  • Mexican Couple: ‘Japan Should Be More Vegetarian-Friendly’ — 5ch Fires Back: ‘It’s a Dashi Culture, Man’

A Mexican couple, Betty and Joel, visited Japan for a 12-day honeymoon and told news outlets they struggled to find gluten-free food — and their comments became a hot topic on the 5ch forum. Some posters pointed out that since Japanese cuisine is built around dashi (soup stock) and rice, there are still options if you just avoid wheat, while others said it’s understandable that dedicated vegetarian or vegan menus remain scarce. The thread was dominated by a clash between the “when in Rome” crowd and those arguing that if Japan wants to profit from inbound tourism, it should accommodate foreign visitors’ dietary needs.

    ○ “I felt Japan wasn’t as developed as I expected” — Mexican couple baffled: what was it they “struggled to find”?

Betty and Joel came all the way from Mexico. The couple visited Japan on their honeymoon and stayed for 12 days. They too apparently found themselves puzzled when it came to meals.

Why are foreigners so demanding? When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Normally you'd travel with the mindset of being grateful for the privilege of visiting, right?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Gluten-free and vegetarian are technically separate dietary restrictions, but the thread largely conflated the two. In practice, Japanese home cooking and restaurant food often use wheat in soy sauce and noodles, and even dishes that look vegetable-based frequently rely on dashi made from bonito flakes or dried sardines — meaning the options are narrower than they appear for anyone avoiding meat or fish. In recent years some restaurants have begun offering gluten-free or vegan options, but posters noted that many have shut down due to low customer numbers, making the balance between inbound demand and the cost of accommodating it a real practical hurdle. The thread saw a persistent split between a self-responsibility camp (“you should research before visiting”) and those arguing that a country branding itself as a tourism destination should meet visitors halfway — a debate that resisted any simple right-or-wrong conclusion.

  • 10 Years of Governor Koike: ¥15 Trillion on Child-Rearing Support — 5ch Reacts: ‘You’re Poaching People from Other Prefectures, So Pay Up’

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike has marked 10 years in office. She has rolled out one childbirth and child-rearing support policy after another, and in June it was announced that Tokyo’s birth rate had risen for the first time in a decade. The generous benefits and free services made possible by the capital’s abundant tax revenue are envied by other prefectures, but there’s also persistent backlash over the idea that “only Tokyo benefits.” On 5ch, users debated the issue from multiple angles — the fairness of how the support is funded, concerns that budgets keep swelling without any real scrutiny of what the programs actually deliver, and the growing gap between child-rearing households concentrated in central Tokyo and low-income singles.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike marked 10 years in office this past August. She has continued to roll out one childbirth and child-rearing policy after another, but the benefits and free services funded by the capital’s abundant tax revenue have also drawn criticism and skepticism from governors and residents of other prefectures. We take a look at where Governor Koike’s administration stands today.

“I believe this is a result of our policies. I want to keep building on this seamlessly, so that it continues to resonate with Tokyo residents in various ways,” she said.

On June 3, when it was announced that Tokyo’s birth count had risen for the first time in a decade, Koike spoke to reporters with evident pride.

    Re: #197
Child-rearing support is basically designed to reduce the burden on parents, so I think a BBQ is fine too
even the child allowance itself is paid out to the parents anyway

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Tokyo is one of the few local governments that doesn’t receive local allocation tax grants, making it one of the rare municipalities able to fund child-rearing support entirely out of its own tax revenue. This gap in fiscal strength makes the disparity with other prefectures highly visible, feeding a structural backlash of “it’s not fair that only Tokyo gets this.” Within the thread, opinions split between those questioning the fairness of it and those who argued it’s only natural for Tokyo to spend the tax revenue it earns. Another recurring point was transparency in how the funds are used — commenters repeatedly raised concerns that, under the banner of “child-rearing support,” budgets keep growing without the substance of the programs ever being properly scrutinized. At the same time, central Tokyo is also grappling with its own polarization, between an influx of child-rearing households and a population of low-income singles, and the original Mainichi Shimbun article this piece is based on doesn’t dig deeply into which groups are actually benefiting from the support. It’s worth noting that a simple argument about redistributing tax revenue isn’t, on its own, a meaningful measure of Tokyo’s over-concentration or of how effective birthrate policy is overall.

