  • PS5 Emulator Now Runs on Xbox Series X Too — 5ch: ‘Turns Out the Small Game Library Was Sony’s Best Anti-Piracy Tool LOL’

An emulator capable of running PS5 games has reportedly gotten working on an actual Xbox Series X console, sparking a stir on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. On PC, reports say the frame rate for the Demon’s Souls Remake emulation jumped dramatically within just a week, drawing attention to how fast development is moving. Some in the thread argued that backlash over Sony’s reported plan last month to phase out the PS5’s disc drive helped fuel the emulator’s development, while others pushed back hard against posts that seemed to justify pirating games, leaving the thread divided.

Guess the performance is so low even a Series S can handle it, huh.

    11AnonymousSep 20, 2026 12:06
Basically here's how it went down:

・PS5 has no must-play exclusives, so nobody bothers building an emulator

    ↓

Sony pisses everyone off by killing the disc drive, so spite-driven devs start building one

    ↓

Turns out it's easy to emulate, up and running within months

    ↓

Now it's ported to Xbox too ← we are here

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Commenters in the thread point to backlash against Sony’s recently announced plan to discontinue the PS5’s disc drive as the trigger behind the emulator’s sudden progress. Console emulators typically take years to develop because of the work involved in cracking encryption keys and reverse-engineering internal architecture, but posters noted that the PS5’s thin exclusive lineup had inadvertently kept developer interest away, functioning as a kind of unintentional “countermeasure.” Toward the end of the thread, however, opinion split between posts defending illegal copying of games and others condemning that stance as “justifying a crime” — a reminder that praise for the emulator’s technical achievement can easily get tangled up with the separate issue of copyright infringement. The reports of it running are a technical story in their own right, but actually playing PS5 games this way still carries legal risk depending on how the files were obtained.

  • Fire Emblem: Myriad Blossoms User Score Bounces Back from 8.0 to 9.2 After Fake Reviews Purged

The Metacritic user score for Fire Emblem: Myriad Blossoms became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board after it briefly sank to 8.0 amid a wave of negative reviews right after launch, then recovered to 9.2 once posts judged to be fake reviews were removed. Posters noted this echoes a past pattern where Nintendo titles’ scores rise once fake reviews are purged, while Sony titles’ scores tend to fall in the same situation, and the thread debated why. At the same time, some questioned whether the removal criteria are applied evenly across all games, or whether only famous titles get this kind of preferential treatment.

Background and key points of this discussion

Metacritic user scores are prone to “review bombing,” where users flood a newly released game with a wave of 0s or 10s; when the site’s moderation detects an unnatural posting pattern, it may remove those reviews after the fact. Whether a score rises or falls after such a purge simply depends on which direction the deleted reviews had skewed it — there’s no fixed rule that Nintendo titles go up while Sony titles go down. In the thread, many posters pointed to past examples involving Sony titles and suspected organized manipulation by a specific fanbase, but this is speculation based on the board’s own observations, not confirmation of any official Metacritic policy that treats different fan communities differently. Some also questioned whether cleanup only happens for famous titles, but since Metacritic doesn’t publish its removal thresholds or operating criteria, that point remains unverified.

  • PS6 GPU Specs Leaked, Analysis Claims 80 TFLOPS Effective Power — 5ch: “The Real Issue Is the Price”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (ゲハ) board introducing a performance analysis of the custom GPU believed to be headed for the PS6. According to the leaked info, the RDNA 5-generation GPU has a TDP of 160W and 54 compute units, with raw compute performance of about 40 TFLOPS — but thanks to a “Dual Issue” feature that processes two instructions per clock, effective performance is said to reach 68-80 TFLOPS, surpassing the RX 9070 XT. Rather than focusing on the raw numbers, many replies voiced concerns about the actual retail price and the software lineup, with commenters recalling how past PlayStation consoles have touted inflated performance figures at launch, leading to a wave of skepticism toward this leak as well.

