  • Photos of a Man Who Reached 175cm (5’9″) via Bone-Lengthening Surgery Go Viral: 5ch Says ‘All That Effort for a Failure?’

Images of a person said to have reached 175cm (about 5’9″) in height after undergoing “bone-lengthening surgery” — a procedure in which bones are deliberately cut and surgically stretched — went viral on 5ch’s “Nanidemo Jikkyo G” board. The thread mixed worries about the risks of the surgery and its long recovery period with skepticism about why anyone would go to such lengths over height, with sharp comments like “Going that far just to end up at 175cm? Sounds like a failure.” At the same time, posters with height complexes chimed in with envy, and the thread quickly filled with personal theories about the relationship between height, dating, and age.

Guess there's nothing you can do about a big head and short legs, huh.

Spending your whole life and a fortune just to hit 175cm…
I'm genuinely grateful to my parents and God that I at least grew tall.
    Don't bring up hair, though.

Any shorter than this and there's no way you're getting a girlfriend.

Even after doing all that, he's still shorter than me.

How many years does it even take before you can live normally again after bone-lengthening?
Feels like you're throwing away the best years of your life.

    Re: #7
I mean, those "best years" wouldn't be much fun at 160cm (5'3") either.
You're seriously underestimating how brutal the height game is.

Going through all that just to end up at 175cm — let's be honest, that's a failure lmaooooooooooo

    Between a 175cm (5'9") average-looking 42-year-old

    and a 165cm (5'5") handsome 22-year-old,

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Bone-lengthening surgery is an orthopedic procedure in which the shin or thigh bone is cut and then gradually stretched using an external fixator or an internal rod while the bone regenerates. It’s said to add anywhere from a few centimeters to around 10cm of height, but it also reportedly comes with intense pain, strain on the nerves and muscles, and over a year of rehabilitation. As one commenter in the thread pointed out, “bone and skin can be stretched all you want, but muscles and nerves don’t stretch” — a reminder that height isn’t the only thing that changes. The discussion’s focus has shifted away from the surgery itself and toward the more subjective question of how much height actually affects dating and marriage; it’s worth noting that claims like “half of women would pick a 175cm middle-aged guy over a handsome 165cm young guy” aren’t backed by any real data — they’re just gut-feeling opinions.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nanidemo Jikkyo G) thread “[Images] A Person Who Gained 175cm of Height via Bone-Lengthening Surgery Appears.”

  • Revealing She’s a Woman Gets Her No Extra Love — 5ch: ‘No Reactions, Just Feels Empty’

A poster on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board lamented that “nobody believes me even when I reveal I’m a woman,” and when they posted a photo as proof, the thread barely gained traction — instead drawing appraising replies like “who cares if she’s dumb, it’s the body that matters.” The discussion gradually shifted into a debate over what “being showered with attention” actually means in concrete terms, with some users suggesting the poster try livestreaming, while others dismissed “I’m-a-woman-but” threads outright as attention-seeking nuisances — exposing a real divide over the thread’s basic premise.

Exchange contact info with me and tell me my face is cute.

    Background and Key Points

“I’m-a-woman-but” threads are a long-running staple format on anonymous boards like VIP, and since there’s no way to verify anyone’s identity, nobody can ever confirm whether the claim is true. In this case too, even after proof photos were posted, the thread failed to gain much traction, and the discussion shifted into questioning the very premise that “being a woman should mean getting preferential treatment.” The thread split between users demanding photos or a livestream and those who dismissed this kind of self-declared thread outright as an annoying bid for attention, telling posters to take it to social media instead. One thing readers might misread is that a thread getting a lot of replies isn’t proof of being “showered with attention” — mocking and appraising comments count toward that same reply total. It’s also worth keeping in mind that on an anonymous board there’s no way to verify a poster’s claimed gender, so the thread’s core premise can never actually be confirmed either way.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsspeed VIP) thread “Is the era of being showered with attention just for being a woman over?“

  • Sayashi Riho’s “Koufuku Shikkaku” Sparks Big Buzz — 5ch: “She Should Just Come Back”

