  • New ‘Genso Suikoden’ Mobile Game: 5ch Users Wait Out Maintenance, Ask ‘Can I Still Enjoy It Starting Now?’

A chat thread popped up on Newsspeed VIP as users waited for maintenance to end on the new mobile game ‘Genso Suikoden: Star Leap’.

Regulars fielded questions about app size, gacha rates, and whether it’s still worth starting now.

(っ´ω`c) Do you eat it sandwiched between something?

    Background and Key Points

Genso Suikoden (幻想水滸伝, literally “Illusory Water Margin”) is Konami’s RPG series loosely inspired by the Chinese classic Water Margin and its 108 Stars of Destiny, running from 1995 through several mainline entries before going dormant for over a decade — Konami let the IP lapse to the point that former staff crowdfunded a spiritual successor, Eiyuden Chronicle, instead. Konami revived the brand itself with HD remasters of the first two games in 2024, and “Star Leap” is the follow-up mobile gacha title, which is why longtime fans in the thread are unsure how it relates to the “real” Water Margin story at all.

The thread’s actual disagreement isn’t about the game’s quality but about how “beginner-friendly” it really is. One regular reassures a latecomer that it’s fine to start now since it’s “not a game where you’re competing against other players,” but another poster pushes back, pointing out the game already has an internal ranking system and mechanics like “war” that look built for future competitive events — meaning the friendly framing may only hold until those events go live.

What outside readers are likely to miss is the “online hostess club” line: in Japanese gacha culture that’s a stock insult (comparing an app to a kyabakura) for titles designed to extract repeated spending, and it’s dropped here alongside an unrelated example — the poor user rating of Atelier Ryza’s companion chat app — as a loose comparison rather than evidence about Star Leap’s own monetization. Separately, Japan’s gacha probabilities are legally required to be disclosed, so the suspicion that a “5%” rate must be “rigged” reflects ordinary bad luck rather than fraud.

On 5ch, while some posters welcomed the price cut, many others took the chance to mock the whole idea of paying money for “just a cloth.”

    Re: #172
Stuff tied to Jobs has this rare-item feel somehow — like the limited-edition Mac signed by Steve Wozniak, or the NeXT computers that famously didn't sell at all.

    Background and Key Points

Apple’s polishing cloth first appeared in 2021 as a companion product to the Pro Display XDR’s nano-texture glass option, an etched-glass finish designed to scatter light and cut reflections in bright environments. Because that etching is delicate, Apple sells a matching microfiber cloth alongside it; the previous model ran around ¥3,000, and the new one — cut to ¥1,580 — is tied to nano-texture displays on newer Macs and iPads rather than being a generic accessory. For readers unfamiliar with Japan, several posts lean on local references: お布施 (osefuse) means a donation offered to a Buddhist temple, invoked here to cast Apple purchases as religious tribute; a fukusa is the formal cloth used to wrap ceremonial gifts; and the jab about Tokyo confusing “Makku” for both Mac and McDonald’s plays on a real Kanto/Kansai dialect split, since Osaka shortens McDonald’s to “Makudo” instead.

The thread doesn’t really argue over whether ¥1,580 is objectively expensive — it splits between posters who see the price cut as a reasonable correction and posters who think paying anything for “just a cloth” is inherently absurd, with the joke escalating into comparing Apple fandom to a cult (the vase and Masakado-curse references draw on Japan’s history of spiritual-goods scams and urban legends).

What the thread leaves out is the actual functional reason the cloth exists: nano-texture glass can be permanently scratched or dulled by ordinary cloths, wipes, or clothing, so Apple’s cloth is formulated to be safe for that specific coating — a detail that reframes some of the “just use a wet wipe” jokes as riskier advice than posters realize.

  • Harsh Criticism Over PS5’s Shrinking Lineup of Exclusive Titles

Sony has long championed the “Only On PS5” slogan, but on 5ch, posters are increasingly pointing out how few exclusive titles the console actually has. Only a handful of games were named — Demon’s Souls Remake, Astro Bot, Ghost of Yōtei — and with multiplayer titles increasingly getting PC ports too, many posts questioned what the point of even owning a PS5 is anymore. Partway through, the thread veered into a heated argument over digital game ownership rights.

    Glad I didn’t buy a PS5.

Stop locking titles to specific hardware.

Selling PC versions only of the multiplayer games that need a big player count — doesn’t that basically admit the PS5 as a platform has already lost to gaming PCs?

