  • Kingdom’s Latest Chapter Puts Ka Ryo Ten in Danger — 5ch: “Kyou Kai Made Her Pointless”

In the latest chapter of “Kingdom,” Hi Shin Unit’s Ka Ryo Ten is drawn into a scene where she’s nearly attacked by an enemy, sparking a flood of reactions on 5ch the moment it dropped. Discussion centered on Ka Ryo Ten’s shrinking role in the story as combat-focused characters like Kyou Kai take the spotlight, plus whether one particularly risqué line of dialogue was appropriate — though plenty of replies veered off-topic entirely, posting photos of Kanna Hashimoto (who plays Ka Ryo Ten in the live-action films) and Masami Nagasawa (who plays You Tanwa), with the thread often getting more excited about the cast than the manga itself.

You don't see much of the supply lines or rear support, but Maron's apparently handling that
On the front lines there's Kyou Kai and [text unclear in original, possibly referring to instinct-driven Shin], and beyond where their command reaches, someone's still moving units like the Hi Hyou corps, archers, and infantry

Movie's Ka Ryo Ten! → WOOOOO Kanna Hashimoto!!!
Movie's You Tanwa! → WOOOOO Masami Nagasawa!!

    The main heroine… movie's Kyou Kai! → uh… woo…

    Background and Talking Points

“Kingdom” has been a hit historical manga for over a decade, with an ongoing live-action film series. In this scene, Ka Ryo Ten — who serves as a strategist-like figure within Hi Shin Unit — is cornered by an enemy general, and the thread was split on how much she actually contributes to the story. Some argued she still fills a valuable role as the exposition/reaction character, while others felt her presence has faded as combat-focused characters like Kyou Kai have risen in prominence — arguably reflecting how her original heroine role from early in the series has shifted as the story has grown into more of an ensemble narrative. How far this storyline goes remains to be seen in future chapters and was still undetermined at the time of writing.

  • Ryuji Okamura Says ‘Poor Thing’ in Sympathy Over Tomomi Itano’s Changing-Room Livestream Backlash, Opinions Split

On the September 10, 2026 broadcast of “Ninety-Nine’s All Night Nippon,” Ryuji Okamura expressed sympathy over Tomomi Itano’s “changing-room livestream” controversy, saying things like “that’s genuinely scary” and “poor thing.” Itano had been criticized for streaming video from the changing room of the hotel where she was staying, and the show noted that Okamura had also defended her during a separate controversy 13 years ago, calling her “a sharp kid.” On 5ch forums, reactions to his comments split between users pointing out that Okamura may not be aware the hotel has denied giving permission to film, and broader disagreement over whether defending her was warranted in the first place.

Last year's video didn't blow up, so I don't think there are that many people that fixated on her. Though once something does blow up like this, it does seem like a lot of people who already disliked her pile on.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The “changing-room controversy” surrounding Tomomi Itano began when she streamed video from the changing room of the hotel where she was staying, and the core of the dispute is that the hotel later denied ever giving permission to film there. On air, Ryuji Okamura repeated an explanation along the lines of “they filmed with permission, outside business hours” — but this simply relayed Itano’s side of the story as-is, and differs from the hotel’s own account. What split the thread was whether Okamura’s sympathetic “poor thing” take was grounded in the actual facts: supporters praised him for being consistent since he defended her 13 years ago, while critics took issue with him defending her without confirming the key question of whether permission was actually given. As far as the article shows, the debate centers less on whether the controversy itself is justified and more on the mismatch over whose account to believe.

*This article is compiled and summarized from excerpts of the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread ““Poor thing” — Ryuji Okamura sympathizes with Tomomi Itano’s “changing-room controversy,” saying “genuinely scary”; also defended her 13 years ago during an earlier controversy, calling her “a sharp kid”.”

