  • Hello! Project’s “DECA!BEAT” Unveils New Visuals and Characters — 5ch: “Not Cute in the Slightest”

The official X (Twitter) account for Hello! Project-affiliated unit DECA!BEAT has unveiled new visuals and new characters. As part of the “Deca-bo MISSION vol.1” collaboration with sustainable brand Earth hacks, each member has been given an animal-themed character. Reactions on 5ch were split — harsh comments like “not cute in the slightest” and “come on, make cuter characters” stood out, alongside posts enjoying the game of guessing which animal motif (sheep, cat, bird, etc.) matched each member’s nickname or image. Some also noted the previous video racked up 100,000 views within a week of release, suggesting the project itself is drawing plenty of attention.

Yoneki is super cute though (member nickname)

They're putting out character merch, so everyone go buy some, okay?

There's one that looks like the little chick from LINE stickers.

Was it really okay not to save the cat character for Eba? (member nickname)

Miimi's the sheep, and Eba really does seem cat-like
Not sure about Runo — is Hana a bird? A penguin?
Geta might be a lion, and Kamirena's just tiny for now

It took forever for the dance-practice video to drop, but the new visuals came out crazy fast.

Who's even the target audience for these characters?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

DECA!BEAT is a Hello! Project-affiliated project unit, and this time, as a tie-up with sustainable brand Earth hacks, each member was given an animal-shaped character. On the thread, confused reactions like “wait, it’s a new character and not new outfits?” appeared alongside posts enjoying the guessing game of matching each animal motif — cat, sheep, bird — to a member’s nickname or image, leaving opinion divided. Some exchanges also assumed a member had left the group, but this could not be confirmed within the thread itself, so it should not be treated as a confirmed fact based on any official announcement.

  • Video of a man standing his ground against a delinquent draws praise — 5ch: “The guy who won’t listen to reason is the strongest”

A video posted on X showing a man who refused to back down even while facing off against a delinquent-looking (“yankii”) opponent has become a hot topic on 5ch. The video, uploaded to video.twimg.com, also shows a woman stepping in between the two men to try to calm things down. On 5ch, some praised the man’s unflinching attitude as having a “strong-man aura,” while others called his opponent “lame, for a delinquent” or compared him to manga characters — with the discussion drifting toward the idea that you can’t judge someone by looks alone.

    Background and Talking Points

“Street trouble” videos going viral on social media are a perennial topic on 5ch, and this time the focus was on a man with a “chi-gyu” look who refused to back down. “Chi-gyu” is internet slang originally used to mock a certain appearance — glasses, a side-parted hairstyle, and so on — but in recent years it’s often invoked in a “don’t judge a book by its cover” sense, and several posters here noted that otaku-looking guys sometimes turn out to have real martial-arts experience. That said, the video doesn’t show the whole incident, so what triggered it and how it ended remain unclear, and most of the replies don’t go much beyond surface-level opinions about “who looks lamer” or “who’d actually win.” The woman who stepped in to mediate also drew attention, but it’s worth noting that nothing about her identity has been verified.

  • Nikkei Sinks 1,889 Points at Close — Third Straight Drop as Global Rates Climb

On September 2, 2026, Japan’s Nikkei average tumbled for a third straight session in Tokyo trading, closing down 1,889.70 points (2.85%) at 64,325.64. Concerns over accelerating inflation and expanding fiscal spending have fueled expectations of higher interest rates worldwide, dragging down stock markets across Asia. As some observers began drawing comparisons to the 1987 Black Monday crash, reactions on 5ch split between “it’ll keep falling” and “we’ve already hit bottom,” with further disagreement over comparisons to South Korean stocks and whether households even have the spare cash to invest.

Japan’s Nikkei average dropped sharply for a third consecutive session in Tokyo trading on the 2nd, closing down 1,889.70 points (2.85%) from the previous day at 64,325.64. Concerns about accelerating inflation and fiscal expansion have strengthened expectations of higher interest rates worldwide, pushing Asian stock markets broadly lower. Some have begun to worry about a repeat of 1987’s “Black Monday,” when stocks crashed following a global rise in interest rates.

