  • Former Morning Musume. Member Marai Makino to Throw First Pitch at Farm-League Game on the 21st

It’s been revealed that former Morning Musume. member Marai Makino will throw the ceremonial first pitch at the official farm-league game between the Nippon-Ham Fighters and the Yomiuri Giants, held September 21 at Kamagaya Stadium. Makino commented, “Keeping the words of my beloved Shinjo-tsuutan close to my heart, I’m going to enjoy this to the fullest.” On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, discussion centered on reactions to the former top idol appearing at a farm-team game rather than the majors, concerns over whether the approaching typhoon would force a cancellation, and how cheap the tickets are. Commenters also brought up the news that fellow Hello! Project alum Rio Kitagawa had been tapped as a newscaster for an economics program, drawing comparisons between the different career paths members have taken after graduating.

“Keeping the words of my beloved Shinjo-tsuutan close to my heart, I’m going to enjoy this to the fullest.”

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “farm league” referred to here is a separate set of official games from the top-team schedule, made up mainly of second-string and developmental players; first pitches at these games generally draw far less attention and fanfare than those at top-team games. Since graduating from Morning Musume., Makino has continued her entertainment career under the direction of her talent agency, Up-Front Create, and some in the thread speculated that her appearance might be tied to a personal connection with the team’s club president. It’s easy to overlook that throwing a ceremonial first pitch is a job entertainers are routinely asked to do, and being booked for a farm-team game doesn’t necessarily reflect directly on someone’s popularity. The thread also mentions that the Fighters’ farm-team home base is expected to eventually move from Kamagaya — but that’s a claim made by a poster and hasn’t been independently verified for this article. Whether the game would go ahead as scheduled given the approaching typhoon was also still undetermined at the time of writing, so readers should check separately for the latest status.

  • Ex-A.B.C-Z’s Ikuto Kawai and voice actress Moe Toyota dating for 4.5 years — 5ch reacts: “Might as well disband” (lol)

FRIDAY has reported, citing sightings from mid-September, that former A.B.C-Z member Ikuto Kawai (38) and voice actress Moe Toyota (31) have been dating for four and a half years. When asked about marriage, Toyota reportedly answered in a small voice, “Not yet…”. On 5ch, the first wave of comments questioned who Toyota even was (“Who’s Moe Toyota?”), highlighting a gap between the general reaction and that of voice-actor fans who recognized her roles. Some posts also brought up how rarely Kawai himself has appeared on TV lately.

He had reportedly told those around him, “I have a girlfriend.”

When a FRIDAY reporter asked Toyota about marriage, she answered quietly, “Not yet…”

It was just before 7 a.m. in mid-September. From an apartment building in a central Tokyo neighborhood where lush greenery meets old-town charm, a man radiating overwhelming charisma emerged.

Is Moe Kirimura the more famous one?

    Background and talking points

The Johnny’s agency Kawai belonged to was restructured into STARTO ENTERTAINMENT in 2023 after the sexual abuse scandal involving the agency’s late founder came to light, and TV has generally found agency-related topics awkward to touch since then. Kawai himself used to do an impression of the agency’s late founder as part of his comedy routine, which is part of the backstory behind comments noting his reduced TV exposure. Moe Toyota, meanwhile, is a voice actress known for roles like Sapphire Kawashima in Sound! Euphonium, and she also does idol-style activities. On the thread, reactions split sharply between people who had no idea who Toyota was and anime fans who recognized her roles. Neither the article nor the thread reveals how the relationship began, and it’s worth noting that FRIDAY’s report is based on sightings near Kawai’s apartment, with no official comment reported from either party.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “[SCOOP!] Former A.B.C-Z’s Ikuto Kawai (38) & voice actress Moe Toyota (31) caught in “4.5-year serious relationship” [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Voice Actress Megumi Ogata Says ‘I Was the Original Yu-Gi-Oh!’ — Unease Over Coverage Sparks Divided Reactions on 5ch

