  • X: “Nintendo’s Download Versions Barely Sell At All — Not Even 10%”

A claim posted on X (formerly Twitter) — that “Nintendo’s download versions barely sell at all, with the ratio coming in at under 10%” — sparked discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (commonly known as “Geha”). In the thread, users pointed out that Nintendo’s published digital ratio of roughly 50% excludes digital-exclusive titles, while Sony’s figure in the 80% range includes them — highlighting a difference in how the two companies count their numbers. Opinions were divided over the credibility of the original post, as well as over the point that physical sales volume and the digital ratio are two separate issues.

They probably haven't even read what Nintendo actually published.
    3AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:31
Sounds like Nintendo actually sells more digital than Sony does…
then again, that's just their 'manufactured shortage' marketing.
    5AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:33
Even if that were true, it wouldn't matter — physical media is getting discontinued and vanishing from store shelves either way.
    7AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:34
There must have been tons of cases where an indie series kept getting steady sequels through 3DS digital releases, but got dropped after just one Vita port.
So where's the evidence that the share flips completely once you're talking about 'the digital version' instead of 'digital-exclusive'?
    9AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:36
Is there even a Japanese third-party game that's sold more digital copies in Japan than Animal Crossing: New Horizons?
    12AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:38
It's basically a religion at this point — the worst part is they don't even consider that they might be wrong.
    13AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:38
If it's really under 10%, you'd expect an even bigger gap to show up — so are we saying it's more than a 10x difference?
    14AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:40
Is this, in a way, just another case of 'net de shinjitsu' ("internet truth" — a claim that spreads as fact online because people want to believe it)?
    15AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:41
They always bring up 'but look at the earnings' — but hasn't Sony only beaten Nintendo in full-year operating profit two or three times in the last decade?
    18AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:43
That's just Rento talking (a Twitter personality known for dubious gaming claims) — make sure the thread title keeps calling him an 'expert' (said sarcastically).

A perfect example of what happens when you're high on PlayStation fanboyism.
Tough break for the sane PS fans — having users like this around makes even the normal ones get lumped in with the crazies.

At least domestically, even if Wolverine's digital ratio were 90% and FE's were 50%, FE would still have sold more overall.
    (Wolverine: 220k, FE: 300k)

Even if FE's digital ratio were only 25%, FE would still barely come out ahead — so the percentage going up doesn't automatically mean anything.

    Nintendo's 50% digital ratio excludes digital-exclusive titles.
    Sony's 80% includes digital-exclusive titles.

Sony is already counting things in a way designed to inflate the digital ratio, and even then, claiming a 90% digital ratio is a flat-out lie lol.

Nobody in any camp discloses clear digital numbers, so everyone gets to spin it however suits them.
Meanwhile, the publishers — who obviously know their own real sales figures — just keep doing whatever they're doing…

Even the adult doujin platforms (FANZA and DLsite) manage to publish real sales figures, so other platforms should be able to do it too.

    Exactly this kind of thinking.

    82AnonymousOct 8, 2026 16:40

In other words, almost nobody is actually playing Nintendo games.

    88AnonymousOct 8, 2026 16:57
Honestly, this whole mindset feels kind of outdated…
People treat 'digital' like it's something special, so a high digital ratio = impressive — and that leads to bashing whoever has a lower one (regardless of whether it's actually low or not)…
    97AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:17
    Re: #88
It's not that deep a topic.
It started when PlayStation fans, getting crushed in the Famitsu weekly sales charts, began saying 'but it sells on digital!' — basically just denial and excuse-making.
There's no guarantee that shifting to digital is inevitable, and no proof it's even the 'right' direction.
    102AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:24
Besides, Nintendo publishes shipment numbers by country, so comparing those against Famitsu's weekly charts should give you a rough digital ratio.
It's not like a game is secretly selling millions while sitting outside the rankings.
    103AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:27
    Re: #102
That approach has its own problems though.
Switch has these landmark indie 'physical' releases that skew the overall digital ratio.
Suika Game (Watermelon Game), for instance, is almost entirely digital.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Nintendo publishes its own digital sales ratio in a way that excludes digital-exclusive titles, with the most recent figure coming in at roughly 50%. Sony’s cited “80% digital ratio,” on the other hand, includes digital-exclusive titles, so the two numbers can’t be directly compared due to their different scopes. The source of the “under 10%” claim raised in the thread was never specified, and many commenters questioned the credibility of the person it was attributed to, making the truthfulness of the post itself a central point of debate. The thread also noted that strong physical sales figures and a low digital ratio across the overall software lineup aren’t necessarily the same thing — and since neither company discloses its exact counting methodology, either number is hard to verify.

