  • Female civil servant: “I won’t consider marriage or kids unless new grads start at ¥500,000 a month”

We look at a thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board sparked by a post from someone claiming to be a 28-year-old female civil servant, who wrote: “I won’t feel like getting married or having kids unless new graduates start at a ¥500,000 monthly salary.” In the thread, posters worked out that a local civil servant’s pay structure (base salary plus semi-annual bonuses) does add up to roughly ¥500,000 a month on paper — but actual take-home pay comes to only around ¥290,000, making the gap between gross and net pay the main point of debate. The discussion also touched on work-style questions like whether civil service jobs are stable and easy or actually grueling, and why people stay in public-sector jobs when private-sector pay is higher.

So here's the annual pay for a civil servant currently taking home ¥290,000 a month:
    Monthly salary ¥380,000 × (12 + 4.5 bonus months) = ¥6.27 million
Averaged out monthly, that's just over ¥500,000.
    115AnonymousAug 29, 2026 15:39
    Re: #2
The point is that even though it's ¥500,000 gross, it shrinks to ¥290,000 take-home, and on top of that prices are high and there's no real safety net for daily life.

    Re: #83
It makes sense both financially and for raising kids.

Background and key points of this discussion

A local civil servant’s salary consists of a monthly base pay plus two annual lump-sum bonuses paid at the end of each half-year, and the “¥500,000 a month” figure raised in the thread comes from dividing that bonus-inclusive annual income by 12. That’s different from the amount actually deposited each month — posters pointed out that once taxes and social insurance are deducted, take-home pay comes to roughly ¥290,000. Annual income also varies depending on whether a regional cost-of-living allowance applies, so the claim of “over ¥7 million by age 40” doesn’t hold for every local government employer. The thread was split over whether civil service work is “stable and easy” or actually grueling due to understaffing, and opinions also diverged over the burden placed on colleagues by staff taking maternity or childcare leave. More than the pay level itself, it’s the gap between gross and take-home pay, and differing understandings of what the job actually involves, that kept the discussion talking past itself.

  • Takefusa Kubo Benched for First Time This Season — Local Paper: “Couldn’t Get Into the Flow of the Game, Did Almost Nothing”

Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo had started in each of the club’s first two matches of the season, but was rotated to the bench for the first time this season amid a congested fixture schedule. In the 2-1 win over Espanyol on the 29th, he came on only as a substitute, and a local newspaper delivered a harsh verdict: “He couldn’t get into the flow of the match and did almost nothing.” On 5ch, the thread saw opinion split sharply — pointed criticism of his playing style and calls for a transfer sat alongside more level-headed analysis citing his Champions League playing-time stats, plus comments that acknowledged his talent while flagging his injury risk.

Real Sociedad’s local newspaper gave this assessment of Japan international midfielder Takefusa Kubo (25), who came on as a substitute against Espanyol: “He couldn’t get into the flow of the match and did almost nothing.”

Real Sociedad faced Espanyol at home on the 29th in La Liga Matchday 3. Kubo, who had started in both of the club’s opening two matches, was benched for the first time this season as part of squad rotation amid a congested schedule.

But Kubo… there's nothing. He has no signature moment at all. (´;ω;`)
    108AnonymousAug 31, 2026 23:44
No question he's one of the most gifted players Japan has ever produced in terms of pure soccer sense. It's just that his playing style makes him injury-prone. He might still click mid-season and start pulling off big plays one after another, but then someone clips his leg again, he gets hurt, and it all resets…
    121AnonymousSep 1, 2026 00:29
    Re: #108
His soccer sense isn't actually that great — if anything it's a bit lacking. His ball control and dribbling sense are genuinely excellent, sure. But Kubo can't make runs to receive the ball in space at all, so his range as a player is limited.