  • Chilled crab ramen food poisoning grows to 123 victims — no hygiene records kept; 5ch: “The Pathogen House is still open for business”

Food poisoning caused by chilled crab ramen sold by “Komeo’s Shop” in Tokyo has grown from 78 victims last week to 123. According to reports, the shop failed to keep the hygiene management records required under the Food Sanitation Act, and the Staphylococcus aureus detected is a bacterium known for easily contaminating food via cuts or wounds on the hands. On 5ch, sympathy for owner Komeo’s background and hopes for his comeback clashed with harsh criticism of the shop’s lax hygiene management, while questions were also raised about the qualification system itself and the fact that the group’s brick-and-mortar restaurant remains open.

    Fri, 9/11, 5:00 PM

Regarding the “chilled crab ramen” that caused the food poisoning, it has come to light that the shop had not kept the hygiene management records required by law. The shop’s representative, Komeo, spoke with the program.

The number of food poisoning patients, which stood at 78 last week, has now surpassed 120.

    Pfft (scoffing laugh)

I'd wanted to try my hand overseas for a long time. But I have a past prison record, so I can't get financing for a new business. I'm still far too green as an entrepreneur, and I didn't even think I'd be able to make it abroad.

The reason I decided to take on this challenge anyway is because I want to change the way Japanese food has become "cheap." Japan's food culture deserves to be something we're prouder of.

When I gave a presentation at REAL VALUE, Mr. Mizoguchi told me, "To achieve your goals, you should borrow the strength of all kinds of people." Those words pushed me forward. Kunimitsu-san of the REAL VALUE mafia taught someone like me, who can't get a bank loan, about a mechanism called Financie, and so today I've decided to open the community.

This crab ramen isn't just a bowl of noodles — it's **a challenge to reclaim Japan's pride, powered by everyone's strength**.

If you pay the fee and take the course, you get the "person in charge" certificate even if you sleep through the whole thing.
And on top of that, there's no renewal required.
There are plenty of ramen shops out there still displaying a grease-stained certificate from a course they took 30 years ago.
If there were renewal courses every five years or so, they'd cover the latest food poisoning cases, and it might actually shift people's awareness a bit.

Background and Key Points of This Story

In many Japanese municipalities, the “food hygiene supervisor” qualification requires only a single training session, with no mandatory renewal or retraining — and posters in the thread pointed to this regulatory laxity as part of the problem. Staphylococcus aureus is also naturally present on the skin and in the nasal passages of healthy people; when it enters food via a cut or wound, the toxin it produces while multiplying is what causes the food poisoning. That toxin is heat-resistant and doesn’t break down easily even with later cooking, so the simple assumption that “cooking it makes it safe” can be misleading — an easy point to overlook. While the thread is dominated by sympathy for, or criticism of, the owner personally, the actual regulatory violation — the missing hygiene records — and the operational issue of the affiliated restaurant staying open haven’t been examined in much depth. Preventing a repeat may call for scrutinizing the oversight system itself rather than just debating one person’s character.

Nissin Foods’ new commercial for “Donbei” instant udon, titled “The Broth Has Changed,” starring Riho Yoshioka, began airing September 11, with a behind-the-scenes video released the same day. The spot features the popular character “Don-gitsune” (Fox Girl), whose comeback after four years made headlines back in March 2026, appearing alongside a new character, “Kitsune Aniki” (“Big Bro Fox”), against a Paris-style backdrop. On 5ch, self-deprecating jokes about how “her only famous role is an instant-noodle commercial” piled up, alongside comparisons to past Donbei ads featuring Anmi Ka and Yuriko Yoshitaka, and grumbling about the product’s recent reformulation.

    September 11, 2026

A new TV commercial for “Nissin Donbei,” titled “The Broth Has Changed,” starring actress Riho Yoshioka, begins airing nationwide on September 11. The same day, Nissin Foods Group’s official YouTube channel will also release the full commercial along with a behind-the-scenes video.

