  • 5ch on Apple’s New iPhone Event: “Guess Nobody Cares This Much Anymore”

In the early hours of September 10, 2026, a thread was live-blogging Apple’s new iPhone launch event. Right from the start, word spread that “there’s apparently no plain iPhone 18,” but the conversation quickly drifted away from the new hardware itself and toward comments that “this isn’t as exciting as last time.” Posters said they could barely detect any major leap in camera or audio performance, and reflected on how it’s already been a year since the eSIM-only switch — while opinions on whether a foldable iPhone is even necessary were split, even among people who’d actually used one.

You'd get it if you actually used one

    Background and Talking Points

Apple’s keynotes tend, year after year, to have most of their content already revealed by pre-event leaks, so live commentary on the day often has the flavor of “checking the answers” rather than genuine surprise. In this thread too, rather than excitement over new information, comments focused on the lack of meaningful differences from past models and on price. Opinions on the foldable iPhone were split even among people who’d actually used similarly shaped devices — some said “I ended up not using it,” others said “you’d get it if you tried it” — suggesting users’ opinions were already fairly set before the event even began. It’s worth noting that the price figures and adoption numbers mentioned in the thread are based on 5ch users’ personal impressions and hearsay, not on any official Apple announcement or public statistics.

  • Which Juice=Juice TV Appearances Over the Past Six Months Were the Best? 5ch: “I Seriously Cried During the First CDTV Episode”

A thread on a Hello! Project-focused 5ch board looked back at the TV programs Juice=Juice appeared on over the past six months, asking fans to weigh in on “what was good.” Comments poured in episode by episode: some said they cried during the first CDTV appearance, others praised the flame effects used in the second one, and several noted that on NHK’s “Uta Con,” the whole group appeared and got great treatment standing alongside major veteran artists. Topics ranged widely, from production highlights like the collaboration with Hiromi Go and the appearance at the Hamada Music Festival, to lighter behind-the-scenes moments like a member’s cat nearly escaping during filming — with posters split over which episode left the biggest impression.

    Background and Key Points

Juice=Juice is an idol group belonging to Hello! Project, and fans often pay close attention to things like how often the group appears on music programs, how they’re positioned alongside other performers, and their so-called “treatment” as a barometer of the group’s standing. CDTV, Music Station, the TV Tokyo Music Festival, and NHK’s “Uta Con” are all flagship music programs, where the scale of the production and the star power of fellow performers tend to become talking points. In this thread, alongside opinions on the production quality, there were also posts mocking members’ singing and posts disparaging the appearance of other groups who appeared alongside them; those personal attacks were excluded when compiling this article.

  • Voice actor Junichi Suwabe joins Suica mascot race with his own fan art — 5ch: “The penguin was fine as it was”

On September 8, JR East unveiled three finalist designs for a new mascot to replace the long-beloved “Suica Penguin,” and opened voting to the public. In response, voice actor Junichi Suwabe posted an original character of his own design on social media, sparking a huge reaction. On 5ch threads, many pointed out that the official candidates felt oddly derivative, while just as many argued there was no need to replace the penguin in the first place — leaving opinions split between the old and new characters.

    Wed, 9/9, 17:20

On September 8, JR East announced, “We’re starting the selection vote for Suica’s new mascot,” unveiling three characters to replace the familiar “Suica Penguin.” While the vote is underway, an original character from a hugely popular voice actor has become a massive hit.

“Junichi Suwabe posted an illustration as his own ‘candidate.’ Suwabe, now 54, shot to fame in 2002 as Keigo Atobe in Prince of Tennis, and has since been active across anime, dubbing, narration, and hosting work” (entertainment reporter).

    Watermelon squid

    Background and Key Points

What JR East actually published was a vote among three official finalist designs — Junichi Suwabe’s illustration was an unofficial “self-nomination” he posted on social media, and it isn’t actually one of the options in the real vote, which is easy to misunderstand. The article doesn’t reveal why the penguin is being replaced, and while the thread speculated about licensing fees or the involvement of the rights-holder company, none of that is confirmed information. Many commenters pointed out that the new candidates felt derivative — resembling Jibanyan from Yo-kai Watch or a past Tokyo Olympics mascot candidate — while a fair number also voiced support for Suwabe’s illustration, leaving opinions split over character design, official or not.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “Popular voice actor Junichi Suwabe joins the race for Suica’s new mascot to replace the “penguin” with his own illustration — a storm of praise: “I want to vote for this!”“.

