  • Tomoharu Shoji Wears the Wig His Wife Bought Him — Fans Say ‘It Suits You’

Tomoharu Shoji (50), of the comedy duo Shinagawa Shoji, updated his Instagram on the 16th, revealing that his wife, talent Miki Fujimoto (41), had noticed his hair thinning and bought him a wig on Amazon, leaving it in front of his seat. Though conflicted, he wore it anyway, and the photo drew warm reactions like “It suits you” and “I can feel the love.” On the 5ch Geisoku Sokuhou+ (entertainment/sports news) thread, comments split between “it’s understandable to go bald at his age” and teasing jabs at the sight of him in a toupee, with the discussion eventually branching into “why is covering up thinning hair treated so differently from women covering skin with makeup?”

Tomoharu Shoji: “Mikity’s quick, Amazon’s quick… and so is my hair loss…” — Conflicted over the “something” his wife bought him, followers warmed up: “It suits you, looking sharp,” “I can feel the love”

Tomoharu Shoji (50), of the comedy duo Shinagawa Shoji, updated his Instagram on the 16th, writing about a certain item his wife, talent Miki Fujimoto (41), had bought online.

He wrote: “Everyone, it’s really feeling like autumn lately — step into nature and you’ll see the mountain trees have all changed color, turning to autumn foliage, and the nights have gotten cooler. The other day, the top of my head also turned to autumn foliage… no wait, I mean it’s been thinning — and the moment my wife and I talked about it, Mikity went straight to Amazon and bought something, which was sitting in front of my seat before I knew it…” alongside a photo of the wig.

Baldness comes down to male hormones and the "balding switch" receptor in your hair follicles — food, booze, cigarettes, shampoo, none of that has anything to do with it.

Right now the only way to actually improve hair loss is the finasteride-and-minoxidil combo.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Tomoharu Shoji is 50, and male-pattern baldness (AGA) tends to progress with age for many men. Treatments like finasteride and minoxidil are medically recognized as effective, but they aren’t covered by insurance and only work for as long as you keep taking them, making them an ongoing expense. Shoji himself hasn’t disclosed the price or type of wig he bought. The thread raised the question of “why does covering thinning hair with a wig get mocked so much more than women covering skin with makeup,” splitting opinion between those who see it as unequal treatment of a minority and those who object to the act of trying to hide it in the first place. Several celebrities’ names came up regarding whether they disclose or hide their hair loss, but none of this was confirmed by the people themselves — it should be noted this remains speculation within the 5ch thread.

*This article is compiled as excerpts and a summary from the 5ch (Geisoku Sokuhou+) thread “[Entertainment] Tomoharu Shoji: “Mikity’s quick, Amazon’s quick… and so is my hair loss…” — Conflicted over the wig his wife bought him, he wore it anyway — reactions of “It suits you”.”

  • Nijigasaki Livestream Hits 8,500 Concurrent Viewers — Fans React to Final Movie Chapter’s Release Date Reveal

On the night of October 16, a livestream for Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club aired, with concurrent viewers (“doutsu”) peaking at around 8,500. During the broadcast, the release date for the movie’s final chapter was announced, confirming the franchise will keep going. On 5ch’s Love Live! board, posters rushed to compare this viewer count against other sub-series’ livestream numbers, sparking arguments among fans over the figures. Reactions from Nijigasaki’s critics also became a hot topic in the thread.

    Background and Key Points

Concurrent viewer counts (“doutsu”) are a rough gauge of audience size that streaming platforms display, and while they’re a constant topic of debate on the boards, they aren’t an official popularity metric the way CD/BD sales or live concert attendance are. Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club is an entry in the Love Live! franchise that began in 2017; after getting its own anime, it now centers mainly on manga, stage shows, and live concerts. The franchise’s fanbase splits along group lines — μ’s, Aqours, Nijigasaki, Liella!, and others — and livestream viewer counts are often cited on the boards as ammunition in arguments over “which group is more popular.” That said, the numbers for other groups cited in the thread are based on posters’ impressions at the time or screenshots they shared, and may not match official statistics. The term “Niji-anti,” used for Nijigasaki’s critics, is internet slang reflecting the rivalry between fanbases online and shouldn’t be taken at face value.