Voice actress Megumi Ogata revealed her complicated feelings on X (formerly Twitter) on September 16th regarding certain media coverage of “Yu-Gi-Oh!”. After a special animation released on the 14th to commemorate creator Kazuki Takahashi’s original art exhibition was introduced as the “original” Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, Ogata posted: “I thought I was supposed to be the ‘original’… I wonder how many people even remember that. I guess that’s not how people see it now. It’s lonely.” The post sparked a wave of reactions on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board — some sympathized, saying “anyone would react the same way if their own career got erased,” while others were harsher, saying things like “just do your best on the new recording” or “it would’ve been classier not to bring it up,” leaving opinions split.

    September 17, 2026, 10:15 AM

Voice actress Megumi Ogata posted on X on the 16th, sharing her personal thoughts on coverage related to the manga “Yu-Gi-Oh!”, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) from 1996 to 2004.

Regarding the series, a special animation began streaming on the 14th to commemorate “Kazuki Takahashi Original Art Exhibition: YU-GI-OH! ART WORKS,” the creator’s first original art exhibition, set to run from December 12th at CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO in Tokyo. After this animation was referred to by some outlets as the “original” Yu-Gi-Oh!, Ogata expressed her complicated feelings, posting: “I thought I was supposed to be the ‘original’… I wonder how many people even remember that. I guess that’s not how people see it now. It’s lonely.”

And countries that obsess over the voice actor's real-life gender, age, or skin color, regardless of whether it actually fits the character, aren't exactly great either.
Like when a boy actor's voice breaks after casting and you end up with a raspy old-man voice coming out of a character who still looks like a kid, or people saying 'don't cast a white actor for a Black character.'

Background and Key Points of This Topic

There are two animated adaptations of “Yu-Gi-Oh!”: the 1998 Toei Animation version, in which Ogata voiced the protagonist, and the Tokyo TV version that aired from 2000 onward starring Shunsuke Kazama, known for the line “It’s my turn!” Because the latter achieved overwhelming name recognition both in Japan and abroad, many fans and media outlets tend to picture the Kazama version when they think of the “original,” and the first animated adaptation that Ogata starred in has rarely been discussed. This post is thought to stem from that gap in perception. On the thread, opinions were split between defenders saying it’s “a natural reaction from someone whose own achievements were ignored” and critics saying “it would have been classier not to mention it” or “reeks of an old-timer’s grumbling,” bringing to the surface differing values around how a career should be acknowledged and how voice actors should be shown respect.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread ‘Voice actress Megumi Ogata explains the real meaning behind her post on certain “Yu-Gi-Oh!” coverage: “I thought I was the original… I guess that’s not how people see it now. It’s lonely.”‘

  • Typhoon Approaches, Casting a Shadow Over ANGERME’s ROCK IN JAPAN Appearance — 5ch: ‘This Group Is Just Too Cursed’

The organizers of ROCK IN JAPAN FES. 2026 have announced that the September 19 (Sat) show will go ahead as planned, judging that the approaching Typhoon No. 25 won’t have a major impact. ANGERME is set to perform in Soga on September 21 (Mon, holiday), and whether the shows on the 20th and 21st proceed will be decided later depending on the typhoon’s path. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, the group’s long-running reputation for being “cursed” — a running joke every time bad weather rolls in — resurfaced in force, with posters comparing them to labelmates Juice=Juice, who have historically dodged bad weather at outdoor events on the same dates, and debating which outcome — the show going ahead or getting canceled — would make funnier material.

Regarding the go/no-go decision for September 19 (Sat), and the decision process for September 20 (Sun) and 21 (Mon, holiday)

Regarding Typhoon No. 25, which formed at 9pm last night: current forecasts indicate no major impact is expected on September 19 (Sat), so that show will proceed as scheduled.

