  • Vtuber Erupts Over Mushoku Tensei’s “Paul the Two-Timer” Scene, Sparking 5ch Debate Over the Show’s Values

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board (a live-chat/reaction board) picked up on a Vtuber’s on-stream fury while watching the anime Mushoku Tensei, specifically the scene where the protagonist Rudeus’s father, Paul, cheats on his pregnant wife, fathers a child outside the marriage, and then announces he’s taking a second wife. The thread split between posters who took issue with polygamy as a concept and those who argued the real problem was the infidelity and the child born out of wedlock — a case of talking past each other. Others pointed out that the protagonist himself later ends up in a similar situation, and that the original novel began so long ago that its values have drifted from those of today’s otaku fandom, turning the discussion into a broader debate about how the series holds up.

Looks like it was Paul's two-timing scene that set her off

Mushoku Tensei was always the kind of series that probably shouldn't have gotten an anime

It's a life-spanning story in the vein of Dragon Quest V [the RPG famous for following its hero from childhood through marriage and fatherhood], so this was bound to come up eventually

If Pekora [likely Usada Pekora, the popular Hololive Vtuber] watches season 2, she's probably going to feel for Norn, who's left speechless over Rudeus's own polygamy

That's simply because there are even more readers who love harem setups than those who hate them. The core readership is hikikomori NEETs [shut-in young people not in work, school, or training] anyway

Old-school otaku who go on about 'freedom of expression' and 'fiction isn't reality' are increasingly out of step with where otaku values stand in 2026. Frankly, that type usually can't even keep up with recent anime and fiction anymore

    Re: #117
That one's popular because of the comic adaptation, which threw in its own original material. The anime stuck to the original novel instead, so of course the people who got into it through the manga were unhappy

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Mushoku Tensei is a series whose harem elements and the protagonist’s tangled family relationships have sparked debate before, and this time the spark was the scene where his father, Paul, cheats, fathers a child outside his marriage, and then declares he’s taking a second wife. The thread split over whether the backlash was really aimed at polygamy as a concept, or at the specific acts of infidelity and having a child out of wedlock — with many posters arguing the latter was the actual issue. Some also noted that the protagonist himself later lands in a situation resembling his father’s, complicating any easy “bad father, righteous son” reading. On top of that, since the original novel began many years ago, posters pointed to a widening values gap with today’s otaku audience — all of which suggests opinion on the series is far from settled.

  • Got a Watch? 5ch Weighs In With Everything From Grand Seiko to Apple Watch

The thread started with a simple question — “What kind of watch do you guys wear?” — and 5ch users jumped in one after another to share their go-to pieces. Answers ranged from domestic brands like Seiko, Grand Seiko, and G-Shock, to Swiss and other overseas brands like Omega’s Speedmaster, TAG Heuer, and Luminox, all the way to smartwatches like Garmin and Apple Watch. Beyond the Swiss-versus-domestic preference debate, the conversation branched out into whether a cheap Rolex bought in Hong Kong 30 years ago was real, and even the incident where luxury watches were stolen from Nakano Broadway — turning what started as a casual “what’s your watch?” chat into something much bigger.

Use Apple Watch for health tracking

    Background and Talking Points

Watches have diversified into mechanical, quartz, and smartwatch options, and this thread offers a neat snapshot of that spread. Grand Seiko stands out as a luxury line well-regarded both in Japan and abroad, while G-Shock keeps its loyal following thanks to its balance of durability and price — and plenty of replies also leaned toward health-tracking and fitness features, favoring devices like the Apple Watch or Garmin. The “luxury watch theft” mentioned in the replies refers to an incident that has actually been reported in Japan in recent years, hinting at a growing wariness in some circles about carrying branded watches around. And as with the back-and-forth over a souvenir watch bought in Hong Kong, questions about the authenticity of parallel-import or counterfeit goods have long dogged watch enthusiasts — a perennial topic even as a running joke.

  • Has the PS5 Really Gotten Weaker? 5ch Debates Shrinking Exclusives and Retail Space

A thread titled “Has PlayStation really gotten ‘weaker’?” appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. It was sparked by the decline in exclusive titles, with posters citing this year’s PS first-party sales figures (Wolverine in the low 20,000s, etc.) and the shrinking shelf space and number of retailers carrying PlayStation products as evidence. Meanwhile, some pushed back, pointing to PS5 titles’ strong showing in Golden Joystick Awards nominations as proof the console’s presence remains solid, splitting opinion on how to interpret the drop in exclusives. Others noted that recent PS5 titles have grown homogeneous, leaning heavily into dark fantasy and soulslike genres — keeping the debate from boiling down to a simple “strong vs. weak” binary.