    1AnonymousSep 20, 2026 08:08
An analysis of the custom GPU specifications for the PlayStation 6, based on the RDNA 5 architecture, has revealed a TDP of 160W and 54 compute units. With a clock speed reaching 3.6GHz, each individual compute unit in the console GPU outperforms an RX 9070 XT unit by 15-20%.
In path tracing workloads, this console GPU delivers 70-100% higher performance than the RX 9070 XT. Thanks to the "Dual Issue" execution feature, theoretical peak performance reaches 68-80 TFLOPS, placing it between the GeForce RTX 5080 (56.3 TFLOPS) and the GeForce RTX 5090 (104 TFLOPS).
Thanks to the advanced Dual Issue functionality and the machine-learning-based scaling technology "PSSR 3," effective performance is boosted to 35-50% above the official spec figures. Additionally, sophisticated AI-driven optimization helps offset the limitations of the 160-bit memory interface.

That depends on the release year.
Once next-gen Radeon chips ship, prices naturally drop — and it can't go into a console until it does, so it's basically waiting on that.
That's also why the Switch 2 took so long to arrive: they were waiting for the chip to become last-gen and cheap.
Bottom line, console hardware is fated to only ship once its chip is already outdated.

Multi-frame generation is probably off the table too.
    Even the PS5 Pro's PSSR2 didn't adopt the older frame-generation tech.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Dual Issue” refers to a mechanism where a GPU’s execution units process two instructions per clock in parallel, and as commenters in the thread pointed out, real-world performance doesn’t simply double to match the theoretical figure — that depends on instruction dependencies and how much idle execution capacity is actually available. TFLOPS figures represent theoretical peak compute performance only and don’t scale in a simple, direct way with actual in-game rendering performance; that’s evident from the PS3’s history, where Sony touted “1.8 TFLOPS” at launch even though the RSX GPU’s real-world effective performance fell well short of that. The numbers discussed here are, at this stage, still an analyst’s estimate and projection, not PS6’s confirmed official specifications. It’s also worth noting that actual retail pricing tends to be heavily affected by rising memory and storage costs, and the thread’s point that raw performance figures alone don’t tell you much about a product’s real appeal rings true given the history of console hardware pricing.

  • PlayStation Sell-Off Rumors: 5ch Users Seriously Guess Who’d Buy It

A thread on the Hardware/Industry (Geha) board sparked speculation about potential buyers amid growing chatter that Sony’s PlayStation business might be headed for a sale or withdrawal. The evidence cited: plans to drop the disc drive, the abrupt termination of the contract with Kojima Productions, only a small handful of first-party titles planned for the next generation, and a string of stock sales by executives — including CEO Hiroki Totoki and Rob Stringer — since July 2026. Posters floated specific names like Middle Eastern investment funds, Chinese companies, and Samsung, while others argued “they’ll probably just drop hardware and keep the platform” or “no buyer will show up and it’ll just fade away,” leaving the predictions all over the map.

The physical hardware business probably can't be sold off the way VAIO (Sony's PC brand) or Bravia (Sony's TV brand) were, since it's basically a customized gaming PC inside.
What a Chinese buyer would actually want is the PlayStation® brand itself (like with VAIO), but it's hard to imagine Sony exiting gaming entirely, so they'd keep the PlayStation® name as a platform.
The studios are too tied to their own identity to be easy to sell off too, so isn't the real plan just repeated layoffs until it quietly fades away 'due to popular demand'?

Background and Key Points on This Story

This “sale” speculation isn’t an official announcement — it’s simply 5ch users piecing together circumstantial evidence, such as the plan to drop the disc drive, the severed contract with a popular studio, and a thin lineup of upcoming first-party titles, and speculating from there. It’s true that Sony executives have reportedly been selling off their own company stock in a string of moves since July 2026, but executives selling shares they hold is not unusual in itself, and it isn’t direct proof of a struggling business or an impending sale. Posters in the thread were split on their theories — “a Middle Eastern fund is the favorite,” “they’ll drop hardware but keep the platform,” “no buyer will emerge so it just fades away” — without settling on a single conclusion. What readers should keep in mind is that, as of September 2026, Sony has made no official statement about selling or withdrawing from the PlayStation business; this article is simply introducing a prediction game happening on a forum.

