's a stretch to blame the shift to nuclear families entirely on real estate agents.
Corporate relocation systems that suit big companies, and mother-in-law/daughter-in-law conflicts, deserve plenty of the blame too.

Kids stopped being labor a generation ago already — it's just that most people didn't think of themselves as being at the bottom.
Now social media and everything else has made that visible, and in a Japan with no bright future in sight, you've got people who can't bear to saddle a kid with a life as bleak as their own or worse, plus people who can't even reach the starting line of marriage — that one-two punch is just brutal.

    Re: #131
The problem is that nobody anticipated what was bound to happen once women entered the workforce, and no countermeasures were ever put in place.
Honestly, I keep thinking, what do these people even do all day at work?

Background and Key Points of Debate

What the Children and Families Agency released was an interim tabulation from a 100,000-person web survey, with about 68,000 valid responses; the pool asked about marriage intentions was limited to roughly 44,000 unmarried respondents. The agency was established in 2023 to consolidate child-related policy, and most of its budget is not newly created spending but a reallocation of social security spending — things like child allowances and childcare — that used to be split across different ministries. In the thread, criticism that “the budget is wasted” clashed with rebuttals that it “merely consolidated social security spending,” and this difference in starting assumptions is what’s driving posters to talk past each other. As for the causes of the declining birthrate, posters pointed to the pension system, changing family structures, and women’s employment status, among others — but none of these is an academically established single cause, and it’s worth noting they remain speculation confined to 5ch rather than settled fact.

Last time this ran, the Jump-board regulars' wall-of-text parodies had me dying laughing

    Background and Discussion Points

Hunter x Hunter is well known for its irregular publication schedule, largely due to author Yoshihiro Togashi’s health issues, and this thread’s interest in “how many chapters until it wraps up” and “how much manuscript is stockpiled” reflects that background. The story is currently mid-way through the Dark Continent arc and the Kakin succession arc running in parallel, with the princes’ Nen abilities and the Phantom Troupe’s movements depicted simultaneously — which regularly draws comments that the large cast makes the plot hard to follow. Opinions in the thread split over how Tserriednich, who has become something like the lead character of the succession struggle, is being handled: some said the story “was good until he started moving, then got lame,” while others voiced support for the banter between Prince Benjamin and the Phantom Troupe. The text-heavy page that became a talking point is also worth a note — it’s a form of the dense, monologue-style prose Togashi often uses, and the claim that it was AI-generated isn’t factual, just a reader’s joke.

  • Still Don’t Understand Why Sayashi Riho Rushed Her Graduation

A thread popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board looking back at why Sayashi Riho, who served as the ace of Morning Musume。’14, abruptly rushed her graduation. Many posters speculated that being treated as “a cut above the rest” created distance between her and her peers and fellow members, and that being pushed to constantly perfect her singing and dancing with no one to confide in took a heavy mental toll. Others were harsher, questioning whether she truly had the skill to back up the ace role, while some pointed out that other past aces had also suffered health problems in the position — expanding the discussion into whether Hello! Project’s whole “ace” system is even a good idea.

    1AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:05
I wish she'd stuck around longer
    23AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:35
The kind of "poor lonely her" teasing they did back then would absolutely spark a firestorm if it happened today
    31AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:41
    Re: #23
Back then, even Oda got teased by her manager during a Morning Musume broadcast, and it stirred up a bit of controversy on Ookami (the Hello! Project fan board) the next day.
That kind of thing would never fly now.
    25AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:37
Well, if you single out just one person for special treatment from the start, of course her peers and other members won't be thrilled about it.
While Chayu was around it was somehow kept in check, but the adults in charge should've supported her better.
    34AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:43
    Re: #25
That level of special treatment really was something else.
There are members in other idol groups who get pushed hard as the sole center and just take it in stride,
    but Sayashi wasn't that type.
    37AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:46
    Re: #34
If you're the ace, you have to be able to endure standing alone at the top.
    38AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:46
People say she was crushed by the pressure, but before that she was totally into the special treatment and riding high, so that's not quite the full story.
Her skills stopped improving, she couldn't keep up with her own ideal, mistakes piled up, her voice stopped coming out the way she wanted, she gained weight, and in the end she broke down.
    44AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:49
    Re: #38
I think that was a big part of it too.
"I should be able to do this but I can't" → overthinking leads to more mistakes → breaking down → "I need to try even harder" — a vicious spiral.
    50AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:53
But then again, if you lighten her load by giving lines to someone else, she'd spiral thinking she'd been demoted, so that's no better either.