  • Kingdom Hearts Collection Launches Today on Switch 2 — 5ch Reacts: ‘There’s No Way to Follow the Story’

Kingdom Hearts Collection [I-III] launched today on Nintendo Switch 2. The set bundles four entries — 1.5, 2.5, 2.8, and 3 — into a capstone package for the series, set across the worlds of Disney and Pixar. On the forum, many pointed out that the three main-numbered titles alone aren’t enough to follow the series’ tangled story, which also sprawls across GBA and mobile spin-offs. Reports of control issues on the PS5 version, along with renewed criticism of past overseas releases that kept Japan’s button layout, also became talking points.

    62AnonymousOct 8, 2026 12:21
    Re: #60

    — Why '2.8'?

Nomura: There are several layers of meaning behind it, but for one way of thinking about it: the 'KH3D [Dream Drop Distance]' (hereafter 'KH3D') included this time as 'KHDDD' is positioned as the work that comes after '2.5' — the previous HD compilation — so it's equivalent to '2.6.'

And we consider the 'χ' series — 'KHχ,' 'KH Unchained χ,' and 'KHχ Back Cover' — to be the '0,' since Sora is absent from them.

'KH BbS' is '0.1,' and this time's 'KH 0.2 BbS,' as the title itself suggests, is '0.2.'

    So if you add '2.6' + '0' + '0.2,' you get the number '2.8.'

    75AnonymousOct 8, 2026 12:40
    Re: #74
    1 and 2 are included within 1.5 and 2.5

Background and Key Points of Discussion

The Kingdom Hearts series is known for weaving HD remasters and spin-offs like ‘1.5,’ ‘2.5,’ and ‘2.8’ in between its main numbered entries, and this collection is effectively another bundle of ‘1.5 + 2.5 + 2.8 + 3.’ What split opinion on the forum was whether this release alone lets players grasp the full story — since it doesn’t include the GBA, PSP, DS, 3DS, and mobile titles, many argued that ‘the main entries alone make it impossible to understand.’ Meanwhile, for the PS5 version, users cited a separate thread started around the same time reporting ‘control issues,’ and the conversation also revisited past criticism of overseas releases that kept Japan’s button layout. One post claimed the Switch 2 version was outranking the PS5 version on Amazon’s bestseller chart, but it’s worth noting that’s just a snapshot at the time of posting, not official sales data.

  • Is Character Creation a Waste of Time? 5ch Weighs In: ‘It’s the Best Part’

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board claims that creating your own protagonist (character creation, or “kyakuri”) in games is a “waste of time.” The original poster argued that changing your character’s looks is pointless if it doesn’t affect in-game reactions or stats. That set off a head-on clash between posters who said it lets them “get immersed” or “become their own self-insert hero,” and those who countered that a dedicated protagonist carefully designed around the story looks better and that character creation dilutes individuality. The debate expanded into direct comparisons with specific titles like Monster Hunter, Elden Ring, Sekiro, and The Witcher.

    1AnonymousOct 8, 2026 12:00
    Doesn't affect the game anyway.

    Re: #80
Even if you do that, it has zero effect on the game.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Character creation for game protagonists is now a standard feature in open-world RPGs and action games, with some titles letting players adjust dozens of parameters—skin tone, body type, facial features, and more. What split the thread was whether to view character creation as “a tool that deepens immersion” or “an element that dilutes the finished product.” The pro camp prioritizes ease of roleplay and self-projection, while the anti camp holds that a dedicated character optimized for the story and visuals looks better and carries more weight. Points like the game addressing you with generic terms such as “you,” and the fact that changing your appearance doesn’t affect stats or how other characters react, reflect a design philosophy that prioritizes “giving players freedom” over integrating the character into the narrative. Criticism of political correctness and comparisons to mods also came up, but those are worth treating as separate issues from the merits of character creation itself.

  • PS5 Games Go Effectively Free on a Piracy Store — 5ch: ‘This Is Just Straight-Up Crime’

On X (formerly Twitter), a post claiming that a “pirate store” offering every PS5 and PS4 game for free had been created went viral, sparking a thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. Posters brought up past precedents — PSP’s modchips and custom firmware (CFW), and the PS3 hack that stemmed from a leaked encryption key — and suggested this latest exploit works the same way, abusing a vulnerability in the console’s built-in firmware browser. Opinions split between optimists who think bans and legal action can contain the damage, and pessimists who argue that once a console’s hardware is cracked, there’s no putting the genie back in the bottle.

