  • Console vs. PC Power Bill Debate Divides 5ch: ‘Guys Still Living in Their Childhood Bedroom Don’t Get Electricity Costs’

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a thread titled “It’s wrong that consoles are better value just because of ‘paid online’ or overall cost-effectiveness” blew up after someone replied with “Let me introduce you to: ‘electricity bills.’” The original post calculated the Nintendo Switch 2’s power draw at about 20W versus a gaming PC’s 300W, putting the difference at roughly ¥8.68 per hour — which adds up to over ¥6,000 a year if used 2 hours a day. The thread saw a flood of pushback over whether the math ignored online subscription fees and whether assuming a 300W power supply was even reasonable, and the debate never really settled.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Playing online with a home console typically requires an annual subscription fee, such as Nintendo Switch Online or PlayStation Plus, whereas on PC, platforms like Steam often don’t charge extra for online play itself. The “cost-effectiveness” argument that kicked off this thread was pointing at that gap, but the electricity cost calculation in the original post fixed the PC’s power draw at a flat 300W, without noting that actual consumption varies widely depending on the game and the PC’s components. Electricity rates themselves also vary by contract, region, and time of day, so the ¥31/kWh figure used here is just one rough benchmark. Commenters in the thread raised points about factoring in online subscription costs and pushed back on how the power supply capacity was being calculated, suggesting this isn’t really a topic that can be settled with a simple numbers comparison.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “Idiot: ‘It’s wrong that consoles are cost-effective just because of paid online!’ Me: ‘Electricity bills’.”

  • Which Games Let the Sega Saturn Beat the PlayStation? 5ch Debates

Which console was actually better, the Sega Saturn or the PlayStation, is a perennial topic that still gets rehashed regularly on 5ch, nearly 30 years after they launched. In this thread, plenty of posters argued that “for 2D stuff like fighting games and shooters, the Saturn crushed it,” and things got lively with specific titles like Sakura Wars, Devil Summoner, and Dynamite Cop. Meanwhile, some behind-the-scenes trivia about porting timelines came up too — “Darkstalkers was announced for PlayStation but never actually showed up, and since the Saturn version came out first, nobody bothered buying it” — along with nitpicky comparisons like “the 3DO version of D is the best one.” It turned out to be a thread with more nuance than a simple who-won-who-lost debate.

    Nah, that's a stretch.
You don't mix up Super Famicom, N64, and GameCube games, do you?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Sega Saturn used a two-chip setup — VDP1 and VDP2 — built around 2D sprite rendering, which often let it handle fighting game and shooter ports more smoothly than the PlayStation. The PlayStation, on the other hand, was built around polygon rendering, which gave it the edge in 3D fighting games and racing titles. The “wins” and “losses” argued over in the thread are really just based on individual users’ impressions and the quality of specific ports — in terms of actual sales, the Saturn was decisively outsold by the PlayStation, and that fact doesn’t change. Partway through, the comparison also drifted to include the Mega Drive, Dreamcast, Super Famicom, and even the GameCube, mixing systems from different generations into the same conversation. Readers should note that some of the thread wanders away from the original “Saturn vs. PlayStation” topic into these tangents.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanimo Jikkyo G) thread “[Proposition] Games Where the Sega Saturn Actually Beat the PlayStation.”

  • PS6 Price Could Hit $1,200 Max Without Sony Eating the Loss

Speculation that Sony’s next-gen PS6 could cost as much as $1,200 if sold without taking a loss on the hardware itself (known as “gyakuzaya,” or reverse margin) became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (nicknamed “Geha”). Given that the current PS5 Pro has already climbed to around ¥200,000 domestically, some posters said “that wouldn’t even be surprising at this point,” while others worried “a price like that would kill adoption.” The thread also debated the reliability of an estimate putting manufacturing costs at around $760, as well as how the price would compare to PCs and the next-gen Switch.

