  • SoftBank clinches title No. 3 in a row, sweeping Orix 3-0 in their head-to-head series — 5ch: “A three-peat starting from year one as manager is incredible”

On September 17, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks beat Orix 7-1 to clinch their third straight Pacific League pennant. For Orix, it was a bitter way to see the title decided — swept 3-0 in the head-to-head series against the champions. On 5ch threads, users noted that the on-field celebration felt more subdued than in past years, and discussion turned to manager Hiroki Kokubo pulling off three consecutive league titles starting from his very first year in charge. Posters also recalled past managers who achieved a three-peat starting from year one, name-checking Seibu’s Watari Mori and Orix’s Hiroshi Nakajima, sparking some nostalgic trips through baseball history.

It's been obvious for a while now that it was just a matter of when they'd clinch, so the title itself wasn't a surprise

    Background and talking points

SoftBank’s pennant win on this day appears to have been all but decided well in advance in the Pacific League standings, which seems to be behind the repeated comments about the celebration feeling “muted” — it had the air of a game played out after the race was already settled. There is also precedent for a manager winning three straight league titles starting from his first year in charge: Seibu’s Watari Mori and Orix’s Hiroshi Nakajima (though some point out Nakajima’s run effectively started from his second year), and Kokubo’s three-peat is being discussed as the latest addition to that list. The thread also included comments pointing to gaps in team payroll and passing references to sign-stealing suspicions, though none of these came with concrete evidence, and this article does not treat them as established fact. On the muted celebrations, posters also noted a temperature difference between Fukuoka and other regions in how the title win was received — a good illustration of how differently pennant-clinching news lands depending on where you’re watching from.

  • Hideo Kojima Makes Surprise Appearance at XBOX Fanfest Tokyo, Unveils New Visuals for PHYSINT

Director Hideo Kojima made a surprise appearance at XBOX Fanfest Tokyo, and new visuals along with additional cast members for his upcoming title “PHYSINT” were revealed on X (formerly Twitter). On the 5ch “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board, opinions were divided: some were frustrated that no actual gameplay footage was shown, with the reveal limited to live-action visuals and cast announcements; others debated the merits of using live-action actors as a directing technique; and still others speculated about Xbox’s exclusivity strategy and the rollout of the Switch 2.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

As background to this thread: there had previously been talk of a partnership between Kojima Productions and Xbox, and with the outcome of that still unclear, his appearance at XBOX Fanfest Tokyo left many wondering “why is he standing on an Xbox stage now?” — and that confusion became the starting point for the discussion. The debate largely split into two focal points. One was how the new title “PHYSINT” was presented, with frustration that the reveal centered on live-action visuals and cast announcements while no actual gameplay footage was shown. The other was speculation over whether future development would be centered on Xbox or PlayStation. Opinions on the use of live-action actors were also split, with some welcoming it as an extension of the directing style honed in the “Metal Gear Solid” series, and others viewing it as an avoidance of creating original characters. The long development time, a byproduct of the project’s large scale, was also a topic of discussion, with the lack of further updates feeding the unease.

  • J.League’s ¥4.5 Billion Deficit Was Planned Investment — 5ch: ‘They Tapped Into ¥12.4 Billion in Reserves’

On the 17th, the J.League announced its financial results for the fiscal period ending June 2026 (an irregular half-year covering January–June), reporting ordinary revenue of ¥17.249 billion against ordinary expenses of ¥21.817 billion, for a deficit of ¥4.5768 billion. Under the ‘principle of medium-term financial balance’ required of public-interest incorporated associations, the league says it drew down roughly ¥12.4 billion in accumulated cash reserves for its ‘largest-ever planned advance investment,’ funding fan-expansion measures and subsidies for clubs in snowy regions. On 5ch, reactions to the deficit split between posters explaining and defending the accounting rules unique to public-interest corporations, and others mixing in jabs at baseball fans to make light of it.

On the 17th, the J.League reported its financial results for the fiscal period ending June 2026 (an irregular half-year running January to June) at its general members’ meeting, posting a deficit of ¥4.5768 billion. Ordinary revenue came to ¥17.249 billion, against ordinary expenses of ¥21.817 billion.

In line with the ‘principle of medium-term financial balance’ required of public-interest incorporated associations, the J.League carried out advance investment by making effective use of roughly ¥12.4 billion in cash reserves built up from past operations. It designated the 18 months from the fiscal period ending June 2026 through the one ending June 2027 as a concentrated investment period, pushing forward its largest-ever planned investment, including fan-expansion measures and subsidies for clubs in snowy regions.

