  • Japan’s Centenarians Top 100,000 for the First Time, 56th Straight Record High

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced on September 15 that the number of people aged 100 or older nationwide has reached 107,677 (up 7,914 from the previous year), topping 100,000 for the first time since record-keeping began in 1963. It’s the 56th consecutive year the figure has hit a new high, with women making up nearly 90 percent of the total. The announcement is an annual fixture ahead of Respect for the Aged Day, but reactions on 5ch split between posters celebrating the longevity trend and others worried about the growing strain on pensions and healthcare costs. Some commenters noted that people born in the Edo period were still alive into the 1960s, while others brought up the once-famous centenarian twins “Kin-san and Gin-san.”

It was learned on the 15th that the number of people aged 100 or older nationwide stood at 107,677 as of the first of this month (up 7,914 from the previous year) — the first time the figure has topped 100,000 since the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare began compiling the data. It marked the 56th straight year the record has been broken. Women accounted for 94,298, or nearly 90 percent of the total, while men numbered 13,379.

The ministry compiles these figures every year ahead of Respect for the Aged Day (the 21st). The number of centenarians has kept climbing, driven by advances in medical care and rising health awareness. There were just 153 in 1963, when record-keeping began, but the figure passed 50,000 in 2012 and has continued to grow since.

According to the ministry, the oldest person in the country is Fuyo Kishimoto, 114, of Kyoto, who reportedly looks forward to meals with fellow residents at her care facility and finishes every dish served to her. The oldest man is Hikaru Kato, 112, of Kumamoto, who stays healthy with exercise sessions at his nursing home.

    Re: #104
It really is an aging society, huh…

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This announcement is compiled annually by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare under the Act on Social Welfare for the Elderly, ahead of Respect for the Aged Day each September. The figure has climbed steadily since record-keeping began in 1963 with just 153 people, passing 50,000 in 2012 and now topping 100,000 in 2026. The nearly 90 percent share of women reflects the gap in average life expectancy between the sexes, and there are reported cases — like the two oldest, Kishimoto (114) and Kato (112) — of centenarians living independently at care facilities. Opinions on the thread were split between those who see longer lifespans as a positive and those who link it to worries about rising pension and healthcare costs and stagnant wages for the working generation, with no clear consensus reached. It’s also worth noting that the official “100 and older” count is based purely on resident registry records and says nothing about care needs or actual independence — an easy detail to overlook if you only glance at the headline number.

  • White of Left Eye Swells Up Puffy — 5ch: ‘Go to the Eye Doctor Right Now’

A post appeared on 5ch’s Everything Live (Nanidemo Jikkyo) board reporting that the white part of the poster’s left eye had puffed up a few millimeters into a squishy bulge. The poster attached photos to describe the symptom but kept insisting they couldn’t go to an eye doctor because of an upcoming night shift. Other users speculated it might be “conjunctival edema” and argued that if it were an infection it could worsen within hours, so the poster should see a doctor immediately — while others suggested it would likely clear up on its own if left alone. The thread split over whether work or a medical visit should come first.

    Re: #96
What did you do to end up like that?
I just vacuumed and rubbed my eye
    Can't think of anything else

    Background and Points of Debate

Eye symptoms are notoriously hard to gauge for how fast they might progress, and photos alone can’t tell you whether something will resolve on its own or rapidly worsen from infection. Conjunctival edema (swelling of the conjunctiva) is often triggered by rubbing or allergies and tends to clear up naturally in most cases, but the difficulty of judging severity from appearance alone is what fueled the confusion in this thread. Users split between the original poster, who wanted to settle things with photo diagnoses online, and those insisting an actual visit to an eye doctor was necessary. The poster’s decision to put off medical care because of work also raised a broader question in the background: whether prioritizing your job over your health is really the right call.

  • After being told to quiet her noisy kid, mom claps back: ‘Isn’t Saizeriya that kind of restaurant?’ — thread splits down the middle

When a fellow customer complained that her kids were being noisy at Saizeriya, a “mom-sama” (a sarcastic 5ch term, “ko-mochi-sama,” used to mock parents seen as entitled) shot back with “Isn’t Saizeriya that kind of restaurant?” — and the exchange blew up on 5ch. Even though it’s marketed as a family-friendly chain, opinions differ on just how much noise should be tolerated there, and the thread saw “badly-disciplined parents are the real problem” clash with “a bit of noise is just part of the deal.” The discussion spread beyond a simple kids-vs-adults fight, touching on the fact that Saizeriya doesn’t even have a kids’ menu, and on the manners of childless customers too.

