Why does the baseball world ('yakyuu' written in the mocking spelling trolls use for baseball) have so many petty crimes like this?

So if you're connected to the media, they just don't release your name?

Players, umpires, reporters — turns out everyone's doing it.

Throwing your whole life away for a measly ¥50,000?
What an idiot.

Not even signed balls, just practice balls lol
Can't fathom anyone who'd buy those.

Re: #20
Hardballs are expensive, so people probably buy them just to practice with.

Guess Kyodo News will be banned from next year's camp then. (Kyodo is actually a rival wire service to Jiji — joking that nobody can tell the agencies apart)

Trash media ('masugomi,' a slur blending 'mass media' and 'garbage') never digs deep when it's one of their own.

That's just theft.
What's with this 'we'll deal with it strictly' nonsense.
Hand him over to the police.
30AnonymousNov 5, 2026 19:18
He'll probably just get fired for misconduct, so none of the 4 teams will make a big deal of it.
31AnonymousNov 5, 2026 19:18
I was wondering what the issue was — oh, he didn't just pick them up, he stole them.
32AnonymousNov 5, 2026 19:18
54 balls must've been bulky.
How'd he even carry those home lol

Reminds me of the guy who didn't return a rental penlight from a YOASOBI dome show
and listed it on Mercari(?) with 'oops, forgot to return this~' lol

Re: #1
Baseball ('yakyuu,' again the mocking spelling) is safe — there's already precedent of teammates selling stuff like this.

Re: #35
'Ball-kicking' (a derisive nickname for soccer) doesn't even have anything worth selling, does it.

Apparently when Manaka threw practice balls prepared by the Giants to fans in the stands, he got warned via the equipment manager.
51AnonymousNov 5, 2026 19:33
That's flat-out theft. Make him pay for it both criminally and civilly.
55AnonymousNov 5, 2026 19:36
There's probably a mountain of other offenses. Go dig through all his accounts.
56AnonymousNov 5, 2026 19:36
54 balls, for a mere ¥50,000…
and then the punishment on top.
Just not worth it.

The fact that they can't even ban him is the dark side of Japanese pro baseball.

The soccer world is way worse — write a critical article or one they don't like and you get banned.

Did he think of it like picking up lost balls at a golf course?
79AnonymousNov 5, 2026 19:48
Re: #67
It's nothing like golf balls.
Even ordinary people know you become a thief for keeping anything other than a home run ball — no way a press member wouldn't know that. This guy definitely stole on purpose and turned it into pocket change. A genuinely malicious thief.
And a pretty pathetic petty one at that lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

Practice balls are cheaper per unit than the certified balls used in official games, but they’re still consumable equipment managed under the team’s equipment budget, so taking them without permission and reselling them can amount to theft and could also run afoul of the Secondhand Goods Dealer Act. The 2023 case cited in the thread, involving NPB umpires taking home official balls, is a precedent showing that ballpark staff treating official balls as their own property had already been flagged as a problem — this time it turned out to extend to media members too. In the thread, opinions were split between those who dismissed the damage as “a mere ¥50,000” and those who weighed more heavily the fact that he abused the press credentials that had given him field access, with the disagreement centering on whether the size of the sum or the weight of his position was the real core of the issue. Note that Jiji Press has not disclosed the staffer’s name, and as of this writing it remains unclear whether any disciplinary action has been taken.
