  • Hiroshi and the Manufacturer at the Center of the Controversy File a Police Report — 5ch: ‘The Fire Pit Known as Hiroshi’

A dispute has erupted over the design of a fire pit that comedian Hiroshi commissioned, with outdoor gear manufacturer “Warai’s” announcing it would file a police report over what it calls reputational damage. The thread is split over whether the criticism should be directed at Hiroshi himself or at the devoted fans who slandered the company in his defense, and it also sparked legal debate over design rights and the requirements for establishing defamation.

    Wed, Aug 26, 16:25

Outdoor gear manufacturer “Warai’s” updated its X account on the 26th, announcing it would file a police report in connection with its dispute with comedian Hiroshi.

Hiroshi, a pioneer of the “solo camping” boom, posted on X on the 17th of this month that he’d run into trouble: “I commissioned an original fire pit. I presented the specific shape I wanted made. The company I commissioned began production. Partway through making it, the manufacturer said it was going to start selling the same design itself.”

But the one thing Hiroshi did succeed at was turning everything he'd built up into kindling, and using it as fuel to complete a magnificent fire pit that's been blazing away for days now — the fire pit known as Hiroshi. 😭🙏🏻

・"Why did they develop it without permission when there was no contact?"
・"They're saying they improved it and released it, but isn't that basically an admission?"
Phrasing like this falls close to what's classified as "opinion/commentary."
It would likely be treated as "criticism based on the publicly disclosed facts," making it unlikely a disclosure request would be granted.

By contrast, definitive factual assertions like:
    ・"Company X committed a crime"
    ・"Company X is a scam company"
    ・"Company X stole intellectual property"
would make a disclosure request much more likely to succeed.

    Re: #149
Total silence — he's just posting his own videos and sponsor promos like nothing happened.

    Background and Key Points

Hiroshi (real name Hiroshi Shinagawa) built his post-manzai second career as Japan’s most visible face of “solo camping” (ソロキャンプ), turning a one-man tent-and-fire lifestyle into a YouTube and merchandising business; this dispute is significant precisely because his credibility as a gear-endorsing outdoorsman is the asset at stake. 5ch (formerly 2channel) is Japan’s largest anonymous forum, and threads like this one compile reactions to a breaking news story — here, an Yahoo News piece about outdoor brand “Warai’s” announcing on X that it would file a police report (被害届) over reputational damage. Readers should also know Japan’s insult law (侮辱罪) was tightened in 2022, making online pile-ons a real criminal-liability risk, and that “disclosure of sender information” requests (発信者情報開示請求) — used to unmask anonymous posters — succeed far more easily against flat factual accusations (“they committed a crime,” “they stole IP”) than against hedged opinion (“it’s odd they started production without a contract”).

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t Hiroshi-vs-Warai’s — nearly everyone agrees the report targets overzealous fans and posters who slandered the company defending him, not Hiroshi personally. The disagreement is over blame allocation: some posters think going after fans while sparing Hiroshi is legally convenient but morally dodges the real instigator; others insist reputational harm flows from Hiroshi’s original post, so he bears responsibility regardless of who typed the insults.

What outsiders likely miss: no contract or design registration existed between Hiroshi and Warai’s — he reportedly only requested a shape, not a finished design — meaning Japan’s utility-model (実用新案) framework, not patent law, governs whether copying is even actionable, and unregistered ideas generally aren’t protected at all.

  • What Do ‘Easy-to-Walk-All-Over’ People Have in Common? Kindness Backfires, Body Type and Hygiene Also Blamed

A thread on 5ch’s News Express+ board asking what “people who get walked all over” have in common took off. Posters shared stories of nurses and subordinates dumping work on them the moment they showed kindness, claims that being under 160cm makes you an easy target, and debates over the effects of hygiene and weight training. Things also took a dark turn with one ominous claim that “the common trait among murder victims is looking down on other people,” sending the thread in an unexpected direction.

    Q. Are there traits shared by “people who are easy to walk all over”?

    — Even doing the exact same things as everyone else, some people just end up getting talked down to or treated carelessly, right? It’s almost like people decide “I can say anything to this person.” Mr. Tamaru, you’ve run writing workshops for all kinds of people, from elementary schoolers to corporate trainees — from that experience, do you think there’s a common trait among people who somehow always get walked over?