The Nikkei opened lower and extended its losses as the session went on, with the decline briefly widening to 1,999 points at one stage…(continues in the paid edition, 1,736 characters remaining)

    Re: #189
Bankruptcies are at a record high
And they're still hiking rates, so I guess they figure they can

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The Nikkei’s sharp drop comes against a backdrop of global inflationary pressure and mounting expectations that interest rates will keep climbing worldwide. As the cited article notes, 1987’s Black Monday is remembered as a moment when stocks crashed shortly after a global rise in interest rates, and some are drawing parallels to the current slide. Opinions in the thread split over whether the market will keep falling or has already bottomed out, with bulls betting on the Nikkei reaching 100,000 clashing against those expecting a prolonged slump in the 70,000 range. Some also compared a potential unwinding of the yen carry trade to the 1998 Russian crisis and the 2008 Lehman shock. There was also debate over whether ordinary households can even afford to invest in stocks, with some citing NISA usage rates and household savings figures as evidence of limited investment capacity — though it’s worth noting these figures were cited by thread participants themselves, and their sources and reference dates could not be confirmed within the article.

  • University of Tokyo Slammed Over New ‘Value Creation Faculty’ — ‘So Other Departments Don’t Create Value?’

Criticism has poured in on social media over the name of the new faculty the University of Tokyo announced it will launch in fall 2027: the “Value Creation Faculty” (UTokyo College of Design). On 5ch’s News Express+ board too, discussion centered on how the term “value creation” happens to overlap with the origin of Soka Gakkai’s name, along with a general unease that the name seems to belittle the university’s existing faculties. More than the substance of the new faculty, the debate focused on the naming choice itself — with comparisons to existing interdisciplinary faculties like Keio SFC’s “Faculty of Policy Management,” and concerns it might mass-produce unspecialized jacks-of-all-trades lacking real expertise.

Negative reactions are piling up on social media over the University of Tokyo’s new “Value Creation Faculty” (UTokyo College of Design), set to launch in fall 2027. Criticism of the name — like “so the other faculties don’t create value?” — has spread alongside broader questions about enrollment-quota cuts at existing faculties.

On X and elsewhere, critical posts about the “Value Creation Faculty” name piled up one after another: “Does that mean the other faculties don’t create value?”, “It’s hollow,” “People are going to think it’s a scam.”

Posts pointing out that “value creation” overlaps with the origin of Soka Gakkai’s name were also prominent.

This country went downhill the moment it scrapped buruma (the old tight gym shorts) and ruined the sukumizu (school swimsuit) — that's when the birthrate started tanking, national strength declined, and now we're stuck with a weak yen and high prices while everyone suffers.
Looking back, ditching buruma was the real turning point.

I went to a university with a Faculty of Policy Management, and a professor there said 'that place can do everything, but its grads end up able to do nothing.' UTokyo's cutline is brutal — you basically need 900 out of 1000 on the Common Test just to be in range. Even as someone who went through Science I back in the old Center Test era and ended up in Information Science, I think that's excessive.
The second-stage exam has meatier content, but it's actually easier than the Common Test.

Since it's UTokyo the content's probably solid, but the department name is way too uncool.
The traditional one-character faculties — Letters, Science, Law, Medicine — have a certain beauty to them.
Engineering, Agriculture, Pharmacy are one-character too.
Economics, Education — fine, still okay.
But once you hit four characters, it starts smelling like a bottom-tier, 'F-rank' school. (F-rank = slang for the lowest tier of universities, essentially open admission)

UTokyo has always taken pride in its College of Arts and Sciences, so this is probably in that lineage.

People used to flock to it because working for the country came with a lot of sweet perks down the line, including cushy post-retirement placements (amakudari). But those perks have steadily gotten stripped away, so now it's only sketchy types who go for it.
They could just… raise the salary.

Background and key points of this discussion

The word “value creation” traces back to the educational theory of “value-creating pedagogy” proposed by Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Soka Gakkai’s first president — there is no organizational connection between UTokyo’s new faculty and Soka Gakkai. The “overlapping origin” flagged in the thread simply means the two happen to share the same term from educational philosophy by coincidence; it doesn’t mean UTokyo modeled itself on Soka Gakkai, and this point is easy to misread. Nor is this the first time a new interdisciplinary faculty has sparked debate — ever since Keio University’s SFC (Faculty of Policy Management and Faculty of Environment and Information Studies) opened in 1990, arguments for and against this style of education that spans existing academic fields have recurred. What actually divided opinion in the thread was less the rightness of the name itself than whether an educational model that trades away specialization for cross-disciplinary generalists can really hold up in the real world. The details of the faculty’s curriculum were not yet public at the time of reporting, and it’s worth reading the criticism with that in mind, since much of it is speculation based only on the name and the announcement itself.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Newsplus) thread “[UTokyo] Criticism piles up over new ‘Value Creation Faculty’ … ‘So other faculties don’t create value?’ ‘Hollow name’ ‘Overlaps with the origin of Soka Gakkai’s name’“.

