  • Multiple ¥10-Billion Box-Office Contenders Lining Up for Next Year’s Movies — 5ch: “Pokémon’s Just Handing Out Poké Cards Every Week Now”

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” (general live-discussion) board took up movies set for release next year (2027). Detective Conan, Haikyu!!, One Piece, and Pokémon’s theatrical films were all floated as candidates to clear ¥10 billion at the box office, and word surfaced that a new Demon Slayer film is all but locked in for summer 2028. The talk centered less on the films’ quality than on the trading cards handed out as attendance bonuses, with posters speculating that One Piece and Pokémon could boost turnout by giving away a new card every week. At the same time, there was plenty of griping about box office now hinging on freebies, and no shortage of jabs at scalpers cashing in on those bonus cards.

    This, seriously lol

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

A box office of ¥10 billion is generally treated as the benchmark for a major hit in Japanese cinema, and in recent years whether theatrical anime films clear that line has become a recurring topic. The dividing line in this thread was whether turnout is being driven by the popularity of the films themselves or by fans chasing the trading cards given out as attendance bonuses. Posters repeatedly pointed to cases of One Piece and Pokémon bonus cards selling for high prices on the resale market, arguing that this is what’s really boosting attendance figures. It’s worth noting that the claim of a new Demon Slayer film being all but confirmed for summer 2028 is speculation from within the thread, not an official announcement.

  • Stray Dogs Attack 60 Goats in Miyakojima, City Fears ‘Are People Next?’

It has come to light that in Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture, about 60 farmed goats have been bitten by stray dogs in a string of incidents since the start of this year. Such cases were said to be rare in ordinary years, and goat farmers and city officials are increasingly worried that “people, including children, could be attacked next.” There have also been reports of dogs breaching a 3-meter-high fence to get in. On 5ch, users swapped firsthand accounts covering regional differences in how often stray dogs are spotted, the reality of hunting dogs being abandoned in the mountains and turning feral, and the risk of rabies — sparking a broader discussion about what’s driving the wild dog problem.

Such cases were said to be almost nonexistent in ordinary years, making this year’s numbers stand out sharply. Goat farmers and the city are growing increasingly concerned that “the damage to livestock could escalate to the point that people, including children, get attacked.”

In the cities they get caught quickly, so stray dogs have dropped off. But out in the countryside, they're up in the mountains. After a few generations, strays turn into fully wild dogs — they end up as wolf-like wild animals that pack together and attack animals and people.

I've been chased twice by a dog dragging its chain while jogging at night. I'd already scoped out several spots to flee to if I ever got attacked around there, so I ducked into one. Both times it started chasing me near an elementary school, so I ran into the schoolyard, climbed the monkey bars, and waited it out until the dog got bored and left before heading home.

    Re: #61
Ah, yeah — I heard something similar from relatives out in the countryside. A dog that seemed like a tame hunting dog wandered in once, and thinking about it, there's a good chance it had been abandoned by a hunter. I always figured hunters looked after their dogs until the end, so that was a shock.
    89AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:00
    Re: #73
Most of those cases are just dogs that got separated from their owner in the mountains. And that's a story from 30-plus years ago — these days you basically never see stray hunting dogs anymore.

    132AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:35
    Re: #100
Since rabies is a factor too, it'd probably get sorted out once public health authorities step in. Actually, stray dogs were everywhere up through the '70s, but once rabies became a concern they were culled, and by the '90s you barely saw strays anymore.
    110AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:15
A dog that has never once been kept as a human's pet since birth is called a "yaken" (wild dog).
    111AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:15
    Re: #89
Sure, some got separated from their owners, but most are abandoned hunting dogs. Once a hunting dog gets old and stops being useful, it gets dumped in the mountains. Hunting dogs are often lent back and forth between hunters, so they've been bred to obediently follow anyone's commands — but that comes at the cost of a weaker homing instinct, meaning once they're dumped in the mountains, they can't find their way back. And apparently people dump them knowing full well that's exactly what'll happen.
    160AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:04
    Re: #111
Huh, I always pictured them as the hunter's loyal partner, so that's a bit of a shock.

