  • Asian Games in Aichi: Ticket Sales Sluggish, Empty Seats Stand Out — 5ch: ‘Even Soccer Can’t Fill Seats?’

The Sankei Shimbun reports that ticket sales for the Asian Games currently underway in Aichi and Nagoya have been sluggish, with empty seats a common sight, and Governor Hideaki Omura has admitted the event is “struggling.” On a thread on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board (a general live-chat board), posters voiced surprise that even Japan’s national soccer team matches aren’t drawing strong crowds, while others reported that less mainstream sports like kabaddi and sepak takraw are apparently holding their own in ticket sales. Some suggested that Japan’s soccer squad, built mainly around U-21 players, may be hurting attendance, while others questioned why the mascot’s design was changed after it had already been chosen through a public competition. Various theories were floated over what’s behind the muted excitement.

    Soccer is Japan's U-21 second/third string.
Baseball is the amateur corporate-league (shakaijin) national team.
Only Korea's playing for real, since military exemption is on the line — their soccer squad is U-23 plus overage slots, and their baseball roster is stacked with KBO title-caliber players

The mascot — they picked it through a public competition, and then changed the design after it was already decided, which makes no sense

The original design looked cool, like it could've been an enemy character from Mega Man

In the final version the pupils got bigger, the shading around the eyes got smaller, the fingers and feet and everything got rounder, and they added a smiling mouth

And as a costumed mascot it's basically a different creature altogether

The original cool design was better, why'd they change it?

    Background and Key Points

The Asian Games are the largest multi-sport event in Asia after the Summer Olympics, and this edition, hosted in Aichi and Nagoya, had already drawn attention beforehand over costs reported to have ballooned past the original budget and over questions about the organizing setup. In the thread, the makeup of the competing squads was a key point of debate: since Japan’s soccer team is built mainly around U-21 reserve players, some argued it’s unfair to compare its attendance to that of full national-team matches, while others voiced disappointment that “even with Japan hosting, there’s just no excitement.” Images purporting to show ticket sales figures were also posted, with claims that lower-profile sports like kabaddi and sepak takraw were outselling soccer and baseball, though no source or official tally could be confirmed within the thread itself, so the accuracy is unclear. Talk about the event’s operating costs and the mascot’s design change also came up, but all of this remains speculation confined to 5ch and should be read as separate from any official announcement.

  • Kyoto University Grad, Now Jobless and Depressed: Life-Advice Thread Sparks Mixed Reactions

A poster who graduated from Kyoto University but quit their job due to depression and is now unemployed and living as a shut-in turned to 5ch’s Newsokku VIP board to ask, “What should I do with my life from here?” Despite their academic credentials, they found no clear path back into society — and the thread filled with a wide range of responses, from blunt “stop making excuses” tough love, to suggestions to start with exercise or light work, to questions about whether they’d ever seen a psychiatrist. The poster met most suggestions with “I can’t,” repeatedly insisting they’d hit their limit physically and mentally.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This kind of “life-advice thread” is a familiar format on 5ch — anonymity tends to bring out a mix of blunt tough love and genuine sympathy. The thread split over whether recovery from depression is a matter of willpower or a process that has to include the physical body, with “stop making excuses” pushback running alongside concern about forcing oneself to push too hard. Some pointed out that academic achievement doesn’t necessarily correlate with social adaptability, meaning the “Kyoto University graduate” label alone doesn’t capture the full extent of the poster’s struggles. And as one commenter’s “undiagnosed” remark highlights, some of the mental health conditions the poster describes are self-reported rather than confirmed by an actual medical diagnosis — a nuance easy to miss from the quotes alone. The poster’s line about “never having had a single friend in my entire life” also offers a clue to how their isolation deepened over time.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Newsokku VIP) thread “What should I do with my life from here.”

