  • U-18 Asian Baseball Championship Super Round: Japan Takes On South Korea

On September 11, 2026, Japan’s U-18 national team faced South Korea in the Super Round of the U-18 Asian Baseball Championship. Japan started Maho Sugimoto of Omi High School, and South Korea’s decision to hold back pitcher Oda — who had been widely tipped as the starter — drew surprised reactions on the thread. Commenters in the live thread also latched onto details beyond the game itself, like the stadium’s spacious 102m foul lines and 122m to center, and an oddball mascot that can only throw underhand, while the back half of the thread saw some debate over what the preliminary round even accomplished.

Not in the sense of deciding a champion
It's also meant to grow the sport by getting more countries involved

    Background and Discussion Points

The U-18 Asian Baseball Championship is structured so that teams who advance from the preliminary round move into a round-robin “Super Round.” Some posters on the thread, like >>149, questioned what the point of the preliminary round even was, but as >>151 explains, the tournament isn’t only about crowning a champion — it’s also meant to grow the sport across Asia by involving more participating countries. That’s not obvious from the standings alone, but tournaments built around this kind of grassroots-growth goal aren’t unusual. There was also chatter suggesting South Korea was “getting complacent” by not starting the pitcher they’d been expected to feature, but that could just as easily reflect pitch-count management or a rotation built around the final — reading intent or overconfidence purely from a lineup decision is jumping the gun.

  • Traveling Alone Makes You a “Loser”? 5ch Erupts Into Fierce Debate

A thread that started with the post “Anyone who travels alone is a loser” sparked heated debate on 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board. The original poster argued that “traveling with others multiplies the fun,” treating solo travel as proof that someone has no friends. Solo-travel defenders fired back, saying “you can decide everything at your own pace” and “you meet new people on the road,” and the exchange quickly escalated. Before long, the thread drifted away from travel itself and into pointed jabs at each other.

    Re: #110
Huh? If you actually have a life, you'd die surrounded by family, wouldn't you?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In Japan, solo dining options like “hitori yakiniku” (solo grilled-meat dining) and “hitori karaoke” (solo karaoke) have become widely accepted for the “ohitorisama” (people who do things alone) crowd, but travel is still widely assumed to be something done with friends or family. This thread played out that same clash in values: one side treated solo travel as proof of loneliness, while the other championed the freedom of “not having to coordinate schedules with a companion.” Interestingly, the very poster who dismissed solo travel later criticized another solo hobby — mountain climbing — as “unproductive,” and other commenters were quick to call out the contradiction. The real fault line wasn’t whether travel itself is good or bad, but differing views on whether enjoying things alone is valid in the first place — and, true to form for a 5ch thread, it ended with no clear resolution, both sides talking past each other.

  • Business Manager Visa Capital Requirement Raised to ¥30 Million — Nepali Curry Shop Owners Face Closure

Japan’s Immigration Services Agency has raised the capital requirement for the “Business Manager” visa — the residency status foreigners use to start and run companies in Japan — to a new threshold of ¥30 million. Yahoo! News reports that this is hitting cash-strapped sole proprietors hard, including a Nepali restaurateur who has run a curry shop in Tokyo for about nine years and now faces closure because he can’t meet the new requirement; industry watchers predict that as much as 90% of Nepali- and Indian-run curry shops could disappear by 2028. The report sparked a thread on 5ch where some welcomed the tougher rules, while others questioned whether the change actually accomplishes anything, since Chinese-funded companies — which can easily raise ¥30 million — would simply “slip through” the net and be the ones left standing.

    ● The “¥30 million wall” could wipe out authentic curry

“With the visa requirements getting stricter, I think 90% of the restaurants run by Nepali and Indian people will be gone by 2028. The places where you can get authentic curry for around ¥1,000 will probably disappear.”

Speaking with a note of regret is Mr. Bista (pseudonym, 35), who hails from Nepal and has run a curry restaurant in Tokyo for about nine years. He now finds himself up against the new “¥30 million in capital” requirement for the “Business Manager” residency status.