Now that you mention it, maybe because they can't find their own way home, I used to occasionally see one just sitting in the bed of some random, unrelated pickup truck, waiting for its owner.
    117AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:24
If you're going to get rid of a hunting dog, why not just take it to the pound instead? I guess that feels too cruel to actually do?
    120AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:26
    Re: #117
Not just with hunting dogs, but there are quite a few people who abandon dogs because "I don't want to watch it die" or "it's too sad if the pound puts it down." The logic seems to be, "well, if I let it go, maybe it can survive as a stray." There are even people who abandon old dogs on that logic, and honestly, that's just messed up.
    138AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:40
    Re: #132
The pound doesn't have the budget for it either. And even if they spent a fortune catching every single one, some idiot would just go dump more dogs again.
    141AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:43
    Re: #138
If a rabid dog ever bit someone, it'd be an absolute uproar. Then the pound would probably launch a full-scale capture operation, throwing a massive budget at it.

Well, that's Japan for you — stingy on prevention funding, but the moment something turns into a real crisis, they'll blow hundreds of times that amount dealing with it.
    157AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:01
Why not catch them and release them in the mountains of Tohoku?
    159AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:04
    Re: #157
No need to bother — Tohoku can just "source" its own locally lol

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Miyakojima is a remote island off the main Okinawan archipelago, and while stray and wild dogs have sharply declined nationwide in recent years — especially in urban areas — this remains a problem with major regional disparities. In the thread, posters shared firsthand accounts from places like Shunan in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Kagawa Prefecture where wild dogs are still around, which clashed with the common assumption that “you just don’t see them in cities.” Japan has had no confirmed cases of domestically contracted rabies since 1957, so the thread’s worry about “is rabies really a risk” is low as an actual likelihood — though the possibility of it being brought in from overseas or transmitted via wildlife isn’t zero. Culling stray dogs is also complicated by the Animal Welfare and Management Act, meaning municipalities can’t simply euthanize them on their own initiative; capture and shelter housing by public health centers remains the standard response. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over the origin of the wild dogs — whether to see them as hunting dogs that simply got lost, or hunting dogs deliberately abandoned in the mountains — and several specific firsthand accounts were offered backing the latter view.

  • Dodgers Crushed 8-13 After Allowing 5 Homers — Ohtani Gets a Hit But Hits Season’s 2nd-Worst Homer Drought at 54 At-Bats

In a game between the Dodgers and Cardinals on September 1 (September 2 Japan time), the Dodgers allowed 5 home runs and lost 8-13. Shohei Ohtani managed just 1 hit, and his home-run-less at-bat streak has now reached 54 — the second-worst mark of the season. He was pulled partway through the 8th inning. On 5ch, opinions split over what’s behind Ohtani’s slump and whether he needs rest, with some pointing to the toll of two-way play or the demands of childcare, while others were skeptical, asking whether this is really a job tiring enough to need a break.

Doesn't look like it takes much out of you.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Ohtani is heading into the late stretch of the season while continuing his two-way pitcher-hitter role, and posters in the thread had previously noted a tendency for fatigue to show around this same point in past seasons. This latest “54 at-bats without a home run” is the second-worst mark of the season, which numerically backs up just how long the slump has dragged on. At the same time, the Dodgers’ division title is considered nearly certain, and some in the thread argued that rather than pushing to keep playing, he should be saving himself for the playoffs. Views on whether he needs rest and on the cause of the slump ranged from fatigue from childcare to the toll of two-way play, but it’s worth noting these were all speculation from posters — there has been no official explanation from the team or from Ohtani himself.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[US] Dodgers crushed 8-13 after allowing 5 homers — worrying start to September as banged-up Ohtani gets 1 hit but hits season’s 2nd-worst mark of 54 at-bats without a homer… pulled mid-8th inning.”

  • Falcom President: “Multi-platform releases will be our standard going forward”

In an interview with ascii.jp, Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo revealed that the company is moving away from its previous PS5-focused release strategy and will now treat multi-platform releases as the default going forward. The shift comes after Switch and Steam versions proved effective at pulling in new players. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, some users welcomed the policy change, while others pointed out the contradiction of claiming to “go multi-platform” while still skipping an Xbox release — sparking debate over Xbox’s tiny market share in Japan, the limited resources of small-to-mid-size third-party developers, and Falcom’s past struggles breaking into Nintendo hardware.

    — The Switch and PS5 versions of this title come bundled with a download code for ‘Trails in the Sky FC’ as a first-print/pre-order bonus. Could you tell us the story behind including that?