  • Which US State Is the Most Obscure? 5ch: “Nobody Even Noticed Indiana”

A casual thread on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board asked “which US state is the most obscure?” and posters quickly threw out names like Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Rhode Island, and Maine. Others pushed back, arguing that states home to famous tourist spots like Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore hardly qualify as “obscure,” leading to a split over how exactly to measure name recognition. Late in the thread, one poster pointed out that Indiana hadn’t been mentioned even once — highlighting just how little presence the state has. In the end, the discussion never landed on a single conclusion.

    Re: #100
I think the Indy 500 is pretty famous though

    Background and Talking Points

There’s no official definition of what makes a state “obscure,” and the thread’s central tension comes from posters using completely different yardsticks for “name recognition.” One camp pushed back by pointing to famous landmarks or cultural touchstones — Yellowstone (Wyoming), Mount Rushmore (South Dakota), the settings of Stephen King novels (Maine) — arguing these states can’t really be called unknown. The other camp was talking about “obscure” at the level of barely knowing a state’s capital or even that it exists, and the two sides talked past each other for much of the thread. The observation that Illinois has a low profile despite containing Chicago, the US’s third-largest city, illustrates how population or economic size doesn’t necessarily translate into outside name recognition — a comparison also drawn to how Aichi Prefecture is barely known abroad. One thing readers might get wrong is assuming “obscure” simply tracks with a small population or land area; the thread suggests that indirect recognition through food brands — like Kentucky Fried Chicken or Idaho potatoes — can shape a state’s image just as much.

  • Honogurashi no Niwa Passes 200,000 Units Sold in Japan — 5ch: ‘It’s Been Sitting Near the Top of the eShop Charts’

Nippon Ichi Software’s farming-meets-horror simulation game “Honogurashi no Niwa” has surpassed 200,000 cumulative units sold in Japan roughly a month after launch, according to an announcement on the game’s official X (Twitter) account. Thread posters were divided over whether that figure leans more toward physical or digital sales, and whether PS5 or Switch/Switch2 is driving the numbers. With Famitsu’s weekly retail tracker showing a mere 1,186 physical units sold, some argued physical sales must be sluggish, while others pointed to the game’s strong reviews on the eShop and Steam as proof it’s still selling briskly.

“Honogurashi no Niwa” Tops 200,000 Units Sold in Japan

About a month after launch, thanks to everyone who picked up the game, we’ve surpassed 200,000 cumulative units sold in Japan.

Since this is order/reservation numbers rather than shipment numbers, the Switch2 version — which is still seeing an ongoing physical stock shortage — is probably favored here.

Only a Japan-only version has been released, yet 70% of its Steam reviews are from overseas players.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Honogurashi no Niwa” is a farming-meets-horror simulation released by Nippon Ichi Software, and thread posters note that its development team includes people known for the “Yomawari” series. The “200,000 units” figure comes from an official social media announcement, and it’s not clear whether it combines physical and digital sales or how it breaks down by platform. Where the thread split was over how to interpret the gap between Famitsu’s low weekly retail figure (1,186 units) and the impression that the game is “still selling,” given its steady position near the top of the eShop charts and its strong Steam reviews. Some argued the low physical number reflects a shift to digital due to stock shortages, while others see it as simply sluggish physical retail sales — both remain speculation. It’s also worth noting, since it’s easy to overlook, that despite being a Japan-only release, 70% of its Steam reviews come from overseas users, showing its reputation is spreading abroad.

A thread on 5channel’s “Live Everything” board (nicknamed NanJ) blew up over customers who line up at a staffed register even when self-checkout machines are free. The original poster asked, “What’s the deal with people who go out of their way to line up at a staffed register instead of using self-checkout?” and the replies poured in. Sympathetic takes like “I just want to ease the staff’s workload” and “some items, like cigarettes, can only be bought at a staffed register” clashed with efficiency-minded opinions like “if the price is the same, you should pick whichever line moves faster.” The discussion also branched into talk about security cameras monitoring self-checkout stations.

If it gets me out of the store faster, a little extra effort is fine by me

Background and key points of this topic

Self-checkout has spread rapidly in recent years amid Japan’s labor shortage, but some products — like cigarettes, which require age verification — and certain transactions can only be handled at a staffed register, so people’s reasons for choosing one or the other vary. In the thread, opinions split between “it’s odd to make customers do the work for the same price, so there should be a discount” and “people should just use whichever line is open, no big deal,” with no clear consensus emerging. Self-checkout stations staffed with monitors or security cameras as an anti-shoplifting measure also came up, but it’s worth noting this applies only to some stores rather than being a feature common to all self-checkout systems — an easy point to misread. It’s also worth remembering that self-checkout isn’t a cure-all, since certain operations still require a staffed register, as several posters pointed out.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5channel (Live Everything/NanJ board) thread “The truth behind the fools who insist on lining up at a staffed register like idiots when self-checkout is wide open.”