    That argument again?
Do you seriously think Sony's the only one whose digital versions work differently, and that Nintendo or Steam give you full ownership with playability guaranteed forever?
No matter how many times it's explained, people just can't seem to grasp that digital licensing terms are basically the same everywhere.

    Background and Key Points

Sony’s “Only On PlayStation” pitch dates back to the PS2/PS3 era, when Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ) drove a steady stream of first-party exclusives. SCEJ was folded into Sony Interactive Entertainment during a 2019-era restructuring, and under then-CEO Jim Ryan the studio slate pivoted toward live-service titles — the roughly ¥500 billion ($3.6B) Bungie acquisition (2022) and Concord, a hero shooter that shut down just two weeks after its 2024 launch, are the two projects posters cite as money sunk into that failed strategy. Since 2023, Sony has also begun porting flagship single-player games (God of War, Horizon, Spider-Man) to PC, which is the direct source of the “why even own a PS5” complaint — a console now in its sixth year with a genuinely short list of hardware-exclusive titles.

The thread doesn’t agree on where blame sits. One camp treats the thin lineup as proof PS5 has already lost to gaming PCs, and frames anyone defending the console as an “eapure” hyping hardware they don’t even own. Another camp pushes back that the lineup was mediocre even before the live-service pivot, and that single-player games were deprioritized because they don’t fit Sony’s push to monetize PSN accounts. A side argument over “you don’t really own your digital games” flares up around the Destruction AllStars shutdown notice but never gets resolved.

What the thread misses: digital licensing is not a Sony-specific quirk — Nintendo eShop and Steam licenses carry the same revocable-access terms, a point one poster raises near the end but that goes largely unanswered. It also never addresses that PS5 hardware sales have remained strong industry-wide despite the exclusives drought, so the “Sony already lost” framing is more a statement about content strategy than actual market performance.

  • New ‘Sgt. Frog’ Game Skips PS5 — Fans’ ‘Exclusive’ Hopes Backfire

A new Sgt. Frog (Keroro Gunso) game, “Sgt. Frog ☆ Wacky TV Show — Operation: Get the Prize Money, Sir!”, has been announced, but it turns out the PS5 isn’t among the supported platforms.

On the forum, users who’d hoped it would be a “PS5 exclusive” came in for mockery, and the discussion spun off into debates over the physical release and the Steam version’s performance.

    Re: #98
    Unfortunately…

    Background and Key Points

Keroro Gunso (Sgt. Frog) is a long-running manga/anime about a comically incompetent alien frog platoon trying to invade Earth; it was a massive hit in the 2000s and spawned a string of licensed games on PS2 and DS, including a well-regarded Tales-team RPG spinoff that one poster (37) still fondly recalls. The new title is a minor tie-in, not a flagship release, and it’s launching on Switch and Steam but not PS5 — notable mainly because it underlines how far PS5 has fallen behind Switch in the Japanese market, where physical carts still move well with the elementary/middle-school audience Keroro is aimed at, while PS5 has been steadily de-emphasizing discs ahead of an expected fully digital future.

The thread isn’t really split on facts — everyone agrees the PS5 snub is real and funny — the friction is over blame and meaning. One camp reads it as proof PS5 has been reduced to Xbox-tier irrelevance in Japan; another insists it’s simply not worth making a AAA-caliber console version of a budget anime game, and that Nintendo fans are cope-posting after wanting it themselves. A side skirmish also breaks out over whether physical release even matters if PS5 abandons discs before the game ships next year.

Readers should know this is 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Console Wars)” board, essentially a containment zone for partisan flame wars, so the slurs (“Shou-chan” for Switch fans, playing on “handicapped,” and “Boo-chan”/”Nishi-kun” for Nintendo fans) and gloating are ritualized trash talk, not representative fan sentiment — and a single mid-tier license skipping PS5 says little about Sony’s actual platform strategy.

Modern AC auto mode is pretty smart, honestly.
If you set it to 28°C, once it hits 28°C it basically goes silent
and barely uses any power — isn't that how it works?
Once the room hits 28°C, it'll just idle there for 10 or even 15 hours.

Back in the Showa era (roughly 1926–1989), it'd just blast cold air forever trying to reach 28°C,
overcooling the room and wasting tons of electricity.
If a Showa-era AC saw today's auto mode doing nothing, it'd say "If you're not gonna do anything, get out!"