  • Wolverine’s Tracking Gas Gets an Update — Fans Say It’s ‘Thicker’ Now

In the PS5 title “Wolverine,” the “gas” effect that shows the direction of a tracked target has been updated. Before-and-after comparison images posted on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board show the gas now appears thicker and more continuous. Posters have long pointed out that the effect looks like a fart, and the update only strengthened that impression, drawing plenty of reactions. At the same time, some comments moved past the visual and questioned the game design itself — asking why a guidance system that keeps players from straying off the path is even necessary — splitting the discussion between the effect’s appearance and the broader quality of the game’s construction.

Because if you stray off the set route, you can easily wander into a glitched/out-of-bounds area

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The ‘tracking gas’ is a navigation effect that uses a smoke-like visual to show players which direction to head — a mechanic that’s not unusual in exploration-based action games. This update made the effect more continuous and denser, which only reinforced the look that posters had long joked resembled a fart. The thread split along two lines: lighter comments focused on the effect’s appearance itself, and more pointed criticism aimed at the underlying game design — namely, why a guidance system is needed at all to keep players from straying off the path. The former is closer to a minor request for a visual improvement, while the latter ties into deeper criticism of the game’s linear structure and its measures to prevent players from entering broken/buggy areas. It’s worth noting that focusing solely on the effect’s color or appearance risks missing the real point of the discussion.

  • “Out of Remake Ammo”: Square Enix’s Strategy Sparks Debate on 5ch

In recent years, Square Enix has repeatedly turned to remaking its back catalog — the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, and more. On a thread that popped up in 5ch’s “Nanmo Jikkyo G” board, frustration over the lack of new titles amid this ongoing trend led one poster to declare that the company is “already running out of remake ammo.” The thread saw opinions split over several points: how Square Enix’s approach compares to Capcom, another company leaning heavily on remakes; whether the HD-2D style is a worthy technique or not; and wishlist picks for the next classic to get remade, with titles like Astro Noka and Valkyrie Profile coming up.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Since kicking things off with the FF7 Remake in 2020, Square Enix has kept up a steady stream of reworked older titles — FF7 Rebirth, Live A Live, the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, and others — leaving users quick to note how comparatively few new IPs have been announced. The thread split into two camps when comparing Square Enix to Capcom, another company leaning heavily on remakes: some argued Square Enix comes up short because Capcom is landing hits with brand-new titles at the same time, while others pushed back, skeptical of that praise for Capcom in the first place. There was also a gap in temperature around the HD-2D approach, with some seeing it as an efficient, cost-conscious technique and others viewing it as corner-cutting compared to a full 3D remake. It’s worth noting — though it wasn’t raised in the thread itself — that this remake-driven strategy has also been described in the company’s recent earnings reports as a pillar of revenue built on leveraging existing IP, meaning this isn’t purely a matter of fan sentiment but a deliberate business choice as well.

  • Switch/PC Gamer Buys a PS5 Controller for Steam — 5ch: ‘That Cursed Controller With Backwards ABXY’

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board features a post from a Switch-and-PC gamer who bought a PS5 “DualSense” controller just to use with Steam. The focus of the discussion: the age-old headache of confirm-button placement, where Nintendo Switch controllers put “confirm” on B, while Xbox, PS5, and other XInput-style controllers put it on A or Cross (✕). Some posters pointed out that “you can remap ABXY in Steam’s settings,” while others countered that “in some games, the on-screen button prompts still don’t change” — sparking a debate over just how much Steam Input can actually fix.

