  • 11 People Fall on Escalator at JR Nagano Station, 4-Year-Old Among 2 Injured

On the afternoon of the 20th, an accident occurred in which escalator users at the east exit of JR Nagano Station fell one after another, leaving two people—including a 4-year-old boy—with minor injuries. SBC Shinetsu Broadcasting reported the news at 3:44 p.m. that day. Thread posters were split on the cause: was it the practice of “leaving one side open for walkers,” or a jam caused by the person at the front stumbling near the bottom of the escalator? There was also a side debate over terminology—whether to call the phenomenon a “shogi-piece pile-up” (things toppling forward, like standing shogi tiles) or a “domino effect” (toppling backward).

Background and Key Points of Discussion

At Japanese train stations, the practice of “leaving one side open” while riding escalators has become an entrenched, de facto custom over many years. However, following a string of falling accidents linked to walking on escalators across the country, railway companies and escalator manufacturers have recently stepped up calls for passengers to “stand still on both sides instead of walking.” The SBC Shinetsu Broadcasting article on this incident does not specify the direct cause of the fall, so it remains unclear whether the “leave one side open” custom itself was to blame, or whether it was simply a “jam” caused by someone stumbling near the exit. Thread posters were similarly split between these two views, and some also pointed out that, strictly speaking, a “shogi-piece pile-up” should refer to things toppling forward, while a “domino effect” refers to toppling backward. Further details on the actual cause and circumstances of the accident will have to wait for statements from police and the railway company.

Kojima Productions has issued an official statement in response to spreading online speculation about a change in publishing partner for its new title, PHYSINT. Background and Key Points of the Debate

PHYSINT is a new title from Kojima Productions, led by Hideo Kojima, and news that its original publishing arrangement was changing set off a wave of online speculation — theories ranging from “Sony unilaterally cut the contract” to “Kojima Productions was the one who stirred up conflict first with its post on X.” This official statement appears aimed at calming things down, but the statement itself is only touched on in fragments within the article, and 5ch’s reaction has largely turned into a contest of reading between the lines. Threads repeatedly circled around business performance (“profit,” “loss”) and which platform the game will ultimately land on (“Xbox exclusive,” “PlayStation return”), but none of this has been officially confirmed — it remains speculation on an anonymous message board. Readers should be careful to separate the emotional back-and-forth of defenders and critics from the facts actually stated in the official statement.

A topic buzzed on 5ch’s Livegalileo (general live-commentary) board after reports surfaced that the studio behind the Persona series believes it should remaster or remake the original ‘Persona’ and ‘Persona 2.’ Both games are praised for their scenarios, but their dungeon difficulty and random-encounter systems are frequently blasted as “bad game design,” and posters also pointed out that swapping in new music for the PSP remaster became a real obstacle to further ports. The thread mixed genuine affection for these classics with harsh judgment of their gameplay systems.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The ‘Persona’ series has been a beloved RPG franchise since the original launched in 1996, and from the third entry onward it settled into its now-signature format combining a calendar-based school-life sim with dungeon exploration. The earlier games, 1 and 2, still carry the hallmarks of old-school RPG design — first-person dungeon crawling, random encounters — and despite being praised for their scenarios, they’ve long been flagged as difficult to actually play. A PSP port was released in the past, but replacing the soundtrack with new music proved controversial and kept it from getting a Steam release the way the later P3P did. Shoji Meguro, who directed those PSP versions, has since left Atlus. The thread shows both anticipation for a possible remaster and real concern over whether old-school elements like random encounters and full restarts after a party wipe would fly with modern gamers — making this less a simple wave of nostalgia and more a grounded debate about feasibility.

If you don't get involved with AI you lose, but if AI keeps advancing you lose too.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Investment in AI data centers is a field seeing massive global spending — including power and cooling infrastructure — driven by the surge in computing demand from the spread of generative AI. Nippon Life and Japan’s megabanks are moving in partly because institutional investors are hunting for returns in Japan’s low-interest-rate environment, and partly because Japanese companies still hold a strong position in semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment. Opinion on the thread split over whether AI investment is a “high-risk bet that could turn into bad debt” or “essential social infrastructure for as long as data volumes keep growing.” An often-overlooked fact: many data center projects, even once built, struggle to secure enough power or cooling water, leading to delays of several years before they even go online. Indeed, it’s been pointed out that many planned data centers are slated to launch years from now while still lacking a clear path to securing power.