Why though? Does it really put that much pressure on you?
    63AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:36
A single lone ace is just too much to ask of a teenage girl.
Look at John and Paul, or Kato-chan and Ken-chan (a famous Japanese comedy duo) —
legendary groups need two people at the top.
    They should've made it a two-top with Chan-san instead.
    71AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:42
    Re: #63
Even as a teenager, if she'd had a personality suited to opening up easily, she could've shared her worries with the other members.
But Sayashi was clearly being pushed alone with special treatment,
and I think that position made it hard to share worries with people around her.
    68AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:39
It couldn't be helped, but it's a shame the 9th generation ended up at the very top so quickly.

    73AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:42
The opposite, actually — a single top suited her better.
Once it became like a two-top with Oda and their singing got compared, that's what broke her.

Oda had her own worries in her own way, but Sayashi couldn't know that, so she'd end up comparing herself —

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sayashi Riho was picked as the ace of Morning Musume。’14 in 2014, but abruptly announced her graduation in 2015, and the official reasons were never explained in detail. The “Saya System” mentioned in the thread was a nickname fans at the time used critically for choreography and song arrangements built entirely around her, which shows just how unusual her promotion was. After graduating she relocated her base of activities and later resumed entertainment work under a different agency, but the finer details of that process are only discussed in fragments even within the thread, with plenty of posts that don’t go beyond speculation. The thread was split between the view that isolation caused by special treatment was to blame and the view that she genuinely struggled on the skill side, such as singing ability, with some pointing out that other past “aces” also suffered health problems — making it a notable thread in that the discussion expanded all the way to questioning whether Hello! Project’s single-ace system is even a good idea.

  • Tokyo: “The food’s bad, there are too many foreigners, traffic’s awful, and rent’s too high”

A post claiming “Tokyo’s food is bad, there are too many foreigners, the traffic is terrible, and rent is too high” set off a thread comparing quality of life in Tokyo versus the rest of Japan. On the food question, critics fired back that the original poster was “only going to chain restaurants” and “just eating thawed frozen food,” while defenders shot back with “have you never heard of the Michelin Guide?” The discussion gradually widened into a broader comparison of rent, salaries, public safety, staff attitudes, and the lack of jobs outside the big cities — with Osaka repeatedly singled out for praise as a place with “great food and cheap rent.”

What about the countless "pigs" hanging around Ramen Jiro? (Ramen Jiro: a Tokyo chain famous for its massive, calorie-bomb portions)

Background and key points of this discussion

The “Tokyo’s food is bad” argument is a recurring topic on 5ch, and the evidence usually cited is a reliance on chain restaurants and pre-frozen, reheated dishes. On the other hand, the Tokyo edition of the Michelin Guide has held one of the highest star counts in the world for years, and that became the main evidence for the “Tokyo has the best food” camp in the thread. The two sides largely talked past each other because they were comparing different things — one side was talking about cheap eateries, the other about starred restaurants — and the discussion broadened into a wider comparison of living costs, including jobs, public safety, and the closeness of community ties outside the big cities. Several posters singled out Osaka favorably, saying its food is great and its rent is cheap, which seemed to serve as an outlet for frustration with Tokyo’s overwhelming concentration of everything. It’s worth keeping in mind that none of this is backed by hard data or statistics — it’s purely a comparison of residents’ personal impressions.

  • Kohara Bras Calls Out the Anti-Media Crowd — 5ch Fires Back: ‘Isn’t the Source Itself Biased?’

Russian-born TV personality Kohara Bras sparked discussion by pointing out on Threads that many internet users who rage against the “trash media” are, in fact, citing Yahoo News articles that were originally produced by that very same “trash media.” In a 5ch thread, some users agreed with the point, while others pushed back, arguing that “information TV won’t report is circulating on social media.” Opinions split over where distrust in the media really comes from and how people should be consuming information.

    8/31 (Mon) 12:15

Kohara Bras (34), a Russian-born columnist and TV personality who grew up in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, updated Threads by the 31st with his take on internet users who accuse the media of biased reporting.

Kohara began, “When you check out the accounts of the guys on X screaming stuff like ‘The media sucks! Biased reporting! They should go under!’ — they’re usually posting about current events by quoting Yahoo News.” He then jabbed, “And I always think, are you sure that’s okay? Because the outlet behind that Yahoo News article is the very media you claim to hate.” He added sarcastically, “In the end, when something’s reported in a way that matches their own beliefs, they happily swallow it without question — but when it doesn’t match, they start yelling about ‘biased reporting.’ Maybe we should coin a term for these people, like ‘information-illiterate,’ for this age of information overload.”

    That's some serious blame-shifting.

    >When you're watching the news and you think,
"Why is this getting such huge coverage?"
or, conversely, "Why is everyone so quiet about this?" —
that gut feeling is usually right.
The answer is rarely found in the "facts" themselves — it's in the "structure."