  • ‘Sorry, Rei-Rei’: New Fan Burns Out After Six Months of Oshi Support, 5ch Gives Her the Cold Shoulder

A thread appeared on the Hello! Project subforum in which a new fan who had spent six months supporting Juice=Juice’s Rei Inoue (Rei-Rei) announced their retirement, writing “I’m just exhausted now.” The post recounted a support journey full of firsts — their first event, their first cheki (instant-photo) session — but most replies compared it to the pattern of “Gato-san,” a well-known regular poster notorious for repeatedly writing emotional “retirement” essays, and cast doubt on whether the story was even true. Still, some commenters took it at face value and offered genuine advice like “just do your fan activities at your own pace,” and the thread grew into a broader debate about emotional distance and burnout in oshi culture.

    Background and Talking Points

On 5ch’s idol boards, emotionally-written posts announcing a “graduation” or “retirement” appear on a regular basis, and they’re often mocked by tying them back to similar past posts with an “oh, it’s that guy again” reaction. This time too, the writing style and structure felt familiar to readers, so the conversation focused more on rating the poster’s “literary talent” than on whether the story was actually true. That said, genuine oshi-activity burnout isn’t a rare phenomenon — spending on events and merchandise, plus the pressure of comparing yourself to others on social media, has been pointed to elsewhere as a real source of strain. Several replies in the thread also offered the practical advice to “ignore everyone else and go at your own pace,” so a mix of mockery and genuinely useful advice is what characterizes this thread. Worth clarifying to avoid misunderstanding: the “goodbye” in the title is the common phrase for retiring from oshi activities, not a reference to self-harm.

  • Lawson’s Budget Bento Slammed as ‘Livestock Feed’ — Skimpy Fillings Spark Backlash

A thread on 5ch (Livegalileo board) kicked off with a photo of Lawson’s cut-price bento, its corn and what looked like government-stockpiled rice among the fillings prompting cries of “that’s literally livestock feed.” The discussion spiraled into griping about rising prices in general: a beef kalbi bento now runs 740 yen, and the salmon in the salmon bento is apparently the pricey “bodakko” cut. Posters compared it to bentos from discount chains like Lamu and Don Quijote, and opinions split hard over the contradiction of “prices are through the roof, yet young people still line up at Starbucks dressed in brand-name clothes.”

    No sense of style
The crowd buying this doesn't care about having any greens on it at all

Background and Talking Points on This Thread

Convenience store bento prices have been climbing in recent years amid rising ingredient and logistics costs, and the thread’s sense that a bento now runs “740 yen” versus “490 yen before” fits that trend. The “stockpiled rice” mentioned in the replies likely refers to the government-released reserve rice put on the market in response to soaring rice prices, and has become a stock phrase for mocking price hikes. “Bodakko” is a brand name for salted salmon, a relatively pricey cut often given as a gift, which fed the complaints that it’s overkill for a bento filling. The thread split between viewing budget bentos as “companies working hard to offer more options” versus “a symbol of declining living standards” — and that same divide showed up in the debate over young people’s spending habits.

  • Kitagawa Rio’s Flute Performance Stuns Fans — 5ch: ‘Saved It in Seconds’

A flute performance video posted to Instagram by Kitagawa Rio — a former member of Morning Musume。’25 who now works as a TV Tokyo announcer — became a hot topic on a Hello! Project thread on 5ch. Her smooth, clear tone drew surprised praise like “saved it in seconds” and “what a beautiful tone,” though some cooler voices pushed back, arguing that calling it “professional level” was an overstatement since she’d never won a competition prize. A photo from when she reportedly started playing flute seriously at age 11 was also shared, backing up the talent she’d talked about since her idol days.

The tone is incredibly clear and smooth, it’s amazing

    Seriously, so true
During last year's spring tour and Winter Hello! she sometimes looked like all the life had drained from her expression
Her expression was good even at the graduation live, but even seeing her from like 20cm away, her back and shoulders had gotten scarily thin, almost skeletal — it was pitiful
I really want Rio-san to be rewarded and hit it big more than anyone

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Kitagawa Rio graduated from Morning Musume。’25 and now works as a staff announcer at TV Tokyo. Her flute playing had been mentioned as a special talent since her idol days, but she rarely performed it in earnest on stage, so this Instagram post gave fans a fresh look at just how skilled she really is. Opinions split on the thread over how to take the phrase “professional level” — some called it an exaggeration given the lack of an objective track record like competition awards, while others praised her tone and technical skill at face value. The photos she posted show she’d been practicing since around age 11, meaning this wasn’t a sudden reveal but the payoff of years of accumulated practice — a bit of background that’s easy to miss from the scattered comments alone.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and summaries of the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Kitagawa Rio-chaso, right? She’s always said she could play the flute — did you know she was this professional-level?” (“-chaso” is an affectionate, cutesy variant of “-chan”).