    1AnonymousSep 19, 2026 12:43
When I'm playing with an Xbox controller, I think 'this should be A for confirm' but the on-screen prompt says B — so I go to press B instead, and then A makes me jump.
The worst is in action games where you need to instantly counter with X, and you have to figure out whether it means 'the physical position of the real X button (which is Y on this pad)' or 'press whatever's labeled X on this controller' — it gets so confusing.
PS5's symbol buttons (○✕△□) have nothing to do with letters, so you just memorize button position + symbol and press exactly what's shown. Way more comfortable.
    2AnonymousSep 19, 2026 12:44

Ah, I see — you mean the skills mapped to RB + a face button are shown by their up/down/left/right position, so they end up mismatched?

If that's the issue, Steam has a setting for that too.
I think it's called "Button Guide Code" — a feature that only remaps the buttons while a specific button is held down,
so you can make it so the ABXY layout reverts back to normal while RB is held.
    29AnonymousSep 19, 2026 13:09
To be precise, Steam's settings let you swap buttons around,
and on top of that, most games let you remap buttons again in their own settings — so you can customize most of it.

That's an oddly obsessive hang-up (mocking it as almost paranoid/delusional-tier, 5ch slang).
It's on Sony for never putting in the effort to popularize a format like XInput — that's exactly why some games don't support DualSense or its UI at all.
And now that they've pulled out of PC multiplatform releases, it'll only get worse. Plus it's got a battery crammed in, making it needlessly heavy.

    Re: #99
    It's the exact opposite.
Steam's default is also confirm-on-bottom-button, so a PS controller works as-is and the on-screen prompts change correctly in most games.
With a Switch controller, the position flips and causes confusion.
That's exactly what OP (Re: #1) was talking about.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The position of the “confirm” button on a gamepad has a different history depending on the manufacturer. Under the XInput standard used by Xbox and PS5, A (bottom) or Cross/✕ (bottom) became the standard confirm button, but Nintendo has kept B (bottom) as confirm even on Switch — and this discrepancy has confused PC gamers for years. Steam does have settings that let you change how ABXY looks and is mapped for each controller, but as posters in the thread pointed out, if a game itself isn’t built to automatically switch its on-screen button prompts based on the physical controller type, the displayed prompts and the actual inputs can stay mismatched even after changing the settings. Differing understanding of exactly where the technical line falls — how much Steam’s settings can actually paper over — is what drove the disagreement in the thread.

  • Capcom Says Ascendance Is ‘Wilds’ True Successor’ — Fans Split

In a developer interview, Capcom described Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance as the “true successor” to Wilds, saying they built on what worked and fixed what didn’t. The remark sparked debate on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, with posters questioning whether the game had actually improved or whether Capcom had simply reverted unpopular changes back to old-game standards. Discussion also covered revisions to monster hitzone (“nikushitsu”) notation and the Switch 2 version’s performance, leaving opinions divided.

◆ The goal: a “true successor to Wilds”

    — In developing Ascendance, what strengths from the main Wilds game did you want to build on, and what did you feel needed the most reflection?

Hiraoka: When we kicked off the project, the concept I set out was “I want to create a true successor to Wilds.” Starting from that idea, our first priority was to build on the good parts — the things players enjoyed, the things we made that genuinely resonated. The other side was to thoroughly reexamine and improve anything that could have been better, including things we noticed from your feedback. Doing both, we felt, was how we could achieve a true successor to Wilds.

I'd say it's more like XVI.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

When Wilds first launched, complaints centered on the PC version’s heavy performance demands, crashes on PS5, and a story structure that restricted players from straying off the main path. Ascendance is positioned as the fix for those issues, but thread posters raised specific examples — reverting hitzone (“nikushitsu”) notation to Rise-era standards, while the Seikret mount and certain map layouts stayed unchanged — leading many to argue this was less an improvement and more a rollback of unpopular changes. Debate over the Switch 2 version’s performance was similarly split, with some posters assuming it was downgraded without ever checking the hardware themselves, others pushing back on that as a misunderstanding, and even some confusion over the actual framerate figures involved. Overall, there’s a clear gap between the developers’ talk of a “true successor” and how players actually experience the game.

