  • Yuji Horii Releases AI-Made Mystery Adventure ‘Interrogation Room Komiya’ for Free — Took Just 30 Minutes to Build

Yuji Horii, the game designer known for Dragon Quest and The Portopia Serial Murder Case, used AI to create a mystery adventure game called Interrogation Room Komiya and released it for free on X. According to Horii, the whole thing took only about 30 minutes to make. On 5ch, some posters praised the technical feat (“this is genuinely impressive”), while others debated whether AI would push game development toward smaller teams and lower budgets — alongside the counterpoint that “tools are meaningless without talent behind them.” Plenty of nostalgic comments also recalled the setting of Portopia.

Learning finishes after 4 turns against the same enemy, but the final boss gives you no chance to save,

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Portopia Serial Murder Case, released in 1983, is one of Yuji Horii’s defining works and helped popularize the mystery adventure genre in Japan. Interrogation Room Komiya follows in that lineage — a small-scale piece that appears to be an experimental attempt to assemble a scenario and visuals quickly using generative AI. The thread mixed praise for the technology (“anyone can make games now”) with skepticism (“tools are useless without talent behind them”), broadening into an industry discussion about how AI use might affect game development costs and team size. What’s easy to overlook, though, is that rather than AI having “automated” the production, the foundation here is still Horii’s own skill at planning and writing. Given that he has long spoken about how commercially tough the adventure game genre is, it’s more accurate to read this release not as a new commercial title but as an extension of personal experimentation and playfulness.

*This article is composed as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Mystery Adventure] Dragon Quest and Portopia’s Yuji Horii releases AI-made game ‘Interrogation Room Komiya’ for free — development time “30 minutes”“.

  • Yuji Horii Sparks Controversy by Releasing an AI-Made Game — 5ch: ‘The Ones Complaining Have Never Made Anything’

Yuji Horii, known for Dragon Quest and The Portopia Serial Murder Case, has released a free browser-based mystery adventure game called Koshitsu no Komiya (Komiya in the Interrogation Room), made with the help of AI. Horii himself revealed it took “about 30 minutes” to make, expressing amazement that you can produce a game just by directing an AI — no drawing or programming skills required. When the story was reposted to 5ch, reactions split between people welcoming a veteran creator embracing AI and pushback from the “anti-AI” crowd, who object to training data being used without permission and raise copyright concerns — sparking a debate over just how far AI use should be allowed to go.

Dragon Quest and Portopia creator Yuji Horii releases free AI-assisted game Koshitsu no Komiya — a mystery adventure made in “about 30 minutes”

Horii’s mystery adventure game Koshitsu no Komiya can be played for free in your browser.

Back when I made The Portopia Serial Murder Case on PC, I came up with the story myself, drew the art myself, and programmed it myself — I made the whole game alone. And now, with AI, you don’t need to draw or program at all; just by giving instructions to the AI, you can make a decent game all by yourself. It’s honestly astonishing…

Just like you don't need permission from the artist whose work you reference when practicing drawing, you don't need permission for AI training either.

    Background and Points of Contention

Yuji Horii is the creator of Dragon Quest, and is also known for having single-handedly developed the PC adventure game The Portopia Serial Murder Case in 1983. In an interview with Famitsu, Horii said he made the newly released Koshitsu no Komiya by leaving the text and progression up to AI, finishing it in “about 30 minutes” — a different mechanism from image-generating AI models trained on huge volumes of images. Meanwhile, the movement known in Japan as “anti-AI” largely traces back to a controversy that spread starting around 2022, in which image-generation AI was said to have used illustrators’ work for training without their permission. In the thread, this distinction went largely unaddressed, and the discussion instead played out as a broader debate over whether AI use in game development should be accepted at all. Part of why opinions keep talking past each other is the legal complexity involved: the use of training data itself sits in a copyright gray area, and infringement only becomes a clear issue when the generated output closely resembles an existing work.

New copies of the PS5 action game Marvel’s Wolverine are being sold at GEO for 39% off list price, less than a month after release — and it’s become a hot topic on 5ch. Thread posters pointed to the game’s first-week sales in Japan of roughly 20,000 units, a 75% drop from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s 77,348, along with a Metascore of 75 and a 60% sales decline in Europe, sparking debate over the reasons behind both the rapid price drop and the weak sales. Discussion also touched on the game’s large development budget and the sales structure in which PS5 titles that don’t sell through in their opening week tend to see prices collapse quickly.

