  • Nagoya’s “stand on both sides” escalator habit sparks reaction — 5ch: “It’s like ants caught in a death spiral”

A video posted on X showing passengers packed onto both sides of an escalator at Nagoya Station went viral on 5ch’s “Live News G” (Nandemo Jikkyou G) board. Apparently Nagoya even has a system where a buzzer sounds if it detects someone walking, and the video showed just how thoroughly the “stand on both sides” rule is enforced there — in contrast to Tokyo and Osaka, where the custom of leaving one side clear for walkers is deeply entrenched, sometimes producing lines dozens of meters long as people wait to pass. Saitama Prefecture was the first in Japan to encourage standing on both sides via an ordinance, but commenters noted it has had little real effect.

    54AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:37
    Re: #52
Yeah, but it has no penalties, so it's meaningless

    Background and points of debate

The custom of leaving one side of the escalator open for walking is said to have spread through the Kanto and Kansai regions starting around the 1980s–90s, but escalator manufacturers have long urged riders to stand still on both sides, citing the risk of falls while walking. In 2021, Saitama Prefecture became the first in Japan to enact an ordinance requiring people not to walk on escalators, but it carries no penalties, and commenters on the thread pointed out its lack of real effect, saying “nobody bothered enforcing it, so it was pointless.” Even though Nagoya’s both-sides standing appears thoroughly established, as shown in the video, this seems to owe more to on-the-ground measures — like audio warnings from the station — than to any ordinance. Opinions in the thread were split between those praising the both-sides habit as a sign of “high public manners” and those defending the one-side-open custom as reasonable for people in a hurry. The discussion also veered into statistics about driving manners in Aichi Prefecture at one point, but since that’s unrelated to escalator use and included some weakly supported claims, it has not been included in this article.

  • 5ch Users Debate Anime and Manga Characters’ ‘Intelligence Rankings’

On 5ch’s Nanademo Jikkyo G board, a thread went up featuring a homemade ranking of anime and manga characters by “intelligence.” Tier 4 (ranks 76-100) was defined as “localized tactics and narrowly specialized expertise,” Tier 3 (ranks 51-75) as “situational dominance and clutch performance,” and Tier 2 (ranks 26-50) as “world-class big-picture thinking and refined specialized reasoning,” with characters like Dr. Gero, Piccolo, Sōsuke Aizen, Osamu Dazai, Meruem, and Shogo Makishima making the list. Debate broke out over how fair the rankings were, including a reply pushing back on Dr. Gero’s placement by pointing to Bulma’s inventions, with opinions split on how to judge each character’s intelligence.

    Background and Talking Points

This kind of “stat debate” is one of 5ch’s long-running genres. Unlike a plain strength argument, it stands out for trying to put hard-to-measure qualities like intelligence and strategic thinking into words using an original tier system. This poster, too, set up deduction criteria like “schemes that collapse under an ability-removed test” and “excessive after-the-fact reveals,” building the ranking with a pseudo-academic structure. That said, this excerpt only covers Tier 4 through Tier 2 (ranks 100 to 39) and doesn’t include the top 25, so it’s easy to mistakenly assume characters like Osamu Dazai and Meruem “didn’t make the top tier” — they simply aren’t shown here. It’s also worth keeping in mind that a ranking like this rests entirely on one person’s subjective criteria, and since there’s plenty of room to interpret a character’s canon settings and feats differently, it’s not unusual for the criteria themselves to be questioned, as with the pushback over Dr. Gero’s ranking.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyo G) thread “All-Time Fictional Intelligence Rankings.”

  • Is It Pathetic to Live in a Tiny Studio “At Your Age”? 5channers Debate Housing—The Real Issue Is Cleaning Effort, Not Square Footage

A thread on 5ch’s Nanidemo Jikkyo G board asked whether it’s pathetic to be living in a 1K or studio apartment “at your age.” While some posters pushed back, arguing that “being single is the pathetic part—living in a 1K is still better than being a parasite still living with your parents (a ‘kodo-oji,’ slang for an adult man still mooching off his parents),” the discussion soon turned into an exchange of concrete housing details: a dilemma over choosing between a 1K at ¥30,000 and a 2K at ¥32,000 rent, a report of living in a 25-tatami-mat studio, and worries about eviction risk from a future rebuild while paying just ¥20,000 for a 1K. The view that cleaning effort matters more than room size also gained support.

