  • Nikkei Plunges as Much as ¥1,600 as Oil Prices Surge — 5ch: “Don’t Look at the Points, Look at the Percentage”

On the 11th, the Nikkei Stock Average opened lower on the Tokyo exchange, falling by more than 1,600 yen at one point. The drop came against a backdrop of surging New York crude oil futures — driven by expectations that tensions in the Middle East will remain elevated for a long time — and a broad decline across major U.S. stock indexes in the previous day’s trading. On 5ch discussion threads, reactions were split: some voiced alarm at the size of the point drop, while others took a calmer view, noting that “in percentage terms it’s only about 2.3%” or that “it just brought us back to where we were a month ago.” The discussion also touched on how the drop might affect the Bank of Japan’s interest rate decision, as well as concerns among individual investors dollar-cost averaging into mutual funds through NISA about their paper gains.

The Nikkei Stock Average opened lower on the Tokyo exchange on the 11th, falling in early trading. The opening price was 64,276.82, down 994.13 yen from the previous day’s close. New York crude oil futures surged on the view that tensions in the Middle East will remain high for an extended period, and on the 10th, major U.S. stock indexes all declined. Concerns spread that surging oil prices and rising interest rates could weigh on the economy and corporate earnings, and at one point the Nikkei’s decline exceeded 1,600 yen.

    Huh? Of course it's related.
What kind of idiot central bank hikes rates while the stock market's crashing and the market's in a panic, triggering a reverse wealth effect that chills consumption and drags the economy into the ground?
Just because their mandate is price stability doesn't mean they can ram through a rate hike while ignoring market chaos — anyone who thinks that's possible is way too naive.

    Background and Key Points

The Nikkei’s drop of more than 1,600 yen at one point was driven by surging New York crude oil futures amid expectations that Middle East tensions will remain elevated for the long term, and the resulting decline in U.S. stocks the previous day. Since higher oil prices translate directly into higher domestic prices and gasoline costs, the thread also touched on economic policy responses such as the government’s gasoline tax cut. Opinions were split on how to read the size of the drop: some reacted to the raw figure of 1,600 yen, while others pointed out that in percentage terms it’s only about 2.3%, and that the point drop looks larger simply because the Nikkei’s overall level is higher than it used to be. Individual investors dollar-cost averaging into mutual funds (like the “Orukan” All-Country fund) through NISA also voiced concern about their shrinking unrealized gains, reflecting the experience of those who started investing after the new NISA program launched. Note that views on the relationship between this drop and the Bank of Japan’s rate decision were split — some argued “rate hikes have nothing to do with stock prices,” others that “hiking rates during a stock slump would cool the economy” — so no market consensus had formed at the time this article was written.

  • Sweatpants as Streetwear? Generations Clash on 5ch Over the ‘Convenience Store Look’

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board heated up over whether wearing sweatpants and sweatshirts as everyday clothing is “uncool.” It started with comparisons to Heisei-era fashion, tracing how sweatsuit-style outfits spread over the past few years following the wide-leg pants boom of 2020–2021. Posters who seemed to be older argued things like “It’s ridiculous to ride the train dressed like you’re just popping into a convenience store,” while younger posters countered that “sweatpants are the mainstream look now,” with the argument dragging on into fine-grained disputes over color and fabric choices.

The whole concept of this fashion is going out dressed like you're in loungewear or dance-practice gear
Saying 'black doesn't look like loungewear' means you don't get the concept

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Sweatsuit sets and sweatpants have become a fixture of everyday fashion over the past several years, following the wide-leg pants boom of 2020–2021. One theory floated in the thread was that the trend was influenced by K-pop idols’ off-duty style, but that’s purely speculation from posters, not a verified fact. The debate split along whether sweats-as-streetwear should be seen as “basically loungewear” or as “a style that earned legitimacy through dance culture,” with opinions dividing further down to specifics like color (black versus light gray). What readers shouldn’t mistake this for is a statistical statement about “Reiwa-generation fashion sense” as a whole — it’s just an exchange of subjective opinions on an anonymous forum, and the generational mismatch over what counts as “uncool” is itself the classic shape of this kind of thread.

  • “PE Class Is Just Public Humiliation”: 5ch Debates Scrapping Gym Class — “Catering to the Kids Who Can’t Do It Screws Over the Kids Who Can”

An opinion that school PE class “is nothing but an hour of humiliation for kids who are bad at sports, and should be scrapped” went viral on 5ch. PE has long been a divisive subject — in activities like distance running and ball games, rankings and skill gaps are painfully visible, making it easy for less athletic students to develop an inferiority complex. In the thread, opinions supporting PE for its health and developmental benefits clashed head-on with those calling for scaling it back or showing more consideration due to the psychological toll, and the debate escalated into a broader question of principle: should the benefit of the majority take priority over the suffering of the minority?