  • ‘FF7 Revelation’ Breaks the Scale at 300GB — Disc Version Will Require a Mandatory Download, Square Enix’s Hamaguchi Explains

Naoki Hamaguchi, director of FINAL FANTASY VII Revelation, explained to IGN why the PS5 and Xbox physical versions will require a download. According to him, the game’s total size reaches 300GB — too much to fit even on two discs — so the plan is to put the main game on a single disc (roughly 100GB) and cover the remaining ~200GB with a mandatory download. Hamaguchi also noted on his own X account that, given each platform’s limits on package capacity, he wanted to avoid compromising the quality of this final installment just to cram it onto physical discs. The thread was split on whether the quality gap with the Switch 2 version — officially listed at around 130GB — and this whole decision actually make sense.

Once you're freed from discs, you can kiss all this annoying back-and-forth goodbye too

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The optical discs used by the PS5 are capped at roughly 100GB per disc (single-sided, triple-layer), so fitting 300GB of data onto one or two discs is technically difficult. The “disc plus mandatory download” approach itself isn’t unusual for large-scale titles in recent years, and doesn’t necessarily mean corners were cut. Where the thread split was over how this size gap connects to past criticism of the Switch 2 version’s visual quality: some read it as meaning that if the PS5 version was built at 300GB “without compromise,” the smaller Switch 2 version must have been proportionally simplified, while others pointed out that judging visual quality or polish from file size alone is premature. The fact that even the disc version still requires a mandatory download is also raising questions about what the point of choosing physical media even is anymore.

  • No New Mario on Switch 2? ‘They’re Just Stretching the Console’s Lifespan,’ Critic Claims — Fans Split

In a Yahoo! News expert column, Narihiro Kawamura pointed out that “Nintendo’s decision not to release a mainline Mario game, a new Smash Bros., or a new Animal Crossing on the Switch 2 might be a deliberate move to extend the console’s lifespan.” “Mario Kart World” carried the Switch 2’s launch, and the next major title is expected to be a new Pokémon game slated for 2027, with titles like “Donkey Kong Bananza” filling the gap in between. This view sparked debate on 5ch’s console-wars board, with pushback arguing that big titles simply take years to develop, mixed with complaints that owners aren’t feeling motivated to upgrade from their original Switch.

    Expert’s supplementary commentary

“Mario Kart World” drove the Switch 2’s launch, and in 2027 the latest entry in the “Pokémon” series, “Wind & Wave,” is scheduled for release. There’s a marquee title, but fans are probably thinking, “what else is there?” One reason people buy a Nintendo console in the first place is for Nintendo’s own blockbuster titles.

So far, titles like “Donkey Kong,” “Kirby,” and “Metroid” have been rolled out. These are all popular franchises, and there’s likely also an aim to grow them further into even bigger pillars for the platform.

    Switch 2's launch titles

    2027 movie

'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' trailer broke GTA 6's record in 12 hours, passed 500 million views

    Background and points of debate

The Switch 2 launched in 2025, with “Mario Kart World” as its launch-tier title, followed by “Donkey Kong Bananza,” “Kirby,” and “Metroid.” There’s been no announcement yet of successors to Nintendo’s flagship franchises — a mainline 3D Mario, a new Smash Bros., or a new Animal Crossing — with the next major title expected to be a new Pokémon game in 2027. In past hardware transitions, the standard playbook was to lead with a steady stream of first-party blockbusters, but the Switch 2’s strength lies in backward compatibility that lets players carry over their Switch software library as-is, meaning there’s structurally less pressure than before to rush out a “must-upgrade” flagship title. Where the thread split was over whether to view this apparent holding-back as a deliberate life-extension strategy, or simply the natural result of blockbuster titles taking years to develop. Opinions were also divided on whether the success of Bananza and Mario Kart counts as a commercial win, or whether they fall short as substitutes for a mainline Mario game.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Console Wars)) thread “Narihiro Kawamura: ‘Nintendo isn’t releasing Mario, Smash, or Animal Crossing on the Switch 2 because they want to extend the hardware’s lifespan’“