    Background and Key Talking Points

Takefusa Kubo failed to land a big-money move in this summer’s transfer window and ended up staying at Real Sociedad. The club has pointed to squad rotation amid a congested schedule as the reason for benching him, but the thread was split between those who read his drop from the starting lineup — after starting the season’s first two matches — as a sign he’s fallen outside the club’s plans, and those who see it as routine workload management. The Champions League playing-time comparisons that came up (the gaps with Kim Min-jae and Lee Kang-in) reflect not just his recent form, but also his broader standing within his club. It’s worth noting that drawing firm conclusions about a transfer or being frozen out of the squad from a single benching may be premature.

After reading a local newspaper’s reader-submission column featuring a woman in her 60s who raised her children without ever buying them video games, users on 5ch’s Nanidemo Jikkyo G board debated whether banning games was really the right call. Some shared cautionary tales — “banning games backfires in the long run,” or “the backlash from being banned made me get hooked on pachinko slots and mobile gacha games as an adult” — while others countered with success stories, like a friend who played games constantly yet still got into Osaka University’s medical school. The discussion never settled into a single conclusion about the link between gaming and kids’ futures, and opinions also split over whether this is really an educational-philosophy issue or simply a matter of household budgets, given how expensive game consoles have become.

Then started studying seriously for exams once the new year began, scored 96% on the Center Test, and got into Osaka University's medical school
That's when I learned that hard work only gets you so far — genetics and talent are what's on top of it

So you're saying he only studied for exams for like 2-3 weeks?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The discussion was sparked by a reader submission in a local newspaper’s letters column, in which a children’s center instructor described raising her kids without ever buying them video games — a story that caught the attention of users on 5ch’s Nanidemo Jikkyo G board. It’s worth noting that the claim “banning games leads to addiction” is based mainly on anecdotal accounts shared on social media, not on any academic evidence. It’s also true that game console prices have been climbing year after year, and in recent years more households are holding off on buying consoles for financial reasons rather than as a matter of parenting philosophy. Within the thread, opinions split between those who argue that banning games leads to a bad outcome later in life and those who argue it’s really a money issue rather than a deliberate educational choice, with no clear consensus reached.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nanidemo Jikkyo G) thread “[Sad News] Parent: “We won’t buy our kid video games. Books are enough.” → Here’s what happened“.

  • ‘Mekura,’ ‘Tsunbo’… Are They Slurs? 5ch Debates Japan’s Vanishing Disability Terms

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board (aka “nanG”) sparked a wave of responses after it brought up words like “tsunbo” (deaf), “oshi” (mute), and “mekura” (blind) — terms once used for disabilities that have largely fallen out of use today. Similar terms came up too, like “gicchо” for left-handedness and “hage” for baldness. Opinions in the thread split between those who see these word swaps as necessary consideration for eliminating discrimination, and those who argue that changing the word means nothing if the underlying concept doesn’t disappear. The thread also noted how everyday language and technical jargon are treated differently — for instance, the spider once called “mekura-gumo” was renamed “zatōmushi” (harvestman), while the construction term “mekura cap” (blind/blank cap) is still in common use today.

In the Hajime no Ippo manga, Coach Kamogawa calls the main character "kozō," but does the anime just call him "Ippo" instead?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Words like “mekura” (blind), “tsunbo” (deaf), and “oshi” (mute) were once simply terms for visual, hearing, and speech disabilities, but from the 1970s–80s onward, self-imposed broadcast-industry restrictions and advocacy by disability groups led to their use being avoided in public settings. Opinions in the thread split over whether to see these word swaps as “natural consideration toward eliminating discrimination,” or as “meaningless word-changing that doesn’t erase the underlying concept.” On top of that, things like the biological name change from “mekura-gumo” to “zatōmushi,” or technical terms in construction and machinery like “mekura cap” and “baka-ana” (dummy hole), don’t refer to people, so they remain in use even now — and the fact that everyday language and technical jargon change at different paces is easy to misunderstand. This very distinction is behind the thread’s recurring question of “why does this one still survive?”

