  • Switch 2 Owners Reveal What They’re Actually Playing — 5ch Users Battle It Out in Report Thread

A thread popped up on 5ch where users who’d bought a Switch 2 started comparing notes on what they were actually playing. The list ranged widely — Momotetsu, Clubhouse Games (Asobi Daizen), Derby Stallion 2, Fantasy Life, Donkey Kong Bananza, a Warriors-style “Musou 2” title, and the Yo-kai Watch 1 remake — and the conversation quickly turned to whether any of it really needed a Switch 2 at all. Anyone who mentioned games also available on PS5 or PC, like No Man’s Sky or Musou 2, got hit with a wave of “just play it on PC” and “PS5 is fine for that,” exposing a split between people who bought the console purely for Zelda and Monster Hunter and are letting it collect dust, and those who are actually putting hours in.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nintendo’s Switch 2 launched in 2025 as the company’s current console, and its lineup mixes carryover flagship franchises like Mario Kart with brand-new exclusives such as Donkey Kong Bananza, alongside multiplatform titles like Fantasy Life and the Musou series that are also available on Steam and PS5. The thread split between posters who say the real reason to own a Switch 2 is to wait for flagship titles like Zelda and Monster Hunter, and those who argue everything else runs just as well on PS5 or PC. A number of posters admitted they’d bought the console but were leaving it on the shelf until a true must-have exclusive shows up. What’s easy to miss from the outside is that most of the games named in the thread aren’t Switch 2 exclusives at all — they’re playable on other platforms too — so there’s a real gap between people’s reason for buying the console and what they’re actually playing on it.

*This article is compiled and summarized from excerpts of the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “[Sad News] The Games I’ve Actually Played Since Buying My Switch 2 lol.”

  • Director Hideo Kojima Won’t Reveal Anything About New Game ‘OD’ — 5ch: ‘He’s Just Doing the Same Thing as P.T.’

On episode 36 of the radio show “Koji10,” released October 5, director Hideo Kojima spoke about his new horror title “OD,” currently in development. “OD” was announced in 2023 as a Microsoft-backed project, and while some cast members and teaser footage have already been revealed, most of the game’s content remains unknown — Kojima reportedly stated his policy is to “stay quiet and keep it a mystery” for now. On 5ch’s console-war (gaming industry) board, opinions were split over whether this is a repeat of the free-demo strategy that made “P.T.” such a sensation, or simply a sign that the budget or production is running behind schedule. Some pointed out that filming won’t even start until the end of the year, and that the SAG-AFTRA strike over motion-capture actors may be a factor.

Hideo Kojima, director at Kojima Productions, commented on his new horror title “OD,” currently in development, during episode 36 of “Koji10: Hideo Kojima’s ‘Let’s Make It the Best 10 O’Clock,’” released on October 5.

“Koji10” is a radio show that aired on TBS Radio. A year after Season 2 ended, episode 36 was released as a one-night-only revival episode on YouTube and other platforms.

During the show, Kojima also touched on his new horror game “OD,” among other topics. “OD” was announced in 2023, but with only some cast members, screenshots, and teaser footage revealed so far, it remains shrouded in mystery.

That's something a sub-1,000-yen (about $7) indie game gets to say, not a AAA title like this.
    8AnonymousOct 6, 2026 10:06
He just wants to pull the same trick as P.T., doesn't he.
That one also disguised itself as an obscure indie game and suddenly dropped a demo out of nowhere — you couldn't even clear it without players pooling info online, and it blew up massively because of that.
    58AnonymousOct 6, 2026 11:33
    Re: #8
P.T. was free though, wasn't it.
If this is a paid game, people will have to pay money just to play it, so it won't work the same way.

Wasn't "Silent Hills" cancelled because they poured too much money and time into making P.T. in the first place?
They made a free teaser packed with promotion for the real project, it got rave reviews, and then about six months later the real project got cancelled — that's some dark history right there.

He's practically bragged that the pitch was so out-there at the initial announcement that only Microsoft was willing to fund it, so I wouldn't even be shocked if what comes out barely qualifies as a game.

Honestly, going by the footage and images that have leaked out, there's a real chance it's basically just P.T. all over again.