No thanks to anyone with no respect for the law.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Business Manager” residency status allows foreigners to start companies in Japan and stay on as their operators, and it has long been criticized for being abused via shell companies with little real substance. The new ¥30 million capital requirement appears aimed at weeding out those hollow shell-company setups, but opinion on 5ch was split. Many users questioned whether the rule would actually work, arguing that it singles out cash-poor operators — like the Nepali and Indian curry shop owners running budget ¥1,000-range restaurants — while well-funded Chinese-backed companies can clear the new bar with ease. Some also claimed that remittances foreign workers send home are contributing to the weak yen, or raised concerns about friction between foreign communities and local residents, but these were speculation within the thread, not facts confirmed by the original article.

  • Shohei Ohtani’s Delayed IL Stint: US Report Claims He ‘Deceived the Team About the Severity of His Injury’

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list (IL) due to poor condition in his right upper arm, with manager Dave Roberts admitting the team had delayed the move, saying, “We’ve put it off as long as we possibly could.” Ohtani has been mired in a batting slump since late August and had already sat out six of the team’s last seven games before this decision, and U.S. media have reported that he concealed the severity of the injury from the club. On 5ch, the thread mixed comments showing a lack of understanding of how the IL system works, voices questioning the team’s handling of the situation, and speculation about contract clauses governing how Ohtani is used.

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani, 32, is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list (IL) on the 10th (11th Japan time) due to poor condition in his right upper arm, manager Dave Roberts revealed. The move will be applied retroactively to the 8th (9th Japan time), meaning the earliest he could return is the home game against the Padres on the 23rd (24th Japan time).

[Rare Photo] Shohei Ohtani Eating a Snack

Ohtani has been stuck in a batting slump since late August, and it was clear something was off. He had sat out six of the team’s last seven games. Manager Roberts explained, “We want to reset, get him feeling right, and have him at his best heading into the postseason,” while admitting the call came late: “We put [the decision] off as long as we possibly could.”

Background and Key Points of This Story

MLB’s IL (injured list) is a system with a minimum 15-day stint meant to get players back on the field, and a player can be placed on it even without a serious injury. The point of contention here is why the move was delayed for so long, given that Ohtani had been in a slump since late August and had sat out six of the team’s last seven games. Opinions in the thread split between those arguing “Ohtani’s own wishes are being prioritized” or “the team is tiptoeing around him,” and those who think “the team simply failed to catch it and reacted late.” It’s worth noting that claims like “he refused a full medical exam” or “he faked being sick to skip the All-Star Game” are unconfirmed rumors, not verified facts. The details of any contract clauses covering playing time or roster moves also haven’t been officially disclosed.

  • Me: “Isn’t CoCo Ichi Pricey for What You Get?” Mysterious Forces: “Must Suck Being Poor!!!”

When a thread starter on 5ch’s Newsokuvip board posted, “Isn’t CoCo Ichi kind of pricey for the quality?”, other users pushed back one after another with replies like “It’s cheap” and “It’s a place for broke people.” Those arguing back posted numerous images comparing prices and portion sizes with other chains like Matsuya’s gyumeshi (beef bowl), pointing out that the standard rice serving is 300g — double what beef bowl chains give you. The discussion eventually derailed from the price itself into a nitpicky argument over the definition of “topping,” and it dragged on without ever reaching a conclusion.

No matter how you look at it, I think CoCo Ichi has the lowest average spend per customer
It's one of the cheapest places to eat, so complaining about the taste is just wrong

    For comparison

Just go on eating your plain curry forever saying it's cheap and delicious lol

Background and Key Points of the Debate

CoCo Ichibanya lets customers adjust their rice in 200g increments, and even the standard serving is 300g — double what beef bowl chains typically give. Because of this, comparing only the base price against chains like Matsuya or Sukiya can make it look overpriced, but once you factor in portion size and customizability, opinions tend to split. In the thread, the “it’s one of the cheapest around” camp and the “once you add toppings it’s expensive” camp never quite found common ground, and before long the discussion drifted from the price debate itself into wordplay over how to define a “topping.” It’s also worth noting that the claim from a poster identifying as a “former employee” — that most customers order the no-topping 200g curry — is unverified hearsay, and nothing in the thread confirms it as fact.