    More than "what's being said,"
what matters is "what's NOT being said."

    The generational divide:
    TV generation:
"Whatever gets big coverage = important."

    Internet generation:
"The very act of staying quiet about something is suspicious."

This gap is exactly what surfaces as "distrust of the media."

"Mass media" 👈 mainstream media in general

Um, so are you saying the media had no idea about that dangerous "peace education" program in Okinawa, or that Fukuoka lawmaker's overseas trip, until this year?
It's normal to assume they had the information all along and just chose not to report it.
    109AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:11
I don't get the argument — it's simply "don't be biased," that's the whole point.
    158AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:25
    Re: #109
    That's impossible.
Likes, dislikes, whether something matches your beliefs or not — that always seeps through no matter what.
    133AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:17
New media is full of misinformation too.
    138AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:18
    Re: #133
Online media is even worse, an absolute dumpster fire on top of that — a situation so bad even the "lol"s wither away.
    142AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:20
Isn't that exactly the point — that the source itself is biased?
    151AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:23
    Re: #142
    Right?
    Makes no sense.
    176AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:32
    Re: #142
So when it matches your own beliefs, it's suddenly not biased?

That's the real problem here — do you genuinely believe your own worldview is simply correct?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

At the heart of Kohara’s point is the structural fact that major portals like Yahoo News mostly just redistribute articles originally produced by newspapers and TV stations. He was highlighting the irony that people who repeatedly bash the “trash media” on social media are, in fact, relying on that very media as their source. The thread split over where to place the blame for distrust in reporting. Some voiced frustration over the media failing to report things it should — essentially an accusation of negligence — while others pointed to the structural reality that no outlet can ever achieve total neutrality. The exchange also revealed that social media and online outlets have developed their own biases and misinformation problems in recent years, suggesting this issue can’t be reduced to a simple old-media-versus-new-media question of who’s more trustworthy.

  • Chunichi’s Nao Kō: Fans Worry About His Future as He Wraps Up Year 8

News that CBC Television is putting together a behind-the-scenes special on Chunichi Dragons player Kō Nao sparked a discussion on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board about what’s next for him. Drafted No. 1 in 2018 out of Osaka Toin High School, Nao has bounced between shortstop, pitcher, and outfield and is now entering his eighth season without ever locking down a position. The thread was full of anxious takes on how the team is using him, the front office’s attitude toward him, and what might happen to him going forward.

    1AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:03
Apparently CBC is doing some mystery behind-the-scenes special on him
    7AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:10
Are they planning to keep him stashed on the roster until he's too far gone for any other team to want him?
    12AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:13
    Re: #7
He's already so soaked in Chunichi-style baseball that no other team would touch him
    18AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:20
Well, even if he got put up in the active-player draft, you'd have to wonder if anyone would actually take him… no team wants to develop him just so Chunichi can gloat about it
    25AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:25
    Re: #18
Kind of depends who else from Chunichi ends up on that list. Every team has to have at least one guy taken in the active-player draft anyway
    104AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:22
    Re: #18
If it were AHRA he might've had a shot
    27AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:27
Isn't Chunichi basically banned from recruiting out of Osaka Toin at this point?
    100AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:20
    Re: #27
Dunno if it's a literal ban, but Chunichi hasn't drafted a single Osaka Toin player since Nao — probably not even the college guys from there. (Nakata Shō did sign with them, though.)
    29AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:28
Saw someone arguing that with all the injuries, now's the time to finally let Nao play shortstop. Made me realize Chunichi Dragons fans have genuinely lost it.
    38AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:35
    Re: #29
Couldn't he still handle late-inning substitute duty at this point? If he doubled up as mop-up reliever and backup outfielder, could they squeeze him onto the active roster?
    39AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:36
    Re: #29
They're in last place anyway, so who cares
    34AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:33
From the Chunichi Shimbun's side, they won market share in Gifu Prefecture off Nao — territory they'd been losing to the rival Gifu Shimbun. That's an achievement in itself.