    Background and points of contention

Saizeriya is known as a budget Italian chain that’s easy for parents with kids to use, but it has never officially billed itself as “kid-friendly,” so how people read that varies by customer. Where the thread split was over how much of a nuisance should be tolerated — some said it’s only natural to call out kids running around or throwing cups, while others felt a bit of noise was within acceptable range. Some also pointed out how uncomfortable it feels to see a disruptive kid relabeled as simply “energetic,” highlighting a temperature gap between parents and non-parents. The fact that Saizeriya doesn’t actually have a kids’ set menu also came up, adding to the mismatch between the chain’s real offerings and its “family-friendly” image.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Sad news] “Mom-sama”: “A fellow customer at Saizeriya told me my kid was being noisy, but isn’t Saizeriya that kind of restaurant?”.”

  • Should Tokyo Commuters Buy a 1LDK? 5ch Debates: “Buying Time Is Worth It”

A thread went up on 5ch about a woman — an office worker in Tokyo whom the poster met through a matchmaking app — who took out a mortgage and bought a 1LDK (one-bedroom plus living/dining/kitchen) condo in the city. Her reasons: she wanted to move out of her cramped apartment and finally own her own home. Reactions were largely positive, with comments like “If you can afford it, there’s no reason not to buy” and “Buying time is worth it,” but plenty of others voiced concerns about the future of Tokyo’s property market, rising mortgage rates, and the fact that single-occupant units are generally seen as poor investments. Posters who actually own real estate chipped in with concrete accounts of how their purchase prices compared to current valuations.

Which means, conversely, they're better value than renting

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Since the Bank of Japan ended its negative interest rate policy in March 2024, it has raised rates several times, putting upward pressure on the variable mortgage rates that had stayed low for so long. That’s the backdrop behind the thread’s worries about rising interest rates. Meanwhile, “buy vs. rent” is a perennial debate topic on 5ch, and this thread was no exception, splitting between posters sharing stories of rising property values and those urging caution, warning that “population decline will lead to an oversupply of housing.” One point that’s easy to miss just from the thread itself is that central Tokyo condo prices are also propped up by demand from single people and dual-income households, meaning they may move according to a different supply-and-demand structure than the nationwide population decline would suggest.

  • Hololive’s Pekora Teases Cryptic Stream — 5ch: “It’s the Rubber-Band Watermelon Thing”

Since she once streamed herself wrapping a watermelon in rubber bands and waiting for it to burst, plenty of 5ch users got excited with comments like “it’s that rubber-band thing again” and “the watermelon’s nice and chilled.” Meanwhile, true to the board’s freewheeling nature, the thread veered wildly off-topic into Pekora’s stamina, how deep the “NanJ” regulars’ Hololive knowledge runs, and comparisons to rival streamer “Hori Daisuke.”

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This teaser is nothing more than a single photo and caption posted by Pekora herself — the actual content of the stream has not been revealed. Because she has previously streamed a segment where she wraps a watermelon in rubber bands and waits for it to burst, thread speculation centered on a repeat of that bit. “Hori Daisuke,” who comes up repeatedly in the thread, is a streamer frequently referenced in 5ch’s streaming/VTuber threads, known for his extreme stunts, and here he’s brought up again as a comparison point for Pekora. It’s worth noting, though, that this is all speculation on 5ch’s part based on past patterns — whether the stream will actually turn out to be a watermelon segment had not been confirmed as of the thread’s posting.

  • “Tearjerker Songs” Aren’t Ballads: Hello! Project Fans Make the Case for Euphoric Pop

On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a thread kicked off with the post: “So-called ‘tearjerker songs’ aren’t damp, weepy ballads — they’re a lethal dose of euphoric pop.” Posters piled on with bright, upbeat tracks one after another: Juice=Juice’s “Magic of Love,” Morning Musume’s “Happy Daisakusen” and “Kurakura Climax,” Wink’s “Sugar Baby Love,” ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” and more. Some pushed back, though, arguing that “‘Magic of Love’ is about a woman who got played up and dumped, still hung up on him — that’s not ‘euphoric’ at all.” Opinions ended up split over how to read the songs.

