On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a thread noting that Switch 2’s weekly sales have fallen to roughly half of the original Switch’s peak sparked a heated, occasionally testy discussion.
The talk spiraled into comparisons of PS5’s worldwide cumulative sales and Nintendo vs. Sony earnings, with opinions clashing — “it’s hopeless unless they cut the price,” “does Nintendo even plan to do anything about this?”
The original Switch's weekly sales record:
apparently it never dropped below 40,000+ units even during its 2nd-year summer break (July-Aug).
Forget July-August — it's below every single week's sales.
Oof 🤦
Meanwhile Switch 2 is completely dead in Europe.
Japan's starting to look shaky too.
The real PS5 number is 40 million.
So what was PS5's worldwide cumulative total at that same roughly 1-year-2-month mark?
Don't tell me it's below the now-slumping Switch 2…
Launched Nov. 2020, and as of March 2021 it was at about 7.8 million worldwide… that's barely selling at all lol
Nintendo and Sony should both go all-in on PC and mobile.
Not gonna happen 🤦
Do people really think they'll just sit there twiddling their thumbs going "ugh, it's not selling" forever lol
Wasn't "Raiders" supposed to be their countermeasure?
It just barely moved any hardware, that's all…
Nice.
That's peak echo-chamber energy right there.
Put more bluntly, nothing will work unless they revise the price.
That's the "Ambassador effect" for you (a nod to the 3DS's early price-cut compensation program).
Price isn't really the issue though?
PS5, which is cheaper than Switch 2, isn't selling either.
Already sold.
100 million worldwide.
Gave up.
Per Re: #49.
Software's not selling though, is it?
Ah, that's a shame.
Can't refute that, huh!!
Why would "I gave up" need a rebuttal lol
Huh? Wasn't your whole point "Nintendo's obviously going to break out of this slump!"?
Isn't it distribution that's cornered? They've been screwing up nonstop ever since the bomb threat.
Sony's given up on selling software and switched to a slash-and-burn model — making money off online fees and PS Plus instead.
It's profitable now, but there's no future in it.
Meanwhile Nintendo can't even pull off the slash-and-burn model, because the hardware isn't selling lol
So the premise here is that Nintendo will never make any more software and will never touch pricing except to raise it, right?
And you replied "yep, that's right" to that — so isn't this conversation already over?
Even counting Nintendo's low-overhead, high-margin income like movies, USJ, and Pokémon Centers, they're still losing to Sony's gaming division alone lol
So why does that mean giving up on Japan lol
Use those profits to make Japanese users happy instead lol
They're using that money to make stuff like Concord lolol
Or so I hear lolol
I'd get it on some other country's board, but seeing people cheerlead Sony's earnings on a Japanese forum just looks ridiculous.
That's correct.
This is happening because you're running away from the argument.
Isn't that for everyone else to judge, not you?
Re: #97
Just booted up my PC, so I'll take as many rebuttals as you've got.
The conclusion's already been reached lol
I didn't reply because I wanted to argue.
I haven't even denied anything, to begin with.

Re: #1
W-H-A-T I-S "Kobon"???
Background and Key Points
Switch 2’s launch price was ¥49,980, and Nintendo positioned it as a premium successor to the original Switch, which shipped in March 2017 at ¥29,980 and went on to sell over 150 million units worldwide, making it one of the best-selling consoles in history. The original Switch’s weekly sales famously never dipped below roughly 40,000 units even during its second summer, a low-demand season for Japan (many households defer big purchases to year-end and new-fiscal-year gift cycles). “Kobon” in the thread title is shorthand for a “small box” bundle/discount promotion Nintendo ran to try to reinvigorate sales — the original poster’s joke is that even that bump wasn’t enough to keep Switch 2 above the old console’s worst weeks.
The thread’s real fault line isn’t whether Switch 2 sales have slowed — everyone agrees they have — but whether that decline is a crisis unique to Nintendo or simply the industry-wide new normal for console hardware. One camp treats PS5’s 100 million cumulative figure as proof Sony is thriving and Nintendo is uniquely struggling; others push back by pointing out PS5 had barely sold 7.8 million units at the same point in its lifecycle, which undercuts any apples-to-apples comparison. A second dispute is over what “fixing” the problem would even look like: price cuts, more software, or accepting a Sony-style pivot to service revenue.
What’s likely to confuse outside readers is that PS5’s 100 million figure spans nearly six years globally, while Switch 2 is barely a year old — comparing raw cumulative totals across such different console ages is misleading, and no one in the thread actually adjusts for that. Also uncorrected: Nintendo’s hardware margins and revenue mix (Pokémon, theme parks, movies) differ structurally from Sony’s software/services-driven model, so “losing” to Sony’s gaming division on paper doesn’t necessarily mean Nintendo’s console strategy has failed.
