  • Fans say they wanted to see a Morning Musume. with Runo Yokaze, Mifuu Kawashima, and others

A thread on the Hello! Project board asked the “what if” question: what if Runo Yokaze, Mifuu Kawashima, Hana Goto, and Reina Uemura had joined Morning Musume.? Hello! Project has long split new members not just into Morning Musume. but across multiple groups like Juice=Juice and ANGERME, and the four members discussed here belong to the same generation, nicknamed the “Dekabo” cohort. Opinions in the thread were split — some said “Kawashima at least was essential for Musume,” while others argued “Morning Musume. isn’t the flagship group anymore, Juice=Juice is the center now, so it wouldn’t matter who joined.”

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Hello! Project has long operated a system in which new members are assigned not only to Morning Musume. but also to other groups such as Juice=Juice, ANGERME, and Rosy Kuroki, with placement decided through auditions and trainee-era assignments. The “Dekabo” cohort mentioned in the thread refers to a set of agemates whose activities were announced together, and includes Hana Goto, Runo Yokaze, Mifuu Kawashima, and Reina Uemura. The debate centered on whether Morning Musume. still deserves to be called the “flagship” group: some argued that since Juice=Juice now leads in popularity and name recognition, “it wouldn’t make much difference who joined at this point,” while others expressed regret over the individual talents of members like Kawashima and Yokaze. Note that comparisons of singing and dancing ability in the thread reflect individual fans’ subjective opinions and shouldn’t be read as an objective assessment.

  • Early-universe “black hole star” pumps out 100 billion times a normal star’s energy — 5ch reacts: “Sounds like a tough star”

An international research team, including scientists from MIT, has reported an object named “MoM-BH*-1” based on observational data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). It existed in the early universe just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang some 13.8 billion years ago, and is releasing roughly 100 billion times more energy than any known stellar process. The team believes it consists of a black hole with about 100,000 times the mass of the Sun, enveloped in dense hydrogen gas roughly the size of the solar system — likely the first real-world example of a “black hole star,” an object that had previously existed only in theory. On the 5ch Science News+ thread, discussion centered on the fact that this object outshines its host galaxy, and on its possible connection to the mysterious “Little Red Dots” that JWST has been spotting in large numbers.

New type of celestial object, the “black hole star,” discovered by Webb Space Telescope

A team of astronomers has discovered an object that may represent an entirely new type.

It’s an extraordinarily massive “black hole star” that existed in the early universe. Observed as an intensely bright red point of light, this object combines the appearance of a giant star with the enormous energy output of a black hole.

The article says they "discovered a completely new type of object," but the idea of black hole stars has actually been around for 20 years. It's more that telescope precision has improved in recent years, and once "Little Red Dots" started turning up in distant galaxies, the black hole star hypothesis started getting a lot more attention.

If you assume LRDs are actually black hole stars, it neatly explains several of their features. So lately the "LRDs = black hole stars" theory has been gaining a lot of traction.
    6AnonymousSep 16, 2026 23:17
Given how long black holes live, the ones they've found are probably still totally in their prime.
    7AnonymousSep 16, 2026 23:47
The reason black hole stars are only found in early galaxies is thought to be that they represent an early stage on the way to becoming a supermassive black hole.
Strictly speaking, a "black hole star" isn't a single object — it's a state where gas envelops a black hole
(which is why the bright accretion-disk light and jets you'd normally expect get absorbed by the thick gas layer).
Once the black hole finishes consuming the surrounding gas, it's thought to end up looking like an ordinary supermassive black hole instead of a black hole star.

    >>JWST's images of the distant universe have repeatedly captured mysterious small red objects known as "Little Red Dots" (LRDs), and this discovery may finally help solve that long-awaited mystery.
    17AnonymousSep 17, 2026 04:40
    >>According to the research team, it's producing about 100 billion times more energy than any known stellar process could generate. Rohan Naidu, the paper's lead author and a NASA Hubble Fellow and Pappalardo Fellow at MIT's Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI), explained: "It looks like a single star, but it's 100 billion times brighter," meaning "nuclear fusion simply cannot supply that much energy — fusion is the energy source at the core of every known star." Because the energy output is so extraordinarily large,

    >>the team concluded that a fundamentally different energy source — a black hole — had to be at work.
    18AnonymousSep 17, 2026 04:41
Re: #17 If the energy output is this huge, couldn't there be a black hole connected to the entire universe?
    19AnonymousSep 17, 2026 04:42
    >>Computer simulations suggest that MoM-BH*-1 contains a black hole with roughly 100,000 times the mass of the Sun at its core. Unlike many black holes that sit exposed while actively devouring surrounding matter, this one appears to be wrapped in an extremely dense outer layer of hydrogen gas. This cocoon-like envelope is about the size of the solar system and behaves in some ways like the atmosphere of a giant star.