Seriously, stop — this is a completely bad move.
From years of watching this stuff, what actually helps sell a game on Steam is getting piled up with wishlist adds and staying on people's radar.
The method is simple: put out a good trailer, 'keep the Steam store page up for a long time,' and just let it sit.
Wishlist adds accumulate over the years.
Almost all the top games on SteamDB's current wishlist rankings are games that have had a store page up for years.

PHYSINT is still in pre-production (the preparation stage), so nothing's been made yet for that one, but OD already finished motion capture and even put out a gameplay teaser last year, so it's not accurate to say nothing's been made.
    63AnonymousOct 6, 2026 11:39
'We want to keep it under wraps' sounds nice, but really they probably just don't have the money.
All the flashy promotion and events up to now were being funded by Sony.
This guy's whole approach has been selling games through that kind of spectacle, so it's going to be rough once he can't do that anymore.
Even Death Stranding, which had Sony babysitting it, ended up like that.

    Re: #67
Motion capture shoots normally use actors who specialize in mocap work.
The strike in question was specifically a strike by those kinds of actors who work in the game industry.
There are probably a lot of still-unannounced titles, but I'd bet other publishers' games that had mocap shoots scheduled around the same time are also quietly adjusting their release plans behind the scenes.
    78AnonymousOct 6, 2026 12:06
Motion capture actors could just as well be done with Japanese talent — this is exactly why the overseas-inferiority-complex crowd (Japanese fans who overvalue Western production) are like this…

Background and Key Points of Discussion

“OD” is a new Microsoft-backed title announced at a 2023 Xbox event, with a funding structure different from the Sony-led “Death Stranding.” The thread’s central debate was whether Kojima’s secrecy this time follows the same playbook as his past stunt with the free demo “P.T.” at the PlayStation Experience — which became a massive buzz-generating success — or whether it’s simply a sign that the budget or production schedule has fallen behind. The fact that filming won’t even begin until the end of the year has also been linked to the effects of the SAG-AFTRA strike over AI protections (2024–2025), which affected actors’ motion-capture shoots, suggesting broader industry-wide circumstances may be at play rather than a simple production delay. Opinions aren’t unanimous on whether a drip-feed information strategy is even effective, either — some argue that early trailer releases and long-term store page exposure are what actually boost Steam wishlist numbers.

  • Wolverine’s Resale Price Crashes Below ¥2,000 Just 3 Weeks After Launch — Fans Call It the ‘Fastest Drop Ever’

The buyback (used-game trade-in) price for Marvel’s Wolverine reportedly fell from ¥5,500 to ¥4,000 within just 10 days of release, and by the three-week mark, retail chains GEO and BookOff had slashed their prices to ¥2,000 and ¥2,500 respectively, according to a report on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board. “Bikane” — the nickname for a recent game that had previously held the record for fastest-crashing buyback price — took five weeks to hit ¥2,000, but Wolverine beat that mark in just three weeks, sparking talk of a new “fastest drop ever.” Thread replies raised complaints about the game’s lack of content and abundance of bugs, comparisons with other titles released around the same time, and mentions of how much unsold stock is still sitting in stores.

    Background and Talking Points

How fast a used-game buyback price falls is an indicator of how worried retailers are about getting stuck with unsold stock — it doesn’t directly reflect how many copies a game has actually sold. On the Geha (Hardware/Industry) board, comparing how quickly a new release’s buyback price crashes — as seen before with titles like Monster Hunter Wilds and “Bikane” — has become a recurring topic, and this Wolverine discussion is just the latest example. Commenters pointed to the game’s CERO Z rating (restricted to ages 18 and up in Japan) as one reason it’s hard to bundle into things like New Year’s grab-bag sets, which in turn makes retailers reluctant to buy it back. That said, it’s worth noting that the sales and inventory figures cited in the thread are secondhand claims from posters, not confirmed official data from sources like Famitsu.

