  • Japan’s Kaina Tanimura, Making First-Ever National Team Start: ‘I Couldn’t Do Anything Right’ — World-Class Reality Check Hits Home

On October 1, in their opening Kirin Cup match at Yokohama International Stadium, Japan’s national team faced Ecuador and battled to a scoreless 0-0 draw before narrowly winning the penalty shootout 5-4. Forward Kaina Tanimura, making his first-ever start for the senior national team, was substituted off at halftime, and after the match admitted he keenly felt the gap with the world’s best, saying “I couldn’t do anything right” and “I can’t cut it at this level.” On 5ch, discussion went beyond Tanimura’s individual performance to broader team issues — Yuito Suzuki’s missed chances, questions over how Ayase Ueda was used after coming on in the second half, and worries that the next generation of strikers simply isn’t developing.

Unable to convert his chances. Frustration laid bare

Kaina Tanimura, pulled from the pitch after just the first half, didn’t hide his frustration after the match.

Japan faced Ecuador on October 1 in their opening Kirin Cup match at Yokohama International Stadium, winning the penalty shootout 5-4 after the game finished 0-0.

Eh, this is probably the only call-up he'll ever get.

    Re: #3
More than Tanimura, the real problem was Yuito Suzuki missing shot after shot.

Ao Tanaka's incredible through ball → Tanimura → Suzuki, and the fact that it didn't end in a goal is painful.

    Re: #51
Maybe they brought Ueda on in the second half just to have him for penalties, but the shot chances in this match all came in the first half, so honestly I think starting Ueda from kickoff would've actually won them the game in regulation. As for the shootout, every kick except Soma's was read by the keeper and it was razor-thin — against a Croatia-level goalkeeper that probably doesn't work.

The way Marinos fans are trashing Ayase Ueda is brutal. They should knock it off, for Tanimura's sake.

Ueda was developed by Marinos too, you know.

Good for him, got a nice memory out of it. He's probably not going to grow much more from here anyway.
    8AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:34
Tanimura should just shoot himself. Why is it that so many guys stop shooting once they make the national team?
    44AnonymousOct 2, 2026 08:16
    Re: #8
He probably just couldn't convince himself he should shoot — he said himself the level is that high. He should just say screw it and let it fly…

    Re: #8
Ao Tanaka shoots plenty for his club and is genuinely top-class at scoring, but with the national team he clearly holds back and sticks to defending, creating chances, covering gaps — playing the invisible helper role. Feels like Moriyasu might be giving some weird mentality-based instructions behind the scenes with the national team.

I don't think so. I bet Koki Ogawa, who delivered results right away, gets brought back instead.
    12AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:36
No way he was suddenly going to get past Pacho (an Ecuador defender). Even Ueda and Maeda couldn't do anything either.
    13AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:36
Age aside, he's better than Keisuke Goto or Shiogai. In the end though, I came away thinking the team needs Ogawa up front.
    15AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:37
Ecuador was just straight-up strong. Even Ueda could barely do anything, so it is what it is.
    18AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:39
    Re: #15
Even when Ueda or Zion Suzuki do nothing, Moriyasu's drawn to their talent so they keep getting called up. Everyone else stops getting picked if they don't produce results.

    Re: #18
Moriyasu kept playing Ueda no matter how bad he was — and that led to huge failures at the Olympics and the Qatar World Cup. He'd probably keep using Tanimura too if he were 23 or under, but well, can't be helped.
    16AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:37
Nakano, Tanimura, and the J.League fans — just coming away understanding that is enough.
    20AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:46
He wasn't as bad as people are saying. Even Ayase Ueda himself has said he was completely unable to hold up the ball at first and it took him years to learn it. Holding up play against Champions League-level center backs is something that gets you dispossessed even in actual CL matches. And it's not like swapping in Ueda created many more chances either — he didn't even get a shot off.
    21AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:47
Feels like the next generation just isn't developing, no? Is this going to be okay?
    28AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:50
    Re: #21
Ueda couldn't do anything at the Qatar World Cup either. It's only natural that Goto and Shiogai can't do much yet. They're still young, so Moriyasu might keep calling them up to help them grow.

