  • Next-Gen Toilets to End the Lines — 5ch: ‘I’d Rather Be Reborn a Man’

News that “next-generation toilets” are being introduced to eliminate long lines for women’s restrooms sparked a reaction on 5ch. Some users defended the stall system by pointing to the complete lack of privacy at men’s urinals, while others floated radical alternatives like removing stall doors altogether — and more than a few admitted, “If I could be reborn, I’d rather be a man.”

Then just line up toilet seats with no partitions like the men's room.
That way you could fit way more of them.

    Re: #7
But even at men's urinals, nobody wants a "toilet neighbor," so people leave a gap between each other.
Factor in that space, and stalls with partitions in the women's room actually take up less room overall.

I'm even good friends with a cat named Nyao-chan (a cutesy "meow-meow" name) — probably why I've gotten so good at the impression.

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s public and commercial restrooms are almost universally sex-segregated, and a persistent complaint — long enough that it has its own shorthand, “joshi toire no gyouretsu” (women’s restroom queues) — is that women’s lines stretch out the door while men’s rooms sit empty. The structural reason, rarely stated outright by regulators or the press, is that many buildings historically allocate roughly equal floor space to men’s and women’s facilities under building codes, even though a stall visit simply takes longer per person than a urinal visit and women have no urinal option at all. This Yomiuri TV segment (a Kansai/Osaka-area broadcaster, hence the dialect that puzzled commenters at posts 5, 56, and 248) frames a “next-gen toilet” fix as a government intervention, though the thread itself never pins down what “next-gen” technically means beyond faster throughput.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t over the fix itself but over fairness: several posters argued men already sacrifice privacy at open urinals, so equalizing conditions (shared rooms, partition-free stalls, standing devices for women) is the more consistent solution than simply adding capacity for women. Others pushed back that this framing shifts blame onto women’s restroom habits (phone use, tissue waste) rather than the underlying design imbalance.

What the thread misses is that this is a decades-old, well-documented infrastructure equity issue in Japan and elsewhere — not a new discovery — and that “next-gen toilet” here likely describes a queue-efficiency or stall-allocation tweak at a single facility, not a nationwide building-code mandate, despite the headline’s implication that “the government” is acting.

  • Okinawan Food Called “Too Salty” — But 5ch Says “Soki Soba Is Surprisingly Good”

It started with a post about a meal from an Okinawa trip that didn’t suit the poster’s taste, and comments pointing out how salty and sour the food was quickly piled on. On the other hand, some praised soki soba, taco rice, and champuru as “surprisingly good,” splitting opinions right down the middle.

The discussion eventually expanded into comparisons with the food culture of other regions like Osaka and Tokyo.

    Re: #129
    That's expired

    Background and Key Points

Okinawa was a fully independent kingdom — the Ryukyu Kingdom — until Japan annexed it in 1879, and it stayed under US military occupation until reversion in 1972, nearly two decades after the mainland. That separate history produced a genuinely distinct cuisine: pork-heavy dishes like rafute and mimiga, Spam (imported via US bases) worked into spam musubi and champuru stir-fries, and soki soba, a wheat-noodle dish with stewed pork ribs that has little in common with soba elsewhere in Japan, which is buckwheat. Champuru itself is an Okinawan word meaning “something mixed,” reflecting the islands’ role as a historic trading hub with China and Southeast Asia rather than a mainland Japanese prefecture with funny food.

The thread’s actual fault line wasn’t “Okinawan food good or bad” in the abstract — it was between specific convenience/hotel items (spam musubi, bento boxes, a “miso soup set meal” described as a trap) versus proper cooked dishes (soki soba, taco rice, champuru), which multiple posters singled out as the good stuff. Nobody was defending the bento; several people who tried the actual restaurant dishes came away won over.

What’s likely to be missed here is that the saltiness complaints aren’t really about “Japanese food” at all — Okinawan cooking developed independently of the refined, dashi-forward flavor profile mainlanders associate with Japanese cuisine, so judging it by that yardstick is comparing two different food traditions. The thread’s detour into mocking Osaka and Tokyo cuisine (“Tonkin”) is standard 5ch regional rivalry noise and has no real bearing on Okinawa’s food itself.