    Re: #209
Apparently there are cases where leaving it running costs less than switching it on and off constantly. The AC uses the most power right when you first turn it on in the heat

    Background and Key Points

Daikin’s survey covers only the hottest stretch of summer, but the number matters because Japan runs on Tokyo Electric Power’s summer peak-demand warnings and a decade-old “Setsuden” (electricity-saving) culture born from the 2011 Fukushima disaster, when households were urged to set thermostats at 28°C rather than switch AC off entirely. That 28°C figure, which several posters treat as an engineering threshold, is actually a government-recommended “Cool Biz” target, not a technical optimum. Japan’s summer humidity, distinct from the dry heat of much of Europe, is also why direct comparisons to France’s roughly 20% AC penetration rate are misleading on both sides of the thread: it’s not simply an “eco-conscious France vs. wasteful Japan” story, since France’s oceanic/continental climate and historically low summer humidity made AC far less necessary there until recent heatwave summers changed that calculus.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t environmental guilt versus comfort — it’s a genuinely unresolved consumer question: whether leaving an inverter AC running continuously at a set temperature costs less than cycling it on and off, because compressors draw the most power at startup. Posters split between those citing inverter technology’s ability to idle near-silently once target temperature is reached, and those insisting any runtime beyond active cooling is waste.

What the thread never quite spells out is the insulation angle raised only briefly at the end: Japan’s building stock is unusually heterogeneous, with older homes (pre-1980s “Showa” construction) built with minimal insulation, while airtightness and thermal insulation are two distinct, often-conflated metrics only now being standardized under Japan’s newer energy-efficiency building codes — a policy shift far larger than anything the survey itself addresses.

  • Japan Merges ‘Mynaportal App’ Into New ‘Myna App’ — 5ch Asks: ‘Wait, Can I Just Uninstall the Old One?’

On August 25, Japan’s Digital Agency merged the “Mynaportal App” and the “Digital Authentication App” into one, renaming it the “Myna App.” On 5ch, users traded a wide range of opinions on the update’s usability, its development costs, and why integration with driver’s licenses still hasn’t happened.

On the 25th, the Digital Agency updated the “Mynaportal App” and relaunched it as the “Myna App.” By folding the functions of the “Digital Authentication App” into the Mynaportal App, the agency is aiming for a more user-friendly experience.

By merging the Mynaportal App and the Digital Authentication App, the new “Myna App” makes it possible to complete My Number card identity verification entirely within a single app. Along with the merger, the app has been renamed “Myna App,” and its icon and screen design have also been refreshed.

The app is available for both iOS and Android and can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play. Anyone who already has the Mynaportal App installed will get it auto-updated.

Talking iPhone here — you don't delete the old "Mynaportal App" and reinstall; you just overwrite it with "Myna App" from the App Store. After that, the icon switches from Portal to "Myna App."
    15AnonymousAug 25, 2026 16:13
    Re: #13
    That explanation is confusing.

I think what you're trying to say is:
you just install Myna App from the App Store,
    it overwrites the old app,
and the name changes to Myna App too —

    right?

The way it's phrased walks through the timeline backwards, which makes it hard to follow.

Couldn't you also just delete it first and then install? If NOT deleting it is mandatory, you'd need to write something like "Do not delete Myna App."

But what you seem to be saying is more like "you don't need to delete it," right?

So wouldn't it also be fine TO delete it? That's how it reads to me.

I'm writing this without knowing the full picture — just noting what occurred to me reading your post.

Same motion as picking an e-money option — the My Number card just pops up.

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s My Number system is the country’s national ID framework, launched in 2015-16, under which every resident receives a 12-digit number and can opt for a physical My Number card carrying an IC chip. The Digital Agency, created in 2021 to modernize government services, has pushed adoption for years with points-based incentive campaigns, but usage has remained inconsistent — most transactions, online or in-store, still require physically tapping or scanning the card via NFC. Until this update, two separate apps existed: “Mynaportal,” a portal for viewing tax, pension, and benefits data tied to your number, and a “Digital Authentication App” (based on the JPKI public certificate system) used for things like e-Tax filing and bank KYC checks. The August 25 merger folds the latter into the former, rebranded “Myna App,” so identity verification can happen in one place instead of two.