    Next up is Michiwaki…
    22AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:47
    Don't call up a 28-year-old. He'll be 32 in four years — that's older than Ogawa already.
    24AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:48
They probably just called him up because the match was at Nissan Stadium. Moriyasu, resign already.
    26AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:50
It wasn't just Tanimura who looked shaky — pretty much every attacking player did. Given the opponent's strength and that it was his first call-up, I'd say he actually did okay.
    29AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:51
His one-touch play was decent considering it was his first time playing with these guys. Compared to Ueda, Goto also lacks the ability to control and hold the ball. That said, he's the same generation as Ueda, so I wouldn't expect much more growth from here.
    32AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:53
    Re: #29
Even Ogawa gets dropped from the squad. Still, compared to the younger guys, Ogawa and Tanimura are the better players. But Moriyasu might pick Goto or Shiogai anyway, just based on age.
    30AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:52
If Osako were still in his 20s he'd be the clear first-choice center forward, but a hold-up player of his caliber doesn't come along easily.
    31AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:53
Honestly, he wasn't bad at all. He held his own out there.
    33AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:55
He's 28, so this is probably his last call-up.
    35AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:57
Since he's from Hanamaki Higashi High School (the school famous for producing baseball stars), I was hoping he'd kick off an "Iwate whirlwind" in soccer this time.
    36AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:57
Ayase Ueda is pretty much a lock for now.

Maeda, Tanimura, Ogawa, Goto, Shiogai — it'll come down to a fight between these guys for the Asian Cup. Skill versus youth.
    37AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:59
He couldn't even hold the ball up with his back to goal. Fail.

Nobody's asking him to dribble past defenders and smash in a goal. That's the lowest bar of any country's demands on its forwards.
    38AnonymousOct 2, 2026 08:00
Yuito Suzuki was actually worse — he's the one who should've been subbed off.
    75AnonymousOct 2, 2026 08:55
This whole thing just reeks of marketing to me. Like, "the hard-working underdog who clawed his way up from the JFL to J1 finally makes the national team! Dream story, right?! So exciting, right?!"

Kiyota's fanboys don't seem to realize he actually makes his living playing soccer.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Kirin Cup is a friendly tournament, and Tanimura’s first start can be seen as an experimental look at a next-generation candidate. While some argue it’s premature to judge him on results alone, the thread showed notable concern over how Ayase Ueda has been used and over the stalled development of young players like Keisuke Goto and Kento Shiogai. Worth noting: Tanimura’s individual performance wasn’t uniquely bad — plenty of forwards, including Yuito Suzuki, also failed to convert clear chances — so pinning the blame solely on Tanimura doesn’t quite match what actually happened in the match. Also, a handful of posts about unrelated topics like currency exchange rates and politics appeared in the thread but were excluded from this article as irrelevant to the main topic.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Geisokuho+) thread “[Soccer] “I Can’t Do Anything Right” — The “World-Class Standard” Japan Debutant Kaina Tanimura Felt Firsthand. “I Can’t Cut It at This Level As I Am””.

  • His Band Just Landed a Major Label Debut — Without Him, 5ch Thread Reveals

The poster says he’s a member of a band formed with childhood friends from junior high, and that he’s been involved in the songwriting. But he revealed that as the band’s major label debut moved forward, he alone was cut from the lineup — the reason given being that he’d supposedly keep the band from making it big. He says no one told him directly; the news reached him through other members. Replies piled up asking about the circumstances of his departure, his musical skill, and how the band got started, while some commenters suspected the story was too dramatic to be real — more like a template lifted from online fiction.

    98AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:33
    Re: #94
Yeah, nobody wants to look at reality. Especially the Lost Generation (Japan's 'ice age' cohort who graduated into the brutal job market of the late '90s–2000s), who make up the bulk of Narou's readership.

