  • Sociologist Chizuko Ueno’s Take on Discrimination Sparks Debate — 5ch: ‘It’s a Distinction When I Say It, Discrimination When You Do’

An interview article featuring sociologist Chizuko Ueno discussing lookism — being ranked by appearance — and ageism — being devalued because of old age — was picked up on 5ch’s News Express+ board. Her statement “There’s no need to just put up with discrimination” sparked debate over the wording itself, with posters saying the Japanese phrasing was ambiguous about whose “putting up with it” it referred to — the discriminator’s or the discriminated-against’s. Discussion also turned, as it often does in these threads, to the perennial question of where exactly the line between “discrimination” and “distinction” lies, without reaching any consensus.

Since the 2000s, the term “ikizurasa” (the sense of difficulty in simply living, of not fitting into society) has taken root in Japanese society. Some of this difficulty comes from internal factors like personal traits or upbringing, while other forms come from external factors — discrimination rooted in how society views a person. In the latter case, people are ranked by appearance from a young age, and in old age they’re marked down for losing physical ability and independence — so this difficulty just keeps changing shape and lasts a lifetime.

We put the question of the hardships caused by lookism (discrimination based on appearance) and ageism (discrimination based on age) — something many people experience — to sociologist Chizuko Ueno.

“You’re so cute!” “You don’t look your age at all.”

I think lookism is discrimination, plain and simple.
It should be banned outright, with real penalties for anyone caught doing it.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Lookism” and “ageism” are relatively new concepts that have taken root in Japanese since the 2000s, and this article stems from an interview with sociologist Chizuko Ueno conducted by a media outlet affiliated with Hakuhodo. Ueno is a professor emerita at the University of Tokyo and a leading figure in feminist studies, widely known for works such as Ohitorisama no Rougo (“The Old Age of Living Alone”), which explores how single elderly people live. The thread’s disagreement centered on two main points: first, the ambiguity of the phrase “There’s no need to just put up with discrimination” itself, and second, questions raised about whether Ueno’s personal life lines up with what she says. That second point, however, comes from anonymous forum posters and isn’t a publicly confirmed fact, so it’s worth taking with a grain of salt. Where exactly “discrimination” ends and “distinction” begins is a topic that’s genuinely hard to reach social consensus on, and this thread was no exception — it didn’t land on a clear conclusion either.

  • Kaoru Mitoma Could Leave Brighton This January, British Media Reports — 5ch: ‘Still Worth ¥3.9 Billion Even Though He’s Basically Free Soon’

Japan international midfielder Kaoru Mitoma (29), who plays for Brighton, could transfer away as early as January, British outlet “TeamTalk” reported on the 9th. A specialist site puts his market value at roughly ¥3.9 billion, a striking figure given his contract has less than a year left. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board, posters debated possible destinations, salary estimates, and injury risk, before the discussion spiraled into comparisons of fame and earnings with Shohei Ohtani and Naoya Inoue. Opinions were sharply divided.

At this rate it'll turn into 'Mitoma, just get on the pitch' lol.

Background and key points of this discussion

The ¥3.9 billion market-value figure is an estimate calculated by a transfer-tracking website, and it’s a different thing from an actual transfer fee or agreed price. This report itself is also only at the stage of a single British outlet describing a “possibility” — it isn’t information indicating that negotiations between clubs have actually taken shape. Where opinions split on the thread was over how much stock to put in this kind of transfer report. Skepticism was common, citing how recently he re-signed his contract, how the January window sees far less player movement than summer and is harder to complete deals in, and the fact that he’s expected to be away for the Asian Cup come January. On the other hand, some read the fact that his valuation remains high even with under a year left on his contract as confirmation of his proven Premier League track record. Note: unverified comments about his personal life have been excluded from this article.