The thread’s real disagreement wasn’t over whether the merger is good, but over what it costs: posters who welcomed the cleaner interface were countered by others assuming inflated development budgets and inevitable data leaks, plus a side debate over whether unifying medical and tax IDs under one number is even wise. A separate thread of confusion emerged simply over the update mechanics — whether the old app needs deleting first.

What outside readers likely miss is that this is purely a front-end consolidation. The physical My Number card and its chip-based authentication remain mandatory; the app doesn’t digitize identity itself, which is also why driver’s license integration — blocked by the National Police Agency’s separate jurisdiction — remains unresolved despite legal groundwork since 2024.

In the latest chapter of One Piece, a scene depicting the apparent final boss expressing regret with the line “I should have wiped out the Pirate Kings back then” became a hot topic on Nandemo Jikkyo (5ch’s “anything goes” livestream-commentary board). The thread buzzed with the usual running joke about “when is this series ever going to end” and speculation on just how long Imu’s flashback arc will drag on.

    Three volumes, easy.

    Background and Key Points

One Piece has run in Weekly Shonen Jump since 1997, making it one of the longest continuously serialized manga in Japan; creator Eiichiro Oda has said for years that an ending is in sight, which is precisely why any hint of endgame lore reliably lights up Japanese boards. The chapter in question involves Imu, a hooded figure introduced in 2020 who sits above the World Government’s “Five Elders” and appears to be the true final antagonist; the line about having failed to “wipe out the Pirate Kings” is notable because it uses the plural, implying more than one person has held the title of Pirate King, a detail with real weight for a story built around the search for the “One Piece” left by the previous Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. The thread comes from Nandemo Jikkyo, a 5ch board built for live, joking commentary on ongoing broadcasts and releases, not careful theorycrafting, so posts skew toward gags over analysis.

Where the thread actually splits is over pacing: some posters treat the coming Imu flashback as confirmation the series is finally building to its climax, while others insist it changes nothing and predict years more of backstory before any resolution, half-joking that it could outlast the Reiwa era itself (Japan’s current imperial era, begun in 2019).

What outside readers might miss is that “when will One Piece end” is a long-running, half-affectionate meme on Japanese boards rather than genuine despair — commenters needling the manga’s length are typically longtime fans, not people about to drop it.

On 5ch, reactions were split: some questioned the wisdom of airing family matters on TV at all, others argued that being overbearing is what invites rebellion in the first place, while still others defended the rebellious phase as a necessary step toward independence.

    Background and Key Points

Miki Fujimoto, known by her idol-era nickname “Mikitty,” rose to fame as one of the most popular members of Morning Musume, Japan’s flagship all-female idol group, in the late 1990s and early 2000s. She is married to Koji Yamamoto, a former professional baseball catcher, and the couple has three sons; the eldest, whose rebellious phase she describes, is reportedly in the ninth grade (chugaku 3-nensei), the final year of Japanese junior high school. In Japan, the “rebellious phase” (hankouki) isn’t just a colloquial complaint — it’s a recognized developmental stage, the “second rebellious phase” (dai-ni-ji hankouki), widely discussed in parenting media and typically expected to run through the junior-high years before tapering off by the start of high school or shortly after. That expected timeline is exactly why “already year 5” struck posters as unusually long.

The thread’s actual fault line wasn’t really about the son’s behavior — almost everyone treated some rebellious phase as normal or even necessary for independence. The split was over cause and blame: one camp read Fujimoto’s “I do everything for him” line as proof of overbearing, smothering parenting that provokes and prolongs teenage pushback; another camp, and arguably the more repeated point, blamed the disclosure itself — that discussing an identifiable teenage son’s private struggles on national television is what’s actually humiliating him and fueling resentment.

What outside readers may not register is a Japanese-specific sensitivity: many celebrities here keep children’s identities and school lives strictly out of media, so parading a real, current, named struggle on air reads as a more serious boundary violation in Japan than the equivalent might elsewhere.

  • Manga About a Supermarket Manager Losing It at a Part-Timer Sparks ‘The Manager’s Actually Right’ Reactions

A manga depicting a supermarket manager flying into a rage at a female part-time employee became a hot topic on a 5ch thread. Questions poured in about how realistic the story actually was — from the ¥98 price tag on kyoho grapes (a premium Japanese grape variety) to whether anyone would really show up to buy pears in the middle of a typhoon. Meanwhile, running counter to what the manga apparently intended, plenty of comments ended up defending the manager as being in the right.