    Background and Key Points

What split this thread was a single question: how much credence to give the “factualness” of the post. Replies #41 and #90 cast doubt, asking whether the poster was really even a band member and whether the whole saga followed the template of a typical “banishment” story, and the poster himself, in reply #93, pushed back against the idea of a “Narou”-style comeback twist. This shows how the “banishment story” structure that has spread online in recent years has become a go-to benchmark readers use when judging whether a real-life account is credible. At the same time, the post itself suggests that whether a band lands a major label debut hinges not just on individual skill but on a mix of factors — the label’s commercial judgment, the relationships between members, and so on. That said, this is only the poster’s one-sided account; the other members’ and the label’s side of the story have not been presented.

A thread titled “Bipolar NEET (27), it’s been 14 days since Mom disappeared” popped up on 5ch’s News VIP board. The poster, a 27-year-old NEET with bipolar disorder, complained that two weeks after his mother left home, he can barely manage laundry or meals. Commenters clashed between those recommending concrete job-hunting steps — Hello Work (Japan’s public employment office), Type-A welfare workshops, disability-hire programs — and others pointing out that the poster has repeatedly started similar threads before, with opinions also split over the harsh words he says his mother directed at him.

I'm paying 50,000 yen a month toward household expenses, and I still get treated like a slave at home. Honestly, life's been refreshing since Mom's gone.

    Background and Points of Debate

Type-A welfare employment workshops involve a formal employment contract with a guaranteed minimum wage, but depending on a user’s income, facility usage fees can sometimes apply — suggesting the poster’s complaint that “they charge facility fees” may stem partly from a misunderstanding of how the system works. Additionally, the legal duty of support under Japan’s Civil Code concerns mutual financial assistance between relatives; it does not directly mandate continued cohabitation or mean a parent “can’t escape.” Some longtime users in the thread pointed out that the poster has repeatedly started threads with similar content before, and opinions were divided on how seriously to take this latest complaint.

  • Japan Wins Penalty Shootout 5-4 — Shiogai Kento: “Do I Look Bad at Penalties?”

At the Kirin Cup, Japan played out a scoreless 0-0 draw with Ecuador through full time and went to a penalty shootout. With goalkeeper Zion Suzuki coming up big in goal, Japan won it 5-4. Forward Shiogai Kento, who’d come on as a substitute in the 86th minute, was lined up to take Japan’s seventh penalty — but the shootout was decided before his turn came around. When asked afterward whether he’d wanted to take one, he reportedly answered, “I didn’t really care either way.” Once that quote made the rounds, 5ch lit up over Shiogai’s short playing time, reports that coach Nakamura Shunsuke sets the kicking order using data, and comparisons with other national team players.

Soccer, Kirin Cup (Oct. 1, Japan 0-0 Ecuador — Japan win 5-4 on penalties, Nissan Stadium)

Japan, ranked 17th in the FIFA World Rankings (as of July 20, same throughout), took on 25th-ranked Ecuador. The match ended scoreless after full time, sending it to a shootout, which Japan won 5-4 with goalkeeper Zion Suzuki (24, Aston Villa) coming up with key saves.

Forward Shiogai Kento (21, Wolfsburg), who came on in the 86th minute on the left of the front two, spoke calmly afterward: “I wanted to play a bit more. I want to keep pushing myself in training so I get used next time.” He’d apparently been slated to take Japan’s seventh penalty. Asked, “Did you want to take one?” he answered flatly, “I didn’t really care either way.”

But except for Soma, the keeper was reading everyone and it was razor-thin — felt like a Croatian keeper would've saved a few of those. Over-relying on penalties for the real thing isn't good; you need to win it properly within the match itself.

Ueda might've been brought on in the second half just to have him ready for kicks, but the actual scoring chances in this match came in the first half, so I think just starting Ueda would've let them win it properly in open play. Suzuki Yuito not converting kept coming up and it was a waste.

    95AnonymousOct 2, 2026 08:44
Re: #86, is this guy always like that?