For reference, here's what ChatGPT said:

At Columbia University's undergraduate programs (the College, etc.), there's no system like Japanese universities have for announcing results by exam ranking (1st place, top of the class). American college admissions (holistic admissions) decide acceptance by comprehensively reviewing high school GPA, standardized test scores (or test-optional), essays, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and more.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mocking “1K/studio apartment living” is a perennial topic on 5ch, and this thread was no exception, turning into a debate less about square footage and more about life stage and values—comparisons with living at home with one’s parents (kodo-oji), and judgments about being single itself. A notable feature was the number of concrete, practical exchanges: a real dilemma over choosing between a 1K and a 2K in the ¥30,000 range (reply #25), a report of living in a 25-tatami-mat studio, and warnings about the risk of eviction for a rebuild when paying just ¥20,000 rent for a 1K. Opinions in the thread split along two main lines—”judge by cleaning effort rather than room size” versus “what matters most is being financially independent”—suggesting that a small room doesn’t automatically equal a pathetic life. Note that the boasts about family wealth and the story about admission to an overseas university that appear partway through the thread are exaggerations/jokes and shouldn’t be taken as fact.

  • Is the harsh criticism of ‘GQuuuuuuX’ fair? 5ch splits down the middle

A thread titled “Was it really bad enough to get this much hate?” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board over Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Some posters praised the return of Amuro and Char, while others pointed to the abruptness of heroine Machu’s emotional arc, questioned the point of setting the story in a parallel world, and argued that the late-game “high-stakes mobile suit battle” arc was unnecessary. A few defended the show by citing rising overseas Gunpla sales, sparking a broader debate over how to separate a work’s quality from its commercial success.

Also, apparently Mercury wanted to lean even harder into the yuri stuff, so now there's a real-life school-life spinoff…

    Background and points of debate

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is a 2025 entry in the Universal Century Gundam franchise directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki. Set in a parallel world following the events of Char’s Counterattack, it brings back original-series characters like Amuro and Char. In the thread, opinion split between critics who, comparing it to Witch from Mercury and Iron-Blooded Orphans, argued that the director’s and writers’ personal styles were too heavy-handed, and defenders who simply enjoyed the hype of seeing Amuro and Char return. The sharpest disagreement centered on heroine Machu’s emotional portrayal and whether the second-half “high-stakes mobile suit battle” arc was necessary. Some also pointed to rising overseas Gunpla sales as evidence the show was a “success,” though others pushed back on whether that has any bearing on the show’s actual quality — worth noting the discussion drifted somewhat off-topic at points.

  • Why Are ‘Naro-Style’ Isekai Reincarnation Stories So Formulaic? 5ch Weighs In

A discussion on 5ch about “isekai” (parallel-world reincarnation) stories known as “naro-kei” — named after the novel-posting site “Shosetsuka ni Naro” that spawned the genre — kicked off with a post noting that “there are basically only four plot patterns, yet over 1,000 titles use them.” Commenters pointed to the constant recycling of stories where the hero gets an overpowered “cheat skill” and dominates everyone, or the “just you wait” (zamaa) revenge arc where a noble family or party kicks the hero out only to regret it later. Others criticized the poor writing quality of the source novels and suggested the character templates are lifted wholesale from RPGs or Tolkien’s works. Opinion split between those who blame lazy, mass-produced writing on the creators and those who argue it’s simply supply meeting demand.

    1AnonymousSep 16, 2026 11:36
Why are there only like four patterns?
・Die, get reincarnated, receive a cheat skill, become OP