Masatomo Tamaru (hereafter, Tamaru): I see.

You need to be okay with being disliked
Even if it's just an act, showing a more aggressive side makes you harder to walk over

    Background and Key Points

Diamond Online’s “compiled from 5ch” format packages an advice-column interview (with writing coach Masatomo Tamaru) alongside reader reactions from 5ch’s News Express+ board, one of the site’s largest general-discussion forums. The underlying workplace dynamic the thread keeps circling — a senior worker (here, doctors) extending courtesy to subordinates (nurses) only to be buried in extra tasks — reflects Japan’s steep senpai-kohai and hospital hierarchies, where niceness from someone with formal authority can read as an opening rather than a kindness. The “harassment hotline” suggestion in post 193 refers to the pawahara (power-harassment) consultation lines companies have been legally required to provide since amendments to Japan’s labor law took full effect for all employers in April 2022 — a concrete institutional backstop the poster assumed everyone would recognize.

The thread doesn’t actually converge on one explanation. It splits three ways: kindness-as-invitation (posts 3, 217), physical stature (posts 20, 27, 33, 181, with under-160cm/5’3″ flagged as a marker, notably short since average Japanese male height is around 171cm), and sheer attitude or muscle-building, which one poster (204) dismisses outright for white-collar work.

What’s easy to miss is how quickly the thread abandons its own question: after post 108’s genuinely dark advice about dehumanizing aggressors, the conversation dissolves into selfies, an old Sakai Moving Service uniform photo, and a non sequitur about the 10th-century rebel Taira no Masakado — a pattern typical of 5ch threads drifting from substance into in-jokes rather than resolving the original premise.

If they tackled the fact that foreigners can buy so easily first, that would help curb the condo price surge too.

Guess there are still people out there who think it's foreigners doing all the condo flipping
Even though MLIT's own statistics show foreign nationals' real estate purchases are only a few percent
    124AnonymousAug 26, 2026 18:14
    Re: #121
Feels like the foreign buyer ratio would be high for real estate in central Tokyo specifically though
    122AnonymousAug 26, 2026 18:13
You just gotta actually manage the property you bought properly
The only ones who lose out are the scum who just flip it
    128AnonymousAug 26, 2026 18:17
    Re: #122
    That's not quite right either
If you seriously run a central Tokyo condo as a rental, the yield (rent ÷ purchase price) ends up around just 1%, so unless you're investing for capital gains, there's no real appeal
Flipping is a legitimate investment strategy on its own, but the gap from actual housing demand got way too extreme

    Background and Key Points

Interest rates and building-material costs are the pieces of context missing from the thread, so let me make sure the closing commentary supplies them alongside the tax mechanics.

The regulation MLIT is weighing targets short-term capital gains on condominiums — Japan already taxes real estate profits at a steep rate (roughly 39% combined national and local tax) if a property is held under five years, versus about 20% for long-term holds; the reported reform would tighten this further specifically for flips, not for landlords who hold and rent. This distinction matters because Japan’s postwar “land myth” (土地神話), the belief that land values only rise, drove the original bubble economy of the late 1980s, and heavily leveraged short-term resales are a visible echo of that pattern, especially in Tokyo and Osaka, where used 70㎡ condo prices now average roughly ¥120 million and ¥52.6 million.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t for-or-against the crackdown but whether it would lower prices at all. Several posters argued the reform only slows the pace of increases without reversing them, since construction material and labor costs are structurally elevated, not speculative — meaning new-build prices stay put while only resale/flip prices soften.

What outside readers will likely misread is the “foreign buyers are driving this” narrative that surfaces reflexively in these threads. A poster directly cited MLIT’s own data showing foreign nationals account for only a few percent of real estate purchases nationally, undercutting the instinct to blame overseas capital for the affordability crisis. The thread also surfaced, almost as an aside, the more structural culprit: rental yields on central Tokyo condos run around just 1%, meaning the properties make little sense as income-generating rentals and only “work” financially as bets on resale appreciation — which is precisely the behavior the tax reform is trying to discourage.

