  • Takuya Kimura Sings More SMAP Songs at First Solo Tour in 2.5 Years — 5ch Fires Back: ‘SMAP Was Never Just You’

Takuya Kimura (53) has been on his first solo live tour in about two and a half years since September 5, titled "TAKUYA KIMURA Live Tour 2026 Checkpoint." Spanning 9 shows in 5 cities, it’s his first tour since switching, this past May, from the record label he’d been with for years. Where he’d previously limited SMAP-era songs to just one or two numbers in the encore, he’s reportedly performing more of them this time around. On 5ch, this shift sparked speculation that it reflects Kimura’s belief that "SMAP is six people," while also stirring up a wide range of opinions about how SMAP broke up and his relationship with the former members.

"SMAP marked its 35th debut anniversary on September 9. The group disbanded at the end of 2016, but Kimura has kept its hit songs alive" (entertainment industry insider).

Takuya Kimura (53) is currently on his first solo live tour in about two and a half years, "TAKUYA KIMURA Live Tour 2026 Checkpoint," which kicked off September 5. Having switched this past May from the record label he’d been signed to since his SMAP days, he’s now holding 9 shows across 5 cities under his new label.

"Kimura has sung SMAP songs at his solo shows before, but he kept it to just one or two numbers, usually during the encore.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

SMAP disbanded at the end of 2016. Takuya Kimura stayed with the Johnny’s (now STARTO ENTERTAINMENT) label, while Masahiro Nakai, Goro Inagaki, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, and Shingo Katori left the agency and went their separate ways. Kimura switched record labels in May 2026 after years with his previous one, and this tour is his first solo performance since. Worth noting: the thread’s central questions — “why did they break up” and “whose fault was it” — rest on fragmentary accounts from industry sources, and even on 5ch the discussion never got past speculation with no definitive answer. That said, the thread also raised a point that’s easier to substantiate from public contract terms: the right to perform SMAP songs belongs to whoever stayed with the agency, not to those who left. In compiling this piece, comments amounting to speculation or personal attacks tied to actual criminal cases involving specific former members were excluded.

  • Bunshun Report: ‘Johnny’s Pressured the Industry to Block M!LK’s Rise’ Splits Opinion on 5ch

After Bunshun reported that Johnny & Associates has been pressuring various parties not to cooperate in promoting M!LK, reaction spread across the Hello! Project board on 5ch. The thread split between doubts that Johnny’s still has that kind of clout left and claims that its old ties to TV network insiders remain deeply entrenched. The discussion also touched on how no Johnny’s-affiliated talent took part in MAJ, a new music award meant to replace the Japan Record Awards, fueling debate over the industry’s shifting balance of power.

"Recently, TV Asahi formed a joint venture with CyberAgent to launch the internet broadcaster AbemaTV, and its dedicated app has been a huge success with 10 million downloads. The person said to be behind this is Genichi Taniguchi, a K Dash Stage executive with deep ties to both TV Asahi and CyberAgent. TV Asahi's policy is to keep some distance from Johnny's while deepening its reliance on K Dash — and that's the backdrop against which talk of SMAP switching agencies emerged."

Background and key points of debate

Behind this story is the fact that the former Johnny & Associates was restructured into STARTO ENTERTAINMENT following the 2023 sexual abuse scandal, and its traditional balance of power with the TV networks has been shifting ever since. Thread opinion split over whether Johnny’s still has enough clout left to pressure other agencies: some pointed to M!LK’s rising profile as evidence the agency’s influence is fading, while others argued that the old-boy network between the agency and TV network producers can’t be severed so easily. Another point of debate was MAJ (Music Awards Japan), reportedly created to replace the Japan Record Awards and do away with the old culture of backroom favoritism — though some see it as nothing more than a ‘new power structure’ led by a different faction of the industry. Worth noting, though not addressed in the original report, is that Bunshun’s story itself rests on anonymous testimony from industry insiders, and the agency has issued no official confirmation or denial.