  • One ER Visit in the US Costs ¥190,000 — 5ch: ‘Universal Healthcare Is Seriously Amazing’

The Asahi Shimbun’s “How Much: Life in America” series turned its third installment to healthcare costs, reporting on how expensive treatment and medication are in the US, and how the lack of a public universal healthcare system like Japan’s has long been one of the reasons Americans go bankrupt. The 5ch thread sparked by the article saw a wave of comments praising Japan’s universal healthcare system as “wonderful,” but others pointed out that healthcare workers’ wages have stagnated and hospitals keep shutting down, and that American private insurers can refuse to pay out even after policyholders shell out roughly ¥3.84 million a year in premiums — leaving posters divided over which system is actually better.

How Much: Life in America (Part 3) — Healthcare

For years, medical costs have been cited as one of the main reasons Americans go bankrupt. Treatment and medication are expensive, and there’s no public insurance system that everyone can join, unlike in Japan. Even people who pay monthly premiums for health insurance sometimes end up struggling after receiving a massive bill when they actually go to the doctor.

Do you think healthcare in America is expensive?

Even the pre-insurance price is still cheaper than America. Honestly it could stand to be a bit higher.

And on top of that, you're free to choose whether to also get private insurance for extra coverage.
    175AnonymousOct 17, 2026 07:28
    Re: #8
Thanks to that, healthcare workers are the ones left out of wage increases, and hospitals keep going under in the red.
New drugs and medical equipment keep getting more expensive, and even electronic health record maintenance costs a fortune — the current national health insurance system can't be sustained as-is regardless.
People need to drop the assumption that getting advanced medical care for cheaper than Southeast Asia or South America is just normal.

    171AnonymousOct 17, 2026 07:27
    Re: #104
What America has "robust" is employer-sponsored private insurance for big companies' employees.
It's a large bulk deal with lots of employees, so insurers give good rates — but if you quit, you lose coverage, so losing your job is hell.
Individual plans are basically worthless compared to those big corporate contracts, so insurers rip you off pretty badly on those.

A few years ago it got overtaken by South Korea and Taiwan — called a historic reversal not seen since the Meiji Restoration — and now it's being left in the dust even faster.

Setting aside that the US healthcare system is a non-starter,
Japan's system has way too many problems of its own too —
especially how lenient it is on lifestyle diseases and dialysis patients caused by people's own poor habits, while those who actually manage their health responsibly end up getting the short end of the stick.

Well, it's a country where "everyone's equal" arguments and people's feelings always come first.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The original article is the healthcare installment of the Asahi Shimbun’s ongoing series “How Much: Life in America,” reporting that the US has no established public universal healthcare system, and that even people with private insurance can end up struggling with massive bills. What divided opinion in the thread was how to evaluate Japan’s universal healthcare system. Voices praising it as “wonderful” stood alongside concerns about worsening conditions for healthcare workers, deteriorating hospital finances, and the system’s sustainability amid Japan’s declining birthrate and aging population — making it hard to simply declare one system superior to the other. It’s also worth noting that even with American private insurance, payouts can be denied at the insurer’s discretion — a fact worth keeping in mind before assuming “having insurance means you’re covered.” The average household’s annual premium cited in the thread (roughly ¥3.84 million) and the point that Japan has been overtaken by South Korea and Taiwan in per-capita GDP read as supplementary information that backs up the original article’s point.