The thread pointed to a difference in sales culture behind this: PS5 titles that don’t sell through in their first week tend to get dumped quickly by retailers trying to offload dead stock, whereas Nintendo titles tend to hold their list price much longer. There’s also a gap between the Metascore of 75 and hopes that word-of-mouth would drive steady sales growth, and the scale of the development budget (posters cited figures around $300 million) is shaping how people are reacting to the price collapse. Opinions also split on the merits of physical releases altogether — some argue going download-only would reduce retailers’ dead-stock risk, while others note it would make it harder for a real market price to form through sales, so behind this one price-drop story lies a broader disagreement over the distribution system itself.

  • Mario Kart World Called ‘Not Fun’ — 5ch Overwhelmingly Agrees

An article arguing that Mario Kart World “isn’t fun” was picked up on 5ch, sparking a wide reaction on the Hardware/Industry board (Geha). In the thread, many commenters agreed with the criticism that adjusted drop rates for comeback items have turned the game into a “misfortune-avoidance contest,” and with the complaint that the new wall-riding mechanic favors advanced players and raises the skill barrier. On the other hand, some pushed back, noting that the core gameplay still carries over from previous Mario Kart titles and remains plenty enjoyable if you don’t care about competitive play — opinions split largely along how people judged the new features.

For what it's worth, the take is apparently too spot-on to generate much thread activity on Geha.

Mario Kart 8 felt like the series' crowning achievement, so this is rough. The next Smash Bros. is probably going to be in the same tough spot.

Honestly, ever since the "Craptendo Switch 2" (a mocking nickname for the Switch 2) came out, there hasn't been a single game better than its predecessor.
Sales are obviously nowhere close to the previous installment either.

8 Deluxe was just too well put-together, honestly.
    22AnonymousOct 11, 2026 15:18
    Re: #7
That game was the culmination of the whole series, content volume included.
World completely fails to put its open-world scale to any real use as a main feature, and the new wall-riding mechanic is basically pro-only, which just widens the skill gap even more.
    8AnonymousOct 11, 2026 14:56
First place comes down to luck: in rooms where everyone's skill level is close, it's decided by "how well you dodged spiny shells, red shells, lightning, random hits, junk items, getting stomped on," etc. It's not the satisfying kind of comeback randomness you get in mahjong or Pokémon — it's turned into a misfortune-avoidance tournament. Especially after the latest update dropped the lightning drop rate, comeback mechanics and strategic exchanges have basically disappeared.

If comeback mechanics and strategic exchanges have basically disappeared, isn't that just… a skill-based match then? 🤔

Keep the elimination mode, where you're knocked out if you don't place high enough, on the current courses.
For everyone else, they should've just made a normal 3-lap course option — Nintendo's kind of dumb for not doing that.

Long-running series start out highly polished
    ↓
In Mario Kart World, basically every new feature gets panned
    ↓
But if you just carry over the already-polished previous entry and refine it further, you get stagnation and diminishing returns
Breath of the Wild → Tears of the Kingdom is a textbook example of that

This is exactly why Nintendo consoles, whose sales lean so heavily on a handful of first-party titles, haven't sold well for two generations running.
    68AnonymousOct 11, 2026 18:08
    Re: #51
New Mario Kart features get panned every single time and eventually get cut, though.
Two-player riding, special items, wheelies, underwater sections, half-gravity — those are still around, but personally I hate the glider too (it got better in 8 once recovery sped up).
This time the 24-player races, the open world, and the rail wall-riding all feel like they're dragging the game down in a pretty flashy way.

    Re: #66
Dropping the ability to hold two items at once made no sense. They didn't even fix that until Deluxe.

It's a weird game — treated like a flop, but it's quietly selling well.

I'm not into the competitive scene, so I'm actually enjoying it more than 8 Deluxe.

Even if the features added in World are a miss, everything else is still proper Mario Kart underneath, so it sells.

I don't play either since I hate racing games, but is there some clear reason 8 Deluxe won't cut it?
Smash Bros. is scary because fatal online lag turns it into a different game entirely, so if the new one flops there's no going back — but this is Mario Kart we're talking about, right?