  • Is Cooking at Home Worth It or a Waste? 5ch: ‘I Have the Will to Save Money, But No Energy to Actually Cook’

A thread titled “Cooking for yourself feels pointless when you’re single” popped up on 5ch’s News VIP board. The thread starter argued that cooking at home—from shopping to cooking to cleanup—takes 1 hour 20 minutes, while eating out only takes 30 minutes, effectively saving an hour. Home cooks pushed back with “eating out or grabbing food is way more expensive” and “it’s additive-free and healthy,” but the eating-out camp held firm with “I have no energy to bother saving money” and “if you live alone, the cost of eating out doesn’t even hurt.” Partway through, the debate veered off into a nitpicky argument over how wide or narrow the variety of home-cooked recipes really is.

    1AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:15
Cook rice, run to the supermarket while it's cooking, whip up something simple, and clean up after—1 hour 20 minutes total.
    Eating out: 30 minutes.
    That's about an hour saved.
    11AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:21
Cooking itself doesn't take that long. Maybe 15 minutes? Cleanup eats up a decent chunk of time too though—washing dishes, drying them, wiping down the table and counter you used.

    Re: #108
You're getting put on my ignore list next, so there's that.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Whether cooking at home actually pays off compared to eating out comes down to how much you count your own labor—cooking time, ingredient costs, cleanup effort—as a cost. As the thread itself shows, with figures ranging from “700-800 yen per home-cooked meal” to “100-200 yen per home-cooked meal” appearing side by side, the gap depends heavily on the grade of ingredients used, which makes a simple price comparison against chain restaurants unreliable. The claim that “home cooking is healthier because it has fewer additives” doesn’t necessarily hold up either, if you’re using store-bought seasonings and processed ingredients. The back half of the thread strays from the main topic into a circular argument over how to define the “range” of home-cooked recipes, and readers should note that the discussion loses steam as an argument about economic rationality well before it wraps up.

  • “Forget about me—worry about Japan instead”: 92-year-old journalist Soichiro Tahara’s “last testament”

A Mainichi Shimbun interview with 92-year-old journalist Soichiro Tahara has become a hot topic on 5channel’s News Speed+ board. Tahara, who has led Japanese TV journalism for decades, reportedly said he “still has things to say about Japan” even after apparently having a health scare not long ago. The thread lit up with nostalgic comments about the late-night debate show “Asa made Nama TV” (“Live TV Till Morning”) and disbelief over his age, while critics who called broadcast journalism “a farce where everyone leaves the real work to someone else” clashed with defenders who argued that “the truth can only be found through debate”—turning the thread into a wider argument about what it means to be a journalist.

Life is a series of once-in-a-lifetime encounters, and reporting is no different.

Soichiro Tahara, who has led Japanese TV journalism for years, is now 92. Not long ago, he reportedly came close to death.

But he still has plenty to say about Japan today. Intending to receive his “last testament,” I went to see the great veteran again after a long while.

There are plenty of people out there who claim to be "worried about Japan." But he's a journalist—he understands it's not a farce; nobody actually knows the "right answer," and the answer can only be found through debate.

Background and key points of this discussion

Soichiro Tahara joined Tokyo Channel 12 (now TV Tokyo), which launched in 1964, after switching careers from a regular corporate job, and in later years became widely known as the host of “Asa made Nama TV” (“Live TV Till Morning”). This Mainichi Shimbun interview was conducted with the idea of leaving his words behind as a “last testament” after he reportedly had a health scare; the specifics of what he actually said are left to the original article, and the 5ch thread itself doesn’t dwell much on the details of his remarks. Where reactions split was over how to judge his stance as a journalist: critics argued he “just talks without backing it up with action,” while defenders countered that “there’s value in continuing the debate itself instead of rushing to a conclusion.” On the subject of him still being active at 92, there was a mix of surprise and admiration, alongside skeptical comments citing healthy life expectancy—making individual variation that can’t be captured by age alone a talking point.

On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, reactions were mixed: some users were excited for the stylish new moves, while others said the animation still feels dragged down by Wilds’ original sluggish combat, raised concerns over the director being replaced by someone from the Exoprimal team, and worried about monsters being recycled. The game’s sales also became a talking point, having reached 11.4 million units sold one year after launch.

