  • Spain Moves to Ban Evictions — Foreign Commenters Worry It Could Fuel ‘Squatting’

Protests erupted in Spain after an 87-year-old woman was evicted from her home, prompting the Spanish government to announce a ban on evictions. The backdrop: Spanish housing prices and rents have been climbing at a pace of nearly 10% a year, far outpacing wage growth. Following the news, discussion on overseas forums focused less on whether the eviction ban itself was a good idea and more on what’s driving the price surge — with criticism aimed at the lack of taxes on vacant homes and the system that turns real estate into a speculative asset. At the same time, many worried the ban could worsen Spain’s already troublesome squatting (“okupas”) problem, splitting commenters between supporters and the concerned.

It's just wrong that owning property purely to rent it out has become some kind of 'badge of success.' All it creates is a divided society — tenants scraping by paycheck to paycheck, and landlords constantly fretting over whether their investment will pay off.
    6Anonymous2026-10-01 07:34
Sure, it shouldn't be that way, but from what this article says, no better alternative solution is actually being offered.
    5Anonymous2026-10-01 09:55
There was a guy in my neighborhood who used to blast music from 4 to 7 in the morning. After months of complaints, he finally got evicted. If evictions were banned, he probably would've just gotten 'taken care of' some other way.
    7Anonymous2026-10-01 08:18
Spain's overall population probably isn't growing, but people are moving into popular areas where it's easier to find work or study.
    17Anonymous2026-10-01 08:52
The rich are the beginning and the end of this problem.
    21Anonymous2026-10-01 06:46
Housing prices and rent both climbing almost 10% a year is just insane… can someone explain why? The article just says there's a housing shortage, but what's actually causing it? Spain's population isn't even growing.
    27Anonymous2026-10-01 07:09
    Greed. That's it.
Cost of living is rising faster than wages. We're edging toward that late-stage-capitalism scenario people joke about — 'you'll own nothing and be happy.'
    8Anonymous2026-10-01 11:22
I think it's really great that so many people stood up for one person. Well done 🙌
    20Anonymous2026-10-01 13:42
Yeah, that's the kind of thing that happens when a society's roots aren't completely rotten. At least I want to believe that's the reason — though that might just be wishful thinking.
    10Anonymous2026-10-01 08:13
Just tax vacant units, with the tax increasing exponentially the longer they're left empty.
    12Anonymous2026-10-01 06:26
'How do we prevent the obvious abuse this would cause?'…
    Oh no, just imagine it.
Every house actually becomes a place where someone lives, and people stop handing their money over to rich folks who leave multiple homes empty for all but a few days a year.
    Truly a 'terrible' outcome.
    13Anonymous2026-10-01 07:30
Without any guarantee of a return on investment, nobody will invest in building housing anymore, and there'll end up being fewer livable homes, or worse-quality ones.
    29Anonymous2026-10-01 07:03
If evictions are banned, why would you need to worry about that? No evictions means you can't get kicked out of your own home… 🤷‍♀️
    15Anonymous2026-10-01 05:53
I wish this would happen in the US too.
    18Anonymous2026-10-01 15:10
Wasn't Spain already dealing with a problem of people squatting in other people's homes and refusing to leave?
    39Anonymous2026-10-01 18:23
Until someone shows actual numbers, I'm guessing that problem is just being overblown.
    23Anonymous2026-10-01 09:42
A Spanish friend of mine told me this has been going on for a while already.
Apparently if a foreigner buys a house or apartment to use as a vacation home, and someone breaks in and squats there while they're away, they can't be kicked out.
Can any Spaniards confirm if this is actually true?
    26Anonymous2026-10-01 13:13
That's true, but it's an extremely rare case that only gets attention because it sounds so outrageous. Most cases are simply people who, for whatever reason, became unable to pay rent. There are some who exploit the eviction ban and deliberately refuse to pay, but we don't know the proportion — I'd guess that's a minority too.
    31Anonymous2026-10-01 12:48
I don't know about Spain, but in France this is 100% true. It's actually even worse — if someone squats in your one and only home and you don't file a police report within 48 hours of the break-in, the squatter gets to stay.
    It's absolutely insane.
    24Anonymous2026-10-01 09:32
Turning housing — something that's supposed to be a basic necessity — into a speculative asset, then profiting even further off the rental market from a housing shortage they themselves caused? That's just karma.
    28Anonymous2026-10-01 07:13
Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. This law will surely go through rounds of amendments down the line too.
    30Anonymous2026-10-01 07:27
If there's a plan to prevent supply from collapsing, that amendment should be put forward at the same time.
    32Anonymous2026-10-01 07:02
Come visit the Czech Republic — Prague especially.
    33Anonymous2026-10-01 06:47
Somebody please think of the poor 'little guy' landlords too. All they did was buy a property first so nobody else could, and now they just sit back doing nothing while skimming money off other people's labor.
    35Anonymous2026-10-01 18:22
Oh yeah, totally. Their 'investment' just drains money from poor people's paychecks while crushing their chance to ever own a home. Super fair.
    36Anonymous2026-10-01 16:08
The idea that 'not everyone wants to own' is fine in theory, but even students would want their own place if they could afford it. Same goes for other groups — ideally, if it weren't so expensive, you'd buy, maintain it, and sell it for roughly the same price when you move.
    38Anonymous2026-10-01 15:05
    Whoa…
But isn't it illegal in the first place to not have the proper paperwork? At least for tax purposes.
I get that court cases take time, but I'm curious how this actually works legally.
Does the same thing happen with cars too?
    40Anonymous2026-10-01 18:55
I saw this covered on TV. Apparently there are now specialized companies that remove squatters for you. If that's become an actual business, it must be a pretty big problem for people in Spain.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Spain is one of the Southern European countries where housing prices and rents have risen especially sharply, and the nearly 10%-a-year pace mentioned in the thread far outstrips wage growth. The thread repeatedly brought up the issue of “squatting” (okupas), but that’s actually a separate legal matter from this eviction ban — in Spain and France, if you don’t report a break-in within 48 hours, it becomes difficult to remove the squatter, a legal treatment distinct from ordinary rental contracts. The eviction ban itself applies only to tenants who’ve become unable to pay rent, not to squatters — though commenters didn’t always draw a clear line between the two as the discussion unfolded. Points about the merits of holding housing as an investment asset and taxing vacant homes were also raised, but the discussion never got into concrete policy design, and it ended with opinions still divided.