Manety, the manager of former Morning Musume member Sayashi Riho, posted on X about the new song “Koufuku Shikkaku” (“Happy Disqualification”), saying she’d been told by the Morning Musume director that it’s “a genuinely good song” and that Matsuoka Mayu had also offered warm words about it on the radio. Sayashi currently stars in a drama depicting a romance between two women, and 5ch saw a flurry of posts comparing the scale of the response, and her Spotify monthly listener numbers, to other Hello!Project graduates. While some worried about ticket sales for her tour, others reported a wave of new fans drawn in by the drama, leaving posters split over how much room Sayashi still has to grow.

Even the Morning Musume director told me “Koufuku Shikkaku” is a genuinely good song — Sayashi’s really been putting in the work, y’know 😭

Matsuoka Mayu also had kind words for it on the radio. I’ll keep grinding it out, inch by inch (lit. “advancing on my belly” — a phrase for slow, steady effort against the odds) 🫡

Among Hello!Project OGs, the only ones who can actually pull that off are Tsuji and Fujimoto.
Even the OGs who left UP-FRONT end up relying on Hello!Pro and its fans in the end.

Background and key points of this discussion

Sayashi Riho was a member of Morning Musume。’14 from 2011 to 2015, and has focused on stage plays and dramas since leaving the group. Manety is a manager at the same talent agency who has handled several Hello!Project graduates, and this post is seen as part of that same pattern. Opinions split in the thread over whether Spotify monthly listener counts really back up the claim of a “big response,” with some pointing out that the play-counting method was recently changed, making simple comparisons difficult. It’s also worth noting — something not obvious from outside the fandom — that the show she’s currently in is a so-called GL (Girls’ Love) drama depicting romance between women, and that the market size and the bar for a sequel differ from BL dramas, making it hard to compare its buzz directly to works in other genres. Among fans, opinions also diverge on how to weigh this latest response, given the long history of the agency putting significant resources behind her dating back to her Morning Musume days.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello!Project) thread “Manety: “Even the Morning Musume director told me Koufuku Shikkaku is a good song. Sayashi’s really been putting in the work. I’ll keep grinding it out, inch by inch.”“

  • Adachi Mitsuru Has Written So Many Hit Manga, He Could Field a Whole Baseball Lineup Out of Just His Classics

A thread on 5ch’s “Whatever Live” board (Nandemo Jikkyo G) blew up over a post pointing out that manga artist Adachi Mitsuru has written enough hit series to field an entire baseball lineup using nothing but his major works. Beyond “Nine,” “Hiatari Ryoukou!” (“Nice Weather!”), and “Rough,” there’s also “Cross Game,” which even got a live-action adaptation — drawing fresh attention to just how long Adachi’s career has spanned, from the 1970s all the way to today. The thread also debated how hard it is to tell the art styles of “Touch,” “Miyuki,” and “Hiatari Ryoukou!” apart, along with the mixed reputations of “Rough” and “Nijiiro Togarashi” (“Rainbow Chili Pepper”). Riding the momentum, other posters jumped in with their own lineups built from the works of Urasawa Naoki and Toriyama Akira.

Cross Game went with the premise of "what if the two leads from H2 went to the same high school," and because of that the games lack a bit of tension — the protagonist's team just feels overwhelmingly safe, and there's a lot of déjà vu with Touch and H2 in the setup and pacing.

    Re: #123
Yep, Shoujo Comic — it ran alongside Kaze to Ki no Uta ("The Poem of Wind and Trees"), which was being serialized there at the same time

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Adachi Mitsuru debuted in the 1970s and has an enormous body of serialized work, headlined by “Touch” and “H2,” alongside “Miyuki,” “Hiatari Ryoukou!,” “Rough,” “Nijiiro Togarashi,” “Cross Game,” and “MIX.” As noted in reply #48, he also holds the distinction of being the first manga artist in Japan to surpass 100 million copies in combined sales of his own works, a milestone reached while Nijiiro Togarashi was still running. Riding the lineup gimmick, posters in the thread also built rosters out of the works of Urasawa Naoki and Toriyama Akira, turning the thread from a joke about one artist into something of a springboard for comparing “which manga artists have enough hits to field a full lineup.” At the same time, opinions split on individual works — over the reputations of “Rough” and “Nijiiro Togarashi,” and over the bittersweet ending of “Miyuki.” Note that part of the thread involved some back-and-forth sniping from one poster insisting that “you have no right to weigh in without mentioning Cross Game”; posts amounting to personal insults have been excluded from this writeup.