Also, are there any plans for HD remasters of ‘Trails in the Sky SC’ or ‘The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd’ (hereafter, ‘the 3rd’)?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Third-party console gaming used to mean the PlayStation camp, but in recent years the standard workflow has shifted to developing for PC (Steam) first and porting to consoles afterward, which lowers the bar for multi-platform releases, especially for smaller developers. Xbox, meanwhile, has a small installed base in Japan, making it hard to justify porting and operating costs against expected sales — which is why many Japanese publishers leave it out. The download ratio for ‘Trails in the Sky the 1st’ cited in the thread (51% PS5, 27% Switch 2) was calculated by thread posters themselves from an official published breakdown, not pulled directly from a primary source — worth keeping in mind. It’s also worth noting that this “multi-platform” push doesn’t mean releasing on every single platform; it’s a business decision to selectively choose platforms expected to be profitable, a nuance that’s easy to lose sight of from the thread discussion alone.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

It’s no longer unusual for celebrities to take legal action over online defamation, and cases progressing from disclosure requests to damages claims have been increasing in recent years. In the thread, users noted examples where damages of several hundred thousand yen up to around one million yen per case have reportedly been awarded when habitual or malicious behavior is recognized, and specific names of the SNS platforms and aggregator sites allegedly involved were floated. The Act on the Handling of Information Distribution Platforms (the “Joho Platform Act”), which took effect in 2024, requires major SNS operators to respond promptly to takedown requests — legal groundwork that has lowered the barrier for individuals filing disclosure requests. That said, the thread wasn’t uniformly supportive: some asked “why didn’t she deal with this sooner,” while others made cynical remarks framing legal action as a new income stream. It’s worth noting that Watanabe’s side has not disclosed the specific content of the abusive posts, the details of the harm suffered, or how many people are being pursued, so the speculation in the thread should not be treated as established fact.

Nobody could've predicted they'd ship it without even a Gathering Hall (the series' classic multiplayer hub)

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Monster Hunter series has been ported and re-released across handheld and home consoles many times over, and each time 5ch’s gaming board has coined a new insulting nickname — “Busuzawa” (the Vita port), “Buhicchi” (the Switch port), “Half-Rise” (a dismissive term treating Rise as a stripped-down version). The focus of this thread isn’t really those organically-coined insults, though — it’s the ironic twist that the manufacturer’s own official product name turns out to be funnier than any of them, which is exactly the kind of in-joke this “hardware/industry” (geha) board thrives on. That said, claims about which sells better, Rise or Wilds, or whether the Switch 2 version will take off, aren’t established facts — they’re just speculation and impressions from an anonymous message board, so take them with a grain of salt. Some posts in the original thread also contained remarks disparaging specific nationalities or individuals; those have been excluded from this article.

  • CANDY TUNE’s New Single ‘Souishi♡So Free’ Gets Slammed — 5ch: ‘The Secondhand Embarrassment Is Unreal’

The new single “Souishi♡So Free” by idol group CANDY TUNE has been drawing a wave of criticism on X (formerly Twitter), sparking a thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Alongside opinions on the song itself, the thread mixed in popularity comparisons with AKB-affiliated groups and “kawaii-style” (Kawaii Lab) idols, plus debate over Hello! Project’s overall “going viral” strategy. Some commenters harshly criticized the lyrics and concept, while others defended the single by pointing out that past releases followed a similar formula, leading to a split in opinion.

Any other Hello! Project group's new single would've been way better, no question.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

What the thread really centered on wasn’t the quality of “Souishi♡So Free” itself, but the balance of power in popularity between the Hello! Project camp and AKB/Kawaii Lab-affiliated groups (Kawaii Kenkyuujo, or “Kawaii Research Institute,” groups). Because the discussion coincided with a period when AKB-affiliated new singles were gaining traction, two views coexisted: the sense that Hello! Project had been “overtaken,” and a cooler take that “Hello! Project was never reaching a mainstream audience to begin with, so the risk of real backlash is small.” Reactions on 5ch were far from unanimous — plenty of posts pushed back on the intensity of the criticism on X, arguing things like “it’s not that great a song to begin with” or “Hello! Project gets this kind of flak all the time.” One thing readers may misread is that the thread title’s “getting dragged” doesn’t mean X as a whole has reached a consensus — it’s simply 5ch’s shorthand for “this is generating buzz.” Also, proper nouns like “Kawaii Lab,” “Tokisen,” and “Kurakura” are insider abbreviations that can be hard to follow at first glance, but they’re all used as comparison points rooted in the idol industry’s long-running factional rivalries.

  • Japan’s Agriculture Ministry Formalizes Plan to Buy Back 590,000 Tons of Released Rice Reserves

At its Food Council meeting on September 2, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries presented a draft revision to Japan’s basic rice policy guidelines, formally stating a plan to gradually buy back the 590,000 tons of government rice reserves released in 2025 under agriculture ministers Eto and Koizumi. This isn’t a literal repurchase of the exact rice that was released — instead, the government will procure an equivalent amount fresh from the market. On the forum, opinions split over the confusing “buyback” terminology, the use of no-bid contracts for procurement, and whether the “rice exodus” — consumers turning away from rice after prolonged high prices — is actually happening.