  • Zushi ‘Rammed by a US Soldier’ Case: Japanese Government to Cover Remaining Damages as Victim Still Suffers Lasting Effects

In the case in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture, where a US soldier rammed into four pedestrians, the Japanese government is now expected to cover the roughly 8 million yen gap between the finalized damages of about 16.5 million yen and the condolence payment offered by the US side, before the end of the year. The victim, a 62-year-old woman left with lasting aftereffects, revealed this at a press conference with her attorney. On 5ch, discussion centered on the fact that the US soldier responsible has already returned to the US, how the US-Japan Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) is applied, and comparisons with other countries’ status-of-forces agreements.

It has emerged that the roughly 16.5 million yen in damages finalized in a civil suit will likely be paid in full to the victims of a July 2022 incident in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture, in which a 33-year-old US soldier stationed at the US Navy’s Yokosuka base rammed into four men and women, then in their 20s to 50s, on the street, causing injuries ranging from minor to serious. The 62-year-old victim and her attorney held a press conference in Yokohama on the 20th to disclose this.

◆ The perpetrator has already gone home… the “SACO condolence payment” is being used

According to the victims’ attorneys, the US military side paid the victims a total of roughly 8.4 million yen in condolence money this month under the US-Japan Status of Forces Agreement. How the amount was calculated has not been disclosed. The remaining gap of just over 8 million yen is expected to be paid by the Japanese government before the end of the year.

    138AnonymousAug 22, 2026 20:56
This is a pretty tough issue.
If it's not realistic to make the perpetrator himself pay, then since the victim is Japanese, it's better to have some kind of compensation in place.
The victim probably has ongoing hospital visits and other costs too, so it's better to get compensation sorted quickly.
Realistically, the Japanese government is the only one with the ability to pay.
I get why people think it's messed up, but there have also been cases of American soldiers dying in the line of duty on missions tied to defending Japan.
Is Japan actually billed for that, case by case?
Things don't run on nice words alone.
I get the feeling, but it's fine as long as it's what the victim wants.

    Re: #160
There was an American lawyer running a campaign to make US soldiers who got Japanese women pregnant and then fled back home pay child support.

    Background and Key Points

The mechanism at the center of this story predates this specific case by three decades. After the 1995 rape of a schoolgirl by US servicemen in Okinawa provoked mass protests, the Japan-US Special Action Committee (SACO) established a standing arrangement: if a Japanese civil court awards damages against a US military member and that person cannot or will not pay the full amount, Tokyo makes up the shortfall through an ex gratia “condolence payment,” while Washington separately pays its own smaller condolence sum under the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) itself. That is exactly the two-tier structure here — roughly ¥8.4 million from the US side under SOFA, with the Japanese government expected to cover the remaining ¥8 million of the ¥16.5 million judgment. It is a routine, decades-old backstop, not an improvised bailout.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t “pro-US vs. anti-US” in general — it’s a narrower argument over one poster’s claim (#138) that American service members have died “in the line of duty defending Japan,” offered as a reason Japan owes the alliance some slack. Other posters (#141, #147, #165) push back hard, pointing out that no US personnel have died in combat defending Japan since the base structure exists purely for deterrence and training, with fatalities being accidents, not casualties of war. That rebuttal, not the general SOFA grievance, is where the disagreement actually sharpens.

What the thread never raises is that this payment is civil, not criminal — nothing here indicates the soldier avoided prosecution, only that the compensation gap is being filled. Readers unfamiliar with SOFA history may conflate this routine gap-filling with jurisdictional impunity, which is a separate and more contentious issue this case doesn’t actually involve.

Mopeds basically cost nothing to maintain, right?
    I'd actually recommend a "gen-ni" (a 125–250cc light motorcycle, one class up from a standard 50cc moped).
Gas, taxes, and compulsory insurance are all so cheap it's basically free, and there's no vehicle inspection.
For optional insurance, you can just add a cheap rider onto your parents' car policy.
Works even if you live separately, as long as you're unmarried!

Going home even just ¥1,000 ahead keeps you playing thin and long instead of crashing and burning.

    Background and Key Points

Hanemono (“wing-type”) machines are pachinko’s old guard: mechanical units with a pair of tulip-like wings above the game board that open briefly when hit, giving skilled players a chance to time shots and steer balls into the jackpot pocket. They predate the digital, slot-machine-style “deji” units that now dominate most parlors, which is why one commenter’s “are those still around?” reads as genuine surprise rather than sarcasm — hanemono has become a niche, nostalgia-tinged category as Japan’s pachinko industry has contracted from roughly 30 million players in its 1990s peak to well under half that today. Crucially, pachinko occupies a legal gray zone: parlors can’t pay cash directly for balls won, since that would make it gambling under Japanese law. Instead winners trade balls for prizes inside, then sell those prizes for cash at a separate counter technically outside the parlor’s ownership — the well-known “three-shop scheme” that keeps the hobby classified as an amusement business rather than gambling.