    A PlayStation insider's price prediction

    Tsukikage (agano4sq5)
Reasons the PS6 might not end up pricier than the PS5 Pro:
・The PS6 prioritizes adoption, so it has a lower profit margin than the Pro
・It uses a lower-grade CPU and GPU than the Pro
Since the Pro isn't meant to be a mass-adoption model, it's easier to give it a higher margin than the base model
In other words, it's not necessarily true that the PS6 will definitely end up pricier than the PS5 Pro
    https://x.com/agano4sq5/status/2103440837212594295?s=46

The $1,000 (¥160,000) figure for the PS6 cited in Tane's article is pure speculation and bogus

The manufacturing cost is $760 (¥120,000)
Newly released models are basically never sold for more than the manufacturing cost
And it's extremely unlikely they'd jack the price up significantly on top of that

Around ¥120,000 is the reasonable line

For a console whose whole selling point is rich visuals and powerful processing,
there's no reason they'd release a next-gen machine that's weaker than the previous one.
    20AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:07
You can't really compare a ¥150,000 console to a PC on value.
At that point you might as well splurge a little more and just get a PC.
    21AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:08
It's unlikely to be cheaper than the PS5 Pro,
so a $1,200 floor price with no built-in loss actually seems about right.
Though if that happens, there's no way it sells 5 million units in Japan.
    22AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:09
Sounds like the PS5 has been completely cracked wide open (hacked), so they probably want to put out a next-gen system and start fresh.
    23AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:11
Even at around ¥200,000, with parts prices still climbing, they're probably still in the red.
At this point there's no room to negotiate—it's just whatever price they say it is.
    24AnonymousOct 10, 2026 20:12

Online play ("nettai"/"tropical," forum slang punning on "netto" for online) isn't mandatory, though.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Console pricing has long followed a practice called “gyakuzaya” (reverse margin), where hardware is sold below its manufacturing cost and the loss is recouped later through software sales and network fees. With semiconductor and circuit-board material costs climbing and the yen remaining weak, the street prices of the PS5 and PS5 Pro have trended upward since launch. The thread split into two camps: one saying “if this trend continues, $1,200 wouldn’t even be surprising,” and another warning that “a price that high would stall adoption and just prolong cross-gen sales alongside the previous console.” It’s worth noting that several unconfirmed estimates were circulating from different sources—including the $760 manufacturing-cost figure and commentary on an article by a writer referred to as “Tane”—and none of this amounts to an official announcement from Sony.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) thread “PS6 Price Could Balloon to a Max of $1,200 Without Sony Subsidizing the Hardware Loss.”

  • Fire Emblem’s “Locked After First Playthrough” System Draws Complaints — 5ch: “Too Exhausting to Even Want a Second Run”

A discussion has broken out on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board over the burden of completionist elements in the latest Fire Emblem title. It started with reports that items and growth/training elements needed for Part 3 actually get locked in the moment you clear your first playthrough, with no way to go back and reacquire them later. Since the development team had previously explained that “no matter what order you play in, we’ve made sure no irreversible elements appear,” voices rose pointing out the discrepancy with this system. On the thread, opinions clashed between “trying to be a completionist is just asking for trouble” and “a system that contradicts the official explanation is a garbage system,” with defenders and critics continuing to go back and forth.

That's not a "redo," that's a second playthrough, right? You're phrasing it that way on purpose to make it sound worse.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

At the heart of this topic is the tension — common throughout the Fire Emblem series — between “replay elements” and “irreversible elements.” In a prior interview, the development side (Mr. Yokota) explained that the game was “made so that no irreversible elements appear no matter what order you play in,” but on the thread, reports have surfaced that items and classes needed for Part 3 actually get locked in once you clear your first playthrough, with no way to change them afterward. The fact that it isn’t even covered on strategy guide sites appears to be because the game takes so long to clear that few players have verified it firsthand. Opinion on the thread is split between “trying to be a completionist is unreasonable” and “the official explanation doesn’t match the actual system,” and neither side is entirely off base. What’s easy for readers to misunderstand is that this lock-in isn’t a “bug” but an existing, built-in system, and that it’s hard to notice during a normal (non-completionist) playthrough.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry/Geha) thread “I’ve lost the will to clear FE, it’s just too exhausting.”

