The story
The fact that major third-party publishers like FromSoftware and Capcom are lining up to release their latest titles on Nintendo’s Switch 2 became a hot topic on 5ch’s gaming hardware (Geha) board. Some posters commented that “this is the first time third parties have flocked to a Nintendo console since the Super Famicom era,” while others recalled how publishers once fled to the PlayStation camp to avoid Nintendo’s steep licensing fees. As the thread went on, it turned into a heated debate over port quality (the so-called “downgraded versions”) and actual sales figures for popular titles like Elden Ring, eventually spiraling into a broader argument about the different user bases of Switch 2, PS5, and PC.
What people said
My understanding is that this is the first time third parties have flocked to a Nintendo console since the Super Famicom era.
And here everyone fled to PlayStation because they hated paying those ridiculous licensing margins.
There's an anti-PS guy here too. For users it's really just a choice between Switch or PC.
That's just how it is on Geha (the hardcore gaming board). Normal people aren't primarily into gaming, so they only use Switch.
Most users just pick PC, don't they? Third-party titles on Switch 2 aren't selling at all.
As long as first-party titles are selling, there's no problem.
Ah, so everyone can just stick to their lane then
Switch 2 if you want Nintendo games
PC if you want PC games
Wait, what about PS5?
it's basically like third parties no longer need to kiss up to Sony (derogatory nickname: "Chony")
Capcom, Square Enix, Atlus, FromSoftware
building games with Switch 2 as the base model is clearly the safe bet now.
There's no way third parties would base their development around low-spec hardware like Switch 2, lol.
Then FromSoftware announced a partnership before Switch 2 even launched
After launch, Capcom started putting out day-one simultaneous releases for its new titles
That's probably why third parties are flocking to a Nintendo console this time
I think Nintendo should give these three companies special treatment
and it already does, for FromSoftware at least.
Alright, we'll make another remake then.
Hell yeah
Give us more 2D Zelda games like A Link to the Past / A Link Between Worlds
And probably a given at this point, but Majora's Mask too.
Nintendo, make remakes of the Game Boy Card Hero and Custom Robo already.
This crowd values anime-style games way more than photorealistic, hardware-pushing ones
no wonder they're jealous of Xenoblade Genesis.
There's no way Switch 2 dominates alone
JRPGs barely sell on Switch 2, and when they do come out, they're downgraded ports anyway.
Oh, are you that same guy from before? You sound like you're struggling…
What am I struggling with?
JRPGs on Switch 2 are flopping miserably, and since it's low-spec, they end up as downgraded ports
Elden Ring, Persona 3 Reload, FF7 Remake — all got ported and all bombed like garbage.
If you don't want games coming to Switch 2, go blame PS5
this is all its fault.
have you already forgotten which sold better, the Switch version or the PS5 version?
Trails in the Sky wasn't a big seller to begin with anyway
And look at Elden Ring — the Steam version sold 20.5 million copies while the Switch 2 version bombed miserably at just 30,000.
Cherry-picking the wins doesn't get you anywhere
The reality is they're ditching discs.
Ordinary people use PC
Compared to PC, Switch 2's market size and install base are basically nothing.
The correct take is both are selling — there's just a difference in the installed base.
Since they're totally different, people say if you want everything, you just need both a Switch and a PC
But PS5 and PC are supposed to have the same user base
Hardcore PC gamers don't touch PS5
I get why that creates conflict, but there's no reason for hardcore PC gamers to be hostile toward the Nintendo camp.
I don't mean to be hostile toward Nintendo, but it's annoying when people who don't even know games keep bringing up Nintendo games for everything.
Ditching discs is a good thing
What, are you against it?
If that's such a good thing, why is everyone overseas saying "NO DISC NO BUY"?
Cherry-picking the wins doesn't get you anywhere
The reality is they're ditching discs.
Ditching discs doesn't matter to me at all
I play on PC, so I never used discs anyway.
Are we talking about titles that never sold well, or about multiplatform sales comparisons? Pick one before you start replying to people…
It's about which sold better in multiplatform releases
If Switch 2 were really dominant, it wouldn't be getting crushed in sales for games like Elden Ring, right?
And on top of that, Switch 2's specs are so bad the ports come out downgraded.
If we're talking about multiplatform sales comparisons, that obviously includes simultaneous-release match-ups
but your comeback was just the nonsensical "that series never sold well to begin with."
You used to say these games would never even come to Switch, and now that you can't say that anymore, you've retreated to whining about downgrades. Lol.
dual screens and motion remotes were gimmicks nobody needed
Waving a remote around doesn't make a game fun
Nintendo was wrong, so it was only a matter of time before it started copying Sony's playbook
Though without GTA6, none of this even matters, lol.
True, the "gimmicks" (lol) are gone now
oh wait, there's still that one thing
the mouse (lol).
The smugness from someone who's clearly never even played it (an "airplay" poser, i.e. all talk, no actual gameplay)
And of course they're obsessed with GTA6, typical.
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
As mentioned in the thread itself, third parties are believed to have historically avoided Nintendo hardware due to the burden of steep licensing fees. This time, the early involvement of CD Projekt Red, FromSoftware, and Capcom appears to have changed the trend, with preferential treatment like the commemorative Pro Controller 2 for FromSoftware serving as evidence of that shift. Meanwhile, specific figures such as “Elden Ring sold 20.5 million copies on Steam versus just 30,000 on Switch 2” circulated in the thread, but it should be noted that these are individual posters’ claims, not officially tallied or announced sales figures. The discussion split into two main points of contention: first, whether the rise in third-party support should be seen as a sign of Nintendo hardware’s growing strength, or simply as an additional porting destination; second, the quality of ports (the so-called “downgraded versions”) and the merits of moving away from physical discs — a push led by other platforms — which brought the usual platform rivalries along with it.