The thread doesn’t actually argue about whether pachinko is harmful; it splits on where personal discipline should kick in — whether ¥500 or ¥1,000 is the sane stopping point versus feeding in ¥10,000 chasing a hit, and whether recovering small wins (like the ¥3,000 cushion suggested in the thread) counts as smart play or self-deception.

What’s likely to surprise outside readers is that ¥10,000 (roughly $65-70) is a mundane, almost routine loss in this hobby, not a dramatic one — and that no one in the thread treats it as needing intervention beyond mockery, reflecting how normalized small-stakes pachinko losses are in Japanese daily life.

  • Shohei Ohtani’s Pitching WAR Stalls, Fueling 5ch Debate Over His Cy Young and MVP Chances

A pitching WAR ranking posted on a 5ch live-discussion board sparked buzz after it showed Shohei Ohtani sitting at 26th (3.0) — trailing not only league-leading Misiorowski (5.5) but also fellow DH-only player Alvarez.

The thread split over whether continuing the two-way career still makes sense, given Ohtani currently falls short of the qualifying threshold in both hitting and pitching, with talk spilling over into his run of consecutive 30-homer seasons alongside players like Schwarber, and the state of his knee.

    Re: #53
PCA (Pete Crow-Armstrong) has played a full season and still has the higher wRC+, so Ohtani's flat-out losing on offense too
PCA's defense — historically great, even though some call it overrated — grades out about even with roughly 80 innings of Ohtani's pitching by the metrics
And on the bases, PCA blows him away completely

    Re: #100
You don't even need to ask that — it's just because he can't

    Background and Key Points

Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is a single sabermetric number meant to fold hitting, pitching, defense, and baserunning into one “value above a replacement-level player” score, but pitcher WAR and hitter WAR are calculated differently, and FanGraphs and Baseball-Reference versions can diverge sharply — a nuance that gets lost when a bare leaderboard screenshot circulates on a live-discussion board. Ohtani is the only player in modern MLB history to be an everyday DH and a rotation starter in the same season; he won AL MVP unanimously in 2023, then NL MVP in 2024 as a hitter-only after a second UCL elbow surgery kept him off the mound that year. His 2025 return to pitching only began in June, after a roughly two-year layoff, with the Dodgers deliberately capping his innings — which is why his raw pitching WAR total looks thin next to full-workload arms like Misiorowski.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t over Ohtani’s numbers themselves but over what two-way play is “for”: one side reads his WAR as proof that splitting time between the mound and the plate mathematically caps his ceiling on both sides, comparing it to Babe Ruth’s era; the other side argues the degree of difficulty is the value, and that docking him for attempting something no other modern player can sustain misreads the stat entirely.

What the thread never raises is that his innings limit this season is a workload-management choice tied to elbow recovery, not a sign of decline, and that Cy Young voting still leans heavily on traditional marks like wins and ERA rather than WAR alone — so a low WAR ranking doesn’t mechanically foreclose award consideration the way posters assume.

    Background and Key Points

News Speed VIP is 5ch’s fastest, most freewheeling board, built for exactly this kind of first-person confession thread that mixes real anxiety with black comedy. “Gomi yashiki” (trash house) is not a throwaway insult in Japan — it’s a recognized social problem serious enough that ward offices and NHK have documented it, tied to isolation, hoarding, and neighbor complaints over smell and fire risk; the million-yen quote he cites is roughly in line with what licensed cleanout companies actually charge for a severe, multi-room case, not an exaggeration. Dating apps like Pairs or Tapple, which this thread implicitly assumes, are marketed in Japan as “konkatsu” (marriage-hunting) tools rather than casual-hookup platforms, which is part of why a woman agreeing to visit and cook after only one outing reads to some posters as a strong signal of serious interest rather than recklessness.

The thread doesn’t split on whether the trash house is a problem — everyone agrees it is — but on whether he should confess and delay the visit, or scramble to hide/finance a fix before she arrives, with a harder edge emerging over whether taking on debt for a woman he’s known briefly is romantic commitment or financial self-sabotage.

What’s missing is any mention of Japan’s actual safety net for this exact situation: municipal governments in many wards run subsidized or city-contracted gomi yashiki cleanup programs for hoarding cases, and free public debt-consolidation consultations (via legal aid or ward welfare offices) exist specifically so people don’t have to “borrow more” from predatory lenders — options no poster raised.