  • Soapland Bribery Scandal: Ex-Todai Professor Demanded Brothel Treats — Then Paid Out of Pocket for a ‘2-Hour, ¥80,000’ Encore

A former University of Tokyo professor received entertainment at a soapland (a Japanese bathhouse-style brothel) in exchange for granting favors related to cosmetics business dealings, Daily Shincho reported on October 1. According to testimony from the businessman who bribed him, the professor procured erectile dysfunction medication from a pharmacy beforehand, insisted on showering before each session and on being the “first customer of the day” (kuchiake), and even held a post-session “kansōsen” — literally a shogi/go term for reviewing moves after a match, borrowed here mockingly — to discuss his impressions afterward. It also emerged that he paid out of pocket for an extra 2-hour, ¥80,000 session. On 5ch, the thread filled up with disbelief and mockery at the professor’s personal “creepiness,” questions about why the cosmetics industry would entertain a university professor in the first place, and tangents about the realities of Japan’s sex industry.

    Don't do it, man.
You'll just end up with some unattractive woman who's loose and smells bad down there,

    Background and Points of Discussion

This report is based on testimony from the businessman who paid the bribes, and it’s worth noting that neither the University of Tokyo nor the professor himself has confirmed or denied the allegations at this stage. As for why the industry entertains researchers in the first place, cosmetics companies want an academic “seal of approval” to boost consumer appeal, and that motivation tends to run stronger for products — like cosmetics — that are hard to back up with hard scientific evidence. While the thread was mostly about mocking the professor personally, it also touched on a tension between the “no problem if he’s spending his own money” self-responsibility argument and the question of how to judge the ethics of a researcher holding a public position. Note that “kansōsen” is a term from shogi and go, referring to reviewing one’s moves after a match — here it’s used mockingly to describe recapping the brothel experience. Readers should keep in mind this is based on one-sided testimony at the reporting stage.