    >The developers have built stores for PS5 and PS4 where every single game is free.

This is seriously way too messed up

Something’s gotta be done or PlayStation is going to be finished way sooner than expected

It's an issue that comes before encryption even enters the picture —
apparently it uses a vulnerability in the browser built into the firmware

Even if you add up all the personal info leaks people are making noise about now, it'd be a close match

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This isn’t the first time PS5 has faced unauthorized modding (piracy). Back in the PS3 era, a leaked encryption key escalated into a massive hack, and the PSP had modchips and custom firmware left unchecked for years. Drawing on that history, the thread pointed out that the ease of this latest method — “update the firmware, disconnect, then crack it via a browser vulnerability” — has spread to roughly the same accessibility as the old PSP mods. That said, the source here is a single post on X (formerly Twitter), with no official confirmation from Sony or any third party. The fact that both an encryption-key-leak theory and a browser-vulnerability theory are circulating at once shows this is still speculation for now. One point readers could easily misread is the idea that “every user automatically gets everything for free” — but as commenters noted, it requires manual firmware steps and disconnecting from the network, and online-only titles or updates likely need separate workarounds.

  • Gaming Forum Calls Out News Report for Labeling the PS5 a ‘Popular Game Console’ in Theft Story

A 27-year-old man was arrested for stealing a PlayStation 5 from a retail store in Kiyota Ward, Sapporo, and the news article’s phrasing — calling it a “popular game console” and “a game console known as the PlayStation 5” — set off a stir on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. While many in the thread pointed out that the console’s name recognition among the general public has slipped, attention also focused on just how sloppy the method was, allegedly hiding it among groceries to slip it past a self-checkout.

The PS5 just wasn’t recognized by society anymore…

In July, a 27-year-old man was arrested for stealing two game consoles from a retail store in Kiyota Ward, Sapporo.

The suspect arrested on suspicion of theft is Norihiro Sakurada (27), a delivery worker from Asahikawa.

The PlayStation is a perishable good — it goes bad within a week of release

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This topic blew up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board after a news article covering a game console theft used the phrase “popular game console, the PlayStation 5.” Several years after its release, the PS5 is well-regarded among gaming enthusiasts for its performance, but since the name itself still hasn’t fully penetrated the general news-reading public, the article is thought to have opted for this explanatory phrasing. In the thread, many users pointed to the laxness of the store’s security — despite being a product highly prone to resale scalping, it apparently could be carried out of the store just by hiding it in a self-checkout grocery cart. Note that the suspect’s real name and the details of the charges are already public information from news reports; this article limits itself to covering the thread’s reaction to the reporting’s wording.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Mainstream media 📺 apparently there’s a game console called the “PlayStation 5”“.

  • Former Nintendo President Iwata: ‘You Need 10x the CPU, 100x the GPU’ — 5ch: ‘It’s Unfair the Switch 2 Is in the Same Generation as the PS5’

A thread on 5ch’s hardware-wars (Geha) board blew up after quoting a remark from former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, made back during GameCube development: “For users to feel a game is ‘clearly different,’ you need 10 times the CPU and 100 times the GPU processing speed.” The thread covered how, despite the GameCube actually outperforming the PS2 at the time, it looked worse on paper because of how polygon counts were reported publicly, and how today’s Switch 2 and PS5 only differ by a few times in raw performance. Opinions were split on whether the spec race still means anything now.

[Interviewer] And the result of that was the GameCube’s specifications, is that right?

[Iwata] That’s right. The GameCube was built to be a console where graphics come out easily, where you get near-peak performance without even tuning for it, and where software is simple to make.

And the very first priority in developing the GameCube was “breaking away from numbers-ism and spec-ism.”

Honestly, this still holds up today. It's just that semiconductor progress has slowed down, so you can't squeeze a 100x GPU jump out of a few years anymore. Flip it around, though — since the Switch 2 and PS5 only differ by a few times in performance, you can't really differentiate on graphics, which actually works in the Switch 2's favor since it's portable and has Nintendo's own lineup.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Iwata’s remark comes from an interview given during GameCube development (ascii.jp), reflecting Nintendo’s design philosophy of “breaking away from numbers-ism and spec-ism.” At the time, the GameCube actually outspecced the PS2, but because the method used to calculate polygon counts differed, it looked worse in official materials — commenters in the thread point out this was a marketing failure. Today’s Switch 2 and PS5 are different hardware generations, yet the performance gap between them is only a few times over, a fact rooted in the broader slowdown of semiconductor progress. Some in the thread argued that a gap this small can be closed with software-side tricks like AI-assisted rendering, raising the question of whether Iwata’s “feel over specs” argument still holds up today. That said, issues the thread didn’t touch on remain, such as how accurate AI rendering really is and its effect on power consumption.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Nintendo’s Iwata: ‘To make software where you can perceive it as clearly different, you need 10x the CPU and 100x the GPU processing speed’.”