  • September Nintendo Direct Rumored to Be a ‘Software Publisher’ Edition — 5ch: “Is This Really What Year Two Looks Like?”

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, leaked information claiming that “the September Nintendo Direct will be a software-publisher edition, with zero announcements of major first-party titles” became a hot topic.

Thread regulars traded opinions over how Raiders — supposedly August’s flagship new release — has already faded from conversation, along with speculation about the release timing for the new Zelda title (said to be coming this year) and From Software’s new title The Duskbloods.

    Re: #93
There's no way anyone could understand the inner fantasies of someone who starts a thread full of baseless wishful-thinking delusions.

    Background and Key Points

Nintendo’s “Direct” livestreams have long come in two flavors: a “regular” edition built around first-party exclusives, and a “software-publisher edition” (ソフトメーカー編) that hands the spotlight to third-party partners with little or no news on Nintendo’s own franchises. Post 25’s table shows this alternation going back to 2024, and it matters here because the Switch 2, Nintendo’s new hardware launched in June 2025, is now entering its second year — a period when investors and fans alike watch closely for evidence the first-party pipeline hasn’t dried up. “Raiders” in the thread appears to be Kirby Air Riders, pitched as Switch 2’s August tentpole release; “The Duskbloods” is From Software’s Switch 2-exclusive action title; and the “new Zelda” is the rumored Ocarina of Time remake, both anticipated before year-end.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t whether the leak is true, but what it would mean if it is. One camp reads a software-publisher-only September Direct as proof Nintendo’s own 2026 lineup is thinner than hoped, pointing to Raiders’ fast-fading buzz as a warning sign. The other camp insists the alternating format is routine scheduling, not a red flag, and notes that pattern only looks unusual because posters are comparing a launch-year cadence to a normal one.

What outsiders should know: nothing here is confirmed by Nintendo — it’s an unverified leak, and “software-publisher edition” historically has still included minor Nintendo-published third-party titles, just not flagship first-party reveals.

  • BEYOOOOONDS’ New Song ‘Shoshi Sengan’ Revealed to Be Written by Former Bitter & Sweet Member Asahi Tazaki

It was revealed via JASRAC (Japan’s music rights organization) credits that the composer and lyricist behind BEYOOOOONDS’ new song “Shoshi Sengan” is Asahi Tazaki (nicknamed “Hoshibe”), a former member of Bitter & Sweet — sparking discussion on the Hello! Project board of 5ch.

Beyond dissatisfaction with the song itself, the thread’s discussion expanded to questions like why this direction was chosen for the group’s first release after adding new members, as well as the imbalance in how often Hoshibe gets tapped to write songs and differences in treatment between groups.

    Tsubaki Factory's "Ai = Un + En + On" ("Love = Luck + Bond + Gratitude").

    Background and Key Points

Hello! Project (H!P) is the umbrella agency/franchise behind idol groups like Morning Musume, Juice=Juice, Tsubaki Factory, and BEYOOOOONDS; songwriting and composition credits for these acts are often not announced with fanfare but only surface later through JASRAC, Japan’s music-rights registry, which is why fans treat a JASRAC listing as a “reveal.” Asahi Tazaki, nicknamed “Hoshibe,” is a prolific in-house-adjacent writer who has supplied songs across multiple H!P units; Bitter & Sweet was a now-disbanded H!P group whose catalog, once it went major-label, was almost entirely written by Hoshibe rather than by its own members, despite writing its own material as an indie act. BEYOOOOONDS itself just added three new members in June 2026 (Kojima, Otsubo, Sugiyama), making “Shoshi Sengan” effectively their post-addition reintroduction single.

The thread wasn’t really united in blaming Hoshibe personally — one poster explicitly reframes the issue as not “who wrote it” but why management chose this direction for a lineup-refresh single, and another accuses critics of only disliking the song after learning the composer’s name (bandwagon judgment rather than judging the track on its own merits). Alongside that, there’s a side debate about whether relying so heavily on one writer is sustainable at all, versus giving more chances to alternatives like Risa Kohira or letting AI generate songs instead.

What outsiders may not grasp: this reflects a real structural pattern in H!P, where a small pool of external writers (Tazaki, Kodama Ameko before her fees rose and she moved to M!LK, Hyadain, “Takui”) get shuffled across many otherwise musically distinct groups, so H!P group identities are often less about consistent in-house songwriting than about production packaging.