  • FRUITS ZIPPER’s Runa Nakagawa Falls Ill Amid Spreading Backlash — 5ch: “There Was Never Any Bad Blood”

Runa Nakagawa of idol group FRUITS ZIPPER sat out part of a tour concert on September 25, then missed NHK’s “Nodo Jiman” broadcast on the 27th, citing poor health. It started when a video showing an apparent gap in reactions between members spread on social media, fueling speculation that the group wasn’t getting along. On 5ch, opinions split between those saying idols should keep their feelings off their faces as professionals, and those arguing the real problem was baseless pile-on criticism. Many posts also pushed back on the “bad blood” theory, citing exchanges from radio shows and live performances.

“Regarding Runa Nakagawa: due to poor health, she will not be appearing in tomorrow’s scheduled broadcast of ‘NHK Nodo Jiman.’”

This was the September 26 announcement from the official social media account of the seven-member idol group FRUITS ZIPPER, informing fans that member Runa Nakagawa would be sitting out the September 27 broadcast of “NHK Nodo Jiman.”

Nakagawa had also limited her participation in the September 25 concert tour performance due to poor health.

    14AnonymousOct 1, 2026 17:22
She's in her late 20s/30s, so there's probably a lot going on, but if a bit of online backlash is enough to knock her out, that's a seriously fragile mentality ("tofu mentality," as the saying goes).
Maybe there's also a backdrop where fans these days don't like it if members aren't shown being close.
    21AnonymousOct 1, 2026 17:25
    Re: #14
For idols and YouTubers alike, keeping up a "we're all best friends" image is part of the job.
Whatever the reality, you have to put out videos performing being close and perfectly in sync.
Musicians or bands that skip that kind of camaraderie act don't need the "best friends" routine.
But for an idol group, being close and having "worked hard together" is part of the product too, so acting it out is expected.

For that to work, the one doing the freezing-out would also have to come out and play along with the "we're friends" act — otherwise it's pointless.

No matter how hard some faction pushes this far-fetched "bad blood" narrative, you can't keep a lid on the truth.
Everyone ends up seeing the truth: there was never any bad blood at all.

Background and Key Points of This Story

FRUITS ZIPPER is a seven-member idol group that launched in 2022 as a TikTok-born project, and Runa Nakagawa is one of its members. The group’s official social media only cited “poor health” for her absence from “NHK Nodo Jiman,” and neither Nakagawa nor her management has explicitly confirmed any link to the online backlash. It’s worth noting that the “member being ignored” clip circulating online was only a few seconds long and lacked context, yet many posts jumped to conclusions about the members’ attitudes anyway. On the thread, opinions split with no common ground: some argued that performing a “we’re close friends” image is simply part of the idol business and its commercial value, while others felt personal feelings shouldn’t have to be managed or acted out at all. At the same time, many posts cited radio and live-show remarks to push back on the “bad blood” theory, so opinions varied depending on which source people trusted.

  • Nijo Castle to Charge Non-Residents Double — 5ch Reacts: “It Used to Be ¥500, Now You Want ¥2,000?”

The city of Kyoto has settled on a plan to introduce “dual pricing” at the UNESCO World Heritage site Nijo Castle as early as fiscal year 2027. Residents would get a discount while non-residents would pay more, with the price gap expected to reach double — a move aimed at funding the repair and preservation of cultural assets, given that the vast majority of visitors come from outside the city. On 5ch, opinions split between those who see it as fair (“residents already pay city taxes, so this makes sense”) and skeptics who call it “a backdoor price hike” or point out that “Himeji Castle once shelved a similar plan that would have split pricing by nationality” — debate centered on where to draw the line and how other castles have handled this before.