  • SoftBank Hawks Move Closer to the Pennant, Fans Flock En Masse to Kyocera Dome — 5ch: ‘Guess a Hometown Championship Toss Wasn’t in the Cards’

On September 17, 2026, SoftBank’s Pacific League pennant became a real possibility, and 5ch’s live-commentary thread lit up. The game was against Orix at Kyocera Dome Osaka — a dead-rubber matchup for the standings, but reports described SoftBank fans packing not just the visitors’ section but the infield seats as well. In the thread, some lamented that a home-turf championship celebration in Fukuoka wouldn’t happen, while others praised the momentum from taking the series against Seibu and sweeping Nippon-Ham. Opinions were split, though, on whether Seibu’s brief run at closing the gap to 5 games really counted as a ‘furious comeback.’

Well, they've got the cushion so it's fine for fine-tuning things
It's not exactly a situation that calls for intensity

    Background and Talking Points

In Japanese pro baseball pennant races, once a dominant team pulls away, the movement of its ‘magic number’ tends to become a hot topic. In the thread, opinions split — turning into a bit of a sarcastic back-and-forth — over whether Seibu’s brief push to close the gap on SoftBank to 5 games really deserved to be called a ‘furious comeback.’ Also, SoftBank’s magic number first appeared on August 6, more than a month before the September 17 championship reports, so the impression that they ‘blew through it in a flash’ isn’t quite accurate. Another topic was the large number of SoftBank fans who traveled from their home base in Fukuoka to the game venue at Kyocera Dome (Osaka) — this comes down to Fukuoka and Osaka being close by domestic-travel standards, under an hour by plane or about three hours by shinkansen. Note that exchanges about Hanshin’s interleague record against top Pacific League teams included posts making sweeping generalizations about specific teams and personal insults, so those replies have been excluded from this article.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “[Good News] SoftBank’s championship looks set to be decided today.”

  • Universities with low entrance-exam scores but strong local reputations spark discussion on 5ch: “Hakuoh University,” “Nihon University’s Faculty of Engineering,” and more

On 5ch’s “Live Everything G” board, a thread was started listing universities that don’t have high hensachi (the standardized deviation scores used to rank Japanese schools) but are known locally for their reputation and strong job placement. Starting with Hakuoh University in Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture, and Nihon University’s Faculty of Engineering in Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, posters introduced one university after another from the Kita-Kanto, Tohoku, and Hokuriku regions, including International University of Health and Welfare, University of Aizu, and Kanazawa Institute of Technology. Partway through, the thread turned into a ranking debate over former Imperial University-tier schools like Tohoku University and Hiroshima University, with opinions split on whether Hiroshima University counts as “quasi-former-Imperial” or ranks below Chiba University.

    Re: #1

    ・Hakuoh University (Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture)

Hensachi isn't high, but it's fairly strong for finding jobs within Tochigi Prefecture.
Also, a lot of schoolteachers in Tochigi are graduates of this place.

Plus, it's right in front of Oyama Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen, so the location's pretty good too.
    4AnonymousSep 17, 2026 19:30

・Nihon University Faculty of Engineering (Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture)

Maybe because it's out in the regions instead of the Tokyo metro area, its hensachi is surprisingly low for a "Nitto-Komasen" school (Nihon, Toyo, Komazawa, Senshu — a well-known tier of mid-level Tokyo-area private universities). (For reference, the School of Science and Technology, which has a higher hensachi, is based in the Tokyo area.)
That said, it seems to be pretty strong for job hunting, probably riding on the Nihon University brand name.