  • Sony and Kojima Productions’ Split Sparks Buzz — 5ch: “If It’s Just a Passion Project, of Course It Gets Cut”

In the gaming industry, reports that Sony and Kojima Productions have parted ways sparked a discussion on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board about the reasons behind it. Sony’s in-house new title “PHYSINT” was announced in February 2024, but as of September 2025 it remains only at the cast-announcement stage, suggesting development is still in its early phases. Kojima’s side, meanwhile, appears to be focused on a new Microsoft-backed title called “OD.” Theories flew back and forth — that the split stems from development delays themselves, that it’s tied to Sony’s cost-cutting policy, or speculation around exclusivity deals and funding structures — making clear that the business circumstances behind it aren’t as simple as a falling-out.

Saying flat-out in the Death Stranding 2 marketing that "this isn't for everyone" feels like it was a bad move in hindsight.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Kojima Productions became independent from Konami in 2015 and has developed the Death Stranding series with funding and cooperation from Sony. “PHYSINT,” the title at the center of this discussion, was announced in February 2024 as a new Sony-backed project, but as of September 2025 it remains at the cast-announcement stage, suggesting it’s still in the early stages of development. Sony, meanwhile, has been tightening cost controls in recent years following the major failure of Concord, studio closures, and layoffs — a context that feeds into both the “development-cost burden” theory and the “planned withdrawal” theory. Opinions on the forum were split over whether the split was initiated by Kojima or decided by Sony, and how Sony’s contractual obligations to AMD regarding the PS6 might factor in — though all of this remains speculation in the absence of any official explanation. It’s worth noting that neither Sony nor Kojima Productions has officially stated a reason for the split, and the thread’s discussion doesn’t go beyond outside speculation.

It’s been revealed that Level-5’s new entry in the Professor Layton series will not be available for physical pre-order in stores on PS5 — it will be digital-only. The Switch and Switch 2 versions, by contrast, will get standard physical packaging as usual, meaning the same title is being treated differently depending on platform. Following the announcement, 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board lit up with a mix of reactions: some saying it’s no surprise given the ongoing decline of disc culture, others pointing out the inconvenience of not being able to resell the game if it turns out to be a dud, and still others debating just how high PS5’s actual digital download ratio really is.

They didn't even mention Decapolice's release getting delayed — they just quietly changed the release date to 2027 on the official site afterward.
    5AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:25
Is this really something to complain about?
Not getting shelf space in stores was already the writing on the wall.
    6AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:26
They dropped Kojima (the electronics retail chain) and now they're ditching discs too — PlayStation's basically winding down at this point, huh?
    8AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:26
Sony HQ itself (lit. 'the high command') said they're done with discs, so
no physical version is just the new normal now.
    9AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:27
If 90% of sales are digital anyway, you don't really need a disc, do you?
    10AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:28
They just made sure the 'kids' console' (Switch) still gets a physical version — no real problem here, is there?
    11AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:29
This is probably also a response to how Fantasy Life sold —
I mean, the sales were bad enough that this kind of move is understandable.
    12AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:30
Wish they'd bring the shelved one (likely means Decapolice, mentioned above as delayed) to Xbox ("箱"/"box" = 5ch slang for Xbox) too — it'd pair great with a subscription service.
    13AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:30
Once discs are discontinued entirely this'll just be normal, so lol, get used to it now.
    14AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:30
Every future Level-5 game is probably only getting physical releases on Switch 1 and 2 anyway.
    17AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:31
Sucks, but once discs get phased out this'll be the norm everywhere.
Good thing we get to practice for it early.
    18AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:32
You don't even need to wait for discs to be discontinued —
by next year everything except Final Fantasy will probably be like this.
    25AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:33

More like next fiscal year, really.
From April onward it'll be almost entirely download-only.
    19AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:32
They'll still put out a PlayStation version, just digital-only —
this is going to become the norm for other publishers too.