    Kyodo News

The city of Kyoto, which manages the UNESCO World Heritage site Nijo Castle (Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto City), has settled on a plan to introduce “dual pricing” for admission — charging residents and non-residents different rates — as early as fiscal year 2027, city officials revealed on the 1st. Residents would see a discount while non-residents would face a price hike, with the gap set to reach double. Since the vast majority of visitors come from outside the city, the plan aims to use the added revenue to help fund the repair and preservation of cultural assets.

Actually, Kyoto's on the low end for per-capita city tax among big cities.
It's ¥20,000-30,000 below the average for other cities with a million-plus population.
Part of that's because there are relatively more students, and corporate city tax revenue is low.

    Re: #180
The only time it looked rough was during COVID — otherwise Nijo Castle seems like it could basically run on admission fees alone.

Background and key points of this debate

Nijo Castle’s admission fee has been raised incrementally in recent years amid rising prices and climbing preservation and repair costs, and the current “dual pricing” proposal is an extension of that trend. The key point is that the price gap is drawn along “resident vs. non-resident” lines rather than nationality. Himeji City had previously considered a plan to raise fees only for foreign tourists, but shelved it after facing criticism — and Nijo Castle’s proposal appears to have been designed with that precedent in mind. The debate on the thread essentially boiled down to whether this distinction counts as “reasonable user-pays fairness” or “xenophobia in a more palatable disguise.” One point readers may easily miss is that “non-residents” also includes Japanese citizens living in other cities — a fact that drew pushback on the thread itself, with posters asking whether Japanese people were being shut out too. Meanwhile, whether Nijo Castle’s operating costs are actually covered mostly by admission revenue rather than taxes was never confirmed on the thread — it remains speculation.

  • New AI Tech “QSSR” Arrives on PS5 — 5ch Debates Whether the Image Quality Boost Is Even Real

On October 2, Sony announced “Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR),” an AI upscaling technology for the PS5. Until now, PSSR was exclusive to the PS5 Pro, but QSSR brings AI-powered image enhancement to the standard PS5 as well. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were the first titles to support it, via patches released the same day. On 5ch’s hardware board, opinions split between those who said the official comparison video showed “almost no difference” and those who praised the sharper edge definition, with the discussion also touching on comparisons to the Switch 2’s DLSS support and the technical details of how the processing actually works.

You're just forcing yourself to feel like you get it, aren't you?
Are you being serious right now?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

PSSR is an AI upscaler that debuted in fall 2024, exclusive to the PS5 Pro, using machine-learning-based inference to produce sharper output than traditional checkerboard rendering. QSSR is positioned as an adaptation of that same processing to run on the standard PS5, and as of this announcement, support is limited to the two titles that received the day-one patch. The thread split on a single point — whether the difference is actually visible in comparison images — a criticism that has come up repeatedly with AI upscaling announcements, since static screenshot comparisons often struggle to convey the real-world effect. It’s also worth noting that terms like “Nishi” and “buta” (pig) are standard rival nicknames for Nintendo fans used on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“geha”) board, part of the board’s usual back-and-forth rather than attacks on any specific individual.

  • New Anime ‘Shin Oishinbo’ Drops PV — 5ch Says the Art Doesn’t Match the Manga

A thread reporting the PV release for the anime “Shin Oishinbo” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The focus wasn’t on how the anime itself turned out, but squarely on how closely the character designs matched the original manga. Posters flooded in with image comparisons arguing that Yamaoka Shiro and Kurita Yuuko’s faces look different from the source material — if anything, closer to the manga’s later-era art style — and the discussion spread into comparisons with the old anime adaptation and the current trend of reviving other long-running manga.