  • What Game Should Two Guys in Their 40s Play for a Night Together? 5ch Weighs In

A man in his 40s who’s about to stay over at an old college friend’s house asked 5ch for recommendations on PS5 or Switch 2 games the two of them could enjoy after a few drinks. Given that his friend’s place has two TVs, suggestions ranged from split-screen co-op titles like It Takes Two and Split Fiction to online co-op games like Earth Defense Force and Ghost Recon. It remained unclear, though, whether there were actually two consoles as well, leading to some crossed wires between recommendations that assumed two screens and those that assumed two systems. Plenty of posters also pushed nostalgic picks like Monster Hunter and Momotetsu, and the thread got lively with tangents about why certain titles don’t come up more often and why others tend to start fights.

Monster Hunter isn't the kind of game you can just jump into together right away.
You have to progress through the story and learn increasingly complex, fighting-game-like weapon controls before you can actually play together.
…It's easy to see why Monster Hunter's popularity has faded.
Added complexity just drives newcomers away.

I played a bit of the Super Bomberman Collection, and I could see it getting pretty hype if you played it with a friend.

    Background and Key Points

What stood out was that even though it’s all lumped together as “two-player games,” split-screen co-op titles (like It Takes Two and Split Fiction) and online co-op games that only work with multiple TVs and multiple consoles (like Monster Hunter and Ghost Recon) are actually two very different conditions — and that distinction never quite got sorted out amid the replies. The original poster only mentioned “two TVs” and never confirmed whether there were actually two PS5s or two Switch 2s as well. As one reply points out, having two screens and having two consoles are separate issues, and mixing them up leads to recommended titles that can’t actually be played the way suggested. Another key thread is the view that sequels to titles played back in one’s college days end up being the most fun after all — Monster Hunter comes up by name, while another reply notes how the series has grown harder for newcomers to jump into as its combat controls have become more complex, showing this isn’t just simple nostalgia. Momotetsu getting singled out as a “game that starts fights” also comes down less to competitive balance than to its distinctly personal mechanic of dumping the Poverty God on your opponent.

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board argued that Chinese companies stole the spotlight at a recent robotics expo. In industrial robotics, Japanese manufacturers like Fanuc are still frequently name-checked — but posters pointed out that Chinese firms are now offering to automate entire production lines, even whole factories, as a single package. Some noted that Japanese-made parts are still used in the joints of humanoid robots, complicating any simple verdict on who’s ahead. Others countered that most humanoid robot demos are remote-operated with limited real autonomy, while still others argued China wins on the balance of price and performance — leaving the thread split.

It's a real-world usability problem — the quality and precision aren't even in the same league.

Same with those restaurant serving robots: once they break down, there's no support, so they just end up parked as decorations in a corner or by the entrance.
    11AnonymousSep 19, 2026 13:33
China's already got a labor surplus, robots are pointless there.
    14AnonymousSep 19, 2026 13:39
Looks like we're still a long way from inventing Doraemon.

What features would a robot need before it counts as "basically Doraemon"?

Japan's strength is industrial robots, stuff like Fanuc, right?
    24AnonymousSep 19, 2026 13:48
    Re: #18
    Even in industrial robots,
    China's already overtaken us.
Japan makes robots that are bolted to a line.
China… sells the entire factory, turned into a robot, as the product itself.
    It's a completely different scale.
    30AnonymousSep 19, 2026 13:52
    Re: #24
    Thing is, industrial robots
    aren't built as general-purpose systems —
they're custom-built for one process at a time.

So if you turn the whole thing into a robot, what can that factory actually produce?
    33AnonymousSep 19, 2026 13:56
    Re: #30
It starts with the factory owner's request — "I want this factory to produce that."
    China designs it,
then ships a fully automated line — basically the whole factory — built exactly to the customer's order.
    34AnonymousSep 19, 2026 13:59
Robot anime is actually easier business now than releasing real robots kids can't afford — Gundam's about the only holdout.
Since the genre shifted to card-game anime, in 10-20 years China will be the world's strongest in robot anime too.