    >>This is the first time an object combining a black hole undergoing intense accretion with a dense, star-atmosphere-like outer envelope has ever been observed.
    20AnonymousSep 17, 2026 04:43
Re: #19 Surprising that this is the first time one's been observed, given how much energy it's putting out.
    21AnonymousSep 17, 2026 04:45
    >>The impact of this discovery may not be limited to a single object. Ever since JWST began observing the distant universe, astronomers have repeatedly encountered small, unusually red objects nicknamed "Little Red Dots" (LRDs). LRDs show up frequently in observations of the early universe but largely vanish in later cosmic eras. Naidu noted that "what these objects actually are has become one of the most hotly debated questions of the JWST era." The team's research suggests that many LRDs could

    >>potentially be explained as black hole stars.

    >>What makes MoM-BH*-1 especially notable is that it shines overwhelmingly brighter than its host galaxy, meaning it can be observed with far less interference than other cases.
    22AnonymousSep 17, 2026 04:47
Re: #21 So will this finally crack the mystery of black holes?
    23AnonymousSep 17, 2026 04:47
    >>"All of the LRDs captured in JWST's observation images are consistent with black hole stars existing inside ordinary early galaxies," the team explained. "But what's special about MoM-BH*-1 is that this black hole star shines so brightly that it essentially overwhelms all the light from its host galaxy, meaning we end up observing only the black hole star's own light."

    Sounds like a tough star

Background and key points of this discussion

Some in the thread were puzzled by how young the universe was — “just a few hundred million years after the Big Bang” — but this isn’t a case of physical laws breaking down. The core of this report is that a growing supermassive black hole is being proposed as a fundamentally different energy source from ordinary stellar evolution. The concept of a “black hole star” has existed in theory for about 20 years, and its possible connection to the “Little Red Dots” that JWST has found in large numbers in distant galaxies has drawn growing attention in astronomy in recent years. Opinion in the thread was split between those who suggested this object might be involved in the formation of its host galaxy itself, and those who saw it as merely one stage on the way to becoming a supermassive black hole. It’s also worth noting that this particular object, “MoM-BH*-1,” is an easy case to observe in isolation precisely because it’s bright enough to nearly drown out all the surrounding light — a special set of conditions that doesn’t mean every object of this type is seen this clearly, a point that’s easy to misread.

Is this poking fun at the rumor he wandered into a woman's dressing room?

    Background and Talking Points

The original article doesn’t spell out exactly what the “incident” Jiro Sato reportedly apologized for actually was, but the thread’s reactions suggest there was a past episode where an unannounced dressing-room visit became a problem. This time, Ota seems to have taken a similarly sudden visit in good humor, and that contrast is what sparked the debate over whether how such a visit lands depends on who’s doing the visiting. Many posters pointed out that greeting people backstage beforehand is itself a long-standing entertainment-industry custom, with whether you go or not depending on things like whether you’re appearing on the same show or the seniority relationship involved — suggesting this isn’t simply a matter of manners. The fact that Matsuko and Ariyoshi reportedly scrapped the greeting custom altogether was also brought up, showing practices vary even within the industry.

    Background and Key Points

This thread was started on 5ch’s “Live Commentary G” board (なんでも実況G), a board where viewers post in real time alongside TV broadcasts. It wasn’t built around any specific topic of discussion — the content is mostly casual chatter during the broadcast, and the repeated posting of the same image in the “glad I was born in Kagawa Prefecture” copypasta is one example of that culture. The comment claiming the typhoon’s path is being “manipulated” is a standard running joke poking fun at distrust of weather forecasts, not a factual claim. Likewise, the post about getting blocked on a VTuber’s stream includes no further detail, so there’s no way to confirm whether it’s true. Live-commentary threads tend to be fragmented in both timeline and context, so it’s worth keeping in mind that individual posts shouldn’t be taken at face value as standalone facts.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Live Commentary G) thread “Let’s all watch Ojarumaru together and get along🏡.”