  • Tokyo Metro Bus Driver Caught Tailgating, Yelled ‘You Idiot!’ on Dashcam — License Revoked

It has emerged that a driver for the Tokyo Metropolitan Bus service was referred to prosecutors last October on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (obstructive driving/tailgating) after aggressively tailgating a private vehicle while operating an out-of-service bus. The dashcam also recorded the driver shouting “You idiot!” The case was reported as unusual, since it’s rare for a public transit driver to face charges over aggressive driving that could lead to a serious accident. On 5ch, discussion ranged widely — from speculation about the driver’s employment status and the bus system’s operating structure, to how dashcam footage is handled, and on to the working conditions of route bus drivers and the reality of trouble with passengers.

It has been learned, through reporting to the Metropolitan Police Department and other sources, that a driver for the Tokyo Metropolitan Bus service was referred to prosecutors this past autumn on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (obstructive driving) after tailgating a private vehicle while driving an out-of-service bus. With tailgating that can lead to serious accidents now subject to tougher penalties, it is said to be unusual for a public transit driver to be charged. (By Ayana Ebisuno)

◆ Industry group: “Never heard of a case like this anywhere in the country”

According to Komagome Police Station, the man referred to prosecutors was a Tokyo Metropolitan Bus driver in his 30s at the time. Last October, while driving an out-of-service bus between Shinobazu-dori and JR Komagome Station in Tokyo’s Bunkyo Ward, he is alleged to have committed violations such as unnecessarily honking his horn and flashing his headlights at a private vehicle. The dashcam recorded the driver’s voice shouting “You idiot!” The case came to light after a 110 emergency call, believed to be from the victim who was tailgated.

I see plenty who really shouldn't have been given a license in the first place.
Most of them tend to be older, but surprisingly some young ones too.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Aggressive tailgating (the offense of “obstructive driving”) is a relatively new violation category, created under the 2020 revision of the Road Traffic Act, and it carries harsher administrative penalties and criminal punishment than ordinary traffic violations. What made this case “unusual” is that the offender was a public transit driver — the industry association says it isn’t aware of any comparable case being prosecuted before. Where opinions in the thread diverged was mainly over whether the driver was a city employee or worked for a subcontracted company; the article itself doesn’t specify this, so it remains pure speculation on 5ch. Comments claiming there’s “an arrangement with the labor union not to review dashcam footage” are likewise unverified personal opinion and shouldn’t be taken as fact. That said, it’s worth noting how the discussion expanded beyond this single incident into structural issues facing the industry — staff shortages on bus routes, customer harassment, and pressure to keep to schedule.

  • New ‘Wolverine’ Game Gets Slammed with 60s from Major Reviewers — 5ch: ‘That’s a 78 EVEN WITH the Score Manipulation’

Insomniac Games’ new title *Marvel’s Wolverine* has launched with a Metacritic score of 78. But look at the breakdown: major outlets like IGN and VGC all gave it low scores around 60, while an obscure site’s perfect 100 score dragged the average up. This gap became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, where posters piled on with specific complaints — pointless QTE sequences, glitchy character models, and more.

If it were just IGN scoring it low, sure, but ALL the major outlets are low 🥺

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

*Marvel’s Wolverine* is an action game developed by Insomniac Games. A Metacritic score is an average of scores from multiple outlets, so the overall impression can shift a lot depending on the breakdown — and that’s exactly what happened here. Major outlets like IGN and VGC scored it around 60, while a high score from an obscure site appears to have pulled the average up, and that gap is what fueled speculation of ‘score manipulation.’ That said, no one in the thread actually presented evidence of manipulation — it remains pure speculation on 5ch’s part, so that should be kept in mind. The claim that the QTEs (quick time events) don’t respond to button input traces back to a social media post, and posters cited it as one more data point on the game’s overall polish. AAA titles are generally expected to land around 80 on Metacritic, so a score in the 60s counts as a relatively harsh verdict — which is likely what drove the reaction in the thread.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Wolverine’s Metacritic Is 78, But Every Major Outlet Rated It Super Low 🤣www“.