On 5ch, some pointed out that “if it’s your own product, just take a normal photo,” while others said “the real problem isn’t the AI use itself, it’s the lack of love [for the product]” — though plenty of cooler reactions also asked whether all this fuss was really necessary over a mere image.

They did snap a photo of their own product and use that
There's no way some other company's AI could just generate an Ajinomoto product out of nowhere

    Background and Key Points

Ajinomoto’s Hondashi brand is a legacy staple — the granulated dashi (bonito/kelp soup stock) launched in 1970, and it commands a huge share of Japan’s instant-dashi market; Ajinomoto itself has been synonymous with MSG-based seasoning in Japan since 1909. That legacy status is precisely why its official corporate X account carries weight: it’s not a random affiliate marketer but the brand’s flagship channel, so an obviously AI-warped product image with illegible label text reads as institutional carelessness rather than a stray marketing slip. The apology followed swiftly, which is standard corporate-Japan crisis practice — apologize fast to contain a bad-optics story before it compounds, even when the underlying harm is minimal.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t “AI good or bad” — nearly everyone agrees AI-assisted image work is fine in principle. The split is over what the error signals: one camp reads garbled text on your own product’s label as evidence nobody checked the output, i.e., a “lack of love” for the product and customers; the other camp treats it as a non-issue blown up by professionally offended X users, and some even argue the apology itself was a mistake because it rewarded the complainers.

What’s likely to be misunderstood by non-Japanese readers is the practical backstory buried in the replies: several posters note Ajinomoto did start from an actual product photo, and one plausible explanation is the product bottle’s curved, hourglass shape naturally distorts straight-on text — meaning this may be an image-editing/upscaling artifact compounding an already awkward source photo, not a wholesale AI-generated fabrication.

  • Chiben Wakayama Wins It All — 5 Minutes Later, Dortmund Sends Congrats; 5ch: ‘Koshien Went International While We Weren’t Looking’

Moments after Chiben Wakayama beat Kendai Takasaki 4–3 to claim their fourth summer Koshien title — and first in five years — Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund posted a congratulatory message on social media, setting off a buzz in 5ch’s live-thread community.

Why would a soccer club react to a high school baseball final? Theories flew across the thread, from a shared tiger-stripe uniform connection and rumors of past exchanges between the two clubs, to suspicions that the whole thing was staged.

The final of the 108th National High School Baseball Championship was held on August 22, with Chiben Wakayama (Wakayama) edging out Kendai Takasaki (Gunma) 4–3,

claiming their fourth title and first in five years. After the hard-fought game, a congratulatory message arrived for Chiben Wakayama from an unexpected source, catching fans off guard.

The message to the hard-hitting Chiben squad — now tied with PL Gakuen for four summer titles — came from none other than Borussia Dortmund, a powerhouse of Germany’s top soccer division.

    89AnonymousAug 22, 2026 20:01
    Re: #88
Because most people don't even know it's a thing.

    Background and Key Points

Koshien needs little introduction inside Japan but plenty outside it: the National High School Baseball Championship, held at Hanshin Koshien Stadium since 1915, is a two-week, single-elimination tournament that draws roughly 50,000 spectators a game and stops the country the way a World Cup final might elsewhere — this year’s edition was the 108th. Chiben Wakayama’s win gave the school its fourth title, tying it with PL Gakuen, a genuinely significant marker in a competition where most schools never win once. Borussia Dortmund is not a random outsider here: the club’s black-and-yellow “Die Schwarzgelben” branding gets compared by Japanese fans to Puma’s logo and, by extension, to the Hanshin Tigers, and the thread references prior contact between Dortmund and the Tigers organization, plus a visit to Koshien Stadium itself — so the congratulatory post has a real, if thin, institutional thread behind it rather than coming out of nowhere.

What the thread actually disagreed on wasn’t whether the connection was real, but how sincere it was — some read it as an authentic gesture rooted in that tiger-stripe/Hanshin link (or even a staffer’s personal baseball fandom), others assumed it was a low-effort social-media stunt, possibly not even watched live but noticed via Japan’s official “Virtual Koshien” stream, which posters confirmed is accessible from Germany.

What outsiders will likely miss is the sport-rivalry subtext driving half the replies: much of the thread isn’t really about Dortmund at all, but about Japan’s long-running baseball-fan-versus-soccer-fan sniping (焼き豚 vs サカ豚), with Dortmund’s message being used as ammunition in that unrelated domestic argument.