Probably up through the PS2, when the appeal was the rise of CDs/DVDs and how cheap they were. From the PS3 onward it was propped up by Blu-ray and graphics, with shaky footing the whole way.
    29AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:54
Even if it were strong, no Japanese games come out and it's wall-to-wall Western games — who'd want that? Is 'strong' or 'weak' even the right question here?
    30AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:54
If you're measuring strength against the past, the Switch 2 looks like it's gotten weaker too, so singling out the PS5 as having gotten weaker feels off.

That said, here's one thing that's certain right now: the PS6 has no bright future ahead of it. Unless it offers performance at or above the PS5 Pro while staying priced where ordinary people can actually afford it, it'll end up a losing console.
    31AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:55
The moment you ignore the obvious comparison sitting right there, it's nothing but sophistry. Fabricating an opinion while ignoring just how far Nintendo has fallen has no value.

    35AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:58
It's not that it got weak — it just got found out. Flattering media, strong-arming retailers, locking down third parties, maneuvering so even multiplatform games feel PS-exclusive — then Jim Ryan admitted he didn't really get the Japanese market or Japanese games and redirected the budget, and that ripped the veil right off. It was all stagecraft, all smoke and mirrors.
    36AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:58
Even without GTA5, Nintendo hardware caught up to five years' worth of domestic PS5 sales in just a few years. So whatever people say about GTA6, it's just a momentary gust of wind.

In the end, the idea that one single game can save a console is about as realistic as a maiden's prayer (i.e., pure wishful thinking).

There's zero sign of organic word-of-mouth buzz. That's because everything up to now was arranged and staged by the company, going all the way back to the SCE days. 81AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:22
Just saying 'PlayStation is done for' gets the point across.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Behind the decline in PS5 “exclusive titles” lies a business decision Sony made starting around 2022 to lean into multiplatform releases and introduce the positioning of “lead platform titles.” This strategy brings major titles to PC as well to widen revenue opportunities, meaning a simple count of exclusives doesn’t fully capture the real picture. It’s also worth noting that a high number of Golden Joystick Awards nominations is a different axis from actual sales volume, and the figures cited in the thread (like Wolverine’s sales numbers) are self-reported tallies circulating on 5ch, not official sales data. The shrinking retail floor space is also tied to the market-wide shift toward a higher share of digital downloads, so it can’t be chalked up entirely to a PS5-specific slump. Some in the thread even questioned the premise itself — whether there was ever a time it was ‘strong’ — underscoring how tricky cross-generational comparisons make this debate.

※This article excerpts and summarizes the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Has PlayStation really gotten “weaker”?.”

  • Even With a Consumption Tax Cut, Rising Prices Could Cost Households ¥60,000–70,000 More: 5ch Says ‘Not Cutting Might Be the Bigger Loss’

A widely reported estimate claims that even if the consumption tax is cut, a 3% rise in prices would increase overall household spending by ¥60,000–70,000, resulting in a net “loss” — sparking debate on 5ch’s News Express+ board. The original article took a cautious stance on tax cuts, citing concerns about worsening fiscal health and an accelerating weak yen, but commenters on the thread pushed back repeatedly, arguing that not cutting the tax would make the burden even heavier. The discussion spread from the tax rate itself to broader price-control measures, touching on rampant “tax-cut-excuse” price hikes, fears of a rebound in prices once the two-year temporary measure ends, and the merits of alternatives like wage increases or a refundable tax credit.

Tax cuts worsen the nation’s fiscal health, directly undermining confidence in the Japanese government. If that confidence wavers, foreign investors will sell off the yen, further accelerating its depreciation.

So the idiots who agree with this are fine with keeping the consumption tax as is AND having prices rise 3%?

Background and Key Points of Debate

The estimate that “even with a tax cut, rising prices cancel out the benefit, resulting in a loss” depends heavily on what you assume prices would do if the tax weren’t cut at all. The thread split over exactly that assumption: some saw the article’s “¥60,000–70,000 increase in spending” as proof the tax cut fails, while others argued the burden would have been even heavier without it. Other points raised included the fact that the tax cut is a time-limited measure likely to trigger a price rebound once it expires, mixed opinions on a proposed shift to a refundable tax credit, and the view that price hikes are happening regardless of the tax cut — all of which resist a simple loss-versus-gain calculation. It’s worth noting that the “¥60,000–70,000” figure in the article is only an estimate of the added burden from rising prices, not a final picture of the net effect on household finances once the tax cut’s relief is factored in.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (News Express+) thread “[Breaking] It’s been found that even if the consumption tax is cut, a 3% rise in prices would mean a ¥60,000–70,000 increase in household spending overall, resulting in a “loss”.”

