The story
A topic buzzed on 5ch’s Livegalileo (general live-commentary) board after reports surfaced that the studio behind the Persona series believes it should remaster or remake the original ‘Persona’ and ‘Persona 2.’ Both games are praised for their scenarios, but their dungeon difficulty and random-encounter systems are frequently blasted as “bad game design,” and posters also pointed out that swapping in new music for the PSP remaster became a real obstacle to further ports. The thread mixed genuine affection for these classics with harsh judgment of their gameplay systems.
What people said
In 1, both the Sebek route and the Snow Queen route have happy and bad endings.
2 ends on a bittersweet note that leaves you conflicted.
The scenario's great, but as a game… honestly, eh.
No way around it, 1 is a bad game lol
If they hadn't done that baffling thing where they replaced the entire soundtrack with new music in the PSP version of 1, it might've ended up on Steam like P3P.
All three PSP versions were directed by Shoji Meguro, who has since left the company.
Merging 1 and 2 feels like a tall order honestly — plenty of people loved 1 but couldn't stand 2.
If you scrap the calendar, you'd have to scrap the Social Links too, and at that point it's not really a post-3 Persona game anymore — is that really what people want?
Even in the Reiwa era, Nanjo's just too cool for that to matter.
That's what Megami Tensei is for.
Metaphor's very early hours were great, but pretty early on you started going "wait, is this really it?" By the end it just felt like Persona with the IP swapped out.
Save-anywhere, but a wipeout sends you back to before the battle with the enemy getting first strike guaranteed. I bet they'll soften that a ton.
Just when I thought I'd finally get to hear the Persona-awakening and mid-boss themes on proper audio…
But without Mark you can't give Goh-Tenno its Latent ability revival — that'd be a real problem. And in negotiations, Mark's the second-most useful after Nanjo.
These days, getting wiped out by an enemy's first strike with no way to react is a guaranteed "bad game" complaint.
Symbol encounters would be one thing, but with random encounters it's rough. Even V ended up going with symbol encounters in the end.
The series goes all the way back to the Famicom era, so once you count every spinoff there's a mountain of them.
Yeah, 4 on top, then 5, then 3. Without nostalgia goggles, 1 and 2 are pretty middling.
I got into the series with 3, so 3 has the strongest nostalgia pull for me — the ending after that final-boss sequence is 3 by a mile.
You mean Majin Tensei… no wait, Maken Shao?
Wasn't it something like, after Nemesis (Judgement), he was satisfied and just left the rest to Igor?
Give it up. He's dead already.
Background and Key Points of This Topic
The ‘Persona’ series has been a beloved RPG franchise since the original launched in 1996, and from the third entry onward it settled into its now-signature format combining a calendar-based school-life sim with dungeon exploration. The earlier games, 1 and 2, still carry the hallmarks of old-school RPG design — first-person dungeon crawling, random encounters — and despite being praised for their scenarios, they’ve long been flagged as difficult to actually play. A PSP port was released in the past, but replacing the soundtrack with new music proved controversial and kept it from getting a Steam release the way the later P3P did. Shoji Meguro, who directed those PSP versions, has since left Atlus. The thread shows both anticipation for a possible remaster and real concern over whether old-school elements like random encounters and full restarts after a party wipe would fly with modern gamers — making this less a simple wave of nostalgia and more a grounded debate about feasibility.