    6AnonymousSep 17, 2026 20:10
This is just the 'medium-term financial balance principle' under the Public Interest Corporation Certification Act, plain and simple.

When a public-interest corporation posts a surplus, it has to resolve it in a later fiscal year — they just did that this time, per the rule.

    Public Interest Corporation Certification Act
    Principle of medium-term financial balance
    ◆ Handling of surpluses
・Any surplus must be eliminated in subsequent fiscal years
・Planned use of the funds, such as expanding public-interest programs, is required
・The goal is to prevent excessive accumulation of profit

Worldwide, soccer works by funneling rising revenue back into player, staff, and club salaries. Because of the promotion/relegation system, clubs can't just hoard the money — they bring in good players and keep growing instead. The J.League is now up to nearly 60 players earning over ¥100 million a year, and staff salaries are climbing too. Rising revenue and a healthier economy are starting to show up in exactly this kind of way.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The J.League was certified as a public-interest incorporated association in 2012, and under the Public Interest Corporation Certification Act, surpluses generated from public-interest programs cannot be retained indefinitely. If a surplus builds up for more than five years, the relevant government authority can order corrective action, so accumulated cash reserves must be systematically reinvested into operations to keep the books balanced. This time’s ¥4.5768 billion deficit is the result of applying that accounting rule — a portion of the roughly ¥12.4 billion in cash reserves was funneled into advance investments such as fan-expansion measures and subsidies for clubs in snowy regions — and it’s fundamentally different in nature from a deficit posted by an ordinary company. While posts explaining the system drew a degree of understanding in the thread, there were also plenty of reactions that latched onto the word ‘deficit’ alone and tied it to fears of financial trouble, along with posts that dragged in the rivalry with baseball fans to trade labels back and forth — at times making the board’s characteristic tribalism, rather than the substance of the financial results, the real center of the discussion.

  • Does Math Still Matter in the AI Era? 5ch Users Are Split

A thread titled “Is there any point in learning math?” blew up on the Nanidemo Jikkyou (nanG) board. It kicked off with a post arguing that since LLMs now outperform mathematicians at math, the whole subject has lost its purpose — and that class time should be shifted to science instead. That drew a wave of pushback: math builds logical thinking, math is a language and a tool you need, and so on. The debate spiraled further into whether AI has actually solved one of the Millennium Prize Problems. In the end, the discussion never quite resolved, with posters talking past each other — some arguing about the ability to solve math itself, others about the ability to use math as a skill taught in school.

    Nah, isn't it pointless?
    LLMs killed math.
Since LLMs are better at math than mathematicians now, I think the point of learning math has basically disappeared.

No matter how much math you study, you'll never beat AI, and mathematician as a profession is going away too.

Raw math ability genuinely means nothing anymore.
Thanks to AI, math's only remaining value is as the language of natural science.

What matters is 'the ability to use math as a language.'
That's why math should be cut and that time, scope, and exam weight shifted to science.
    18AnonymousSep 17, 2026 20:28

    Nah, there is a downside.
No matter how hard you study, AI will still be better at math than any mathematician.

What you're describing is 'math as language/tool.'
That's exactly why I'm saying it should get more time — folded into science class.
My position is that 'math as a language/tool' should be emphasized even more within science than it is now.

    Math is a formal science.

AI now outperforms any human at formal sciences in general, not just math — and unlike natural science, AI can even self-verify the results, so it's truly over for that field.

I'm not saying 'scrap math class!'
I'm saying 'scrap math class and shift that time into science!'

What's needed isn't 'raw math ability' but 'the ability to wield math as a language/tool.'

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Millennium Prize Problems, math’s most famous unsolved challenges, remain officially unsolved as of 2026. The claim floated in the thread — that an LLM solved the Navier–Stokes problem in a matter of days — was itself disputed within the same thread, with one poster countering that the AI simply repackaged a researcher’s unpublished idea. In other words, this isn’t an established fact. What AI has actually demonstrated is the ability to solve International Mathematical Olympiad–level problems and assist with parts of proofs — there’s no confirmed case of it independently producing a complete, peer-reviewed proof.