  • AI Developer’s Warning: ‘Humanity Will Be Wiped Out’ Sparks Debate on 5ch

A thread went up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo board over the news that an AI developer had said, “AI is dangerous, and at this rate humanity could be wiped out,” sparking a lively discussion. The backdrop included a case where an AI company had its own AI search for vulnerabilities, only for the resulting information to leak and get used in actual hacking, as well as references to an experiment Anthropic published in which AI agents got into “turf wars” with each other and sabotaged one another using malware. The thread showed a wide range in how seriously people took the threat — from fears about critical infrastructure like nuclear systems, power plants, and banking systems being hijacked, to the optimistic view that you could just unplug it to stop it, to cooler-headed takes dismissing it all as needless worry unless true general AI actually emerges.

Digital security basically becomes meaningless at that point
What are they even gonna do about it?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The idea that AI poses a threat isn’t new — researchers themselves have long referred to “extinction-level risk” from AI. What split opinion in the thread was a clash between two views: one holding that current AI is nothing more than “a mechanism for predicting the next word” and remains far from true general AI (AGI), and the other pointing to signs of real-world harm already emerging, such as leaked data from an AI tasked with hunting vulnerabilities and AI agents sabotaging each other with malware. One commonly misunderstood point is that even developers themselves haven’t fully figured out why AI evolved from simple fill-in-the-blank processing into far more complex behavior — meaning the risk isn’t just a simple story of good versus evil, but stems from the technology’s own opacity.

  • Third-Party Games Flock to Switch 2 — 5ch: “Not Since the Super Famicom”

The fact that major third-party publishers like FromSoftware and Capcom are lining up to release their latest titles on Nintendo’s Switch 2 became a hot topic on 5ch’s gaming hardware (Geha) board. Some posters commented that “this is the first time third parties have flocked to a Nintendo console since the Super Famicom era,” while others recalled how publishers once fled to the PlayStation camp to avoid Nintendo’s steep licensing fees. As the thread went on, it turned into a heated debate over port quality (the so-called “downgraded versions”) and actual sales figures for popular titles like Elden Ring, eventually spiraling into a broader argument about the different user bases of Switch 2, PS5, and PC.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

As mentioned in the thread itself, third parties are believed to have historically avoided Nintendo hardware due to the burden of steep licensing fees. This time, the early involvement of CD Projekt Red, FromSoftware, and Capcom appears to have changed the trend, with preferential treatment like the commemorative Pro Controller 2 for FromSoftware serving as evidence of that shift. Meanwhile, specific figures such as “Elden Ring sold 20.5 million copies on Steam versus just 30,000 on Switch 2” circulated in the thread, but it should be noted that these are individual posters’ claims, not officially tallied or announced sales figures. The discussion split into two main points of contention: first, whether the rise in third-party support should be seen as a sign of Nintendo hardware’s growing strength, or simply as an additional porting destination; second, the quality of ports (the so-called “downgraded versions”) and the merits of moving away from physical discs — a push led by other platforms — which brought the usual platform rivalries along with it.

  • NY Yen Hits ¥154.36, Driven by BOJ Officials’ Remarks and Hotter US PPI

In New York foreign exchange trading on the 10th, the yen weakened 88 sen from the previous day to trade at 154.36–46 yen per dollar. On 5ch’s “Breaking News+” board, posters pointed to a string of hawkish-sounding remarks from Bank of Japan officials — Policy Board member Hajime Takata, Finance Minister Katayama, and Policy Board member Kazuyuki Masu — as the driver behind yen buying, while expectations of a Fed rate hike also grew on views that US PPI (Producer Price Index) data would come in hotter than expected, and crude oil hit a four-month high, making for a tangle of competing factors. Just two days earlier, the board had been buzzing about the yen nearing the 150 mark, so some were surprised the move even counted as “breaking news” at this level, while others predicted the BOJ would hike rates three times in a row — opinions split on whether the yen would keep weakening or reverse into strength.

20 trillion yen spent just to make the rich even richer — it's a money game, I can't stop laughing. All FX trading does is turn the rich into the ultra-rich. Ordinary Japanese citizens are just fertilizer for a handful of wealthy people. Beyond that, we're just machines for paying taxes. Keep working for the rich, everyone. And politicians get to sit up high enjoying the show as prices keep climbing and everyone suffers.