But the average price for the digital version is something like 3,500 yen (~$23), which means everyone's just buying it on sale, lol. How long are you gonna keep lying to yourself?
    101AnonymousSep 11, 2026 14:25
    Re: #20
Do you seriously think this particular game's digital ratio is high?
On PS5 it's probably under 1,000 units if we're being honest.
    21AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:33
What's annoying about this is that
you can't even resell it if the game turns out to be trash.
Well, we all saw this coming.
    28AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:36
    Re: #21
On top of that, Level-5 is a repeat offender when it comes to the 'definitive edition' money grab.
Even in the Layton series, back on the DS they'd re-release minor updates with improved controls,
the 3DS's 'Mask of Miracle' got a later DX edition with extra puzzles and cutscenes tacked on,
and the Katrielle game went 3DS → Switch → Switch again, with a recast voice cast each time.
    23AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:33
At this rate, only Switch and Switch 2 physical buyers get to grab it at stores for around a 20% discount on release day,
while PS5 players get no choice and are stuck paying full price with no discount at all.
At the very least they could run some kind of early pre-order sale for the digital version so it's not so unequal for PS5 owners.
    27AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:36
    Re: #23
There's no upside to putting effort into the PS5 version anyway.
If you want it cheap, just buy a Switch.
    End of story, lol.
    64AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:55
    Re: #23
    Unequal how, exactly?
If there were a price gap between the physical and digital versions on Switch, I could kind of see the 'unequal' argument, but choosing a platform that only has a digital version was the buyer's own choice, wasn't it?
If you've got a complaint, just buy the Switch physical version — problem solved, no?
    24AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:33
If you want to be able to resell it, just buy it on Switch 2, simple as that.
    32AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:38
Well, regardless of the whole disc-discontinuation thing, Level-5 never intended to put out physical versions that don't sell anyway.
Even with Inazuma Eleven, only the later Switch 2 release got a physical edition.
    47AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:45
So it's PlayStation users who actually want a disc after all, huh.
    51AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:47
    Re: #47
More precisely, if you want to buy it, play it, and immediately resell it to play as cheaply as possible, it has to be a physical copy.
    48AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:46
I bet they worked hard digging this up from social media, but
only a tiny minority (5%) are actually complaining about Layton not having a physical version.
The vast majority of users (95%) buy digital anyway, so not having a physical version doesn't bother them at all.
    50AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:47
    Re: #48
Isn't that 95% mostly Switch owners? Of course it's not a problem for them, lol.

    80AnonymousSep 11, 2026 14:08
Why would you even want a physical copy?
There's no future for it on PS5 anyway.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Behind this lies a broader trend: Sony is said to be gradually scaling back physical distribution for PS5 and consolidating toward digital-only sales. Some posters in the thread claimed that ‘reprint production will end entirely in January 2028,’ but this should be treated as unverified chatter circulating on 5ch rather than an official announcement.

The discussion split into two main camps. One side treated the shrinking of physical media as the expected direction things are heading, saying this will simply become the norm going forward. The other side focused on the inconvenience of not being able to resell a digital-only game if it turns out to be a letdown, highlighting the difference in resale value that a physical copy offers.

Opinions also diverged over whether PS5’s digital sales ratio really is as high as 90%, with some posters citing actual sales figures for other titles to cast doubt on that number. That said, these figures were unofficial estimates raised within the thread, not official statistics, and should be read with that caveat in mind.

    Who's Tanaso?

Well, they're basically Sasaji's [longtime arranger Masanori Sasaji] band at the core anyway

    Background and Points of Debate

Spitz formed in 1987, and their signature song “Robinson” became a massive hit in 1996 — ever since, the band has repeatedly found itself caught between a “one-hit wonder” reputation and the reality of a much longer career. This new album is their 18th, and more than 30 years after their debut they’re still touring and landing near the top of the streaming charts, holding onto solid support. The thread split between the view that “the songs all sound alike and get old” and the counter-argument that “the quality is still high” — worth noting both sides base their case mainly on how the live shows feel rather than any objective measure. Some also complained tickets are hard to get, but that’s largely down to the fan-club-priority sales system, not something unique to Spitz. A claim that they’ve never appeared on Kohaku also came up, though the article offers no way to verify it.

  • Even With ¥160 Million in Assets, Elderly Renters Still Get Rejected — 5ch: ‘Just Get Into a Nursing Home’

According to the head of real estate agency R65 Fudousan, even a person in their 70s with roughly ¥160 million in assets has been turned down during a rental screening. Landlords tend to avoid elderly tenants out of fear of “lonely deaths,” dementia, and the hassle of clearing out belongings after death — meaning a fat bank balance alone doesn’t guarantee approval. On 5ch, this set off a wave of comments like “if they’ve got that much money, just buy a condo or house outright,” while others shared their own experience of being rejected by landlords over age when trying to sell their home and move into a rental. The thread turned into a broader debate over housing choices in old age.

