  • Shō Nakata Opens Self-Funded Baseball Facility “Aim for the Top” in Nagoya

Former professional baseball player Shō Nakata (37) has opened a baseball facility called “Aim for the Top,” which he personally produced, in Nagoya’s Minato Ward. Nakata, who played for the Nippon-Ham Fighters, the Yomiuri Giants, and the Chunichi Dragons, reportedly paid “several hundred million yen” out of his own pocket for the facility, where he runs baseball clinics for elementary and middle school students and personally coaches when he has time. “I’d love to see Koshien players and pro baseball players come out of this place,” he said, describing his goal for this new chapter of his life. The thread lit up with questions about where the money came from, surprise at the tuition-based business model, and debate over Japan’s shrinking youth baseball population.

Nakata reportedly spent “several hundred million yen” of his own money on the facility, where he’s producing a baseball clinic aimed at elementary and middle school students.

He’s putting in real effort, personally stepping in to coach whenever he has time. “I’d love to see Koshien players and pro baseball players come out of this place” — he shared his ambition for this new chapter of life.

Just drawing in the hardcore kids isn't going to grow the sport or boost participation numbers. Baseball people are all clueless — they can't tell the difference between popularizing a sport and developing talent.

Aichi's baseball kids are already dominating Koshien. The Chunichi Dragons have won the most titles of any team in the 12-club junior tournament. This year's Koshien champions, Chiben Wakayama, had Yamada — a former Chunichi Jr. player — as captain and cleanup hitter. Kendai Takasaki's sophomore leadoff hitter is also from Aichi, Yokohama's captain is a Chunichi Jr. alum too, and Sendai Ikuei's entire 1-2-3 batting order is from Aichi. It's an era where top schools nationwide are poaching Aichi's kids.

    Re: #86
The guy behind this whole thing probably did round up sponsors, and Nakata's the result.

    Background and Talking Points

Shō Nakata is a former professional baseball player who played for the Nippon-Ham Fighters, the Yomiuri Giants, and the Chunichi Dragons before retiring. The facility runs on monthly tuition, and according to the Chunichi Shimbun article that broke the story, about 160 elementary and middle schoolers currently attend, though it’s “not a business that generates large profits.” Opinions in the thread split over how to read the phrase “several hundred million yen out of his own pocket” — some mistook it for unpaid charity work, while others pointed out it’s actually a normal tuition-charging business, speculating about loans or backers. There was also pushback on the premise that baseball’s youth population is declining, with some noting that the serious “gachi” (hardcore/committed) kids at school-style programs like this one haven’t dropped off at all. Separately, Aichi Prefecture has recently become known for producing captains and star players at Koshien powerhouse schools who came up through the Chunichi Dragons Junior program, and posters in the thread cited several real examples.

If anything, that team's stockpiled so many development-slot players who aren't even pro-level — way more than other teams have

    Background and key points

Rui Okoe entered pro baseball with high expectations as a fast, skilled-hitting outfielder, but while with the Yomiuri Giants he became subject to the “active player draft” and ended up traded. The active player draft is a system NPB introduced fairly recently to help players who aren’t getting enough playing time find a new team; since it’s still new and hasn’t built up much of a track record, fan opinion of players caught up in it tends to split sharply. In this thread, unverified speculation about his “conduct” being the cause sat alongside comments defending him as “in a way, the textbook pro baseball player,” with no consensus reached. It’s also worth noting the original article doesn’t specify what the post actually said, so what this “cryptic post” refers to will have to wait on Okoe’s own explanation. The thread also contained some baseless assumptions about race and nationality, which have been left out of this article.

Reports that Shohei Ohtani will make a surprise return to tomorrow’s game have sparked criticism from fans in the US. Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Under his unusual 2023 contract, Ohtani agreed to defer the vast majority of his $700 million deal to later years — a detail that comes up in the thread when discussing his leverage with the team. This story stems from US media questioning reports that Ohtani would return to game action after just four days off following his injury, with the source article itself relaying criticism that the “snap decision” was “a huge mistake.” Opinions in the thread are split between those who believe scheduled rest should take priority and those who feel his own motivation and past rehab experience deserve respect — neither side clearly outnumbers the other. Comments attributed to manager Dave Roberts were unusually candid about Ohtani’s state of mind, drawing attention as a window into the mood inside the team. Note that specifics about the exact injury and its severity remain unclear and somewhat contradictory within the thread, so readers should treat anything beyond the source article as unconfirmed.

