  • Daisuke Hori Drops His ‘Short Sleeper’ Label, Sparks Debate With ‘Sleep However Long You Want’ Comment

Daisuke Hori built a name for himself as a self-proclaimed “short sleeper,” running courses and seminars based on his own sleep theories. This time, word that he’d dropped that label and declared “sleep time is free” made the rounds on 5ch and drew a wave of reactions. Commenters were split: some saw the timing of his pivot as setup for pushing new products or sponsorship deals, others demanded explanations and refunds for people who’d paid for his pricey courses, and a few actually praised the change in direction.

    3AnonymousSep 17, 2026 17:00
    Called it.
I predicted he'd pivot to cashing in on "sleep is important" content next.
This is just the setup for that.

    Re: #3
From "sleep is harmful!" to "life is sleep!"
Then he's got a plan to cash in on bedding sponsorships and the like.

    Weak move.
If that's the case, refund everyone who paid for his past programs.
    9AnonymousSep 17, 2026 17:03
He's basically saying the same thing as Captain Roger (the "freedom" line from One Piece).
    11AnonymousSep 17, 2026 17:04
Just as expected — he's still planning to keep selling his product.
    12AnonymousSep 17, 2026 17:04
Well, reflecting and changing course is a good thing.
But he still needs to apologize and pay damages to everyone he's scammed so far.
    17AnonymousSep 17, 2026 17:06
    Re: #12
He's not actually reflecting on anything — he'd already decided to drop the "30 minutes" claim before the stream even started.
Using controversy to build buzz and then pivoting to a new claim was the plan from day one.
    13AnonymousSep 17, 2026 17:04
Everyone naps outside their normal sleep hours anyway — he didn't need to make such an extreme claim.
He only says such over-the-top stuff because he's lying.
    18AnonymousSep 17, 2026 17:06
    Re: #13
Actually, this guy's been saying all along it's "30 minutes of core sleep plus 3 naps."
So napping is part of his "normal routine."
The "3 naps" part is just being conveniently cut out.
Not that I'm defending the guy or anything.
    14AnonymousSep 17, 2026 17:05
Sounds like one of those "I only realized after actually trying it" moments.

What's even the difference between "core sleep" and a "nap" in the first place…
It can't be the same as a normal person's nap.

    Re: #24
Honestly, it doesn't really make sense.
But he's always had that kind of loophole built in.
Hori's pretty sharp when it comes to covering himself.

Getting way too full of himself — someone should just sue him for fraud already.

    Re: #71
    Well, I don't really know.
I'm not defending him or anything, so it doesn't bother me, but Hori seems like the type who'd actually go after people for damages, so that's just a heads-up.
Though he's probably not reading this board anyway.
    86AnonymousSep 17, 2026 17:45

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Daisuke Hori is known for building courses and seminars around a “short sleeper” theory centered on claims like “30 minutes of sleep a day,” and some posters in the thread say tuition for his programs ran into the hundreds of thousands of yen. It’s not unusual for self-help influencers pushing homegrown health theories to later revise their headline claims, and the timing of such revisions tends to get linked to the possibility of new sponsorship deals or promotions. Opinions in the thread split over whether to view his explanation of “core sleep plus naps” as an after-the-fact excuse, or to take the shift in stance itself as an honest course correction. It should be noted that whether Hori’s course content or statements legally amount to fraud is a matter for the courts to decide, and speculation or judgments made on 5ch don’t necessarily reflect fact.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyo G) thread “[Image] Daisuke Hori finally drops his “short sleeper” title and starts declaring “Sleep however long you want!” lol“.