I hate Hololive, so this soured my image of McDonald's

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Whatever’s Live G” board was originally meant for sports commentary, but during hours with nothing to comment on, threads like this one — filled with unrelated images and idle chatter — often spring up. This time too, the thread’s title, “Dabu-chan,” had almost nothing to do with its actual content, and the topic kept shifting as the conversation went on. Opinions split over how to judge Hololive’s character designs, with a divide between those who preferred simpler artwork and those who favored more ornate designs. Reactions to the Hololive x McDonald’s collaboration likewise showed a mix of favorable comments about the product itself and concerns about its impact on the brand’s image. Note that this article omits certain posts — including baseless claims naming real companies and crude remarks about real people’s appearance or occupations — out of consideration for fact-checking and decency.

A post went up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board asking whether Zhao Yun might be the only famous Three Kingdoms general who can be called both “competent” and “a genuinely good person.” Replies quickly nominated one contender after another — Zhang Liao, Xiahou Dun, Lu Kang, Yu Jin, Sun Jian, Zhuge Jin — but each pick came with a caveat: “competent, but his character’s questionable” or “seems like a good guy, but there’s not much evidence.” No one landed a knockout case. The debate kept circling back to one question: is the judgment based on the official history, or on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which glorifies Liu Bei’s faction? As with Xu Shu’s famous “flight from Liu Bei” episode, some of these “nice stories” only appear in the Romance — and look quite different once you check the historical record.

He's the guy Sun Quan actually listens to

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The biggest reason this kind of general-ranking debate splits opinion is that the Three Kingdoms era has two very different types of “source material.” Chen Shou’s official history, the Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi), is a historical text based on contemporary records, while the 14th-century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms dramatizes events with Liu Bei’s faction cast as the heroes. Many of the “good guy” episodes widely known in Japan for figures like Zhao Yun and Xu Shu originate from the Romance, and the official history sometimes paints a rather different picture. Within the thread, multiple generals — such as Xu Shu and Xiahou Dun — came up as cases where the flattering tale in the Romance diverges from the historical record, and opinions split over which source should be the standard for judging “competence” or “good character.” The fact that later works, like Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s manga and Koei’s video games, have shaped how these generals are perceived today is also cited as a reason opinions vary from person to person.

  • Dial-Up Days and ‘Telehodai’ Nights: 5ch Says ‘That Old Buzz Is Gone From the Internet’

A thread titled “Memories of the Early Internet” popped up on 5ch’s Live Anything board, drawing in stories from the days before everyone had always-on broadband — dial-up connections, NTT’s late-night flat-rate “Telehodai” plan, even getting online through a Dreamcast. Some posters recalled “logging on every day buzzing with excitement,” while others lamented how dull the internet feels now by comparison. The thread also split over where exactly the early internet era ends, and whether users back then really were sharper than today’s.

    Re: #104
    Don't remember that one, lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In the dial-up era, NTT’s flat-rate late-night service “Telehodai” (launched in 1995, offering unlimited connection from 11pm to 8am) was, for many users, one of the few windows to get online without worrying about the phone bill piling up. Connection environments then changed dramatically around the turn of the millennium as ADSL began spreading. In the thread, opinions split over where to draw the line on the “early internet era” — some measured it by connection technology (dial-up vs. ADSL), while others measured it by culture, drawing the cutoff somewhere between the age of hand-coded personal HTML pages and the rise of blogging platforms. There’s no fixed definition, and readers should note that where people draw the line tends to depend on when they personally experienced it. It’s also worth noting that the claim “average IQ was higher back then” drew pushback from another poster who called it “a lawless wasteland” instead — a reminder that the rosy, idyllic image of the early internet isn’t a universally shared memory.