  • Kuroko’s Basketball: The ‘Midorima Is Strongest’ Theory Survives Yet Another 5ch Debate

Over on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, a thread heated up around the idea that Shintaro Midorima from Kuroko’s Basketball might be the de facto strongest player in the series. Posters split over how to counter his 100%-accuracy shot, and over just how well Ryota Kise’s “Perfect Copy” can actually replicate the threat Midorima poses.

Citing in-story specs like his hang time, height, and weight, some argued he’d be “basically breaking the rules” in real life, and the discussion spiraled into a full ranking debate of the Generation of Miracles.

    1AnonymousAug 19, 2026 00:38
Looks like he's clearly the strongest, no argument there
    14AnonymousAug 19, 2026 00:49

    Re: #14
And that's exactly what makes Kise so dangerous
depending on the situation, he can become a second Aomine or a second Midorima
and if he's copying Midorima, holding off on activating Perfect Copy until right before he catches the pass and shoots saves him a ton of stamina

Well, in the sense that one-on-one defense can deal with him, he might not be a huge deal under a one-man-carries-the-team premise
but between two teams built from equally matched players, the team with Midorima on it wins 100% of the time

    Re: #90
Murasakibara's the most realistic one, honestly

    Background and Key Points

Kuroko’s Basketball (Kuroko no Basuke) revolves around the “Generation of Miracles,” five prodigy players who each dominated Teiko Middle School with a different superhuman skill. Midorima Shintaro’s is a three-point shot with a freakishly high arc and effectively 100% accuracy; the thread’s jokes about “hang time” and ceiling height are riffing on the fact that his shot’s arc is drawn so extreme it would need a stadium roof hundreds of meters tall to be physically possible. His other signature trait, obsessively carrying a horoscope-assigned “lucky item,” is a direct parody of Oha Asa, a real long-running morning-TV fortune segment familiar to any Japanese viewer but meaningless without that context. Kise Ryota’s “Perfect Copy” lets him replicate any move he’s seen once, at the cost of physical strain that scales with how far the move is from his natural ability.

The thread wasn’t arguing over whether Midorima is skilled — everyone conceded that — but over whether he’s stoppable in-universe: can a single elite defender (Aomine, Murasakibara, Kagami) shut him down one-on-one, or does beating him require restructuring team strategy (or the rules of basketball itself) around him. A side debate over whether Kise’s copy of Midorima should cost him more stamina than it currently does never resolved either.

What outsiders likely miss is that the “real-life” framing throughout — bombing TV stations to cancel Oha Asa, benching him with an injury — is a genre-standard exaggeration ritual on Japanese boards for overpowered fictional characters, not a serious complaint about the manga’s writing.

  • Giants Rout Carp 5-0: Daiki Nets First Career Win in First Start as Hiroshima Shut Out for Second Straight Game

In the August 22 Giants-Carp game, the Giants cruised to a 5-0 win, extending their winning streak. Starting pitcher Yamato Daiki picked up his first professional win as a starter, backed by a two-run homer from Matsumoto Go and a timely hit from Nakayama. The thread lit up with a mix of questions about the manager’s lineup choices and praise for Daiki’s big day.

Giants win again today, and Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki sure tastes great (o^∀^o) (a cheeky dig — savoring the loser's local specialty)

Giants win again today, and ajari-mochi (a Kyoto rice cake, unrelated to Hiroshima — just riffing on the previous post) tastes great too (o^∀^o)

    After Arai-san [the Carp manager],
    who'd even want that job?
    10AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:21
Does the Giants even have a real starting rotation?
Why bench Otsuka when he's red hot
and run out Sakamoto batting 5th with Kai catching?
    They're overtinkering with everything.

They optioned Takemaru off the roster, so that's the replacement.

    Re: #10
If they'd lost, sure, but they won comfortably without allowing a run — that complaint doesn't hold up.

    Re: #10
Otsuka's been playing nonstop, so it's probably just a rest day. And they won anyway, so who cares.
Tomorrow's starter is Ogasawara, so Otsuka's back in.
    11AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:21
Feels like pitcher Martinez picked up an easy save there.
    12AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:22
Congrats to Daiki on his first career win in his first start!
    13AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:22
Shut out two games in a row? That's just weak.
    Fans should be furious.

    Re: #13
There are bigger things to be angry about than that.
    14AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:23
Martinez, picking up a save with a 5-run lead, is the real winner here.
    15AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:24
SoftBank's cleanup hitters are on a whole different level, though.