Yoshioka plays the popular character “Don-gitsune” (Fox Girl), whose return this past March after roughly four years generated buzz. This new commercial, which centers on the fact that Donbei’s “broth has changed,” is set against a Paris-like cityscape. Clutching a bag of “hon-karebushi” (premium dried bonito flakes) the way one might hold a baguette, Don-gitsune transforms — set to an arrangement of the classic song “Kimi wa Bara Yori Utsukushii” (“You Are More Beautiful Than a Rose”) — from a classic black dress into an outfit featuring a blue top, a fox-colored miniskirt, hair wrapped in a scarf, and a white coat.

    Background and Talking Points

The Donbei “Don-gitsune” (Fox Girl) commercial series has run on and off over the years, and its “four years later” comeback in March 2026 was itself newsworthy. This latest spot ties into a broth reformulation, and since past lineups have included Anmi Ka as well as the pairing of Yuriko Yoshitaka and Rihito Itagaki, many thread comments reminisced about the revolving cast over the years. The self-deprecating line that “her most famous role is a Donbei ad” came up again and again, suggesting that even as Riho Yoshioka has taken on roles in NHK historical dramas and films in recent years, her image as a commercial fixture remains strong. There was also sarcasm about Nissin funding commercials amid ongoing price hikes, plus complaints about the product reformulation itself — though how much the character’s popularity actually translates into goodwill toward the product isn’t something the article alone makes clear.

The Hyogo Prefectural Police announced that it disciplined two officers, a man and a woman, with pay cuts for dereliction of duty after they engaged in sexual acts inside the police station and in a patrol car while on duty. According to ABC News, the male senior patrolman is married, and the matter came to light after his wife discovered his relationship with the female officer, prompting him to report it to his superiors himself. Both are said to have admitted the facts and expressed remorse. On 5ch’s “Breaking News Plus” board, reactions ranged from sarcasm about Hyogo police’s repeated scandals, to debate over whether the punishment fit the offense, to jokes tying the incident to Japan’s declining birthrate.

Background and key points of this story

Disciplinary action against police officers is a matter of internal conduct rules, separate from criminal punishment — and in this case too, the grounds for discipline weren’t the sexual acts themselves but the fact that the officers neglected their duties while on shift (a violation of their obligation to devote themselves to their work). Because one of the two was married, the case drew attention as an “affair,” but as far as reported, the affair itself wasn’t the reason for the punishment. On the thread, the sense that Hyogo police scandals keep making headlines drew a pile of sarcasm, while opinions split between a more forgiving “if they were both single it’d be one thing” camp and an “it’s out of the question since they were on duty” camp. The fact that the case came to light not through an internal report but because a spouse noticed also left posters wondering how many similar cases never make it into the open.

  • Shizuoka Prefecture Moves Toward Charging Reckless Winter Climbers on Mt. Fuji for Costs

Reports say Shizuoka Prefecture is in the final stages of coordinating a policy that would require reckless climbers who attempt Mt. Fuji in winter and end up needing rescue to pay a financial penalty. During the harshest winter months, Mt. Fuji’s official trails are closed, but climbing isn’t legally banned outright — it’s simply treated as “climb at your own risk.” The four cities and one town at the base of the mountain on the Shizuoka side have already requested that paid access be considered, and this latest move builds on that push. On the 5ch thread, posters floated ideas like folding insurance costs into an entry fee or setting steep rescue fees, while others questioned whether charging foreign tourists would actually work, what happens if someone refuses to pay, and why Yamanashi Prefecture isn’t on the same page.

    September 11, 2026, 3:01 PM

In an effort to cut down on rescue operations carried out under the brutal conditions of Mt. Fuji in winter, Shizuoka Prefecture has entered final coordination on a deterrent policy that would impose financial costs on reckless climbers.

Several senior Shizuoka Prefecture officials revealed this on the 10th.