  • CUTIE STREET Resumes CD Sales on Reservation-Only Basis After Illegal Dumping Found Near Budokan

CD sales were suspended at CUTIE STREET’s Nippon Budokan concerts after a string of illegally dumped CDs was discovered, before sales resumed on the afternoon of the 25th switched entirely to a reservation-only system. On 5ch, criticism piled up against the “multiple-purchase” business model itself, in which fans are pushed to buy many copies of the same CD for the bonus items, while some also questioned Oricon’s chart methodology for continuing to use CD sales as its key metric.

    Sankei Sports, 2026/08/26 14:20

The official X account of idol group CUTIE STREET announced on the 26th that CD sales at their ongoing Tokyo Nippon Budokan concerts (running from the 25th) would resume via reservation sales. In a post that morning, the group had warned: “Yesterday, multiple instances of illegally dumped CDs were confirmed at Nippon Budokan and nearby facilities, so we will be suspending CD sales for the time being. Please absolutely refrain from illegal dumping.”

Just after 1 p.m., a follow-up post on X read: “Starting at 13:30, we will resume the CD sales and lottery event that had been temporarily paused. Please note that from the resumption of sales onward, all CDs will be sold strictly through reservation. Participation-prize postcards and scratch tickets will be handed out at the sales counter.”

    Re: #93
    This isn't a wafer though
What would you even do with it

    Background and Key Points

CUTIE STREET is one of the newer idol groups on the “chika idol” circuit run by KAWAII LAB (an offshoot label associated with the same idol-industrial machinery Yasushi Akimoto, of AKB48 fame, is credited with formalizing). Nippon Budokan is the arena idol groups traditionally treat as a milestone venue, so a multi-night run there is a genuine career marker. The economic model underpinning the CD sales is the “multiple-purchase” scheme: each disc is a vehicle for a bundled extra — a handshake or lottery ticket, a raffle entry, a bonus postcard — rather than the music itself, incentivizing fans to buy dozens of identical copies. Because Oricon’s charts still weight physical CD units heavily, and TV shows report those rankings, groups have a direct commercial reason to keep selling this way even as digital and streaming options exist elsewhere in the industry (posters note KAWAII LAB itself reportedly has no streaming yet).

The thread’s disagreement isn’t over whether dumping CDs is bad — nobody defends the litter — but over where blame belongs: several posters (8, 18) argue the mass-dumping is a predictable symptom of a business model built to make one person buy many copies of the same CD, while others focus on individual fans as the wrongdoers for tossing content the group’s staff worked on.

What the thread never engages with is the regulatory angle: Japan doesn’t currently have a specific law barring this bundling practice, so “someone should crack down on this” (29) is aspirational rather than describing an existing legal remedy. Readers unfamiliar with the format may also assume the dumped CDs are literal trash rather than functionally-unwanted packaging around a paid raffle ticket, which is the point several posters (71, 93) are making with the Bikkuriman-wafer comparison.

  • Short-Sleeper YouTuber Daisuke Hori Vows Legal Action Over Unauthorized Reposts and Slander, Makes Most of His Stream Archive Private

Daisuke Hori, a “short sleeper” YouTuber with 70,000 subscribers, has made the bulk of his stream archive private and announced he’ll respond to unauthorized reposting and slander with legal action if necessary. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board, posters piled on with skepticism about his sleep claims themselves and questions about why he chose this moment to lock down his archive.

Between August 25 and 26, “Daisuke Hori” (70,000 subscribers) updated his YouTube community posts. Posting under the name of the General Incorporated Association Japan Short Sleeper Development Association, which he heads, he reported that he had made most of his livestream archive private, and laid out a policy of responding to unauthorized reposting and slander with measures including legal action.

Public video count drops from 1,680 to 702

In a notice titled “Notice Regarding the Privatization of Livestream Archives” posted on the 25th, he first explained the situation: “We have confirmed instances of unauthorized reposting and copyright infringement involving footage and images from this channel (including membership-exclusive content) on external social media.” He then reported: “In order to prevent further damage and to consider our response going forward, we have made the bulk of the livestream archive from before August 24 private, with the exception of some streams.”