In Central League play on September 6, the Yomiuri Giants beat the Hiroshima Carp 4-0, completing a three-game sweep. Starter Shinnosuke Ogasawara threw a complete-game shutout on just four hits, while Yuta Izumiguchi’s three-run homer — his 7th of the season — proved to be the decisive blow. On 5ch, reactions ranged widely: comparisons of Ogasawara’s pitching tempo now versus his days with the Chunichi Dragons, debate over the gap between NPB and MLB sparked by a pitcher who flopped in the majors throwing a shutout, skepticism about the official attendance figures, and speculation about how the pennant race will play out.

Not that different, really — feels like he's throwing more curveballs. Also, Una (Ogasawara's nickname) has stamina for days, so the right call is to let him keep pitching as long as possible. Pull him early like '666' does and Una gets pissed.

Might actually happen — Giants taking the pennant for real.

Depends on the next series against the Dragons, though.

    Background and talking points

Shinnosuke Ogasawara made his name as a homegrown pitcher for the Chunichi Dragons before joining the Giants this season, and the thread was full of comparisons between his pitching form and tempo before and after the move. A ranking of hit-by-pitch totals was also cited — an annual tally of how many batters each team’s pitching staff has hit, a number baseball fans often bring up as a measure of wildness or command. The Central League pennant race remains a tight scramble even into September, so this three-game series drew extra attention for what it might signal about the Climax Series matchups. Meanwhile, some posts questioned whether the officially announced attendance figures matched what fans felt they saw in the stands, though that has not been verified as of this writing. Note that the original thread also contained discriminatory posts targeting specific regions and ethnicities, which have been excluded from this summary.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Sokuhou+) thread “[Baseball] Central League C 0-4 G [9/6] Giants win third straight — Ogasawara throws 4-hit shutout, Izumiguchi hits 3-run homer (No. 7) — Carp can’t reach third base, swept in three straight.”

  • Senior Men Are Projecting Themselves Onto Shohei Ohtani — 5ch: “Maybe He’s Basically Welfare for Older Men”

A column published in Nikkan Gendai titled “Is Shohei Ohtani the Avatar Senior Men Pin Their Dreams On?” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Geisports Sokuho+ board. The piece argues that senior men project their unfulfilled dreams and lost youth onto Ohtani, watching a kind of “proxy war” play out in front of the TV. Reactions in the thread split between agreement — “Big data already shows it’s mostly older guys who are into Ohtani” — and pushback — “How is this even analysis?” One poster shared a personal story about their father in his 70s, who became obsessed with Dodgers games after losing his mobility, keeping the thread from being pure mockery.

For team sports like soccer or basketball, where equal numbers from both sides mix together on the pitch at the same time, you need to have actually played the sport — or watched a ton of matches — while young, when your brain is still flexible. Otherwise you can't process the situation fast enough to understand what's happening or why a certain play was made.
It's extremely hard to pick that up once you're middle-aged or older.

Japan's current 50-and-up crowd didn't grow up in that environment, so when they watch those sports they simply don't understand what's going on — and as a result, they never get emotionally invested in the players either.

As you get older, you end up spending a huge chunk of your daily life living inside memories and reminiscence.
That's why piling up plenty of real-life experiences and memories while you're young leads to a mentally rich old age.
If you settle for everything filtered through the internet and other media instead, you end up a shallow old man with an empty, hollow retirement.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

While Shohei Ohtani’s fanbase is generally considered broad across both age and gender, the article takes a narrower angle, zeroing in on “senior men” and the idea of self-projection. Several thread posters pointed out that “big data already shows the core audience skews elderly,” and it’s become a widely shared premise in the thread that there’s a generational gap between the audience watching baseball broadcasts on TV and the audience reacting on social media and online. At the same time, the article’s author, Reiko Wakatsuki, has a track record of writing columns for Nikkan Gendai that are critical of older men, and part of the pushback in the thread is aimed less at the article’s actual content and more at a “oh, this writer again” reaction. Even though it looks like an emotional clash, the real point of contention boils down to a single question — how to interpret viewership data skewing older — rather than a simple generational shouting match.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Geisports Sokuho+) thread “Is Shohei Ohtani, on Whom Senior Men Living in a Narrow World Pin Their Dreams, His Own Avatar? The “Proxy War” Playing Out on the Other Side of the TV…“

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Even after the original Touch manga finished its run, TV specials and other sequel footage continued to be made, including an installment that aired on Friday Roadshow. However, since these weren’t handled directly by Mitsuru Adachi but were original storylines created by the anime staff using the existing characters, fans are often split on whether they should count as an official continuation. The storyline involving Minami and Nitta’s relationship that came up in the thread also comes from this sequel anime and doesn’t exist in the manga itself. Similar situations exist with other popular baseball and sports manga — Slam Dunk, for instance, has had unofficial sequels made overseas — so the question of how far to treat sequel footage as “official canon” isn’t unique to Touch. The thread also pointed out that the source article itself isn’t really new information, but rather a rehash summarizing the content of existing sequel footage.