At its September 2 Food Council meeting, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries presented a draft revision to the basic rice guidelines (the Basic Guidelines on Stabilizing Rice Supply, Demand, and Prices). Among its reserve-management policies, the draft formally states a plan to gradually buy back the 590,000 tons (brown rice basis) of government rice reserves sold off last year.

Rice consumption is already declining as it is — if prices don't come back down to the low-2,000-yen range, it'll deal a decisive blow to demand.
That means demand disappears, and unless there's a surge of foreign residents or massive overseas exports, more farmers will end up quitting too.

The serious part is the shift away from rice that happened while prices stayed high. According to the industry group Organization for Stable Supply of Rice, average monthly rice consumption per person in fiscal 2025 was 4,435 grams, down 6.1% from the previous year. It looks like more households are choosing cheaper noodles and bread over rice.

Background and key points of the discussion

This “buyback” refers to the government’s plan to purchase, from the open market, an amount of rice equal to the 590,000 tons of reserve rice released in 2025 under agriculture ministers Eto and Koizumi — not a repurchase of the exact rice that was released. Many replies in the thread misunderstood this distinction, and there was skepticism about the term “buyback” itself. The use of no-bid (negotiated) contracts for procurement also became a point of debate from a price-transparency standpoint. Another major thread was the reality of the “rice exodus”: some cited statistics from the Organization for Stable Supply of Rice (showing average monthly per-person consumption down 6.1% year-on-year in fiscal 2025) to argue that soaring prices have changed consumer behavior, while others countered with POS sales data claiming rice is “still selling fine.” Reserve management is highly sensitive to yearly production levels and international conditions, and some pointed out that prioritizing funds for new-crop purchases could mean older stock ends up getting bought back first.

  • Hirotada Ototake wary of censorship: ‘Are we not allowed to depict negative portrayals of disabled people?’

As the planned anime adaptation of the manga “Mii-chan and Yamada-san” sends ripples through the industry — including a formal statement from a group supporting people with intellectual disabilities — author Hirotada Ototake has published a piece questioning whether “negative portrayals of disabled people” should be off-limits, taking a cautious stance against censorship. On 5ch, reactions split: some praised Ototake’s argument, while many others pointed out that what’s actually drawing criticism toward “Mii-chan and Yamada-san” isn’t the portrayal itself so much as its mocking, contemptuous tone. Critics also brought up Ototake’s own position and past remarks, and the discussion spread to cover both the work itself and Ototake’s personal credibility.

An anime adaptation has been greenlit for the manga “Mii-chan and Yamada-san” (Kodansha), set in Tokyo’s Kabukicho nightlife district and following women working as hostesses. The protagonist is said to be modeled on a woman with a mild intellectual disability. The work’s depictions have sparked both support and backlash, including a public statement from a group that supports people with intellectual disabilities.

Author Hirotada Ototake has voiced strong concern that “Mii-chan and Yamada-san” could fuel prejudice and abuse directed at disabled people — but he also believes we should be cautious about regulating only negative portrayals of disability. (The following is Ototake’s own contribution.)

Physical disabilities are obvious to begin with, so it's easy to get sympathy and help from people around you,
and the welfare support is solid too, so you're not struggling to get by.
Even in disability hiring quotas, the popular candidates are physically disabled people whose minds work like anyone else's.

Mental illness and developmental disorders, on the other hand, barely get anyone hired.
A lot of people hide it out of fear of discrimination and just pass as able-bodied,

Probably because that book actually analyzed its subjects properly —

Ototake, who thinks physically disabled people are simply entitled to help,
has zero credibility left on this.

It's bizarre that manga like Demon Slayer or Detective Conan, where countless murders happen, get praised while Mii-chan gets slammed.
    There's no consistency there.

Those depict criminals committing deliberate crimes against a society that condemns them.
Mii-chan is a story where an intellectually disabled woman causes endless trouble, spirals downward, and gets killed.
A story that's fun because it lets you laugh 'lol, intellectually disabled people really are trash' is not the same thing as a suspense story.

The problem with Mii-Yama is the way it mocks that negative portrayal, not the portrayal itself.

There really aren't many manga that take on physically disabled people as a subject.
One clumsy portrayal and it gets banned instantly, so creators must have to be incredibly careful.