His contribution is on a level where they could keep feeding him for life even without him ever breaking out, and it'd still be worth it
    40AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:36
    Re: #34
He's actually from the Hida region but went to high school in Osaka — did people over in Mino really think of him as "their guy from Gifu" too? (Hida and Mino are the two halves of Gifu Prefecture)
    36AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:35
Honestly outfield was probably his best fit all along — his bat just never came together
    42AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:38
    Re: #36
But there's Okabayashi, who's younger and beats him across the board in running, hitting, and fielding, so who knows
    44AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:39
    Re: #36
The outfield plan was dead the moment Okabayashi showed up. Shortstop was already dead once Tsuchida arrived too — he genuinely had nowhere left to play
    46AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:39
    Re: #36
He's got an arm, but he's not especially fast. If that's the profile, you'd rather draft an athletic college outfielder and bet on him breaking out instead
    43AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:38
His arm's decent but not strong enough to make it as a power pitcher. He'd like to put that arm to use on defense, but his defense is a disaster, so outfield's all that's left. And his bat is only marginally better than his pitching, so he can't even get into games as a position player. What do you even do with that guy
    45AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:39
    Re: #43
An occasional middle reliever might honestly be the right call…
    52AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:44
At the end of the day, you just shouldn't spend a first-round pick on a shaky 'raw talent' type. If he'd gone to college, he probably wouldn't even get drafted at this level
    55AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:46
    Re: #52
If anything he wasn't really the raw-talent type to begin with — he's not the kind of guy with dream-level power or speed
    59AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:49
    Re: #55
Yeah, true, he wasn't really a raw-talent case either. It is a mystery why four teams competed for him
    68AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:57
    Re: #59
The fact that he batted cleanup and played shortstop/pitcher for a Koshien championship team probably carried a lot of weight — that sense of "he'll turn into something somewhere"
    60AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:50
They should've developed him as a two-way player like Ohtani. Only difference from Ohtani being he'd pitch out of the bullpen instead.

    Pitching line:
    30 G, 3-3, 3.50 ERA

    Batting line:
    .240, 5 HR, 30 RBI, 5 SB

    Something like that
    93AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:16
    Re: #60
LMAO what a garbage two-way player
    70AnonymousAug 31, 2026 13:58
There were a lot of calculations behind Chunichi taking Nao No. 1. The team wanted to draft a hometown star because Chunichi Shimbun's circulation in Hida-Takayama, Nao's home region, was losing out to rival papers. Personally, I thought his defense would struggle at the pro level, and among high school shortstops that year I actually rated Kaito Kozono of Hotoku Gakuen (drafted No. 1 by Hiroshima) more highly.

    Re: #70
I get that this was part of Chunichi's motive for pushing the pick, but Nippon-Ham, Yomiuri, and Yakult also put in No. 1 bids on him, so there must've been reasoning behind theirs too. Though Nippon-Ham does love a flashy, bandwagon-y pick
    106AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:23
    Re: #70
It's actually wild that once Nao joined, Chunichi Shimbun's sales in the Hida region overtook the Gifu Shimbun
    72AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:01
Well, Ohtani made the two-way thing look so effortless that it kind of wrecked guys like this by comparison
    75AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:03
    Re: #72
Honestly I think most pro ballplayers these days are just watered-down Ohtanis
    76AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:03
Everyone keeps pinning this on Nao's talent, but Chunichi's development absolutely shares the blame. Don't look away from that
    77AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:04
    Re: #76
Takahashi Shūhei topping out at that level was on Chunichi's coaching too
    89AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:13
Koshien stars really don't pan out like they used to. Back in the day the precocious ones would go pro, click right away, and just keep rolling
    90AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:14
    Re: #89
Guess that just shows how much the gap between levels has widened
    99AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:20
Unless he causes some kind of scandal, a front-office job after retirement is basically locked in for him
    102AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:22
    Re: #99
Well, high draft picks do tend to get looked after generously even after retiring. The reason is that treating them shabbily would hurt the team's scouting relationships down the road
    129AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:48
Personally I think he could work as a mop-up pitcher who also comes in for late-inning outfield defense
    132AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:50
    Re: #129
Can a team that keeps a guy around with that little ambition even win, though?
    134AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:53
    Re: #132
Chunichi isn't trying to win anyway, so does it matter? If they were playing for real there's no way they'd be missing the Climax Series as often as they do
    135AnonymousAug 31, 2026 14:54
    Re: #132
I think a team that can't even properly write off a throwaway game is the bigger problem

    Background and key points

Kō Nao was Chunichi’s first-round pick in the 2018 draft out of Osaka Toin High School — that year Nippon-Ham, Yomiuri, and Yakult also placed first-round bids on him, and Chunichi won the negotiating rights in the lottery. In high school he played both shortstop and pitcher and batted cleanup for a Koshien-winning team, earning a reputation as an all-around talent. Since turning pro he’s been shuffled repeatedly between shortstop, pitcher, and outfield, entering his eighth season this year without ever settling into a fixed role. What split opinion in the thread wasn’t so much his usage as how to read the front office’s stance — why he’s been kept on this long without a set position — with some pointing to the team’s relationship with local media as a factor. That said, there’s been no official word yet on the CBC special or on what happens to him next, so it’s worth remembering everything here is speculation and commentary from 5ch, nothing more.
