The story
Square Enix has announced that its new Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon title will launch across every major platform — Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, iOS, Android, and Google Play Games on PC. It’s already live early on Google Play for 3,500 yen. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, discussion covered reactions to the price as well as surprise that the Dragon Quest family of titles, long tilted toward PlayStation, is now rolling out to every platform including Xbox — sparking debate over Square Enix’s past platform strategy.
What people said
Touchscreen controls are always a pain — gotta go with Switch handheld mode.
The mainline games and similar titles have had touch-control versions plenty of times before, and honestly the controls are rough — I know from experience.
Diagonal movement and diagonal bow shots especially.

Made me think it wasn't coming to Steam.
Isn't it supposed to go live right after the Direct ends?
I played Shiren 6 on mobile too, and honestly phone + Mystery Dungeon is perfect for killing time.
It's a remaster of the first game, so I figured it'd be around 2,000 yen.
And having Steam-exclusive content feels kind of off too…
Exactly this.
I can only assume someone was blocking it before.
A few years back, a title like this would've absolutely been snubbed.
That's just Spike Chunsoft sitting on old obligations and not bothering to expand the Shiren series' reach — Square Enix itself puts stuff out everywhere except the titles tied to Kawazu.
Well, nobody actually thinks Square Enix did a full 180 overnight — the people and the company haven't fundamentally changed. And when it's an outsourced game, they can say whatever they want about it.
If anything, Dragon Quest has mostly had Switch timed exclusives, no? lol
it's way too clunky as-is, so make it a remake.
Feel that.
Yangus is the one that really needs a remaster.
Yeah, the input response is bad.
They did stuff like Dragon Quest X offline and PS-exclusive bonuses, and when Builders and Heroes tied into the 11 anniversary campaign as PS4 promo, all Nintendo got was Monster Joker 3.
They timed-exclusived 11 S, Treasures, and Monsters too — you really think that balances out as 'just promotion'? lol
11 S came out later anyway, and it was this weird release where an unplanned PC version somehow shipped first, plus it got delayed over and over because of Horii's 'grown-up circumstances,' to the point they held a whole event just to announce the release date.
And Treasures is obviously built off recycled mobile-game assets lol
Square Enix has openly said it releases games specifically to promote PlayStation — Nomura himself said FF's reveal came too early for promotional reasons, and there were in-store POPs saying 'Only on PlayStation can you play the latest FF and DQ together!' The whole run-up to DQ11's release was rough too, honestly: Nintendo had been the one promoting Dragon Quest overseas even though it doesn't sell well abroad, and Square Enix basically kicked them while they were down — making it a de facto exclusive on a PS4 that wasn't even selling well yet, with the 3DS version treated as just a safety net, no overseas release, and no say for Nintendo. Though in the end the 3DS version actually lost to the PS4 version.
There's an agreement with [composer] Koichi Sugiyama's estate that fanfare-type tracks can't be cut off partway through.
Like in Dragon Quest, when a monster joins your party, or when you hit a jackpot on a slot — you can never skip those, right?
Was that in 2, maybe? Brings back memories.
Isn't that up to the individual?
On Steam you can just buy it, try it, and refund it if it's garbage —
and if you're even a modestly popular streamer it pays for itself easily.
Not many people know this, but there were about three released back in the feature-phone era.
Background and Talking Points
Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon is part of the Mystery Dungeon series, and Square Enix has a history of rolling out Dragon Quest-related titles heavily favoring PlayStation in recent years. The simultaneous announcement across all platforms this time, including Xbox Series X|S, drew surprised reactions on the thread, with some saying ‘a few years ago this would’ve been snubbed.’ Later in the discussion, posters brought up past cases like the Switch version of Dragon Quest XI S and Treasures being timed exclusives on Nintendo platforms, and opinions were divided on how much Square Enix’s platform strategy has actually shifted away from its PlayStation focus. It’s worth noting, though, that this remains speculation among users — Square Enix has not officially confirmed any change in policy. On pricing, opinions split between those who feel 3,500 yen is steep for a remaster and those waiting for a sale.
