  • Central League: Giants 5-3 Dragons [9/10] — Giants Win Again as Martinez Nails 250th Save vs. Chunichi, Izumiguchi’s Go-Ahead Hit Sinks Dragons

In Central League play on September 10, the Yomiuri Giants edged the Chunichi Dragons 5-3 to extend their winning streak. Izumiguchi’s go-ahead hit turned the game, and closer Raidel Martinez notched career save No. 250 against Chunichi — the very team he once closed games for. 250 saves is generally seen as the benchmark for Meikyukai (Golden Players Club) induction, and reaching it against his old team drew a wave of congratulations on the 5ch live-commentary board. Meanwhile, the gap to first-place Hanshin narrowed to 1.5 games, and the thread was split over how to read the magic number given the games remaining, worries about Hanshin’s lineup, and opinions on managerial strategy in the pennant race.

    Chunichi 0 1 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 |3

    Giants 0 1 2 0 0 0 0 2 X |5

Only 2 games left head-to-head with Hanshin.

    Finally down to 1.5 games!

I'm a Hanshin fan, but something's off with this team.
Morishita in particular is only swinging for home runs. Fujikawa leaves his starters in way too long, and he keeps running out veterans like Itohara and Nishi who don't belong on the active roster.

Honestly, Hanshin fans don't even want back-to-back titles that badly.

Because you know we'll just get crushed by SoftBank anyway.

Even if they don't win it all, coming close would be something.
But getting demolished by Hanshin every time is a problem.
If interim skipper Hashigami keeps fighting through the regular season and the Climax Series, he might get bumped up from acting manager to full manager.
As a fan of another Central League team, I'm honestly grateful whenever the Giants stick to their one-track "homegrown players only" managerial policy — it's a nice handicap for them.
But if Hashigami becomes full manager, that's the end of the homegrown-only tradition, and the Giants lose that self-imposed handicap going forward (´・ω・`)

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

For pitchers, 250 saves is generally treated as one benchmark for Meikyukai (Golden Players Club) induction, and Martinez reached that mark against Chunichi — the team he himself closed games for until just a few years ago. As a reference point for how converted closers stack up, the thread cited a list of career save totals, which drew plenty of interest. On the pennant race, the Giants have closed the gap with Hanshin to 1.5 games, but posters also noted that Hanshin’s larger number of remaining games means the magic number won’t drop right away — a nuance that’s easy to overlook if you look only at the raw game difference. Note: several posts making sweeping, disparaging generalizations about residents of a specific region have been excluded from this article.

  • Shiho Hashimoto’s Husband Places Raw Pork in Great Gidayu’s Coffin — “He Loved Char Siu”

Great Gidayu, a member of Beat Takeshi’s comedy troupe “Takeshi Gundan” who was active on comedy shows, died on September 7 at age 67. Talent Shiho Hashimoto revealed on Instagram on the 10th what happened at his funeral: her husband, comedian Guadalcanal Taka, went to a butcher shop on the morning of the funeral to buy a chunk of pork, saying “I want to put the char siu Gidayu always wanted to eat into his coffin,” and placed it inside. On the 5channel “Entertainment/Sports News+” thread, some read it as a heartwarming tribute to the deceased, while others were thrown by what they called the distinctly Showa/Heisei-era sensibility of Takeshi Gundan, with comments like “This would get slammed if it happened now, in the Reiwa era” and “This isn’t a nice story at all” — opinions were split.

    9/10 (Thu) 20:54

On the 10th, Shiho Hashimoto (58) updated her Instagram to reveal that her husband, Guadalcanal Taka (69), placed a chunk of pork in the coffin of his Takeshi Gundan colleague Great Gidayu, who died on the 7th at age 67, during the funeral.

Explaining the background, Hashimoto first posted the photo used for Gidayu’s funeral portrait, writing, “What a wonderful photo. He set off for the next world with a gentle, peaceful face, just like in this picture.” She went on: “First thing this morning, my husband went to a butcher shop and bought a chunk of pork. He said, ‘I want to put the char siu Gidayu always wanted to eat into his coffin.’” — describing how Taka had bought pork, Gidayu’s favorite food.

That is kind of sad. Someone's death is a pretty special thing after all. He used to even attend his disciples' fathers' funerals, way back when.

