  • Emoto Takenori: “Teams with Losing Records Shouldn’t Make the Playoffs” — 5ch Divided Over His Baseball Reform Proposals

Pro baseball commentator Takenori Emoto has put forward proposals to Nippon Professional Baseball on Climax Series (CS) playoff eligibility, the merits of the OPS stat, and the number of schools allowed into the Koshien tournament — and 5ch had plenty to say about it. His three claims — “teams with losing records shouldn’t make the CS,” “OPS is unnecessary, batting average/RBIs/home runs are enough,” and “cut the number of Koshien schools” — each split opinion down the middle, with some users calling for scrapping the CS altogether and others arguing Koshien should actually expand. The result was a single article that touched off several arguments running in parallel.

⟨Takenori Emoto’s Proposals for the Baseball World⟩ “Teams with Losing Records Shouldn’t Make the CS,” “OPS Isn’t Needed,” “Cut the Number of Koshien Schools” — What He Really Means

It’s not just the pennant race — sharp-tongued commentator Takenori Emoto doesn’t miss a thing happening around the baseball world! Climax Series rule changes, the summer Koshien tournament, a flood of home runs from Japanese major leaguers… he cuts through all of August’s baseball news. ⟨Part 2 of 2⟩

“The level of baseball is dropping, both in the pros and among high schoolers,” argues Takenori Emoto

    – slugging percentage shouldn't factor into on-base percentage
    – reaching on a dropped third strike shouldn't count toward on-base percentage
    – if the pitcher's just wild and the batters before and after also draw walks/HBPs, that batter's on-base percentage should be voided

…a stat like that would actually mean something. But OPS is just simple addition, so it can go past 100%. A "rate" stat that can exceed 100% doesn't mean anything. An OPS of 1.00 would mean being on base or hitting a homer 100% of the time, lol. Nobody in the history of any category anywhere has ever done that.
    50AnonymousSep 10, 2026 01:30

By that math OPS comes out to 2.50. Since you're adding two separate metrics — OBP and SLG — the resulting number has nothing to do with percentages anymore. A number like 2.50 doesn't mean 250%.

    Re: #80
    Why specifically 10 games?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Climax Series (CS) is NPB’s postseason format, introduced in 2007, and the fact that a 3rd-place team with a losing record — a so-called “debt team” — can still qualify has long been a point of contention. OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) is a sabermetrics-style stat that has spread in recent years, and skepticism like Emoto’s remains deep-rooted in Japanese baseball, which has traditionally emphasized batting average, RBIs, and home runs. In the thread, criticism that “a stat is broken if simple addition can push it past 100%” was met with counterarguments that “it’s a number meant to be read via distribution, not as a percentage,” revealing some disagreement over how OPS is even calculated in the first place. On the question of how many schools should compete at Koshien, opinions split between those wanting to expand the field and those wanting to shrink it, given that some teams already struggle to field enough players amid Japan’s declining birthrate — making it a debate that didn’t reduce to a simple for-or-against split.

  • Two-Way Doubts Grow Around Ohtani: US Media Says ‘His Physical Peak Has Passed’

Following reports that pitcher Shohei Ohtani is dealing with concerns in multiple areas — his left knee, right upper arm, and neck — that are affecting both his pitching and hitting, the US outlet FanSided has raised doubts about whether his two-way career can continue. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been managing the situation with scheduled rest days, but the article takes a harsh view, stating that “his physical peak has passed.” On 5channel threads, opinions were split between optimists citing his track record of defying repeated “limit” theories, and those frustrated that neither his pitching nor hitting is at full strength, calling for him to focus on just one role.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Ohtani won the AL home run title and MVP in the same season back in 2023, putting up top-tier numbers as a two-way player. This season, though, he’s been in and out of action due to a combination of issues with his left knee, right upper arm, and neck. This “limit” theory comes from a single outlet, FanSided — neither the team nor Ohtani himself has said anything about giving up on the two-way role. His contract with the Dodgers was never conditioned on him staying two-way; the salary is guaranteed regardless of his pitching or hitting performance, so a slump doesn’t directly lead to the contract being voided. Where opinions on the thread diverged was over how much to trust his track record of repeatedly overturning “limit” theories in the past, and how the team itself views the burden of continuing both roles while carrying injury risk.

