  • Seibu Shibuya Closes After 58 Years, Crowds Chant “Seibu! Shibuya!” in Farewell

Seibu Shibuya, the department store in Udagawa-cho, Shibuya, closed its doors after 58 years of history, with crowds chanting “Seibu! Shibuya!” on its final day. In the 5ch News Speed+ thread discussing the Asahi Shimbun report, posters traded nostalgic memories of the cultural presence of the Saison Group under Seiji Tsutsumi, debated the bright and dark sides of redevelopment projects like Shibuya Hands and Sakura Stage, and pointed out that the department store format itself is becoming unsustainable as the middle class shrinks. Opinions were also split on whether Shibuya’s redevelopment counts as a success or a failure.

Even among department stores it was a couple tiers below Isetan or Mitsukoshi/Matsuzakaya. Probably peaked back when it had a Loft inside.

Department stores are polarizing as the middle class vanishes — places like Mitsukoshi and Isetan have gone all in on big spenders and inbound tourists, but that's honestly loaded with ways to fail.
Inbound tourism evaporates the instant the yen strengthens, and the big-spending elderly crowd keeps shrinking as it ages out. They cut loose the middle class that used to prop them up, so now they can't withstand even a mild downturn — and for the generation with no childhood memory of ever going to a department store, it won't even register as an option once they're grown. At best they'll hit the basement food hall, or just walk through.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Seibu Shibuya was operated by the Saison Group, a separate company with no capital ties to Seibu Railway/the Seibu Group, which owns the Saitama Seibu Lions baseball team. It’s well known that founders and brothers Seiji and Yoshiaki Tsutsumi had different mothers and a famously strained relationship — a distinction that comes up repeatedly in the thread, since sharing the “Seibu” name alone makes the two easy to confuse. Meanwhile, the recent struggles of department stores are said to stem from stores that failed to hold onto middle-class customers being weeded out, unlike chains such as Mitsukoshi Isetan that have specialized in inbound tourists and wealthy clientele — a trend that overlaps with the split in opinion over whether Shibuya’s overall redevelopment counts as a success or a failure.

  • Last Year’s Batting Champion Kaito Kozono Cut Loose — 5ch: “Fastest Release in League History”

On October 1, the Hiroshima Toyo Carp notified four players — infielder Kaito Kozono (26), infielder Masaya Yano, infielder Seita Maekawa, and outfielder Shunsuke Tamura — that the club would not renew their contracts for next season. Kozono won the batting title last year as part of a batting “double crown,” and also suited up for Japan at this year’s WBC, making him a core player — so the notice from the club is being treated as highly unusual. On 5ch threads, posts expressing shock at the sudden announcement poured in, mixed with comments recapping Kozono’s background and school history, and speculation about where he might sign next.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Each year, NPB roster-cut (non-renewal) notices become official starting October 1, with clubs typically announcing in bulk, around this time, which players won’t have their contracts renewed for the following season. Kozono won the batting title last year as part of a batting “double crown” and also represented Japan at this year’s WBC — an accomplished player by any measure — which is why his being included in this round of notices is being seen as an unusual call. Within the thread, beyond the reason the club officially gave for the non-renewal, many posts hinted at some kind of behind-the-scenes trouble, but no evidence was offered for any claim of criminal involvement, and nothing of that sort is confirmed by the official announcement. At the same time, other posts defended him, insisting he “didn’t do it,” so opinions remain split. As for where he might land next, several team names came up, including the Hanshin Tigers and SoftBank Hawks, but all of it remains speculation.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Hiroshima] Shockwave! Kaito Kozono cut despite batting double crown and WBC appearance last year — an unusual notice.”

  • ‘Set Him Free From Nagoya’ — Chunichi’s Roster-Cut Notice Skips Right Over Ko Neo’s Name

On September 29, 2026, Chunichi Dragons manager Kazuki Inoue announced he would step down at the end of the season, and at the same time revealed that six players had been designated for release. The list included 2023 second-round pick, pitcher Keishi Tsuda, but notably absent was first-round pick Ko Neo, who has also been exploring a conversion to pitcher. On a 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread, opinions split between “wouldn’t he actually be better off cut loose and free to find his own way?” and “there’s still hope — get him moved via the Active Player Draft,” with the discussion spreading into broader criticism of Chunichi’s player-development system as a whole.

    10/1/2026

On September 29, Chunichi Dragons manager Kazuki Inoue announced he would resign at season’s end, taking responsibility for finishing in the league’s bottom tier for a second straight year. At the same time, as if trimming the roster ahead of October’s draft meeting, the club announced that six players would not be re-signed for next season — the so-called “roster cut” notice.