    Background and Points of Discussion

Placing grave goods in a coffin is a longstanding custom in Japan, and combustible items are often allowed at the crematorium staff’s discretion. Materials like plastic or metal that won’t fully burn, on the other hand, are sometimes turned down in advance — and the thread saw its own version of that debate, with some worrying it might damage the furnace and others countering that a little pork wouldn’t be a problem. Reactions to Taka’s gesture split along generational lines: some read it warmly, tying it to the irreverent, taboo-poking humor Takeshi Gundan built its name on across the Showa and Heisei eras, while others simply found it hard to relate to by Reiwa-era standards — reflecting a broader generational gap in what counts as funny. The article doesn’t disclose the cause of Gidayu’s death or details of any illness, so it’s worth noting that thread speculation — such as comments attributing it to diabetes — is unconfirmed.

  • Is Reselling Really Bad? 5channers Split Right Down the Middle

A thread on 5ch kicked off with the post “No joke, what’s actually wrong with reselling?” and quickly caught fire. Reselling itself isn’t illegal in Japan as a rule — regulation is limited to specific items like concert and sports tickets. Even so, the backlash of “I just don’t like it” and “it’s a breach of manners” remains strong. The thread saw a head-on clash between the self-responsibility camp (if you want it, get in line and buy it) and critics who argued that resellers buying up stock keeps products from reaching the customers they were meant for. Citing differences from secondhand shops, the mask shortage during the pandemic, and real examples from trading cards, the discussion expanded to cover supply and demand, and even whether companies gain or lose.

    1AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:47
If you really want it, get up early and line up.
If you can't manage that, or if you factor in the cost of transportation, paying a bit extra is nothing to complain about.

    37AnonymousSep 10, 2026 20:07

It's about supply volume as much as price. Manufacturers just need to mass-produce ahead of demand. Resellers might still buy it all up, but if goods are flooding the market, resale prices drop too.

So the product doesn't reach the consumers who actually want it directly, but it's fine because resellers buy it instead?
If that's really true, then the optimal move for a company would be to force employees into predatory in-house sales and then resell that same stock through their own shell reseller — is that okay with you?

Are there already big companies doing this, by any chance?
    87AnonymousSep 10, 2026 20:38
    Re: #74
Say a reseller buys 100 units but actually only manages to resell 50 — they'll stop buying next time. The manufacturer, unaware of that, will try to make even more than 100 units for the next run. The right quantity becomes impossible to gauge, and in the end the manufacturer loses out — that's the mechanism.

    Re: #110
    Oh, so it's a gift-tax workaround?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Laws regulating reselling itself in Japan are limited in scope, applying only to specific items such as those covered by the 2019 Act on Prohibition of Unfair Resale of Tickets. An individual reselling ordinary goods is, in principle, legal as long as the items aren’t stolen or counterfeit — the main requirement is that anyone running a continuous secondhand-goods business needs a secondhand dealer’s license (kobutsusho license). In other words, the “is it illegal?” question and the “is it acceptable manners?” question that split the thread are actually separate issues, and most of the emotional backlash stems from the latter.

During the pandemic-era mask shortage, mask reselling was temporarily banned in 2020 under the Act on Emergency Measures for the Stabilization of National Livelihood — government intervention like this only happens when a supply shortage becomes a full-blown social problem. Both claims raised in the thread — that “the market still functions fine even with resellers involved” and that “manufacturers and official sales channels only lose out” — capture only part of the picture; the real impact depends on the nature of the product and its supply chain. Readers can easily be misled into assuming reselling equals automatic illegality, but the reality is far more limited.

  • “It Was Definitely Semen” — Bodily-Fluid Incident Rocks Marseille’s Stadium in France

Ligue 1 club Marseille is in the spotlight after a female supporter posted on social media that someone splashed what looked like bodily fluid on her during the September 6 match against Paris FC at the club’s home ground, the Stade Vélodrome. Marseille issued an official statement saying, “We have been informed of an extremely serious incident and want to offer our full support to the supporters involved.” On 5ch, a wave of joking replies poured in questioning the truth of the line “it was definitely semen” from the original post, with some also pointing out that the woman’s father, who was sitting nearby, appeared to have been hit as well.

    Posted 9/9 (Wed) 14:00 — GOAL

An unprecedented incident appears to have occurred at the stadium of Olympique de Marseille (Ligue 1).

During the Ligue 1 match against Paris FC held on the 6th of this month at the home ground, Stade Vélodrome, a female Marseille supporter posted on social media that a man had splashed what looked like bodily fluid on her. Marseille — the storied French club that once had former Japan national team defender Hiroki Sakai on its roster — said in a press release: “We have been informed of an extremely serious incident and want to offer our full support to the supporters involved.” The report comes via RMC Sport.