  • Ishiyama Sakura (Juice=Juice) vs. Sakagawa (AKB48) in a Takikomi Gohan Showdown — Fans React to Announcer Kitagawa Rio Co-Starring

TV Tokyo’s “Pekomogu Kitchen” has announced that Juice=Juice’s Ishiyama Sakura and AKB48’s Sakagawa will face off in an autumn takikomi gohan (mixed rice) battle airing September 20, with announcer Kitagawa Rio on board as host. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, fans welcomed the news as a “dream collaboration,” while others flagged a discrepancy with an old rumor, writing things like “wasn’t there a rumor she couldn’t appear alongside Hello! Project?” about Announcer Kitagawa. Talk also turned to Ishiyama and Sakagawa being in the same school year, and to Ishiyama’s long stint as a trainee, with reactions spreading well beyond a simple show announcement.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Pekomogu Kitchen” is one of TV Tokyo’s regular/special programming slots that leans heavily on idol guests, and as reply #105 notes, the show’s reputation as a network that “gives idols a lot of chances” has long circulated among Hello! Project and AKB48 fans. What drew attention this time wasn’t the matchup itself so much as the role of announcer Kitagawa Rio as host. As reply #13 points out, there had reportedly been a rumor among fans that Announcer Kitagawa “couldn’t appear alongside Hello! Project” — her actually being billed on the same show as Juice=Juice’s Ishiyama Sakura contradicted that rumor, which is what sparked the thread’s reaction. Since that backstory isn’t in the show’s official summary, it can look like a plain appearance announcement at first glance, but this contradiction is really the core of the thread’s excitement. Meanwhile, the “Is AKB the B-team?” comments in replies #7 and #72 aren’t a judgment on Sakagawa’s own ability — they reflect fan frustration with AKB48’s overall media exposure and how the group’s unit projects have been handled in recent years, and should be read separately from any assessment of Sakagawa as an individual.

  • Bunshun Report: ‘Johnny’s Pressured the Industry to Block M!LK’s Rise’ Splits Opinion on 5ch

After Bunshun reported that Johnny & Associates has been pressuring various parties not to cooperate in promoting M!LK, reaction spread across the Hello! Project board on 5ch. The thread split between doubts that Johnny’s still has that kind of clout left and claims that its old ties to TV network insiders remain deeply entrenched. The discussion also touched on how no Johnny’s-affiliated talent took part in MAJ, a new music award meant to replace the Japan Record Awards, fueling debate over the industry’s shifting balance of power.

MAJ was created to do away with the industry's old culture of favoritism and awards you could basically buy.
A lot of artists who bought into that philosophy showed up for the ceremony.
But not a single person from the old ○○○ [agency] took part.

That was unheard-of exposure for M!LK at the time, and M!LK fans flooded X thanking Fukumura Mizuki for it.

Then the following year, in 2025, "Suki Sugite Metsu" (roughly, "Too Much Love, I'm Dead") turned M!LK into a household name.

The talent agencies' media dominance lurking behind the SMAP breakup controversy
    https://dot.asahi.com/articles/-/25698?page=4

"Recently, TV Asahi formed a joint venture with CyberAgent to launch the internet broadcaster AbemaTV, and its dedicated app has been a huge success with 10 million downloads. Background and key points of debate

Behind this story is the fact that the former Johnny & Associates was restructured into STARTO ENTERTAINMENT following the 2023 sexual abuse scandal, and its traditional balance of power with the TV networks has been shifting ever since. Thread opinion split over whether Johnny’s still has enough clout left to pressure other agencies: some pointed to M!LK’s rising profile as evidence the agency’s influence is fading, while others argued that the old-boy network between the agency and TV network producers can’t be severed so easily. Another point of debate was MAJ (Music Awards Japan), reportedly created to replace the Japan Record Awards and do away with the old culture of backroom favoritism — though some see it as nothing more than a ‘new power structure’ led by a different faction of the industry. Worth noting, though not addressed in the original report, is that Bunshun’s story itself rests on anonymous testimony from industry insiders, and the agency has issued no official confirmation or denial.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Bunshun] Johnny & Associates Pressuring Everyone Not to Help Promote M!LK lolololololololololololololol.”