  • ‘My Boyfriend’s Kanji Is So Weak I’m Losing Interest’ Post Goes Viral — He Even Read ‘Kaijō’ (Doors Open) as ‘Kaiba’ (Horse Feed)

A post on Girls Channel titled “My boyfriend can’t read kanji and it’s turning me off” became a hot topic on 5channel’s News Speed+ board. According to the poster, her boyfriend misreads 開場 (kaijō, “doors open”) as “kaiba” (which sounds like horse feed), 御霊前 (goreizen, the phrase written on condolence-money envelopes) as “mitama mae,” and 用いる (mochiiru, “to use”) as “yōiru.” When the story was reposted to the thread, sympathy poured in (“no way, couldn’t deal”), but posters soon started confessing kanji they themselves had misread — like 就中 (nakanzuku), 月次 (getsuji), and 重複 (jūfuku/chōfuku) — until the discussion drifted from right-or-wrong readings to “just how ashamed should you feel about not being able to read kanji?”

In mid-June, a topic titled “My boyfriend can’t read kanji and it’s cooling my feelings for him” was posted on Girls Channel and sparked a big reaction.

The original poster is troubled by her boyfriend’s poor kanji reading.

“He often misreads things — like 開場 as ‘kaiba,’ 御霊前 as ‘mitama mae,’ 用いる as ‘yōiru.’ I wonder if he’s just weak with kanji, but I haven’t really said anything about it. Am I overthinking this?”

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The original source is an advice post on Girls Channel, and it’s worth noting that 5channel is only relaying it secondhand. In the thread, some pointed out that reading 重複 as “jūfuku” is actually accepted in dictionaries — an example of a reading long dismissed as a “mistake” turning out to be within acceptable range. How well someone reads kanji tends to vary with age and job-related experience, and growing reliance on smartphone auto-conversion — which cuts down on chances to actually write by hand — is likely part of the background, though the thread itself doesn’t dig into that. Note that a few comments crudely equated “can’t read kanji” with a general lack of ability, and those posts have been excluded from this article.

    Re: #73
I've been lifting for three years too, and I'm still totally squishy lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

The event Nishino entered this time was “bodybuilding,” which judges overall body balance and muscle mass. As pointed out in the thread, his previous competition was “physique,” centered on the upper body — so even within the same competition history, the judging criteria differ. The fact that there’s a height-based class (170cm and under) is also something readers unfamiliar with combat sports or physique competitions might easily miss. Opinions in the thread were split on whether this was a strong enough result for three years of effort, with some praising the finish on his back, and others pointing out the underdeveloped abs and shoulder width — differences partly rooted in natural build. It’s also a typical reaction pattern for this kind of story that comedians who’ve bulked up in the past (like Kasuga, and Tokyo Hotei Son’s Shogo) get brought up for comparison once a bodybuilding story breaks.

  • Juice=Juice’s Kohaku Bid Sparks Debate on X, Splits Opinion on 5ch’s Hello! Project Board

Speculation spread on X that Hello! Project group Juice=Juice might appear on NHK’s year-end Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Song Battle), sparking debate on 5ch’s Hello! Project board as well. Hello! Project hasn’t appeared on Kohaku since the 2007 “Hello! Project 10th Anniversary Kohaku Special Squad,” a 19-year absence. Thread posters clashed over whether Juice=Juice’s streaming numbers and Billboard Japan Hot 100 performance fall short compared to groups that have already appeared on Kohaku — CUTIE STREET, FRUITS ZIPPER, and =LOVE — versus those defending the group based on their songs and music-show track record.

Sure, Juju's "Morezuri" clip (a flattering-photo/selfie trend) is going viral, but their streaming still falls way short of last year's Kawa-Lab and this year's =LOVE (and even CUTIE STREET, who's in that same ballpark, still didn't make Kohaku). In terms of turnout, they obviously can't touch Nogizaka, let alone =LOVE or FRUITS ZIPPER. Putting them in the same league as those two groups is way too much blind favoritism.

You say "if they can't get in with this, no one can," but their Billboard Japan Hot 100 performance isn't even in that conversation, and their streaming numbers aren't growing either. They do get booked on music shows for their talent and good songs, but back in 2025 CUTIE STREET put up numbers on par with the #1 spot and still didn't make Kohaku — so it's really not "if they can't get in with this, no one can."

Background and Key Points of This Debate

NHK’s Kohaku Uta Gassen airs on New Year’s Eve, and an appearance is considered to carry special significance for any artist. Hello! Project’s last Kohaku appearance was the “10th Anniversary Kohaku Special Squad” in 2007, meaning the group has been absent for 19 years since. The thread’s core divide is between those who argue, based on Juice=Juice’s streaming numbers and Billboard Japan Hot 100 performance, that the group hasn’t yet met the bar, and those who expect an appearance based on the strength of their songs and their track record on music shows. One post claims their spot was “already locked in back in August,” but it’s worth noting this is presented in the unverified-insider-info style typical of 5ch and is not an official announcement. CUTIE STREET and FRUITS ZIPPER also come up as points of comparison — both are themselves relatively newly formed groups, suggesting that the question of who gets to appear on Kohaku is a live debate across the idol industry right now.