The thread’s real fault line was the distinction between “the ability to solve math itself” and “the ability to use math as a tool or language.” Even granting that the former can be handed off to AI, many pushed back that secondary school math education is exactly where the latter gets built, and that science class alone can’t teach it systematically. Because opinions on the value of the discipline itself and opinions on math’s place in the school curriculum tend to get tangled together, it’s worth keeping track of which argument is actually being made at any given point.

  • New “Fire Emblem” Locked at 30fps — Some Say “GTA’s 30fps Too, So It’s Fine”

A debate broke out on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board over the new “Fire Emblem” title being locked at 30fps on Switch 2. The thread’s original poster complained, “Zelda can do 60fps” and “I wanted to enjoy silky-smooth battle scenes,” but other posters pushed back one after another with comments like “Not many people demand 60fps from a strategy RPG” and “GTA runs at 30fps too, so it’s fine.” Meanwhile, some questioned the hardware’s processing power outright, saying “Only getting 30fps with graphics like this means the Switch 2’s performance is just too weak.” The debate over frame rate remained split as the thread went on.

    Re: #87
    Right?
Though for a driving game like GTA, 30fps is a non-starter.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The Fire Emblem series was originally a turn-based strategy RPG, and titles with less action-oriented gameplay have historically not prioritized high frame rates. In recent years, however, more Nintendo titles on the same hardware — like The Legend of Zelda — have added 60fps support, which has made fans more critical when comparing games. The “GTA6 is also 30fps” point raised in the thread symbolizes a broader recent mood where 30fps is becoming acceptable even for major blockbuster titles, and it’s frequently cited as a benchmark in frame-rate debates. Meanwhile, the conflicting reports among posters about the frame rate in handheld mode reflect a common pattern in these kinds of online discussions, where claims spread by hearsay rather than hands-on testing — a reminder not to take such claims at face value without checking the actual behavior firsthand. It’s also worth keeping in mind that frame rate depends on genre, graphical load, and how well a developer has optimized the game, so it can’t be judged by visual graphics quality alone.

If it goes through, US Starbucks and Starbucks Japan would reportedly become almost entirely separate companies. Commenters speculated that the parent company might be offloading its most profitable unit to cover poor performance back home, drawing comparisons to brands like Mister Donut and Tully’s that withered in the US but thrived in Japan. This is honestly circulating pretty seriously though

Background and Key Points of This Story

Starbucks Japan has been a wholly owned subsidiary since 2014, when US headquarters bought up all of its shares, so this story is essentially about whether that arrangement is now being unwound. The report is only at the “considering a sale” stage — as commenters noted when the article briefly vanished, no official announcement or follow-up has surfaced yet. Starbucks’ US business has seen ongoing declines in same-store sales, and selling off a profitable overseas subsidiary to raise cash isn’t a new move for a struggling company, but as the thread also questioned, that doesn’t guarantee it actually fixes the slump back home. The thread title’s phrase “decided to withdraw” goes further than what was actually reported, and it’s easy to misread that as more than just a report on a sale under consideration.

  • BOOWY to Release “Album Cover” T-Shirts — 5ch: “Paying ¥6,600? Too Embarrassing, No Way”

BOOWY, the rock band that broke up in 1988, remains popular enough that CD and DVD sales still haven’t slowed down 38 years later. On July 2 this year, a remastered recording of their legendary 1986 Budokan concert premiered on YouTube at the exact same start time as the original show. The next development to make waves was the release of T-shirts featuring the album cover art. The topic drew over 40 replies on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Express+ board — alongside nostalgic comments, plenty of cool reactions showed up too, like “T-shirts, now?” and “¥6,600 is way too much,” and the discussion eventually drifted into the relationship between Kyosuke Himuro and Tomoyasu Hotei and the prospects of a reunion.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s been 38 years since BOOWY disbanded in 1988, but projects riding on their enduring popularity keep coming — this July, a remastered recording of their legendary 1986 Budokan concert premiered on YouTube at the same start time as the original show. The T-shirt release is part of that same trend, and opinions in the thread split mainly along two lines: the price and practicality question of “would you really pay ¥6,600 for an album-cover T-shirt these days,” and a gap in expectations over “will this actually build momentum toward a reunion, or is it just more merchandising.” On the relationship between Kyosuke Himuro and Tomoyasu Hotei, some posts mentioned things like “Hotei wants to invite Himuro but can’t reach him,” reflecting both a desire for a reunion and a sense of realistic distance between the two. As for how much of the merchandise revenue actually reaches the members themselves, the thread only contains unverified rumors like “apparently none of it goes to them” — no official statement has been confirmed.