A Japan premiere was held on September 10 for the new film adaptation of Seishi Yokomizo’s masterpiece ‘The Village of Eight Gravestones’ (in theaters September 18), where it was reported that Matsuya Onoe, who plays detective Kosuke Kindaichi, said, “I made a point of not watching how past acclaimed actors portrayed Kindaichi.” Kindaichi has previously been played by a string of veteran actors including Chiezo Kataoka, Kiyoshi Atsumi, Koji Ishizaka, and Ikko Furuya, and on 5ch this remark sparked a wide range of comments, from comparisons with past Kindaichis to unease over the story being set in the present-day Reiwa era — a setting not found in the original novel.

Going by the original novel, Tatsuya is 27. If the story is set in 2026 and his age carries over to the new film, that means Yozo's 32-person massacre would have happened around the year 2000. Even for a remote mountain village, that's just not believable.

    Re: #77
I guess everyone's image depends on what generation they were born into. These days you can watch the old stuff online, but back then, unless there was a rerun, only people who caught it live even knew it existed. For what it's worth, I watched the Furuya version live too, so that's my image of him (also, the immediate postwar Showa scenery in the novel didn't feel like a set back then — it was still basically the real thing).

Background and Points of Debate on This Topic

‘The Village of Eight Gravestones’ is one of Seishi Yokomizo’s signature works, and the role of detective Kosuke Kindaichi has been passed down through a succession of celebrated actors over the decades — Chiezo Kataoka (1951), Kiyoshi Atsumi (1977 TV drama), Ken Hagiwara in the theatrical film released the same year as Atsumi’s version, the later Koji Ishizaka version (1977, directed by Kon Ichikawa), and Ikko Furuya, who played the role for years in the TV series. This time Matsuya Onoe takes on the role in a new interpretation set in the present-day Reiwa era, and the thread saw wide-ranging discussion — from whether it was appropriate for him to say he “made a point of not watching” earlier portrayals, to whether he looks the part, to nostalgic attachment to the Ishizaka and Furuya generations. There were also pointed observations about the setting itself: some noted that combining the original novel’s age for Tatsuya (27) with a Reiwa-era setting would place Yozo’s 32-person massacre around the year 2000 — meaning the debate wasn’t just about personal taste but extended to questions of internal consistency. Note that comments mocking the actor’s physical appearance or body type have been excluded from this article.

    Background and Discussion Points

Accepting tattooed customers at tourist facilities and bathhouses saw a brief wave of spread around the time of the Tokyo Olympics, and the Takamatsu sauna’s move appears to be part of that same trend. On the other hand, under the Public Bathhouse Act, regular sento reportedly have a hard time legally refusing entry, and commenters in the thread noted that bathhouses in the Osaka-Kobe area have settled into routinely accepting tattooed customers. What drew attention to this particular case was that in just a month and a half after lifting the ban, concrete problems piled up one after another — smoking, damaged facilities, intimidating behavior, and false applications from organized crime members. In the thread, concerns about driving away regular customers mixed with criticism of the manager’s naive judgment. Note that the events described in the original article actually took place in June 2023, not 2026, so there’s a gap between the publication date and when things actually happened that’s easy to misread.

  • Kappa Sushi Issues Statement: ‘We Strictly Refuse’ Purchases Made to Resell Collab Merch

On September 10, Kappa Sushi’s official website issued a statement regarding the original merchandise distributed through its collaboration campaigns, saying “we strictly refuse purchases made for the purpose of reselling.” The move reportedly comes in response to worries that the items would appear on flea-market apps and auction sites before distribution even begins. On the forum, posters lined up to argue that the chain should overhaul its own inventory management and employee training before lecturing customers, with many bringing up the past uproar over Kura Sushi’s “Chiikawa” merchandise, and skepticism about how effective the statement would actually be was widespread.

    Thu, Sep 10, 8:12 PM

The official website of major conveyor-belt sushi chain “Kappa Sushi” was updated on the 10th with a statement titled “Notice and Request Regarding Our Collaboration Campaign.”

The official site stated, “We run a variety of collaboration campaigns, some of which include distributing original merchandise. While many customers look forward to receiving these items, we have also received concerned feedback regarding listings and resales appearing before distribution begins.” It continued, “Because there is a risk of items purporting to be campaign merchandise being listed on flea-market apps, auction sites, and the like before the distribution start date, we would like to inform you of the following points in advance so that you can enjoy the campaign with peace of mind.”