  • Kato Konatsu’s Viewers Drop After Switching From PS5 to Switch 2 — 5ch: “They Were Already Falling During Silent Hill”

Actress and TV personality Kato Konatsu’s debut episode playing the new PS5 horror title “Silent Hill f” on her gaming channel racked up 6.2 million views — but when she switched to streaming “Rhythm Heaven” on Nintendo’s new Switch 2 hardware, her viewer count dropped sharply, and the topic got picked up on 5ch’s hardware/industry (geha) board. Rather than simply chalking it up to a difference in hardware popularity, the thread pointed out that Silent Hill f’s own viewership had already been declining as the playthrough went on, with the dominant theory being that the real driver was the fading novelty of “a woman playing hardcore horror on stream” that fueled the first episode’s buzz. Still, there was some disagreement over how to read the actual trend in the view counts.

It's entertaining when an actress plays something she's actually starred in and shares behind-the-scenes stories within what she's allowed to say — but for any other game, if it's not fun on raw skill alone, the views just won't grow.

Still, if you ask which one actually helps sell the game, it's definitely Rhythm Heaven.

Same as esports — it's just a flood of something that isn't real paying customers watching for free, so the number means nothing, and you can tell clearly from the fact the game itself flopped.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Actress and TV personality Kato Konatsu also streams game playthroughs, and the first episode of her new PS5 horror title “Silent Hill f” pulled in a massive 6.2 million views. The thread focused on how that number dropped sharply once she switched to streaming the Switch 2 version of “Rhythm Heaven,” but the discussion wasn’t simply a “PS5 vs. Switch 2” face-off. Several posts noted that Silent Hill f’s own view counts had already fallen to around 200,000 by its later episodes, suggesting the bigger factor wasn’t the hardware switch itself but the fading novelty of the first episode’s hook — “a woman playing hardcore horror on stream.” At the same time, some pushed back on citing “200,000 views for Silent Hill” as a misleading spin, so opinions remain split on how to read the actual numbers. Readers could easily get the wrong impression from the thread title alone — that it’s simply “unpopular because it’s Switch 2” — but in fact many pointed out that viewership had already been trending downward back during Silent Hill f itself, making this a more nuanced debate than hardware differences alone can explain.

  • Switch 2’s “Choose Your Game” Bundle Launches in November — 5ch: “Typical Lord Nintendo”

Nintendo has announced the “Nintendo Switch 2 Choose Your Game Set,” launching November 12, 2026, at a suggested retail price of 63,980 yen (tax included). Buyers can pick one title from Mario Kart World, Tomodachi Collection, or Nintendo Switch Sports Resort — a different lineup from the North American version (Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Bananza, and a Pokémon title). On the thread, opinions split: some pointed out that launch-day buyers effectively lost out on 10,000 yen, and others criticized the bundling practice for squeezing out individual game sales at retail, while some offered an analysis suggesting the domestic lineup differs from overseas because Pokémon-series titles’ weekly sales are too weak to anchor the bundle.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nintendo announced the “Nintendo Switch 2 (Japanese language, Japan-only) Choose Your Game Set,” launching November 12, 2026, priced at 63,980 yen (tax included). In North America, buyers choose from three titles — Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and a Pokémon title (the Pokémon Pokopoko series) — but the Japanese version swaps this out for Mario Kart World, Tomodachi Collection, and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. On the thread, some pointed to domestic Pokémon-series titles’ weekly sales of only around 2,600 units as too weak to drive the bundle, while others argued Tomodachi Collection has strong appeal among families and on social media; still, many expressed frustration, asking why Japan didn’t just match the overseas lineup. Criticism of the bundling practice itself was also a major talking point — that it squeezes out customers who’d buy games individually, and that it makes launch-day buyers pay more overall. One detail easy to miss in the original announcement is that the download code’s expiration date is as early as the end of March 2027 — a fairly short window worth keeping in mind when weighing the set’s value.

  • Sony’s new handheld ‘PSP3’ rumored to hit 11.5TFLOPS when docked — 5ch: ‘Bankruptcy incoming, lol’

Overseas outlet sumahodigest has published new details on Sony’s reportedly in-development next-gen handheld, the “PSP3.” The device is said to pack a custom chip called “Kynis,” built on TSMC’s N3P process, and GPU performance is claimed to reach up to 11.5TFLOPS when connected to a dedicated dock. The figure sparked buzz for surpassing the PS5’s 10.28TFLOPS, but the thread debated whether that number is a theoretical peak that includes “Dual Issue” throughput, as well as speculation that the console could be priced at $999 (roughly ¥160,000). With no official announcement yet, the flurry of competing leaks also drew plenty of skepticism about where the information was even coming from.