    Background and Talking Points

Penalty order used to often be settled by players simply raising their hands, but more national teams are now deciding it ahead of time based on data analysis, and the thread picked up on reports that coach Nakamura Shunsuke is behind that process for Japan. Shiogai Kento has seen limited playing time at Wolfsburg even since the club’s relegation to Bundesliga 2, and that disconnect — “he barely plays, yet gets all this attention” — is what’s driving the split opinions in the thread. There’s also a reminder that shootout success depends heavily on the opposing keeper’s reads and a player’s composure under pressure, so praising one converted kick too much is premature; several posters argued fans should judge the whole match, not just the shootout.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Soccer] Shiogai Kento comes on in the 86th minute, shootout ends before his turn — “I asked Moriyasu, ‘Do I look bad at penalties?’”“.

  • McDonald’s Halts Sales of 10 Beef Patty Items at All 91 Hokkaido Stores

On October 1, 2026, Japan McDonald’s announced it would temporarily suspend sales of 10 items that use beef patties — including hamburgers and the Big Mac — at all 91 stores in Hokkaido until the 2nd, after some deliveries of beef patties were found that may not have met quality standards. No health effects have been confirmed so far, but the company has not disclosed exactly what standard was not met. On 5channel threads, speculation spread over the delivery route and the cause, with some users wondering about a link to the heavy rain that hit Chiba the previous night, and others bringing up past meat-mislabeling scandals.

On the 1st, Japan McDonald’s announced that some beef patties delivered to its Hokkaido stores may not have met quality standards, and that it would suspend sales of certain items at all 91 stores in the prefecture until the 2nd. The company is working to secure replacement stock and arrange supply, aiming to resume sales on the 3rd.

According to the announcement, the suspended items are 10 products that use beef patties, including the Hamburger, the Bacon Lettuce Burger, and the Big Mac. Items not on this list continue to be sold as usual. The suspension has been in effect at every store since the night of September 30, and no health effects have been confirmed to date.

Japan McDonald’s is investigating how the patties came to be delivered, stating: “We deeply apologize to our customers. We will work to thoroughly strengthen our quality control.”

Like what, for instance, wouldn't be noticeable until after it's already delivered?

Background and Key Points of This Story

Japan McDonald’s has only said the delivered beef patties “may not have met quality standards,” without disclosing what specifically fell short. It’s not unusual for food recalls or sales suspensions to withhold those details, and this case is no exception. On the thread, users floated the possibility that the heavy rain hitting Chiba on the night of September 30 affected a plant or logistics, or that a refrigerated truck lost power — but these are all speculation, not anything from the official announcement. There were also references to the past Meat Hope fraud scandal and the old “worm meat” urban legend about McDonald’s, though readers should note neither is directly tied to the facts of this incident. The suspension covers only the 10 beef-patty items at the 91 Hokkaido stores; items outside that list, like fries and the Teriyaki Burger, remain available for purchase as usual.

A son who knocks up someone else's daughter, and a father who tries to settle it with a bag of pumpkins — that alone makes them both trash.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

‘From the Northern Country’ kept spawning specials at milestone moments even after the original series ended in 1981 — ’84 Summer,’ ’87 First Love,’ ‘2002 Testament,’ and more — making it a long-running franchise, and this ’83 Winter’ entry is one of the earliest of those specials. The thread’s recurring question of ‘why this episode’ seems to trace back to the fact that the fan-favorite ‘First Love’ had just been rerun on terrestrial TV, plus ’83 Winter’ being a length that fits neatly into the broadcast slot — though that’s purely viewer speculation, not a reason ever stated by the production side. It’s also worth noting that while the series carries a strong image as a heartwarming drama about Hokkaido’s great outdoors, it actually depicts plenty of heavy human drama too, including affairs and money troubles — several commenters pointed out this gap, which may come as a surprise to readers who haven’t watched the series.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geisoku Sokuho+) thread ‘[Tidbit] Fuji TV Decides to Air Tribute Program for Sō Kuramoto, ‘From the Northern Country 83 Winter,’ on October 9 — ‘An old man named Matsukichi Sawada (Chishu Ryu) wanders into Rogo…’.’

