  • Wolverine Has 30,000 Unsold Copies, Sparking Worry — 5ch Wonders: ‘Guaranteed Spot in the “Misery Grab-Bag”?’

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board (known as “Geha”), posters were chatting based on Weekly Famitsu’s Top 30 sales chart. The talk centered on reports that nearly 30,000 copies of Wolverine are still sitting unsold in the market, and that a brand-new first-party title had already dropped out of the rankings in just its third week on sale. The thread also brought up whether bundle editions of Dragon Quest XI S and Octopath Traveler would end up in bargain bins (so-called “wagon sales”), and — as usual — the regular back-and-forth continued over whether it’s Switch 2’s third-party games or PS5’s first-party games that are really struggling.

    Re: #119
The Switch version of DQ11S started with 300,000 retail copies in its first week and went on to sell over a million at retail alone as a long-term seller,
so it'll probably just keep selling the same way as an extension of that
It's not like there are hundreds of thousands of units in inventory — there's only around 14,000 copies left, after all
    126AnonymousOct 9, 2026 11:17
Ace Combat and Musou (Warriors) are both "orange," so they'll probably sell through fine

The Octopath Traveler set had a small shipment to begin with, and it's aimed at customers who don't already own both games, so this is about what you'd expect
If it's only a handful of copies sitting in stores nationwide, that's not enough to end up in the bargain bin

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Famitsu Top 30 is a weekly package-sales ranking compiled from major domestic retailers in Japan, and it doesn’t reflect digital download sales. Because of this, recurring arguments like “Switch 2 is where third-party games don’t sell” or “PS5 is where first-party games don’t sell” tend to turn into shouting matches based on only part of the full picture, and this thread never reached any real conclusion either. Figures that came up, like “30,000 unsold copies of Wolverine” or a “2,000 yen trade-in price,” are also just speculation based on movements at certain stores or in the used-game market — not official figures released by the publisher — so some caution is warranted. Terms like “wagon” (bargain bin), “fukubukuro” (New Year’s lucky grab bag), and “utsubukuro” (literally “gloom bag,” a pun on fukubukuro) are also just slang that 5ch users commonly throw around for games that aren’t selling well, and don’t necessarily mean an actual clearance sale has been decided on.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hardware & Industry, aka “Geha”) thread “[10/9] Famitsu Top 30 Update.”

  • New PSP Rumored to Have 8-Inch Screen, Internal SSD + High-Speed SD Card — 5ch: ‘It’s Basically a Reiwa-Era Game Gear’

Unofficial leaks report that Sony is developing a handheld, the “PS6 Portable” — essentially a new PSP — alongside its next console, the “PS6.” The PS6 is expected to stay above $1,000 due to soaring component costs, and the new PSP is drawing attention as a cheaper device that can still run PS4/PS5 titles. New information also suggests the screen will be around 8 inches, with storage following the Switch 2’s approach of internal SSD plus a high-speed SD card slot. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, discussion kept going, mixing concerns that it would inherit the Switch 2’s weight and battery problems, debate over the leaked TFLOPS figures, and comments that it “looks like nothing but a Switch clone.”

Multiple sources have reported that Sony is developing a handheld gaming device, the “PS6 Portable” — essentially a new PSP — alongside its next-generation console, the “PlayStation 6.” Note that Sony has not officially announced either device by name, so for now this remains unofficial information.

As for the console PS6, its suggested retail price is expected to stay above $1,000 due to rising component costs, including memory. Because of this, attention is turning to the new PSP, which is said to support PS4/PS5 titles and would presumably be relatively cheaper, letting you “display on a big TV via a dock at home, and play on the built-in screen when out.”

Various new details about this new PSP have also surfaced, covering its processor, power consumption, and a storage setup described as “internal storage plus an SD card slot, like the Switch 2.”