  • The ’90s Fighting Game Boom: 5ch Users Recall ‘Beat Someone with a Cheap Combo and an Ashtray Came Flying at You’

A thread reminiscing about the ’90s fighting game boom popped up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” (Anything Goes Live Commentary) board. The thread’s creator, apparently too young to have experienced it firsthand, wrote “I wish I’d been there for it” — which prompted a flood of hair-raising stories from users who actually haunted the arcades back then: beat someone with a cheap infinite combo and an ashtray would come flying at you, losers would spit on you, or your whole cabinet would get shoved against the wall with you still in the seat. Others pushed back, though, insisting “there was no such boom” or that it was “just a thing among teenage boys” — showing just how differently that era’s fever is remembered depending on generation and region.

I wonder how many times Shinseisha (publisher of Gamest magazine, notorious for controversial rankings that made angry readers joke about bombing their office) 'got bombed.'

    Background and Key Points

The ’90s fighting game boom is generally regarded as having kicked off with Capcom’s “Street Fighter II,” with SNK’s “Fatal Fury,” “Samurai Shodown,” and “KOF” series, along with Sega’s “Virtua Fighter,” driving its popularity from there. Arcades were also places where the gap in skill between players translated directly into real-world social tension. While the thread gathered stories like “ashtrays came flying” and “the guy I beat spat on me,” some commenters also pushed back with “there was no such boom” — suggesting the intensity of the experience varied widely depending on where you lived, your age, and how often you actually went to arcades. Unlike today’s online matches, the tension that came from playing face-to-face, along with unique etiquette like “get the other player’s consent before challenging them,” may be hard for younger generations to fully grasp.

  • Concerns Mount Over Ticket Sales for Tsubaki Factory’s Budokan Show — 5ch: ‘Even If Nobody Shows Up, It’ll Be Fun’

With idol group Tsubaki Factory gearing up for a Nippon Budokan concert, a thread titled “Day-of ideas to pack Budokan for Tsubaki” popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Posters pointed out that even past graduation concerts held at the same venue failed to fill every seat, and fans piled in with idea after idea — from bringing in Juice=Juice as the opening act to inviting Asakura Kizuki and Ogata Risa as special guests. Serious proposals mixed with joke posts, and the thread took off.

If Asakura and Ogata actually fight, does that count as budō (martial arts) and get them a discount on the Budokan rental fee?

Curtain off the entire 1st and 2nd floor and only sell arena-floor seats
Or better yet, make the whole arena floor the stage

While we're at it, might as well throw in one more member's graduation for good measure

Not to be harsh, but even getting every graduate back together couldn't fill the place, so this looks rough

If that couldn't fill the place, I don't know what could
    51AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:23
Have every member of Rito Kyame graduate and retire all at once
    That'd definitely fill the place
No clue what happens after that though lol

Turn it into one giant game of musical chairs with a single seat

Opening act: Morning Musume, Juice=Juice, ANGERME
    Guests: Asakura & Ogata

    60AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:25
Even if nobody shows up, I think Tsubaki's Budokan shows are actually pretty elaborate and fun
Kisora's graduation concert was great too — though the balloon segment was surprisingly serious

A sparring match between Asakura and Ogata between every song
    67AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:28

There's no way to sell it out, but there is a way to avoid a half-empty house
Just cancel the show that day
    77AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:33
When S/mileage did their first Budokan show, Morning Musume and ℃-ute were the guests
And they didn't even come on as the opener — they showed up in the middle of the show

    Re: #77
    That works too
Have Juice=Juice guest in the middle of the show

    Background and Talking Points

Nippon Budokan holds roughly 14,000 people, making it a venue that’s tough to sell out unless you’re one of Hello! Project’s top-tier acts. Tsubaki Factory has held member graduation concerts there before, and posters in the thread pointed out that even those past shows didn’t fill every seat. This thread wasn’t sparked by any official announcement — it was simply fans joking around about their ticket-sales anxiety and trading ideas, with posts competing more on creativity than realism, from suggestions to book other groups to proposals for guest appearances. Since the thread mixes genuine analysis with jokes, the posts shouldn’t be taken as statements of fact.