On September 6, the Giants came from behind to beat the Carp in the 11th inning thanks to timely hits from Takuya Kai and Hayato Sakamoto, taking a series win over Hiroshima for the first time in two years and cutting the gap to first-place Hanshin to 3.5 games. The game also marked the first time in the club’s 11,573-game history that it used 10 pitchers in relief, sparking talk about how often the bullpen arms have been working on back-to-back days. On the thread, the debate over the starting shortstop job pitted error totals against UZR for Yuta Izumiguchi, Kaito Muramatsu, and Hideki Nagaoka, with the two metrics telling very different stories. The same day brought a stack of other news too — Masahiro Tanaka’s demotion to the farm, and Seino Transportation’s first Intercity Baseball Tournament title in 12 years.

[Giants] First 10-pitcher bullpen game in the club's 11,573-game history — five relievers pitch on back-to-back days in historic outing, with a third straight day possible as Giants eye a sweep of the Carp at Mazda Stadium
    https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/da5f75525029e3b1fcde6f976cf10c915013283e

On the 6th, the Giants are going for a three-game sweep of the Carp at Mazda Stadium. Relievers Hotta, Morita, Nakagawa, Ei Tanaka, and Martinez are all working their second straight day. It'll depend on how each pitcher is feeling, but with the team chasing first-place Hanshin by just 3.5 games and every game a must-win, sending some of them out for a third day in a row is very much on the table.

    Background and Talking Points

One detail worth flagging is the roster rule buried in the story: once Masahiro Tanaka came off the active roster, he can’t be reactivated until September 16 — a league-wide NPB rule meant to stop teams from shuffling players in and out too freely, and one casual fans often don’t know about. In the shortstop competition, Nagaoka looks like the safest pair of hands going by error count alone, but once you weight in range via UZR, Izumiguchi and Muramatsu both come out ahead — proof, as the thread found, that no single stat settles who’s actually better. Behind the 10-pitcher-relief story is also a contrast in bullpen philosophy: Hiroshima’s new manager, Takahiro Arai, is said to be deliberately holding back on how often he uses his relievers, while the Giants have kept sending the same arms out day after day. The Intercity tournament, meanwhile, is a national championship for corporate/industrial-league teams, and it doubles as a scouting pipeline into the pros — champions Seino Transportation count Taiga Funasako, now pitching for the Giants, among their alumni.

  • Manager Roberts Analyzes Ohtani’s Condition — 5ch: “The Two-Way Duality of Good Shohei and Bad Shohei”

After the game on the 5th (6th Japan time), Dodgers manager Dave Roberts offered his view that Shohei Ohtani’s “personality changes depending on whether he’s feeling good or bad physically.” On 5ch, the comment sparked mixed reactions — some joked about a “Good Ohtani” and “Bad Ohtani” two-way duality, others defended him with “that’s true of anyone,” while others pointed to his past behavior and took a harsher view, saying “his true colors are just showing.”

I don't think my personality changes… am I just special?

    Background and Points of Debate

Manager Roberts’ comment came amid Ohtani’s ongoing return to two-way (pitching and hitting) game action, and appears to mean that his focus and demeanor tend to shift when he’s not feeling well physically. The thread split over whether to read this as “a natural human reaction anyone would have” or as “a backlash against expecting athletes to be saints.” Ohtani’s public image has historically been built on wholesome anecdotes like picking up trash and showing consideration for opposing players, and as a counter-reaction to that, some posts linked this comment to the idea that “the mask has finally slipped.” However, some of these posts were based on unsourced hearsay or references to footage that couldn’t be verified, and it’s worth noting that the original article is simply about Roberts commenting on the degree of Ohtani’s physical recovery. Some also argued that the controversy over his emotional ups and downs says less about Ohtani’s personal character than about the media and public’s tendency to project an overly saintly image onto athletes — a perspective that can’t be gleaned from the original article alone, and is unique to the thread’s discussion.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary from the 5ch (Geisoku+) thread “Manager Roberts: “Shohei’s personality changes when he’s feeling good vs. bad” — analyzing Ohtani’s condition“.