Among those told they were “let go” was Keishi Tsuda, the club’s 2023 second-round pick, along with other players in their mid-20s who were once expected to break out — a fresh reminder of just how unforgiving the pro ranks can be. More roster trimming is expected once the Climax Series wraps up, but some fans are, ironically, let down that this particular cut list didn’t include one name in particular.

He just doesn't have what it takes to hold things together when he's off his game, so he can't be trusted in a winning-pattern role.

Even if it's just mop-up work, I think they should trade him somewhere he'll actually get used.
I don't want to see him left to rot on the bench.

    Background and Key Points

Ko Neo entered pro baseball as the Dragons’ first-round pick in the 2019 draft as a shortstop, and has since bounced between infield, outfield, and now a possible pitching conversion. According to figures cited in the thread, in one season he hit just .174 with 1 home run and 0 stolen bases (caught stealing 3 times) over 250 plate appearances — still far short of the offensive production once expected of him. This round of roster cuts was announced alongside manager Kazuki Inoue’s resignation, and covered six players including pitcher Keishi Tsuda. Posters in the thread were split on why Neo’s name was missing — some read it as the club simply going easy on him, others as a sign the team still believes in his potential. The “Active Player Draft” is a system introduced in 2022 that lets teams move players who are getting little first-team playing time to other clubs, and it’s raised here as a possible escape route for a player like Neo who seems to be stuck in limbo. Some posts also raised suspicions about the club’s player-development culture and ties to local boosters, but it’s worth noting these are unverified personal opinions rather than established fact.

On September 30, 2026, as the Central League pennant race entered its final stretch, a 5ch thread packed with Giants fans buzzed with chatter about how the Hanshin game would play out. Meanwhile, news broke that catcher Shiro Nogami (19), who had joined Orix as a 7th-round draft pick, had suddenly passed away, sending shockwaves through the thread. Talk also turned to reports that Masumi Kuwata had suddenly emerged as the frontrunner to become Chunichi’s next manager, along with news of roster cuts from the Giants, DeNA, and Lotte — blending pennant-race tension with wider news from the baseball world.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Shiro Nogami had appeared in 32 farm-team games for Orix this season and had just played in a minor-league game on the 27th, which made the team’s sudden decision to call an emergency press conference with its GM all the more striking. The circumstances of his sudden death had not been disclosed as of this report, and it’s worth noting that the thread was buzzing with speculation even without any confirmed details. Separately, the report naming Masumi Kuwata as the frontrunner for Chunichi’s next managerial post comes from an observational piece by Asagei Plus, not an official team announcement. The Central League pennant race is heading into its final stretch with Hanshin, the Giants, and Yakult all still in contention, and a sense of tension over how head-to-head results could shift the standings ran through much of the thread. Some posts mocking specific teams or individuals also appeared, but comments that couldn’t be factually verified or that amounted to personal attacks have been excluded from this article.

  • Ex-Giants Ace Koji Uehara: Family Photo With Wife and Son Has 5ch Buzzing — ‘So Heartwarming,’ ‘Miporin’s Looking Great’

Koji Uehara, the former Yomiuri Giants ace who later helped the Boston Red Sox win the World Series, had a family moment go public when his son posted a three-shot family photo taken on September 13 — his mother Miho’s birthday — to Instagram. The post, captioned with a message of thanks written in English, made news, and on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board reactions were largely warm (“this photo is so good,” “looks like a close-knit family”). At the same time, plenty of posters couldn’t resist comparing Miho’s current look to her days as a model and race queen, so the thread ended up split between those focused on the family’s warm vibe and those fixated on how the years had changed her.

Ex-model wife shows her face: Koji Uehara’s family photo draws “This photo is so good” and “Hope Miporin stays healthy and full of energy”

A three-shot photo of former Yomiuri Giants and MLB star Koji Uehara with his wife and son has become a talking point.

Son Kazuma posted a family photo the three of them took on September 13, his mother Miho’s birthday, along with playful pictures that show off her personality, to Instagram — adding a message of thanks written in English.