  • NISA Investors Weigh Jumping to Individual Stocks — 5ch: “Don’t Sweat Fees the Size of a Rice Grain”

The thread kicks off with a NISA (Japan’s tax-free investing program) investor who puts ¥70,000 a month into a NASDAQ100 index fund but feels tempted, wondering if switching to individual stocks would grow their money faster. Some posters insist mutual fund management fees are negligibly small, while others counter that small amounts add up over time. Things heat up further when someone claims “every individual investor who made it to the ¥10 billion tier got there through individual stocks,” which draws immediate pushback that this is just survivorship bias. Specific picks like bank stocks and high-dividend names such as Toyota and Honda get floated too, and NISA posters end up split over whether sticking with index funds or taking a swing at individual stocks pays off better.

    Re: #136
So did you actually manage to buy up stocks during the Ueda Shock and the tariff shock?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

NISA (Nippon Individual Savings Account) is a new tax-exempt investment program launched in 2024 that exempts gains and dividends earned within an annual limit of up to ¥3.6 million and a lifetime limit of ¥18 million. That means arguing over taxes on gains realized inside the account misses the point — and some posters in the thread did call that out. Meanwhile, the claim that “every individual investor who reached the ¥10 billion tier got there through individual stocks,” offered as proof that “individual stocks are more profitable,” is a textbook case of survivorship bias: only the winners are visible, while the far larger number of people who tried the same approach and failed never show up in anyone’s tally. It’s also easy to overlook that mutual fund management fees, even at a modest annual rate of 0.05–0.2%, can compound into a meaningful difference over a long holding period, while individual stocks carry their own transaction-timing costs and different tax treatment. Whether to put NISA’s tax-free allowance toward higher-risk individual stocks or a stability-focused index fund ultimately comes down to each investor’s personal risk tolerance rather than anything inherent to the program itself — and that’s exactly where the thread’s disagreement came from.

  • Why Hasn’t M!LK Released a “Yozora no Mukou”-Caliber Ballad Classic? 5ch Weighs In

M!LK has scored TikTok hits with quirky, off-the-wall (“tonchiki”) songs like “Ii Jan,” but they’ve yet to land a massive hit with a classic-style ballad in the vein of “Yozora no Mukou” (Beyond the Night Sky) or “Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana” (Only Flower in the World). On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a comment warning that “at this rate they’ll end up a cringe-worthy group of middle-aged guys” sparked a debate over why the group hasn’t released a truly great ballad. The thread split between defenders arguing that “you can’t just produce a classic ballad overnight” and harsher voices insisting that “the entire Hello! Project family has never had a single great ballad,” with posters bringing up SMAP and AKB48 ballads for comparison.

Ballads? That's more Takahashi George's territory, isn't it (the boyfriend/husband of actress Sayuki Takagi, from the band Koburyu, known for the ballad "Hitori Zake").
    34AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:14
Ballads barely exist as a trend these days — they're just not popular anymore.
    35AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:15
Come to think of it, Hello! Project doesn't have a single great ballad across any of its groups.
What has this group even been doing for almost 30 years?
The only one I can even recall is "Kobushi no Hana," which borrowed from all over the place but wasn't blatant enough to call out, and was held together well by the arrangement.
Well, that was peak Hoshibe — his pseudo-music-theory arranging put to good use.

    42AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:24
The word "tonchiki" itself is old, but what actually made it a standard term was Hyadain using it on the TV show Kanjam.

I think TikTok-aimed songs and "tonchiki" songs are actually different things.
    53AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:31
    SMAP just had good songs.
Like Akimoto, Johnny's had all kinds of people write for them and only picked the good ones, so of course they ended up with a lot of good songs.
    55AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:34
    Re: #53
Nah, a lot of them were just no-name band musicians from Victor (the record label).

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Tonchiki song” is slang for tracks with outlandish lyrics or structures designed to catch on with TikTok users; one theory in the thread credits Hyadain with popularizing the term on the TV show Kanjam, but other posters pushed back, noting the concept goes back as far as “Nainai 16” and “Decameron Densetsu,” so the term’s actual origin remains unclear. M!LK has hit songs in the tonchiki vein, like “Ii Jan” and “Sukisugite Metsu,” but a more conventional song they released in summer 2024, “Ao no Oto,” never gained traction — which is the background behind the thread’s central question. Meanwhile, opinions on what counts as a “great ballad” vary from post to post: for instance, some argue that Shikao Suga’s self-cover of “Yozora no Mukou” is the definitive classic version, rather than SMAP’s original. The tally of Music Station appearances was brought up purely as a comparison with Johnny’s-affiliated groups, and should be read as just one popularity metric among many, not a definitive ranking.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Why doesn’t M!LK finally release a great ballad like “Yozora no Mukou” or “Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana”?“