  • Elementary School Truancy: ‘20,000 in 2004 → 140,000 in 2024’ Sparks Debate on 5ch

Around the time of the 2004 curriculum guideline revision, the old term “school refusal” (登校拒否) gave way to “non-attendance” (不登校), and not going to school came to be treated as a choice the child is entitled to make. On 5ch, users picked up on this policy shift and noted that the number of truant elementary schoolers has climbed from roughly 20,000 in 2004 to around 140,000 in 2024, sparking a thread. Some argued this mirrors the Children and Families Agency’s “Children First” policy, while others countered that respecting a child’s will is barely distinguishable from neglecting their education. Opinions split hardest over just how much paternalism should be tolerated.

This truancy philosophy is exactly the Children and Families Agency's "Children First" policy.

The idea is to respect the child's own will instead of imposing adult opinions on them — to honor a child's choice not to go to school.
    9AnonymousSep 17, 2026 08:06
Up until around 2004, it was called "school refusal" (登校拒否), a term coined by psychiatrists — the idea being it's a mental-health issue, not something to be ashamed of. Schools were kept busy just caring for these kids.

After the 2004 curriculum guideline revision, the term changed to "non-attendance" (不登校). Whether or not to go to school became the child's own personal choice, and the freedom not to attend was recognized. To respect the child's choice, schools were no longer required to take any special action.

That's the difference, by the way.

Kids can't judge for themselves, right?
They'll just drift toward whatever's easiest.
Isn't it the adult's job to correct that?
In the end, it's for the kid's own good.
    43AnonymousSep 17, 2026 08:22

You can't know that without understanding why they stopped attending in the first place.
Assuming "they just want to take it easy" is its own kind of snap judgment.
If a kid is being bullied and doesn't want to go, and you just yell "get in there, go go go!!" regardless, you're setting them up for the worst possible outcome.
That's why the basic principle in education theory is: fix the root cause, don't just force compliance.

Persuading the kid should be the parents' job alone.
No matter how much some other adult claims to say it "for the kid's sake," butting in like that isn't right.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The shift from “school refusal” to “non-attendance” overlapped with the 2004 revision of Japan’s curriculum guidelines, a period when treating school absence as the child’s own choice — rather than a symptom of mental illness — gained momentum. What split opinion in the thread boils down to a single question: is this “respect for the child’s will” a form of support for their growth, or an abdication of adult responsibility? It’s striking that the word “paternalism” gets used with opposite connotations depending on which side is arguing. Worth noting, as a premise the thread itself never addressed: real-world truancy is tied to multiple factors — bullying, home environment, developmental traits, and more — so reducing the rise in numbers to nothing but a change in terminology or policy would be jumping to conclusions.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyō G) thread “[Sad News] Elementary school truancy: 20,000 in 2004 ← yikes, 140,000 in 2024 ← wait, WHAT?!“

    Background and Key Points

This thread was started on 5ch’s “Live Commentary G” board (なんでも実況G), a board where viewers post in real time alongside TV broadcasts. It wasn’t built around any specific topic of discussion — the content is mostly casual chatter during the broadcast, and the repeated posting of the same image in the “glad I was born in Kagawa Prefecture” copypasta is one example of that culture. The comment claiming the typhoon’s path is being “manipulated” is a standard running joke poking fun at distrust of weather forecasts, not a factual claim. Likewise, the post about getting blocked on a VTuber’s stream includes no further detail, so there’s no way to confirm whether it’s true. Live-commentary threads tend to be fragmented in both timeline and context, so it’s worth keeping in mind that individual posts shouldn’t be taken at face value as standalone facts.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Live Commentary G) thread “Let’s all watch Ojarumaru together and get along🏡.”

  • Lawson Photo Sparks Cook-at-Home vs. Convenience Store Debate — ¥750 Bento Shocks Thread

A photo of a Lawson product sparked a heated thread on 5ch’s Newsoku VIP board comparing the cost-effectiveness of home cooking versus convenience store food. One poster’s jab of “you could just make this yourself” drew the retort “post a photo right now then — if you can’t, konbini wins,” while others argued that microwaved rice topped with a sausage could cost as little as 100–200 yen. But when someone actually bought a bento at Lawson, it rang up at 750 yen, expanding the discussion into whether convenience stores or eating out is the better deal.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

On 5ch’s chat boards, threads mocking cheap meals often spark clashes between the “home cooking is enough” camp and the “convenience store is fine” camp. This time, the claim that microwaved rice topped with a sausage could cost as little as 100–200 yen drew pushback that this ignores the hassle of keeping ingredients stocked and using up leftovers. Meanwhile, one poster reported that a bento bought at Lawson actually cost 750 yen, sparking further discussion about the price gap between convenience store bentos and eating out. Note that the latter half of the thread devolved into personal attacks between specific posters, so this article excerpts only the portion comparing the cost-effectiveness of home cooking versus convenience stores.