    Background and Talking Points

The phrase “it was definitely semen” in the original article comes from the victim’s own social media post, not from any forensically verified information. Marseille’s press release itself only referred to a “serious incident” and never specifically named the substance. Violence and security problems at French stadiums have been repeatedly reported in recent years, and this post appears to have spread partly within that context. On the thread, the back-and-forth centered more on joking about “whether it really was semen” than on the actual details of the incident, with several replies noting that the woman’s father, standing nearby, had apparently been caught up in it too — but it’s worth noting that no new facts about the incident or any investigation were actually revealed on 5ch itself.

  • Indie Developer Confirms: “We Ported to Switch 2 Because It Supports Mouse Controls”

The mouse control feature built into the Joy-Con 2 for the Nintendo Switch 2 became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Gehā”) board after an indie game developer released a Switch 2 port of their game just about three months after its Steam debut — and stated flatly that the reason was “it’s the only console that supports mouse controls.” Development on the port reportedly began just two weeks after the Steam release. Thread commenters debated the fact that the mouse feature — which some had dismissed as “barely useful” since launch — directly drove a real porting decision, as well as the point that while PS5 and Xbox can technically connect a mouse, it isn’t standard equipment on those consoles.

    — Could you tell us why this ended up releasing exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2? Was compatibility with the Joy-Con 2’s mouse controls the main factor, or were there other reasons too, like performance or online features? Do you have any plans to expand to other platforms in the future?

Remorion: We went with the Switch 2 because it’s the only console that supports mouse controls. Expansion to other platforms is undecided for now.

By the way, I actually expected a smartphone version to come first, but that never happened.

Because they're bitter it's not coming to PS5.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Joy-Con 2’s mouse feature has been part of the Switch 2 since its April 2025 launch — you slide the controller sideways on a flat surface and use it like a PC mouse. Some voices doubted its usefulness from the start, and even among Nintendo’s own first-party titles, the only notable use case was a wheelchair basketball game. What sparked this discussion is that the Switch 2 version arrived only about three months after the Steam release — with development starting a mere two weeks after that Steam launch — and that the developer explicitly cited “the only console with mouse controls” as the reason for the port. It’s worth noting that eShop rankings are based on revenue rather than units sold, so placing 4th doesn’t necessarily reflect a high number of copies sold — an easy point to misread. PS5 and Xbox have long supported connecting a USB mouse, but whether it comes standard was the real point of contention in the thread.

  • Middle Schoolers’ Bad Behavior at Iwate Supermarket Leads to Ban on Solo Entry

It has come to light that at the Esuka shopping center in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture, middle school students have repeatedly engaged in disruptive behavior — playing dangerous games on the escalators, charging their phones without permission, leaving half-eaten food trash lying around, and loudly filming videos for social media. In one case a student even hurled abuse at a customer who told them to stop. The store has now taken the step of banning middle schoolers from entering alone. On a 5channel thread, opinions split over whether responsibility for discipline lies with the school or the parents, and many pointed out how hard it is to curb this kind of misbehavior now that corporal punishment is banned.

    Background and Key Talking Points

Cases of commercial facilities imposing measures like banning middle schoolers from entering alone have been reported in various places in recent years, typically used when staff warnings alone fail to curb disruptive behavior. This article doesn’t say whether the store consulted the school or parents beforehand, or how many students were involved. Where the thread’s opinions split was mainly over where responsibility for discipline lies — some argued schools have a duty to provide life guidance, while others countered that a school’s role is limited to teaching academics. Many also pointed out that with corporal punishment now banned, adults have few tools left to stop bad behavior on the spot — though this reads less like a call to bring back corporal punishment and more like frustration at the lack of alternatives. There was also discussion of the gap between urban and rural educational environments, though none of it identified specific students or stores.

  • Liella! Stream Sparks Viewer-Count Predictions — ‘Takoyaki Smoothie’ Recreation Also Steals the Show

On September 10th, Love Live! Superstar!!’s “Liella!” held a livestream right after a concert, and predictions about the simultaneous viewer count were flying around the 5ch live-commentary thread from the moment it started. Alongside comments like “It’ll probably hit around 5,000 anyway,” the recurring comparison with “Niji” (Nijigasaki High School Idol Club) got dredged up again, reviving an old argument about viewer numbers that factors in differing conditions. During the stream, reactions to how well the popular “takoyaki smoothie” merch was recreated also had people buzzing.