Honestly it'd be funnier if a regular creepy otaku just went back to being a kid and became an elite or a "paripi" (a trendy, sociable party-going type)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Naro-kei” is a nickname for the body of work originating from the posting site “Shosetsuka ni Naro” (“Let’s Become a Novelist”). Since the 2010s, publishers like KADOKAWA have replicated whatever formula sells, causing a rapid surge in template-driven titles. In the thread, an explanation leaning toward personal attack — “it’s because the creators are creepy otaku” — clashes with a market-based explanation — “they’re mass-produced because they sell” — and the latter is closer to reality. Because Naro turns amateur online submissions into published books, the wide variance in the source novels’ writing quality is also a trait rarely seen in other genres. It’s worth noting that having “few patterns” is a phenomenon shared by other genres like sci-fi too, so it’s a common misconception to treat it as a flaw unique to naro-kei.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hello! Project trainees are typically promoted to full member status after passing skills assessment tests, but in recent years not everyone makes the cut — as one poster in the thread put it, “the era of promoting everyone is over.” For the two trainees discussed here, fans cited concrete circumstances — an opening left by a senior member’s graduation, and matching age/hometown patterns with existing members — as grounds for naming candidate groups, making this more than idle wishful thinking, since it’s grounded in actual open slots. That said, none of these comments come from the trainees themselves or from an official Hello! Project announcement — they remain fan speculation. Opinions in the thread are split over whether ANGERME, Juice=Juice, or Tsubaki Factory is most likely, so this should not be taken as a settled fact.

Mala tang (麻辣湯), a Chinese-style soup dish, has drawn growing buzz in recent years thanks to a push from social media and restaurants — but the customers who actually frequent these shops skew heavily female, with men reportedly lukewarm on it at best. On a 5ch thread, all kinds of theories flew back and forth about this “popularity gap.” Some pointed to differences in how receptive people are to advertising, others noted the trend was kicked off by its popularity among K-pop idols, and still others simply said the flavor doesn’t suit their taste — opinions never converged on one answer.

No need to get so mad about it

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Mala tang is a soup dish that originated in China, and in Japan it first spread mainly among young women starting in the 2020s, driven by marketing built around its visual impact and framed as “medicinal” and “good for your skin.” In the thread, some pointed out that the spark behind the trend was its popularity among K-pop idols, which appears to be one reason it picked up an image as a “boom for women.” At the same time, comments about the taste itself — like “it’s under-salted” or “there’s nothing novel about it” — suggest differences in flavor preference, not just how the marketing reached people, were also cited as a factor. As seen in the mix-up with the similarly named suan-la-tang (hot and sour soup), there also seems to be a sense that the dish itself still isn’t fully recognized.

  • Morning Musume.’26’s Sakurai Rio to Co-Host New NHK Show, Team Up with Oginoyagi’s Yahagi — 5ch: ‘Such a Sudden Offer’

Morning Musume.’26’s Sakurai Rio will co-host NHK General TV’s special “Nippon Fukinikui Biru Meikan” (“Japan’s Hard-to-Clean Buildings Directory”), airing September 21, alongside Oginoyagi’s Yahagi Ken, according to the TV listings. The slot normally airs the drama “Butterfly Effect,” and it’s unclear whether this is a one-off or could become a regular series. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, some tied the timing to rumors that Juice=Juice got cut from the Kohaku Uta Gassen (NHK’s New Year’s Eve song contest), speculating that “NHK may be shifting to favor Morning Musume.” Others pushed back, noting “you can’t expect good ratings from this,” leaving opinion split.

Nippon Fukinikui Biru Meikan — Shinjuku, Cocoon Tower 🈑

Japan is dotted with bold, distinctive buildings — but boy, do their windows look like a nightmare to clean. This daring show explores building appeal from a window-washer’s point of view. This time: that building that’s practically the symbol of West Shinjuku.

It's compensation for the snubbed agency

    Background and Talking Points

“Nippon Fukinikui Biru Meikan” is an occasional NHK General TV series centered on architecture, and this broadcast slot is filling in for the regular drama “Butterfly Effect.” One caveat worth noting: the claim circulating in the thread that “Juice=Juice was cut from the Kohaku Uta Gassen” had not been officially announced by NHK as of September 16 — it remains fan speculation for now. TV appearance opportunities within Hello! Project swing significantly from year to year, so tying a single one-off special to any lasting shift in treatment may be premature. That said, the relative scarcity of terrestrial TV exposure under the Morning Musume.’26 name has been noted before, and whether this casting translates into more group-wide exposure will depend on the show’s future track record.

