  • Witcher 3 Remaster Announced — Free Upgrade for All Platforms; 5ch Reacts: “I Don’t Get Complaining About a Free Update, LOL”

A remastered version of “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” along with new DLC has been announced, with a free upgrade coming to PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch 2.

In the thread, while some posters said “I don’t get why anyone would complain about a free update, lol,” discussion also broke out around the reactions of users who already had the Steam version sitting unplayed, and around the fact that Japanese law requires the domestic Switch version to charge a nominal 100 yen for the upgrade. Reports that not just the graphics but also combat and animal behavior are being overhauled drew plenty of attention too.

How long are they gonna keep milking Witcher 3?

There's apparently a Witcher 4 planned that won't be coming to the "trash console" (derisive slang for the Switch)

Don't worry, I'll be playing it on an RTX 5090 — there's no way I'd touch that underpowered PS5 (lol)

Compared to PC, all consoles are trash anyway, lol
Though the Switch 2 does have the advantage of being portable

    Still milking Witcher 3, huh?
This developer moves way too slowly on new titles, don't you think?

It took 4 years to go from 2 to 3 in the first place — blame it on 3 being such a huge hit

They already put out a remaster on PS5.
How many times are they gonna re-release this thing? Are they Square Enix or something?

    Re: #12
That was the next-gen native version, not a remaster
    15AnonymousAug 26, 2026 08:20
So the remaster and new DLC are coming to Switch 2 as well
The Switch 1 port was a pretty rough squeeze, so the visual gap is probably going to be brutal

It really is brutal — it's already listed on the store, and the promo screenshots look worlds apart

Apparently they're legally required to list some price up front
Back in the early PlayStation days, updates used to be paid — that's actually the reason it's free now

Ugh, I bought the old version on Steam and it's just been sitting there unplayed
This kills what little motivation I had left, man… wish they'd give the old version a free upgrade too

    Re: #24
It's a free upgrade — think GTA5's "Enhanced" edition. On Xbox ("green," forum slang for the platform) you'll reportedly even get things like second-generation ray reconstruction, so it should turn out pretty insane
Both existing DLCs were great, so I might as well buy the new DLC too
    34AnonymousAug 26, 2026 08:36

    75AnonymousAug 26, 2026 09:16
Maybe it's because multiplatform releases including Switch 2 have just become the norm now, but the console-war trash talk has really quieted down
Even Xbox keeps getting multiplat support despite its software sales, so it makes sense that most titles will probably keep going multiplat on Switch 2 too
    77AnonymousAug 26, 2026 09:16
    Re: #75
As long as a platform has decent enough performance, they'll probably support it multiplat

And the Switch 2 turned out to have just enough performance to clear that bar
    76AnonymousAug 26, 2026 09:16
You're really better off having played Witcher 1 and 2 as well, if only for the character relationships

Since it's not labeled a "Switch 2 Edition," I'd guess upgrading shifts you to a digital copy (meaning it won't launch on the original Switch anymore)

    101AnonymousAug 26, 2026 09:40
So the Switch version isn't getting a "2nd Edition," it just gets patched as-is?

    Re: #101
The Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions are completely different builds, and rebuilding it from scratch would be a huge effort, so I'd guess they just ported over the Switch 2 version from the other platforms

    Background and Key Points

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt turns eleven this year, and CD Projekt Red’s remaster/DLC plan follows the precedent set by 2022’s “Complete Edition” next-gen update on PS5/Xbox Series, itself already a free patch for owners of the base game. What’s new this time is Switch 2 joining PS5, Xbox, and PC on day one, plus a promised overhaul of combat, controls, and animal AI rather than just a visual pass. The Switch 1 version, released in 2019, was a famously heavy technical compromise, so the jump to Switch 2 native footage is expected to be stark.