    22AnonymousSep 10, 2026 21:21
Can't this kind of resale just be blocked outright on flea-market/auction sites via copyright or trademark law?
Treat acquiring or transferring the items outside the campaign itself as infringement
Though whether the rights holder would actually go as far as suing is a separate question
    30AnonymousSep 10, 2026 21:27
    Re: #22
Copyright covers the right to make copies, so it doesn't extend to what you do with the original item afterward

When resold as a used good, trademark rights are considered exhausted — though putting the brand name on a remade or upcycled version of it can still be legally blocked
    23AnonymousSep 10, 2026 21:22
Honestly, resale that doesn't involve staff isn't that big a deal
Reselling itself isn't the evil here — you're just blaming resellers to cover up the fact that your employee training is the real problem

    33AnonymousSep 10, 2026 21:29
If they really wanted to crack down, I guess they'd have to ban listing the product name (trademark law might stop that) and the photos, and block searches for it on flea-market sites
    Though that doesn't sound realistic

    Re: #75
Do you even understand how the system works right now?
Getting an instant permanent ban over one offense would be brutal

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Conveyor-belt sushi chains have been through this before: Kura Sushi’s “Chiikawa” collab merchandise was listed on flea-market apps before distribution even began, raising suspicion that store employees were smuggling items out. Kappa Sushi’s statement this time appears aimed at heading off a similar situation, but it amounts to no more than a “request” and carries no legal force over buyers. Actually stopping listings on flea-market sites would require case-by-case action, such as asserting trademark infringement, and blanket enforcement by the platform operators is difficult in practice. On the forum, many argued that before warning customers about reselling, the chain should shore up its own inventory management and measures against employee misconduct — with skepticism focused less on whether reselling itself is right or wrong than on how effective the actual countermeasures are.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Tsubaki Factory is a Hello! Project group formed in 2015, and “Shakunetsu” is their annual summer concert series. The taiko drum staging has been a recurring feature at these shows for years, and the release of this latest live footage reignited a clash between those who see the staging as “outdated and uncool” and those who embrace it as a long-standing piece of the group’s identity. Some in the thread claimed the audience is “getting younger,” but no concrete data backs this up — it’s worth noting these are purely individual impressions. Much of the discussion also drifted away from the merits of the staging itself and into name-calling, with participants branding each other “idiots” or “old men,” falling short of a genuinely constructive exchange.

    Background and Talking Points

OCHA NORMA is an idol group under Hello! Project, and this remark came up casually during a talk segment of an official livestream — it isn’t an official agency statement or confirmed information about her health or actual lifestyle, which is worth keeping in mind. On the thread, most reactions warmly embraced her youthful sleep schedule, while others pointed out the contrast with how other, busier groups spent their summer. There were also some baseless speculation and off-color remarks about her private life and appearance, which this article has excluded. Within Hello! Project, workload and scheduling vary widely from group to group, and the reaction to this “summer vacation” story is, in part, a reflection of those differences in activity levels between groups.

The thread saw a clash between posters pointing to Hanshin’s history of “choking under pressure” and those calling the Giants’ recent struggles against Hanshin a “jinx.” Opinions also split over the string of hit-by-pitches against Morishita — some suspected intent, others chalked it up to simple wildness.

There aren't any more Hanshin-Giants series left, actually

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Hanshin has generally held the edge in recent head-to-head matchups against the Giants, and that point came up again and again in the thread. That said, this season’s 1.5-game gap comes with the Giants missing key players like Kazuma Okamoto and Shosei Togo, making the situation hard to sum up through simple roster comparisons alone. The debate over hit-by-pitches split between those who saw intent behind the high number of times Morishita has been hit and those who put it down to simple wildness — something that can’t be settled from forum posts alone. Posters also raised concerns that Hanshin’s pitching staff is being overworked, and debated how the large number of remaining games might affect the final standings, with a general consensus in the thread that the race will ultimately be decided by how the rest of the season plays out.