Looking at it, Uehara's wife and the handsome volleyball player actually seemed like the better physical match, while the volleyball player's wife was pretty plain and not exactly a looker. Made me think, yeah, in the end it really comes down to earning power.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Koji Uehara made his name as the ace of the Yomiuri Giants before becoming the Boston Red Sox’s closer and helping the team win the 2013 World Series. This story centers not on the well-known former player himself, but on the fact that a family photo of his wife and son — who have rarely shown their faces publicly — was released. The news article itself was a low-key piece about a family photo taken to celebrate the wife’s birthday on September 13. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over whether the wife’s current appearance matches the impression given by her “former model” title, which led to a stream of posts comparing her to old photos from her race-queen days. Changes in appearance over the years are something that can happen to anyone, but since some posts veered into baseless old rumors and personal digs, those portions have been left out of this article. Comments about Uehara himself skewed fairly positive, with many posters expressing approval of how much he values family.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “[Baseball] Ex-Giants’ Koji Uehara shows off ex-model wife’s face — family three-shot with wife and son released: “So good,” “Hope Miporin stays healthy and full of energy”.”

  • Chunichi’s Next Manager: Masumi Kuwata the Clear Front-Runner — Kazuyoshi Tatsunami, Kazuhiro Kiyohara Floated as Coaches

Kazuyoshi Tatsunami and Kazuhiro Kiyohara are also said to be under consideration for coaching roles. Also drawing attention: even though Chunichi is finishing dead last this season, attendance has hit an all-time high.

If he actually becomes a coach he's going to bring back the iron-fist discipline for real 😢
    32AnonymousSep 30, 2026 21:09
Sounds like GM Araki will make a direct offer to Ibata
Ibata will probably take it too, coming off a 3-year deal as team manager
If he turns it down, Araki might manage the team himself
Tatsunami would need handling on the sponsor/backer side
Shima's still too young and too much of an outsider — too soon for him
    33AnonymousSep 30, 2026 21:09
Isn't Kiyohara's own health the real dealbreaker here?

    37AnonymousSep 30, 2026 21:11
Apparently Chunichi's next manager will be someone with prior managerial experience — could Yano be in the running?

Teruhiro Yano — A-class finish, 4 times in 4 years
Alex Ramirez — A-class finish, 3 times in 5 years
Motonobu Tanishige — B-class finish, 3 years running
Kazuyoshi Tatsunami — Last place, 3 years running
Tsuyoshi Yoda — A-class finish once with Chunichi

    Ochiai's a no-go since he tanked attendance
Right now Chunichi's in last place but still pulling record crowds, so honestly they don't even need to get strong

They cut Ochiai for not drawing crowds, then fire Inoue even though he drew crowds but couldn't win — brutal

    Background and talking points

Masumi Kuwata only just took on a senior management role with the Oisix Shinjo BC ballclub this season, and commenters aware of that fact voiced doubts about how credible this report really is. Kazuhiro Kiyohara, meanwhile, is still in the process of rebuilding his life after his drug-related arrest, and the thread repeatedly raised concerns about his health and coaching methods should he actually join the staff. At the same time, even though Chunichi’s last-place finish this season is all but certain, attendance has hit an all-time high — helped in part by the new terrace seating — fueling recurring talk in the thread about a front-office reality where “you don’t have to win to turn a profit.” Given that financial backdrop, the choice of the next manager may not be driven purely by winning — a nuance that coverage focused solely on the managerial appointment tends to miss.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Urgent] Chunichi Dragons Manager Kazuki Inoue’s Replacement: ‘Masumi Kuwata the Clear Front-Runner,’ ‘Kazuyoshi Tatsunami and Kazuhiro Kiyohara as Coaches’ — It’s Happeningggggg.”

  • Chunichi Dragons Cut Kenta Bright — 5ch: ‘Can’t Even Compare Him to a Guy Who’d Basically Gone Missing’

The Chunichi Dragons’ decision to release infielder Kenta Bright, who joined the team in the 2021 draft, became a hot topic on a 5ch thread. Bright had reportedly barely been seen even in second-team games this season, with fans describing him as having gone “missing,” and the thread buzzed with comparisons to fellow 2021 draftees Kosuke Ukai and Tomoya Masaki, along with debate over whether the front office’s roster decisions were justified. Posts ranged from shock at reports that Bright had stopped communicating with the team despite having received a signing bonus, to comments noting that some players manage to stick around on defense alone even when their hitting struggles.

    🤔

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Release notices are an annual NPB procedure carried out near the end of the season to trim rosters down to the 70-player controlled limit, and it’s not unusual for even high draft picks who never established themselves on the first team to be let go. Kenta Bright was one of the position players the Chunichi Dragons brought in through the 2021 draft, and at the time he was grouped with Kosuke Ukai and Tomoya Masaki as part of a trio dubbed the “Chunichi Big Three” of promising prospects. The thread pointed to the gap in this season’s stats among the three (Ukai .235, Masaki .282, Bright .071) as evidence of how far the results diverged from their draft-day evaluations. Another topic was speculation that self-training routines — including a so-called “bath mat training method” reportedly introduced by manager Kazuyoshi Tatsunami — may have contributed to changes in his batting form; it’s worth noting this is speculation from the thread, not an official explanation from the team or the player himself. Claims like “he doesn’t even show up at the team office” or “he can’t be reached” are likewise secondhand information from the thread and have not been confirmed by primary sources.