    Ohh no way lol ×

    Background and Talking Points

In the Love Live! franchise, a stream’s simultaneous viewer count is frequently used as a yardstick for comparing group popularity. The “Niji” referenced in this thread is shorthand for Nijigasaki High School Idol Club. Threads have long framed differing conditions — such as whether a stream airs right after a live show versus as a standalone broadcast — as “buffs” and “debuffs,” turning the discussion as much into a debate over comparison conditions as over raw numbers. This thread was no different, with posters citing past instances of the same argument and debating whether a simple viewer-count comparison is even valid. Worth noting: the actual final viewer count isn’t confirmed within the excerpted portion of the thread — the “3,000” figure in the thread title is a jab, not a confirmed number. The “takoyaki smoothie” is a recurring food item featured on stream, and opinions were split on how well it matched the version sold at past events.

  • SoftBank Wins Third Straight — Matsumoto Haru Notches 10th Victory, Yanagita’s Two Homers Down Fighters 3-2

In Pacific League action on September 10, SoftBank defeated the Nippon-Ham Fighters 3-2 to claim their third straight win. Starter Matsumoto Haru allowed just one run over five innings to pick up his 10th victory of the season, while Yanagita hit two home runs in the game and Masaki also went deep in a high-scoring slugfest. SoftBank’s record against the Fighters this season has now stretched to 5 wins, 18 losses, and 2 draws, and some posts brought up manager Shinjo’s preseason declaration of a ’96-win’ target. The thread was dominated by sarcastic remarks about the growing gap and banter between fans of both teams.

Winning on three home runs — that's usually the Fighters' whole thing, they basically stole their own opponent's playbook. All hail Gīta.

    Background and talking points

SoftBank’s season record against Nippon-Ham has widened to 5 wins, 18 losses, and 2 draws, driven largely by the gap in pitching stability and the raw power of SoftBank’s lineup. Matsumoto Haru picked up his 10th win of the season on this day, and Yanagita’s two-homer performance shows just how directly the team’s core players are driving results. On the other hand, it’s worth noting that manager Shinjo’s preseason talk of “96 wins” was more a rallying cry delivered in the excitement of the season opener than a formal target declaration. The thread was full of taunting rooted in the lopsided head-to-head record, but much of that back-and-forth amounted to rivalry-driven mudslinging between fan bases — this article focuses mainly on the excerpts relevant to the actual game.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Baseball] Pacific League H 3-2 F [9/10] Hawks win third straight, Matsumoto Haru 5 innings 1 run, Yanagita 2 HR, Masaki HR, Nippon-Ham vs Hawks now 5-18-2“.

  • Streamer Daisuke Hori’s 24-Hour Broadcast Adds ‘Nap’ Rule, Sparks Uproar on 5ch

Streamer Daisuke Hori is in the middle of a “24 hours a day, for one week” broadcast, and a new rule allowing “unlimited naps” has become a hot topic on 5ch. Hori has built his brand around being a “short sleeper” who supposedly only needs 30 minutes of sleep, and when the production staff explained that naps, passing out, and microsleeps don’t count as “sleep,” viewers — who already had their doubts — pushed back hard. The thread turned into a nitpicky back-and-forth over where exactly a nap ends and sleep begins, with commenters even comparing it to how little sleep parents of young children get.

There's also a wildly popular course — just 150,000 yen (roughly $1,000) — that teaches you to become a short sleeper like Hori and use your time more efficiently.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Daisuke Hori has built a following around time-management content, branding himself as a “short sleeper” who functions on just 30 minutes of sleep, and this week-long, round-the-clock broadcast was being watched as a live demonstration of that claim. The sticking point for the thread was the broadcast team’s explanation that “naps,” “passing out,” and “microsleeps” are all treated as separate from “sleep” — logic which means the “30 minutes of sleep” tagline never technically breaks, no matter how much total rest time adds up. Viewers seized on the vagueness of that distinction, and the thread lit up with half-joking comparisons to how little sleep parents of young children get. Some replies also referenced unverified rumors about Hori’s past activities; this article excludes those unsubstantiated claims.

  • Buy a Car, Change Your World: 5ch Thread Says It Made Them Experts on Geography and Landmarks

A post titled “After I bought a car, I got to know the geography, the landmarks, and all the good restaurants — my whole range of movement expanded” went up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board (a general live-chat board), drawing over 40 replies. The thread split over whether owning a car itself is what determines your range of movement, or whether the real factor is where you live — city versus countryside. One side argued that cities offer a dense living sphere even without a car, while the other insisted that in rural areas life simply doesn’t function without one — and the two sides never quite met in the middle.