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Mario Kart World is the latest entry in the series, released in 2025, and it introduces major new features such as 24-player simultaneous races, open-world course traversal, and rail-based wall-riding. What split opinion in the thread was mainly how to judge these new features. Many pointed out that while wall-riding is something anyone can learn with practice, it ends up favoring more advanced players and widening the skill gap, raising the barrier to entry. There was also notable criticism that adjusting the drop rates of comeback items like the lightning bolt has made matches among top-tier players come down to “how much bad luck you managed to avoid,” making the role of randomness a central point of debate. On the other hand, some argued that the core controls and handling still carry over from previous Mario Kart games and remain plenty enjoyable as long as you’re not fixated on competitive play — it’s worth noting that dissatisfaction with the new features and evaluation of the core gameplay are being discussed as two separate threads of opinion.

  • Is the FF7 Remake an Insult to the Original? 5ch: “Couldn’t Argue With That”

A reaction video from overseas fans about the FF7 Remake’s direction and staging was shared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, sparking a mixed debate. The spark was a comparison video from an overseas user claiming that “the FF7 Remake is an insult to the original — they’ve turned it into a Disney theme park.” Many pointed out the mismatch between the photorealistic graphics and the still-anime-style scenario direction, and complaints stood out over how Aerith’s death scene was changed. On the other hand, some pushed back that fans were simply putting the original on too high a pedestal, and others welcomed the added content outright — so opinions never settled into a consensus.

    Couldn’t argue with that.

    It's all because trash-tier PlayStation ('Gomi-Sute') exists, isn't it?
Square Enix ('Kuzu-Eni,' i.e. 'Trash-Enix') nearly died making FF16 a PS exclusive for Sony's ('Chony') benefit, and when they finally reached for their last lifeline, this is what happened.
And after that, apparently Sony's treating Square Enix like trash too.

Well, twenty years ago, it probably would've been true.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The FF7 Remake has unfolded as a trilogy, running from 2020’s “FF7R” through “Rebirth” (2024), and some in the thread compared this to the full remake of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time,” which was released as a single, standalone title. Calls for an FF7 remake had already been circulating for nearly 20 years, going back to the PS3 tech demo unveiled in 2006, and one point of debate in the thread was the gap between that “20-year-long anticipation” and how the final product actually turned out. Another axis of the debate was the mismatch between visuals and presentation: several posters noted that despite the photorealistic-leaning graphics, the in-story direction and dialogue delivery remained anime-style, and opinions split over this. Views were also divided over how Aerith’s death was handled and the parallel-world elements, with one camp wanting it to stay true to the original and another appreciating the changes. It’s worth noting that phrases like “an insult to the original” and “a Disney theme park” reflect how some fans personally feel about it, not an official position stated by the developers.

  • How Far Did Dragon Quest’s Golden Age Really Go? 5ch Thread: “Script Length Ballooned from 2,800 Pages in DQ5 to 16,000 in DQ7”

A thread on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha) asking whether “Dragon Quest’s golden age only ran through the Famicom quartet (I-IV) and Super Famicom’s DQ5” sparked a debate over just how far the series’ run of masterpieces really extended. One theory for why development cycles stretched out from DQ6 onward was a surge in script length — pointing out that the text ballooned from roughly 2,800 pages in DQ5 to about 16,000 pages by DQ7. On the other hand, DQ7 actually set a new all-time sales record for the series, and DQ9 pushed the number even higher, putting the popular narrative that “old fans drifted away” at odds with the actual sales figures. The discussion also branched into specifics — battle balance, the quality of various remakes, and how the Builders spin-offs stack up.

    1AnonymousOct 11, 2026 12:11
Everything after that is just some Dragon-Quest-flavored thing wearing the Dragon Quest name.

    Script length:

    DQ6 — genuinely fun.
DQ7 — would've been fun if not for getting stuck collecting stone tablets.
DQ8 — genuinely fun, and the graphical leap was huge.
DQ11 — arguably the most fun in the whole series, and for a DQ game the graphical leap was impressive too.

Sales aside, I think DQ9 is really the biggest problem,

    Re: #102
Thinking back on it now, Shin Megami Tensei II was actually a pretty mediocre game.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Dragon Quest’s script length has grown enormously since the Famicom era, and the figures cited in the thread — “2,800 pages for DQ5, 4,000 for DQ6, 16,000 for DQ7” — were offered as one illustration of how much the series’ development scope expanded. Indeed, release intervals widened from DQ6 onward, and the idea that growing scenario volume is one reason development dragged on is a theory fans often bring up. At the same time, DQ7 set a new all-time sales record for the series at the time, and DQ9 pushed the number even higher on the back of changes like its save-data specifications — leaving a gap between the popular narrative of “old fans drifting away” and the actual sales data. What split opinion in the thread was whether to weight nostalgia- and memory-tinted judgments of where the “masterpiece line” falls, or the hard sales and review data. One point readers can easily miss: raw sales figures alone don’t automatically indicate a “golden age” — the broadening of the fan base and shifts in the market environment are also tangled up in the picture.