If the leaked APU specs are accurate, they're going the low-spec, low-power route, so weight and battery life should land around Switch 2 level or a bit better.
But the specs themselves are nothing special either — above the Switch 2, below the Xbox Series S, and only catching up to Series S level by leaning on the newer architecture

    Re: #47
In the Moore's Law Is Dead leak that Tane (the article's author) is citing as his source, the PSP3's handheld-mode spec is 4.91 TFLOPS — so even in portable mode it's about 1.5x more powerful than the Switch 2 at full docked power.
The process node is TSMC N3P too, so it's not even comparable to the Switch 2's Samsung 8nm.
And architecture-wise, setting aside AMD vs. nVIDIA entirely, there's something like a 4-generation gap

If they release it as a mobile-device form factor, its real rival stops being the Switch and becomes UMPCs instead
    — people have been saying that for a while now

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This topic originates from multiple unofficial leaks claiming Sony is developing a handheld, the “PS6 Portable” (a new PSP), alongside the console “PS6” — Sony has made no official announcement of either. On pricing, the PS6 console itself is expected to stay above $1,000 due to soaring component costs like memory, and the claim that the new PSP will be “relatively cheap” is only a comparison against that baseline — it’s easy to mistake this for an actually affordable price. Where the thread split was over how much to trust the specs: some took an optimistic view of performance based on the TFLOPS figures, while others, citing differences between RDNA generations, argued those numbers were overrated. On the other hand, concerns about practical handheld issues like weight, heat, and battery life, plus the view that it’s just imitating the Switch 2, were common across many posts. CFW and emulation also came up, but these were discussed as general knowledge about modding existing hardware rather than anything specific to this leak.

  • Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Metascore Sparks Debate — PS5 Stuck at 83 While Other Platforms Hit 88

Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen earned a Metascore of 88 on PC and Switch 2, but the PS5 version alone sits at 83 — a gap that sparked discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry (console-war, aka “geha”) board. Posters were split on whether the difference comes down to review count (21 reviews for PS5 versus around 20 for the other platforms) or PS5-specific bugs and freezing issues. Some noted they couldn’t actually find any review pointing out bugs, leaving the cause unconfirmed.

Metascore is a metric calculated by weighting reviews from listed media outlets, so even a small difference in review count can shift the score. In the thread, the result — PS5 at 83 versus roughly 88 for the PC and Switch 2 versions — sparked a split between the “it’s just the review count” theory and the “PS5-specific bugs and freezing” theory. However, those arguing the latter couldn’t produce any actual review text pointing out bugs, so the claim remains unconfirmed. The thread also cited data showing Switch 2 outselling PS5 in North American hardware sales for August 2026, and platform comparisons like this — scores, sales, and all — are a recurring flashpoint for arguments on the hardware/industry (“geha”) board.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch hardware/industry (“geha”) board thread “Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen gets a Metascore of 88! PS5 version alone stuck at 83 due to bugs and frequent freezing 😭.”

  • Sony vs. Nintendo Revenue Showdown Thread: ‘You Can’t Compare These Two,’ Critics Say

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō G” (general live-commentary) board, a post citing Sony Group’s ¥12.4796 trillion in revenue and ¥1.4475 trillion in operating profit sparked a comparison debate with Nintendo. When one user objected that “it’s unfair to compare Sony Group — which also has real estate, insurance, and banking businesses — with Nintendo, a pure gaming company,” another pointed out that Sony’s gaming division alone posted ¥4.42 trillion in revenue and ¥600 billion in ordinary profit. The thread then swung toward claims that “Sony still wins by a mile” and that “the PS5 hardware is struggling while the Switch 2 is outselling it,” eventually touching on differences in accounting methods and expectations for the PS6.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This kind of “Sony vs. Nintendo” comparison is a recurring topic on 5ch’s console-war (“geha”) threads, and the sticking point is almost always what unit of comparison to use. Sony Group is a conglomerate spanning film, music, gaming, and more, and its real estate, insurance, and finance-related businesses aren’t consolidated subsidiaries, so they aren’t included in its reported revenue. Nintendo, by contrast, is a pure gaming company, so putting the two side by side starts from mismatched premises in the first place. As pointed out in the thread, Sony’s gaming division uses “net accounting,” which folds in revenue from third-party software — so while the top-line revenue looks huge, expenses balloon right along with it, meaning profit is the real figure to compare. It’s also worth noting, as the thread mentioned, that the Switch 2 launched in 2025, making 2026 its second year — and how you read its sales trend (unit-based vs. revenue-based graphs, and how you factor in the shrinking child population) can shift the picture considerably, a nuance readers can easily miss.