The downsides are that the coursework is tough and it's hard to graduate (the dropout rate is high too), and the location isn't great (it's far from Koriyama Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen)…

Also, Nihon University Tohoku High School is attached to the campus!

    Re: #4
A lot of people get into Nichidai Engineering (Koriyama) on recommendation from technical high schools, but those students tend to have a high rate of repeating a year.
Even though the hensachi isn't high, the level of math and physics is genuinely high, so you won't graduate without actually studying.

To begin with, technical high schools don't cover much math and the like, unlike the science track at regular high schools… (honestly, they're iffy even next to the humanities track at regular high schools).

・International University of Health and Welfare (Otawara, Tochigi Prefecture)

It's fairly tough to graduate from, but job placement within the prefecture is extremely strong. (There's even a rumor it beats the local national university, Utsunomiya University.)
That said, getting into the Pharmacy, Nursing, and Radiological Sciences departments is fairly difficult too.
Also, it's far from Nishi-Nasuno Station (JR Utsunomiya Line) and Nasushiobara Station (Tohoku Shinkansen), so the location isn't exactly great to put it kindly…

*By the way, the School of Medicine is actually located in Narita, Chiba Prefecture.

・Kanazawa Institute of Technology (Nonoichi, Ishikawa Prefecture)

Its hensachi isn't exactly high to put it kindly, but job placement is apparently quite good given that.
That said, some people say they regret enrolling once they're actually in… (the coursework is tough and it's hard to graduate).

・Tohoku University of Community Service and Science (Yamagata Prefecture)

A private university in the Shonai region. But it's actually funded by the various municipalities of Shonai, so it's basically half-public.
Also, it's actually a sister school of Keio University. (And Tsuruoka also hosts a graduate campus of Keio's Science and Engineering department.)

Let me throw in a curveball here!

    ・Tohoku University (Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture)

Its hensachi isn't as high as the former Imperial universities in the three major metro areas (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya) or Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology), but its reputation and research level in the sciences — especially engineering — are genuinely high.

The humanities side, though, isn't exactly strong to put it kindly…
It's not on a level where it can look down on the other regional former Imperial universities (Hokkaido, Kyushu), and it loses to Waseda and Keio as a matter of course.
Honestly, these days it's questionable whether it can even beat Sophia or the GMARCH schools (Gakushuin, Meiji, Aoyama Gakuin, Rikkyo, Chuo, Hosei)…

By the way, Tohoku University isn't even the top humanities school in the Tohoku region.
That's because Akita Prefecture has Akita International University (AIU).

Tohoku University's sciences (especially engineering) are legitimately impressive
*Though its medical/dental/pharmacy programs lose out to Kyushu University and Nagoya University (though Nagoya doesn't even have pharmacy or dentistry schools)

Meanwhile, Tohoku University's humanities side isn't as strong.
The Faculty of Letters in particular loses out in hensachi even to Hokkaido University (which has a strong image as the weakest former Imperial university)
*Though Tohoku University requires math on the second-stage exam even for the Faculty of Letters, while Hokkaido University lets you compete with history/geography instead

By the way, Akita International University (AIU) is an up-and-coming public university in Akita Prefecture.
Its English proficiency is reportedly top-level within Japan.
These days there's even talk that it outranks not just Tohoku University's humanities programs (Sendai, Miyagi) but even Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

For a school that isn't in one of the three major metro areas and doesn't have a long history, that's an impressive showing 👍

    ・Hiroshima University (Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture)

It's not a former Imperial university, but since it's positioned as the flagship school of the Chugoku region, it sometimes gets treated as quasi-Imperial-tier depending on the context.
Historically, it's actually a former University of Literature and Science, putting it on the same footing as Tsukuba University (formerly Tokyo University of Education).

That said, in the medical/dental/pharmacy fields alone, Okayama University — one of the old Six Medical Colleges — clearly outranks it.