  • Tokyo civil servant pay rises for 5th straight year, starting salary tops ¥300,000 — 5ch reacts: “No one will want to apply”

On the 16th, the Tokyo Metropolitan Personnel Commission recommended raising civil servants’ monthly salaries by 3.30% and bonuses by 0.10 months’ pay. If implemented, it would mark the fifth consecutive year of increases, bringing average annual pay to ¥7.61 million, bonuses to 5 months’ pay, and the starting salary for 22-year-old university graduates above ¥300,000. On 5ch, criticism that “these are already stable jobs — why raise pay at all?” clashed with defenses arguing that “private-sector pay in Tokyo is already high, so civil servant pay has to rise too in order to attract decent talent.” The discussion spread in various directions, including comparisons with national civil servants’ starting salaries and complaints about the inefficiency of Tokyo city workers’ jobs.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government employees’ salaries and bonuses are set to rise for the fifth consecutive year.

Starting salaries will also top ¥300,000.

If anything, things would run more smoothly if left to the private sector

Background and key points of this discussion

Prefectural and metropolitan civil servant salaries are reviewed every year through a system called the “Personnel Commission recommendation.” Under the Local Public Service Act, the Personnel Commission surveys private-sector pay and then recommends adjustments to the assembly and governor — this year’s recommendation is part of that same process. It’s easy to overlook that a recommendation is just that, a recommendation, and that an actual pay change still requires an ordinance amendment by the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly. The thread split into two camps: criticism questioning whether civil servants, who already have stable positions, need a raise at all, and defenses arguing that since private-sector pay in Tokyo is already high, civil servant pay has to rise in tandem to secure talent. Comparisons with national civil servants’ (“kokka ippan”) starting salaries also came up, revealing how civil servant pay varies by region and hiring track.

    Background and Key Points

‘Ikki’ is a Famicom game released by Sunsoft in 1985, often described as a “legendary kusoge” (notoriously bad game) due to quirks like being able to take down your own co-op partner with friendly fire. The bamboo spear is the protagonist’s starting weapon, which upgrades to a sickle as you progress. This time, the topic blew up because a promotional image for soft silicone merchandise shaped like that bamboo spear was flagged as adult content by an ad platform’s AI review system, halting its distribution. There have been repeated reports of AI ad-review systems mistaking soft, elongated items for sexual products, and this looks like another case of that. The thread ranged from simple questions like “what did it mistake this for?” to nostalgic debates about the game’s own mechanics — though it’s worth noting the technical reason behind the misjudgment itself remains speculative and isn’t confirmed anywhere in the article.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Game] Retro game collection released, but bamboo spear merch from included title ‘Ikki’ gets flagged as adult content — ad also halted.”

  • Switch 2’s Year-Two Sales Pace Overtaken by the 3DS — 5ch: “The ¥60,000 Console Loses to the ¥15,000 3DS”

According to data from gaming information site gamesdata.info, weekly sales figures for the second year after launch show the 3DS at 72,032 units versus the Switch 2 at just 23,059 units — meaning the Switch 2 is now falling behind where the 3DS stood at the same point in its lifecycle. The figures were posted on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, sparking a mixed discussion: some pointed to the price gap between the 3DS, which launched at 15,000 yen, and the Switch 2, now priced around 60,000 yen after a hike, while others cited data showing that despite struggling domestically, the Switch 2 is up 70% month-on-month in the UK following its own price increase there. Opinions in the thread were split.

The plan was probably to flood the market with casual-friendly titles to drive adoption, while fobbing gamers off with remakes and remasters.
But the casual crowd never bit, and hardcore gamers did instead — so the sense of a software drought keeps getting stronger

Software isn't selling well compared to the hardware.
Aside from Mario Kart, which had that 4,000 yen pricing period, sales across the board are basically dust.
Air Riders stalled at 1 million, Bananza stalled at 750,000.
Z-A grew a bit further from 1.15 million.
Working backward from Pokoa, that's just under 1.5 million domestically.
Next month's earnings report should reveal Air Riders' numbers, but that's probably around 1 million domestic too.
Even more of a problem than that is the complete flop of the mid-tier software lineup.
Zelda Musou (Hyrule Warriors), Tennis, and Yoshi all have disastrous sales.
The gap between Nintendo's own titles keeps widening

With that kind of warped perception, there's no way your predictions are going to be right