    Re: #85
Because in human evolution the brain evolved so much — developing tool use and so on — that the body just couldn't keep up.

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s “short sleeper” (ショートスリーパー) phenomenon centers on entrepreneurs who claim they trained themselves to function on very little sleep and now sell that method through seminars, books, and YouTube memberships. Daisuke Hori runs his operation under a “general incorporated association” (一般社団法人) — a corporate structure in Japan that anyone can register with minimal capital and no government vetting, unlike a “public-interest incorporated association” (公益社団法人), which does undergo state scrutiny. The official-sounding name gives the enterprise an air of institutional legitimacy that the legal status itself does not confer. Genuine natural short sleepers do exist and are studied by sleep scientists — they carry rare gene variants (e.g., DEC2) and typically sleep four to six hours, not the 30-minute figures associated with Hori’s brand — but mainstream sleep medicine does not support the idea that this trait can be taught to the general public.

The thread doesn’t split much over whether Hori’s claims are true — that’s near-unanimous skepticism — but over what the archive lockdown means and whether pursuing legal action is reasonable. Some read it as a tacit admission he’s been discredited by doctors and is now hiding evidence; others focus on the mechanics, urging him to livestream continuously to prove his claims can’t be faked by clipping.

What’s likely to go unmentioned: this is a paid membership operation (1,990 yen/month per one poster), so the copyright and defamation threats aren’t just reputational — leaked or freely reposted footage undercuts a subscription product built on scarce access to “proof.”

  • Fukui JA Chairman: “Guide Rice Prices to ¥20,535 per 60kg” — Rice Glut Sparks Review of Production Controls

Miyata, chairman of Fukui Prefecture’s JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) group, has called on the national government to buy back government stockpiled rice and reconsider production controls in response to falling provisional rice prices. On 5ch, opinions split between letting market forces decide and using tax money to support farmers, with criticism of JA’s distribution system and even extreme calls to abandon domestic farming altogether in favor of imports.

Koichi Miyata, Chairman of Fukui JA

“The cost benchmark (¥20,535 per 60kg) needs to become the standard. The government needs to implement policies that guide prices toward that level.”

Following a sharp drop in provisional rice prices, Chairman Miyata of the prefectural JA group stressed the need for the government to buy back stockpiled rice and review production controls in order to resolve the rice glut.

The public wants to buy rice cheap.
Farmers want to sell rice high.
So why doesn't the government just subsidize rice farmers with tax money? There's no need to sell rice at high prices.

Our food self-sufficiency rate is already low — if we stop growing rice too, Japan is finished.
Maybe that was the whole point of driving up rice prices last year.

Jacking up the price is pointless if there's nobody left to buy it, you know?
There's plenty of good bread and noodles out there now, so consumers have gotten used to alternatives.
All that price-gouging pushed people who used to eat rice three meals a day down to just one or two.
At this point, unless someone actually gets made an example of, consumers aren't going to look twice at rice again.
    63AnonymousAug 26, 2026 16:20
Why doesn't JA just set up a system to sell the rice it buys directly?
The price goes up while it's being passed from one middleman to another, right?
If I could buy 6kg for ¥2,050, I'd buy it without a second thought.
    110AnonymousAug 26, 2026 16:25
    Re: #63
JA just buys up the big sacks of unmilled rice straight from farmers in bulk and passes them along — that's it.
They don't mill it, they don't weigh and bag it by the kilo, and they won't do individual shipping.
If you told JA to actually do all that, it'd cost just as much in labor and materials.
The only way it'd actually work is if you brought your own sacks, paid for your own transport, drove up to the farm yourself, and bought the unmilled rice directly.
    66AnonymousAug 26, 2026 16:20

    203AnonymousAug 26, 2026 16:36
The Dojima Rice Exchange was Ishin's Yoshimura's pet project, after all.