The thread’s actual disagreement wasn’t about whether the update is good — nearly everyone agreed a free remaster is a clear win. It split over two smaller things: whether Japan’s Switch buyers are being shortchanged by a 100-yen charge that PS5/Xbox/PC owners don’t pay, and whether owning an untouched Steam copy makes the news exciting or just another reminder of a stalled backlog. On the pricing point, posters correctly noted this isn’t CD Projekt Red singling out Japan — it traces to a Japanese legal requirement that a nominal price be listed rather than the item being labeled “free” outright, a quirk of consumer-labeling rules rather than a business decision.

What the thread doesn’t spell out for outsiders: physical Switch 1 cartridges likely won’t play the remaster locally, since posters expect this to mirror how Skyrim’s Anniversary Edition handled its Switch 2 upgrade — pushing existing physical owners toward a digital-only update rather than a compatible cartridge patch.

Footage of a new game from China’s HoYoverse, shown at Gamescom, became a hot topic on 5ch’s console gaming (Geha) board. While many praised the graphical polish, others pointed out a sense of déjà vu, saying it resembled Elden Ring or Monster Hunter—sparking a broader debate about how Japanese games’ technical prowess compares.

There's a whole range going on—borrowing from Western games and movies, Monster Hunter influences, next-gen action game staging, and more.
Elden Ring itself is basically ripping off Western works, but otaku who only play games probably can't see past the surface.
It's just an anime style with finely detailed character models, and slapping a dark color palette on the world doesn't show any real sense of design.
It's not even ruins—there's nothing there at all.

The fact that everything from the motions to the abilities looks so similar isn't that guy's fault.

He joined the project partway through, and what he actually worked on was stuff like fine-tuning parameters and enemy AI routines.

FF16 turned out the way it did because they deliberately referenced Devil May Cry.

There are countless action games out there, yet somehow they borrowed so many elements specifically from Devil May Cry.
    108AnonymousAug 26, 2026 09:17
    Re: #103
'Partway through' just means the early stage before the specs were even finalized—the guy who actually built the action was combat director Suzuki himself lol

    Background and Key Points

HoYoverse (formerly miHoYo) is the Shanghai-based studio behind Genshin Impact (2020) and Honkai: Star Rail, gacha titles that generate reportedly billions of dollars a year and have let the company fund AAA-scale production despite starting as a mobile-first developer. Gamescom, held annually in Cologne, is Europe’s largest games trade show and a standard venue for splashy trailer reveals. The new footage sits alongside a string of other HoYoverse projects reportedly in parallel development — a life-sim, an auto-battler, an action title — reflecting the company’s now-familiar strategy of running many genres at once rather than sequels to one franchise.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t graphics quality, which nearly everyone conceded is strong — it’s whether visibly borrowing FromSoftware’s Elden Ring/Nightreign and Monster Hunter’s design language counts as competent genre execution or a lack of original vision. That argument then pivoted into a tu quoque: several posters countered that Final Fantasy XVI’s unacknowledged debt to Devil May Cry makes Japanese studios guilty of the same thing, just less openly credited.

What’s likely to trip up readers unfamiliar with the board: the repeated claim that a “photorealistic HoYoverse game” had its servers shut down abruptly is not established fact — it’s disputed inside the thread itself, with multiple replies denying HoYoverse has ever shut down a title. That detail is worth treating as unverified rumor rather than a real precedent, since no game name or date is ever supplied to back it up.

The scariest moment in Kamaitachi no Yoru has to be when you go with Mari at night to the kitchen where the Kobayashi couple died, and behind the terrified Mari, a shadowy figure flickers through the hallway for just a split second.

    84AnonymousAug 25, 2026 16:45
It was scary precisely because of the Super Famicom's graphics. Something about 2 just feels different.

Right after you expose the true culprit, solve every mystery, restrain them, and go 'phew, glad that's over' — bang, right after that.
    102AnonymousAug 25, 2026 16:57
So I actually played 2 without ever playing the first game.
Early on it asks something like 'Did you play Kamaitachi no Yoru?' and for some reason I answered yes.
Then it asked something like 'Do you remember who the culprit was?' and I panicked — 'Uh… what do I do… guess I'll just type in some random character name from the manual' — so with zero clue I typed in 'Mikimoto,' and it replied with something like 'Oh, so you DO remember!'
Somehow I ended up spoiling the twist for myself, by myself.