The Game Show on the 21st might be a no-go too
Guess even the legendary weather-dodging streak has hit its 'Owari' (the end — a pun on the place name Owari-Ichinomiya)

Background and Key Points of This Topic

ROCK IN JAPAN FES. is a major annual outdoor rock festival held every September at Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki Prefecture, and in bad weather the organizers have a policy of announcing go/no-go decisions day by day, from the day before through the day of. What was announced this time was only the decision to proceed on the 19th; the 21st, the day ANGERME is scheduled to perform, remains to be decided depending on the typhoon’s path. The thread title’s “maybe canceled” reflects speculation at the time the thread was created, not confirmed information — worth keeping in mind. Within the thread, posters frequently poked fun at each group’s “luck,” citing labelmates Juice=Juice, also part of Hello! Project, having dodged bad weather at past outdoor events. There was also plenty of back-and-forth using fans’ nicknames for each other, and some of what’s said is unverified rumor, so this should be read simply as a snapshot of reactions on 5ch.

*This article is compiled as excerpts and a summary from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Bad News] ANGERME’s Rock In Japan Might Be Canceled wwwwwwwwwww“.

  • Liking Fried Horse Mackerel Makes You an Old Man? Some on 5ch Say It Beats Fried Chicken

On the ABC TV late-night show “Kore Yodan Nan Desu Kedo…” (“This Is a Bit of a Tangent, But…”), comedians in their 40s and 50s discussed “things that make you feel like an old man,” and a preference for fried horse mackerel (aji fry) came up as a prime example. The segment was sparked by a survey showing a gap between the “image of an old man” held by people in their 40s and 50s and the one held by younger generations. Picking up on this, 5ch lit up with users sharing their own experiences — whether they’re drawn to fried chicken or to aji/iwashi fry, tartar sauce versus ponzu, no longer being able to stomach fried food at all, or conversely finally being able to appreciate the taste of fish — turning into a lively discussion about how taste and physical condition change with age.

Ken Hayashi (48) of the comedy duo Gallop, along with comedians Shinji Mizuta (46) and Oidayasu Oda (48), appeared on ABC TV’s “Kore Yodan Nan Desu Kedo…” (airing Wednesdays at 11:16 PM) on the 16th. The show got lively discussing “relatable moments that make you feel like an old man.”

The topic of “things that make me feel like an old man” came up after the show featured a survey highlighting a gap between the real “old man generation” in their 40s and 50s and the “image of an old man” held by the younger generation.

When I made it at home, the oil content was high and the breading kept falling off

Background and key points of this discussion

This topic originated from an ABC TV late-night show: after a survey revealed a gap between the “image of an old man” held by people in their 40s-50s and the one held by younger generations, comedians began sharing their own experiences, and that’s how it started. Note that aji fry (fried horse mackerel) is by no means a cheap fish dish — it’s actually discussed as a set-meal staple on par with fried chicken, so it’s easy to misread this as a simple “fried fish = lowly food” equation. The thread split roughly into two camps: one about how fried food itself has started to take a toll on the body — age-related indigestion and lower tolerance for oil — and the other about a shift in taste, with people saying they can now appreciate fish flavors they disliked as kids. These aren’t necessarily the same underlying reason. There were also comments noting that “the quality of frozen aji fry has improved lately,” adding another factor — rising quality in restaurant and prepared-food offerings — into the mix.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Does liking aji fry make you an old man? ‘It’s better than fried chicken,’ ‘Torn between aji fry and iwashi fry’ — comedians in their 40s get fired up over relatable moments.”

  • Sony’s New Ad Echoes Switch’s ‘Anytime, Anywhere’ Slogan — Tiny ‘WiFi Required’ Disclaimer Sparks Debate

A thread blew up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board over a new Sony commercial. Its catchphrase, “Anytime, anywhere,” echoes Nintendo Switch’s own tagline, “Anytime, anywhere, with anyone.” But tucked in the corner of the screen is a tiny disclaimer: “WiFi required.” Posters clashed over whether the disclaimer’s tiny font size amounts to a “scam ad,” while others countered that with a pocket WiFi router or a 5G connection it actually works fine — sparking a broader debate about connection quality and lag.