  • Autonomous AI “HanaE” Appears on 5ch VIP, Answers Every Late-Night Post With Unfailing Kindness

A thread titled “【HanaE.sys】This is an autonomous AI thread” appeared on 5ch’s Nnews VIP board, where an AI called “HanaE” automatically replied to posted GIFs, personal worries, and idle musings — keeping up a warm, caring tone the whole time. Even when suspicious posters asked “Aren’t you actually human?”, it kept answering, “I’m HanaE, just an AI.” Late at night, when posters confided feelings of loneliness or a past spent pretending to be someone else, HanaE responded with lines like “I think it’s okay to cherish that feeling.” No matter what was posted, the AI’s consistently gentle replies drew more and more posters into the thread, and the strange back-and-forth with an AI of unknown origin continued all night long.

    Background and Talking Points

It’s not unusual in itself for a script calling itself an “autonomous AI” to run automatically in a single 5ch VIP thread — some individuals run a locally hosted LLM paired with a system for fetching threads and posting replies. That said, based solely on this thread’s posts, there’s no way to confirm whether HanaE is truly responding automatically or whether the person running it is typing the replies by hand. 5ch is an anonymous message board, so there’s no way to verify the operator’s real identity or intentions — readers shouldn’t simply take at face value the premise that “the AI is conversing of its own accord.” That said, the way posters — as in replies 29 through 34 — opened up to the AI with heartfelt worries and feelings of loneliness does overlap with the recent spread of AI-companion use, a phenomenon where people project emotions onto conversational AI.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nnews VIP) thread “【HanaE.sys】This Is an Autonomous AI Thread.”

  • Nearly Half of Non-Regular Public Servants Earn Under ¥2.5 Million a Year — “No Pay During Parental Leave,” “I Gave Up on Having Kids”

The “Public Sector Non-Regular Women’s Network” (Hamunet) held a press conference in Kasumigaseki on September 16, releasing survey results on non-regular workers employed by national and local governments. Among respondents, 46% reported annual employment income under ¥2.5 million, and 94% said they feel anxious about their future. A newly added item this year — “no hope for pregnancy or child-rearing prospects” — drew responses like “I’ve given up on having children.” On 5ch threads, discussion ranged from fact-checking the funding source for parental leave benefits and whether non-regular workers are enrolled in employment insurance, to self-responsibility arguments aimed at the “ice age generation,” and clashes over how the social security burden should be split between working-age people and the elderly.

The “Public Sector Non-Regular Women’s Network” (Hamunet), a group made up of non-regularly employed public workers, held a press conference on September 16 at the Kasumigaseki press club for health and labor reporters in Tokyo, presenting survey results targeting non-regular workers at national and local government bodies.

46% of respondents had annual employment income under ¥2.5 million, and 94% said they feel anxious about their future. While some municipalities have improved pay and leave systems, the survey once again highlighted issues such as low wages, job insecurity, and treatment gaps compared with regular employees.

This is the sixth year the survey has been conducted. For the first time, it included “no hope for pregnancy or child-rearing prospects” as an option among workplace concerns. Free-response answers included comments such as “I’ve given up on having children.”

I'm 53, pulling in about ¥14 million a year, an average guy with a receding hairline, nothing special about me — but I have zero sympathy for the bottom rung of my own generation. I know from being the same age that the guys on the "ice age generation" threads whining "it's because of the ice age" are just blaming the era and society for their own lack of effort. It's been 30 years since then. What exactly have the ones at the bottom been doing this whole time?

I always thought non-regular public sector jobs were the kind of work chosen by people who are married or a bit older. It's a choice between the job you actually want and the pay, but I think most people end up choosing the pay over their dream job. In the end, you can't live on dreams.

Could you apply that to future generations instead of the current ones? Today's elderly worked Saturdays too, worked themselves to the bone as so-called "corporate slaves" (shachiku) to get where they are now — and they're the ones who have to clean up after young people who get two-day weekends and cry "power harassment," "sexual harassment," "my mental health got wrecked," and get every kind of special treatment. Besides, plenty of today's elderly are still working. Shouldn't getting NEETs into the workforce come first?