    Re: #102
    Nobody asked, buddy.

    Background and Key Points

Kamaitachi no Yoru (1994) was the second entry in Chunsoft’s “Sound Novel” series, a text-and-still-image genre the studio pioneered with Otogirisou two years earlier: no voice acting, just print-style prose set to sound effects and music, with the story branching into dozens of endings depending on player choices. Its author, Abiko Takemaru, was already an established shin honkaku (“new orthodox”) mystery novelist, which is why some posters treat correctly guessing the killer as a sign of genre literacy rather than luck. The game’s snowbound pension setting is modeled on Pension Knulp, a real Western-style guesthouse in Hakuba, Nagano, that still operates today and that at least one poster in the thread has actually stayed at. The series continued with Kamaitachi no Yoru 2 (2002) and a further sequel subtitled “Shin” (Rinne, 2008), both weighed in the thread’s informal ranking of the franchise.

The thread doesn’t split over whether the original is good — almost no one disputes that — but over how much of its reputation still holds up on replay: some dismiss it as a text-mashing relic propped up by nostalgia, while others argue the scares and prose land specifically because of, not despite, the Super Famicom’s limited graphics, which forced the game to render Mari only as an unidentifiable blue silhouette.

One likely point of confusion for outside readers: post #13’s “the culprit is Yasu” meme has nothing to do with this game. Yasu comes from Portopia Serial Murder Case (1985), an earlier Yuji Horii mystery adventure that predates Kamaitachi and shares no story connection to it beyond genre and, eventually, publisher — a mix-up the thread itself corrects.

Opening Night Live for the overseas gaming event “gamescom 2026” kicked off at 2:30 AM Japan time, and comments poured into the live-reaction thread on the Hardware/Industry board throughout the show. While the Onimusha demo expansion and Xbox’s exclusive title announcements became hot topics, there were also complaints about the lack of notable titles early on, and some pointed out that Chinese games seem to be gaining more of a presence.

When something gets popular and everyone starts copying it, they all end up finishing around the same time lol

    Background and Key Points

Opening Night Live is Geoff Keighley’s pre-show for gamescom, the Cologne trade fair that is the largest consumer gaming expo in the world; Keighley (referred to in the thread only by first name) also runs The Game Awards and has run ONL as gamescom’s curtain-raiser since 2019. Cologne runs seven hours behind Japan, which is why a show timed for prime-time Europe lands at 2:30-3 AM JST for the 5ch crowd staying up to watch a live stream. The other institution looming over the thread is unstated but structurally important: Tokyo Game Show, Japan’s own industry showcase, held in September — several posters assume Nintendo is holding announcements back for a domestic Direct rather than giving anything to a German show, which is why the “nishi-kun” character (a recurring 5ch shorthand for an exaggerated Nintendo-fanboy poster, not a real named individual) gets ribbed for cheering a show with nothing playable on Switch 2.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t Onimusha or Judas hype, both of which draw uncomplicated enthusiasm — it’s whether the show is a letdown. One camp calls the trailers hollow (“amazing cinematic trailer followed by lame in-game footage,” “zero hook”), while others are simply logging what got shown without judgment. Layered onto that is the Chinese-games observation: posters float a specific claim, that Chinese studios are skipping TGS for policy reasons and redirecting announcements to gamescom, but nobody in the thread offers a source, so it reads as speculation being treated as established fact.

  • Tomino Yoshiyuki’s “Judau Surpasses Amuro” Remark Sparks Reactions — 5ch: “Judau Has the Strongest Mentality”

Director Yoshiyuki Tomino sparked discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board after making comments acknowledging Judau Ashta as a presence surpassing even Amuro and Char. The thread kicked off with a “division of strengths” theory — “Amuro for combat ability, Kamille for Newtype power, Judau for mentality” — which spiraled into a broader debate comparing the strength and Newtype abilities of pilots across the whole Gundam series.