  • Two-Way Doubts Grow Around Ohtani: US Media Says ‘His Physical Peak Has Passed’

Following reports that pitcher Shohei Ohtani is dealing with concerns in multiple areas — his left knee, right upper arm, and neck — that are affecting both his pitching and hitting, the US outlet FanSided has raised doubts about whether his two-way career can continue. The Los Angeles Dodgers have been managing the situation with scheduled rest days, but the article takes a harsh view, stating that “his physical peak has passed.” On 5channel threads, opinions were split between optimists citing his track record of defying repeated “limit” theories, and those frustrated that neither his pitching nor hitting is at full strength, calling for him to focus on just one role.

“Is it no longer possible?” Doubts emerge over Shohei Ohtani’s two-way future!? US media points out his “physical peak has passed”

Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani is dealing with concerns in multiple areas — his left knee, right upper arm, and neck — that are affecting not just his pitching but his hitting as well.

While the team is managing the situation as best it can with scheduled rest days, the US outlet FanSided has taken a harsh view of his continuing as a two-way player.

    64AnonymousSep 9, 2026 19:13
    Re: #4
Ohtani's problem is that it's hard to give up either pitching or hitting.
Even this year, his early-season pitching numbers were top class.
It's hard to tell a starter at that level to quit.
    But he's also a top-tier power hitter.
Not just on the Dodgers — the best in the league.
    6AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:49
Say what you want about him being 'done' — he's still stealing bases needlessly.
    7AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:49

    18AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:53

    21AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:55
Say all that, but you were all thrilled when he hit a home run right after pitching that same day.
The team's already said he'll keep doing two-way next season too — it's something only Ohtani can pull off.
I'm just here to enjoy it.

    25AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:58
If they end up paying him a massive salary after he's no longer useful, it's really just a matter of paying upfront versus paying later — but I bet it still doesn't sit right with the team.
    27AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:58
If he has to pick just one, it should be pitching.
    28AnonymousSep 9, 2026 18:58

    38AnonymousSep 9, 2026 19:03
    Ohtani's finished.
He's not good enough as just a pitcher or just a DH, so they gave him the two-way gimmick to compensate.
The team doesn't actually need him doing any of this, stealing bases included.
It's all just aimed at generating TV coverage.
Once he can't do that anymore, the old media will be in trouble.
He's boring enough as it is.

I think Ohtani's done, but it's kind of funny that he still has to work for seven more years.
At this rate he won't be able to fulfill the contract.

    Re: #104
Way better than being the one getting farmed by scrubs.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Ohtani won the AL home run title and MVP in the same season back in 2023, putting up top-tier numbers as a two-way player. This season, though, he’s been in and out of action due to a combination of issues with his left knee, right upper arm, and neck. This “limit” theory comes from a single outlet, FanSided — neither the team nor Ohtani himself has said anything about giving up on the two-way role. His contract with the Dodgers was never conditioned on him staying two-way; the salary is guaranteed regardless of his pitching or hitting performance, so a slump doesn’t directly lead to the contract being voided. Where opinions on the thread diverged was over how much to trust his track record of repeatedly overturning “limit” theories in the past, and how the team itself views the burden of continuing both roles while carrying injury risk.

  • New ‘Torneko’s Great Adventure’ Coming to Every Platform — 5ch: ‘A Few Years Ago This Would’ve Been Snubbed’

Square Enix has announced that its new Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon title will launch across every major platform — Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, iOS, Android, and Google Play Games on PC. It’s already live early on Google Play for 3,500 yen. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, discussion covered reactions to the price as well as surprise that the Dragon Quest family of titles, long tilted toward PlayStation, is now rolling out to every platform including Xbox — sparking debate over Square Enix’s past platform strategy.

Oh, it's coming to phones too.
Touchscreen controls are always a pain — gotta go with Switch handheld mode.