  • Gas Stations Closing Down Faster Than Ever — 5ch: “The Economy and the Countryside Are Both Finished (lol)”

Kobe International University economics professor Tomohiko Nakamura pointed out in a Yahoo! News expert column that gas station closures are accelerating, leading to a growing number of areas with “no gas station nearby.” The 5ch thread responding to this saw some users lamenting Japan’s slow shift to EVs, while others argued that the real driver of the decline is actually improved fuel efficiency in hybrid vehicles. Posters also discussed the difficulty of installing charging equipment in apartment buildings and the reality of relying on suburban gas stations like Costco, splitting opinion between those pushing for a full switch to EVs and those urging caution given rural realities.

    39AnonymousSep 17, 2026 12:04
I don't even drive so who cares lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry defines areas where a municipality has three or fewer gas stations (SS) as “SS-sparse areas,” and maintaining fuel supply networks in these depopulated areas has long been treated as a policy issue. In the thread, many users pinned the blame for closures on the shift to EVs itself, but in reality EV adoption in Japan remains low, and some pointed out that the real driver is the replacement of gasoline cars with fuel-efficient hybrids — a point on which the thread’s perceptions diverged from the facts. Even when EVs are adopted, challenges remain, such as installing charging equipment in apartment buildings and limited range for long trips, suggesting it isn’t as simple as “switching to EVs solves everything.” The government has also poured in subsidies to offset high gasoline prices, but the thread raised doubts about the profit margins of oil wholesalers and how the subsidies are actually being used, highlighting the tension between price countermeasures and maintaining the distribution network as competing priorities.

The spark was a pricing situation: a limited-run “Ocarina of Time Edition” sold out almost instantly, while the Splatoon Raiders bundle remained on sale at a discount. Some posters noted that “the PS5 controller is outselling the console itself,” but once talk turned to weekly sales figures, a wave of pushback followed — “Switch2 has never once lost to PS5 in weekly sales,” “even when it gets overtaken temporarily on Amazon rank, it’s still won weekly” — and the thread’s whole premise ended up getting called into question.

    Re: #95
Lol, Switch2 was actually the one losing

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Discussion of Japanese console sales trends tends to revolve around two different metrics: real-time rankings on retail sites like Amazon (commonly nicknamed “Amaran,” short for Amazon Ranking), and the weekly unit sales figures (“shuhan”) compiled by outlets like Famitsu and Media Create — and the two often diverge. Amazon rank can swing within hours depending on stock levels or flash sales, while weekly sales, which tally a full week’s worth of sales across retailers, are generally seen as a more stable trend indicator. A June thread cited within this discussion showed data claiming that over one month on Amazon, PS5 had “more than 6,000 units purchased” versus Switch2’s “more than 3,000” — yet posters maintained that Switch2 still came out ahead in weekly sales, reinforcing the recurring point that Amazon rank alone can’t settle which console is actually selling better. Note that this thread did not present concrete weekly sales figures for the most recent week, so the final verdict on which console leads remains unconfirmed within the scope of this thread.

  • Wolverine’s Graphics Get Compared to Ocarina of Time, Sparking Buzz Overseas — 5ch: “Getting Owned by 20-Year-Old Graphics”

A post comparing screenshots of the new action game “Marvel’s Wolverine” with 1998’s “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” and the GameCube version of “Super Mario Sunshine” went viral overseas and sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. Commenters pointed out rough water and lava effects, tree rendering, and character facial animation, and many voiced suspicions about internal changes at developer Insomniac Games as well as doubts about its review scores. The discussion expanded to include Nintendo’s long-standing dedication to water rendering and even practices involving consulting firms in the Western game industry.

Same with the lava steam — the particle effects are used so weirdly it's hard to even tell what's supposed to be happening.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nintendo titles, particularly the “Legend of Zelda” series, have long been praised for their water and lava effects, and that track record was cited repeatedly in this comparison. Meanwhile, “Sweet Baby Inc.,” the name that came up in the thread, is a consulting firm that advises on diversity representation in the Western game industry and has been a polarizing topic among Western gamers since around 2024; posters in this thread also voiced suspicions about its involvement. That said, claims about internal changes or layoffs at developer Insomniac Games remain speculation within the thread and are not confirmed facts. It’s also worth noting that 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board tends to produce skewed takes on specific manufacturers, and impressions can shift depending on how comparison images are cropped or under what conditions they were captured.