  • PC Gamers Clap Back at “Consoles Are Obsolete” Talk: “That’ll Cost You $4,000” — 5ch: “Trade-in Value Makes It a Wash”

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” board, a post arguing “consoles are obsolete now, a PC is all you need” sparked a heated thread after someone countered that “matching PS6-level performance on PC would cost close to $4,000.” Opinions clashed between those who said the PS6 is actually cheaper once you factor in its strong trade-in resale value, and PC loyalists who pointed to the resale value of individual parts instead. The debate then spiraled into what a PC is even good for these days, touching on multi-monitor “gaming while doing something else” setups, running old games through emulators, and comparisons with mobile gaming.

Background and key points of this debate

The “PS6” referenced throughout the thread has no official price announcement as of this writing — the “$1,500” and “$5,000” figures are purely posters’ guesses and jabs. There is a real-world backdrop to this, though: since 2025, AI-driven demand has kept pushing up prices for memory (DRAM) and GPUs, making actual build costs for a PC prone to running higher than expected. The disagreement largely comes down to differing baselines — comparing the cost of matching equivalent performance versus comparing console sticker price alone. Consoles benefit from an active trade-in market that lowers their effective cost, while the point about PC parts fetching little on resale extends from that same logic. There’s also a noticeable gap in how people view a PC’s purpose, split between those who value multitasking and AI use and those who feel a dedicated gaming console is all they need.

  • PS5 Going Controller-less? Rumors Say DualSense Won’t Be Bundled Starting January 2027

A rumor spreading overseas suggests that starting January 31, 2027, Sony’s standard PS5 package may no longer include the DualSense controller. The claim originates from the founder of Insider Gaming, not an official Sony announcement. On 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board, many users reacted by calling it a “de facto price hike,” noting that a standalone DualSense costs around 10,000 yen. Others pointed to the precedent of the PS Vita TV, arguing this might just be a change in how it’s sold rather than the bundled version disappearing entirely, while some said it would actually be welcome news for anyone buying a second controller. Opinions were split.

PS5 to Sell DualSense Separately? Controller-less Sales May Begin January 2027

It has emerged that the PlayStation 5 may start shipping without its standard DualSense controller. The claim, which originated with the founder of Insider Gaming, has drawn attention overseas, with reports suggesting that starting January 31, 2027, the standard PS5 package will ship without a controller. However, this has not been officially announced by Sony at this time.

I think it's just a desperate move to disguise a price hike

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The PS5’s DualSense controller isn’t cheap on its own, starting at around 8,800 yen standalone — a significant cost relative to the console itself. As one Vita TV example raised in the thread shows, Sony has previously treated a controller-less console as its “standard package” before. In this case too, removing something that was previously bundled and selling it separately will likely raise the total amount customers end up paying, even if the console’s listed price stays the same or appears to drop — which is why many in the thread called it a “de facto price hike.” At the same time, some argued it’s actually reasonable for people buying a second console or who just want to replace their controller, so opinions were divided. This information originated with the founder of Insider Gaming and has not been officially confirmed by Sony. Many details remain unclear — including the release timing, whether it applies only to the base model or the Pro as well, and how it would be handled in Japan — so for now this should be read strictly as a rumor.

  • Buyer Fresh From Nintendo’s Trade Show: “We’re Stocking Up Hard on PS5 Units. I Mean, Obviously.”

A buyer who attended Nintendo’s trade presentation tweeted, “We’re stocking up heavy on PS5 units. I mean, obviously,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. The trade presentation is where publishers preview the next season’s software lineup to retailers, and the post was widely read as hinting that Nintendo’s own lineup looked thin. The thread split over the reasoning — some pointed to demand building ahead of GTA6’s release, others to unconfirmed rumors like a disc-less redesign, and some even floated rising purchases aimed at piracy as a factor.

"A bit extra" should be plenty, lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

A “trade presentation” is where a publisher walks its retail partners through the next season’s release lineup, directly shaping how much stock buyers order. The tweet quoted in the thread — “I mean, obviously” — was widely read as implying Nintendo’s January-March lineup looked thin, and that interpretation dominated the thread. What split opinion was the question of what’s actually driving PS5 demand upward: some pointed to the GTA6 effect, others to unconfirmed rumors like a disc-less redesign or other hardware changes, and still others suspected rising purchases aimed at piracy — but none of these go beyond speculation. As for the rumor that “PS5 units will stop including a controller,” that claim has only surfaced through overseas sources, and as of October 2026 there’s been no official announcement. One thing readers should be careful not to misread: the tweet itself is just one buyer’s personal take, not an official statement from either Nintendo or Sony.