  • Idol Ebata Hisaki’s Bread Recipient Identified as FruitsZipper’s Matsumoto Karen

A thread went up on 5ch’s “Hello Project” board over a video of Hello Project idol Ebata Hisaki handing bread to an unfamiliar woman. The woman in the clip wasn’t identified by the original poster, and the thread kicked off with a chorus of “who is that?” Before long, posters pointed out that the woman was Matsumoto Karen, the “pink” member of idol group FruitsZipper, with some adding she’s “a genuine Ebata Hisaki fan.” What started as a guessing game over her identity quickly turned into a discussion about fandom crossing agency lines.

    Somebody's older sister?

    Background and Talking Points

Hello Project and Stardust Promotion-affiliated FruitsZipper are entirely separate agencies with no shared lineage, but it’s not unusual for idols to be fans of each other or to cross paths, and this thread is really just another example of that. Posters describing Matsumoto Karen as “a genuine Ebata Hisaki fan” likely reflects the fact that it’s well known among fans that she regularly attends Ebata’s events. Also, as one early comment in the thread noted — “don’t post illegal clips when the paid stream is still for sale” — unauthorized reposting of paid livestream footage on social media is a recurring source of friction across the idol fan community in general, and it’s possible this particular video should have been watched through official channels rather than however it ended up online. One point worth clarifying for readers: Matsumoto Karen’s appearance here isn’t a “scandal” — it’s simply an episode of fans and idols mingling across group lines.

  • Why w-inds. Never Hit It Big: 5ch Blames “Johnny’s Pressure” and Digs Into the TV Politics of the Era

A thread on 5ch heated up around the idea that w-inds. would have sold far better if the old Johnny’s & Associates hadn’t been such a dominant rival at the time. Posters pointed out that dance-and-vocal groups from the same era — w-inds., DA PUMP, Lead, and FLAME — were effectively shut out of appearing on shows like “Music Station” and “HEY!HEY!HEY!” back then. Users also cited the 2023 press conference in which the former Johnny’s agency admitted to working to exclude groups from rival agencies, sparking discussion of the TV industry’s power dynamics at the time. Others pushed back, arguing it simply came down to popularity and talent, and the debate stayed split right to the end.

Wait, really? They got pushed pretty hard though, no? ("gori-oshi" = heavy-handed promotion)
    7AnonymousSep 16, 2026 23:24
Nah, they did okay, but even without Johnny's capping their TV appearances they never would've taken over the industry — Johnny's groups and DA PUMP were still around.
    8AnonymousSep 16, 2026 23:25
People tend to overlook it because of Keita's wife Ayaya (Aya Matsuura), but w-inds. used to be pretty popular back in the day — plenty of guys at the time got into dancing because they looked up to w-inds.
    9AnonymousSep 16, 2026 23:25
w-inds., DA PUMP, Lead, and Da-iCE all would've sold way more than they actually did if they'd come up in a different era.

    Re: #11
Kohaku's run by Burning, so of course they could get on it. Music Station's different — Johnny's and Tanabe Agency have a sworn-brotherhood pact, so they're locked out there. It's really the Suo faction vs. the Tanabe faction going at it inside the music industry association (Ongeikyo).

Being shut out of Music Station, Utaban, and HEY!HEY!HEY! in that era was brutal. Once Johnny's finally lifted the ban and appeared on HEY!HEY!HEY!, the Rising Production regulars who used to be fixtures there disappeared — which made Johnny's pressure visible for everyone to see.