Since the Tigers have 3 more games left to play, does that mean the real gap is effectively 3.5 games?
Their win rate at Koshien apparently isn't great, but with a lot of the remaining games there, maybe there's a shot.

If the Giants had already finished their whole schedule and the Tigers just had 3 games left, sure — but I can't picture the current Tigers winning all 3 of those games in the thick of a pennant race.

    Background and Talking Points

The Hanshin Tigers remain in first place in the Central League, but after dropping this three-game series to the Carp, their lead over the second-place Giants still isn’t widening the way you’d expect. As commenters in the thread pointed out, the Tigers have a commanding record against the Giants head-to-head this season, but they keep dropping games against other opponents — the Carp in particular — which is dragging down their overall results. Opinions were split on manager Kyuji Fujikawa’s approach, with a persistent theory that he’s prioritizing Giants matchups above everything else and treating other series as expendable. It’s also worth noting the Tigers have more games left to play than the Giants, so the raw game-back number alone doesn’t fully capture how tight things really are. And since Fujikawa’s return as manager next season is already locked in regardless of how this year finishes, that’s useful context for reading the thread’s debate over his in-game decisions.

  • Giants Cling to 3-Run Lead Over Chunichi as Late-Inning Bullpen Calls Steal the Spotlight — 5ch: ‘Just Like Tanishige Said’

This is the live-commentary thread for the Giants-Chunichi game at Tokyo Dome on the 9th. While Maru delivered results, Izumiguchi — who keeps getting called out for his low batting average with runners in scoring position — again failed to cash in on his chances. The Giants carried a 3-run lead into the late innings, and thread posters debated how to divide up the remaining bullpen arms, including whether to rest closers like Eight and Raidel for the next day’s game. After the final out, some reacted that commentator Motonobu Tanishige’s on-air read of the situation had come true.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This day’s Giants-Chunichi game at Tokyo Dome saw Maru deliver results early, while Izumiguchi — long criticized for his low batting average with runners in scoring position — continued to struggle in this game as well. With only a limited number of available pitchers in the late innings, the focus turned to whether go-to relievers like Eight and Raidel should be held back for the next day’s game, and opinions were split on whether the 9th inning should be treated as a save situation. After the game, some voices noted that TV commentator Motonobu Tanishige’s on-air prediction had ultimately proven correct. The original thread, titled ‘Acting Giants Manager,’ is the 130th installment of an ongoing series, and debates over pitcher usage have repeatedly come up in these live-commentary threads as the season winds down.

  • Shohei Ohtani Benched Day After Comeback, Restarts ‘Within What He Can Still Play Through’

Shohei Ohtani wrapped up his first game back after a five-game absence on September 8, only to be unexpectedly left out of the starting lineup the very next day, the 9th. According to Sports Hochi, the concern centers on the condition of his left knee and right arm, and he reportedly plans to restart “within a range he can still play in.” On the 5ch Geinou/Sports Express+ thread, the sudden “accident” report drew mixed reactions — some worried about his health, others joking about his repeated absences, and some sharply noting that his bench players, like Edman and the pinch-hitters, have actually been performing better.

If they trade him, it just means the Dodgers got to use him on the cheap

    Background and Talking Points

Ohtani has faced repeated reports of fatigue and injury this season while continuing his two-way workload as both pitcher and hitter, and on the thread, the headline’s very use of the word “accident” became a target of jokes. This time it’s strictly a bench start (being left out of the lineup), which is technically different from being placed on the injured list, though the reporting itself doesn’t make that distinction clear. With the postseason approaching, losing their top slugger would be no small blow for the Dodgers, and the thread’s chatter about bench players like Edman and Teoscar stepping up reflects the team’s current depth situation. Meanwhile, the back half of the thread drifted off-topic into baseball-versus-soccer fan rivalries and speculation about Ohtani’s personal life, and as of the 9th there’s been no further update on his actual physical condition.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “Possible accident for Shohei Ohtani? Shocking benching the day after his return from a five-game absence, determined to restart “within a range he can play in”.”