Background and key points of this discussion

“Former Imperial universities” (kyu-teikoku daigaku) refers to the seven universities founded before World War II in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Tohoku, Hokkaido, and Kyushu, and debates over their ranking are a perennial topic on 5ch’s academic-background boards. Hiroshima University and Tsukuba University (formerly Tokyo University of Education) come from a separate historical lineage as former “Universities of Literature and Science,” so they aren’t technically former Imperial universities, but their research standing sometimes earns them comparable treatment. That said, hensachi and job-placement strength don’t always line up. Schools like International University of Health and Welfare and Nihon University’s Faculty of Engineering show that universities located away from major cities can still be strong on employment thanks to licensing-focused programs and ties with local employers — a point raised repeatedly in the thread. Note that the hensachi rankings and evaluations in the thread reflect individual posters’ personal impressions, not official statistics or rankings.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Live Everything G) thread “[Academic Background] Big 3: Universities with Low Hensachi but Good Local Reputations — “Hakuoh University,” “Nihon University’s Faculty of Engineering”.”

  • Does Math Still Matter in the AI Era? 5ch Users Are Split

A thread titled “Is there any point in learning math?” blew up on the Nanidemo Jikkyou (nanG) board. It kicked off with a post arguing that since LLMs now outperform mathematicians at math, the whole subject has lost its purpose — and that class time should be shifted to science instead. That drew a wave of pushback: math builds logical thinking, math is a language and a tool you need, and so on. The debate spiraled further into whether AI has actually solved one of the Millennium Prize Problems. In the end, the discussion never quite resolved, with posters talking past each other — some arguing about the ability to solve math itself, others about the ability to use math as a skill taught in school.

    1AnonymousSep 17, 2026 20:17
    Nah, isn't it pointless?
    LLMs killed math.
Since LLMs are better at math than mathematicians now, I think the point of learning math has basically disappeared.

Raw math ability genuinely means nothing anymore.
Thanks to AI, math's only remaining value is as the language of natural science.

What matters is 'the ability to use math as a language.'
That's why math should be cut and that time, scope, and exam weight shifted to science.

    Nah, there is a downside.
No matter how hard you study, AI will still be better at math than any mathematician.

That's exactly why I'm saying it should get more time — folded into science class.
My position is that 'math as a language/tool' should be emphasized even more within science than it is now.

I'm saying 'scrap math class and shift that time into science!'

Replacing that would require at least running AI on quantum computers.

By its very nature, natural science will be the last thing standing.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Millennium Prize Problems, math’s most famous unsolved challenges, remain officially unsolved as of 2026. The claim floated in the thread — that an LLM solved the Navier–Stokes problem in a matter of days — was itself disputed within the same thread, with one poster countering that the AI simply repackaged a researcher’s unpublished idea. In other words, this isn’t an established fact. What AI has actually demonstrated is the ability to solve International Mathematical Olympiad–level problems and assist with parts of proofs — there’s no confirmed case of it independently producing a complete, peer-reviewed proof.

The thread’s real fault line was the distinction between “the ability to solve math itself” and “the ability to use math as a tool or language.” Even granting that the former can be handed off to AI, many pushed back that secondary school math education is exactly where the latter gets built, and that science class alone can’t teach it systematically. Because opinions on the value of the discipline itself and opinions on math’s place in the school curriculum tend to get tangled together, it’s worth keeping track of which argument is actually being made at any given point.

Citing a report from US media, word spread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō G” (Anything-Goes Live) board that Starbucks’ US headquarters is considering selling a majority stake in its Japanese subsidiary. If it goes through, US Starbucks and Starbucks Japan would reportedly become almost entirely separate companies. Commenters speculated that the parent company might be offloading its most profitable unit to cover poor performance back home, drawing comparisons to brands like Mister Donut and Tully’s that withered in the US but thrived in Japan. Others pointed out that this is merely a “sale under consideration,” not a confirmed “withdrawal,” and opinions were split over whether the thread’s title overstated the situation.