According to Ryo Yamamoto, head of R65 Fudousan, there’s no clear age cutoff where rental screenings suddenly get stricter. Still, most people who come to him for help after being rejected are in their 60s, and there have even been cases of people in their 40s being turned down because of their age.

The main reasons landlords shy away from elderly tenants are worries about lonely deaths, the onset of dementia, and having to deal with the deceased’s belongings afterward. Even someone with more than enough assets can be rejected over these risks.

Yamamoto says there was in fact a case of someone in their 70s with about ¥160 million in assets being turned away. Applicants are often never given a clear reason for the rejection, but part of the problem seems to be that the rental agencies themselves have no track record placing elderly tenants, so vague unease keeps them from even making the introduction.

Good luck — those subsidized nursing homes have long waitlists, you don't just walk in.

    10AnonymousSep 11, 2026 10:35
It's not like the landlord gets the whole estate anyway — assets have nothing to do with why they're rejecting people.

The problem is people just give up after one 'no.' Install a remote monitoring system that checks you're alive every day, sign an exclusive contract with a cleanup company for if you do die, and offer to put your assets in escrow — that's how you get approved.

Between them going senile, needing a legal guardianship set up, or starting a small fire — it's a huge hassle for landlords. Honestly, renting to foreigners is less of a headache.

    Background and Key Points

What this article really shows is that there’s no clear age cutoff for rental screenings — there have even been cases of people in their 40s being rejected. Landlords’ concerns center on the risk of lonely deaths, the onset of dementia, and having to clear out a deceased tenant’s belongings, none of which are resolved simply by having more assets. The thread was full of comments along the lines of “if they’ve got the money, just buy a used condo or a house” — but that’s only a workaround after being rejected, and it overlooks people who choose to rent for health reasons or simply to live a lighter, simpler lifestyle. It’s also easy to miss that rejected applicants are often never given a clear reason, leaving them to search for the next property without ever knowing why they were turned down. Some pointed out that programs like UR housing don’t require a guarantor and are easier to get into, though the available units there are limited.

  • J3 Cellar-Dwellers Thespa Gunma: President Hajime Hosogai Issues Statement — Thread Debates the Team’s Results and the Origin of His Name

With Thespa Gunma sitting at the bottom of J3 with a record of 1 win and 4 losses, club president Hajime Hosogai released a statement to fans and supporters on the 11th via the club’s official website, saying the club “takes this extremely seriously.” Hosogai is a former Japan national team midfielder who played for Kashiwa Reysol, Urawa Reds, and clubs in Germany, but on 5channel forum threads, the conversation went well beyond blunt criticism of the team’s results — spinning off into the reading and origin of his name “Moe,” leftover traces of the club’s old “Thespakusatsu Gunma” days, and tangents ranging from comparisons to baseball players to random trivia.

    Gekisaka, 9/11 10:33

Thespa Gunma president Hajime Hosogai released a statement via the club’s official website on the 11th.

Gunma currently sits at the bottom of J3 with a record of 1 win and 4 losses. We are deeply grateful to the fans and supporters who keep pushing the team forward and fighting alongside us no matter the circumstances.”

Hosogai, Shiogai, Isogai… (wordplay on surnames ending in "-gai," meaning "shellfish")
he's the weakest shellfish of the bunch.

His career's the best of all of them, though.

Kanō's "Nice Guy" (comedian Eikō Kanō's catchphrase — also rhymes on the "-gai" sound)