  • Former PlayStation Exec Questions PS5 Disc Discontinuation: ‘What Are Players Actually Buying?’

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced it will end disc production for new PlayStation console games as of January 2028. In response, former PlayStation Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden raised the question on a podcast: “If you truly don’t own it, what are players even buying?” On 5ch’s gaming hardware board, posters clashed between frustration that digital copies are effectively just licenses—carrying the risk that ownership could simply vanish—and voices accepting it as an inevitable sign of the times. Some suggested Nintendo’s game-key-card system as an alternative, while others cited past examples like the Vita’s discontinuation.

Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (SIE) recently announced that it will end disc production for new PlayStation console games as of January 2028. The announcement has sparked backlash from many players over concerns about game preservation and ownership. Amid this, former PlayStation Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden has openly questioned whether this decision shows disregard for the platform’s most loyal core gamers.

Layden recently appeared on the podcast “The Expansion Pass,” where he acknowledged that digital downloads have genuinely made buying and playing games more convenient.

“Players really do… yeah, we love downloads. Everyone says, ‘Downloading is more convenient than going to the store to buy a game!’ But that’s not quite right. Downloading is only really more convenient because it’s easier than walking across the living room and putting a disc into the console.”

That's exactly why there's no expiration

Background and Key Points of This Topic

What SIE announced was the “end of disc production for new games,” not the abolition of packaged (physical) versions themselves — a distinction that was repeatedly conflated throughout the thread. The core of former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden’s point is that digital versions aren’t truly a “purchase” but effectively a license to use, meaning consumers bear the risk of losing access if a service shuts down or licensing policy changes. In the thread, Nintendo’s game-key-card system (a card that carries only the license data) came up as a possible alternative, though posters also pointed out the separate challenge of storage capacity limits. Comments conflating “ending discs” with “abolishing physical packaging entirely” muddled the discussion, and in some cases the clash between digital and physical camps escalated into personal attacks.

  • PS5 Pro Resale Prices Blow Past ¥220,000 as New Stock Vanishes Amid GTA6 Buying Frenzy

Used PS5 Pro prices in Japan have spiked to an eye-watering ¥220,000-plus, even as new units remain sold out everywhere. Overseas, major retailers like GameStop have repriced used units at $1,399 — $500 above the console’s suggested retail price, which itself was already hiked this year from $750 to $900. Thread debate split between two theories on what’s driving the shortage: pent-up demand ahead of the still-unreleased “GTA6,” or demand driven by buyers wanting the console for illegal “jailbroken” emulator use.

GameStop has repriced all digital-edition PS5 Pro units (used) at $1,399 on its own site — a $500 markup over the suggested retail price set by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

It’s not just GameStop, either: other major retailers including Best Buy and Walmart have also been confirmed raising used and refurbished prices to the same level, with new units listed as sold out across the board.

The console’s suggested retail price itself was also raised this year, from $750 to $900 — and even accounting for that, this still counts as a massive price surge.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The PS5 Pro has been reported as being in short supply ever since launch, and its suggested retail price was raised this year from $750 to $900. On top of that, used prices have now been marked up even further, and the thread’s central dispute is over what’s actually driving the increase. One camp points to buying demand anticipating the long-delayed “GTA6,” while another argues the real driver is demand for illegal “jailbroken” emulator use — and no consensus has been reached. One point readers may easily misread is that a spike in used prices doesn’t directly benefit the manufacturer; commenters in the thread themselves noted that “the maker doesn’t profit from used sales.” It’s also worth keeping in mind that domestic yen prices and overseas dollar prices aren’t directly comparable, given differences in exchange rates and region-specific regulations.

*This article excerpts and summarizes the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “[Grim News] PS5 Pro Hits an Absurd “Over ¥220,000 Used” — Price Surge Spreads Amid New-Stock Sellouts and “GTA6” Demand Spike.”

Even though Sony’s overall earnings are strong, the news around its PlayStation business has been nothing but bad — studio closures, layoffs, and the like. That contradiction sparked questions on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Commenters split over what’s driving the good earnings: some called it an ‘earnings-dressing trick’ of inflating apparent profit margins through budget cuts and layoffs, while others said it simply reflects growing revenue from gacha-style titles and live-service games. The debate heated up further over SIE’s accounting method of booking third-party sales alongside its own, with some suspecting it’s ‘cooking the numbers’ and others countering that it’s ‘completely standard accounting practice.’