  • Kaito Kozono’s Contract Terminated: 11 Teams Can’t Figure Out What Salary Wouldn’t Be Insulting

The Hiroshima Toyo Carp terminated the contract of infielder Kaito Kozono (this season’s salary: ¥150 million), and a 5ch thread picked up on a tricky question: teams considering signing him have no idea what salary to offer. Kozono himself denies allegations of ties to organized crime (so-called “anti-social forces”), and while the club hasn’t presented concrete evidence and he hasn’t even been referred to prosecutors, the team cited an inability to “build a relationship of trust” as grounds for the release. In the thread, opinions split over how serious a release over conduct issues really is, what a fair salary would look like, and how this compares to past players who ran into similar trouble.

This release was the kind where Hiroshima basically threw up their hands and gave up on him.
Getting cut for "can't build a relationship of trust"

    Re: #110
Both Hazuki and Kozono ending up like this — whoever called that had some serious foresight.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Kozono had been under contract this season at a salary of ¥150 million, but Hiroshima went ahead and terminated it, citing an inability to “build a relationship of trust.” He denies the allegations, the club hasn’t presented concrete evidence, and — as the thread itself points out — he hasn’t even been referred to prosecutors. In other words, “no referral, no indictment” doesn’t mean the allegations have been cleared; what the club prioritized wasn’t legal guilt but the breakdown of trust, a distinction readers can easily conflate. Where the thread split was over whether conduct problems get overwritten by on-field talent, or whether — as in past similar cases — they end up casting a long shadow. On the question of a fair salary, concrete figures like “around ¥50 million” came up, while others took a harsher view by citing the past pay-cut case of Norihiro Nakamura — all reflecting the fact that there’s no settled consensus on his market value.

  • Should ANGERME’s Rookie Nagano Be the Next Big Push? 5ch: ‘She Sold Out Both Sessions of Her Birthday Event Just 1 Year In’

A thread debated whether Hello! Project group ANGERME should start seriously pushing rookie member Nagano. With flagship members Maki Goto and Hirayama going through a prolonged rough patch health-wise, some say Nagano stands head and shoulders above the other young members, while skeptics countered that “she’s not really that cute,” splitting opinion on her looks. Citing the fact that she filled both sessions of the Asahi Hall birthday event about a year after joining, some argued her popularity is backed by real numbers, and the discussion expanded into comparisons with other young members like Murakoshi and Tamenaga.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

ANGERME is a Hello! Project group fronted by Maki Goto, and concerns over Goto’s and Hirayama’s health have repeatedly come up among fans over the past few years. Nagano, the member discussed in the thread, is a rookie who has been in the group for only about a year, and the fact that she filled both sessions of the Asahi Hall program at her birthday event is cited as proof that her popularity is “backed by real numbers.” At the same time, opinions on her looks are split right down the middle within the thread, with a recurring theme being the gap between impressions from photos alone versus impressions from seeing her live at concerts — the discussion wasn’t a simple looks debate but expanded to cover height, build, and how she comes across in performance. Nicknames like “Mocchi” and “King” are fan nicknames that have stuck to individual members, and comparisons with other members make more sense read in that context.</analysis>

  • New ‘Fire TV Stick 4K’ Debuts — 5ch Says ‘Forget That, Did They Fix the Freezing?’

On September 30, Amazon released a new streaming media player, the Fire TV Stick 4K. It’s priced at ¥11,980, and during the “Prime Thanksgiving” sale from October 16–19, it’ll be available for ¥5,980 — ¥6,000 off. Announced alongside it, the Fire TV remote control is slated for release on October 22, while the higher-end Fire TV Remote Plus isn’t due until 2027. On 5ch, rather than discussing the new features, commenters first zeroed in on complaints about past models, asking whether the freezing problem had finally been fixed. Opinion was further split over the new TV-USB-port charging method — some questioned its practicality since many TVs don’t have a free USB port to spare — while others asked what the point of a dedicated device even is when you can watch the same content on a phone or tablet.

On September 30, Amazon announced new additions to the Fire TV lineup: the Fire TV Stick 4K, the Fire TV remote control, and the Fire TV Remote Plus. The Fire TV Stick 4K went on sale September 30; the Fire TV remote control is scheduled for release on October 22 (pre-orders starting September 30); and the Fire TV Remote Plus is planned for release in 2027.

