Tribute to Sō Kuramoto: ‘From the Northern Country ’83 Winter’ Airs Oct. 9 — 5ch: ‘Chishu Ryu and a Young Fubuki Jun, Worth It for That Alone’

The story

Following the passing of screenwriter Sō Kuramoto on September 18 at age 91, Fuji TV announced it will air a tribute special, “From the Northern Country ’83 Winter,” on October 9 at 9 p.m. The broadcast marks the 45th anniversary of the original series’ debut. On 5ch, users reminisced about nostalgic scenes — like the old man Matsukichi Sawada (played by Chishu Ryu) who turns up in Rogo — and shared memories of the cast, while others noted that instead of a fan-favorite episode like “First Love,” the choice of ’83 Winter felt “plain,” with comments like “they should’ve aired a more famous episode,” and plenty of posts speculating about the reasoning behind the pick.

Who's gonna watch this moldy old thing?

Re: #2
Plenty of people still rent it at Geo or TSUTAYA (Japanese video rental chains).
3AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:43
So how'd they end up paying back the 7 million yen, anyway?
8AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:47
Re: #3
It's never explained in the show, but Nakachan has a line like 'I've got a good idea,' so maybe that's how it got sorted out.
Or was it 'we've got a good idea'?

Re: #3

Everyone pitched in with Nakachan leading the charge, I think — and Goro took out a loan for his share.
7AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:47
Is that the one where the house burns down?
10AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:48
Re: #7
Nope.
The fire one is the episode with 'The kids are still eating, damn it!'
11AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:48
Never seen the show at all — is this special actually some standout episode worth deliberately picking?
19AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:54
Re: #11
Probably because the most popular one, 'First Love,' just got rerun on regular TV recently, and the only other one short enough to fit the time slot was '84 Summer.'
12AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:50
'First Love' is hands down the strongest special, no contest.
28AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:00
Re: #12 This. Rei-chan is the strongest heroine.
14AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:51
Guess so lol
Probably wouldn't hold up watching it now, though.
Well, that's fine too.
17AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:53
This is the most obscure one out there.
Why'd they pick this dud when the actor who played Shokichi already retired?
103AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:54
Re: #17
The Shokichi actor had already retired by the time he came back for the follow-up (the one where he marries Hotaru) — they dragged him out of retirement for it.
18AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:53
This special's gotta be the least memorable one in the series.
22AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:57
I wish BS11 would air the whole series from episode one, like they do with the 'Wataru Seken wa Oni Bakari' series (a long-running family drama).
23AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:57
When you say 'From the Northern Country,' I think of Tunnels' parody of it.
They should rerun that sketch from 'Minasan no Okage Desu' (a classic variety show).
25AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:59
A lot of the storylines would be a compliance nightmare by today's standards, so they've gotta be picky about which episode they air.
26AnonymousOct 2, 2026 06:59
Just air the one where the log cabin burns down.
That one's got the 'the kids are still eating, damn it' line too.
27AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:00
I love 'Kaze no Garden' ('Garden of the Wind') too — wish they'd rerun that one as well.
30AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:01
Chishu Ryu's 'Maaa-meee' is the thing to watch for here.
31AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:01
Chishu Ryu… a young Fubuki Jun…
Worth watching for that alone.
35AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:04
You guys really know your stuff.
36AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:04
Re: #35
We watched it live back in the day lol.
50AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:20
Pretty wild they're airing something this old in prime time.
52AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:22
Re: #50 It's fine — the only people watching TV at home at 9 p.m. on a Friday are old folks anyway.
91AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:43
Re: #50
They'll probably cram some comedian's reaction-cam into the leftover space from the 4:3 aspect ratio.
97AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:48
Re: #50
First time 'From the Northern Country' has hit terrestrial prime time in a while.
51AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:20
So they're airing 'Always: Sunset on Third Street' on 10/23 too?
At this point I can't even keep track of whether Yoshioka's playing Jun, Mitsuo, Ryunosuke Chagawa, Dr. Goto, or Sen no Rikyu.
59AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:26
Re: #51
He gets beaten up in 'Minus 0.0' or something too, doesn't he.
58AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:26
This one's plain and boring. At least air the '84 Summer episode — the one with the computer, the fire, and 'the kids are still eating, damn it!' lol
63AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:28
Re: #58
They'll probably air that one before long too.
77AnonymousOct 2, 2026 07:35
Given the title and how TV hypes it up these days, you'd expect some heartwarming drama about Hokkaido's great outdoors, but it's actually full of messy stuff like affairs, abortion, and debt.

Re: #77
A son who knocks up someone else's daughter, and a father who tries to settle it with a bag of pumpkins — that alone makes them both trash.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

‘From the Northern Country’ kept spawning specials at milestone moments even after the original series ended in 1981 — ’84 Summer,’ ’87 First Love,’ ‘2002 Testament,’ and more — making it a long-running franchise, and this ’83 Winter’ entry is one of the earliest of those specials. The thread’s recurring question of ‘why this episode’ seems to trace back to the fact that the fan-favorite ‘First Love’ had just been rerun on terrestrial TV, plus ’83 Winter’ being a length that fits neatly into the broadcast slot — though that’s purely viewer speculation, not a reason ever stated by the production side. It’s also worth noting that while the series carries a strong image as a heartwarming drama about Hokkaido’s great outdoors, it actually depicts plenty of heavy human drama too, including affairs and money troubles — several commenters pointed out this gap, which may come as a surprise to readers who haven’t watched the series.