Background and key points of this discussion

The word “euphoric” (多幸感), used heavily throughout the thread, originally describes the intense happiness brought on by drugs — as reply 5 pointed out — and it seems to have taken root among Hello! Project fans as roughly equivalent to the colloquial term “emo” (in the sense of “emotionally moving”). Judging by the song titles alone, plenty of upbeat, positive-sounding tracks came up, but as with Juice=Juice’s “Magic of Love,” some songs pair a bright melody with lyrics about lingering attachment or heartbreak — and the thread’s central idea was that this very gap between sound and lyrics is what actually makes a song “tearjerking.” The songs cited span generations and genres, from Morning Musume and Wink to ABBA and Mrs. GREEN APPLE, showing the conversation spread well beyond Hello! Project into music in general. That said, opinions stayed split on whether “Magic of Love” truly counts as “euphoric,” and no clear consensus was reached.

  • Streamer Hori, the ‘Short Sleeper,’ Pulled From Broadcast by Doctor’s Orders Over Suspected Stroke

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, a thread reported that streamer “Short Sleeper” Hori — who has publicly claimed to have lived almost sleep-free for 17 years — was ordered by a doctor to stop broadcasting over a suspected stroke (cerebral infarction). The thread mixed in reports that his cumulative Super Chat earnings stood at around 10 million yen as of the previous day, speculation that his appearance on the pitch show “Reiwa no Tora” may have triggered this, debate over the pros and cons of earning money by pushing his body to the limit, and questions about keeping up this lifestyle despite having a family. Some posters even shared medical information linking sleep deprivation to stroke risk, showing the reaction went beyond simple mockery.

The risk of cerebral infarction (stroke) rises as people reach middle age and beyond. There's actually a surprising link to sleep disorders.

It's become clear that sleep deprivation raises stroke risk. What's more, 'sleep debt' — the gradual buildup of sleep deprivation you might not even notice — is also a factor that increases stroke risk.

She's probably too scared of setting him off to say anything.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Medical experts note that sleep deprivation raises the risk of vascular events like stroke, with chronic short sleep believed to contribute to the risk through added strain on blood pressure and blood vessels. A “doctor’s stop order” refers to a doctor instructing someone to rest or halt an activity — language indicating this had moved past the point where it could continue by willpower alone. Opinions in the thread split over whether the motive for continuing to stream despite worsening health was revenue from Super Chats and the like; posters debated the true scale of the earnings, though there’s no way to verify the actual figures beyond what Hori himself has disclosed. Some in the thread also questioned the consistency between his claim of “17 years of this same daily routine” and the fact that health problems are only now surfacing for the first time.

  • No Official Video for Juice=Juice’s New Song ‘Ai=Un+En+On’ — Fans Left Wondering Why

While Tsubaki Factory’s “Kurakura☆Climax” (another Hello! Project group) has been blowing up on TikTok, danced to by underground idols and influencers alike, Juice=Juice’s “Ai=Un+En+On” (a play on words echoing “a-i-u-e-o,” the first five vowel sounds in Japanese) has been left with no MV and not even official live footage. Over on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, posters kept pointing out that “Ai-u-e-on” had real potential to take off as a song — so why isn’t the agency pushing it?

    1AnonymousSep 15, 2026 11:30
Song quality aside, if that track had been sung by a Juice=Juice member with real drawing power, I bet it would've gotten some buzz.
    4AnonymousSep 15, 2026 11:36

Even on YouTube they uploaded the "Shakunetsu LIVE" video, but for some reason it's the crappy "Koi Tokei" — they should be uploading Ai-u-e-on instead. It's absurd.

Hello! Station has plenty of other videos they haven't uploaded either, so there's no reason Tsubaki should get priority — especially when Tsubaki's already getting a flood of live footage pushed on them that didn't even air on Hello! Station.

The opening line is 'kawaii ko-chan' (cutie-pie) — strong hook right there.