  • Juice=Juice’s New Song “Kareinaru Revenger” (Magnificent Revenger) Divides Fans — Penned by Yamazaki Aoi

Hello! Project group Juice=Juice has released the audio for their new song “Kareinaru Revenger” (Magnificent Revenger). The lyrics were written by Yamazaki Aoi, and posters on 5ch’s Hello! Project board shared that she isn’t an exclusive songwriter for Juice=Juice — she reportedly provides around 10 songs a year to other acts as well. Opinions in the thread were split: some praised the adventurous arrangement, which works in vocal percussion and rap, as “very Juice,” while others worried that “they haven’t put out a single all year, and this is what we get?” Plenty of posts also singled out Arisawa Ichika’s violin and Dangohara’s vocals.

    Re: #96
Has Juice=Juice ever actually been lame, though?

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This year, Juice=Juice released the completely new song “Kareinaru Revenger” (Magnificent Revenger) digitally without putting out a single under their own name. Lyricist Yamazaki Aoi isn’t an exclusive songwriter for Juice=Juice — thread posters shared that she provides around 10 songs a year to other groups as well, citing Milk as one example. Opinions split over whether the arrangement, which works in vocal percussion and rap, should be read as “a bold departure from the usual Hello! Project sound” or as “directionless wandering,” and posters repeatedly vented frustration with the agency’s (Up-Front’s) production approach. Looking at the group’s recent release lineup — More → Kurakura → Burabare → Ketsuron → Girameki → Kareinaru — some pointed out that this one is being judged more harshly since it’s a brand-new song rather than an existing or album track. That said, it’s worth noting that the reasoning behind the “no single” policy and any sales-related speculation are purely posters’ guesses — no official explanation has been given.

*This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Breaking] Juice=Juice’s Newest Song “Kareinaru Revenger” Audio is HEEERE ━━━━(゚∀゚)━━━━!! [Yamazaki Aoi].”

  • Juice=Juice Fan Cheers On Angerme: ‘5ch Says They Could Still Blow Up in Ten Years’

A thread went up on the Hello! Project board after someone said that reading the comments on Ise Suzuran’s blog brought them to tears. The poster, a Juice=Juice fan, was addressing the separate group Angerme, writing, “I hope you get your reward someday — maybe in ten years you could still blow up, so don’t give up.” That set off a wider discussion in the thread, ranging from differences in the two groups’ blog posts, to the “song gacha” theory (where popularity hinges on whether you get handed a good song), to Hello! Project’s distinctive group-management cycle — with opinions split on what really separates the groups that break through from the ones that don’t.

Hello! Project has 7 groups, and the agency can really only push one group at a time once every 7 years. They don't have the manpower, budget, or staff to push two groups in the same year. So the chance comes around on a 7-year cycle. Even if you stick it out as an idol for 10 years, most members only get one real shot during their whole time in the group.

I think what it's saying is: reform the group over a long stretch of time.

Angerme fans say there's no real difference in looks or skill between Juice=Juice and Angerme — Juice=Juice just happened to land a good song.
But in reality, better members have been gathered into Juice=Juice precisely because that group gets along better and has more drive to improve,
which makes it easier for members' skills to grow.
That's why the agency keeps bringing good members into it.

Angerme fans ask for good members and good songs to be handed to Angerme,
but what actually has to happen first is making the group's atmosphere better so the agency wants to bring in good members.
Then, once they've grown, you need the agency to think 'let's give them a good song and push them.'
That takes group reform over a long span —
so you should figure on it taking something like 10 years.
And the fans' job is to support the group through that slump.
Because if you don't support them, they might get disbanded — you need to make the agency believe it's worth keeping them going.