    Amuro’s the strongest, obviously

Kycilia, who kept sending ace pilot after ace pilot to keep pace with Amuro's growth and racked up all that valuable data, is basically a god as far as the Federation's concerned.

I actually crunched the numbers just now — the combat data from Zeon's ace pilots massively boosted the Federation's MS performance.

    Re: #105
Wasn't it actually Lady Haman who treated Kamille — who was trying to reach out to her — like some vulgar nobody and cut him off?

    Background and Key Points

Yoshiyuki Tomino created the “Universal Century” Gundam lineage in three stages: the original Mobile Suit Gundam (1979, protagonist Amuro Ray, rival Char Aznable), Zeta Gundam (1985, protagonist Kamille Bidan), and Zeta Zeta (ZZ) Gundam (1986, protagonist Judau Ashta). These three works, plus the theatrical trilogy and Char’s Counterattack (1988), form the backbone of a franchise now in its fifth decade. ZZ has long occupied an awkward position in that lineage: it opened with a comedic, juvenile tone before darkening considerably, and Tomino himself reportedly wanted a “seven-part saga” of compilation films that quietly excluded ZZ altogether — a real production history, not fan speculation. Part of ZZ’s shakiness also traces to Tomino delegating episodes under a pen name during a period of overwork, which is why some fans argue it isn’t “really” his work.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t whether Judau is strong — it’s whether the three-way split of labor (Amuro’s combat skill, Kamille’s raw Newtype power, Judau’s mental stability) is a fair or even coherent way to compare protagonists built fourteen years apart under different creative pressures, with posters invoking a Maradona-vs-Messi framing to reject the exercise entirely.

What outsiders likely miss is that this isn’t really about combat rankings at all — it’s a proxy fight over ZZ’s legitimacy within the UC canon. Tomino is notorious for revising his own stated opinions about his shows years later, so a single quote elevating Judau reads to longtime fans less as settled lore and more as the latest flip in a decades-long pattern, which is exactly why the thread immediately questioned his credibility rather than taking the ranking at face value.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “Yoshiyuki Tomino Ends Up Acknowledging Judau as Surpassing Amuro and Char.”

  • “PS6 Handheld Will Make Switch 2 Look Prehistoric,” Claims Overseas Post — Skeptics Push Back

An overseas X (formerly Twitter) account posted that “the PS6’s handheld will have graphics so overwhelming it’ll make the Switch 2 look prehistoric,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s game industry board (Geha). Many replies pointed out that the poster is just a fan with no ties to gaming media or any track record in analysis, while others questioned the claim’s feasibility on technical grounds, citing price, heat output, and differences in semiconductor process.

The PS6 will be a handheld that makes the Switch 2 look primitive.

That’s because it’ll pack PS6-level graphics on a handheld screen, while the Switch 2 only has PS4 Pro-level graphics.

Nintendo will always hold onto its position thanks to its wonderful exclusive titles, but compared to PlayStation it’ll remain old-fashioned.

If the goal's set too high, just lower the goal to eye level
    Simple, right?

    Background and Key Points

Sony has never announced a PS6, let alone a PS6 handheld — the only mass-market Sony “portable” console history offers is the PS Vita (2011, killed off by 2019) and, more recently, the PS Portal (2023), which is not a standalone console but a streaming client that needs a PS5 and a network connection to run anything. The Switch 2, by contrast, is a real, shipped product: a self-contained handheld/dockable hybrid built on an Nvidia chip widely reported to be fabbed on an older (roughly Samsung 8nm-class) process, which is why posters treat “PS4 Pro-level” as a reasonable ceiling for its graphics. Bridging that to “PS6-level” performance in a fan-sized, battery-powered device is a real engineering problem: smaller nodes (3nm, 2nm) cut power draw per transistor, but cooling, battery capacity, and cost all scale badly once you chase console-class GPUs in a handheld shell — which is exactly why commenters brought up heat, price, and process generation rather than raw specs.