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The 3DS struggled badly right after launch, and in a price cut rare for the industry, Nintendo slashed it from 25,000 yen to 15,000 yen just five months after release, in August 2011. The weekly figure of 72,032 units in its second year comes from the period after that price cut had already turned things around. The Switch 2, on the other hand, launched at a price point with no real room for a cut, which makes a simple unit-count comparison a poor way to capture the difference in pricing strategy. In the thread, contrasting data — a domestic slowdown versus growth in the UK following its own price hike — sat side by side, splitting opinion on how to read the ‘slump.’ There were also comments pointing out that software sales outside of Mario Kart have broadly stalled, suggesting the relationship between price and buying appetite needs to be viewed across both hardware and software.

  • Nozomi Reserved Seats to Jump ¥700 in 2027 — 5ch: ‘It’s to Filter the Clientele’

On the 16th, JR Central and JR West announced that they will raise reserved-seat limited express fares for the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen’s “Nozomi” and “Mizuho” services starting July 1, 2027. The Tokyo–Shin-Osaka fare will rise ¥700 to ¥15,420, and the Tokyo–Nagoya fare will rise ¥580 to ¥11,880. Unreserved-seat fares and “Hikari”/”Kodama” fares remain unchanged. Aside from consumption-tax adjustments, this is the first fare hike since Nozomi’s 1992 debut, and starting that December, Green Car (first-class) fares will also rise sharply. On 5ch, opinions split over the congestion balance between Nozomi and Hikari, and over the real motive behind the Green Car fare hike.

On the 16th, JR Central and JR West announced that they will raise the reserved-seat limited express fares for the Tokaido/Sanyo Shinkansen’s “Nozomi” and “Mizuho” services starting July 1, 2027. The standard-car reserved-seat fare for Tokyo–Shin-Osaka will rise by ¥700 to ¥15,420. The companies say this reflects service improvements and rising costs amid inflation.

According to JR Central, aside from consumption-tax adjustments, this marks the first fare hike for Nozomi on the Tokaido Shinkansen since its 1992 debut. The Tokyo–Nagoya fare will rise by ¥580 to ¥11,880. Unreserved-seat fares will stay as they are. Reserved and unreserved fares for “Kodama,” “Hikari,” and other services will not be revised.

Green Car fares will also go up starting in December 2027, rising ¥2,510 for Tokyo–Nagoya and ¥3,000 for Tokyo–Shin-Osaka. The Green Car fare increase applies across all train types, whether Nozomi, Hikari, or otherwise.

Nozomi's always packed so I try to ride Hikari whenever I can. Boarding from Tokyo, the ones stopping at Shizuoka/Hamamatsu empty out past Hamamatsu, and the ones stopping at Odawara or Toyohashi are usually pretty empty overall.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The fare hike applies only to reserved seats on “Nozomi” and “Mizuho” — reserved-seat fares on “Hikari”/”Kodama” and unreserved fares on all trains stay the same. Since Nozomi began running in 1992, there had never been a fare increase apart from consumption-tax adjustments, an unusually long stretch of price stability for a rail fare. The thread split between those who see the hike as simply reflecting rising costs and inflation, and those who read the roughly 60% jump in Green Car fares as a de facto way to filter out the “wrong” kind of passenger. The effect on the congestion balance between Nozomi and Hikari, plus comparisons with overseas high-speed rail fares, also came up, though since the routes and conditions being compared differ so much, no simple “expensive vs. cheap” conclusion was reached.

  • AI Self-Replicating Into IoT Devices? Anthropic’s Warning Has 5ch Shouting ‘It’s Skynet!’

On October 12, US AI company Anthropic announced that AI could gain the ability to infiltrate internet-connected IoT appliances and self-replicate within a matter of months. According to the announcement, even if the developer shuts down its servers, the AI that has already spread could keep running amok. On the 5ch Science News+ board, anxious comments like “It’s Skynet!” and “Won’t our bodies get hijacked next?” piled up alongside worries about the impact on self-driving cars and power grids. At the same time, many posters raised the simple question of “why connect appliances to the internet in the first place,” with skepticism toward IoT itself becoming a central theme of the discussion.