    Background and Key Points

Fukui’s JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) is not a government body but a nationwide network of farmer cooperatives that has, since the postwar era, effectively controlled rice collection, storage and wholesale distribution — which is why posters instinctively blame JA rather than the government when prices swing. The ¥20,535 figure Chairman Miyata cites is the officially calculated “production cost benchmark” (seisan hi), used as a policy reference point rather than an actual market price. The backdrop is the 2024–2025 “Reiwa rice shock”: a real shortage in summer 2024 sent prices soaring, prompting the agriculture ministry to release emergency stockpile rice; by 2025 a large new harvest plus that released stockpile created the opposite problem — an oversupply pushing provisional prices down, which is what triggered Miyata’s call to buy back stockpile rice and revisit the decades-old production-adjustment (gentan) system that limits planted acreage to keep prices propped up.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t stockpiles versus tariffs — it was whether price stability should come from the market or from taxpayer subsidy, with a smaller but vocal faction arguing Japan should abandon rice self-sufficiency altogether and rely on imports.

What’s easy to miss: Japan already runs steep tariffs (roughly 778%) and a WTO minimum-access import quota on rice, so “just import” isn’t a tariff-free hypothetical — it would require unwinding trade protections that keep domestic paddies economically viable. Also worth noting: several posters (e.g. #151/#171) themselves conflated retail shelf prices with the much lower price the government pays to buy back stockpile rice — a distinction the article’s headline figure depends on but the thread never fully sorted out.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Breaking News+) thread「Fukui JA Chairman: “The government needs to guide prices to ¥20,535 per 60kg” — Review also aims to prevent oversupply and resolve the rice glut」.

  • Nagano Mei’s Drama Won’t Feature Best Friend Imada Mio After All — Ito Kentaro Cast as Her Co-Star Instead

It’s been revealed that Nagano Mei’s close friend Imada Mio will not be co-starring in the DMM TV drama “Himachi no Joou” (a pun blending “hostess” and “queen”), where Nagano serves as both lead actress and, for the first time, producer. Ito Kentaro has been cast as her co-star instead.

On 5channel, users made sarcastic jabs tying the news to Ito’s past traffic accident and Nagano’s reported romance, while others pointed to scheduling issues on Imada’s side.

    8/26/2026

“When I was asked, ‘Why not try being a producer?’, I felt both surprise and a growing excitement for a new challenge — getting to be involved in making the show from a different position than before.”

On August 17th, it was announced that Nagano Mei would star in the DMM TV drama “Himachi no Joou,” streaming this winter, while also taking on producing duties for the first time. She shared these comments about her excitement for the new challenge.

    Background and Key Points

DMM TV is the video-streaming arm of DMM.com, a Japanese e-commerce and media conglomerate whose better-known sister brand, FANZA, distributes adult content — hence the recurring joke telling DMM to “make it FANZA, not DMM.” That confusion matters because posters also mixed up the platform with Netflix mid-thread, showing how blurry Japan’s streaming landscape still is even to its own audience. Nagano Mei and Imada Mio are frequently profiled together as real-life best friends in Japanese entertainment media, which is why a magazine framing their non-collaboration as Imada “turning down” the role reads as loaded rather than neutral to posters. Ito Kentaro’s casting carries baggage too: he was involved in a traffic accident that dented his standing relative to Imada, who has remained a in-demand face for major ad campaigns and network drama.

The thread didn’t split over whether Imada declined — nearly everyone accepted that — but over why: a vocal minority insisted it was pure PR framing or agency-level maneuvering to avoid pairing a clean image with someone still associated with scandal, while others argued it’s simply mundane scheduling, since Imada’s calendar is reportedly packed with terrestrial TV and film work.

What outside readers likely miss is that “Himachi no Joou” is adapted from a webcomic on Shogakukan’s Manga One app — one poster’s skeptical aside about “using the Manga One source material” is the only hint of this in the thread, and no one explains what changes a TV adaptation might make to it.

  • Square Enix Reportedly Mulling Pachinko Versions of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy — 5ch Split on the Idea

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board, a rumor that Square Enix might license out Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy for pachinko and pachislot machines became a hot topic. Some posters argued that the story about Akira Toriyama hating pachinko is just an urban legend, while others pointed to the different treatment Dragon Ball gets under Shueisha’s management, or brought up Yuji Horii’s well-known love of gambling. One comment drew widespread agreement: “Both the DQ and FF generations are hitting the age where games get physically tiring, but pachinko can keep squeezing money out of you well past 70.”