  • Why Do In-House Staff Write Game Scripts Instead of ‘Top-Tier Screenwriters’? 5ch Debates

On 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board, a thread asked why game scripts are so often written by in-house staff rather than famous screenwriters — like an Akutagawa Prize-winning novelist. Using Xenoblade and Final Fantasy as examples, posters repeatedly pointed out that writing a game script involves constraints unlike those of novels or film screenplays. Others pushed back, noting that Silent Hill f brought in a writer with a background in visual novels, and that Yakuza had used outside writers in the past — arguing that hiring external writers isn’t actually rare, which sparked further debate.

    1AnonymousOct 10, 2026 14:38
Movies: "We got that Akutagawa Prize-winning novelist to write the screenplay."
Games: "I love anime and manga and I'm decent at writing, so they let me handle the script!"
    This is exactly the problem.

For the record, Xenoblade does bring in writers from anime and other fields too.
    11AnonymousOct 10, 2026 15:01
According to Yoko Taro, games often hit cases of "can't do this, can't do that" because of spec limitations, so it's frequently easier to adjust the script instead of forcing the implementation through —
which is why it's better to have a writer on staff full-time.

That company has a structure where whoever's higher up tends to grab all the control — it skews dictatorial. If that person were genuinely a great creator, the company would've just kept thriving without issue.

What I dislike is the attitude of trying to get by with in-house amateurs.
    114AnonymousOct 10, 2026 16:09
    Re: #92
Well, hiring an outside writer isn't actually all that rare in itself.
You occasionally hear about writers who got brought in during early development to help with plotting,
through interviews or social media posts from people involved.
Sometimes it goes unnoticed because the credit is listed under a different name.

The thing is, the amount of scenario material a game actually needs —
for a visual novel it can be dozens of times the volume of a regular book,
plus you need huge amounts of side dialogue and minor events beyond the main story,
and whenever a town or field layout changes, the lines have to be rewritten too,
so handling that in-house is overwhelmingly more efficient in a lot of cases,
which is why it rarely turns into the kind of job where you'd hand a professional author or scenario writer
enough work to credit them as the main scenario writer.

Since the volume and format are so different from a novel or TV drama script,
even when a writer does provide a script for a game, it often ends up staying at the "original concept" stage rather than the finished product.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Unlike novels or film screenplays, game scenarios differ enormously in volume and format — branching paths, minor events, and dialogue that has to be rewritten whenever a field layout changes. The fact that development can stretch on for years, with the scenario itself liable to get cut due to spec changes, was cited as another reason professional writers rarely stay attached full-time. As examples like Yakuza’s use of outside writers and Silent Hill f’s hiring of a visual-novel writer show, bringing in external writers isn’t itself unusual — but posters noted it rarely turns into work substantial enough to be credited as the main scenario. One point that got lost in the thread was that the very premise — “a writer with a prestigious award must be able to write a good script” — is itself disconnected from the practical realities of making a game.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, aka Geha) thread “Why do games get handled by otaku-turned-developers instead of top-tier screenwriters?“