It's silly to even compare the two.

    Decision
Winning pitcher: Giants — Daiki (1-0, 0 SV)
Losing pitcher: Hiroshima — Tamamura (1-4, 0 SV)
    Save: Giants — Martinez (3-3, 34 SV)
    18AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:25
Someone said it earlier, but Daiki's got that classic Showa-era handsome-guy look (a retro, old-school leading-man vibe).

    Yamato Daiki:

    Ah, that makes sense —
Takemaru had been off form, so that checks out.

    Re: #1
Sounds like the Carp got chewed out by Fujikawa over a hit-by-pitch, so now they're showing their support by losing to the Giants every single time.
    26AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:30
The Giants don't hit guys and put them on the injury list, though, right?
    37AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:38
    Re: #26
Abe properly respected his elder, Arai,
but Fujikawa didn't, and that's why he earned Arai's disapproval.

    Re: #26
Actually, today Urata already took a pretty scary hit-by-pitch,
though he just barely avoided a serious injury.
    28AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:33
Outside of Tigers games played in a dome, they can actually win properly, so they're still hanging in there.
    31AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:35
Guess the announcement of the 4th one is getting close
they've sent him down and gotten him properly ready.
    33AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:36
Didn't know the Zombies [a mocking nickname for the lifeless-looking team] were still playing baseball
nothing but half-hearted games from them.
    34AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:37
Say what you want, but Kai's actually calling a good game behind the plate.
    35AnonymousAug 22, 2026 17:37
Daiki's surgery set him back time-wise, but he's the same age as a first-year college draftee, so he's still got plenty of runway ahead.
    57AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:24
They're strong at Tokyo Dome, huh.
    59AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:26
    Re: #57
    Actually it's the opposite —
this year they're weak at Tokyo Dome.
They win more at other parks.
The pitching staff is clearly getting hit hard there.
    60AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:28
Guess they don't even do night games on summer-vacation weekends anymore.
    87AnonymousAug 22, 2026 19:35
    Re: #60
Outdoor day games in summer got scrapped starting this year —
reason being it's just too hot.
    95AnonymousAug 22, 2026 19:53
    Re: #60.
They stopped night games at outdoor stadiums in summer because of heatstroke risk. Day games now only happen at domed stadiums (except Seibu's).
Also, for Giants home games, Saturdays still occasionally get a night game, but Sundays are now almost always day games.
    66AnonymousAug 22, 2026 18:39
Good for Matsumoto Go — he's managed to succeed as a Giants player in a way even Matsuda couldn't.

    Re: #66
Seriously, the guys who were against picking up Matsumoto owe him an apology.

The only ones who've openly said they've been Giants fans since childhood are pretty much Matsu-Go, Nakayama, and Ishizuka.
Plenty of Tigers fans on this roster though lol
    86AnonymousAug 22, 2026 19:35
Even after loading the bases, if it's still just a 1-run game, does that still count as a save?
    88AnonymousAug 22, 2026 19:37
    Re: #86
Used to be that 2-outs-bases-loaded counted as a 4-run save situation, but under the current rules it's 5 runs.

    Background and Key Points

For readers unfamiliar with Japanese pro baseball: the Yomiuri Giants and Hiroshima Toyo Carp are two of the Central League’s most storied franchises, and this was a lopsided in-season match rather than a marquee rivalry night. Carp manager Ryoji Arai is a former Carp great now in a rebuilding job with a thin, inconsistent staff — hence one poster’s crack that nobody would want to inherit the position after him. Yamato Daiki is a young right-hander whose path to the rotation was delayed by surgery; because Japanese draft classes are tracked by age cohort rather than pro-service years, he’s still considered on the same developmental clock as a fresh college draftee despite the setback. Erasmo Martinez is the Giants’ closer, and NPB’s save rule (unlike MLB’s) can credit a “save situation” even with a big lead if the tying run is on base, which is why his outing drew mixed reactions rather than blanket praise.

Where the thread actually diverged was over manager Hara’s lineup choices — several posters called benching the hot-hitting Otsuka and batting Sakamoto fifth with Kai catching “overtinkering,” while others pointed out a comfortable shutout win makes second-guessing pointless and that Otsuka’s absence was simply a rest day before the next start.

One thing casual readers might miss: the throwaway note about NPB scrapping outdoor day games in summer isn’t stadium trivia, it’s a league-wide 2026 policy shift driven by heatstroke concerns for players — a genuinely unusual accommodation compared to MLB’s unchanged day-game scheduling.