This is honestly circulating pretty seriously though

Background and Key Points of This Story

Starbucks Japan has been a wholly owned subsidiary since 2014, when US headquarters bought up all of its shares, so this story is essentially about whether that arrangement is now being unwound. The report is only at the “considering a sale” stage — as commenters noted when the article briefly vanished, no official announcement or follow-up has surfaced yet. Starbucks’ US business has seen ongoing declines in same-store sales, and selling off a profitable overseas subsidiary to raise cash isn’t a new move for a struggling company, but as the thread also questioned, that doesn’t guarantee it actually fixes the slump back home. The thread title’s phrase “decided to withdraw” goes further than what was actually reported, and it’s easy to misread that as more than just a report on a sale under consideration.

  • Shigure Ui Cancels Collab With Girls’ Clothing Brand — 5ch: ‘That Was Taboo’

Popular VTuber Shigure Ui abruptly canceled a collaboration with the girls’ clothing brand “Mezzo Piano,” sparking discussion on 5ch. The cancellation reportedly wasn’t a matter of caving to feminist criticism, but was due to threats made against those involved, including Ui herself. Opinions on the thread were sharply divided — from questions about why a VTuber known for lolicon-adjacent content teamed up with a real girls’ clothing brand in the first place, to condemnation of whoever resorted to threats, to cooler-headed points about whether there was even demand for the collab to begin with.

That's the wrong way to look at it
She's already stuck with the image of a song that riles up so-called "mesugaki" fans (a bratty, provocative young-girl archetype popular in otaku circles), so it doesn't matter how strict she is about regulating lewd fan art
The company that planned this was overwhelmingly thoughtless
    117AnonymousSep 17, 2026 18:21
To begin with, kids' clothing and VTuber otaku seem like polar opposites — does this even make business sense?
There can't be many VTuber fans who also have kids, and demand for it as a collector's buy seems pretty thin too
    127AnonymousSep 17, 2026 18:23
    Re: #117
This VTuber herself is actually pretty popular with young girls, and everything in this line is cheap by the brand's standards — I'd guess they're picturing it as a little reward you buy your kid when she asks for it
    131AnonymousSep 17, 2026 18:24
    Re: #117
Since she's a VTuber popular with kids, this isn't really business aimed at "V-buta" (a derisive term for male VTuber otaku)

Background and Key Points of This Story

What matters most about this cancellation isn’t simply a rise in criticism, but the stated reason: “there were threats made against those involved, including myself.” Projects getting canceled over social media backlash isn’t unusual, but once it escalates into threats or criminal warnings, that’s a different matter entirely — one that could turn into a criminal case. While some on the thread pointed out that “criticism and threats are on completely different levels,” there’s more nuance to the story too: the collab was reportedly announced back in May yet only blew up in September, and past controversies over VTubers’ “loli”-themed expression were brought up as precedent. How much thought the brand actually gave to pairing a real children’s product with this kind of character portrayal can’t be confirmed from the original thread alone.

  • Kuzuha Cast as Marvin in ‘Street Fighter: The Movie’ — 5ch Live Thread Buzzing

In a live-commentary thread that went up on the night of September 17 in 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (anything-goes live-commentary board), participants were having a blast posting cosplay photos back and forth with the running “this is my wife” joke. Amid all that, a post from the official account stole the spotlight: it was announced that Kuzuha, a VTuber from Nijisanji, would voice Interpol agent Marvin in the Japanese dub of the live-action film “Street Fighter: The Movie,” opening October 16. The pairing of a VTuber with a major game-based blockbuster drew reactions from the thread’s regulars too.

    Background and Talking Points

This live-action Street Fighter film is the first since the 1994 movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, based on Capcom’s popular fighting-game series, and opens in theaters worldwide starting October 16. Marvin is a character written as an Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization) agent, and the Japanese dub for the role goes to Kuzuha, a male VTuber who has been with Nijisanji since 2018 and has built a following through gaming streams and singing broadcasts. Casting VTubers in dub roles for major releases has become more common in recent years, and this choice is seen as reflecting an affinity with the film’s game-based source material. The original thread itself followed the scattershot, anything-goes flow typical of a live-commentary board — a steady stream of cosplay photos and on-the-ground event reports — so there weren’t many replies reacting directly to this announcement.