Regarding the PSP 3, reportedly being developed by Sony as its next-generation handheld game console, the possibility has emerged that its docked performance could far exceed previous estimates. According to the latest calculations, the custom “Kynis” chip, built on TSMC’s N3P process, is said to allow GPU performance to reach up to 11.5TFLOPS when connected to the dock.

Given how much memory prices have spiked lately, 256GB was probably the right call 😁

If they'd packed in 512GB/1TB, the price hike would've blown past ¥20,000 😨

Background and key points of debate

Leak stories like this one are often published by overseas specialty outlets based on speculation, and Sony has yet to make any official announcement. TFLOPS figures represent the theoretical peak of the compute units, and the number changes significantly depending on whether “Dual Issue” (processing two operations per cycle) is factored in — which is why the thread flagged that it can’t simply be compared to the PS5’s 10.28TFLOPS. Handheld hardware tends to cost more to miniaturize than home consoles, pushing prices up, while domestic sales of handheld hardware have historically lagged behind home consoles (the PSP sold around 19.69 million units, and the PS Vita around 5.86 million). That underlying question of whether to prioritize handheld or home-console hardware as the core product strategy is what’s really driving both the price debate and the ‘should it just be treated as a secondary device’ reactions.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Good News] Media: ‘PSP 3 Reportedly Reaches 11.5TFLOPS When Docked, Surpassing PS5’.”

  • Developer: “Digital downloads are mainstream now — physical copies have lower margins and are on a declining trend”

A game developer, posting on X (formerly Twitter), said they’re “not against physical copies” while laying out the industry’s current reality: “Digital downloads are mainstream now, and physical copies have a lower profit margin than digital, so they’re on a declining trend.” The remark sparked a wide-ranging debate on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board over whether digital downloads actually benefit users at all, and what gets lost if physical copies disappear. Posters traded concrete points — not having to visit a store, questions about storage space, and shrinking shelf space at retailers — with opinions splitting sharply between the digital camp and the physical camp.

Did people maybe take that as me being anti-physical? I’m not against it at all. I’m just explaining the current reality — digital downloads are mainstream right now, and physical copies have a lower profit margin than digital, so they’re on a declining trend. Given that reality and where things are headed, all I can do is my best within it.

But everyone still wants to release them anyway because the benefits outweigh that cost.
I'm not denying digital has gone mainstream, but the moment something goes digital-only, it gets buried under the mountain of other digital titles and stops selling.
So they end up running sales nonstop — unit sales might go up, but profit doesn't.

    Re: #94
They're not releasing it physically, though.
Even for Capcom, their best-selling platform — PC — is digital-only.

Background and key points of this discussion

The spread of digital downloads has been driven by improved home-console internet infrastructure and the stay-at-home demand following the COVID-19 pandemic; for publishers, digital versions make it easier to protect margins since they avoid retail cuts and distribution costs. Users, meanwhile, benefit from being able to resell or trade in used copies, get refunds, and play without an internet connection — and in the thread, posters raised physical copies and the used-game market as a “hedge against buying a dud.” However, Steam’s refund system is a PC-specific feature; consoles like PlayStation and Switch have no equivalent, so the claim that “you can get refunds on digital too” doesn’t hold the same way across every platform — a mismatch that kept the discussion talking past itself. The shrinking of retail shelf space is also tied to changes in retailers’ own store strategies, and can’t be explained by publishers’ intentions alone.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “Developer: “Digital downloads are mainstream now — physical copies have a lower profit margin than digital and are on a declining trend”.”