    Re: #93
I'd recommend 'Kujo's Great Sin' (Kujo no Taizai) —
it engages with disability far more sincerely than Mii-Yama does.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Mii-chan and Yamada-san” is a manga depicting a woman with a mild intellectual disability working as a hostess, and the publication of a formal statement from a support group turned it into a debate over which should take priority: freedom of expression or preventing the spread of prejudice against disabled people. Ototake’s piece raises the question of whether only “24-Hour TV”-style “inspiration porn” portrayals of disability are being tolerated — but notably, the thread’s reactions focused less on the substance of his argument than on the credibility of Ototake’s own background and past remarks. Some pointed out that physical disabilities receive different levels of support and public understanding than intellectual or developmental disabilities, highlighting how difficult it is to lump all “disabled people” into one category. Note that comments containing baseless personal attacks on the work or its author, or that referenced real criminal cases, have been excluded from this article, which sticks to organizing the debate over censorship itself.

  • Global Temperatures Set to Break 1.5°C Within Years — 5ch: “Call Me Again When It’s Up 15°C”

On September 2, 2026, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a report warning that global average temperatures will rise more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels within just a few years, pushing disaster and health risks to crisis levels. Under current policies, the report projects roughly 2.6°C of warming by 2100; even if every country fully meets its Paris Agreement targets, warming would still reach about 1.8°C. On 5ch, threads split sharply between users citing Nepal’s landslides and Europe’s heat waves to stress the urgency, and others dismissing the findings as “within the margin of error” by pointing to climate swings in the Jomon and Edo periods. The debate also spilled into the gap between rising global averages and how hot or cool any given place actually feels.

On the 2nd, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) published a report warning that global warming will push the worldwide average temperature rise — measured from before the 18th-century Industrial Revolution — past 1.5°C within a few years, raising disaster and health risks to crisis levels. The report states that minimizing the time spent above 1.5°C is key to limiting the damage.

The Paris Agreement, the international framework joined by roughly 190 countries and regions including Japan, marks ten years since taking effect this November and sets a goal of capping warming at 1.5°C. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned, “The world looks set to break the promise it made a decade ago. We need to move away from fossil fuels and expand renewable energy.”

According to the report, if current climate policies continue unchanged, the global average temperature will rise by about 2.6°C by 2100. Even if every country fully meets the emissions-reduction targets it set for itself under the Paris Agreement and reaches net-zero (balancing emissions against absorption by forests and other carbon sinks), warming is still projected to reach about 1.8°C — with the 1.5°C mark expected to be crossed within the next ten years.

Capturing CO2 directly is way more efficient.

Experts worldwide have flatly said that switching to eco-bags, swapping cars for bikes, or ditching plastic bottles for reusable ones doesn't actually accomplish much. Fine if people want to do it anyway, I guess. But more to the point, we just need to capture the CO2 — apparently there are plans to install CO2-capture equipment, targeting 2030.

1.5°C "on average" is seriously bad news. Something that would normally play out over a geological timescale of tens of thousands of years is happening in just two or three hundred years instead — of course that's going to trigger all kinds of natural disasters. Species that can't adapt fast enough will go extinct one after another. And in the end, we won't be able to maintain an environment humans can actually survive in.

Sounds like large-scale landslides — what people call "mountain tsunamis" (山津波) — like the one in Nepal are going to start happening worldwide from now on. Japan's had sudden torrential downpours every single year too, with flood damage popping up all over. Multiple typhoons forming at once and hitting back-to-back. In 1958 an earthquake in Alaska caused a glacier collapse, triggering a tsunami on the order of 500 meters, apparently. So even the one in Nepal was actually small-scale by comparison.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015 and took effect in 2016, making this year its tenth anniversary; nearly 190 countries and regions have committed to keeping warming within 1.5°C. The figure from UNEP’s report — that warming would still reach 1.8°C even if every country fully met its targets — exposes the limits of nations’ self-set Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and serves as a warning against simple optimism. What split opinion in the thread was the difference between “the rise in global average temperature” and “how a given year or region actually feels.” Japan can have a cool summer in any given year even as the global average keeps climbing — and conversely, skeptical arguments citing Earth’s history of warm-cold swings, such as the Jomon-period sea-level rise or the Edo-period mini ice age, tend to overlook that today’s changes are happening within a span of a few centuries, an extremely short window on a geological timescale. Some extreme takes also surfaced, like “on a cosmic scale humanity doesn’t matter at all” — but what the report is actually concerned with is simply whether the environment can remain one humans can survive in, and in several exchanges the two sides were clearly arguing past each other at completely different scales.