  • Former Manager Shinnosuke Abe Returns to the Giants, Back on the Field 4 Months After Resigning — 5ch: ‘Didn’t They Start Winning Once He Left?’

The Yomiuri Giants have announced that former manager Shinnosuke Abe will return to the team’s front line roughly four months after resigning. Abe stepped down as manager early in the season, and is now rejoining the club just as it has been picking up form in the late stages under interim skipper Shinji Hashigami. Reaction on 5ch was split: some posters were harsh, arguing “he clearly hasn’t reflected enough,” pointing out that his resignation came with a vow to quit drinking, while others welcomed the move as reinforcement for the Climax Series push, noting the team’s win rate against the Hanshin Tigers had dropped since Abe left.

Shinnosuke Abe took over as Giants manager in 2024 but resigned early this season, with coach Shinji Hashigami taking over the reins ever since. Reports at the time of his resignation said he showed contrition, including a vow to give up alcohol, and the thread’s jokes leaned heavily on that detail. As the quoted article notes, this “return” is believed to be more of an advisory role rather than Abe putting the uniform back on and calling the shots himself — though most of the thread’s reactions treated it simply as a “return to managing” without factoring that in, so the actual scope of his involvement will have to wait for an official announcement from the club. Posters also cited conflicting numbers for the team’s record under Hashigami, especially against the Tigers, so it’s best to check primary sources for the exact figures.

  • Hanshin’s “Oh No, We’re Gonna Win It!” championship special still unscheduled this year — the 2021 broadcast jinxed their pennant run

The Central League-leading Hanshin Tigers open a three-game series against Hiroshima at Koshien Stadium on the 8th, with their magic number for the pennant sitting at 18. When a reporter checked in with Asahi Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) about its now-traditional special “Oh No, Hanshin’s Gonna Win It!,” the network said “nothing has been decided at this point.” The special aired in 2021, the year Hanshin missed out on the pennant, while it was shelved in 2023 and 2025 — both championship years. On 5ch, some posters backed holding off on the broadcast as a lucky charm, while others argued it’s too early to celebrate with only a 2.5-game lead over second place.

The Central League-leading Hanshin Tigers, with their magic number for the pennant now at 18, host Hiroshima for a three-game series starting on the 8th at Koshien Stadium. As the pennant race heats up, baseball fans on social media have their eyes on one thing in particular: whether Asahi Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) will air its special “Oh No, Hanshin’s Gonna Win It!” again.

This year, with our reporter now having moved from Sankei Sports to Sankei Digital, we again called ABC to ask about the special’s broadcast plans. A representative told us, “nothing has been decided at this point.”

Hanshin's got Saiki, Murakami, and Takahashi all lined up as starters, and the lineup's got Chikamoto and Nakano getting on base for Morishita and Sato-teru to drive in — it's practically the ideal roster

    Background and Key Points

The “Oh No, Hanshin’s Gonna Win It!” special has a track record: when ABC aired it in June 2021, Hanshin missed the pennant, and the network then held off airing it in both 2023 and 2025 — years Hanshin went on to win. This year’s “nothing decided yet” response looks less like the network being confident of a title and holding back on purpose, and more like sticking to the jinx-avoidance tradition. A magic number of 18 can swing wildly depending on the leading team’s remaining games and results, and posters on the thread pointed out it’s “not time to celebrate yet.” Indeed, as of the 8th, the lead over second place sits at a slim 2.5 games, and the timing of any pennant clinch will shift depending on how the remaining schedule — including the Hiroshima series — plays out. The thread split between posters who back the superstition and those with a more cynical take that it’s really just about ratings and sponsors rather than any jinx — though neither view can be confirmed from the source article alone.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “[V Yanen!] Asahi Broadcasting’s “Oh No, Hanshin’s Gonna Win It!” special has no broadcast plans again this year — aired in ’21, missed the pennant; held back in ’23 and ’25, won both times [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Shohei Ohtani Goes 64 Plate Appearances Without a Homer — 5ch: ‘He’s Basically Turned Into Hideki Matsui’

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani has gone cold at the plate — now 64 plate appearances without a home run — and the drought became a hot topic on the Nanademo Jikkyo board (5ch’s sports discussion forum). Posters noted his OPS has slipped to .902 and could soon dip below .900, drawing comparisons to Munetaka Murakami (OPS .812) and Kazuma Okamoto (OPS .746), who are having similarly rough stretches. Others pushed back by pointing to his contributions on the basepaths, like stolen bases, while the long-running debate over whether regular-season or postseason stats matter more resurfaced — eventually widening into comparisons with Hideki Matsui.