  • Does Crime Pay More Than Honesty? 5ch: “Even Bad Guys Live Earnestly in Their Own Way”

A thread that kicked off with posts like “Living honestly is starting to feel pointless” and “Don’t bad people actually have better lives?” sparked heated debate on the Gaming Hardware (Geha) board. Some argued that people who turn to wrongdoing have more options and reap more rewards precisely because they’re not bound by the law, though they tend to make enemies and often end up miserable in their later years. Others pointed out that we only ever notice the “bad guys” who succeeded — the ones who failed and got caught simply vanish from view, so there’s a survivorship bias at play. The discussion also exposed differing views on just what laws and police are actually for, raising point after point that couldn’t be reduced to a simple good-versus-evil binary.

You're old, bedridden, hospitalized, pain shooting through your whole body — and you're about to go under the knife for the surgery that's supposed to finally end it.

And here's the twist: you are the one performing the surgery on yourself. If your worldview is "making money matters most," or "work is just how I earn a living," or "it's fine to be bad at your job as long as you put your heart into it" — then that's exactly the kind of doctor who shows up for you

That's true enough, but it comes down to personality, so it's not simple.

And even short of calling someone a full-on "bad guy," people who have no problem lying or who play dirty do tend to come out ahead a lot of the time.

To begin with, everyone is always living on the sacrifice of others, whether they mean to or not.
And even among intentional sacrifices, there are layers to it — whether it's for your own life, your family's life, basic survival, or just plain pleasure, it varies a lot.

Framing things purely in terms of good and evil is difficult to begin with. Ethical standards differ from person to person, and if you draw the line at "obeys the law vs. doesn't," almost everyone has broken some law or another

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “honest people get the short end of the stick” style of argument is a theme that resurfaces online every time a corporate scandal or a politician’s misconduct makes the news, and this thread is no exception. That said, as pointed out within the thread itself, this kind of argument has a structural blind spot. The “bad guys” whose lives worked out stand out and get noticed, but the people who did the same things and ended up failing, getting arrested, or ruined simply disappear from view — a selection bias (comments 11, 15). There’s also a misunderstanding embedded in the counterargument that “it’s strange for bad guys to come out ahead when police and laws exist.” As comments 50 and 52 touch on, law and the justice system aren’t devices built to completely eradicate wrongdoing — they function purely as a deterrent, and the mere existence of bad guys who don’t get caught doesn’t by itself mean the system is contradictory. The core of where opinions split in this thread is that it conflates morality with gain and loss, when in reality multiple separate factors — effort, luck, and how the law actually gets enforced in practice — are all tangled together.

  • ‘Esports Is Just a TV Game Tournament’ Comment Sparks Debate — 5ch Says ‘Sport = Competition, Full Stop’

Streamer Yoshida Seisakusho remarked, “I still don’t get esports. Isn’t that just a TV game tournament?” The comment got picked up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board and snowballed into a full-blown debate over whether esports can really be called a sport. Posters fired back that “a game tournament in English is literally esports,” while others countered that “sport” properly refers to physical competition. The thread spiraled into examples like shogi and go being classified as “mind sports,” and extreme hypotheticals about whether manga-drawing skill could count as a sport. What emerged was both a discomfort with the term “esports” itself and wildly different lines people draw when deciding what counts.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The term “esports” spread from the 2000s onward with the aim of positioning game tournaments as competitive sports, and the definition of “sport” was never uniform to begin with — even the IOC classifies go and shogi as “mind sports.” The thread’s split came down to a single question: whether “sport” means “physical movement” or “any competition with a winner and loser.” Under the first definition, esports and shogi alike get excluded; under the second, the extreme conclusion is that even manga-drawing contests would theoretically count as sports. The discussion also touched on how adoption of esports as an official Tokyo Olympics event was considered but ultimately scrapped, illustrating how far the term has spread without a matching consensus on how to judge the real thing.