  • Junior comedians worry about Tetsuro Degawa’s picky eating: “He won’t live long” — can’t drink water, hooked on juice instead

Tetsuro Degawa appeared on TV Tokyo’s “Zubora ni Kenko! Karada ni Iiwake” (roughly, “Lazy but Healthy: Excuses for Your Body”) on the 16th, where his eating habits came under the spotlight in a segment about managing blood sugar. His close friend Kazuki Iio of the comedy duo Zun revealed in a video message that Degawa “can’t drink water” and “loves carbonated drinks and fresh juice,” prompting fellow comedians to voice concern about his life expectancy. This sparked a debate on 5ch between users who consider excess sugar intake more dangerous than alcohol and those who countered that it isn’t carcinogenic. The thread went on to bring up an anecdote about Warren Buffett, a debate over zero-sugar cola, and even whether talent on food shows should be required to submit health checkup results.

Comedian Tetsuro Degawa appeared on TV Tokyo’s “Zubora ni Kenko! Karada ni Iiwake” (Wednesdays at 6:25 PM) on the 16th, where junior comedians expressed concern over his diet.

The show brought in a renowned doctor to cover blood sugar management. During the segment, a video message was shown from Kazuki Iio of the comedy duo Zun, a close personal friend of Degawa’s. Iio said, “(Degawa) basically can’t drink water. He says it’s because ‘it has no flavor.’ So it’s carbonated drinks for him — like sparkling water, which America gave the world. And juice has to be fresh juice, 100 percent. I guess he likes things with a strong, distinct taste.”

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The show “Zubora ni Kenko! Karada ni Iiwake” brings in renowned doctors to cover blood sugar management, and Degawa’s inability to drink water along with his preference for carbonated drinks and fresh juice was introduced as one example. On the thread, the view that “excess sugar is more dangerous than alcohol” clashed with the counter-view that “it isn’t carcinogenic,” and the discussion took the shape of a classic online health debate, complete with the anecdote of Warren Buffett drinking cola daily while living to a ripe old age. Another point of debate was whether talent appearing on food shows should be required to submit health checkup results. Company employees in Japan are legally required, under the Industrial Safety and Health Act, to undergo an annual health checkup, but freelance entertainers face no such requirement — a gap that feeds the perception that “TV has lax compliance standards.” While the link between sugar intake and blood sugar levels is medically well established, opinions within the thread remained divided on the comparison with alcohol and on whether it’s carcinogenic, so it’s worth noting that no definitive conclusion was reached.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “Junior comedian Soichi Nakaoka worries about Tetsuro Degawa’s diet: “There’s no way he’ll live long” — picky eating exposed: “fish roe, mayonnaise, juice”.”

Voice actor Takasei Nakao appeared on ABEMA’s “Seiyuu to Yoasobi – Friday” (lit. “Voice Actors’ Night Hangout”) for the first time in about eight years, and revealed that his very first paycheck for voice acting work was just 200 yen — and that his only real bragging right is beating Koichi Yamadera for the role of Baikinman. Reacting to the story, posters on 5channel’s Geinou/Sports Express+ board lined up to compare Nakao’s signature characters, like Frieza and Baikinman, against Yamadera’s dubbing work and knack for juggling countless roles. Opinions in the thread split over who has “more iconic roles” and who leaves “the bigger impression,” turning into a back-and-forth where each actor’s strengths got their due.

Episode #16 of “Seiyuu to Yoasobi – Friday” (hosted by Tomokazu Seki and Kikunosuke Toya, airing Fridays 10:00-11:30 PM on ABEMA’s Anime LIVE channel) aired on September 11. Takasei Nakao made a guest appearance for the first time in roughly eight years, joining a segment looking back on his acting career along with a “three-generation gap talk.”

Toya, who reportedly requested Nakao as a guest, was meeting him face-to-face for the first time that day. He shared that he grew up watching “Dragon Ball” as a kid, and that his niece is currently obsessed with “Soreike! Anpanman,” saying “Thank you so much, really” with obvious emotion.