On October 8, Xbox announced the launch of a new division called “XP.” The group is meant to expand game IP into film, TV, and other screen content, apparently prompted by the smash-hit live-action “Minecraft” movie and the critically acclaimed “Fallout” TV series. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, the thread lit up over the wave of sarcastic replies from foreign users under the announcement post and comparisons to Nintendo’s “Mario” movie and Sony’s live-action track record — though some posters also brought up Xbox’s own past retreat from the video/film business and voiced mixed feelings about Phil Spencer’s leadership, making the overall reaction far from unanimous.

But the intervention just made performance worse, so doesn't that make Nadella incompetent too?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Around 2013, Xbox had already ventured into original programming with “Xbox Entertainment Studios,” only to shut it down within a few years — making this “XP” initiative its second attempt. The backdrop is the live-action “Minecraft” movie becoming a worldwide smash hit, plus the Amazon-streamed “Fallout” series earning strong critical acclaim. The thread discussed this alongside Nintendo’s increasingly aggressive IP expansion following the Mario movie’s success, while opinions on Sony’s live-action track record were split — some cited “The Last of Us” as a genuine success while noting its other titles never gained similar traction. Opinions were also divided on CEO Phil Spencer, whose reputation has wavered amid major layoffs and Xbox hardware’s declining presence, as well as on how to judge Satya Nadella’s intervention in the company’s management. It’s worth noting that the announcement itself concerns an organization separate from the game development division and is not a new product or game title announcement — a point that’s easy to misread.

  • Memory Prices Surge, So Windows Finally Goes on a Diet — 5ch: ‘Should’ve Done This From the Start’

Soaring semiconductor demand from the AI boom has driven up memory prices, and PC makers are moving back toward 8GB configurations. Windows has long operated on the assumption that “more memory is always better,” bloating with each release — but Microsoft is reportedly reversing course and working to cut memory consumption, with some reports claiming actual reductions in memory usage in the recent Windows 11 26H2 update. On 5ch, reactions were split: sarcastic comments like “should’ve done this from the start,” skepticism that this is just a cosmetic numbers improvement, and analysis pointing to heavyweight components like WebView2 as the real culprit behind memory bloat.

    5AnonymousOct 8, 2026 16:03
Right now, memory prices keep climbing thanks to the AI boom, and OEM PCs are drifting back to 8GB configurations. Microsoft has long insisted that "more RAM is always better," but now, ironically, the logic has flipped to "RAM's too expensive, so let's lighten the OS instead." Whether Windows 11 can actually hold up in an 8GB RAM world looks like it could be a major turning point.

    Re: #30
Of course they can't — with today's app scale and update frequency, there's no way to do native support for every environment like in the old days.
If anything, consoles that are built against optimized dedicated APIs are the real living fossils here.
Though even that's fading, since Xbox dropped its dedicated API starting with the Series X and unified on DirectX.

    Way too little technical skill.

If Nintendo made a PC OS, it'd probably be amazing.

There are crash reports, but it's not a spec issue.
Ace Combat 8 isn't demanding in terms of performance.
    Minimum: RTX 2060 / RX 6600
    Recommended: RTX 3070 / RX 6800

The requirements are actually on the lower side.
The crashes will probably get patched out.

    Nice lie.

There's no way SP3 runs on 512MB either.
    89AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:01
Most of this is just releasing memory that was reserved on the assumption it'd be used anyway — so it just looks like more memory is free.
Once you actually start using it normally, it eats up about the same amount of memory as before.

    95AnonymousOct 8, 2026 19:19
It's just optimizing for the max memory available.
With 8GB, it adapts to 8GB.
It's been swapping all along, so with an SSD it was basically fine anyway.
With 16GB it feels like usage has gone up compared to before.
Boot used to be 4.7GB, now it's +1GB.
Once you use Edge and Chrome together it goes over 10GB.