The thread didn’t split over whether Sony could technically build something powerful — it split over credibility: is a claim from an anonymous fan account with no journalism track record worth treating as insider information at all, versus dismissing it outright as fanboy wish-casting. Nobody in the thread engaged with the more basic fact that no PS6 hardware, portable or otherwise, has been confirmed by Sony in any form, timeline, or spec — so the entire debate about nanometers and dock designs is built on a premise the original poster invented, not on anything Sony has disclosed.

  • SIE Releases PS5 Exclusives Trailer — Turns Out There Are Only 6

On August 24, Sony Interactive Entertainment released a video titled “Only On PS5,” showcasing PS5-exclusive titles. Six games were named, including Marvel’s Wolverine, Astro Bot, Gran Turismo 7, and Ghost of Yōtei, and thread posters quickly pointed out how small that number was.

Some questioned why GT7 — which also has a PS4 version — counts as an exclusive, while others compared the count to Switch 2’s exclusive lineup, noting “PS5’s already been overtaken.”

On August 24, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) released a video titled “Only On PS5 | PS5 Games” on YouTube.

Is this video a sign that game software is shifting away from multiplatform releases toward hardware-exclusive strategies?

    Re: #103
Switch 2 has 15 released exclusives
    PS5 has 13
    Yep, it's been overtaken

    Background and Key Points

PlayStation has always leaned on third-party multiplatform software rather than a deep bench of first-party exclusives — unlike Nintendo, whose hardware sales are driven almost entirely by games that never leave its own platform. That structural difference is why a promotional reel naming only six “PS5-only” titles nearly six years after the console’s November 2020 Japan launch reads as thin to some and unremarkable to others: Sony’s business model was never built around exclusive volume in the first place, and several of its acclaimed first-party games (the God of War and Horizon series, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima) eventually shipped on PC anyway as a second revenue wave.

The thread’s actual disagreement isn’t just “six is a small number” — it’s whether Gran Turismo 7 belongs on the list at all, since it released simultaneously on PS4 and PS5 and is therefore cross-generation, not hardware-exclusive in the way Astro Bot or Ghost of Yōtei are. Posters treat that inclusion as either sloppy marketing or outright misleading.

What the thread glosses over is that “exclusive” is being used loosely throughout — some tally console-exclusive (never left PlayStation hardware) against platform-exclusive (never left PS5 specifically), and the Switch 2 comparison in the back half conflates both standards without anyone reconciling them. The cited hardware-sales figures are single-month worldwide totals, not lifetime numbers, and Sony’s shipped-versus-sold discrepancy raised in the thread reflects a longstanding industry reporting gap (shipment-to-retailers vs. confirmed consumer purchases) rather than evidence specific to PS5 alone.

  • ‘APEX Is Basically an Upgraded Splatoon,’ Claims 5ch Poster — Gets Buried in Replies: ‘Reeks of Someone Who’s Never Played It’

It started with a post declaring “I want to teach people who only play Splatoon,” which spun into an argument that APEX is the “upgraded version” of Splatoon, and Helldivers 2 is the “upgraded version” of Splat Raiders (the poster’s nickname for Splatoon’s co-op mode). The poster backed up the claim with self-reported stats like hitting the S+50 rank cap and figures like “nearly 100,000 concurrent players,” but other users fired back one after another with lines like “someone who can’t get specific” and “reeks of never having played it, lol.” The thread eventually spiraled into a broader debate about the differences between the game genres themselves.