  • Taiga Drama “Masterpiece vs. Dud” Debate Rages On: 5ch Users Say “Kiyomori’s Mysterious Low Reputation Makes No Sense”

A thread sorting NHK’s year-long historical “taiga dramas” into “masterpieces” and “duds” went up on 5ch’s Livegalileo (news/variety) board. The original poster (OP — called “itchi” in 5ch slang) filed Shinsengumi!, Atsuhime, Sanada Maru, Reach Beyond the Blue Sky, and The 13 Lords of the Shogun under masterpieces, and Tenchijin, Go, Hana Moyu, and How Do You Like Ieyasu? under duds — but replies pushed back on that sorting almost immediately. Most notably, several posters rated Taira no Kiyomori — which posted the lowest ratings in the show’s 60-plus-year history when it aired — as a “total masterpiece” and even “the best taiga ever.” Meanwhile, opinion on How Do You Like Ieyasu? was split on the lead performance, but many praised the supporting cast, and quite a few pushed back on writing the whole show off as a dud.

    Glad OP actually gets it.
Honestly I wanted someone to point out that Kiyomori aired after Go, so of course you'd have watched it — but eh, close enough.
Seriously, Kiyomori's mysterious low reputation makes no sense.

    Background and Talking Points

NHK’s taiga dramas have a history spanning more than 60 years, and it’s a recurring topic that ratings and critical reputation don’t always line up. “Taira no Kiyomori” (2012), repeatedly mentioned in the thread, posted the lowest average ratings in the franchise’s history at the time and was long held up as the poster child for a flop — but in recent years, online opinion has increasingly praised its hard-edged character writing and visual craftsmanship. “Idaten” (2019), likewise known for low ratings, also came up in the thread. “Sweets taiga” (スイーツ大河) is 5ch slang for dramas that foreground romance and interpersonal melodrama, usually used with a slightly critical edge. In this thread too, opinions split depending on whether posters liked or disliked that tendency, though there was broad agreement that ratings numbers alone don’t measure a show’s quality. That said, it’s worth remembering these are individual posters’ personal opinions, not results from any official popularity poll.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Livegalileo/”nandemo jikkyo” board) thread “Masterpiece taiga dramas: ‘Shinsengumi, Atsuhime, Sanada Maru, Reach Beyond the Blue Sky, Kamakura-dono’ — Dud taiga dramas: ‘Tenchijin, Go, Hana Moyu, How Do You Like Ieyasu?’.”

  • Morning Musume’s Yuko Nakazawa (53) Belts Out ‘Moré! Mi Amore’ — Fans Say ‘The Intensity Is Unreal’

A video of Morning Musume’s original leader Yuko Nakazawa (53) performing “Moré! Mi Amore” was posted on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, sparking a wave of reactions. The clip came from the Chinese video platform Bilibili, and plenty of replies focused on viewing conditions. The thread buzzed with talk of Nakazawa reportedly singing and dancing non-stop for 90 minutes at her solo live this year, and with the sheer intensity she’s bringing ahead of Morning Musume’s 30th anniversary next year, drawing comments like “the intensity is insane” and “that’s pure Showa-era passion exploding.” At the same time, much of the discussion centered on the fact that the video had come by way of Bilibili, and on whether it would even play depending on one’s phone model or browser.

If I’d been there in the venue, the power of it would’ve been so intense

I think I’d have taken a step back

    51AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:48
Can't even watch it in the browser version on an iPhone 7 anymore. Works fine on Android though
    54AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:56
    Re: #51
Ah, I see — so it worked for me because I'm on Android

    Re: #51
On iPhone SE3 it played once I switched to desktop browser mode
    52AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:52
I just used the Hello! Project mega subscription-unlock playlist as the setlist for a bar event as-is, but "Moré-mi" and "Tekka Happy" are the only ones that feel out of place
    53AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:55
Wait, she did "Tekka Happy" too?? (lol) Someone upload it please
    56AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:08
Watching this, I guess it's a song you can still pull off even after becoming a BBA (slang for "old lady")
    58AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:10
Didn't know she had this kind of mood-kayo (retro mood-ballad) style singing in her — though I don't actually know what "mood kayo" even is
    60AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:14
Would've loved to hear this live at the venue. Bar-event streams and DVDs often have such a weird balance between vocals and instrumentals, and they lose that raw live feel — sometimes it ends up sounding like a thousand times worse than being there in person
    61AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:20
Your eyes are a filter — Yuko!!
    62AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:22
Sis, did she actually do the "shutter chance" pose?
    65AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:28
    Re: #62
Check out Re: #1 starting around the 1:05 mark
    63AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:23
Sounds like she went through a seriously bad breakup (that line really lands)
    64AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:27
As expected of Yu-Yu-tan! Incredible power!
The "shutter chance" pose and the "bad aftertaste" line really suit her!