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, users were debating whether the PS5 can pull off a “15-15” — matching Nintendo’s platforms title-for-title in the weekly hardware sales chart — by the end of the fiscal year. “15-15” is board slang for having an equal number of PlayStation and Nintendo titles land in the weekly top sales rankings, and the thread title’s “I’ve come to end this war” riffs on a well-worn manga catchphrase. Some posters hoped the upcoming GTA6 (aka “Grasef” in Japanese shorthand) would shift the tide, but opinions split over whether PS4 had ever genuinely hit 15-15 in the past, and the talk branched into another topic — the shifting loyalties of third-party publishers.

30-0 is clearly out of reach, so maybe they figure 15-15 is at least doable — but to begin with, nobody's even confirmed whether any past PlayStation generation actually hit that (15-15) mark.

Background and key points of this discussion

“15-15” and “30-0” are slang terms Geha (hardware/industry board) regulars use to describe how many PlayStation versus Nintendo titles land in the weekly hardware sales rankings (roughly the top 30). It isn’t an official statistic — it’s an unofficial metric fans tally themselves off the weekly charts, which is why it can read as baffling to anyone unfamiliar with the term. The thread grew out of the goal of “hitting 15-15 (an even split) by the end of the fiscal year”; the thread title’s “I’ve come to end this war” riffs on a well-known manga/anime line and isn’t describing any literal conflict. Replies split over whether PS4 ever actually achieved 15-15, with some insisting “it happened multiple times” and others countering “it only happened once” — a sign of just how fuzzy everyone’s memory of the actual numbers is. The talk also branched into a separate topic — shifting allegiances among third-party publishers (Nippon Ichi, Gust, Falcom, and others) — underscoring that the industry dynamics at play go well beyond a simple win/loss framing.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “PS5 “I’ve Come to End This War (BOOM!)”.”

  • Xbox and PS5 Hit Record Sales Slump — 5ch: “PS5 at Its Lowest Level in 13 Years”

Xbox and PlayStation sales have fallen into a record slump in the US home console market. Unit sales for the January–August 2026 period dropped 33% year-over-year for Xbox and 25% for PlayStation. Rising component prices have also pushed average purchase prices to record highs, with the PS5 hitting its lowest level since 2013 and Xbox its lowest since 2020. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board, data was posted showing that the Nintendo Switch2 topped both unit sales and revenue in the US over the same period, sparking debate over which data could be trusted. Some pointed out that Japan is the only country where Xbox is outselling its previous generation, drawing attention to the stark contrast between the domestic and overseas markets.

In the US home console market, Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation have fallen into a record sales slump. Unit sales for January–August 2026 were down 33% year-over-year for Xbox and 25% for PlayStation. Tariffs and rising AI-related demand have driven up component prices, pushing up console prices as well. With no clear timeline for next-generation consoles, the market is facing a difficult situation.

A major factor behind the sales slowdown is the rising price of the consoles themselves. From January to August 2026, US consumers paid an average of $529 (about ¥83,582) for a new Xbox console, up 26% year-over-year. PlayStation also rose 20% to an average of $597 (about ¥94,326). Average purchase prices for both brands hit record highs, with falling unit sales and surging prices happening at the same time.

Home consoles typically get cheaper over time after launch. However, the current-generation Xbox and PlayStation 5 (PS5), which debuted in 2020, have kept getting more expensive even six years after release. This price trend runs opposite to the usual pattern, and the scale of the increases is unusually large.

Coming in at #2 was the Nintendo Switch 2, up 70% from August and up 17% year-over-year from last September. Year-to-date, it's up 13% overall. Xbox came in at #3 — up 30% from August, but down 29% year-over-year from last September. Its overall year-to-date sales are up 1.7%.

Lmao, PlayStation's done for ("owa-sute" — 5ch slang for "PlayStation is finished")

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

These figures are based on tallies from the US research firm Circana. Behind the continued rise in console prices are tariff-driven increases in parts costs, along with shortages and price spikes in semiconductors and other components driven by surging AI demand. Consoles typically get cheaper the longer they’ve been on the market, but the Xbox and PS5, both launched in 2020, are actually getting more expensive even in their sixth year — an unusual trend compared to past generations. In the thread, data from a UK research firm and US data got mixed together in citations, sparking arguments over whose numbers were actually being discussed. Even the claim that Switch2 is the sales leader needs a caveat, since the result can change depending on the country and time period in question — it’s not simply a case of “only Switch2 is doing well.”