Figured he was only Frieza and Baikinman, but turns out he's also Sniff from Moomin
Now that I think about it, yeah, that voice really is Lord Frieza's

I have this memory that back when Anpanman started, Yama-chan was still pretty much a nobody

I loved his Seiya Tsukahara from Spunky
    24AnonymousSep 17, 2026 18:59
Furious that Shingo Katori stole his catchphrase "Ohhaa!"
Yamadera went on Oha Suta to give Katori a "thank you" that was really a complaint

Happened to catch an old episode of Taiyou ni Hoero! and there he was, young
    37AnonymousSep 17, 2026 19:04
Yamadera's stronger association is dubbing foreign stuff
He doesn't really have a super-famous anime role
    Donald Duck maybe

    Re: #37
I think of Kaji from Evangelion, Ryoga from Ranma, and Butter from Anpanman

    Re: #37
Surprisingly he's mostly side characters or villains — not many lead roles
In that sense Spike from Cowboy Bebop might be his defining role

I remembered Yamadera voiced Cheese, so I looked him up — turns out he's playing four roles in Anpanman right now, including Uncle Jam, Kabao, and the rare character Kamameshi-don lol

Kids who grew up on Anpanman
    probably think of Baikinman first
though I'd guess most old guys think of Lord Frieza

Just google it, his real name comes right up
Honestly this guy's been good since his child-actor days — you can tell watching old stuff like "Dokkoi Daisaku," where he appeared on-screen in the flesh

I just have this mental image of him from baseball anime, like Kondo in Captain and Nishimura in Touch

He also played Carlos Rivera in Ashita no Joe 2 and was in Igano Kabamaru too
Didn't know he'd been in Zero Tester as well
(I do remember Akira Kamiya yelling stuff like "Sigma Zero Beam" in Zero Tester though)
    70AnonymousSep 17, 2026 19:15
Baikinman would sound wrong with a handsome voice like Koichi Yamadera's, right?
    75AnonymousSep 17, 2026 19:18
    Re: #70
He's played plenty of non-human characters though
Like Kabao and Donkey Kong, for instance lol

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Seiyuu to Yoasobi” is an ABEMA talk show hosted by Tomokazu Seki and Kikunosuke Toya, and this appearance marked Takasei Nakao’s first time on the show in roughly eight years. The story of beating Koichi Yamadera in the Baikinman audition is one Nakao has told before, but the specific figure of a 200-yen starting paycheck drew fresh attention this time around. In the thread, opinions split over whose roles left the bigger impression — Nakao’s or Yamadera’s — surfacing a bit of a generational divide: Yamadera is known for his versatility across dubbing and variety-show work, while Nakao tends to get discussed in terms of intense villain roles like Frieza and Baikinman. Worth noting too: 200 yen back then would be worth something like a few thousand yen today, so it’s best not to assume from the raw number alone that the pay was absurdly low.

  • Hanshin Crush Hiroshima 7-1 as Morishita Blasts His 34th Homer — 5ch: ‘The Tigers Are Fully Back lol’

In a night game on September 17, the Hanshin Tigers cruised to a 7-1 win over the Hiroshima Carp. Shota Morishita launched his league-leading 34th home run, a two-run shot, as the middle-order trio of Morishita, Teruaki Sato, and Yusuke Oyama combined to drive in all 7 runs in a show of offensive firepower. On 5ch’s live game thread, comments piled up like “The Tigers are fully back lol” and “Meanwhile my team is grinding its teeth watching the champion Tigers and the BayStars mash the ball…”. The same day also brought news that the Giants’ Shunsuke Urata had been pulled from the active roster with a torn ligament in his right elbow, drawing attention as a development that could affect both the late-season pennant race and the Rookie of the Year race.

If that pole-direct shot happened at this quirky old ballpark on some technicality, then it's a foul ball, so no problem (note: a pole-direct hit is actually ruled a home run under the real rules)

    BayStars' bats VS Tigers' bats

    Background and Talking Points

The thread title “Giants Acting Manager 140” isn’t reporting a managerial change — it’s simply the running number of a recurring live-game thread. The phrase “my team” that shows up in the posts is thread-specific slang referring to whichever club a given poster supports; here it’s used to lament a struggling team while watching the red-hot Tigers and BayStars pile up runs. The removal of Shunsuke Urata from the Giants’ active roster over a torn ligament in his right elbow drew the thread’s attention because he was also seen as a leading Rookie of the Year candidate, making it relevant to both the Giants’ lineup construction and the award race. For Hanshin, the middle-order trio of Morishita, Teruaki Sato, and Oyama all performed well, and the post about being “one behind Sato Teruaki” refers to the two players’ race for home runs.