  • Hakata Daikichi: “TikTok Is Just People Complaining About Politics” — 5ch Reacts

Talent Hakata Daikichi, on the September 29 broadcast of TV Tokyo’s “Nikenme Dou Suru? ~Tsumami no Hanashi~” (roughly, “Where to Next? ~Bar Snack Talk~”), said that the videos showing up on his TikTok feed are “just people complaining about politics” and that it’s not fun at all. Reacting to this, 5ch commenters noted en masse that the genre of videos TikTok shows varies wildly from person to person—some said they get nothing but adult content, sports, or pet videos, while others said theirs is all political criticism or videos hyping up specific politicians. Opinions were split on whether the difference comes down to the algorithm or each person’s own viewing habits.

Hakata Daikichi—Even TikTok users say “Not fun at all!” → The videos that show up are “just people complaining about politics”

TV Tokyo’s “Nikenme Dou Suru? ~Tsumami no Hanashi~”, hosted by talents Hakata Daikichi and Masahiro Matsuoka, aired on the 29th.

Kano Takahashi, an influencer known for appearing on the dating reality show “Today, I Fell in Love.”, made a guest appearance. When Takahashi asked, “Do you check social media—TikTok and stuff?” Daikichi replied, “Oh, all the time!”

    127AnonymousAug 30, 2026 17:01
    Re: #125
Isn't the point that the algorithm itself is garbage?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

TikTok’s “For You” feed works by optimizing what’s shown to each user based on their viewing history and watch time, so even on the same app the videos that appear can vary hugely from person to person. In the thread, some said they get nothing but videos criticizing politics, while others said theirs is mostly sports and pet content—likely a case of each person’s own viewing habits being reflected back by the algorithm. That said, it’s true that around election periods in particular there have been stretches where short-form videos favorably spotlighting specific politicians became conspicuous on social media, and it’s repeatedly been pointed out that such content tends to spread widely even when its accuracy is hard to verify. The thread saw both takes—“it’s the algorithm’s fault” and “it’s down to the individual’s own viewing habits”—with no consensus reached.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This rating listing is another example of a pattern seen often in recent years: a new title surfacing through an overseas ratings board before any official announcement. “Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven” released in 2024, and as of this thread it hadn’t been officially confirmed whether this “3” remake comes from the same development team. Opinions in the thread split mainly three ways: (1) optimism that it’ll be good if it’s the same team behind “2,” (2) concern since the original “3” is generally regarded as weaker than “2,” and (3) hope that it won’t carry over the anime-style character designs common in recent remakes. Worth noting: a rating listing only confirms the game cleared a review process — the release date and any official announcement for Japan remain unconfirmed at this point.

’24-Hour TV’: Tsunku♂’s ‘legendary’ speech draws reaction — “I watched the drama sobbing,” “It was such a huge shock”

On the night of the 29th, Nippon TV’s ’24-Hour TV 49′ aired the special drama ‘There Is Happiness,’ depicting music producer Tsunku♂ and his family.

Tsunku♂ (played by Takahashi Mitsuomi), who lost his voice, is devotedly supported by his wife Kanako (played by Kitagawa Keiko), and the drama closes with a recreation of his ‘legendary’ speech at the Kindai University entrance ceremony.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Tsunku♂ lost his voice after hypopharyngeal cancer surgery in 2014, and his 2016 speech at the Kindai University entrance ceremony — built around the theme ‘life is a second-chance match’ — became widely talked about at the time. The 24-Hour TV special drama ‘There Is Happiness’ is based on this true story, and on the thread, reactions focused heavily on the details of his illness and on the performances of Takahashi Mitsuomi as Tsunku♂ and Kitagawa Keiko as his wife. At the same time, many pointed out the jarring change in pace when a variety-style singing contest segment began right after the emotional scenes. Note that unverified speculation about the cause of his illness and his past activities sometimes circulates online, but since none of it is fact confirmed by Tsunku♂ himself or the program, such posts have been excluded from this article.