    Re: #92
11 S came out later anyway, and it was this weird release where an unplanned PC version somehow shipped first, plus it got delayed over and over because of Horii's 'grown-up circumstances,' to the point they held a whole event just to announce the release date.
And Treasures is obviously built off recycled mobile-game assets lol
    96AnonymousSep 10, 2026 02:04
    Re: #92
Square Enix has openly said it releases games specifically to promote PlayStation — Nomura himself said FF's reveal came too early for promotional reasons, and there were in-store POPs saying 'Only on PlayStation can you play the latest FF and DQ together!' The whole run-up to DQ11's release was rough too, honestly: Nintendo had been the one promoting Dragon Quest overseas even though it doesn't sell well abroad, and Square Enix basically kicked them while they were down — making it a de facto exclusive on a PS4 that wasn't even selling well yet, with the 3DS version treated as just a safety net, no overseas release, and no say for Nintendo. Though in the end the 3DS version actually lost to the PS4 version.

So the last Dragon Quest Mystery Dungeon game was Yangus on PS2. In terms of actual new entries, every one except the first was on PlayStation. That was 2006, so it's been stuck for 20 years… though since this isn't technically a new entry, maybe it's still stuck.

Not many people know this, but there were about three released back in the feature-phone era.

    Background and Talking Points

Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon is part of the Mystery Dungeon series, and Square Enix has a history of rolling out Dragon Quest-related titles heavily favoring PlayStation in recent years. The simultaneous announcement across all platforms this time, including Xbox Series X|S, drew surprised reactions on the thread, with some saying ‘a few years ago this would’ve been snubbed.’ Later in the discussion, posters brought up past cases like the Switch version of Dragon Quest XI S and Treasures being timed exclusives on Nintendo platforms, and opinions were divided on how much Square Enix’s platform strategy has actually shifted away from its PlayStation focus. It’s worth noting, though, that this remains speculation among users — Square Enix has not officially confirmed any change in policy. On pricing, opinions split between those who feel 3,500 yen is steep for a remaster and those waiting for a sale.

So we've finally got a successor to Erika Sawajiri (actress known for a major scandal), huh

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Regarding Kentaro Sakaguchi, his romance with Mitsuki Takahata was reported in 2016 and they reportedly broke up around 2021; after that, in 2025 “Weekly Bunshun” scooped his relationship and cohabitation with his now-wife (the hair and makeup artist). This time’s announcement contains only the single line “the relationship is real,” without touching on when it began or whether it overlapped with his other relationships. As a result, discussion boards focused on the timeline — who he was dating from when to when — which developed into speculation that it may have overlapped with previously reported romances. However, all the agency actually confirmed was the simple fact that “he married the woman reported last year” — it did not acknowledge any overlap with other relationships, a nuance that’s easy to misread given the word “real” in the headline.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “[Bunshun] Mei Nagano: “The relationship was real” — Kentaro Sakaguchi, who announced his marriage to a private-sector woman, and the “messy love triangle” between Nagano and his bride.”

  • Hiroyuki: ‘Self-Driving Cars Will Let America Eat Japan’s Lunch’

Businessman Hiroyuki reportedly shared his views on YouTube about the slow adoption of self-driving cars in Japan, saying, “At this rate, America is going to eat us alive.” On 5channel, some argued that Japan’s narrow roads and complex traffic rules make practical self-driving deployment difficult, while others voiced alarm over Japan’s so-called “digital deficit,” estimated at ¥7 trillion a year. Still, plenty of posters brushed off Hiroyuki’s comment itself as “just him talking nonsense as usual,” leaving opinions split.

Hiroyuki shares his take on Japan’s stalled self-driving rollout: “Unfortunately, in five or ten years…”

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura (49) updated his official YouTube channel by the 9th with his take on the issue of self-driving car adoption.

On the fact that self-driving hasn’t taken off in Japan, Hiroyuki commented, “At this rate, we’re just going to get eaten alive by America.”