  • Why Is Deep Impact Still Called Japan’s Strongest Racehorse? 5ch: ‘Can’t Touch Oguri Cap’s Popularity’

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board asked why Deep Impact, the 2005 Triple Crown winner, is still talked about today as Japan’s strongest racehorse ever. Posters argued that it’s not just his racing record — his legacy as a sire, producing heavyweights like Contrail and Gran Alegria, puts him in a class of his own — while others pointed to Orfevre’s runner-up finish at the Arc de Triomphe as proof of real strength abroad. The discussion widened into the history of racehorse popularity, with the sheer mania around Oguri Cap, once dubbed a full-blown social phenomenon, being cited as even bigger than the Deep Impact boom.

    1AnonymousSep 16, 2026 06:16
    It's a mystery, honestly.
Be real, Orfevre was probably faster.
    2AnonymousSep 16, 2026 06:18
He was the most popular horse at the absolute peak of the horse-racing boom, so maybe that's why he gets mythologized and treated as a legend.
    88AnonymousSep 16, 2026 07:29
    Re: #2
There wasn't even a horse-racing boom in Deep Impact's era.
If anything, sales were in bad shape, so JRA overexposed him in the media trying to manufacture popularity.
On top of that he was rock-solid and won in a memorable way, so of course casual fans loved him.

Orfevre, meanwhile, came up when the whole country was consumed by the [2011] earthquake and had no bandwidth to care, plus his record was shaky with a lot of losses — no wonder he never won over casual fans.
    3AnonymousSep 16, 2026 06:19

If you're using warlords as the comparison, Oguri Cap's popularity was Oda Nobunaga level [Japan's most famous unifier-warlord].
That's how far ahead of everyone else he was.
It was completely normal to see high school girls carrying Oguri Cap plush keychains.
He reached people who otherwise never watched or cared about horse racing at all.
And this was in an era with nothing like the game Uma Musume to hook young people in, so it really was an abnormal level of popularity.
    53AnonymousSep 16, 2026 06:52
    Re: #45
They say if Oguri Cap hadn't existed, things like horse plush toys, printing horse names on betting slips, and horse-racing video games either wouldn't exist at all, or would've shown up much later and stayed a niche thing — and racing itself would've kept its old shady, disreputable image.

I wouldn't call him the strongest ever.
His raw stamina is probably the best of all time, though.
But he folds under pressure in a duel and probably struggles getting boxed in — like he's missing that last reserve of grit.
In a race where every single entrant was a greatest-ever candidate, I think he'd lose.
    48AnonymousSep 16, 2026 06:46
    Re: #40
There are different kinds of stamina too, you know.
There's the type that grinds rivals down in a head-to-head battle, the type that sets a pace up front that breaks everyone else, and the type that can sustain one long final drive.
If the read on him is 'folds under pressure,' doesn't that clash with calling his stamina enormous?

    58AnonymousSep 16, 2026 06:56
    Re: #48
Same deal as Equinox's Takarazuka Kinen — Deep Impact's stamina was so absurd that he could avoid the pack, swing wide around the outside with room to spare, and still win.
But if the other 17 horses were also all-time-great candidates, he probably couldn't pull that off and still win.
Actually, that same weakness is what showed when Heart's Cry caught him off guard.
    73AnonymousSep 16, 2026 07:11
    Re: #58
Well, look at how Tap Dance City [a famous front-runner known for wire-to-wire wins] used to lead — for that kind of near-the-front, wire-to-wire pattern, a pure closer like Deep Impact often can't get there in time at a track like Nakayama.
If you gather up the greatest-ever class, that's exactly what happens against greatest-ever rivals.
There's no room for a leisurely wide sweep on the outside, so good course selection becomes an even bigger advantage.
    61AnonymousSep 16, 2026 06:58
Well, there's also a lot of faith in Deep Impact within the breeding industry.
Though personally I think Orfevre, with his Arc runner-up finish, was actually the stronger horse.

    80AnonymousSep 16, 2026 07:22
    Re: #74
Honestly, there's no one clean reason that explains a boom like that.
Same with something like Demon Slayer — nobody can really explain why it sold as much as it did either.
It's not simply that something's good, so it sells big.
You can point to vague factors — the anime's animation being amazing, or it lining up with the COVID era — but nothing you can say for certain.