    Re: #30
We're already at the point where robots build robots — China's even got fully automated, start-to-finish factories… though if you only care about short-term revenue, using human labor can still work out cheaper.
    28AnonymousSep 19, 2026 13:50
Feels like robots are headed for the same fate as home appliances.
Given a choice between a perfect, 100-point robot that's expensive
and an 80-point robot that's cheap,
the cheap one wins every time.
That's exactly how Japan lost the appliance market.
    32AnonymousSep 19, 2026 13:54
    Re: #28
    Exactly that…
    For example,
if a Japanese smartphone with no AI costs ¥150,000
while a Chinese smartphone with AI costs ¥50,000,
most people are going to buy the latter.

The same dynamic is brutal news for manufacturers still selling old-style hardware — cars included.
The most fatal part is that if you're only starting physical-AI research now, you have to begin from square one on how to even collect data — meanwhile the US, China, and others have already built data collection into a huge range of products, and they're using that data to train and evolve physical AI before selling it.

    China's the one that's a 100 out of 100 AND cheap.
    40AnonymousSep 19, 2026 14:09
I've had the impression Japan's been losing ground to China in robotics for the past 5-10 years already, so none of this is exactly news.

China's bubble already burst — it's only downhill from here, right?

Coming from the guy whose "China's economy is collapsing" line has been the same copypasta for a quarter century now — like the annual over-hyped praise for Beaujolais Nouveau (a wine released yearly with formulaic "best vintage ever" reviews).
Also, that property bubble was popped on purpose, since it had sent housing prices through the roof — and doing so actually stabilized rents and everything else.

Japan's focus isn't on autonomy — it's on putting teleoperated manipulator arms to practical use, for surgery and extreme environments.

Praising Chinese robots is like praising a custom PC builder for buying off-the-shelf parts and screwing them together.
Same goes for the software — most of the flashy demos are secretly being puppeted by a human behind the scenes.
It's not like they're autonomously judging situations and pulling off anything complex.
They can run, and perform pre-set reactions. That's about it.

    That's not true at all.
In the electrical, mechanical, and information engineering labs at Japan's solidly-ranked universities, AI image recognition and haptics/tactile feedback are the hottest research topics right now — Japan's technical level is as high as ever.
    85AnonymousSep 19, 2026 15:28
Wowing people with a humanoid shape is a very on-the-nose set of priorities.
Japan still isn't putting much focus into humanoid form, since there's not much practical point to it yet.
    88AnonymousSep 19, 2026 15:33
    Re: #85
A "humanoid" robot is really just a mobility module (it doesn't have to be two legs)
with two robot arms bolted on (they don't have to be two arms either) — so there's basically zero corporate demand or practical use for it.
Right now there's still more demand for pet robots.
    87AnonymousSep 19, 2026 15:30
You know how there could be a drone that just wanders around the room,

Is there a drone like that — basically a pet —
that doesn't do anything in particular, just wanders around the room?

There's probably a welfare angle to it, and whether it works as an actual business is another question, but I was genuinely impressed by the initiative where people with disabilities remotely operate a robot from home to run a café.

Background and key points of this discussion

Industrial robotics has long been a field where Japanese manufacturers like Fanuc and Yaskawa Electric hold a leading share of the global market, and that strength hasn’t changed. What’s drawing attention at recent expos, though, is the rise of Chinese manufacturers building humanoid robots and offering fully automated production-line packages — echoing the same “catch up on price and performance” pattern seen earlier with smartphones and EVs. The thread’s complaint that “most of the demos are remote-operated” is a criticism that’s dogged the humanoid robot industry more broadly for a while now — how autonomous something looks and how finished it actually is don’t always line up. It’s also true that Japanese manufacturers are still widely used for core components like joints, meaning the real divide between “those who assemble and sell” and “those who make the precision parts” runs deeper than what any single expo’s buzz suggests.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad News] Japan = robots? Turns out that’s a myth — Chinese manufacturers dominate the expo 🤖”.