Background and Key Points of This Story

What’s actually confirmed in the article is only that Shizuoka Prefecture has entered final coordination on a policy direction of “seeking financial payment” — details like scope, amounts, and what happens if someone refuses to pay haven’t been disclosed. Debate on the thread centered mainly on whether this would actually work: some proposed folding insurance into the entry fee or setting steep rescue costs, while others repeatedly raised doubts about people dodging payment and about how much can realistically be enforced on foreign tourists. The thread also confirmed that even though Mt. Fuji’s official trails are closed in winter, climbing isn’t legally prohibited — it remains a “climb at your own risk” situation. Some also pointed out that Shizuoka and Yamanashi aren’t coordinated on this, meaning how effective the policy ends up being will depend heavily on how the final rules are designed.

    Background and Talking Points

Fuwa-chan went on hiatus after her conduct on an airplane, among other incidents, drew criticism, and later relaunched her career by joining the pro wrestling promotion Stardom. Opinions in the thread are split partly because there’s still no consensus on how to judge the past behavior that led to her hiatus, and partly because many pointed out that her phrase “kanpu naki made ni” (literally “utterly” or “thoroughly”) is normally used in a negative sense — to describe being completely crushed or defeated — making it an odd word choice for a declaration of resolve. At the same time, plenty of comments genuinely praised her performance at Korakuen Hall and her physical transformation, resulting in reactions too mixed to sum up as simple approval or disapproval.

  • Eating Tomato Paste for 3 Months Changes the Brain — 5ch: “So Ketchup Is the Ultimate Condiment”

A new study reports that a group who ate tomato paste every day for three months showed changes in both cognitive test scores and fMRI brain scans. Antioxidants found in tomatoes, such as lycopene, are thought to be involved. On 5ch, some praised the popularity of high-lycopene drinks and their fit with the Mediterranean diet, while others raised doubts about the study’s design — including the small number of participants and whether there was a proper control group — leaving opinions on the effect divided.

Study finds that eating tomato paste continuously for three months produces changes in cognitive function and brain scan images

Tomatoes are a popular food eaten worldwide, rich in nutrients including lycopene, the compound behind their red color.

A new study has reported that eating tomato paste continuously for three months leads to changes in cognitive function and brain scan images.

Some regular folks have already caught on to this. The 200ml carton of high-lycopene tomato juice is always sold out — because it's priced the same as regular tomato juice, so the smart shoppers grab the high-lycopene one.

Guess lycopene just has more marketing pull than other health claims? Though lately a lot of tomato juices are pushing GABA instead.

What bugs me is this paper doesn't touch on cholesterol at all — that's usually the first thing you'd expect them to mention. Makes me wonder if the results there just weren't great. A lot of other papers show pretty lukewarm effects on that front too.

If lycopene's so great, does that mean I got smarter over the summer from eating a ton of watermelon?

Cells are made of fat, and without antioxidants they just keep deteriorating.

A diet like the Mediterranean one, which supplies good-quality oils and antioxidants, is genuinely great — it's effective against stroke too.

But you can't eat nothing but tomatoes and olive oil year-round, so the real question becomes how you keep getting non-hexane-extracted oils and antioxidants into your diet.

Honestly, just using good-quality oil and good-quality salt in traditional Japanese cooking already makes it pretty healthy. Add something that gives you polyphenols as an occasional treat, and your diet has nothing to worry about.

If you don't build health up from the cellular level as a foundation, patching things up with medication later just leads to polypharmacy problems.

I mean, if you actually like tomato juice or unsweetened vegetable juice, you can just drink it for the price or the taste — that's fine. But the people buying the little bottles touting GABA or lycopene, choosing it for that reason rather than the taste, are probably people who don't actually like tomatoes to begin with. They're basically drinking it like medicine out of obligation, which is kind of sad in a way.

The English spelling is 'lycopene,' and since Japan generally uses Latin-style readings for such terms, it should technically be called 'rikopen' — not 'rikopin.'

Background and Key Points of Debate

The underlying paper was published in a journal put out by MDPI, a major open-access publisher also known for divided opinions on the rigor of its peer review. The main point of contention in the thread was the scale of the study — many raised doubts about the small number of participants and whether control conditions, such as a placebo group or dietary restrictions, were clearly specified. At the same time, some posts noted that many tomato juice buyers actively seek out high-lycopene products, pointing to real consumer interest in the topic. Commenters also noted that a news headline alone can’t tell you whether a “change” is good or bad — a reminder that topics like this can spread widely on the strength of a headline alone, without anyone checking the primary source, the paper itself.