The Switch's concept is "Anytime, anywhere, with anyone."

Sony couldn't rip off the local co-op sharing part, so theirs is "Anytime, anywhere, alone."
    28AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:45
    I mean come on—
it's not standalone, so how can you play it "anytime, anywhere"?
Are we supposed to keep a pocket WiFi router glued to our body at all times?
And even then, I hear the lag outside is so bad it's unplayable.

Even with a solid connection, video streaming works totally fine (since it can buffer).
But anything that needs real responsiveness turns to garbage instantly because of latency and packet loss.
In other words, mobile data is a non-starter for remote play.

If that were actually solved, you wouldn't get that awkward delay when a TV anchor talks to a remote correspondent.

    105AnonymousSep 17, 2026 16:07
    Re: #99
Are you still stuck on that fantasy?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Since its 2017 launch, the Nintendo Switch has held “Anytime, anywhere, with anyone” as its unifying concept, with portability — the ability to play complete games on the console alone — as its core selling point. Sony’s products, by contrast, largely depend on remote play or cloud streaming, which tends to require a connection once you step outside the house. The thread’s dispute centered on two points: first, that the ad’s slogan echoes the Switch’s own wording, and second, that the actual condition of use — “WiFi required” — is displayed in text far smaller than the main copy. The former is really just a similarity in advertising phrasing, and the latter is a fairly standard convention for fine-print disclaimers across the industry, so calling it outright “fraud” may be overstating it. Opinions were also split on how necessary a pocket WiFi router really is and how usable a 5G connection is in practice, since the experience varies a lot depending on one’s carrier plan and location.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Pekomogu Kitchen” is one of TV Tokyo’s regular/special programming slots that leans heavily on idol guests, and as reply #105 notes, the show’s reputation as a network that “gives idols a lot of chances” has long circulated among Hello! Project and AKB48 fans. What drew attention this time wasn’t the matchup itself so much as the role of announcer Kitagawa Rio as host. As reply #13 points out, there had reportedly been a rumor among fans that Announcer Kitagawa “couldn’t appear alongside Hello! Project” — her actually being billed on the same show as Juice=Juice’s Ishiyama Sakura contradicted that rumor, which is what sparked the thread’s reaction. Since that backstory isn’t in the show’s official summary, it can look like a plain appearance announcement at first glance, but this contradiction is really the core of the thread’s excitement. Meanwhile, the “Is AKB the B-team?” comments in replies #7 and #72 aren’t a judgment on Sakagawa’s own ability — they reflect fan frustration with AKB48’s overall media exposure and how the group’s unit projects have been handled in recent years, and should be read separately from any assessment of Sakagawa as an individual.

  • Panther’s Satoshi Mukai and TBS Announcer Yuko Wakabayashi Reported to Be Living Together — 5ch Asks: ‘Wait, Did She Break Up With the Mario Guy?’

FRIDAY magazine has scooped a “secret cohabitation romance” between comedy trio Panther’s Satoshi Mukai (40) and TBS announcer Yuko Wakabayashi. This is Wakabayashi’s second romance scoop, following a 2022 report that she was semi-cohabiting with an elite IT company employee. The 5ch thread kicked off with people asking which shows Wakabayashi even appears on, then spiraled into discussion of Mukai’s education, career history, rumored thinning hair, and comedian earnings — with posters showing more interest in picking apart Mukai’s character than in the romance itself.