  • DeNA cuts 10 players including Kenta Kozono and Shintaro Fujinami — 5ch: ‘That High School BIG3 really fizzled out’

On September 29, 2026, DeNA announced it will not renew contracts for 10 players next season, including pitcher Kenta Kozono (2021 first-round pick), pitcher Shintaro Fujinami, pitcher Chihaya Sasaki, and outfielder Ayato Inoue. Kozono was one of the celebrated “High School BIG3” who joined the team amid huge hype out of Ichi-Wakayama High School, and the news that he was being let go after five years without a single top-team win sparked surprise. The thread turned to the broader struggles of the 2021 draft’s top picks, including classmates Daichi Moriki (Hanshin) and Kyuda Kazama (SoftBank), sparking a debate over the accuracy of pro scouting.

    September 29, 2026, 2:04 PM

DeNA announced on the 29th that it will not renew contracts for the following players next season: outfielder Ayato Inoue (26), pitcher Kenta Kozono (23), pitcher Chihaya Sasaki (32), pitcher Hayato Horioka (28), pitcher Hayate Nakagawa (27), pitcher Shintaro Fujinami (32), development-roster infielder Kenji Nishimaki (27), pitcher Ryunosuke Matsumoto (24), infielder Ao Ogasawara (20), and catcher Taiga Kondo (21).

Inoue joined the team as a sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft. Expected to develop into a power hitter, he showed signs of a breakout last season with 2 home runs, but this season he appeared in only 3 games.

    ① Kenta Kozono — Ichi-Wakayama High
First-round pick, joined the Yokohama DeNA BayStars. Wears number 18.
Got his first top-team win and is fighting to take the next step up.

② Daichi Moriki — Kochi High
First-round pick, joined the Hanshin Tigers.
Struggled with control issues and injuries; now trying his luck in the U.S. (minor leagues, etc.).

③ Kyuda Kazama — Hokuoh Asia University Meio High
First-round pick, joined the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.
After being dropped to the development roster and more, still hoping to break out as a pro.

    Re: #23
Think of it like he went to college — four years on the development roster is fine, but by the year after that he needs to at least show some sign of breaking out. Five years sounds about right, and he's still young enough to switch career paths.

Unrelated, but I think they should've cut Kō Neo loose around this point too.

Sounds like his shoulder's the problem.
An elbow, you can operate on — but once you cut into a shoulder, that's basically it.
Imanaga's case turned out fine because apparently the important parts were clean and it was just a simple surgery to shave down a bone spur, but even Mahara's one-season comeback was rare.

The Seibu Lions' own scouts actually begged the front office to draft Darvish, so the story goes — but they dug so deep into his background (not practicing, smoking, not gelling with teammates) that the team decided "this one can't be fixed here" and passed on him. So you can't just call scouts incompetent. As for Yamamoto, his elbow was already hurting back in high school.

    74AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:03
    Re: #38
    Agreed.
Kozono was well-balanced, but he always felt like a scaled-down, younger version of one of those college first-round pitchers you see every year — I never got that "imagine how good he could be if he breaks out" thrill from him.
Kazama's stuff had more power behind it, and I found him more exciting to watch (nobody outside the team really knows about the conduct stuff anyway).
As for Moriki, those draft pundits who always push high schoolers were hyping him up hard, but even back in his third year of high school I didn't think he was first-round caliber — so when he pitched well on the top team as a rookie, it beat my expectations in a good way. Shame about the injuries though.

Truth is, the Yomiuri Giants are actually the kindest organization when it comes to retired players. There are tons of cases where they find them jobs within the group. Even if it's a low-paying, entry-level job, they at least give them something — they don't just toss them out carelessly.

If you were a first-round pick ("doraichi"), the team will keep you on as a scout or in PR all the way to retirement age.
The Giants' scouting staff is full of former first-rounders.