  • “I Want a Switch 2, But There’s No Exclusive Software” — Post Sparks Debate on 5ch

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Nanademo Jikkyo G” board (a general live-discussion board) from a poster who feels drawn to the Switch 2 hardware itself but can’t pull the trigger on buying it, because there’s no exclusive software they actually want to play. The poster says that with the original Switch, there were plenty of games they wanted, so buying was a no-brainer — but the Switch 2 has few exclusive titles, and the ¥60,000 price tag is also a sticking point. In the thread, some recommended Elden Ring or the new Pokémon game, but the poster replied that they’re not into gore or Pokémon itself, and opinions split over what would actually tip the scales — faster load times versus how heavy handheld mode is.

    1AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:36

It's impressively all retro games — but if your Switch 1 breaks, couldn't you just buy another Switch 1?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in 2025, and with exclusive software still scarce and the lineup dominated by ports and spin-offs, the thread starter’s dilemma — “the hardware is appealing, but there’s no exclusive software” — is a common worry among prospective buyers. In the thread, opinions split between those who praised the improved processing speed and load times and those who felt the price of ¥60,000 wasn’t justified by such a thin exclusive lineup, and the discussion never really landed on a clear verdict. Plenty of firsthand accounts came up too, covering things like the weight of handheld mode and whether YouTube can be watched on it, but it’s worth noting these are all personal impressions rather than confirmed official specifications. It’s also worth adding that the Switch 2 Lite was discussed in the thread purely on the premise of “who knows if it’ll even come out” — it is not a model that has been officially announced.

According to the Bank of Japan’s flow of funds statistics for April–June 2026, household financial assets reached a record ¥2,519 trillion at the end of June, up 11.0% from a year earlier. Stocks and other equities jumped 47.0% to ¥486 trillion and investment trusts climbed 36.8% to ¥193 trillion, with rising share prices driving the increase. On 5ch, opinions clashed: some argued that only households holding stocks and investment trusts benefit, widening the gap with those who rely solely on wage income, while others pointed out that most of these assets are elderly savings that won’t flow into consumption as-is. The thread was split on whether asset growth driven by higher stock prices can really be called a tangible economic recovery.

According to the Bank of Japan’s preliminary flow of funds statistics for April–June, released on the 17th, household financial assets reached a record ¥2,519 trillion at the end of June, up 11.0% from a year earlier. Rising stock prices pushed up the balance.

Within household financial assets, stocks and other equities rose 47.0% to ¥486 trillion, while investment trusts rose 36.8% to ¥193 trillion.

Amid rising interest rates, purchases of retail government bonds increased, pushing debt securities up 15.5% to ¥38 trillion.

Stocks and investment trusts generate hefty income gains (dividends) and capital gains (from selling), so that money does flow into big-ticket spending.

The real problem is the widening gap with people who have only wage income and can't touch financial assets!
    6AnonymousSep 17, 2026 10:19
So basically, if everyone spent almost all their income the way people at the bottom do, you'd get an economic boost equal to 20 years' worth of the national budget.

Now it's crystal clear who's actually cooling the economy down and who's dead weight on the nation.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Bank of Japan’s flow of funds statistics tally the financial assets and liabilities of households, businesses, government, and other sectors every quarter, and this quarter’s ¥2,519 trillion is a new record. Looking at the breakdown, though, stocks and investment trusts alone rose roughly 40% year-on-year, meaning most of the growth reflects valuation gains from higher share prices rather than fresh saving. Japanese households still keep a large share of their assets in cash and deposits, so gains like these tend to be concentrated among people who actually hold stocks or investment trusts, making them hard to feel for households living on wage income alone. It’s also easy to overlook that in a weak-yen environment, the yen value of foreign-currency assets balloons too, so a statistical increase doesn’t necessarily mean real purchasing power has risen. The fact that financial assets are concentrated among the elderly and don’t easily flow into consumption is a point that’s been raised before, and it was exactly where opinion split in this thread as well.