They'll become a hobby for the wealthy
Ordinary people will just get around in self-driving EVs (robotaxis)

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Legally, Japan’s self-driving efforts are still at the stage of limited “Level 4” pilot operations in designated areas, and haven’t reached nationwide rollout. Behind this lies not just road conditions—narrow alleys and complicated intersections are common—but also the fact that legislation clarifying liability in the event of an accident is still a work in progress. What divided the thread wasn’t so much the technology’s practicality as differing attitudes toward how much risk to tolerate: several posters pointed out that the US and China keep pushing self-driving development forward even when accidents occur, while Japan tends to demand zero risk. Separately, the “digital deficit” refers to the situation in which what Japanese companies pay for US-based cloud and IT services exceeds what they earn domestically—a structural problem often cited not just for self-driving but for AI-related services in general. As for whether Hiroyuki’s comment itself holds up, a fair number of posters questioned whether it had any real expert backing, and the thread’s split between agreeing with the content and judging the speaker himself is a nuance that doesn’t come through from the quoted article alone.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary of the 5channel (Geinosuposoku+) thread “Hiroyuki shares his take on Japan’s stalled self-driving rollout: “Unfortunately, in five or ten years…” “At this rate, we’re just going to get eaten alive by America.”“

  • “I Have Zero Self-Confidence,” Poster Confesses — 5ch Replies: “Just Being Alive Is a Win”

A poster believed to be a university student wrote on 5ch about struggling with a total lack of self-confidence. Saying they’ve never been able to believe in themselves since the sixth grade, and that nothing has changed now that they’re in college, the poster drew a mixed response from the board. Some were blunt, saying “That’s because you never put in any effort,” while others offered encouragement and advice like “Just being alive is a win” and “Your abilities look different depending on where you are.” The thread’s central debate became whether the lack of confidence stems from a lack of effort, or from the poster’s own traits and circumstances.

So I've basically had no confidence since around that time. I guess I'm used to it by now — if anything, I get anxious when I'm not feeling insecure and pessimistic.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The thread included a reference to the statistic that “1 in 7 people fall into the borderline intellectual functioning range,” but it’s worth noting that the poster never mentioned receiving any medical diagnosis — this figure was raised purely as speculation on an anonymous forum. As illustrated by the example of Sota Fujii, there were also points made that how ability is judged can shift depending on one’s environment, suggesting this issue can’t be neatly resolved into a simple binary of “laziness” versus “personal traits.” Note that replies amounting to direct abuse aimed at the poster or at specific disabilities or attributes have been excluded from this article.

  • JR’s Suica Mascot Vote: The Two ‘Backup’ Designs Get a Lukewarm Reception

A vote to choose a new mascot to replace the penguin familiar from Suica ticket gates and ads has been making waves online. There were three candidate designs — A, B, and C — and posters on 5ch (a major Japanese forum) increasingly suspected the poll was rigged to push voters toward Option A, while the other two drew comments like “not that great” and “just keep the penguin.” The current penguin is an illustrator’s original character that had already appeared in picture books, and rumor has it the high licensing fees are the real reason for the switch. Some posters even posted their own AI-generated mascot designs as alternatives, and the thread also lit up with comparisons to other companies’ mascots.

JR ran a public naming poll for that station.
    Results:
    1st: "Takanawa" — 8,398 votes
    2nd: "Shibaura" — 4,265 votes
    3rd: "Shibahama" — 3,497 votes
    4th (tie): "Shin-Shinagawa" and "Sengakuji"

And after "weighing various circumstances," they ended up with… "Takanawa Gateway."

    Re: #115
The penguin's high salary is the sticking point, apparently…

Background and key points of this discussion

The current Suica penguin is an original character created by illustrator Chiharu Sakazaki, who had already featured it in picture books before it became the Suica mascot — a backstory that fueled the recurring theory in the thread that JR is dropping it over licensing costs. JR East has also been in the news over cost-cutting moves like reviewing unprofitable rail lines, which lends the cost-reduction theory some plausibility, though it’s worth noting JR has not officially confirmed this as the reason. Opinions in the thread split over whether Option A, treated as the presumed “favorite” among the three candidates, was actually the best of the bunch — Options B and C each had their own share of supporters. Posters also invoked the saga of the public naming poll for Takanawa Gateway Station (a real case where the top vote-getter wasn’t the name ultimately chosen) as a reference point, voicing skepticism that this vote too might just be for show with the results ignored — a context worth keeping in mind when weighing how much this poll will actually matter.