If I had to guess, Oguri Cap's era was the bubble economy, so the whole country had money to spend but there was way less entertainment around than today — so Oguri Cap just happened to land at the right moment.
    77AnonymousSep 16, 2026 07:18

A big wire-to-wire runaway or a dramatic charge from the back is what's easiest to understand and get hyped about.
The classic front-running type that just grinds out a win no matter the situation is more reliably strong, but yeah, it's admittedly harder to appreciate.
    78AnonymousSep 16, 2026 07:18

    102AnonymousSep 16, 2026 07:44
    Re: #101
True, he was the first to do that at the Arc de Triomphe.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Deep Impact swept an unbeaten Triple Crown in 2005 (the Satsuki Sho, Japanese Derby, and Kikuka Sho), then went on as a sire to produce a string of Grade 1 winners including Contrail, Gran Alegria, and Gentildonna, posting one of the greatest sire records in Japanese racing history. Where the thread split was over whether a racehorse’s “greatest ever” status should be judged purely by racing results, or should also weigh its lasting genetic influence as a sire. Finishing times can’t be simply compared across generations because of track-condition factors like unusually fast surfaces, so it’s a common misconception that records alone can settle who was better. Oguri Cap, brought up as the most popular horse in history, is discussed on a different axis — mass popular appeal — separate from the debate over sheer strength.

  • Woman’s Post Says She’s ‘Disgusted by Men Who Endured Hardship to Save $1M’ Sparks Fierce Debate

A woman’s opinion posted on X (formerly Twitter) — that she feels disgust toward men who endured self-denial to build up ¥100 million in assets, since marrying one would likely mean being dragged into that same self-denial herself — was picked up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board (aka “Live Galileo”). The poster also argued that if a man’s only goal is to be popular with women, there’s really little need for him to save through self-denial in the first place. Reactions on the thread were split: some agreed, calling it “a fair point,” while many others pushed back, arguing that assets built through self-denial are exactly what have real value. Others pointed out that the whole debate actually originated from an anecdote about a man who had FIRE’d with ¥100 million and was introduced through a matchmaking service — broadening the discussion into questions about wealth-building and views on marriage.

Women don’t want to “endure” things, you know.

That’s exactly why I feel disgusted by guys who built ¥100 million through “endurance” — if I married one, I’d probably get dragged into that same endurance too.

If all you care about is being popular with women, there’s really not much need to endure hardship to build ¥100 million.

A NEET (someone Not in Education, Employment, or Training) who just sat on savings to hit ¥100 million? Yeah, that genuinely has no value.

The whole point of wanting money is so you DON'T have to endure stuff, lol.
    10AnonymousSep 16, 2026 06:09
Isn't the point of building wealth so you don't have to make anyone endure anything?

She's not "representing" matchmakers — she's from a matchmaking agency. Apparently the idea is: help this ¥100 million FIRE guy living off dividends find a woman willing to endure things for the rest of her life, for the sake of his marriage prospects.

Traced back why she even brought this up, and turns out she's basically begging for money herself lol

You don't have any friends, do you? Your ID's glowing red from posting nonstop, and nobody's even replying to you. (On 5ch, a heavily-used ID gets flagged/highlighted, marking someone as posting obsessively.)

It's insane that a guy who can save ¥100 million loses out to some guy blowing ¥200,000 on a woman. However you slice it, the former clearly has more on the ball.

Nobody actually builds ¥100 million purely through self-denial to begin with. There are 1.65 million households in Japan sitting on ¥100 million or more in financial assets — sure, they might've endured a bit scraping together the initial seed money, but after that it just snowballed on its own.

I think plenty of women would. The media seems to love mocking him, but he's probably just inconvenient for somebody's narrative.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

As becomes clear toward the end of the thread, this post appears to have been sparked by a case introduced by a matchmaking agency: a man who built ¥100 million in assets and FIRE’d was reportedly looking for a woman willing to endure a lifetime of self-denial alongside him. So the real debate wasn’t about high-income men in general — it was about the lifestyle of continually scaling back one’s standard of living in order to build wealth. Opinions on the thread split into two camps: those arguing that money saved through self-denial is unlikely to ever be spent on anyone else, and those countering that assets built through self-denial are precisely what makes them solid and trustworthy. No consensus emerged. Some also noted that 1.65 million households in Japan hold over ¥100 million in financial assets, suggesting the outcome isn’t necessarily the product of extreme self-denial alone. Worth keeping in mind: reading this purely as “disgust toward rich men,” without knowing the backstory, tends to miss the actual point of the debate.