That confident, huh? Must be a time traveler. Screenshotting this for later! (a 5ch meme: saving a bold prediction to mock the poster later if it's wrong)

Background and Key Points on This Story

A one-yen move in the exchange rate isn’t unusual in itself, but this time BOJ Policy Board member Hajime Takata was followed by Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and Policy Board member Kazuyuki Masu, all making remarks that could be read as leaning toward further rate hikes — fueling market speculation that the BOJ will push ahead with multiple additional hikes without worrying about pace. Meanwhile on the US side, expectations of a Fed rate hike are also in play following hotter-than-expected PPI data, so competing assumptions about monetary policy on both sides of the Pacific are keeping the exchange rate on edge. Since the thread had, just two days earlier, been buzzing about the yen nearing a break below 150, there was a noticeable gap in tone between posters surprised that 154 yen even counted as “breaking news” and those who saw it as still within ordinary yen-weakness territory. The thread also cited another discussion noting that retail investors’ short-yen positions have been swelling, with some warning of the risk of forced margin liquidations if the yen suddenly strengthens.

  • Wheat Sell-Off Price Jumps 12% — 5ch: “It’s Only Cheap Because of Tax Subsidies”

On the 9th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced that the government’s selling price for imported wheat, effective from October, will rise 12% compared to the April–September 2026 period, to ¥70,020 per ton (weighted average of five brands). The main drivers are said to be rising international prices and a weaker yen, and this could add pressure to raise prices on wheat-based foods like bread and noodles. On the thread, some pointed to the stalled Ukraine peace talks pushing up international prices, as well as the mechanism by which the government props up import wheat prices using tax money, while others linked it to the shift away from rice or noted that bread prices stayed flat during past price-cut phases — leaving reactions to the hike divided.

On the 9th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced that the government’s selling price for imported wheat from October will be ¥70,020 per ton (weighted average of five brands), a 12% increase from the April–September 2026 period.

    47AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:12
    Re: #10
"Retaliatory price hike"… imported wheat is only cheap because of government subsidies. If trading companies were just buying it outright, it'd never be anywhere near rice prices. Japan gets subsidies from the government for both oil and wheat — that's the only reason we can buy at today's prices. Cargo ships are also taking longer routes now. With fuel and labor costs both soaring, selling at the same old price just means the strain gets dumped somewhere else. Is that really okay?
    20AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:30
Guess that's the end of the road for rice-substitute demand. Might as well go back to rice.

    Re: #25
Wrong. Prices rose because it's looking more likely the Ukraine-Russia peace talks will hit a dead end. On top of that, some idiot (Japan) showed up to buy while deliberately tanking their own currency, so of course they got charged a premium. China, after all, is happily buying up huge quantities. When someone with no money shows up, of course they get taken for a ride.
    33AnonymousSep 11, 2026 03:47
The price spiked to ¥76,000 back in 2022, then gradually dropped about 20% over recent years, and now it's just ticked up a bit from that low. Retailers already jacked up product prices plenty when it hit its peak, and never lowered them even when the government selling price came back down — but the second it ticks up slightly, it's an instant price hike?

Wheat products are cheap only because the government keeps dumping tax money into imported wheat to suppress the price. Also, American rice has already jumped 60% this year alone and is set to spike even further. Saying "just import our staple food then" is beyond stupid.

    Re: #202
So scrapping the tariffs should be fine then, right?

Background and Key Points of This Story

Imported wheat isn’t bought by private trading companies but purchased in bulk by the government, under a “state trading” system that revises the government selling price twice a year (April and October) to reflect recent international prices and exchange rates. This is a holdover from the postwar food control system, meant to supply the domestic milling and baking industries with wheat at stable prices. This time’s 12% increase results from international prices staying elevated amid uncertainty over the situation in Ukraine, combined with a weaker yen — it isn’t simply a matter of tight supply and demand. It’s also worth noting that a higher selling price doesn’t necessarily translate into an equivalent rise in retail prices — in fact, there have been past cases where retail prices for bread and similar goods stayed flat even as the selling price dropped — and it’s easy to overlook that cost structures involve factors beyond wheat itself, like labor and logistics costs.