  • Masahiro Sakurai Dines With Gaming’s Biggest Names — 5ch Erupts

Masahiro Sakurai posted a photo on X of a dinner with ten renowned game developers — Kazutaka Kodaka, Yoko Taro, Toby Fox, Shinji Mikami, Hideki Kamiya, Goichi Suda, Keiichiro Toyama, Jiro Ishii, and Fumito Ueda — describing it as “an Avengers-style gathering of game directors.” On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, users pointed out that the lineup closely matches the judging panel for the “Japan Game Awards 2026 Game Designers Award,” fueling speculation that this wasn’t just a casual dinner but an awards-related meeting. The discussion soon spread beyond the dinner itself, touching on each person’s recent track record, the notable absence of anyone from Nintendo, and frustration with an industry recognition structure that seems to spotlight directors above all else.

In most cases, a talented person can only actually make use of that talent if they're lucky enough to have a good mentor and environment, and if they put in the effort too.
So if a mentor doesn't have a good eye for talent, all they end up doing is stuffing knowledge and know-how into someone mediocre.
And when that mediocre person then tries to add their own originality, they just end up ruining everything the mentor taught them — and their mediocrity shows right through.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The thread largely split into two points of contention. The first was speculation that this gathering wasn’t just a casual dinner but a face-to-face meeting of the judges for the “Japan Game Awards 2026 Game Designers Award,” with CESA’s official awards page cited as supporting evidence (it was also noted that this would be the award’s final year). The second was frustration with the game industry’s recognition structure itself — why it’s always the people labeled “directors” or “creators” who get the spotlight, while the programmers and designers working on the same projects rarely get their achievements acknowledged. The fact that Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and others never appear in this kind of gathering also became a talking point, though it’s worth noting the thread never got past speculation as to why.

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board, discussion ranged from the backlash Nintendo faced for selling Mario Kart World at $80, to the structural issue of hardware and GPU performance races driving up development costs, to whether 4K graphics are even necessary.

“We want GTA 6 to lead the charge on raising game prices”—”We’ve run out of options” amid soaring development costs… says Kingdom Come developer’s co-founder

Martin Klima, co-founder of Warhorse Studios, developer of the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, has drawn attention after telling PC Gamer in an interview that he wants Grand Theft Auto VI (hereafter GTA 6) to take the lead in raising game prices.

“I hope GTA paves the way.”

Yeah, Nintendo got mocked relentlessly for selling Mario Kart at $80.

They're the ones who jacked up development costs themselves—are they stupid?

But it launches riddled with bugs and goes on 50% sale within a year.

Won't DLSS5 help curb the rising dev costs? Though graphics seem to be hitting a ceiling too.

    17AnonymousOct 6, 2026 00:06
They should be complaining to the hardware makers instead—"we already have enough power." Every time hardware evolves, dev costs go up with it, and it's not going to stop.
    35AnonymousOct 6, 2026 00:52
    Re: #17
That's something you should've said to the GPU makers lol. And the GPU makers themselves hit a wall hyping resolution, so now they've moved on to AI as their next hustle lol.

They always say that better hardware performance will make development cheaper, though…
    27AnonymousOct 6, 2026 00:26

Funny thing is, these are the same people who defended Nintendo when they raised prices.
    31AnonymousOct 6, 2026 00:38
In Japan game prices don't really become a big issue, but in places like America it really blows up. Nintendo got flooded with "drop the prices" comments on videos too.
    33AnonymousOct 6, 2026 00:43
    Re: #31
In Japan people just quietly stop buying instead. In fact, "sale beggars" and "video beggars" (people who just watch playthroughs instead of buying) are on the rise, and students have basically switched to just playing mobile games.
    34AnonymousOct 6, 2026 00:47
Honestly it's kind of dumb for Americans to complain about a small price hike on games—current prices are already absurdly cheap because companies can barely raise them. And then on top of that they get mad about layoffs and studio closures. It really doesn't add up.
    57AnonymousOct 6, 2026 01:37
    Re: #34
Food costs in America are insanely high, so there's no money left over for entertainment.
    36AnonymousOct 6, 2026 00:57
4K is seriously unnecessary. They should just make games at FHD-level graphics and PS4-scale ambition.
    38AnonymousOct 6, 2026 01:01
    Re: #36
If you're making that level of game on PS5 hardware, you wouldn't even need optimization costs, so it'd be cheaper than back in the PS4 era. But honestly, if that level of game is fine, indie devs can make it nowadays and sell it for under $10 anyway—so it wouldn't be profitable for a studio with a full staff to make it.
    56AnonymousOct 6, 2026 01:29
    Re: #36
Even at FHD, this generation's graphics are way better anyway.
    47AnonymousOct 6, 2026 01:13
Why aren't game prices rising even though there's inflation overseas?