There's always a good reason anime art ends up different from the manga.
Has there ever been an anime that succeeded by sticking close to the manga's art?
    93AnonymousOct 2, 2026 00:11
    Re: #84
That's because the manga isn't popular anymore anyway

    Background and key points

“Oishinbo” is a cooking manga written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki that has run since 1983, and it was previously adapted into a TV anime. What sparked discussion this time wasn’t the quality of the new PV itself, but specifically which era of the manga’s art the characters’ faces most resembled. In long-running manga, the art style often shifts over the years, so which period gets used as the reference point changes how the anime comes across. Commenters in the thread pointed out that even the previous anime adaptation had faces that differed from the manga, and the discussion extended to the broader, fairly common trend of anime rarely replicating a manga’s art style exactly. Meanwhile, claims that the animation work was outsourced overseas were not backed by any evidence and remain pure speculation.

  • Carp Cut Ties with Kozono and Teammates — His Attitude Right After Sparks Outrage, Giants and SoftBank Floated as Possible New Teams

On October 1, the Hiroshima Toyo Carp announced it would not renew contracts for next season with four players — Kaito Kozono, Masaya Yano, Shunsuke Tamura, and Seita Maekawa — who had been suspected of involvement in a scandal involving the designated drug etomidate (known as “zombie tobacco”). Kozono’s attitude during media interviews right after the release drew criticism online as “defiant,” and on the forum thread, teams like the Yomiuri Giants and SoftBank Hawks were floated as possible next destinations. At the same time, some called the move “a betrayal of the Carp,” while others brought up past cases involving Kazuhiro Kiyohara and Hotaka Yamakawa, debating whether signing him would be appropriate and how “tolerant” different teams are.

The verdict has finally come down. Kozono as Sakamoto's successor is way too on-the-nose for the Giants. I guess it'd technically solve their long-standing problem, but it'd be like taking on another Takahito Nomura.

Background and key points of this discussion

“Zombie tobacco” refers to e-cigarettes laced with the designated drug etomidate, so named because smoking it temporarily stiffens the body and induces a near-unconscious state. The substance is normally used as an anesthetic, and in recent years its abuse has spread among young people, becoming a social problem. In this case, four Hiroshima Carp players were suspected of involvement, and the team drew a line under the matter by declining to renew their contracts for next season — a “contract termination.” Unlike an NPB-wide ban or a suspension, contract termination doesn’t prevent other teams from signing the players as free agents under league rules, which is why names like the Giants and SoftBank — teams that tend to prioritize financial muscle and headline value — came up in the thread. What tends to get overlooked, though, is that the case could still be referred to prosecutors, meaning teams may not necessarily move quickly. Commenters also pointed to past cases involving Kazuhiro Kiyohara and Hotaka Yamakawa, noting there’s precedent for players quietly returning to the game after scandals blow over, making the lack of consistency in how pro baseball handles drug-related and other scandals a key point of debate.

At the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on the 1st, the women’s judo 70kg quarterfinal was held, and Rin Maeda defeated Tang Jing (China). Her opponent appears to have bitten Maeda’s judogi, leaving a clear bite mark near her left wrist. Tang Jing, disqualified for the foul, looked unconvinced by the call.

After Maeda took the fight to the ground, Tang Jing appears to have bitten the left sleeve of the judogi in an attempt to fend off the attack. The referee called a stop, and Maeda held up her left hand to the officials to point out the bite. The U-NEXT broadcast also showed the clear bite mark left near her left wrist.

    Background and Key Points

Biting has long been designated a strictly prohibited act in judo, resulting in immediate disqualification (with the opponent awarded the win) regardless of the technical score at the time — it’s handled separately from accumulated shido (minor penalties) and isn’t some special rule invented for this match. The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games are being held in Japan in fall 2026, and this bout took place during that tournament. In the thread, many posters drew comparisons to Mike Tyson’s ear-biting incident and footballer Luis Suárez’s biting history, drawing reactions from both combat-sports and football fans alike. No official explanation for what led to the bite has been given so far, so further details are still awaited. Note that some unfounded comments about nationality also appeared in the thread; those have been excluded from this article.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The NPB uniform player contract explicitly requires players to maintain “a character that serves as a model for the sport,” and the thread’s comment that “fighting this with a lawyer would be difficult under the contract” appears to reference this clause. There’s also said to be an unspoken agreement among all 12 NPB teams not to openly sign a player under drug suspicion, and many in the thread felt it would be genuinely difficult for Kozono to find a new team within Japan. Opinion was split on how to judge Kozono’s response — denying any illegal activity while still accepting his release — with some arguing “if you’re going to deny it, you should fight it to the end,” and others countering that “suspicion alone is enough to destroy a team’s trust.” It should be noted that, as of now, there have been no reports of criminal charges or indictment, and Kozono himself has consistently denied any involvement in illegal activity.