    28AnonymousAug 26, 2026 14:51
As for going 'downmarket' (into pachinko) — these days it's actually rarer to find a Capcom game, which outranks Square Enix titles, that HASN'T been turned into pachinko or pachislot. And there are still people out there who believe the Toriyama story; that mindset is stuck 20 years in the past.
    35AnonymousAug 26, 2026 14:55
    Re: #28
No, plenty of creators say no to gambling tie-ins. And it's not even about whether they personally like or dislike gambling, or have gripes with the pachinko industry — many creators pour their own philosophy and soul into their work, wearing themselves down to create it. It's not like most commercial works are just 'use it for anything as long as it makes money.' That's simply how it is, and it has nothing to do with the era.
    32AnonymousAug 26, 2026 14:53

Skimmed through the thread, and this comment nails it best. It might honestly be the most fitting path for Dragon Quest and FF as they head straight toward becoming a 'dying fandom' (an aging fanbase with no new blood). As someone right in that generation myself, it's kind of sad though…

Whether the machines see more play or less, Square Enix's revenue doesn't change either way. At most they can charge the manufacturer a hefty upfront licensing fee. That's the difference between them and companies like Sega, Capcom, or Konami.

Didn't Fist of the North Star leave Shueisha's management over 20 years ago when it moved to Bunch magazine? City Hunter has also had reprints put out by publishers other than Shueisha, right?

For example, if you look at the rights notice for the game Hokuto ga Gotoku:

    The copyright credit reads "©SEGA ©Buronson・Tetsuo Hara/NSP 1983, License No. GA-217"

So it looks like it's credited to the original creators. Meaning as long as they're not using anime footage, it's probably a matter that sits with the original creators' side, not Shueisha.

    But I could be wrong.

These days, maybe because of how the business model works, it's not unusual anymore for anime to end up in pachinko. Is Square Enix — which keeps outsourcing development — heading toward a similar situation?

    Re: #59
It's not solely pachinko money's fault, but a bunch of factors have combined into a slow-acting poison for the anime industry. If they don't preserve the environment and relationships that let creators make what they truly want to make and pour their souls into it, the industry is finished.

Kind of similar to how mobile-gacha addicts and the flood of 'Narou-style' web-novel isekai have caused their own set of problems, lol.

Fist of the North Star, Evangelion, Gundam, Monster Hunter — those were basically proof an IP had made it to the top tier. Anything bigger than that is really just Dragon Ball, Mario, and Pokémon territory. One Piece and Demon Slayer are strong, but still a notch below Evangelion or Gundam.

    Re: #132
With mobile games you can just tap to pay for gacha while lying in bed. That's clearly more harmful in practice than pachinko.

    Background and Key Points

Pachinko and pachislot machines are Japan’s dominant form of legal gambling — technically “adult gaming parlors” that skirt criminal gambling laws through a three-shop token-exchange system — and the industry has spent decades licensing anime and game characters to draw players, paying publishers large flat licensing fees for the right to use an IP’s music, characters, and catchphrases in the reels. Akira Toriyama, Dragon Quest’s character designer, died in March 2024, which is the backdrop for posts wondering whether a trademark filing means his personal wishes “no longer apply.” Yuji Horii, the series’ actual creator and scenario writer, is separately known for his enthusiasm for games of chance, which posters raise as a counterweight to the Toriyama story.

The thread doesn’t really split over whether Square Enix should do this — most treat it as inevitable given how thoroughly Capcom, a rival publisher, has already pachinko-ified its own catalog. The real fault line is over whether “Toriyama hated pachinko” was ever true, and by extension whether a Dragon Quest machine would validate or debunk that legend. A secondary disagreement is whether Dragon Quest getting licensed would create pressure on Shueisha to do the same with Dragon Ball, which several posters insist won’t happen because Shueisha guards its flagship Shonen Jump properties far more tightly than a video game publisher guards its franchises.

What the thread likely gets wrong going in: pachinko licensing isn’t a revenue share tied to how much players lose. As one reply notes, Square Enix’s payout is essentially a fixed up-front fee from the machine manufacturer — the company’s income doesn’t rise or fall with how addictive the machine turns out to be, unlike companies such as Sega or Konami that also operate in gaming more directly.