  • Sugary drinks linked to higher stomach cancer risk — 5ch: “This is literally the devil’s drink”

A U.S. study drawing on data from more than 110,000 people has found that people who drink sugary beverages every day face a higher risk of developing stomach cancer. On 5ch’s Science News+ board, this sparked debate — some pointed out that people who drink sugary drinks daily probably just have messier diets overall, while others argued over whether artificial sweeteners are really any safer and whether fructose is truly bad for you.

Sugary drinks linked to rising stomach cancer risk: U.S. research team studies over 110,000 people

New research warns that people who drink sugary beverages every day face a higher risk of developing stomach cancer.

At the same time, the study suggests artificial sweeteners may lower that risk.

Background and key points of debate

The leading cause of stomach cancer is H. pylori infection, which is why infection rates — and stomach cancer rates — are notably high in Japan and elsewhere in Asia, whereas the U.S., where infection rates are naturally low, sees relatively few cases of the disease to begin with. This study shows a correlation between sugary drink consumption and cancer incidence using a large dataset of over 110,000 people, and it also touches on comparisons with artificial sweeteners — but as with any such study, it’s worth noting this is observational research, not proof that the drinks directly cause cancer.

In the thread, opinions split between those flagging a likely confounding factor — that people who regularly drink sugary beverages may simply have worse diets overall — and those debating whether swapping sugar for artificial sweeteners actually makes things safer. That second point isn’t so simple: some artificial sweeteners, like aspartame, have been classified by the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer as “possibly carcinogenic,” raising separate concerns of their own, so swapping one for the other isn’t necessarily a free pass.

Also, the comment claiming “Americans barely have H. pylori carriers, so there are almost no stomach cancer patients” is really describing a relatively low number, not zero cases. And it’s worth keeping in mind — something the thread doesn’t really get into — that an elevated risk is a population-level statistical trend, not a guarantee that any individual who drinks these beverages will develop cancer.

    4AnonymousAug 27, 2026 21:44
Most stomach cancer is caused by H. pylori, but I guess sugary drinks are one of the other causes.
They're also linked to diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, high blood pressure, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and chronic kidney disease.
    Truly the devil's drink.
    Do not drink this stuff.
    5AnonymousAug 27, 2026 21:51
This only means something if you compare people whose diets are otherwise identical, with the sole difference being whether they drink fructose drinks.

There's basically nobody who skips fructose drinks but still eats like it's a junk food festival otherwise.

Same as how there's basically nobody who drinks fructose drinks but otherwise eats a totally healthy diet.

You shouldn't put it that way. What this actually says is that, statistically, artificial sweeteners might lower cancer risk compared to sugary drinks — as for other health effects, who knows.

Dissolving sugar into a drink and drinking it apparently makes you more likely to die early.

    are basically junk food lovers.

Guzzle garbage oils → your cells' fat turns to garbage
Guzzle additives → cell damage piles up
Guzzle antibacterial ingredients → your gut bacteria get wiped out

    The brain gets fooled,
but the body doesn't — it keeps screaming "more, more! give me real oils, fiber, polyphenols!"

Brain: "OK!" → gets tricked by junk food and keeps eating it forever

    14AnonymousAug 28, 2026 04:35
    Re: #13

    That's exactly the problem.

Basically, companies sell stuff cheap now and don't care if it wrecks your body ten years down the line. Make the money now, and when something goes wrong, push the responsibility onto whoever bought it — and onto society, via health insurance.

And if consumers don't use their judgment, companies like that just keep raking it in and get even more entrenched. But the ugly part is that the cost still falls on everyone else in the end, since it's society — through health insurance — that ends up footing the bill.

The "fructose is bad" camp says artificial sweeteners are claimed to be bad too, but no significant difference has actually been shown.

Jobs was really into fruit juice, so that actually fits the theory that whole fruit is fine but fruit juice is the dangerous part.

Also he was a picky eater who ate the same things over and over, so his nutrient balance was a mess on top of that — worst combination.

And digging around a bit, apparently he was also exposed to chemicals and lead earlier in life.