    Because it's not America.
    53AnonymousOct 6, 2026 01:24
They should just make games more fun than solo indie devs can 🤣
    87AnonymousOct 6, 2026 03:55
    Re: #53
The indie games you and I usually see online or in videos are just a tiny fraction of standout hits. Over 90% of indie games are either super-degraded ripoffs of whatever's popular, or on the level of obscure crap games from the '90s.
    89AnonymousOct 6, 2026 04:01
    Re: #87
You're talking like standout hits among major-studio games aren't also a tiny fraction. Well, whatever, Re: #53's point wasn't really about sheer numbers anyway.
    59AnonymousOct 6, 2026 01:41
Raising the list price seems pointless if it still only sells during sales. If a GTA-class title kept its price high, that'd be great for other publishers—but Rockstar actually strikes me as the type to run sales aggressively.
    66AnonymousOct 6, 2026 02:13
    Re: #59
If the list price goes up, then even a 30% or 50% off sale ends up costing more than before. 50% off an ¥8,000 game is ¥4,000, but 50% off a ¥10,000 game is ¥5,000. So the whole market price range shifts upward, sales included.
    60AnonymousOct 6, 2026 01:43
The fact that Wolverine's water and lava effects are getting savaged already tells you there's no future here. Try to raise prices, you get a "drop the price" movement; try to cut corners to save on man-hours, and outlets like Digital Foundry zoom in and tear you apart for it. It's a dead end. Studios that can't keep up will just fall behind.
    68AnonymousOct 6, 2026 02:21
    Re: #60
Wolverine's quality level deserves the criticism though—you shouldn't be shipping something like that lol.
    76AnonymousOct 6, 2026 02:53
    Re: #60
Do you not get that the premise behind all the criticism of Wolverine is the fact that it cost $300 million? "You spent a huge budget and it still looks shoddy" and "you want to spend a huge budget but the profitability is shaky" are two completely different arguments.
    67AnonymousOct 6, 2026 02:17
To put it bluntly, something like Kairosoft or Kemco's model is fine—a budget that matches the company's size, releasing regularly without big gaps, at a consistent quality level. Even if the games are all similar, they're genuinely enjoyable, and they've got a solid fanbase, so they sell steadily.
    95AnonymousOct 6, 2026 04:23
    Re: #67
Even if Kairosoft or Kemco games are genuinely enjoyable, the question is whether you'd actually choose them over other games. Only a small core of diehard fans would do that. Isn't that exactly why Kairosoft started using licensed characters like Fujiko Fujio's or Kochikame's? In reality, anyone outside the core fanbase had already gotten tired of them.
    72AnonymousOct 6, 2026 02:38
You should really question why required specs and dev costs keep rising even though graphics haven't really changed in the last decade lol. And if pouring effort into pointless stuff like 4K ends up producing linear, cutscene-heavy games like Wolverine or FF16, that's just games regressing.
    84AnonymousOct 6, 2026 03:42
    Re: #72
Sounds like something you'd say after watching a low-res gameplay video on a tiny phone screen without actually playing it. Cherry-picking only linear games as examples because you want to bash 4K games—are you trolling?
    81AnonymousOct 6, 2026 03:10
If they just stopped obsessing over graphics, they could probably cut costs by half, easy.
    85AnonymousOct 6, 2026 03:47
    Re: #81
It was the users who started demanding better graphics in the first place. And conversely, it's also the users who demand pixel art while just assuming pixel art is "easy" and only pushing for cheapness.
    86AnonymousOct 6, 2026 03:52
It's simple—just lower development costs. If they built games at Switch 2-level specs, it'd cover a wide range of PC specs too. Maybe they're just not thinking it through.
    93AnonymousOct 6, 2026 04:09
    Re: #86
Even at "Switch 2 level," if it's a later multiplatform release of a big-budget PS4/PS5 title, the development cost is already pretty high. DLC and season passes started back in the PS3/Xbox 360 era precisely because, even then, the budgets already called for a list price over ¥10,000. And users came to expect that level of quality as a given, too.
    98AnonymousOct 6, 2026 04:43
GTA is just data at the end of the day. Also, 4K really isn't necessary.
    100AnonymousOct 6, 2026 06:06
    Re: #98
If they dropped 4K, development costs probably wouldn't climb nearly as much.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The soaring cost of game development has become a shared challenge across the industry in recent years, with production costs for big-budget titles continuing to balloon alongside advances in graphics and open-world design. When Nintendo released Switch 2 titles like Mario Kart World at $80, backlash against the price hike was strong in North America, while in Japan the tendency noted was quieter—people simply refraining from buying rather than protesting openly. In the thread, discussion shifted from whether the price hike itself was justified to the “root cause of rising development costs,” with some blaming the performance race among hardware and GPU makers, and others pointing out that DLC and season passes originated back in the PS3/Xbox 360 generation—making for a structural debate that couldn’t be reduced to simple right-or-wrong.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Kingdom Come developer: “Development costs have risen too much, we’ve hit our limit—we want GTA 6 to lead the charge and raise game prices”.”