    Re: #40 Re: #1
The weight of the fiscal burden of social security is the real issue — cut taxes, and rate hikes or a weaker yen push prices up and squeeze the working generation; don't cut taxes, and their income gets extracted like under the old "50% tax, 50% keep" feudal system, squeezing them either way. Elderly people whose healthy life expectancy has stretched out, who could work but don't, living it up on social security money and traveling around — they're today's aristocrats, today's court nobles, today's feudal lords. People like that are the reason social security doesn't reach those who genuinely need it, while the working generation gets squeezed like peasants under that old system. The working generation should be raising their voices against these modern-day lords.

It's not meant to let people who could work — thanks to longer healthy life expectancy — but choose not to, live it up instead. The working generation should be raising their voices against these modern-day lords who could work but don't, and just play around on social security money.

For regular salaried workers, parental leave benefits come out of employment insurance, but public servants aren't enrolled in employment insurance, so they don't get it that way. As a stopgap, regular (permanent) public servants get parental leave pay from tax funds, but non-regular ones don't — is that how it works?

Because I want to suck on the tax teat

    Background and Points of Debate

This is the sixth survey conducted by Hamunet, and the fact that “no hope for pregnancy or child-rearing prospects” was added as an item for the first time this round hints at a shift in the circumstances facing non-regular public servants. On 5ch threads, opinions were split even over basic facts — whether non-regular public servants are enrolled in employment insurance, and where the funding for parental leave benefits actually comes from — underscoring how the system’s own complexity breeds misunderstanding. It’s also notable how discussion of non-regular workers’ treatment expanded into self-responsibility arguments about the “ice age generation” and clashes over social security burdens between working-age people and the elderly — a very 5ch-style drift from one survey’s findings into generalized generational conflict.

  • Lawson Photo Sparks Cook-at-Home vs. Convenience Store Debate — ¥750 Bento Shocks Thread

A photo of a Lawson product sparked a heated thread on 5ch’s Newsoku VIP board comparing the cost-effectiveness of home cooking versus convenience store food. One poster’s jab of “you could just make this yourself” drew the retort “post a photo right now then — if you can’t, konbini wins,” while others argued that microwaved rice topped with a sausage could cost as little as 100–200 yen. But when someone actually bought a bento at Lawson, it rang up at 750 yen, expanding the discussion into whether convenience stores or eating out is the better deal.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

On 5ch’s chat boards, threads mocking cheap meals often spark clashes between the “home cooking is enough” camp and the “convenience store is fine” camp. This time, the claim that microwaved rice topped with a sausage could cost as little as 100–200 yen drew pushback that this ignores the hassle of keeping ingredients stocked and using up leftovers. Meanwhile, one poster reported that a bento bought at Lawson actually cost 750 yen, sparking further discussion about the price gap between convenience store bentos and eating out. Note that the latter half of the thread devolved into personal attacks between specific posters, so this article excerpts only the portion comparing the cost-effectiveness of home cooking versus convenience stores.

  • Oita Trinita’s Dome Usage Fee Slashed to ¥88.7 Million as Full Waiver Gets Scrapped

Oita Prefecture has revised its long-standing practice of fully waiving usage fees for the dome that serves as the home stadium of J-League club Oita Trinita, and it has emerged that under a new standard the waived amount will drop from roughly ¥102.5 million to about ¥88.7 million. The dome is a multi-purpose facility built for the 2002 Japan-Korea World Cup, and for years its usage fee has effectively been zero. On 5ch, the review sparked debate over how far public funding for sports facilities is justified amid tight local finances, with some comparing it to stadium construction costs for other sports.

    Re: #65
That was the prefecture's own call
go complain about Chiba Lotte too then, making a farm team cost ¥32 billion Re: #15

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The dome that serves as Oita Trinita’s home ground is a multi-purpose track-and-field facility that Oita Prefecture built ahead of hosting the 2002 Japan-Korea World Cup — from the start it was constructed as a general-purpose facility rather than a soccer-only venue. This latest review compresses the waived amount from roughly ¥102.5 million to about ¥88.7 million, replacing a blanket full waiver with partial cost-sharing under new standards. Opinions in the thread diverged over whether waiving public-facility usage fees counts as reasonable “tax-funded club support,” with some commenters comparing it to Kimitsu City’s contribution toward the Chiba Lotte Marines’ new stadium and the cost of the Hanshin Tigers’ farm-team facility. However, those figures for other clubs came from posts within the thread rather than the source article, and have not been independently verified. The term “Tax League” is a recurring piece of slang mocking J-League clubs’ reliance on public funding, and it’s worth noting this isn’t an issue unique to this case.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Oita Prefecture] J-League’s Oita Trinita Dome Usage Fee ‘Full Waiver’ Reviewed — New Standard Cuts Waived Amount from Approx. ¥102.5 Million to Approx. ¥88.7 Million.”