  • Discs Are Dying, So Are Refunds: Wolverine Sparks Return-Policy Backlash on Foreign Forums

The trend of home consoles dropping physical (disc) versions in favor of download-only releases has sparked concern on overseas forums. The trigger was the new action game “Wolverine.” With its overseas reception looking rocky, commenters noted that a disc version could at least be resold secondhand to offset the loss — but digital versions are essentially non-refundable and non-returnable. The thread compared this to Steam’s refund policy (within two weeks of purchase and under two hours of playtime), while also debating the broader culture of buying new games with the expectation of reselling them later.

    Re: #92
If it were just Japan, maybe, but I can't see overseas consumers just letting this slide.

Background and key points of this discussion

In recent years, home consoles without disc drives — like the PS5 Digital Edition — have become more common. When a physical version exists, players can recoup part of the purchase price by reselling a finished game secondhand, but digital versions are generally not eligible for returns or refunds at all, and this asymmetry became the crux of the thread’s debate. Meanwhile, Steam offers refunds for PC purchases within two weeks and under two hours of playtime, and many commenters pointed out how thin console makers’ policies look by comparison. Some posts also argued that third-party publishers would find it harder to push shipments onto retailers, though it’s worth noting this was just one opinion within the thread, not a substantiated fact. The clash between those who embrace a resale-based consumer culture and those who see it as undervaluing developers’ work is also an extension of a long-running debate over what consoles should be.

  • Tapping the gas pump nozzle against the fuel filler: 5ch says “it’s brass, so no sparks fly”

The habit of lightly tapping a gas pump nozzle against the fuel filler neck with a “tonk tonk” sound became a hot topic on 5ch’s News VIP board. It started with someone pointing out that tapping the filler opening with the tip of the nozzle might generate sparks and lead to ignition. In the thread, a former gas station attendant said they’d “never given it a second thought,” while others countered with testimony like “back in the full-service era, we were taught never to do that,” splitting opinion. Commenters also noted that the nozzle is made of brass, a material designed to resist sparking, and that while Japan’s high humidity makes static-electricity ignition unlikely, videos of fires breaking out this way are often seen overseas.

But overseas there are videos posted all the time of it catching fire and causing a huge commotion.

Guess I'll host a music festival banging nozzles on filler necks

You've been bombing up there for a while now

Everyone around me does it all the time, myself included, and I've never seen or heard of an incident — the shape or material must just be engineered to handle it fine.
If a little tap could ignite the gasoline, alcoholics and old folks whose hands are always shaking would be dying every single day.

There sure are a lot of kids these days who don't know the classic "pull this off and win a million yen" challenge, huh?

I'm bad with gas stations — been driving for 20 years and have only pumped my own gas once or twice.
My dad (80 now) does it all for me.

    Wouldn't this solve it?
Bad at talking to attendants → go self-service
Don't get how the machine works → go full-service

    Background and points of debate

Under Japan’s Fire Service Act, self-service gas stations are required to have customers touch a static-discharge sheet before fueling, among other anti-static rules. The fact that the tip of the fueling nozzle is made of brass or another non-ferrous metal is also said to be a deliberate design choice, meant to keep sparks from forming even if it rubs against the filler neck. The claim circulating in the thread that “tapping the nozzle against it won’t produce sparks” appears to be based on this design. On the other hand, footage of fires caused by static electricity at gas stations overseas frequently goes viral, and some point to the dry, low-humidity climate abroad as a contributing factor. In the thread, opinions split because two separate questions got tangled together: the manners-based question of whether it’s okay to deliberately ignore a stated safety precaution no matter how tiny the actual fire risk is, and the scientific question of just how big or small that risk really is.