'What kind of conversations can you even have on 5ch?' — sounds exactly like something someone who's never touched 5ch would say.
So what would you say back to that?
    7AnonymousOct 1, 2026 20:25
They're bragging about how portable it is, but that just means Amazon knows exactly where you've taken it.
And that's not even counting your voice data, if you're not careful.

It's the most convenient way to get a TV online.
Then again, if it's just internet you want, you don't even need a TV — any monitor with HDMI will do.
But hotels and phones support casting these days anyway, so there's no real need to carry one of these around.

I watch Prime Video almost entirely on my tablet.
I barely touch my Fire TV, maybe once every six months.
And every single time I try to use it, the remote fails to pair — 100% of the time.
At this point I just unplug it and reset it before I even try.
    15AnonymousOct 1, 2026 21:24
Can you use this with a car navigation system?

All it does is let you watch the major streaming services on any monitor with an HDMI port — it has nothing to do with TVs specifically.

That really comes down to personal taste.

    Re: #29
I got handed an Amazon tablet someone wasn't using and tried to set it up — totally unusable. Google's own apps don't work on it. You have to start by unofficially sideloading the Google Play Store just to get anywhere. And even if it works on that version, there's no guarantee it survives the next update. The whole network-based ecosystem feels half-assed, worse than the hardware itself. Garbage in an instant. Get an Android tablet instead.
If you want cheap, the Xiaomi Redmi Pad 2 is the best option, quality included.
If you only ever use Amazon services, maybe it's fine, but that's about the extent of it. Apparently there's decent demand for these among kids in English-speaking markets, but kids' tablets live and die by content, and the Japanese-language content just isn't there.

Ads popping up during playback killed it for me — I stopped using it entirely.
I watch comfortably now on a tablet with an ad blocker installed.
If you're going to buy this, wouldn't you be better off just getting an Android TV and running an ad blocker on that?
Terrestrial broadcasts can be watched on TVer these days anyway.

Does this support WOWOW On Demand?

4K programming from the five BS commercial broadcasters now streaming free on WOWOW On Demand. A-PAB press conference: "A new era for BS 4K is about to begin."
    https://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/2144955.html

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Previously, the Fire TV Stick had to be powered via an AC adapter or USB cable, and the hassle of setting it up had been a recurring complaint. The new model switches to drawing power from the TV’s own USB port, touting adapter-free setup as a selling point — but since TV USB ports are often already occupied by things like recording HDDs, several commenters questioned how practical this really is. There’s also a history of the Fire TV Stick freezing during YouTube playback on past models, and the fact that commenters asked “did they fix the freezing?” before even discussing the new features speaks to just how much frustration existing users have built up. At the same time, with smartphones and tablets now able to stream the same services, some questioned what the point of a dedicated streaming device even is anymore, reopening debate over where the Fire TV Stick actually fits. Related news that came up in the same breath included the fact that Amazon hasn’t released a new Fire tablet model in some time, and the start of free 4K streaming on WOWOW On Demand.

  • Palantir CEO Secretly Bought 150km² of Swedish Forest — Local Hunters Found Out When Their Leases Got Cancelled

It has emerged that Palantir CEO Alex Karp secretly purchased roughly 37,000 acres (about 150 square kilometers, or 15,000 hectares) of forest in northern Sweden. Local residents reportedly only found out about the purchase when hunters lost the long-standing hunting lease they’d used on the land for years. On Lemmy’s Europe community, discussion exploded over the purchase price and what the land might be used for, with speculation ranging from rising Nordic land values due to climate change to the construction of a data center. Meanwhile, plenty of voices criticized large-scale foreign land ownership and the sheer scale of billionaire wealth itself.

As long as the rest of his assets keep earning, there's no need for this land to turn a profit anytime soon (correction: I had the exchange rate wrong — 1 krona is about $0.1, not $10)

stoly: Re: #20 There it is again, that argument: 'Leaving nature alone is bad for nature. Only humans can help it, and only by killing animals'

Background and key points of this discussion

This purchase isn’t unrelated to the nature of Palantir as a company. Known for AI-powered defense and intelligence work, Palantir is reportedly involved in military support for Ukraine, and some in the thread speculated about a connection to drone operations. Sweden has a traditional right called “Allemansrätten” (the ‘everyman’s right’), which lets anyone access and forage on private land, so large-scale private land ownership tends to create friction with this custom. Commenters also pointed out that Karp’s net worth reportedly exceeds $18 billion, making this purchase (roughly $24 million) only a small fraction of it. That said, it’s worth noting that the land’s specific intended use (a data center, a vacation home, or something else) remained pure speculation within the thread and is not a confirmed fact.