If a big car is all it takes, would my Hiace (Toyota van) work too?
    49AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:09
If we're talking about range of movement, isn't where you live the more important factor?
The area you can cover in a city without a car is far denser than what you can cover in the countryside with one

Best of both worlds is living in the city AND owning a car though

Not having a car means my savings pile up. When I actually need to drive, a car-share works fine
    56AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:13

    So, what's your savings balance?
    62AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:17
The one type of person I never want to become is someone like Re: #54

Money is a resource for getting experiences

Cutting experiences just to save money is putting the cart before the horse

There's zero value in having your assets peak the moment you die
    57AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:14
If you're going out for good food, odds are you're drinking, so you wouldn't drive there anyway — especially with a woman along

Just don't drink then, simple as that

    66AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:20
It's true that "having a car is more convenient and expands your range of movement," but
depending on where you live, it can take your livability from 0 points to 50
while somewhere else it only goes from like 80 points to 85
After that it's just a question of cost-effectiveness
    68AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:22
The problem is it takes too much time to get around
Trains are usually faster and easier anyway, and if you absolutely need a car, a rental works fine

For anyone outside central Tokyo, owning a car is just the default
The whole idea that "having a car is more convenient and expands your range" is exactly the kind of thing only a carless Tokyoite would say

If you think about it by population, cities have way more people

Half the country's population lives in what's called the "regions"
Meaning anywhere outside the Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya metro areas
Saying it's "way more" is just wrong

    Re: #73
That's why carless working adults are basically only a Tokyo-central-wards thing
I mean, even within Tokyo, once you're outside the 23 wards, isn't owning a car the norm even for Tokyo residents?
Anywhere in the Kanto region besides Tokyo proper, working adults owning a car is the default
Same in Osaka and Nagoya — working adults owning a car is the default there too
One way or another, it's a car-dependent society everywhere, so it's essential

Isn't that more about how urban an area you live in than whether you have a car?
    85AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:32
Going on about how just having a car changes your range of movement
really has a "country bumpkin" vibe to it
Well, I guess in the countryside you can't go anywhere without one
    87AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:34
    Re: #85
In the countryside a car is mandatory, so people there never even stop to think about the range-of-movement pros and cons of owning one in the first place
    88AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:34
    Re: #85
Even in the city, most of it is basically suburbs
It's true that a car changes your range of movement there too

Re: #94 If you already get that point, why did you go and post something like Re: #85?
    94AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:46
I get that "having a car is more convenient!" but
jumping from there to "so not having a car means you're poor!" is way too extreme a take
Because by that logic, if you actually had money you'd hire a driver
which would make anyone who drives their own car just as "poor"
    99AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:49
    Re: #94
Look… the whole "a car is convenient to have" framing is itself a carless person's way of thinking
Seriously, outside central Tokyo, owning a car is just the default
In Osaka, being carless is only excusable if you're a college student living alone
    106AnonymousSep 10, 2026 19:53
I mean, cities developed specifically so you wouldn't need a car
There's no need to deliberately go against that and drive anyway
It's like using an expensive machine to climb the stairs in an apartment building that already has an elevator

    Re: #106
You see this opinion a fair amount on Nan-G (this board's regular nickname), but
there's data showing that even among city dwellers, the higher their income, the higher the car ownership rate
So "the city is developed enough that you don't need a car" doesn't really hold up

    Re: #106
You're just someone who walks everywhere, aren't you

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Car ownership rates are higher in rural areas than in cities, so the two sides of this debate start from fundamentally different premises: people in city centers with well-developed public transit who “don’t feel inconvenienced without a car,” versus people whose daily living sphere simply isn’t reached by public transit at all. The thread’s disagreement also never resolved, since some see the expansion of one’s range of movement as an effect of owning a car, while others see it purely as a matter of population density where you live.

As one reply pointed out, higher-income groups do tend to have higher car-ownership rates, and it’s actually been observed that even in urban areas, people are more likely to own a car as their income rises. It’s worth keeping in mind that the simple “city = no car needed” dichotomy tends to ignore factors like disposable income and family situation.

Claims like “owning a car makes you popular with women” or “no car means a narrow range of movement” don’t go beyond personal anecdotes, and no verifiable data was presented in the thread either. It’s entertaining as a read, but shouldn’t be taken as a generalizable conclusion.