  • Ishiguro Ken warns jidaigeki could ‘die out’ — 5ch: ‘Period dramas are already finished’

Actor Ishiguro Ken has reportedly voiced concern that period dramas (jidaigeki) “might die out,” naming a period drama as a genre he’d still like to appear in. On the thread, many voiced sentiments like “No more Mito Komon, no more Abarenbo Shogun, no more Zenigata Heiji — period dramas are already finished,” while others pointed out that samurai and ninja motifs remain hugely popular worldwide through manga, anime, and games like Demon Slayer, Ghost of Tsushima, and Kingdom. Opinions split over the causes of the decline, including production costs, set budgets, young actors’ acting skills, and an aging viewership.

    >Actor Ishiguro Ken

Wait, actor? He's a TV personality, isn't he?
What's this guy's signature role anyway?

    That's plenty, isn't it

Just put it on a streaming service with subtitles and release it worldwide
    It'd blow up huge overseas
Could especially hook a ton of older viewers abroad
No idea why nobody's doing it

Funny you say that — they actually made a serious period drama movie and it flopped

'Together with Oda' (a parody title)
Or how about a sequel to 'Look Back and There He Is'?

Watching recent jidaigeki on BS, don't the overacting, no-name theater-troupe actors feel kind of unnatural?
Then again, taiga dramas cast with TV personalities are terrible too

Guess they didn't call him up for it

Period dramas on BS commercial channels are rough
I think NHK's still trying its best though

Period dramas are basically a kind of fantasy genre
It'd be sad to see the whole genre just vanish

Period dramas actually get made pretty often as films, including plenty of serious, proper ones — and they're good
It's landing an actual hit that's tough though
These days the closest might be that comedy, 'Samurai Time Slipper'?

Manga, anime, and games keep churning out period pieces, so

Japanese period dramas got saddled with the image of being something only old people watch, and that was the mistake.
They should cast younger actors as leads and make lighter, breezier dramas instead.
    Like China or Korea do.

Baby boomers are so flashy/youthful-minded they've convinced themselves they're not old enough to be watching period dramas, and as a result the culture's dying out

But come on, Aibou, 'Woman of the Forensics Lab,' and Doctor X are basically the modern-day Abarenbo Shogun and Ooka Echizen anyway
    71AnonymousOct 2, 2026 02:15
If sets and costumes cost too much, why not just set the period drama in the present day

    Re: #71
Haha, 'Hangman' — now that's a blast from the past

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Period dramas (jidaigeki) have long been flagship programming for NHK and Japan’s commercial networks, but in recent years long-running series like Mito Komon and Abarenbo Shogun have ended one after another, and even the productions continuing on BS satellite channels have been scaled back. Behind the thread’s complaints of “overacting” and “shallow performances” is the fact that art-department costs for sets, armor, and kimono remain high, even as the pool of actors skilled in swordplay and period mannerisms has thinned out. At the same time, as Demon Slayer, Ghost of Tsushima, and Kingdom show, demand for works built around samurai and warlord motifs remains alive and well both in Japan and abroad — suggesting the real problem may not be “period drama as a subject” but rather that “television period drama as a production format” has become locked into a high-cost, older-skewing model. The thread also drew a contrast with Chinese and Korean period dramas, which tend to favor younger leads and lighter, breezier productions.