    62AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:50
They whiffed with 'Vanilla,' so the next shot at the lottery isn't until next year

Background and key points of this discussion

The “song gacha” theory that kept coming up in the thread rests on the fact that Hello! Project’s groups, all under the same talent agency, effectively compete with one another for songs and media exposure. The claim in post 17 that “with 7 groups, you only get pushed once every 7 years” is somewhat exaggerated, but the underlying premise — that a limited pool of resources gets divided among multiple groups — is a widely shared assumption among fans, and it’s industry background that’s easy for a first-time reader to miss. The thread’s main fault line was between those who chalk up differences in popularity to “songs and luck of the draw” and those who argue that “how well members get along and how driven they are to improve” shapes the agency’s investment decisions — so it isn’t simply a story of good or bad luck. It’s also worth noting that differences in blog topics likely reflect individual members’ personalities and schedules rather than directly measuring the group’s overall workload.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Juice=Juice fan: “I hope Angerme gets their reward someday too — they could still blow up in ten years, so don’t give up”.”

  • Female researcher spent 10 years chasing Japan’s genital-worship festivals — 5ch: “Women enjoy it more than men”

Across Japan there are so-called “strange festivals” (kisai) that treat genitals as objects of worship, and an article profiling a female researcher who spent 10 years following these events became a hot topic on 5ch’s News Speed+ board. Posters quickly named specific festivals — Kawasaki’s “Kanamara Matsuri,” the Hōnen Festival at Tagata Shrine in Aichi, and Iwate’s Konsei Festival — with many explaining their origins as traditions praying for fertility and the prosperity of descendants. At the same time, some voiced concerns that the festivals are “out of step with the times” and might “eventually be branded as sexual harassment and disappear,” while others pointed to actual photos to argue that “women seem to enjoy it more than men do.” The thread saw a wide range of views exchanged over the meaning of keeping these festivals alive and how sexuality should be regarded.

A giant “mikoshi” portable shrine shaped like a male phallus is carried through the streets, and couples hoping for children straddle a phallic sacred object. Some rituals even feature figures representing “Hyottoko” and “Okame” (comic masks symbolizing male and female) coming together.

Across Japan there are unusual festivals that treat genitals as objects of worship. One woman has spent the past 10 years following these so-called “strange festivals.”

For a long stretch of history, people died quickly — from plagues, famines, and being drafted into samurai wars. Of course praying for children and for descendants to thrive was just the norm.

    Re: #112
Shin'ichi "Aum" Nakazawa (I say this not to disparage him, but because it's literally the basis of his international reputation), who hails from an old lineage in Kai, portrayed Mishaguchi as a Jōmon-era sacred power — that is, as a universal belonging to an ancient cultural stratum. In doing so he became a source of relief for people burdened by sexual stigma, including those in the nightlife trade. The sanctity of the phallus itself is still openly, ordinarily present all over Bhutan even now — it's a culture shared across the "utagaki cultural sphere," i.e. the "evergreen broadleaf forest belt" stretching from the southern foothills of the Himalayas through Okinawa, Kyushu, and Shikoku, all the way to the Pacific coast of Honshu (as the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki passages on Yamato Takeru suggest, this held true as far as the area around Mt. Tsukuba).

    Re: #112
One more thing: Mishaguchi itself actually seems to carry a strong element of the Suwa serpent-god/sun-god worship. That's a great and powerful tradition, but there are plenty of other serpent gods out there too.

It's extremely well known that the Bible is the origin of the term "onanism" (masturbation)!
    134AnonymousSep 30, 2026 16:32
In Japan, mythology itself treated the prosperity of descendants as a good thing.

It was the West that treated sexuality as evil.
Then in the Meiji era, Japan was told, "If you want to become a civilized nation like us, stop doing such barbaric things,"
    and Japan changed accordingly.

I think it was the Hideyo Noguchi Museum — when I went years ago, they had a whole collection of wooden carvings shaped like male and female genitals, the kind people used to enshrine in the ceilings of houses, all gathered and displayed.
Went again recently and they were gone.
Guess history like this just gets erased.
    167AnonymousSep 30, 2026 17:07
How does something like this even work as a festival in the first place.

There are actually quite a few festivals like this, praying for children or for descendants to thrive.
Back then there probably wasn't this modern pressure to censor genitals that literally everyone has.