Kyoho grapes are one of Japan’s signature premium fruit varieties — a large, sweet, purple table grape grown mainly in Yamanashi and Nagano — and they are priced accordingly: even on sale, a bunch rarely drops below ¥500, which is why commenters flagged the manga’s ¥98 price tag as implausible rather than dramatic. Japanese supermarkets also routinely run storm-prep sales, since customers do stock up ahead of typhoons, but stocking pears specifically during one struck posters as an odd narrative detail, possibly tied to a flyer promotion gone wrong. The debate also touches on “baito tero” (アルバイトテロ), a well-known Japanese phenomenon where a part-timer’s ill-judged post or stunt goes viral and damages a store’s reputation — a risk managers are trained to avoid, which is part of why commenters felt unilateral pricing decisions by a part-timer, however well-intentioned, were the real problem.

The thread didn’t split over whether the manager overreacted — commenters broadly agreed he didn’t — but over whether the manga’s premise itself holds up: the price, the weather-shopping logic, and the suspiciously convenient timing (a big pear shipment arriving right after) read to posters as engineered rather than observed.

What outside readers may miss is the genre this manga belongs to: Japanese social media is full of short, sympathy-baiting manga posted by amateur or semi-pro artists explicitly designed to provoke arguments and shares, a tactic several posters recognized and called out as marketing rather than storytelling — which is why so few actually defended the part-timer.

  • Shohei Ohtani’s Autographed Limited Card Sells for All-Time Record ¥110 Million (~$686K)

A limited-edition autographed card commemorating Shohei Ohtani’s historic “50 home runs, 50 stolen bases” moment sold at auction for an all-time record of roughly ¥110 million (about $686,000). On 5ch, users buzzed with speculation about the buyer’s identity, comparisons to the record-breaking ¥2.5 billion Pokémon card sale, and jokes tying it back to Ippei Mizuhara’s gambling debts.

At the same time, plenty of commenters admitted they simply couldn’t wrap their heads around paying that much for “a single piece of paper.”

Shohei Ohtani’s Limited Card Sells for Record ¥110 Million — Signed Card Surpasses LeBron and Curry

Dodgers pitcher/DH Shohei Ohtani has set another record. A signed card commemorating his historic first-ever “50 home runs and 50 stolen bases” achievement — part of the limited-run, made-to-order “Topps NOW” series — has sold for an all-time record price of $686,250 (roughly ¥110 million).

“Topps NOW” is a special card series released for a limited time whenever a real game produces a historic moment, with sales windows typically running 24 to 48 hours.

There's no way a mere card is actually worth that much.

    Re: #52
That case is an outlier among outliers.
The card itself is extremely rare, sure, but on top of that the owner is a famous influencer in the West who hyped it on his own stream, and his followers ended up bidding against each other — the price just got pumped up as far as it could go.

    Re: #75
Not within the "Topps NOW" series, anyway.

    Background and Key Points

Ohtani’s card belongs to Topps NOW, a “print-to-order” format that started in 2017: instead of a fixed print run, Topps releases a new card within 24–48 hours of a real, specific game event and only prints however many copies are ordered in that short window, then closes it forever. That scarcity mechanic — plus this card marking the first unassisted “50-50” (50 home runs, 50 stolen bases) season in MLB history — is why a single signed card cleared $686,250 (~¥110 million), reportedly a record for the series and enough to top signed cards of NBA stars LeBron James and Steph Curry. It’s worth noting Ohtani also holds the separate all-time public-auction record for a baseball card at ¥410 million, for a rookie card sold earlier in 2026 — so this ¥110 million figure is specifically the Topps NOW/signed-card record, not his overall high-water mark.

The thread’s actual fault line wasn’t really about Ohtani — it was about whether any trading card can rationally be worth that much money at all. One camp treated the price as pure financialization: cards, like the ¥2.5 billion Pokémon sale posters kept invoking, are speculative assets whose value depends entirely on continued hype rather than the object itself. The other camp just found the number viscerally absurd — “a piece of paper” — without engaging the investment logic.

What the thread missed is the mechanism behind that Pokémon comparison it kept citing: that sale wasn’t organic scarcity but a Western influencer publicizing his own purchase and livestreaming it, which pulled his fanbase into a bidding war against itself. No poster connected the dots on whether Ohtani’s sale had a similar promotional engine behind it, or was closer to genuine collector demand.