That's basically most of Gen Z these days.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The debate over keeping or scrapping PE class is a recurring one, driven in part by the fact that national curriculum guidelines make “physical education” mandatory all the way through elementary, middle, and high school. The thread split over a single question: which matters more — the medical benefit that exercise provides to bone and muscle development during a child’s growth years, or the damage to self-esteem caused by having rankings and failures put on public display? One easy-to-miss point is that the abolition argument isn’t really “exercise itself is bad,” but an objection to the system of ranking and comparison — yet within the thread, “we don’t need exercise” and “we don’t need PE class” ended up getting conflated partway through, leaving posters talking past each other. A difference in values over whether an inferiority complex is something to overcome through effort, or something that shouldn’t be inflicted on kids in the first place, was also part of why the two sides never converged.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread ““For kids who can’t do sports, PE is nothing but the arrogant cruelty of humiliation, so it should be scrapped” — fair point.”

  • Juice=Juice Thread Overrun by Copypasta Spam — Fans Say ‘Now That the Wolf’s Broken, I’ve Lost Interest’

On 5ch’s Hello!Project board, nicknamed “the Wolf,” discussion kicked off in the Juice=Juice thread after a poster complained that copypasta spam had made the thread so heavy it wouldn’t load anymore. Some said that dodging the spam had left them out of the loop on the group’s recent activities, while others countered that the board was only ever used to get information from thread titles anyway, so the actual content didn’t matter. Some pointed out that setting NG (blocked) words would lighten the load and fix the spam problem, but opinions split between those who’d lost interest now that their only source of information had stopped functioning, and those who called that just plain apathy hiding behind the spam as an excuse.

In the end, the thread title is the one thing copypasta can't ruin — that's its limit.

    Background and Points of Debate

“The Wolf” is the nickname for 5ch’s Hello!Project board, where group-specific threads serve as the main hub fans use to exchange information. These threads have long been prime targets for “copypasta spam” — the repeated posting of identical content — which slows page loading and drives readers away. As mentioned in the discussion, dedicated browser apps like ChMate let users hide flagged posts by setting NG (blocked) words, easing the perceived slowdown, though the underlying spam posts themselves remain. What divided this thread was whether the loss of information should be blamed on the spam itself, or simply on the individual’s own waning interest — with the latter camp pointing out, somewhat paradoxically, that the very post being discussed did get a reaction out of people. There was also a side conversation about whether posters were more invested in Juice=Juice or Angerme, though this reflected differences in individual fans’ enthusiasm rather than any factual matter, and the thread reached no overall conclusion.

  • Streamer Washes His Hair in a Puddle During Torrential Rain, Ends Up with a Fever and Blood in His Urine — Urinalysis Finds ‘Numerous Bacteria’

Zokkun, a 52-year-old streamer active mainly on Kick, reported on X on September 10 that he’d fallen ill. During a stream conducted amid heavy rain from a linear precipitation band, he used the rain as a makeshift shower and, at the end, stuck his head into a puddle on the street. He was later hit with a 38°C fever and blood in his urine, and a hospital urinalysis reportedly detected “numerous bacteria.” On the 5ch Geinou/Sports News+ thread, reactions came from all angles — opinions split on whether the infection route was through the mouth and nose or something else, alongside debate over whether health insurance should cover it, and comparisons to another streamer who pulled a similarly reckless stunt in the same downpour.

Zokkun, a streamer active mainly on Kick, reported on X on September 10 that he’d fallen ill. He said doctors told him it was likely caused by exposure to contaminated water during a stream held amid heavy rain from a linear precipitation band, and he also shared images of his test results.

    Re: #140
If he dies trying to make a living off streaming, doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

During heavy rain from a linear precipitation band, sewers overflow, making it easy for bacteria from wastewater to mix into puddles on the road. However, urinary tract infections involving blood in the urine and fever typically occur when bacteria enter through the urethra, so it’s medically unclear how exposing just his head to dirty water led to these symptoms. The thread raised several theories — infection through the mucous membranes of the mouth or nose, infection via the eyes or a wound — but all of it remains speculation. Some also argued that insurance should cover 100% of the cost, but unless the act is officially ruled intentional self-harm, standard insured care generally still applies — worth noting that this isn’t a claim with real legal grounding. Zokkun belongs to “Kickers,” a group that keeps producing content too risky for stricter platforms like YouTube; understanding that Kick is their home base helps explain how this dangerous stream came about in the first place.