Festivals for the "pee-pee" get all the fame, but isn't there a portable shrine for the "who-ha" too?
    192AnonymousSep 30, 2026 17:31
    Re: #174
Can't help it — a "who-ha" is just harder to sculpt than a "pee-pee." There's not enough sticking out to work with.
    195AnonymousSep 30, 2026 17:33
Genitals that grant children are precious, right? If I had the money, I'd love to hire some young shrine maidens and build my own genital-worship shrine. But without history behind it, it wouldn't feel sacred, I guess.

    Re: #195
Genitals existed even before humanity did.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Festivals enshrining genitals are said to originate from prayers for bountiful harvests and the prosperity of descendants in agricultural society. Kawasaki’s Kanayama Shrine (Kanamara Matsuri), Tagata Shrine in Komaki, Aichi Prefecture (Hōnen Festival), and Iwate Prefecture’s Konsei Festival remain events officially run by local governments or shrines today, and it’s not unusual for them to be covered by overseas media as tourist draws. These festivals saw a decline after the Meiji era, when Western-influenced sexual morality led to them being viewed as public indecency, but many survive today thanks to a reevaluation of them as folk belief. In the thread, two views clashed: concern that the festivals “might be branded as sexual harassment and disappear,” and the counterpoint, backed by photos, that “women seem to enjoy it more than men.” This reflected a divide between those who link the festivals’ survival to the issue of sexual harassment and those who emphasize their legitimacy as folk tradition. Worth noting: the researcher’s own reasons for being drawn to these “strange festivals” are explained only in the original article itself, while the thread’s discussion mostly stuck to debating the festivals’ merits and trading bawdy banter.

  • Wakatsuki Chinatsu’s ‘No Phone Case Means Zero Risk Management’ Comment Sparks 5ch Firestorm

Talent Wakatsuki Chinatsu reportedly said on the April 29 broadcast of TV Asahi’s “Wakatsuki Chinatsu’s Noisy Psychology Test” that people who don’t use smartphone cases have “zero risk management ability” and that it “makes her question their sanity.” The remark stemmed from a segment asking, “What’s the thing about men’s phone cases that makes you go ‘hmm’?” where “no case” was one of the options and became the flashpoint. In response, 5ch saw a wave of rebuttals grounded in personal experience — from people who’d gone over a decade without a scratch despite skipping a case, to those who said rugged or foldable phones simply don’t need one. The discussion also branched into case functionality, like heat dissipation and how handy flip-style cases are, so it never settled into a simple for-or-against debate.

Talent Wakatsuki Chinatsu (42) appeared on TV Asahi’s “Wakatsuki Chinatsu’s Noisy Psychology Test” (airing Wednesdays at 2:20 a.m.) on the 29th, where she showed clear distaste for people who don’t use phone cases.

In the psychology test segment, viewers were asked, “Which type of men’s phone case makes you go ‘hmm’?” with four choices given: “brand-name,” “patterned,” “practical,” and “no case.”

    Re: #132
Phones just keep getting bigger anyway

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The remark Wakatsuki Chinatsu made on a psychology-test TV show, reported via Yahoo News, is the starting point for this thread — her blanket claim that “not using a phone case equals zero risk management.” On the thread, the caseless camp fired back with plenty of real-world counterpoints and functional arguments: “I’ve gone over 10 years without a scratch and no case,” “my phone’s rugged, so I don’t need one,” “cases hurt heat dissipation.” The pro-case camp, meanwhile, offered their own preferences, like “flip cases are handy on the train” and “Elecom’s ZEROSHOCK is unbeatable,” so it never boiled down to a simple yes-or-no fight. One thing readers might misread: Wakatsuki’s comment was just one opinion on a variety show, not something backed by any statistical data on actual breakage risk. Likewise, most of the thread’s counterarguments were personal anecdotes along the lines of “mine never broke” — neither side brought objective data to the table. In the end, against her strong claim about “risk management,” what piled up were grounded, practical responses shaped by differing habits, preferences, and use cases.