After riding together in the car and enjoying dinner at a yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) spot favored by celebrities, the pair headed back to the “love nest” they share—

Before anyone quite noticed, these two TV favorites had leveled up from “co-stars” to “couple”—

On a weekday night in mid-September, around 9 p.m., Satoshi Mukai (40) of comedy trio Panther emerged from a no-frills yakiniku restaurant in Tokyo. He’s plugged this particular spot as one of his regular haunts on TBS shows like “Besukon Gourmet” and “Sakurai & Aritoshi THE Yakai,” and it’s known as a favorite among other comedians too, including Sisonne’s Shinobu Hasegawa (48) and Kirin’s Akira Kawashima (47). Mukai kept it ultra-casual — a purple-blue check shirt, black pants, and a cap, with nothing in hand but his wallet and phone. Just a guy treating himself to a solo meal at his favorite place after work, perhaps?

Background and Key Points of This Story

FRIDAY-style romance scoops typically follow a set formula: solo-camera shots of a couple coming and going from each other’s homes. This marks the second time Yuko Wakabayashi has been featured this way, following the 2022 report about her semi-cohabiting relationship with an elite IT company employee. Reaction on 5ch centered less on the relationship itself and more on Satoshi Mukai — his selection as an outstanding student in Nagoya, his graduation from Meiji University’s School of Political Science and Economics, his apparent thinning hair, and his history of co-starring on late-night shows all came up one after another. While some comments were congratulatory, what stood out in this thread was how much more energy went into evaluating Mukai’s looks and personality than into the romance news itself — making it less a straightforward celebratory story and more a read on how 5ch users currently view Satoshi Mukai as a public figure.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “[Scoop!] Panther’s Satoshi Mukai ♡ TBS Announcer Yuko Wakabayashi’s “Secret Cohabitation Romance” Caught on Camera! [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Juice=Juice’s Average Height Is “162.1cm” — 5ch: “They’re Just Padding the Numbers”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Hello! Project board claiming Juice=Juice members average 162.1cm in height. Figures cited included Danbara Ruru at 164.5cm, Inoue Reon at 163cm, and Kudo Yua at 160.2cm — but since none of this is official, skeptics chimed in with “they’re just padding the numbers” and “it’s probably 1–2cm shorter in reality.” The thread also brought up a CanCam interview in which Ishiyama Sakura said the group’s “height and great proportions give them real stage presence,” underscoring how the tall-lineup strategy has become one of the group’s selling points. Discussion spread into comparisons with Korean idols’ heights and speculation about who’ll graduate next.

CanCam Exclusive Interview [Juice=Juice's Ishiyama Sakura & Endo Sakari]
    https://cancam.jp/archives/1759787

    Q. If fans come to a Juice=Juice live show, what should they watch for — in the group as a whole, in you, and in each other?

Sakura: For the group as a whole, honestly, every part of the performance. It's not just that the singing is good — we've got so many seniors who are insanely good singers, so I just want people to simply enjoy the music. And because everyone's tall with great proportions, there's a real power to it — when all 11 of us line up side by side, the impact is just incredible. I really want people to pay attention to that.

They're succeeding with the tall-member strategy, so short members aren't getting in anymore

Age-wise, Danbara and Inoue are probably next to graduate, so the average height will drop.
If they force in tall replacements, the singing ability will definitely take a hit.

Juice is actually in a tricky spot right now.

Ikuta went all the way to 28, so there's precedent for staying that long.

    24AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:07
If you recruit based on skill, you inevitably end up with more short members.
If you recruit tall members for their looks, the singing tends to be pretty average.

Girls who are both tall and great singers are super rare, and there's not much reason for that kind of talent to bother joining Hello! Project anyway.

    Average age doesn't matter here.
For a group with member turnover, what matters is the age of the oldest members.
Danbara and Inoue are next up to graduate.
    35AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:14
Because of everyone around them, Eba-Mifu end up looking small by comparison.
    37AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:15
A little worried there might be a surprise graduation announcement at the venue on tour day one, like what happened with Hashisako — 9/18, Atsugi.
    38AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:15
But when you consider Nagano is 163cm, it doesn't really seem like that big a deal.