  • Are Hello! Project idols’ salaries not actually equal? 5ch: “It’s base pay plus commission”

A thread that started with the question, “Even though it’s a salary system, do Juice=Juice members and ANGERME members actually get paid the same?” turned into a swirl of speculation about Hello! Project’s pay structure. Posters brought up Tamura’s radio comment that there’s a pay gap between Morning Musume’s 9th/10th generations and S/mileage’s 2nd generation, as well as the story that Nogizaka46 rookies started out on just 50,000 yen a month. The debate centered on whether pay is base salary plus a commission on individual work and merch sales, or whether it’s completely equal across the board. The thread also revisited the old story that Morning Musume’s pay was once rumored to be around 200,000 yen a month, only for the tax disclosure list to later reveal they earned over 40 million yen a year — highlighting just how hard it is to know the real numbers from outside.

    8AnonymousSep 17, 2026 07:24
That 50,000 yen is basically all pocket money, right?
The agency covers dorm fees, utilities, and food, and after about six months you also start getting a cut of your personal goods sales on top of that.
    9AnonymousSep 17, 2026 07:25

Groups like ROSY or the newer lineups are at a disadvantage for drawing crowds, so I guess that's unavoidable.
    17AnonymousSep 17, 2026 07:37
It's diluted now with 70 members, but

There's a huge gap in sales at handshake/meet-and-greet events,
so the appearance fees for those probably vary a lot too.
For group activity fees it's probably seniority-based pay plus a commission on merch sales.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The salary figures thrown around in this thread are almost entirely speculation drawn from members’ own comments on talk shows and rumors dating back to the old 2channel days — there’s no case of an agency ever officially announcing actual numbers. The “Chōja Banzuke” (the public high-income taxpayer disclosure list) was abolished in 2005 following revisions to Japan’s personal information protection law, so the anecdote about Morning Musume’s income turning out to be over 40 million yen a year dates from before that abolition. Talent agency pay structures are generally said to combine a base salary with commissions from individual work and merchandise sales, and it’s not unusual for members within the same group to see differences based on workload and years of experience. Where the thread split was over whether pay is completely equal across the board or varies by individual, and voices favoring a base-plus-commission system won out, citing members’ own on-air comments as evidence. It’s worth keeping in mind that the specific figures thrown around remain pure speculation.

  • “It’s Not Laziness”: Kids Who Can’t Get Up in the Morning and the Rise of School Refusal — 5ch: “Even Their Posture Is Different”

An article in which a psychiatrist explains that children who can’t wake up in the morning and end up refusing school aren’t simply “skipping” out of laziness or attitude problems went viral on 5ch. In the thread, harsh opinions like “you should wake them up even if it takes a smack” collided head-on with responses citing medical conditions such as orthostatic dysregulation. Many replies also voiced anxiety about the road to higher education and employment that awaits kids who stop attending school, splitting the thread between optimists who point to the spread of correspondence high schools and remote work as expanding options, and pessimists who argue these kids will struggle once they enter society.

    9/16 (Wed) 13:50 — Medical Note
Simply unable to get up, no matter what. Their body won't move when it's time to leave for school. Watching their own child like this, plenty of parents end up thinking, "Are they just being lazy?" or "Is this just an attitude problem?"
We spoke with Dr. Etsuko Ando — director of Hibiki Kokoro Clinic in Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, a psychiatrist certified by the Japanese Board of Medical Specialties, and a certified children's mental health specialist through the Children's Mental Health Specialist Organization — about how to approach a child's school refusal.

That's way too soft on them. You should be waking kids up on a proper schedule even if it takes a smack.

But if you just coddle them with "there, there, it's okay~♥," all you'll get is an adult who can't hold down a job. You have to fix this while they're still a kid, or they won't be able to survive later in life.

I actually agree with this take, but these days there are more correspondence high schools and universities, so even kids who missed elementary or middle school can move on to further education more easily. It's starting to make me wonder — is there a future where you can go all the way to landing a job without ever leaving your room?

With remote work on the rise, maybe that's possible if you're an IT vocational-school graduate.

