Has the PS5 Really Gotten Weaker? 5ch Debates Shrinking Exclusives and Retail Space

The story

A thread titled “Has PlayStation really gotten ‘weaker’?” appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. It was sparked by the decline in exclusive titles, with posters citing this year’s PS first-party sales figures (Wolverine in the low 20,000s, etc.) and the shrinking shelf space and number of retailers carrying PlayStation products as evidence. Meanwhile, some pushed back, pointing to PS5 titles’ strong showing in Golden Joystick Awards nominations as proof the console’s presence remains solid, splitting opinion on how to interpret the drop in exclusives. Others noted that recent PS5 titles have grown homogeneous, leaning heavily into dark fantasy and soulslike genres — keeping the debate from boiling down to a simple “strong vs. weak” binary.

When people talk about PlayStation in 2026, certain words always come up.
"It's lost its momentum."
"It's not as exciting as it used to be."
8AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:43
With exclusives all but gone, that makes it a 'weak' console, doesn't it?

Re: #8
Keeping it short and clear is the basics of getting a message across.

This year's PlayStation first-party titles

Wolverine: 20,039 ←NEW
Saros: 4,614
Marvel Tōkon: 2,814
MLB The Show 26 (English version): 1,893
Marathon (down to triple-digit concurrent players, basically on its deathbed)

Re: #13
Judge the PlayStation that exists today by today's standards, and the result is a loser turned away by retailers, third parties, and users alike.
19AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:47
Instead of starting 'Narizo' threads, why not just write your long rants on your own blog or social media?
20AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:47
The PS2 sold because people wanted a DVD player, after all.

PS5 is doing great with exclusives and lead-platform titles, so what's the problem?

Re: #22
They used to brag about all the exclusives and third parties flocking to them, and now they're leaning on a vague thing like 'lead platform'? They really have gotten weaker.
23AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:49
Re: #13
The decline must really sting, lol. It's almost nice to see — a fading platform on its way out spreads FUD, it doesn't work, and they just end up looking more pathetic for it.
26AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:54
Once even self-proclaimed fans can't explain what's good about it in their own words anymore, it's over.
28AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:54
Was there ever actually a time it was strong to begin with?
48AnonymousOct 2, 2026 11:20
Re: #28
Probably up through the PS2, when the appeal was the rise of CDs/DVDs and how cheap they were. From the PS3 onward it was propped up by Blu-ray and graphics, with shaky footing the whole way.
29AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:54
Even if it were strong, no Japanese games come out and it's wall-to-wall Western games — who'd want that? Is 'strong' or 'weak' even the right question here?
30AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:54
If you're measuring strength against the past, the Switch 2 looks like it's gotten weaker too, so singling out the PS5 as having gotten weaker feels off.

That said, here's one thing that's certain right now: the PS6 has no bright future ahead of it. Unless it offers performance at or above the PS5 Pro while staying priced where ordinary people can actually afford it, it'll end up a losing console.
31AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:55
The moment you ignore the obvious comparison sitting right there, it's nothing but sophistry. Fabricating an opinion while ignoring just how far Nintendo has fallen has no value.
33AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:57
A true powerhouse never flaunts its strength 😉
34AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:58
PlayStation's current state in the domestic market is exactly the world they wished for. They did nothing, and this is the result of that wish — they should just accept it quietly.
35AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:58
It's not that it got weak — it just got found out. Flattering media, strong-arming retailers, locking down third parties, maneuvering so even multiplatform games feel PS-exclusive — then Jim Ryan admitted he didn't really get the Japanese market or Japanese games and redirected the budget, and that ripped the veil right off. It was all stagecraft, all smoke and mirrors.
36AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:58
Even without GTA5, Nintendo hardware caught up to five years' worth of domestic PS5 sales in just a few years. So whatever people say about GTA6, it's just a momentary gust of wind.

In the end, the idea that one single game can save a console is about as realistic as a maiden's prayer (i.e., pure wishful thinking).
37AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:59
Why are you still clinging to a console that's turned to garbage? Just toss it already —
you'll feel so much better.
40AnonymousOct 2, 2026 11:02
Isn't part of the problem that everything PS5 puts out is the same genre of 3D action, way too many soulslikes, dark fantasy settings, murky hard-to-see screens, and blood and gore — nothing but that?
51AnonymousOct 2, 2026 11:23
Re: #40
Seriously, this. They're mass-producing similar games at a level that recalls that era when Mystery Dungeon doujin games flooded everywhere, and people are starting to get sick of it.
41AnonymousOct 2, 2026 11:03
There's zero sign of organic word-of-mouth buzz. That's because everything up to now was arranged and staged by the company, going all the way back to the SCE days. Once that hand stopped moving, all that's left are the loud-mouths — scarecrows who are satisfied by a title announcement alone and just bask in their own sense of superiority.
45AnonymousOct 2, 2026 11:10
Nintendo being the weaker one is proven by the stock price.
52AnonymousOct 2, 2026 11:24
Re: #45
If stock price is supposed to tell you whether games actually sell… riiight, like Nintendo's games don't outsell Wolverine sixfold or anything (sarcasm).

Jim Rya◯: "Wonder why that is~" (playing dumb)
Swee◯t Bab◯: "Beats me~" (staring into the distance) (likely censored references to Jim Ryan and Sweet Baby Inc., a consulting firm controversial among gamers)
75AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:05
The clearest sign is that shelf space keeps shrinking and
fewer stores carry it at all. After all, you can't download-buy the console itself.
80AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:16
Re: #75
If you can just endure three more hardware generations — 6, 7, 8 — PS9, the kind you snort up your nose, will be something street dealers everywhere sell you (a joke likening a future console to contraband peddled on the street). Just gotta survive that long.
81AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:22
Just saying 'PlayStation is done for' gets the point across.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Behind the decline in PS5 “exclusive titles” lies a business decision Sony made starting around 2022 to lean into multiplatform releases and introduce the positioning of “lead platform titles.” This strategy brings major titles to PC as well to widen revenue opportunities, meaning a simple count of exclusives doesn’t fully capture the real picture. It’s also worth noting that a high number of Golden Joystick Awards nominations is a different axis from actual sales volume, and the figures cited in the thread (like Wolverine’s sales numbers) are self-reported tallies circulating on 5ch, not official sales data. The shrinking retail floor space is also tied to the market-wide shift toward a higher share of digital downloads, so it can’t be chalked up entirely to a PS5-specific slump. Some in the thread even questioned the premise itself — whether there was ever a time it was ‘strong’ — underscoring how tricky cross-generational comparisons make this debate.