  • Junior High Freshman Runs 100m in the 10-Second Range After Switching from Soccer to Track — 13-Year-Old Phenom in Kurume, Fukuoka

News that a first-year junior high student in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture had run the 100m in the 10-second range — setting a national record for first-year junior high schoolers — sparked a wide-ranging discussion on 5channel’s entertainment/sports board (Geinou/Sports News+) about the young athlete’s future prospects. His switch from soccer to track drew plenty of praise, with posters calling the decision to spot his talent early “quick and admirable,” while others were more cautious, warning that “speed alone won’t pay the bills” and that “this country hypes up young athletes only to forget them once they hit 20.” Names like Usain Bolt, Shohei Ohtani, and a former sprinter who was once Japan’s top junior-high-schooler in the sprints all came up, fueling the perennial debate over whether baseball or soccer makes better use of natural athletic talent.

In Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, there’s a first-year junior high student who runs the 100m in the 10-second range. We dug into the secret behind this astonishing 13-year-old’s speed — and the person behind it — after he set the national record for first-year junior high students.

“There’s supposedly the fastest first-year junior high student in Japan in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture.”

Acting on that rumor, staff from the TV program “Asadesu. KBC” began investigating. After asking around, they got testimonies like “I saw him running at the athletics track” and “He’s seriously fast.”

The real problem is the "bukatsu" (school sports club) system that doesn't let you do more than one at a time.

Background and Talking Points on This Topic

Worth noting: “10-second range” (10秒台) means anywhere from 10.0 to 10.9 seconds, not the 9-second range — the excerpt alone doesn’t reveal his exact time. In Japanese junior high sports, it’s a recurring topic when track, baseball, and soccer end up competing for promising athletes, and the thread brought up a real example: a sprinter who was once Japan’s top junior-high 100m runner and later became a pro baseball player — cross-sport talent movement is a perennial 5ch topic. At the same time, some posters voiced a cynical take on Japan’s media environment, saying it “hypes up young athletes only to forget them once they’re past 20” — this mix of celebration and clear-eyed skepticism about the kid’s future is what defined the thread.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “First 10-Second 100m as a First-Year Junior High Student — The Face Behind the 13-Year-Old Who Switched from Soccer to Track — Kurume, Fukuoka.”

  • Torneko Remake Slammed by Scathing Review — 5ch Users: ‘The Controls Are Garbage’

A scathing review posted on Steam for Square Enix’s HD-2D remake of “Torneko’s Great Adventure” has become a hot topic on a 5ch thread. The review cited complaints about the controls — frequent misinputs during diagonal movement and a multi-second freeze every time the player levels up — and argued that development should have been left to Chunsoft. The thread debated how involved series creator Seiichiro Nagahata actually is with the project, while some pushed back against taking a single review at face value.

I played this a lot back in the day, so I bought it out of nostalgia — nothing but regret since.

    The Bad
Controls are garbage. Diagonal movement is finicky, and you get constant misinputs in a game where every single turn matters.
Still happens constantly even after changing the settings

The log can't keep up, so it's hard to tell how much damage you actually did to enemies.
You can change the log to show 4 lines instead — made no difference

Every time you level up it freezes for about 5 seconds and stops taking input
Who was it that said it'd only be 2 seconds?

Slapping a sloppy HD-2D coat of paint on it isn't enough — did you actually debug this thing?
Wouldn't this never have happened if they'd just let Chunsoft handle development?
Square Enix is disrespecting its users as usual

    Hm? Anything good?
    The soundtrack

Torneko is the one that made roguelikes accessible and spread them across Japan

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Torneko’s Great Adventure” is the first entry in the Mystery Dungeon series, developed by (then) Chunsoft using the Dragon Quest IP. In the thread, posters contrast their trust in Chunsoft, which handled the original development, with unease over the team behind this remake. Opinions were split on how involved series creator Seiichiro Nagahata actually is: some say he’s moved into a managerial role and stepped back, while others claim he returned to hands-on work for the latest release, “Shiren 6” — the thread alone doesn’t settle which is accurate. There was also debate over whether it’s fair to judge the game’s overall quality from a single Steam review. Right after launch, when review counts are still low, ratings tend to swing to extremes, and they often settle into a steadier category like “Mostly Positive” as more reviews come in — worth keeping in mind when gauging a game’s reputation.

It’s been announced that former Morning Musume member Kago Ai will voice a role in the TV anime Yani Neko (“Smoker Cat”). She’ll also appear on the promotional obi band of the original manga. Given the title’s obvious nod to smoking, fans see the casting as a perfect fit for Kago, who left the group as a teenager back when her smoking was exposed. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, posters reminisced about her career at length, and the nickname "Boss Lady of the Smoking World" caught on — alongside plenty of talk about the circumstances of her departure and her life since. The mood was less about approval or disapproval and more just nostalgic.

She really did a number on Pistol-san's life.