    Re: #90
Of course — since they're different games, I never said they're exactly the same.
What I mean by 'upgrade' is that there's a good chance you'd be fine just playing that one instead.
If you haven't tried it, you should — I'm just being nice here

    Re: #92
That's exactly why you're getting mocked here — because it's off the mark

    Background and Key Points

Splatoon is Nintendo’s territory-painting shooter franchise, one of Japan’s best-selling family-friendly series, built around Turf War (color the map) and ranked modes that top out at S+50 before “X Power” numerical rankings begin — a detail the thread leans on when questioning the poster’s cited rank. Its co-op mode, Salmon Run, has players fend off waves of enemies for a shared score, which is why some posters compare it to Helldivers 2, Arrowhead’s PvE horde shooter, rather than to APEX Legends, Respawn’s free-to-play battle royale where three-player squads fight to be the last team in a shrinking zone. These are three genuinely distinct Western/Japanese titles with different business models (Splatoon is a paid Nintendo exclusive, APEX and Helldivers 2 are live-service games with different monetization), which is part of why “upgrade” as a label struck so many posters as nonsensical.

The thread didn’t split over whether the games share DNA — most agree they’re different genres — it split over whether “Area Control,” one specific APEX mode involving zone control, is close enough to Turf War to justify calling APEX an “upgraded Splatoon.” Posters increasingly focused less on that comparison and more on discrediting the OP, since he couldn’t produce specifics (average X Power, meta details) despite claiming deep experience in both games.

What outside readers likely miss: the jab about APEX on Switch being capped at 60fps isn’t trash talk, it’s a real hardware limitation versus the 120fps ceiling on PS5, which meaningfully affects competitive play — a technical detail nobody in the thread bothered to explain plainly.

  • “Why Are Japanese Game Heroines Always Beautiful Young Girls?” Sparks Debate on 5ch

A female fan of Dynasty Warriors posed a question on a 5ch message board: why are the series’ female characters, without exception, always beautiful young women in their teens to early twenties, as if stamped out of a mold?

The thread saw a flood of pushback along the lines of “these are commercial products — if there’s no demand, they won’t get made,” while others pointed to counterexamples like Elden Ring’s withered old-woman NPCs, God of War, and Horizon’s Aloy, and still others argued the characters are modeled on real historical beauties, so it’s only natural.

Why are the female characters in Japanese games always beautiful young girls???
I love the Dynasty Warriors series, but honestly I can't stand how the female characters in it are handled…
They're always, without exception, slim young women in their teens to early twenties.

Come on. Why would you put an ugly character into something you're selling as a product?

The way my taste buds see it, "young" and "beautiful girl" ARE the nasty-tasting candy.
    10AnonymousAug 25, 2026 12:10
Korean games are all curvy, not slim, so I guess they're exempt then?
    15AnonymousAug 25, 2026 12:12

Forget men — even female players won't pay money for a hag over a beautiful girl.

Just look at how poorly Bayonetta-type games sell — there's no demand for a middle-aged BBA character (Japanese slang for "old hag").

Aren't the male characters in otome games mostly young pretty boys too? Same thing.
    21AnonymousAug 25, 2026 12:17
It's simply because there's no demand. If there were demand, they'd be making host-fantasy games too. That's just how it is.

Given the time period these games are set in, basically nobody's overweight, so slim is the norm. And most of the beauties are based on actual historical beauties or the wives of great men, so it checks out. It's not like they made some grubby farmer's wife a playable character.
    44AnonymousAug 25, 2026 12:41
Maybe she's a "youthful witch" (a woman who looks far younger than her real age). It's rude to ask a woman her age, after all. Ii Naotora looks like a minor, but going by how she talks about worrying over "Naomasa," she's apparently actually in her 30s.

    95AnonymousAug 25, 2026 15:09
Games are basically the one place you get to control a young, good-looking avatar, right? Dragging in weird "realism" doesn't make it more fun. Imagine a light-novel protagonist with superhuman powers, except instead he's got a totally average body, no special abilities, no brilliant intellect to escape danger, isn't some reincarnated hero saving the world every other chapter — just a poop-producing machine who commutes to the office, has zero romantic encounters, works all day, comes home, eats, and sleeps. Who's reading that novel? Who's playing that game?
    98AnonymousAug 25, 2026 15:12
    Re: #95
There are plenty of popular dramas and manga about some middle-aged guy just eating a meal, so depending on how it's written, that could actually work.