Background and key points of this discussion

The “release notice” (senryokugai tsūkoku) is an annual system in which each NPB team publicly announces which players it won’t re-sign for the coming season. Being named doesn’t mean immediate retirement — players still have the option of trying out for other teams or signing development-roster deals, and the article itself notes that DeNA is reportedly offering Kozono a shot at a development contract. What split opinion in the thread was how to judge scouts’ “eye for talent.” The fact that all three members of the 2021 draft’s “High School BIG3” (Kozono, Daichi Moriki, and Kyuda Kazama) stalled out fueled skepticism about scouting itself, while others pushed back, citing the story of how Yu Darvish was passed over due to concerns raised by background checks into his conduct, arguing you “can’t just call scouts incompetent across the board.” One thing easy for readers to miss is that this release wasn’t limited to Kozono and Fujinami — it covered 10 players in total, including Ayato Inoue, Chihaya Sasaki, Hayate Nakagawa, and Hayato Horioka — meaning it’s really part of a broader roster overhaul for DeNA.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Baseball] DeNA gives release notice to 10 players including 2021 first-round pick Kenta Kozono, Ayato Inoue, Chihaya Sasaki, Hayate Nakagawa, and Shintaro Fujinami [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Carp Sink to 4th with 17 Games Under .500 as Critics Blast “Pre-Modern Team Management” — 5ch: “Don’t Care Until They Change Owners”

With the Hiroshima Carp languishing in 4th place at 17 games under .500 and attendance sagging, reporting points to the pre-modern management structure centered on the Matsuda ownership family — rather than the players’ “zombie cigarette incident” itself — as the real driver of the team’s decline. On 5ch, criticism of the front office was joined by talk of GM Kiyoaki Suzuki’s future and calls for a sale, but some pushed back with actual attendance figures, arguing it “hasn’t dropped as much as people think” — turning perception versus hard numbers into the main point of contention.

9/29 (Tue) 14:00 — Koko Yakyu Dot Com (high school baseball news site)

With Japanese pro baseball nearing the postseason and the pennant races in both leagues largely settled, one nagging irritant that just won’t go down easy is the Hiroshima Carp’s performance this year.

This season the Carp have struggled far more than preseason expectations suggested, sitting in 4th place at 17 games under .500 as of September 28. Attendance has plunged too, and the “Carp Girls” craze that once swept the nation has all but vanished.

Soccer's Sanfrecce Hiroshima spend money to win titles — a win-at-all-costs front office that still moves rationally while successfully developing young talent.

Baseball's Carp, meanwhile, are weak but won't reinforce the roster — it's just status-quo family management.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Matsuda family has owned the Hiroshima Toyo Carp since the club’s founding and has long held a firm grip on its decision-making. The players’ recent “zombie cigarette incident” was itself an individual act of misconduct, but reporting frames it not as an isolated scandal but as one symptom of a closed-off team culture — pointing, for instance, to the practice of banning media outlets that publish critical coverage. Within the thread, pushback emerged against the general impression that attendance has “dropped,” with posters citing actual September attendance figures to argue it “hasn’t fallen as much as people think,” underscoring the risk of describing reality based on gut feeling alone. The discussion also touched on then-owner Matsuda’s past decision to scrap a domed-stadium plan, tying questions about facility planning amid now-routine extreme heat to broader doubts about the team’s management structure.

  • Togo dazzles against Hiroshima — Tigers’ magic number holds steady at 4

This is a live-thread discussing the September 29, 2026 Giants vs. Hiroshima Carp game at Tokyo Dome. Starter Togo turned in a dominant outing, holding the Carp to just one hit, prompting fans to ask, “When was the last complete-game shutout?” Meanwhile, the Tigers’ own game that day was rained out, leaving their pennant-clinching magic number unchanged at 4, while the Giants’ win narrowed the game gap to 1.5. The thread mixed celebration of Togo’s performance with grumbling about bullpen usage and managerial decisions, plus plenty of trash talk aimed at Tigers fans.

    Background and Talking Points

This thread wasn’t actually posted on the regular baseball live-thread board, but on a Hello! Project (idol) board instead. When the official live-thread boards get overloaded near the end of the pennant race, 5ch threads sometimes get moved to a different board as a makeshift “shelter,” and this appears to be one such case. Also, the “magic number 4” mentioned in the thread is a figure calculated from the combination of wins the Tigers still need and losses other teams accumulate — it can move up or down based on other teams’ results even when the Tigers themselves aren’t playing. That day, the Tigers’ game was rained out, so the magic number itself didn’t change; only the game gap narrowed, because the Giants won. A common misunderstanding is treating “the game gap narrowed” as automatically meaning “the pennant race got closer” — the magic number and the game gap are actually separate metrics.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Giants Acting Manager 156.”