  • VTuber Questions Why Game Streaming Needs Permission — 5ch Asks: “What Was the Point of Buying It?”

A VTuber’s remark — “Why does game streaming even need permission? What was the point of buying it?” — sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board. Commenters repeatedly pointed out that what streamers buy is the “right to play” the software, not the “right to broadcast” it. The thread also brought up the Niconico era, when streaming in open defiance of terms of service was rampant, as well as the current system where rights holders are notified the moment a stream goes live, letting them demonetize or take it down almost instantly. Opinions were split on whether streaming hurts sales and on whether a permission system is justified in the first place.

    Exactly.
Or they should build a system where only people who bought the game can see the same screen as the streamer.

Is it really necessary when you're not even broadcasting the video or audio?

Even if there's no legal issue,
getting permission anyway leaves a better impression with the rights holder,
and it can lead to sponsored work down the line.
    83AnonymousOct 5, 2026 18:16
Publishers never sold the right to stream in the first place.
A permission system makes total sense — otherwise unrelated third parties just rake in profit without giving anything back to the publisher.
    85AnonymousOct 5, 2026 18:23
    Re: #83
In B2B, a permission system is standard practice.
Setting aside tiny individual streamers, the popular ones run themselves as registered sole proprietors, and agency VTubers are backed by actual companies — so even more reason.
    86AnonymousOct 5, 2026 18:29
Up until around 2020, people ignored the terms of service and streamed illegally without a second thought.
Even now there are people with a "if I don't get caught it's fine, I'll just delete it if I do" attitude, so they should crack down harder.
    87AnonymousOct 5, 2026 18:35
    Re: #86
Nowadays, the moment you start streaming, the rights holder gets notified automatically.
So if they feel like it, they can zero out the stream's monetization or get it taken down almost instantly.
    89AnonymousOct 5, 2026 18:47
Most people probably follow the rules, but if you're making income off a game, maybe they should collect usage fees like JASRAC does. (JASRAC is Japan's music-royalty collection agency)
Squeeze the big earners and major companies for money, and go easy on small-time streamers who just do it for fun without ads.
At the end of the day, streamers have nothing left once you take away the "game commentary" card.
    95AnonymousOct 5, 2026 20:15
    Re: #89
If anything, publishers are the ones paying streamers for promotion lol. Your thinking's completely backwards, it's hilarious — what era are you even living in?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan has no fair-use provision like the United States does, so the underlying premise is that game streaming is only permitted within the bounds of the individual “guidelines” each publisher sets. While many major publishers allow non-commercial use, a system is now in place where rights holders are notified the instant a stream begins, letting them demonetize or remove it almost immediately. The thread was split between the view that “people satisfied by watching a playthrough weren’t going to buy the game anyway” and the view that “whether or not a playthrough exists changes the publisher’s revenue opportunities.” Some commenters were also surprised to learn that even formats like screen-free watch-alongs are sometimes expected to get permission first.