Kudo, Irie, Kawashima, Ebata, Arisawa — those are the ones worth supporting.
    41AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:17
Still nowhere close to Berryz Koubou though.
    43AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:19
On Music Letters, Rei-Rei apparently said that "Niina cried her eyes out over not being able to appear on Music Station" and that she'd "keep Juice going until Niina turns 18" — does that mean she's planning to stick around another three years? Guess that's the convenient interpretation, anyway.
    45AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:19
4th- and 5th-gen K-pop chased looks and nothing else, and that's exactly why male fans stopped showing up and it became unpopular content.
Juice isn't just about looks — they've got real skill and charm too.
    Of course Juice wins.

Guess Ikuta was just the outlier.
    53AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:28
I get that they're recruiting for looks, but it's come at the cost of weaker high notes.
The original members' songs are all high-pitched, so they need someone strong in the high register.
    66AnonymousSep 17, 2026 15:43
    Re: #53
Hayashi and Kawashima are both strong in the high notes though. Kawashima's even good enough to be given high-note parts.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The height figures cited in the thread aren’t from any official announcement — they appear to be a patchwork of numbers pulled together from individual members’ own blog posts and similar sources. Indeed, members like Arisawa Ichika and Irie Risa have posted their health-checkup heights on their personal Ameba blogs, and it’s likely these scattered bits of information were combined to arrive at the “average of 162.1cm” figure. In recent years, Hello! Project’s push to assemble taller lineups has been a recurring talking point, and this thread was no exception, with posters comparing the numbers to Korean idol groups (whose averages run in the mid-160cm range). At the same time, some pointed out that prioritizing height can come at the expense of vocal ability, so this isn’t really something that can be settled by numbers alone. Worth keeping in mind that this is an unofficial, fan-compiled tally rather than anything official.

  • Tokai Onair’s economic impact on Okazaki City: ¥36.91 billion over 10 years

Tokai Onair, a YouTuber group under UUUM based in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, has had its economic impact on the city estimated at ¥36.91 billion over 10 years, based on a survey conducted in April and May 2026. Member Tetsuya reacted, “That’s an incredibly incredible number!” On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ thread, many commenters questioned the calculation method itself, pointing out the shakiness of estimates based on input-output tables and the failure to separate this figure from the tourism boost from the NHK taiga drama “Dōsuru Ieyasu” (What Will You Do, Ieyasu?) — while others noted that local restaurants really do see lines of visitors from outside the prefecture.

Survey period: April 3–7, May 11–29

The fact that they say it themselves is peak YouTuber.
    12AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:05
Pretty cool that they didn't just up and move to Tokyo.
Even got his idol wife to relocate to the area too.

Don't be fooled by these bogus 'economic impact' numbers.

Isn't this the biggest achievement since Hideyoshi and Ieyasu?
    18AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:11
Now that you mention it, I've heard the name but never actually watched them.
    19AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:12
Raking in cash yet all of them still stick around Okazaki — respect.
    21AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:15
Amanocchi, who's from Okazaki, was in the taiga drama as the 'Okazaki rep.'
    For the 50-and-up crowd,
he's more of a TV guy than a YouTuber.
    23AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:21
Meanwhile the actual citizens are all living paycheck to paycheck.
    26AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:24
    That much seems plausible, honestly.

There's a lot of pilgrimage tourism,
plus whatever boost comes from the place name getting media exposure.
    27AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:26
Matsujun visited Okazaki on Tsurube's walking-tour show to help promote the taiga drama, but the young people there were only there for the Tokai Onair pilgrimage spots and gave him the cold shoulder — he looked pretty hurt about it.
    28AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:27
    Never watched them once,
and I have no idea who's actually a fan.
Same deal as HIKAKIN (another huge Japanese YouTuber everyone's heard of but nobody seems to watch).
    29AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:31
Paying taxes locally — that's great, good for them.
    30AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:31
    Never watched them myself,
but for a place like Okazaki, which is kind of unremarkable especially to younger people, they're probably a welcome presence.
    31AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:34
Whoa, that's basically godlike! I'm losing it! (slang for being thrilled/turned on)
    33AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:41
Used to watch the one where if you fall asleep you get sent straight home.
    They still doing that series?