    Re: #93
How is that any different from Nintendo outsourcing its own games to subcontractors and only taking a 30% cut?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

One reason Sony’s earnings look so good is that SIE books third-party sales on the PS Store on a gross basis. This isn’t fraud — it’s a fairly standard accounting practice — but the thread was split between those suspicious it’s ‘number magic’ and those explaining it as ‘legitimate accounting.’ Another point of debate was the shift in revenue structure: many pointed out that even as unit sales of full-price games decline, overall revenue keeps rising because gacha-style mobile titles and live-service games now make up a bigger share of the business. At the same time, developments on the ground — in-house studio closures, layoffs, and the shrinking of physical disc releases — suggest that PlayStation’s traditional strength, big first-party full-price titles, is fading. This seemingly contradictory situation, with strong earnings and a shrinking frontline happening at once, is what kicked off the thread’s central question.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread ‘Why does Sony have such good earnings while it’s nothing but bad news for PlayStation?‘.

  • Western Sales Breakdown for Trails in the Sky: 2nd Chapter — Switch 2 Grabs 72%, PS5 Only 9%

A UK sales-tracking site’s platform breakdown for the Western release of Nihon Falcom’s RPG Trails in the Sky: 2nd Chapter has sparked discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. The split: Switch 2 at 72%, original Switch at 19%, and PS5 at just 9%. Posters quoted Falcom’s president, who had previously said new titles sell well on Switch and Steam while “PS5 is fading with no future,” arguing the new numbers back up that remark. Others pushed back, noting the series already skews toward a Switch-heavy fanbase, so this doesn’t necessarily prove PS5 itself is in decline.

    Re: #9
It's just a series that already cultivated its fanbase on this particular platform selling well there—doesn't prove anything ("tanemaki," or seeding, means a publisher built up a loyal audience on a platform ahead of time)
Simply put, the customer base for this specific game got pulled almost entirely onto Switch

Falcom's President: "New titles are selling on Switch and Steam. PS5 is fading, and it has no future."

    Kondo (Falcom President):

Right now, in terms of new-user numbers, Switch and PC (Steam) are where most of the growth is.

If we want to keep this going long-term, we need to properly release titles on those platforms too and work hard at broadening our audience.

The Trails in the Sky remake was inserted specifically to win new users. Kai no Kiseki is PlayStation-exclusive, and its user decline is already obvious.

(The cause being that they limited the platform to PS)

Honestly, no joke, it's gonna be hell
I bet we'll see more publishers just skip releasing software on it entirely

    Re: #41
Guess it must really not be selling on PS5 if it's fading that badly…
    44AnonymousOct 8, 2026 07:35
On top of that, PS5 sales tend to flatline right after launch week, while Switch 2 just keeps steadily selling ("jiwa-ure" — slow-and-steady long-tail sales)

The final gap is gonna end up dozens of times over
    45AnonymousOct 8, 2026 07:36
    Re: #44
It's already an 8x gap right now at 72% vs 9%…
    47AnonymousOct 8, 2026 07:37
    Re: #44
That's exactly why the real-world gap ends up way bigger than it looks
Earnings shot up too once they started putting it on Switch
    52AnonymousOct 8, 2026 07:41
They ran the Trails series on PlayStation forever, then the moment they put it on Switch it blew past 10 million copies instantly and earnings went through the roof!

No wonder they want to say PS5 is fading 😭

Plenty of companies talk about their software selling on Switch or Switch 2, but a company saying it sold on PS5? Genuinely doesn't exist

Kinda wished they'd stuck it out and shared PlayStation's fate to the bitter end ("ichiren-takushō," an idiom for being bound to the same fate, for better or worse)

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

It’s worth noting that these figures come from a region-specific sales chart compiled by the UK’s Nintendo Life, not worldwide totals or digital sales — they’re limited strictly to physical retail sales in the UK. Posters in the thread also pointed to EA Sports FC 27 as a counterexample, where the same chart shows PS5 taking a 67% share. In other words, platform sales splits vary enormously by genre and fanbase, so it’s premature to read the overall fate of PS5 purely from the numbers for a Trails in the Sky series that already skews toward Switch owners. Falcom’s president’s comments, too, were made in the context of deciding where to release new titles — not as a blanket dismissal of PS5.