Guess the kick move is asking a bit much at this point though
    69AnonymousSep 20, 2026 20:32
Wow, now that's something else — glad I got to see this! That's our Nakazawa-neesan for you

    Background and Key Points

Yuko Nakazawa has been active as Morning Musume’s original leader since the group’s formation in 1997, and is now 53. The group is set to mark its 30th anniversary in 2027, and the thread carried a sense of anticipation about the “finishing touches” she seems to be putting in ahead of next year. The clip in question was posted to the Chinese video platform Bilibili, and a large share of the replies focused less on reactions to the performance itself and more on whether it could even be viewed depending on one’s phone model or browser. Posters also noted that Bilibili’s app has recently added official Japanese-language support, hinting that Chinese platforms are increasingly becoming an established route for Hello! Project fans to spread information. A few comments pushing back against comparisons to other groups also surfaced, suggesting an undercurrent of generational rivalry between groups.

  • Tigers’ Maekawa Hit by Pitch: Was It Actually Inside the Strike Zone? 5ch Erupts Over the Call

On September 20, 2026, a hit-by-pitch on Hanshin Tigers player Maekawa during a game became a hot topic on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” board. The issue isn’t the hit-by-pitch itself, but whether the pitch was actually inside the strike zone — after watching replay images, posters split right down the middle, with some insisting “that’s clearly a ball” and others firing back “no, that’s a strike.” No one posted video, only still images circulated, and the results of the official replay review also became a talking point, with the back-and-forth over what really happened dominating the thread.

    3AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:27
That review request took way too long, didn't it
    5AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:29
The usual clownish umpiring strikes again ("chinpire" — slang mocking incompetent umps)
    7AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:30
This is way too much, honestly
    They're just ignoring the rules
    10AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:31
Not getting ejected for protesting the review result — that's the real rule-breaking
    11AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:31
Even if he throws inside within the strike zone, they'll act like he's intimidating the batter, right?
    Total garbage
    15AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:31
The clown umps actually allowed this lolololol
    22AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:33
    Re: #15
Yeah this is genuinely messed up
    16AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:32
But isn't it the pitcher's fault for not having the skill to command the inside corner?
    24AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:34
    Re: #16
It landed exactly where he aimed, inside the strike zone though
    17AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:32
    A hit-by-pitch inside the strike zone —
    that's gotta be a first
    20AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:33
    Re: #17
Pretty sure that happens fairly often though
    23AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:34
If this is allowed, pitchers might start faking a bunt and aiming for the head next
    30AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:35
Maybe all those past 'intimidation' pitches were actually strikes too
    37AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:42
Watched the replay — that's clearly a ball, no matter how you look at it
    39AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:43
A Tigers fan's "clearly" can't be trusted lol
    40AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:43
Go watch the footage — it's a ball
If that's actually a strike, I'd honestly be impressed
    41AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:44
This is the only way to stop Yokohama's momentum!
    43AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:45
If that's really a strike, that's crazy in its own way
    44AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:45
"I personally wasn't upset about it" — that kind of mindset
    48AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:46
No wonder nobody can post the video

    Because

    it's completely a ball
    53AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:48
    Re: #48
Then the "it's a ball" crowd should be the ones posting it
    50AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:47
Wasn't there a pitcher named Maekawa who transferred from Orix to the Tigers, the one who got a DUI?
Wonder what he's up to now
    52AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:48
Still no video this whole time
    Says it all
    Guess it's another anti-Tigers thread starter 🤭
    54AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:49
Normally if you're starting a thread like this, you'd post the video, right? 🤭
    55AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:49
If they post the video it'll be obvious

that it was completely a ball lol
    56AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:49
In front of the clown umps, the replay review means nothing
    60AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:50
If the review overturned the call, doesn't that mean it was a ball?
    64AnonymousSep 20, 2026 19:52
Hit by pitch inside the strike zone lolololololol

Never seen a sight like this before lol
A hit-by-pitch inside the strike zone

    Re: #89
That's straight up right over the plate lol

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Under NPB rules, if a pitch passes through the strike zone and the batter makes no attempt to avoid it, it can be ruled a “strike” rather than a “hit-by-pitch” even if it hits the batter’s body. This is exactly the kind of situation at the center of this debate — after watching the replays and images, posters were split, with some saying “that’s obviously a ball” and others insisting “no, it’s inside the strike zone,” and the argument continued without a clear resolution. The thread also featured emotional jabs at the pitcher and some off-color banter, but the core dispute is really a technical one about interpreting the replay footage. The article doesn’t confirm what standard the home plate umpire actually used or how the team’s challenge was handled, so it’s worth noting this remains speculation confined to 5ch.