    Background and Talking Points

Kago Ai left Morning Musume in the early 2000s after being caught smoking while still a minor, and “yani” (smoking) has been closely tied to her public image ever since. Her casting in Yani Neko is being read as a role that turns that history into a selling point, with the thread filling up with comments calling it a “perfect fit” and crowning her the “Boss Lady of the Smoking World.” At the same time, Kago has repeatedly made headlines over the years for a string of personal scandals — a post-departure hiatus, divorce, and her ex-husband’s arrest among them — and plenty of posts in the thread dredged that history back up. Some of the rumors floating around, including claims about drug use, couldn’t be confirmed, so this article excludes posts built on that unverified information. The renewed attention could also spill over into questions about her activity as a Hello! Project OG (graduate) and whether she might turn up at the group’s upcoming anniversary events.

Apparently this guy — who's too timid to even call over a server at a restaurant — wants to be seen as manly, and he's all "I want to have sex every day!"
She apparently doesn't feel any sexual attraction to him at all

It sounds like it's become "normal" precisely because you do everything
She said you're her first boyfriend, right? That makes it even more likely to feel normal to her
Why not try asking her something like "It'd make me happy if you did this!"
    108AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:18
Just to check, does your girlfriend actually love you?
    110AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:23
    Re: #108
She doesn't really say "I love you" on her own much
If I ask her directly she'll say she loves me
But when we're together she gets really clingy in a sweet way
She's the one who snuggles up against my chest, and she'll fix the blanket for me while I'm sleeping — she does have that gentle side

They say love is blind, right?
    It's basically mild brainwashing
Once it wears off, it won't feel like such a big deal anymore
But if you're seriously determined to fix this, I'll think about how we can actually help
    116AnonymousSep 11, 2026 04:48
Guess it's no good after all, huh
She's only 21 and was a virgin, so I felt like I had to treasure her, and maybe I ended up spoiling her too much
Actually, the other day there was a moment where she basically tried to make me pay for something
When I told her flat out on the spot, "isn't this a bit off?"
she apologized honestly, saying, "sorry, I always have you paying for everything and I guess my sense of it got messed up"

    Re: #116
Then a few days later she brought it up again, grumbling on and on about that time
And that's when I started to feel distrustful of her…

    Re: #116
The way she outsources her own sense of restraint to someone else is a pretty big red flag

She'll probably keep repeating stuff like this going forward
And she probably won't even think it's that bad, since she can't judge right from wrong on her own

    Background and Key Issues

In Japanese dating culture, the custom of “the man pays more for dates” still runs deep, but in recent years more people have come to expect splitting costs or an equal financial footing, which makes friction likely across generations and individual attitudes. What divided opinion in the thread wasn’t the money itself, but how to interpret the presence or absence of gratitude and reciprocity. Whether it being taken for granted that he pays is really the girlfriend’s personal issue, or whether it stems from the poster never having clearly voiced his frustration until now, can’t be determined from this post alone. Likewise, the explanation that “she just doesn’t understand because she has little relationship experience” is only the poster’s own interpretation, and there’s no way to confirm her side of the story. This should be read with the understanding that it reflects only a one-sided account.

  • Demon Slayer hits ¥40.2 billion box office, climbs to 3rd all-time — beating Spirited Away sparks buzz on 5ch

On 5ch’s “Live Anything Goes” board (なんでも実況G), it became a hot topic that the film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle Arc Chapter 1 had reached ¥40.24 billion at the box office, climbing to 3rd place all-time domestically. That figure surpasses Spirited Away’s ¥31.68 billion, and posters shared the latest box office ranking chart in the thread. Discussion ranged widely — predictions for the next chapter’s box office (opinions split from ¥20 billion to over ¥30 billion), the impact of the COVID pandemic and the Hollywood strikes on audience turnout, and comparisons with the bonus-goods sales tactics of classic Ghibli films — turning into a debate that went well beyond simple number comparisons.

Nausicaä, Laputa, Totoro — all sitting in the low single-billion-yen range.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Domestic Japanese box office figures are based on numbers released by Kogyo Tsushinsha (the box office reporting body), tallied as cumulative attendance and revenue since a film’s release. The figure cited in the thread — “¥169.6 billion combined across Demon Slayer’s two all-time franchise entries” — is a total across multiple films, separate from the single-film box office rankings, and it’s easy to confuse with the ¥40.24 billion figure for Chapter 1 alone, so some caution is warranted. The thread also debated whether theaters “monopolizing” screening slots could violate antitrust law, but seat allocation is largely shaped by the business customs of theaters and distributors, and isn’t something that can simply be judged black-and-white as a legal matter. The fact that Ghibli films’ box office totals look low compared to recent blockbusters is also influenced by the smaller number of theaters at the time of their release and by the different exhibition practices of an era before assigned-seat screenings — reading it as a straightforward measure of relative popularity risks being misleading.