  • No More ‘Shinjū’: Government Panel Renames the Term Amid Criticism It ‘Hides Child Killing’

On September 10, 2026, a specialist panel under Japan’s Children and Families Agency announced it would stop using the term “shinjū” (double suicide) — in use for roughly 20 years in reviews of child abuse deaths — replacing it with “child abuse death involving a guardian’s suicide.” The move follows criticism from experts that “shinjū,” which also carries the meaning of two people in love mutually agreeing to end their lives, obscures the reality that children are being dragged into these deaths. On 5ch threads, posters pointed out that the term “muri shinjū” (forced double suicide) already existed to distinguish these cases, while others responded with weary remarks that renaming the term won’t actually reduce such deaths — some even cited the Edo-period shogunate’s own relabeling of shinjū as “aitaijini” (mutual death) as historical precedent.

    Asahi Shimbun

    (Updated September 10, 2026, 12:59 PM)

Cases that have until now been called “shinjū” will henceforth be referred to as “child abuse deaths involving a guardian’s suicide.” The Children and Families Agency’s specialist panel on reviewing child abuse deaths changed the terminology on the 10th, after roughly 20 years of continuous use. The agency itself also plans to revise its terminology. Experts had criticized the word “shinjū” — which also carries the meaning of a loving couple mutually agreeing to die together — for “concealing the reality of child killing.”

Plain "shinjū" is more like a young couple forbidden from marrying who both agree to die together.
Dazai Osamu's death, or the kabuki play "Sonezaki Shinjū," those are "shinjū."
Something like the Goebbels family under the Nazis would be "muri shinjū."

This country never changes — always fond of wordplay. What matters is the substance, not the wording. Just call it "muri(yari) shinjū" (forced shinjū) or "child-killing shinjū" and be done with it.

    183AnonymousSep 10, 2026 21:18
    Re: #174
    This isn't wordplay.
    It's a correction, not a game

    Background and Key Points

“Shinjū” originally meant a loving couple mutually agreeing to end their lives, with “muri shinjū” (forced shinjū) used as the proper term for cases where a parent drags a child along in death. In practice, however, news coverage has long blurred the two together, and the single word “shinjū” ended up obscuring abuse deaths in which the child had no say at all. This change by the Children and Families Agency’s specialist panel revises terminology that had been used in reviews for roughly 20 years, and lines up with a broader shift toward treating children as independent rights-holders rather than their guardians’ property. On the thread, though, many pointed out that renaming the term is a separate issue from tackling root causes like poverty and abuse prevention, with a persistent sense that changing the wording alone won’t change the reality.

  • Level-5’s Big Reveal Stream Delayed an Hour at the Last Second — 5ch: ‘Yep, That’s So On-Brand’

Level-5’s new-title presentation “LEVEL5 VISION 2026 II Dream,” originally set to begin at 9 PM JST on September 10, was pushed back to 10 PM at the very last minute due to equipment trouble. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha), posters piled on, noting that even the delay announcement itself came out late, and bringing up the old precedent of “Ni no Kuni II,” whose PS4-exclusive announcement was blamed for cooling the company’s popularity. Still, once the stream got going it pulled in a peak of around 130,000 concurrent viewers, with plenty of buzz also going to updates on “Yo-kai Watch 2: Haken” — a lively response despite all the delay drama.

Thought there'd be a bit more new footage, but there wasn't — people seem let down

    Background and Talking Points

Level-5 built an entire era around the “Yo-kai Watch” series, but around 2015 its announcement of “Ni no Kuni II” as a PS4-exclusive title provoked backlash from Nintendo users, and its Switch support lagged as a result. Drawing on that history, many posters in the thread mocked this stream delay as “so Level-5.” The real point of contention was that the delay announcement itself came out at the last minute and in a confusing way — the sarcasm was aimed less at the technical trouble itself than at how slowly it was communicated. Worth noting: thread comments about Yo-kai Watch 2’s multiplatform rollout being “locked down by contract” are just speculation from posters, not confirmed details from any official source. The 130,000 peak concurrent viewers figure also drew buzz largely from comparisons to Sony’s State of Play, which is a separate topic from how the broadcast content itself was received.