    Background and Key Points

Dynasty Warriors (Shin Sangoku Musou in Japan) is Koei Tecmo’s hack-and-slash franchise built on the 14th-century Chinese epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, running since 2000 across dozens of entries. Its female roster — Diaochan, Da Qiao, Xiao Qiao, Yue Ying among them — draws on the “Four Great Beauties” of Chinese legend and lore, figures with almost no surviving physical description beyond later folklore calling them beautiful. 5ch, the successor to 2channel, is Japan’s largest anonymous forum network, and threads like this one are a regular venue for gripes about anime-adjacent character design. For readers unfamiliar with the genre, it’s worth knowing that “beautiful young woman” character design is not unique to this series — it’s the industry default across Japanese, Chinese, and Korean commercial games, which several posters raised as if it settled the argument.

The thread didn’t really split over whether young-and-beautiful characters exist — everyone agreed they do. It split over whether that’s a defensible design choice or a lazy one: one camp treated it as simple market logic (no demand, no product), pointing to Returnal’s aged Selene or Bayonetta’s poor sales as cautionary tales, while another camp cited Elden Ring, God of War, and Horizon Zero Dawn as proof that non-idealized women can headline successful games.

What nobody addressed is that the male cast gets the same idealization — handsome, youthful warriors — which undercuts the “historical accuracy” defense raised repeatedly, since there’s no more documentary basis for the men’s appearances than the women’s. It’s a stylistic convention being retrofitted as historical fidelity.

Sony has globally announced its new Android smartphone, the “Xperia 10 VIII.” On the forum thread, comments split between frustration that the chipset is nearly unchanged from the previous generation, and steady support for it as one of the few remaining models with microSD card support.

Sony has globally announced its new Android smartphone, the “Xperia 10 VIII” (Xperia Ten Mark Eight). No Japan release has been confirmed at this time.

It comes with 8GB of RAM, plus a virtual memory feature that lets up to 6GB of internal storage be used as extra working memory.

The chipset is Qualcomm’s “Snapdragon 6 Gen 3.” The device measures 153×72×8.3mm and weighs 168g. It has 128GB of storage and supports microSD cards up to 2TB. It also features IP68 water and dust resistance.

    Re: #80
    It's inconvenient, right
I'm still using the 5 III

    Background and Key Points

The Xperia 10 line sits at the bottom of Sony Mobile’s three-tier lineup — flagship “1” series, mid-tier “5” series, and this entry-level “10” series — so “Mark VIII” simply means it’s the eighth annual refresh of the budget model, not some flagship’s eighth generation. That matters for reading the spec sheet: a “Snapdragon 6 Gen 3” chip and 8GB RAM (extendable via a swap-to-storage trick, not real RAM) are entirely normal for this tier, and Sony has priced this line closer to ¥70,000+ in Japan historically despite the mid-range hardware, since carriers there bundle it into two-year installment plans rather than selling it as a true budget phone. No Japan release or price has actually been confirmed yet, which several posts gloss over while already speculating about a sub-¥50,000 tag.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t Sony-love versus Sony-hate — it’s whether an unchanged chipset generation-over-generation is a dealbreaker or beside the point. One camp treats the flat performance as proof Sony is coasting; the other treats it as irrelevant next to the microSD slot (up to 2TB) and IP68 rating, since Samsung, Google, and Apple have all abandoned expandable storage on their current lines, leaving Xperia and Sharp’s AQUOS as nearly the only mainstream holdouts.

One thing the thread never grapples with: the “it’s a Japanese phone, so it’s safer with my payment data” argument gets challenged only in passing. Sony Mobile still ships stock Android with Google Mobile Services and Google Pay integration underneath, so the “domestic OS” security premise posters lean on doesn’t really hold up against the actual software stack running on the device.