Go Go Curry — and this was the price back in 2022?
Kokoichi being the cheap one is settled at this point.

    Background and key points

Ichibanya, the company behind CoCo Ichibanya, has repeatedly revised its prices in recent years amid rising ingredient and labor costs, and this round of late-night surcharges and topping price adjustments appears to be part of that same trend. What actually divided opinion in the thread wasn’t a simple question of “expensive vs. cheap” but a mismatch in what people were comparing. Beef bowl chains typically run on fixed, set-meal pricing, whereas CoCo Ichibanya lets customers freely customize rice portion, curry roux spice level, and toppings, so the final bill can swing wildly depending on the order. Those angry about the price hikes were pointing to the total cost of a typical order, while defenders cited the 300g standard rice serving or per-item prices after coupon discounts — the two sides ended up talking past each other. It’s also worth noting that impressions about the customer base being “good” or “bad” are purely subjective and not backed by any actual data.

  • ‘Otokozaka’ and ‘Rising Impact’ — Classics That Got Cancelled, Then Came Back to Finish the Story

An article introducing works like Otokozaka and Rising Impact — series that were cancelled early in Weekly Shonen Jump, only to be revived years later and finally brought to a proper conclusion — sparked discussion on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board. The thread was full of nostalgic memories about the original cancellations and how the revivals came about, with reactions ranging from “sequels never beat the original” to the more forgiving “at least it got finished.” Posters also debated the merits of each ending, and noted a recurring pattern in how Masami Kurumada’s sequels tend to turn out.

    2026.08.30

Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) at its peak ran countless legendary manga, an era often called the “Jump Golden Age.” While many masterpieces emerged that went on to influence generations, quite a few series were unfortunately cancelled early.

Even so, some of these series were kept alive by die-hard fan support, and despite being left unfinished, made a miraculous comeback and reached a proper conclusion. This time, let’s look at some hidden gems that overcame such hardships to finally reach completion.

So that's how it ends, huh…

    Re: #4
Losing the fight to his rival and then smiling while drifting out to sea on a boat — what a brutal way to end it.
And everyone around him is crying and sending him off with some line about how the hero came from the sea and returns to the sea.
    6AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:45
Maybe Otokozaka would've been better off never getting revived?
    54AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:45
    Re: #6
Well, setting aside the old-school fans, people online these days were probably just having fun with that image as a meme symbolizing the cancellation.
So even if you announce 'it's back!', nobody's actually going to follow it seriously.
    11AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:48
I remember being bummed when Rising Impact ended.
Wait, it really got revived the same year?

I thought it was a miracle.
And then there was a second one…
    14AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:51
Rising Impact was good up through the Camelot Cup, but they power-crept it so hard they wrote themselves into a corner.

    Re: #14
Rushing into crazy power inflation is this author's signature move lol
In his other works too, the hero usually starts with some broken cheat skill, and the moment a rival shows up he 'awakens' even further and instantly goes superhuman lol
    19AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:56
There was also that one where they fought with wooden swords.

    Fuma no Kojiro

Calling Otokozaka 'completed' feels like a stretch — more like it just got cancelled a second time.

Well, they did at least settle things with the western Japan boss.
    31AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:11
In Rising Impact, the elementary-school-age hero and his adult caretaker end up getting romantically involved and even have a kid together — isn't that just straight-up child abuse?
    35AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:13
    Re: #31
Wait, that's what happens in it?
Sounds like some fujoshi's twisted Hikaru Genji Plan~ (a trope, from The Tale of Genji, of raising a child to become one's ideal future spouse)
    38AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:23
    Re: #31
Wasn't the heroine in Ganbare Genki also his elementary school teacher?
    39AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:25
After that, Rising Impact's author left Jump for Magazine.
And what happened next is well known.

No, after that it was Sunday.
    Blizzard Accel and Kongou Banchou.

Bouncing around from Shueisha to Shogakukan to Kodansha and still making it work — the guy must be pretty sharp and good at playing the politics.