What a name for a company president.
    17AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:29
    Re: #9
    Uh, he's a full-blown former national team player though…
    16AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:29
If they want to aim any higher, they should put "Maebashi" or "Takasaki" in the team name.
    26AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:34
    Re: #16
    Let's rename them Arte Takasaki.
    19AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:30
    Oh, so it's "Hosogai Hajime."
Jealous that his wife is Meika Nakamura (pro badminton player).
    20AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:32
So this is basically a declaration that the president won't be showing his face after matches.
Well, it'd be a waste of time and pointless anyway, so I think saying so upfront is fine.
    21AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:32
Oh, the Hosogai who was at Kashiwa and went overseas?
So this is where he ended up.
    22AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:32
No need to have any dialogue with the supporters at all.
    24AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:34
    I don't even follow J2, let alone J3.
Actually didn't even know how many teams are in J right now.
Don't care about anyone except Mitoma.
    27AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:35
He went to a fairly big-name Bundesliga club, right? Wonder if he actually held his own there.
    48AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:59
    Re: #27
Not a big-name club at all.
It's the club people said there was "no point" in "Mikicchi" (nickname for a Japanese pro footballer) joining.
    28AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:35
Loosely translated, it basically means "quit whining just because you lost, it's annoying."
    29AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:36
So "Kusatsu" has been completely wiped from the team name now?
    Poor Kusatsu.
    31AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:38
Football's rough in Gunma for both the men's and women's sides.
    32AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:38
Kitakyushu's out here plunging toward amateur status despite having sole use of what's basically the world's most lavish stadium for its level,
and Gunma's losing at a pace that keeps right up with them.
    33AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:38
I wonder what level J3 players are actually at.

Like, ace striker at some no-name high school?

    Re: #33
The strong teams are decently strong — good enough that players even transfer in from J1.
The weak teams are just weak…
    44AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:57
    Re: #33
That's probably more like the JFL or a regional league below that.
J3's level is a lot higher — it's actually surprising once you watch it.
JFL's gotten noticeably better lately too, so Japanese football still has plenty of room to keep getting stronger.
    43AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:55
Hosogai "Moe" was born in 1986, so he's 40 now — that's before otaku culture had turned "moe" into slang like "~-tan, so moe!" or maid cafés chanting "moe moe kyun~," so his parents probably just used the character "萌" (moe) in his name with none of that baggage attached.
By the way, 萌 is written "moe" but actually read "Hajime."
    63AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:15
    Re: #43
Ah, so it's not actually a flashy "kira-kira" baby name after all.
Though his parents might've been holding their heads in their hands once the Densha Otoko boom hit and "moe" took on a whole new meaning lol
    68AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:22
    Re: #43
I'm from that generation too — had a female classmate named Moe as well. Kind of a shame the word ended up meaning something totally different from what was intended.
Originally it's a name meant to carry wishes like a plant sprouting a bud — "the start of something new," "vigorous, healthy growth," and "hope for a bright future."
    46AnonymousSep 11, 2026 12:58
    Who cares about J3.
Same as being told the results of an NPB team's third-string farm games — I don't know how I'm supposed to react to that.

Your take there is worse than the late Harimoto's (Isao Harimoto, ex-baseball star turned TV commentator notorious for out-of-touch opinions).

There's nowhere left to fall, so just settle in and rebuild the team properly.

There is somewhere lower — that's exactly the problem.
    69AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:25
Why does football keep putting ex-players with zero business experience in the president's chair?
Pretty sure Morishima did the same thing, didn't he?
    75AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:36
    Re: #69
Because a recognizable face makes it easier to do sales and PR.
Back in the day it'd be some suit parachuted in from the parent company with zero interest in football, getting yelled at by supporters through a megaphone to "take responsibility" or "resign."
Put a former player in as president, though, and it's a lot harder for supporters to string him up.
    76AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:37
    Re: #69
At small clubs the president ends up handling sales too,
so being famous is a real advantage there.
    70AnonymousSep 11, 2026 13:26
The club was finished the moment it ditched "Kusatsu" from its name.

    Re: #70
The hot spring's tourist numbers stay steady regardless of Thespa,
and the club was never really getting much synergy just from riding on Kusatsu Onsen's name recognition anyway.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Thespa Gunma is a regional club that traces its roots to the former Thespakusatsu Gunma, and J3 is generally regarded as the J.League tier with the least name recognition and financial muscle. President Hajime Hosogai is a former Japan national team midfielder who played for Kashiwa Reysol, Urawa Reds, and clubs in Germany, making him one of several former players who have moved into club management after retiring. The thread featured blunt criticism of the team’s poor form this season, but also plenty of comments recognizing Hosogai’s playing career, plus more casual tangents about the era when the name “Moe” became common and the story behind “Kusatsu” being dropped from the old team name — so the discussion wasn’t uniformly critical of the president. It’s also worth keeping in mind the structural difficulty J3 clubs face in balancing sound management with on-field results, which forms part of the backdrop here.