    Background and Key Points

At Hello! Project, the call on whether to release an MV or official live footage for a given song seems to be left entirely to the agency’s discretion, with potential for TikTok spread apparently one factor weighed in that decision. In this case, fans reacted to the fact that Juice=Juice’s “Ai=Un+En+On” is spreading organically among underground idols and influencers, yet is getting almost no official support. Within the thread, many compared this to the treatment given to fellow Hello! Project group Tsubaki Factory’s “Kurakura☆Climax,” with the discussion zeroing in on an uneven allocation of promotional resources between groups — an otherwise opaque part of the agency’s decision-making that fans rarely get a window into.

Posters started sorting moves by era (Showa, Heisei, Reiwa) and even debated who threw the first-ever Powerbomb. With each reply adding a new move name and no one derailing the thread, it turned into a genuine showcase of just how deep wrestling fans’ knowledge runs.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Pro wrestling move names mix Japanese and English terms depending on the promotion and era, with many coined by commentators and announcers themselves. The “16-Mon Kick” mentioned in the thread is famously Giant Baba’s move, while the “Tombstone Piledriver” is associated with the original Tiger Mask — both names are rooted in Japan’s pro wrestling broadcast culture. Where the thread split was over the Powerbomb’s origin: some argued it was born by accident during Antonio Inoki’s 1977 mixed-match bout against Monster Man, while others credited Tenryu Genichiro with popularizing it. Neither theory has been settled as the definitive account. It’s worth noting that the origins of wrestling moves are poorly documented in written sources and rely heavily on fans’ memories and secondhand accounts. Move names also often use catchy Japanese-English coinages or kanji phrasing, and which moves fans grew up with tends to vary by generation — both factors that helped fuel the thread’s momentum.

  • Does Weight Training Actually Protect You? 5ch: “In the End It’s All Show…”

A thread on 5ch’s Newsokuvip board kicked off with the question, “Does weight training actually help you defend yourself?” Posters with martial arts experience chimed in with comments like “I box and weigh 100kg, so I’ve never lost a fight,” and pointed out that “martial arts training beats weightlifting when it comes to real strength.” From there the discussion branched out into anxieties about “yami baito” (illicit gig-work) burglars targeting people’s homes, and crime-prevention tips like leaving the lights on at the entrance and in rooms overnight. Opinions in the thread split over whether muscle serves mainly as a visual deterrent or is actually useful in a real confrontation.

(っ´ω`c) In the end, weight training really is all show…

    (ꐦ·᷅ὢ·᷄ꐦ ) But that doesn't mean it's useless

There's even a slang term for it — kids chasing that quick dopamine hit — so I guess they just assume they can easily score a huge payout

Even if you only get paid 50,000 or 100,000 yen, you're looking at over a decade in prison

(´@ᾥ@`) It does help — weight training is a fight, it builds confidence,
(´@ᾥ@`) You're always fighting; even while lifting you're picturing combat,
(´@ᾥ@`) Some people get overconfident, but anyone seriously into lifting keeps building meticulous plans,
(´@ᾥ@`) That gives your life structure and keeps your mind constantly engaged,
(´@ᾥ@`) That mindset keeps you imagining different scenarios and thinking through conflict,
(´@ᾥ@`) And that becomes self-defense — the muscle itself becomes a means of protecting yourself

(っ´ω`c) So weight training really is a fight

(´@ᾥ@`) That's right, you're always fighting — you should start fighting too, right now

(´@ᾥ@`) To put it plainly, once you commit, three months is enough to transform a body that's been out of shape for 10 or 20 years
(´@ᾥ@`) Think of it like being stranded and forced into survival mode with no food or water

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The thread grew out of a wave of news reports about “yami baito” (illicit gig-work) burglars targeting private homes, which has led more people to think about weight training and self-defense as ways to protect themselves. The discussion split between those who argued that muscle is only a visual deterrent and falls short of real martial-arts skill in an actual fight, and those who argued that serious lifters develop a different mindset and sense of planning that itself functions as self-defense. On the subject of yami baito, some pointed out the harsh mismatch between a payout of just tens of thousands of yen and a prison sentence of over a decade, reigniting discussion of how badly the young people who take these jobs come out on the losing end. It’s worth noting that the “self-defense” discussed here isn’t about the legal right to self-defense, but is used more loosely to mean everyday crime-prevention awareness.