Means the 'poison spider' scurried off somewhere (nickname for a former staffer)
    9AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:30
They said this one's going for bright fields under blue skies.
Wilds had such a gloomy atmosphere.
    10AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:31
Did anyone actually watch this and think 'looks fun!'?
Being able to enjoy literally anything is a talent, I guess.
    11AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:31
Wake up — it's not about the action, it's about build balance and material grinding.
    67AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:42
    Re: #11
    This.

The skill system especially is a disaster.
    12AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:32
If they're holding back footage, they should show more than this.
Otherwise it just comes off as 'that's all you've got?'
    13AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:33
Huh? I figured they'd save this for a State of Play.
    14AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:33
I wonder how much care and realism actually went into 'Boost Action'?
    16AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:34
Just forget the new moves and add more monster variety already.
We don't need any more octopuses, monkeys, or spiders.
    20AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:36
    Re: #16
Nah, they already spent the effort modeling that octopus skeleton, so expect 2 or 3 more variants using it
    25AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:43
I thought the World-style games had a policy against toy-like gimmicks like this.
Guess that's completely out the window now.
    29AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:47
    Re: #25
The Slinger was already kind of a toy to begin with
    37AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:51
    Re: #25
Should've said that back when World added the Slinger and Iceborne added the Clutch Claw.
This is the price of coddling players all this time.
    28AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:47
    What's with this lame-looking gauge?
    33AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:49
    Re: #28
Better than a health gauge that goes haywire whenever a big attack is incoming, but still lame…
    30AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:48
Just show us the Gunlance already.
    We'll talk after that.
    38AnonymousSep 2, 2026 16:56
    Re: #30
Turns out it's just 'charge it up while guarding'…

    Re: #30
Gunlance mains live in constant fear of getting nerfed with every patch
    48AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:02
    How dead this thread is
    says it all.

The only Monster Hunter I ever quit partway through
    97AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:48
    Re: #49
    Same here.
I'm never buying another Monster Hunter from the Fujioka-Tokuda combo (a fan nickname combining two developers' names)

    [MH Wilds Sales Progression]
    ■ Feb 2025: 8 million units (hit in 3 days after launch)
    ■ Mar 2025: 10 million units (1 month after launch, fastest pace ever)
    ■ Mar 2026: 11.4 million units (growth has slowed considerably since launch)
    63AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:37
    Re: #58
That's like 170,000 units in 3 months — 'slowed' doesn't even begin to cover it…
    62AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:37
Like always, Lance and Hammer will duke it out for dead last, and Hammer will come out on top… of the bottom.

The Third Prince's Curse (a running community joke)
    80AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:57
    Re: #62
Hammer was solidly upper-mid tier in Sunbreak, damn it 😡
Even though it's dead last in popularity 🥺
    70AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:48
World also only really shined at the very end with Iceborne, so people got this false memory that the whole thing was great throughout.
Hoping Ascension pulls the same trick, though it might not.
    73AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:49
    Re: #70
Yeah, it was straight-up garbage, total dumpster fire back then
    74AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:50
    Re: #70
It got mocked nonstop as 'runny garbage' back then, lol
People really are rewriting their own memories
    71AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:48
Getting dragged back toward MH XX (Generations) again.
The glasses crew needs to just admit Ichinose's take was better.
    76AnonymousSep 2, 2026 17:55
    Re: #71
If you're bringing back XX, bring back Aerial style too
    83AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:04
I bet 'Sweat Dance' (a 5ch pun on 'Ascension,' since 'Asen' sounds like the Japanese word for sweat) gets more Switch 2-focused additions — it already has that Generations/Rise kind of vibe.
    86AnonymousSep 2, 2026 18:06
    Re: #83
Ah I see — since it's coming to Switch 2 as well, that's why they're throwing in more Generations/Rise-style elements

Background and Key Points of Discussion

The Monster Hunter series has a history of adding new action mechanics with each expansion or major update, and this new “Boost Action” system fits that pattern. Opinions in the thread split over how the Great Sword moves in the video — some felt it looked less than snappy for a supposedly new feature and still weighed down by Wilds’ base-game feel, while others argued this was just a partial preview and shouldn’t be judged too harshly. The thread also touched on a possible change in the development team, though the specifics of roles and circumstances couldn’t be confirmed within the thread and remain speculative. As for the sales figures, comparing the strong initial launch pace to the more recent numbers can make growth look like it’s stalling, but it’s also fairly typical for major titles to see sales growth slow down several months after release.