    Re: #33
Pretty sure they only did it once a few years back and haven't done it again in like 4 years.
Would be funny if they brought Hori Daisuke onto that one.
    34AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:42
Roughly ¥10 million a day? Feels like a pretty sloppy estimate.
    42AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:49
    Re: #34
Well, 'economic ripple effect' as a metric is sloppy to begin with…
If it were net new spending, that'd be a different story.
    38AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:43
Can we just stop with these 'economic impact' numbers already?
Did this actually improve Okazaki's finances?
Did that ¥36.91 billion really come without spending a single yen?
And where did that ¥36.9 billion even come from?
    40AnonymousSep 17, 2026 13:48
    Re: #38
If a collab lunch set sells for ¥1,000, that counts as ¥1,000 of 'economic impact.'
They don't factor in that people probably skipped their usual lunch to buy it instead.
    52AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:03
I have zero interest in them, but are they really contributing that much?
They're just a bunch of amateurs.
    71AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:30
    Re: #52
You claim no interest, yet you sure know a lot about them.
    53AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:04
People love throwing around 'economic impact,'
but I'd like actual sales and profit figures.
What was the projected economic impact before the Tokyo Olympics again?
It ended up a huge deficit in the end, COVID included.
    55AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:05
    Re: #53
This used to be treated as a running joke, like Professor Miyamoto's estimates for Hanshin Tigers fans,
but somewhere along the way everyone started taking it way too seriously.
    56AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:10
I'm an Okazaki resident, and yeah, the shops this group promotes really do get lines of people — probably from out of prefecture.
Back when 'Dōsuru Ieyasu' was airing, it felt like just as many tourists were coming to Okazaki for this group as for the taiga drama.
Not that I have any interest in the group myself.
    63AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:20
    Re: #56
Places like Manpukuya have lines every day.
That whole area is packed with young people.
    65AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:24
    Re: #56
Well, the thing is 'economic ripple effect' probably lumps in the taiga-drama tourist numbers too, so it's kind of murky.
    80AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:43
Impressive that they're still pulling in revenue.
Feels like view counts are down across the board these days.
Countless knockoffs of these guys have popped up.
There were groups where everyone wore their own color-coded outfits,
    but they've all disappeared, huh.
    86AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:57
    Re: #80
Well, these guys are basically old-guard veterans, second only to Fischer's.
I have no clue about all these Shorts creators aimed at overseas audiences that popped up lately.
    81AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:43
    What's the conversion method here?
Just the money spent by people who traveled to Okazaki for Tokai Onair, ate out, stayed overnight, and bought souvenirs?
    83AnonymousSep 17, 2026 14:52
    Re: #81
"Many fans visit our city on pilgrimages, and we've even seen young people move here or take jobs here because of them —
our city's contribution is so remarkable that a figure like ¥36.91 billion doesn't even come as a surprise."

Background and key points of this discussion

An “economic ripple effect” is an estimate that municipalities and events typically produce through commissioned studies, using an input-output table to add a chain of related transactions (indirect effects) on top of the direct effect. As pointed out in the thread, such figures tend to come out inflated because they can’t cleanly exclude substitution effects (spending simply shifted from elsewhere) or overlap with pre-existing tourism demand — a point economists have long criticized. The economic-impact estimates published by Professor Katsuhiro Miyamoto (formerly of Kindai University) for various booms are especially famous, and online they’re often treated as something of a running joke. Tokai Onair is one of Japan’s biggest YouTuber groups, formed in Okazaki City in 2013, notable for the fact that its members have stayed based in their hometown rather than relocating to Tokyo. This survey period also overlapped with tourism driven by the NHK taiga drama “Dōsuru Ieyasu” (What Will You Do, Ieyasu?), making it difficult to cleanly separate the two effects.