He also drew something for Champion, though I forget the title.

Silent Knight Sho ran back in 1992.
It predicted the planet would be destroyed in 40 years due to ozone layer depletion — given the crazy weather lately, that's not entirely off base.
    104AnonymousAug 30, 2026 17:43
    Re: #43
Extreme weather aside, apparently we did manage to avoid the ozone layer collapse, so that part's fine.
    45AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:36
Kurumada has a real tendency to completely stall out on sequels.
Both Otokozaka 2 and Ring ni Kakero 2 were bad enough to feel like entirely different series.
    49AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:40
    Re: #45
Honestly, there's barely any manga out there where the sequel is actually good.
    52AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:44
    Re: #49
If we're working from the premise that sequels almost never surpass the original, then I can personally give a pass to Boruto, Kinnikuman, Worst, Baki, and Tokyo Ghoul…
    55AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:48
    Re: #49
    Can't think of one, honestly…
Setting aside whether it even counts as a 'sequel,' maybe JoJo is the exception?
    46AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:36
Even as a kid, I remember thinking George Akiyama's Kaijin Gonzui and Shaka no Musuko
just didn't really feel like they fit in Weekly Shonen Jump.

    Re: #46
Fun fact, Daijiro Morohoshi's Confucius Ankokuden ran in Jump too.
    48AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:38
Ring ni Kakero, Saint Seiya, B't X, Fuma no Kojiro — I'd say these are the real masterpieces.
    Kojiro's my favorite.

    Re: #48
The Ring ni Kakero we loved is gone now…
'Ring ni Kakero' became 'Ring ni Kakero 1' and turned into garbage.
    53AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:45
Kurumada burned out fast — his dialogue used to be the coolest thing about his work, and that's completely gone now.
    70AnonymousAug 30, 2026 16:16
    Re: #53
That whole 'Fuh' smug laugh becoming a cliché
    is definitely Kurumada's fault.
    57AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:55
I like Saint Seiya, but if you ask me if it's actually good… eh, not really.

Thinking about it now, with Dragon Ball and Fist of the North Star too, I don't think I actually liked the story — I think I just liked the characters.
    80AnonymousAug 30, 2026 16:52
Where's the sequel to Shinji Hiramatsu's Love & Fire already.
    90AnonymousAug 30, 2026 17:25
    Re: #80
Bet by chapter 3 Matsuda-san would show up, quietly take over as the main character, and then it'd get cancelled.
    108AnonymousAug 30, 2026 18:08
    I want an Otokozaka46 remake.
Kurumada-sensei could probably draw 46 distinct characters, no problem.
Throw in like 5 guys with the exact same face as the hero but different hair, plus a fat guy with blank white eyes.
    128AnonymousAug 30, 2026 19:10
    Re: #108
Like in Saint Seiya, just put masks on them and black out their eyes — you could churn out as many as you want.
    114AnonymousAug 30, 2026 18:36
Dunno about Otokozaka, but with Ripa (Rising Impact), I was like 'oh!' when it came back — but it ended up turning into some weird power-battle thing and just fell apart lol. And it's supposed to be a golf manga.
    118AnonymousAug 30, 2026 18:55
    Re: #114
Ashcroft's Pride Snatch move was pretty cool though.

They brought in long-range, mid-range, and short-range 'ability users' and just ran out of ideas.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Otokozaka is known for being cancelled by Masami Kurumada in the 1980s and later getting a conclusion released on YouTube around 2015. Rising Impact ran as a golf manga but was cancelled early, later being revived in a different magazine. The main point of disagreement in the thread was whether the revivals and conclusions should be welcomed — while longtime fans were happy, some pointed out a gap in tone compared to online reactions that had mainly just been feeding off the shock value of the original cancellation. It’s also worth noting that the recurring complaint about Kurumada’s sequels stalling out due to power inflation and broken balance wasn’t just a one-off comment — it reflects a broader assessment of his overall style across multiple works.