Sega’s new racing game “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds” has become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board, after it emerged that the roster features a massive crossover lineup — including Minecraft’s Steve, SpongeBob, Hatsune Miku, Evangelion’s Asuka, and Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud. In the thread, opinions clashed head-on between those saying “the game itself is actually solid” and critics arguing that “the gadgets aren’t balanced, so the combinations feel monotonous.” The discussion ranged widely — from complaints that the ad artwork makes the characters too small to see clearly, to speculation about why there’s no voice acting, to suggestions that Sega should go free-to-play to combat poor sales.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds” was conceived as Sega’s answer to Mario Kart, and as noted in the thread, its defining feature is a large-scale crossover lineup that goes beyond Sega’s own IP — including Steve (Minecraft), SpongeBob, Hatsune Miku, Asuka (Evangelion), and Cloud (Final Fantasy VII). Oddball crossovers aren’t new in themselves; Bandai Namco’s “Mario Kart Arcade GP” had Pac-Man and Mametchi appear as guest characters too. The thread’s discussion split roughly into two main points. The first was the question of overall quality: some said the core gameplay itself wasn’t bad, while others criticized it as a “generic Mario Kart” where the gadgets aren’t balanced and the lineups end up feeling similar. The second was the cause of poor sales — pointing to the small, hard-to-see character art in ads, speculation about why there’s no voice acting (budget or rights issues), and proposed fixes like going free-to-play or monetizing through character add-ons. Note that one claim in the thread suggesting “Sega deliberately leaked information” has been omitted from this article for lack of supporting evidence. As for actual sales figures, one post in the thread cited “roughly 500,000 units sold worldwide,” said to be based on a remark from management, though this could not be independently verified within the thread itself.

※This article was compiled by excerpting and summarizing the 5ch (Hardware & Industry / “Geha”) thread “Sonic Kart Turns Into a Game Where Steve, SpongeBob, Hatsune Miku, Asuka, and Cloud All Race Together.”

  • 5ch Divided Over ‘Action Game Tier List’ — Sekiro, DMC5 Rank Near the Top

A user on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board posted a self-made “action game tier list,” and the thread erupted into a mix of praise and criticism. While titles like Sekiro, Devil May Cry 5, and Ninja Gaiden 4 landed near the top, many posters argued the list was “skewed” since it left out Nintendo-style and 2D action titles such as Mario and Astro Bot. Others claimed the combat in Devil May Cry 5 and Bayonetta is “just one-sided attacking,” broadening the debate into a bigger argument over what should even count as a good action game in the first place.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board, user-made game “tier lists” get posted fairly regularly, and arguments over biased selection criteria have become a running theme. This time, because the list was limited to action games specifically, opinions split over whether a high-difficulty one-on-one action game like Sekiro can even be judged on the same scale as combo-driven, spectacle-focused action games like Devil May Cry 5 and Bayonetta. Some also pointed out that excluding 2D/platformer action titles like Mario and Astro Bot suggests the criteria lean specifically toward “hardcore 3D action.” Since fan-made rankings like this tend to reflect the creator’s personal taste, they’re worth reading with the understanding that they aren’t an objective measure.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry [Geha]) thread “Action Game Hardcore Fans Have Decided the Definitive Action Game Tier List!!.”

  • New Xbox Title ‘Gears E-Day’ Sells 230K Copies — 5ch: ‘With Game Pass, It’s Really 950K’

Overseas analytics firm Alinea Analytics estimated that the Xbox-exclusive title ‘Gears E-Day’ sold around 230,000 copies in its first week, sparking discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha). Thread participants pointed out that this figure doesn’t include the 722,000 Game Pass upgrades, suggesting the real number of paying users could be around 950,000. At the same time, many voiced doubts about the reliability of Alinea Analytics’ estimates themselves, and the debate spread to how the numbers should even be interpreted.

    3AnonymousOct 10, 2026 09:41
Despite far fewer sales on Steam, Xbox accounts for nearly three-quarters of revenue (about $26 million of $37 million, versus roughly $11 million on Steam). In other words, the "230,000 units" figure understates the number of paying users. Including the 722,000 upgrades, roughly 950,000 people actually paid for E-Day. E-Day is a great game (it's in my top 10), but at a time when Xbox desperately needs a revenue win, these numbers fall short for a flagship title. E-Day sold 62,000 copies on Xbox, with 722,000 premium upgrades — meaning for every one copy sold on Xbox, about 12 Game Pass upgrades were sold.