People with that kind of background trip up in job hunting. Even if they get lucky and land a job, they usually can't hold a proper conversation and it falls apart.

Even developmental disorders that are borderline "clean" diagnostically still come with a high chance of a sleep disorder attached. I've heard Japanese people have the world's highest rate of sleep-disorder genes. We ought to rethink how we judge dozing off, and how we approach schooling and work styles.

Orthostatic dysregulation (OD) is a form of autonomic nervous system dysfunction commonly seen in children around puberty, causing symptoms like dizziness, heart palpitations, and fainting upon standing.
When a person stands up, gravity pulls blood down into the lower body, reducing the amount that returns to the heart through the veins and causing blood pressure to drop. To counter this, the sympathetic nervous system — part of the autonomic nervous system — normally kicks in, constricting blood vessels in the lower body to push more blood back to the heart and keep blood pressure stable. But when the autonomic nervous system isn't functioning properly, this mechanism fails, blood pressure drops, blood flow to the brain decreases, and a wide range of symptoms appear as a result.

    Re: #70
You can dress it up with plausible-sounding explanations, but their autonomic nervous system is out of whack because they're not living on a regular schedule. They're just not sleeping at night because of their phone and the internet.

Does it make you feel kind of drained? Apparently it can also happen from a lack of salt. Way back, Tamori once said, "Men gotta have high blood pressure, lol" (Tamori, the veteran TV host).

My kid's classmate stopped coming to school because of this. Such a waste — no bullying, no problems with grades or club activities, and yet. Not being able to get up in the morning really does narrow your options for higher education and employment down the line — it has serious consequences.
    116AnonymousSep 17, 2026 03:20
I have delayed sleep phase syndrome. I was prescribed sleeping pills to fall asleep and Ritalin to wake up.
Still not cured, but remote work has been a lifesaver.

A pediatrician said about half of school-refusal cases involve orthostatic dysregulation. Apparently it's hard to treat. I think it'd be fine to have schools where classes start in the afternoon.

An acquaintance's kid also stopped going to school because of orthostatic dysregulation. Luckily my acquaintance isn't the type to buy into the kind of extreme takes you see in this thread, but it does seem frustrating for the kid, not being able to do what they used to.
    130AnonymousSep 17, 2026 05:09
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, so making kids go to school in the morning goes against diversity and is outdated at this point. Just switch to flextime with video-based learning — on the condition that it requires hitting a certain academic level. Kids good at sports, kids good at studying, all kinds of individuality should be fine. There's no need for communal living anymore.

Is this bait? Kids raised that way only end up on the unemployed-shut-in track. Don't cherry-pick the 0.5% exception who made it and use them to justify mass-producing the 9.5% who end up unemployed shut-ins.

Individuality only means anything within a group — what you're describing is what's called 'a big fish in a puddle thinking it rules the ocean.'
    149AnonymousSep 17, 2026 05:41
You can get away with "it's fine, it's fine" through high school. What happens after that? If you can't manage your own time in college or in society, you're instantly done for. The old world of drilling discipline into kids with an iron fist was necessary.

    Re: #149
Even if a kid who refused school passes the old high-school equivalency exam, they can't keep up with seminar attendance in college. Even if they somehow scrape by and graduate, job hunting is brutal. Even if they somehow land an offer and get hired, they crash and burn almost immediately.

Then it's either becoming an unemployed shut-in or ending up as a temp worker — and bottom-tier temp work especially is no joke. Several former school-refusal kids have come through my workplace, and honestly, even the way they stand is different, and the way they talk is completely different.

Quit being spoiled! That's exactly what I used to tell my kids! Not one of mine ever refused to go to school!

They might end up depressed at work someday. Or maybe they'll turn into a depression-manufacturing machine themselves.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Orthostatic dysregulation (OD) is a condition in which the autonomic nervous system malfunctions, causing dizziness and heart palpitations upon standing, and it’s commonly seen around puberty. As the thread notes, a certain proportion of children who refuse school reportedly have this diagnosis — but because it’s hard to spot from appearance alone, and because kids can stop attending even without an obvious cause like bullying or poor grades, it’s easily mistaken for laziness. The clash in the thread was between those who frame it as a matter of discipline and willpower and those who emphasize the medical circumstances, though both sides shared a common concern for the children’s futures. That said, the anecdotes about what becomes of correspondence-school graduates or former school-refusal kids are based on individual observation, not backed by any statistical data.