    Chrome's the one hogging it.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The backdrop here is the surge in memory demand and DRAM price spikes driven by the AI boom that’s been ongoing since late 2025. This has forced PC makers to scale back the amount of memory they ship, and it’s chipping away at the design assumption Windows has relied on for years: that memory is abundant. Where opinions in the thread split was over whether this slimming-down actually reduces real-world memory usage, or whether it’s just releasing “unused” memory on the surface. Poster #89 voiced skepticism based on past experience, while poster #95 gave a positive assessment citing real-world measurements on both 8GB and 16GB systems. There’s also a point (poster #52) that dependence on heavyweight components like WebView2 and Teams is part of what’s driving memory consumption, though the responses alone don’t make clear whether this is a fundamental redesign or just a tweak. Some commenters bring up the history of Windows Vista slimming down into Windows 7, but that’s based on personal recollection, not any official figures.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Microsoft: “Memory’s too expensive, so going forward Windows will lighten up its RAM requirements! A new memory strategy!”“

  • X: “Nintendo’s Download Versions Barely Sell At All — Not Even 10%”

A claim posted on X (formerly Twitter) — that “Nintendo’s download versions barely sell at all, with the ratio coming in at under 10%” — sparked discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (commonly known as “Geha”). In the thread, users pointed out that Nintendo’s published digital ratio of roughly 50% excludes digital-exclusive titles, while Sony’s figure in the 80% range includes them — highlighting a difference in how the two companies count their numbers. Opinions were divided over the credibility of the original post, as well as over the point that physical sales volume and the digital ratio are two separate issues.

They probably haven't even read what Nintendo actually published.
    3AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:31
Sounds like Nintendo actually sells more digital than Sony does…
then again, that's just their 'manufactured shortage' marketing.
    5AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:33
Even if that were true, it wouldn't matter — physical media is getting discontinued and vanishing from store shelves either way.
    7AnonymousOct 8, 2026 14:34
There must have been tons of cases where an indie series kept getting steady sequels through 3DS digital releases, but got dropped after just one Vita port.
So where's the evidence that the share flips completely once you're talking about 'the digital version' instead of 'digital-exclusive'?

At least domestically, even if Wolverine's digital ratio were 90% and FE's were 50%, FE would still have sold more overall.
    (Wolverine: 220k, FE: 300k)

Even if FE's digital ratio were only 25%, FE would still barely come out ahead — so the percentage going up doesn't automatically mean anything.

    Nintendo's 50% digital ratio excludes digital-exclusive titles.
    Sony's 80% includes digital-exclusive titles.

Nobody in any camp discloses clear digital numbers, so everyone gets to spin it however suits them.
Meanwhile, the publishers — who obviously know their own real sales figures — just keep doing whatever they're doing…

Even the adult doujin platforms (FANZA and DLsite) manage to publish real sales figures, so other platforms should be able to do it too.

    82AnonymousOct 8, 2026 16:40

In other words, almost nobody is actually playing Nintendo games.

    88AnonymousOct 8, 2026 16:57
Honestly, this whole mindset feels kind of outdated…
People treat 'digital' like it's something special, so a high digital ratio = impressive — and that leads to bashing whoever has a lower one (regardless of whether it's actually low or not)…
    97AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:17
    Re: #88
It's not that deep a topic.
It started when PlayStation fans, getting crushed in the Famitsu weekly sales charts, began saying 'but it sells on digital!' — basically just denial and excuse-making.
There's no guarantee that shifting to digital is inevitable, and no proof it's even the 'right' direction.
    102AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:24
Besides, Nintendo publishes shipment numbers by country, so comparing those against Famitsu's weekly charts should give you a rough digital ratio.
It's not like a game is secretly selling millions while sitting outside the rankings.
    103AnonymousOct 8, 2026 17:27
    Re: #102
That approach has its own problems though.
Switch has these landmark indie 'physical' releases that skew the overall digital ratio.
Suika Game (Watermelon Game), for instance, is almost entirely digital.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Nintendo publishes its own digital sales ratio in a way that excludes digital-exclusive titles, with the most recent figure coming in at roughly 50%. Sony’s cited “80% digital ratio,” on the other hand, includes digital-exclusive titles, so the two numbers can’t be directly compared due to their different scopes. The source of the “under 10%” claim raised in the thread was never specified, and many commenters questioned the credibility of the person it was attributed to, making the truthfulness of the post itself a central point of debate. The thread also noted that strong physical sales figures and a low digital ratio across the overall software lineup aren’t necessarily the same thing — and since neither company discloses its exact counting methodology, either number is hard to verify.