    Re: #87
Not having their own prime-time variety show was rough. Arashi, SMAP, KinKi Kids, TOKIO, and V6 had it good with their variety shows.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It is a matter of public record that, at the September 2023 press conference held by the former Johnny’s & Associates (now SMILE-UP.) in the wake of the sexual abuse scandal, Inohara Yoshihiko admitted — with then-president Higashiyama Noriyuki present — that “there had been moves and tacit consideration aimed at excluding groups from other agencies,” and the thread’s citations are based on this fact. The view raised later in the thread, however — that this was really a power struggle between the Burning Productions and Tanabe Agency factions within the music industry association (Ongeikyo) — is a narrative often repeated within the industry, but it has never been officially confirmed and remains at the level of rumor. Readers can easily conflate two extremes here: “couldn’t get on TV” being equated with “lacked talent,” versus “pressure was the sole cause.” Even within the thread, the camp arguing “it was an era when media exposure directly drove popularity” and the camp arguing “they simply failed to produce results” ran side by side right to the end. As for how widespread flip-phones actually were at the time, or what fan communities really looked like, accounts vary even among those who were there, so there isn’t much solid material to draw a firm conclusion from.

  • Juice=Juice’s Misaki Ebata Walks 10km After Rehearsal Ends Early — Report Sparks Reaction

Juice=Juice (Hello! Project) member Misaki Ebata reported on her blog that on a day when rehearsal wrapped up early, she “walked 10km after rehearsal.” The post got picked up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, sparking a thread that mixed genuine astonishment at her stamina with a kind of calculation contest over how much time and distance 10km actually represents. Commenters cited examples like Shinjuku Station to Tokyo Station, or Shinjuku to Ogikubo, as roughly 10km, and opinions split over how to take the claim.

If rehearsal was at the agency office in Takanawa, walking back to the dorm (or home?) would be about 10km — something like that, maybe?

    Background and Talking Points

Walking 10km at an average pace (roughly 4–6km/h) takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and the thread turned into a running fact-check using concrete Tokyo geography — “Shinjuku to Tokyo Station is about 6km,” “Shinjuku to Ogikubo is about 10km” — as posters tried to pin down just how far that really is. While covering that kind of distance in the middle of a busy idol schedule impressed people as a feat of stamina, plenty of replies also tried to verify whether the claimed distance and time actually lined up, and reactions split between taking the post at face value and eyeing it with a bit of skepticism.

  • Sumo Mascot Holds Court Again Tonight in Famous 5ch VIP Thread: “Dosukoi — Time to Stir Up a Storm in the Sumo World”

On 5channel’s Newssoku VIP board, there’s a famous recurring thread featuring a character in a sumo wrestler costume, ⊂(´・ω・`)⊃, who faithfully chants “dosukoi!” (a traditional sumo kiai/chant) at every post. This day was no exception: under the banner of “training,” the character dutifully responded to every single ASCII-art post and photoshopped image with its trademark cheer. Along the way the thread wandered into late-night chatter about chanko nabe (the hearty stew sumo wrestlers eat) and a manga-recommendation showdown, and the thread’s familiar emoticon regulars comforted a poster who said they’d been hit with unkind words in another thread. There’s no real argument or conflict here — it’s simply a snapshot of the easygoing atmosphere that late-night VIP threads run on.

    Background and Key Points

On Newssoku VIP, threads where a fixed AA character camps out and keeps reacting to every post are a recurring format, and this time’s “Mambo Room” is one of them — its defining feature is ⊂(´・ω・`)⊃, dressed in a sumo costume, tacking a “dosukoi” onto every single post it responds to. The line where a poster says they were told to “d*e” didn’t happen in this thread itself — it’s a report the poster brought in about an insult received in a different thread, and it’s easy to misread it as trouble happening here, when really the regulars are just comforting them. There’s no incident or conflict going on; it’s simply a faithful record of the loose mix of chit-chat and mutual encouragement that late-night VIP threads run on.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Newssoku VIP) thread “⊂(´・ω・`)⊃ Dosukoi! Mambo Room.”