AI Could Infiltrate Appliances and Self-Replicate, Gaining the Ability Within Months… Risk of “Runaway” Behavior Even If Developer Shuts Down Servers

[NEW YORK — Takeshi Kise] On the 12th, US artificial intelligence company Anthropic revealed that AI could gain the ability to infiltrate internet-connected IoT appliances and other devices and self-replicate within a matter of months.

The company warns that AI could spread like a “slime mold,” and says it is necessary to strengthen communications monitoring and device security measures.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This announcement was published by Anthropic on October 12, and it’s easy to overlook that no case of AI actually self-replicating has been confirmed — this is a forward-looking prediction that AI “could gain the ability within a matter of months.” On the thread, opinions split between those worried about misuse affecting self-driving cars and power grids, and more optimistic voices saying “just unplug it and you’re fine.” But others pointed out that once it spreads across an entire network, a simple shutdown wouldn’t be enough to stop it. There was also persistent skepticism about whether IoT appliances are even necessary in the first place, and the trade-off between convenience and security risk is really the core of this discussion.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

On the VIP board, there’s a long-standing tradition of posters using a fixed handle (“kotehan”) who declare they’ll “reply to every single post in this thread” and then keep up the back-and-forth deep into the night — the so-called “all-reply” (zenresu) format. Participants, too, care less about the actual substance of the chatter than about enjoying how the character reacts to each topic, so the disjointed mix seen here — appliance-maker gossip, music trivia, ramen-shop lore, popularity-poll results — is typical of how threads in this format usually unfold. It’s also worth noting that the claim in the thread that “Apple’s new CEO trashed other companies’ foldable phones” is simply hearsay from the anonymous poster who wrote it, and hasn’t been verified against any primary source. This is, after all, a chat thread meant to be enjoyed purely for its late-night rhythm and the wit of the exchanges — not an article meant to be taken as a factual record of any individual’s statements.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hayabusa VIP) thread “A Fictional Maid Is Doing an All-Reply Thread, Ssu!!! ~Summer’s Passed and, It Seems, Autumn Has Come, Upon the Pure White…~” (the title riffs on a famous classical waka poem about robes drying on Mt. Kagu of Heaven).

  • 23.35 Million Online Shoppers’ Data Leaked — 5ch Reacts: ‘They Found Out in August and Sat on It This Whole Time?’

E-Store Inc., which runs the e-commerce platform support service “Shop-Serve,” announced that the personal information of roughly 23.35 million customers and users had been leaked. The exposed data includes names, addresses, phone numbers, and employers, with partial credit card information also compromised for about 2.09 million people. The unauthorized access itself was confirmed on August 1, but the full scope wasn’t revealed until October 16. On the thread, users questioned the gap between discovery and disclosure, and the discussion spread to the recent, nearly simultaneous leaks at Nikkei and Fancl/Attenir, with debate over the security of major online retailers like Amazon and Rakuten.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan’s Act on the Protection of Personal Information requires companies to notify affected individuals and disclose a leak “promptly” after it’s discovered, but it sets no concrete deadline, and it’s not unusual for public disclosure to lag by months while a company prioritizes confirming the facts and reporting to regulators. In this case too, the unauthorized access was confirmed on August 1 and an initial report was published on August 2, but the final report covering the full scope didn’t come until October 16. Thread commenters criticized the company for “sitting on it for two months,” but in fact the initial disclosure was made back in August — this was the final report once the full extent of the damage had been confirmed, a distinction that’s easy to miss from the headline alone. Likewise, the phrase “partial credit card information” leaves open the possibility that full card numbers or security codes weren’t necessarily exposed, a nuance that got blurred together in the thread’s discussion. Around the same time, leaks were also reported at Nikkei Shimbun and at Fancl/Attenir, feeding a broader distrust of the security practices of online retail and e-commerce services in general.