  • When You Split the Bill Evenly But Your Friend Orders Everything: The “Ugh” Feeling Goes Viral

A personal experience shared on Maidona News has struck a nerve: after going out to eat with a friend, one person clearly ate and drank far more, yet still insisted on splitting the bill evenly — leaving the other person quietly annoyed. With a large group, nobody would think twice about it, but with just two people, the imbalance becomes impossible to ignore. The story drew a huge response on 5channel’s News Express+ board, where opinions clashed between “obviously whoever drank more should pay more” and “when you’re sharing big plates of food, doing separate checks just isn’t realistic” — sparking a broader debate over what counts as a fair way to split a bill.

“Split the bill” even though the other person ate and drank more → Wouldn’t care with a big group, but with just two of us… it’s just irritating. “Of course I’d want them to pay more,” “I wouldn’t want to go out with someone like that”

Actually, that exact topic came up recently. From my college days when I started drinking through to now as a working adult, at pretty much every drinking party I've been to — outside of all-you-can-drink deals — whoever drinks more pays more. That's just been the norm everywhere I've gone. Everyone I talked to agreed, but apparently back in the Showa era, even if some people were guzzling booze, everyone just split it evenly. The gap in mentality freaked me out.

    166AnonymousSep 17, 2026 09:38
    Re: #153
    Depends on the amount.

Among my friends, if the bill's around 12,000 yen, someone might say 'you can just give me 5,000' and cover the other 7,000 themselves.

    But when it's obviously a 7:3 split in the other person's favor… that's a bit much.
    169AnonymousSep 17, 2026 09:41

I see, so in the Showa era splitting evenly was normal because everyone drank. These days, I seriously never hear of non-drinkers paying the same amount. Whether it's a big group or a small one, it's standard for non-drinkers to at least pay 1,000 yen less.

    191AnonymousSep 17, 2026 09:49
    Re: #185
Nah, plenty of people do offer to pay more. It depends on the balance.

Background and key points of the debate

Differing feelings about splitting the bill tend to come down to whether people assume an “even split” or one weighted by how much each person actually ate and drank. That mismatch in assumptions was a big source of friction in the thread — when some argued “just do separate checks,” others pushed back that at izakayas, where set courses and shared big plates are the norm, precise individual billing simply isn’t practical. Others pointed to generational differences: back when nearly everyone drank, splitting evenly felt natural, but now that more people don’t drink or drink only a little, paying “more if you drank more” is becoming the more common approach — several posters shared personal experience backing this up. It’s worth noting the original article is based on one poster’s personal experience and isn’t presenting a definitive “right answer” for how to split a bill. Several comments also hint that even when people are unhappy about an unequal burden, the dynamics of the relationship can make it hard to speak up in the moment.

Some people were saying it's weird to compare them since they're facing different levels of competition.

Feels like there aren't many great managers who came up as defensive midfielders.
Pirlo, Vieira, Gattuso — none of them can really be called successes.
Xabi Alonso's about the only one I'd say actually succeeded.

National-team duty comes first, so calling him up isn't a problem at all. Itakura's been saying not to call him up, but since national-team call-ups are mandatory, if he hates it that much his only option is to retire from the national team.

Coventry's just not good enough, huh.
I think the reason promoted sides struggle is that, like most lower-table or mid-table teams, they're full of players more interested in showing off for themselves.
    80AnonymousSep 17, 2026 09:42
    Re: #58
The other promoted teams are actually doing pretty well so far this season.
It's only Coventry — who went up as champions — that's been overwhelmingly bad.

    Background and Talking Points

The Carabao Cup (League Cup) is a competition where bigger clubs typically rotate their squads, and it’s standard for the backup goalkeeper to get the nod too. Opinions split over whether Zion Suzuki is Villa’s “first-choice keeper” because of two competing facts: he’s started essentially every league match except the opener, while using a backup keeper in cup competitions is standard practice. As for the comments about an Asian Cup call-up, that reflects a real, recurring conflict in professional football — international call-ups are binding under FIFA’s international match regulations, while clubs want to avoid the injury risk to their key players. The reading of “彩艶” (“Satsuya”) keeps coming up in threads simply because it’s such an unusual name. Also, Coventry’s “five straight losses to Premier League sides this season” as a promoted side comes straight from the source article’s own figures, illustrating that even a team promoted as champions still faces a big gap in quality against the tier above.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Sokuhou+) thread “[Football] Tatsuhiro Sakamoto Starts & GK Zion Suzuki Called Up in Emergency! Aston Villa Win as Abraham Nets a Brace — Coventry Fall to Their 5th Straight Loss to Premier League Sides This Season.”