With the Giants playing under an acting-manager setup, the team entered the final game of its series against Hiroshima, and when the starting lineup was announced on September 5, harsh comments like “this reeks of the farm team” poured in. On the other hand, some praised the decision to keep using Takumi Ohshiro, who chose to stay with the team instead of testing free agency, saying it was “good to see him get rewarded.” Opinions were split. News that Orix’s Kohei Higashi underwent right elbow surgery for the third year in a row also became a talking point, and the thread that day was dominated by discussion of team management and roster decisions.

It's not just about education level — it's whether they were team captain in high school, college, or during their playing days as a pro, whether they've had coaching or farm-team manager experience, or whether they jumped straight to manager with no steps in between.

Take Kazuhiko Ushijima, for example: he consistently insisted that if he became a pitching coach, he'd need full authority over pitcher usage and pull timing — with not even the manager allowed to interfere — and he never budged on that condition with anyone. As a result, coaching offers kept falling through one after another. In the end, the only job he ever actually got was manager of the BayStars.

With PND coming off the bench
Of course a lineup like that was gonna win lol
Out of today's starters, only Urata and Ohshiro would even make the bench back then lol

    ◆ Infield/outfield practice positions

    1B: Tima, Riku Masuda
    2B: Urata
    3B: Sakamoto, Ishizuka
    SS: Izumiguchi, Yuasa
    LF: Maru, Matsumoto, Hagio
    CF: Dai Suzuki
    RF: Sasaki, Nakayama

Apparently Darbeck was out for warmups, but then talked with the trainer afterward, and the coaching staff got kind of flustered… or so I hear
Since Tamamura's a lefty, it'll probably be Sakamoto at 3B again with Tima or Riku at 1B
Come on, don't tell me both guys who drove in runs yesterday are sitting this one out
    136AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:12
Even with Ishii out and the bullpen a weak spot, they're still in first place
How come Kinoshita and Kudo just show up and the weakness disappears just like that? Our team is riddled with weaknesses and we're struggling

    Re: #136
If anything it's turned into a strength for them, so to beat them you need to at least be tied heading into the late innings
Score at full throttle from the first inning, and ride the starter as far as he can go
A game like the one against the Swallows the other day is the worst-case scenario

    Background and Key Points

Takumi Ohshiro appears to have chosen to stay with the team even though he was eligible for free agency, and whether the club can develop a long-term starting catcher has repeatedly come up as an ongoing issue for the organization. Kohei Higashi’s right elbow surgery, which became a talking point that day, is his third in as many years, once again highlighting how difficult it is to manage and develop pitchers who keep getting injured. In the thread, harsh assessments of the lineup and in-game management appeared alongside comments pointing out individual players’ strong records against certain opponents — a reminder that the lineup card alone doesn’t tell you whether the strategy behind it is sound. Note that some posts touching on managerial personnel decisions and club alumni could not be verified, so they have not been included in this article.

  • ‘No Talent’ — Giants’ Ishizuka Silences Critics with a Timely Hit Right After Brutal Blast

This roundup gathers reactions from the 5ch thread “Giants Acting Manager 126,” which was live-commentating the road game against Hiroshima on September 5. Early on, attention centered on how long pitcher Daichi Ishii could stretch his scoreless-innings streak, but it finally snapped late in the game. On offense, Yusei Ishizuka — just harshly criticized as having “no sense at all” — answered immediately with a timely hit, silencing the very posters who’d trashed him. On defense, Yuta Izumiguchi’s error stood out, and the thread swung between highs and lows the whole game.

    Background and talking points

The “acting manager” in the thread’s title is the nickname reflecting that the Giants are currently playing under an interim manager rather than a fully appointed one, and it’s carried straight through this ongoing series of live-commentary thread titles. As the roster news at the top of the thread (post 2) shows, this season is seeing a major roster overhaul spanning the draft, free agency, and released players, and the thread’s mood reflects just how closely fans are following the front office moves. “Our team” is standard internet slang Giants fans use for their own club, with no deeper meaning intended. Pitcher Daichi Ishii’s “scoreless streak” refers to the number of consecutive scoreless innings he’s built up appearance after appearance, and it’s a frequent talking point in live threads as a gauge of a reliever’s consistency. The exchange around Ishizuka — getting harshly criticized only to deliver a timely hit moments later — is a classic case of an anonymous-board post getting instantly undercut by results, and is better read as part of the thread’s live energy than as any real verdict on the player. Likewise, the error attributed to Izumiguchi on defense was a one-off moment in a game-deciding situation, and should be viewed separately from any judgment on his season as a whole.