The figure at the center of this discussion is an estimate that overseas analytics firm Alinea Analytics worked backward from earnings data and the like — it is not an official statistic released by the platform itself. Because Xbox’s business model leans more on monthly Game Pass subscriptions than on traditional retail sales, a simple “units sold” figure can’t capture the real number of users, and that became the thread’s central point of contention. Indeed, comment 3 showed that, separate from retail sales, there were more than 722,000 Game Pass upgrades, highlighting just how hard a simple comparison is. Notably, the same Alinea Analytics had, just days earlier, estimated sales of the PS5-exclusive title ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ at 1.9 million copies, and several posts in the thread questioned the consistency and reliability of these estimates.

  • Wolverine’s User Score Drops to 6.6 After Another ~300-Review Purge — 5ch: “I Can’t Stop Laughing”

Sony’s new action game Wolverine has seen another big swing in its Metacritic user score. According to the thread’s original poster, roughly 300 reviews were mass-deleted, dropping the score to 6.6. Post #48 in the thread compiled an independent timeline of the score’s rise and fall — 6.4 → 6.7 → 6.3 → 7.1 → 6.6 — and some are now pointing out that the total number of deleted reviews has topped 1,000. Behind the story is talk that the game carries a 6-million-unit sales target tied to keeping its Marvel license, and opinions were split on whether it still makes sense to keep manipulating the score this long after launch.

    Background and Points of Debate

Metacritic’s user score system lets anyone post a review, which makes it prone to “review bombing” — a single person using multiple accounts to dump a batch of extreme scores at once. Because the operators detect unnatural posting patterns and delete them in bulk, scores swinging up and down over a short period isn’t unusual on its own, and some point out that similar mass deletions have happened with Nintendo titles too (post #13). What split the thread wasn’t the number swings themselves, but whether to focus on the “scale of the manipulation” or on “the game’s actual content.” The timeline in post #48 is just one user’s manual tracking of events over time, not an officially confirmed record. It’s also worth noting that the 6-million-unit quota and the terms of the Marvel contract are only hearsay within the thread — not information Sony or anyone involved has officially disclosed.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch Hardware/Industry board (commonly called “Geha”) thread “[Sad News] Sony’s Wolverine Has Another Mass Review Deletion, Score Drops to 6.6 😭“.

  • ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’ Estimated at 6.16 Million Units Worldwide Sparks Debate on 5ch

Overseas outlet Game Business reported, citing figures compiled by research firm Ampere Analysis, that “Marvel’s Wolverine” had sold approximately 6.16 million units worldwide (about 95% digital). On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, the numbers kicked off comparisons with Nintendo titles’ sales figures, but the conversation quickly turned to the reliability of Ampere Analysis’s estimates themselves. Pointing to the firm’s estimate of 1.4 million units for “Death Stranding 2” — a number never officially confirmed in the publisher’s earnings reports — posters repeatedly argued that “this outfit’s analysis can’t be trusted,” and the thread devolved into everyone demanding sources from each other.

The guy who keeps misusing "pasokonga" (slangy/garbled way of saying "PC version") only ever shows up when stock's actually circulating, huh.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sales estimates from third-party research firms like Ampere Analysis are a different thing from the official figures publishers disclose in their earnings reports — they’re ultimately just estimates built on market data. The thread’s cited figure of 1.4 million units for “Death Stranding 2” doesn’t appear anywhere in Kojima Productions’ earnings materials either, and was brought up as an example of the gap between such estimates and actual disclosed results. Meanwhile, the claim in response 2 that “PlayStation software will drop physical disc versions starting January 2028” is an actual industry policy, not speculation, reflecting the fact that digital sales already make up 80-90% of the market. That said, the thread also saw an error where a development budget of “$30 billion” was really meant to be around “$300 million” — a good reminder that in these cross-platform sales-comparison threads, numbers tend to spread unchecked and take on a life of their own.