  • Elementary School Truancy: ‘20,000 in 2004 → 140,000 in 2024’ Sparks Debate on 5ch

Around the time of the 2004 curriculum guideline revision, the old term “school refusal” (登校拒否) gave way to “non-attendance” (不登校), and not going to school came to be treated as a choice the child is entitled to make. On 5ch, users picked up on this policy shift and noted that the number of truant elementary schoolers has climbed from roughly 20,000 in 2004 to around 140,000 in 2024, sparking a thread. Some argued this mirrors the Children and Families Agency’s “Children First” policy, while others countered that respecting a child’s will is barely distinguishable from neglecting their education. Opinions split hardest over just how much paternalism should be tolerated.

    Re: #8
This truancy philosophy is exactly the Children and Families Agency's "Children First" policy.

The idea is to respect the child's own will instead of imposing adult opinions on them — to honor a child's choice not to go to school.
    9AnonymousSep 17, 2026 08:06
Up until around 2004, it was called "school refusal" (登校拒否), a term coined by psychiatrists — the idea being it's a mental-health issue, not something to be ashamed of. Schools were kept busy just caring for these kids.

After the 2004 curriculum guideline revision, the term changed to "non-attendance" (不登校). Whether or not to go to school became the child's own personal choice, and the freedom not to attend was recognized. To respect the child's choice, schools were no longer required to take any special action.

That's the difference, by the way.

Honestly, I don't hate this way of thinking. There are ways to enjoy life besides the "go to school" route.

    23AnonymousSep 17, 2026 08:16
Why is it wrong to impose adult opinions on kids?
Kids can't judge for themselves, right?
They'll just drift toward whatever's easiest.
Isn't it the adult's job to correct that?
In the end, it's for the kid's own good.
    43AnonymousSep 17, 2026 08:22
    Re: #23
You can't know that without understanding why they stopped attending in the first place.
Assuming "they just want to take it easy" is its own kind of snap judgment.
If a kid is being bullied and doesn't want to go, and you just yell "get in there, go go go!!" regardless, you're setting them up for the worst possible outcome.
That's why the basic principle in education theory is: fix the root cause, don't just force compliance.
    46AnonymousSep 17, 2026 08:23
    Re: #43
In that case, isn't it the adult's job to get them to school somehow — switch classes, transfer schools, whatever it takes?

    30AnonymousSep 17, 2026 08:19
If the kid themselves chose not to go to school of their own will, that should be fine, shouldn't it?
If it ends in failure, that's on them too.

It's not anyone else's place to butt in.
    35AnonymousSep 17, 2026 08:20

And it's fine if that just mass-produces welfare cases? ("namapo" = slang for welfare/public assistance)
    33AnonymousSep 17, 2026 08:20
Persuading the kid should be the parents' job alone.
No matter how much some other adult claims to say it "for the kid's sake," butting in like that isn't right.

If the child chooses not to attend school,
and the parents talked it over with the child and decided together, there's no room for outsiders to step in.

That's exactly why I'm saying it's fundamentally wrong.

It comes down to which is better: this, or the Showa-era way (Japan's pre-1989 era, evoking old-school strictness) — where a teacher shows up at your house, decks you, and drags you to school by force.

Has anyone even checked whether that's actually happening?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The shift from “school refusal” to “non-attendance” overlapped with the 2004 revision of Japan’s curriculum guidelines, a period when treating school absence as the child’s own choice — rather than a symptom of mental illness — gained momentum. What split opinion in the thread boils down to a single question: is this “respect for the child’s will” a form of support for their growth, or an abdication of adult responsibility? It’s striking that the word “paternalism” gets used with opposite connotations depending on which side is arguing. Worth noting, as a premise the thread itself never addressed: real-world truancy is tied to multiple factors — bullying, home environment, developmental traits, and more — so reducing the rise in numbers to nothing but a change in terminology or policy would be jumping to conclusions.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyō G) thread “[Sad News] Elementary school truancy: 20,000 in 2004 ← yikes, 140,000 in 2024 ← wait, WHAT?!“