    60AnonymousSep 8, 2026 18:52
    Re: #53
He means that normally if you hit 30 bombs, your OPS should be way higher than that.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage) reflects a batter’s overall offensive production, and a prolonged home-run drought tends to drag the whole number down through a falling slugging percentage. The two players brought up for comparison in the thread, Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto, have also seen their OPS stagnate relative to their home run totals, so this isn’t unique to Ohtani. The thread also repeatedly referenced the 2024 case in which Ohtani’s then-personal interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was fired by the team over his involvement in illegal gambling — but it was Mizuhara alone who faced criminal charges, and Ohtani himself was never charged with any crime. The point that split the thread was how much weight to give regular-season numbers versus past postseason performance — a recurring argument that comes up whenever a player’s form is being judged, not just in Ohtani’s case.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “Bunshun Cannon” often follows a pattern: the day before publication, it teases the target and content in vague terms on social media, then reveals the name when the full issue drops the next day. This time too, the player’s name remains withheld — the names Genda and Kiyota that circulated in the thread were nothing more than speculation, not confirmed information. Opinion split between those defending the pair with “it’s fine if both are single” and those offering conditional acceptance with “unless it involves infidelity or underage drinking, that’s a different story” — and reactions ran noticeably hotter or cooler depending on whether the player in question was married or single. Some replies also referenced an actual 2023 news report (with a link to a Yahoo News article) about former Lotte player Ikuhiro Kiyota being reported as dating a beer vendor girl — worth noting that this is a separate incident from the current teaser. The beer vendor girl seen in the photo is a private individual whose name has not been disclosed, and within the thread, “just leave them alone” was a notably common sentiment regarding whether the story should even be published.

  • Giants’ 3-Game Win Streak Snapped in Shutout Loss to Dragons, Fall 3 Games Behind League-Leading Tigers

On September 8, 2026, the Yomiuri Giants were shut out 0-3 by the Chunichi Dragons at Tokyo Dome. Starting pitcher Togo Shosei turned in a strong outing, allowing 3 runs over 7 innings, but since those runs scored following an error by Ishizuka, they were officially recorded as unearned. The loss snapped the Giants’ three-game winning streak and widened their gap behind the league-leading Hanshin Tigers to three games. On the forum, questions of “why was it zero earned runs?” sparked a thread explaining the earned-run rule, while fans also buzzed over other highlights of the game, including an inside-the-park grand slam.

    Re: #112
Once the defense has already had 3 chances to record an out in an inning, any further runs allowed aren't charged as earned. For example: with no outs, an infielder boots a routine grounder, letting the batter reach base instead of being retired. If the defense then actually records two outs on the following batters, it's treated as if the defense had gotten 3 outs total (i.e., the inning would have ended without the error). Any runs the offense scores after that point aren't counted as earned runs against the pitcher.

There's still plenty of Carp games left, yo!

    Background and Key Talking Points

Earned runs are calculated under a rule that strips out runs scored in situations where the defense, had it converted the outs it should have gotten, would have already ended the inning. The three runs Togo allowed were tied to an error by Ishizuka — since the inning would have progressed further without the miscue, those runs were ruled unearned even though he still took the loss. Because that stat doesn’t feed into ERA, the mismatch between the pitcher’s win-loss record and his earned-run total left some posters confused, touching off a string of replies explaining the rule. With the defeat, the Giants’ winning streak ended at three games, and they now sit three games behind the league-leading Tigers in the Central League. Coming this late in the season, with the pennant race hanging in the balance, it was a game where the defensive lapse proved especially costly.