  • Science Council Calls for Calculator Use in Math Education — 5ch Reacts: “Kids Won’t Build Real Math Skills”

On September 4, the Science Council of Japan released a statement calling for the active use of calculators and spreadsheet software in arithmetic and mathematics education, aimed at the next Courses of Study guidelines. The idea is to hand off calculations and graph-drawing that become cumbersome by hand to digital tools, freeing up time for students to analyze numerical relationships and interpret results; the proposal also includes splitting test questions on national achievement tests and regular exams into those testing basic calculation and those permitting calculator use. On 5ch, cautious voices — “relying on calculators means kids never build real math skills,” “writing by hand is what makes it stick in memory” — clashed with supportive ones — “it’s reasonable if the basics are finished by 5th grade before moving on to calculators and Excel” — and the pros and cons of abacus (soroban) education also became a hot topic.

On the 4th, the Science Council of Japan released a statement calling for the active use of calculators and spreadsheet software, among other tools, in arithmetic and mathematics education, aimed at the next Courses of Study guidelines. It called for handing off calculations and other tasks that become cumbersome by hand to digital tools, in order to enrich learning that involves exploring numerical relationships and analyzing and interpreting results.

It stated that, in order to advance the use of digital technology, the format of tests also needs to be reconsidered. For national achievement/learning surveys and regular exams, it proposed separating questions that test basic calculation skills from those that involve consideration and judgment using calculators and similar tools, with the latter permitting their use depending on the purpose. Evaluation would focus on grasping numerical relationships, interpreting representations, examining results, and choosing strategies.

In its recommendations for the next Courses of Study guidelines, it called for actively incorporating calculators, spreadsheet software, and math apps into middle and high school mathematics. By leaving calculation and graph-drawing to digital tools, it said, time can be secured for tackling prediction and verification and for connecting multiple forms of representation. Mastery of basic calculation skills will continue to be emphasized.

When classes switched to tablets, academic performance dropped sharply.
Once paper was pushed out in favor of digital, kids just used the tablets for entertainment during class and stopped paying attention.

With paper, simply turning a page easily connects the shape of the letters to memories of having written them before.
With digital, you're swiping around, there's other stuff in the UI, there are buttons — it's distracting, so it doesn't link up with memory as well.
Bottom line: you need to physically write characters by hand at least once to carve them into your brain's memory.

I knew a kid at soroban grade 10 who could do 8-digit mental math just by eye in under 2 seconds.
Honestly, maybe fully reviving abacus classes would be the better move.

Correction: that was a kid at soroban grade 1 (the advanced level, not grade 10).

Way too many people here haven't actually read Re: #1 properly.

    > By leaving calculation and graph-drawing to digital tools, it said, time can be secured for tackling prediction and verification and for connecting multiple forms of representation.

    > It pointed out that, internationally, Japanese students have relatively little experience using digital technology to mathematically explore, judge, and express ideas. In PISA 2022, experience using spreadsheet and programming software fell below the OECD average.

Does drawing shapes/figures even count as a "calculation skill"?

That's something to tackle once you're majoring in math at university (or if you're a high schooler or middle schooler who's into math as a hobby).

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Science Council of Japan’s statement looks ahead to the next Courses of Study guidelines and includes a concrete proposal to split test questions into ones assessing “basic calculation skills” and ones assessing “consideration and judgment using calculators.” As some in the thread noted, the backdrop includes findings from PISA 2022 showing that Japanese students’ experience using spreadsheet and programming software fell below the OECD average — this forms part of the basis for the recommendation to expand digital use. A point readers can easily get wrong is that this statement does not call for scrapping instruction in hand calculation itself; the original text explicitly states that “continued emphasis will be placed on mastering basic calculation skills.” Opinion in the thread split sharply, roughly dividing into a camp worried that heavy reliance on calculators and tablets will erode calculation ability and memory, and a more moderate camp that felt it would be fine as long as it’s paired with abacus training and paper. There was also some discussion touching on the Science Council’s organizational management and political leanings, but that’s a separate matter from the education proposal itself and isn’t covered in this article.
